1. WinoPron: Revisiting English Winogender Schemas for Consistency, Coverage, and Grammatical Case

Abstract

While measuring bias and robustness in coreference resolution are important goals, such measurements are only as good as the tools we use to measure them with. Winogender schemas (Rudinger et al., 2018) are an influential dataset proposed to evaluate gender bias in coreference resolution, but a closer look reveals issues with the data that compromise its use for reliable evaluation, including treating different pronominal forms as equivalent, violations of template constraints, and typographical errors. We identify these issues and fix them, contributing a new dataset: WinoPron. Our changes affect performance with state-of-the-art supervised coreference resolution systems as well as all model sizes of the language model FLAN-T5, with F1 dropping on average 10 percentage points. We also propose a new method to evaluate pronominal bias in coreference resolution that goes beyond the binary. With this method and our new dataset which is balanced for grammatical case, we empirically demonstrate that bias characteristics vary not just across pronoun sets, but also across surface forms of those sets.

Abstract

Our open-source Python package BoFire combines Bayesian Optimization (BO) with other design of experiments (DoE) strategies focusing on developing and optimizing new chemistry. Previous BO implementations, for example as they exist in the literature or software, require substantial adaptation for effective real-world deployment in chemical industry. BoFire provides a rich feature-set with extensive configurability and realizes our vision of fast-tracking research contributions into industrial use via maintainable open-source software. Owing to quality-of-life features like JSON-serializability of problem formulations, BoFire enables seamless integration of BO into RESTful APIs, a common architecture component for both self-driving laboratories and human-in-the-loop setups. Abstract

Ge1-xSnx and Si1-x-yGeySnx alloys are promising materials for future opto- and nanoelectronics applications. These alloys enable effective band-gap engineering, broad adjustability of their lattice parameter, exhibit much higher carrier mobility than pure Si, and are compatible with the CMOS technology. Unfortunately, the equilibrium solid solubility of Sn in Si1-xGex is less than 1% and the pseudomorphic growth of Si1-x-yGeySnx on Ge or Si can cause in-plane compressive strain in the grown layer, degrading the superior properties of these alloys. Therefore, post-growth strain engineering by ultrafast non-equilibrium thermal treatments like pulse laser annealing (PLA) is needed to improve the layer quality. In this article, Ge0.94Sn0.06 and Si0.14Ge0.8Sn0.06 thin films grown on silicon-on-insulator substrates by molecular beam epitaxy were post growth thermally treated by PLA. The material is analyzed before and after the thermal treatments by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and Hall effect measurements. It is shown that after annealing, the material is single-crystalline with improved crystallinity than the as-grown layer. This is reflected in a significantly increased XRD reflection intensity, well-ordered atomic pillars, and increased active carrier concentrations up to 4x1019 cm-3.

Abstract

For many years, Si1-yGey alloys have been applied in the semiconductor industry due to the ability to adjust the performance of Si-based nanoelectronic devices. Following this alloying approach of group-IV semiconductors, adding tin (Sn) into the alloy appears as the obvious next step, which leads to additional possibilities for tailoring the material properties. Adding Sn enables effective band gap and strain engineering and can improve the carrier mobilities, which makes Si1-x-yGeySnx alloys promising candidates for future opto- and nanoelectronics applications. The bottom-up approach for epitaxial growth of Si1-x-yGeySnx, e.g., by chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy, allows tuning the material properties in the growth direction only; the realization of local material modifications to generate lateral heterostructures with such a bottom-up approach is extremely elaborate, since it would require the use of lithography, etching, and either selective epitaxy or epitaxy and chemical-mechanical polishing giving rise to interface issues, non-planar substrates, etc. This article shows the possibility of fabricating Si1-x-yGeySnx alloys by Sn ion beam implantation into Si1-yGey layers followed by millisecond-range flash lamp annealing (FLA). The materials are investigated by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, micro Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The fabrication approach was adapted to ultra-thin Si1-yGey layers on silicon-on-insulator substrates. The results show the fabrication of single-crystalline Si1-x-yGeySnx with up to 2.3 at.% incorporated Sn without any indication of Sn segregation after recrystallization via FLA. Finally, we exhibit the possibility of implanting Sn locally in ultra-thin Si1-yGey films by masking unstructured regions on the chip.

6. Cheating Automatic Short Answer Grading with the Adversarial Usage of Adjectives and Adverbs

Abstract

Automatic grading models are valued for the time and effort saved during the instruction of large student bodies. Especially with the increasing digitization of education and interest in large-scale standardized testing, the popularity of automatic grading has risen to the point where commercial solutions are widely available and used. However, for short answer formats, automatic grading is challenging due to natural language ambiguity and versatility. While automatic short answer grading models are beginning to compare to human performance on some datasets, their robustness, especially to adversarially manipulated data, is questionable. Exploitable vulnerabilities in grading models can have far-reaching consequences ranging from cheating students receiving undeserved credit to undermining automatic grading altogether--even when most predictions are valid. In this paper, we devise a black-box adversarial attack tailored to the educational short answer grading scenario to investigate the grading models' robustness. In our attack, we insert adjectives and adverbs into natural places of incorrect student answers, fooling the model into predicting them as correct. We observed a loss of prediction accuracy between 10 and 22 percentage points using the state-of-the-art models BERT and T5. While our attack made answers appear less natural to humans in our experiments, it did not significantly increase the graders' suspicions of cheating. Based on our experiments, we provide recommendations for utilizing automatic grading systems more safely in practice.

7. Enhancing Multi-Domain Automatic Short Answer Grading through an Explainable Neuro-Symbolic Pipeline

Abstract

Grading short answer questions automatically with interpretable reasoning behind the grading decision is a challenging goal for current transformer approaches. Justification cue detection, in combination with logical reasoners, has shown a promising direction for neuro-symbolic architectures in ASAG. But, one of the main challenges is the requirement of annotated justification cues in the students' responses, which only exist for a few ASAG datasets. To overcome this challenge, we contribute (1) a weakly supervised annotation procedure for justification cues in ASAG datasets, and (2) a neuro-symbolic model for explainable ASAG based on justification cues. Our approach improves upon the RMSE by 0.24 to 0.3 compared to the state-of-the-art on the Short Answer Feedback dataset in a bilingual, multi-domain, and multi-question training setup. This result shows that our approach provides a promising direction for generating high-quality grades and accompanying explanations for future research in ASAG and educational NLP.

Abstract

METIS, the Mid-Infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, is one of the four first-generation ELT instruments scheduled to see first light in 2028. Its two main science modules are supported by an adaptive optics system featuring a pyramid sensor with 90x90 subapertures working in the H and K bands. During the PDR and FDR phases, extensive simulations were carried out to support the sensing, reconstruction, and control concept of METIS single-conjugate adaptive optics (SCAO) system. 9. Large GPT-like Models are Bad Babies: A Closer Look at the Relationship between Linguistic Competence and Psycholinguistic Measures

Abstract

Research on the cognitive plausibility of language models (LMs) has so far mostly concentrated on modelling psycholinguistic response variables such as reading times, gaze durations and N400/P600 EEG signals, while mostly leaving out the dimension of what Mahowald et al. (2023) described as formal and functional linguistic competence, and developmental plausibility. We address this gap by training a series of GPT-like language models of different sizes on the strict version of the BabyLM pretraining corpus, evaluating on the challenge tasks (BLiMP, GLUE, MSGS) and an additional reading time prediction task. We find a positive correlation between LM size and performance on all three challenge tasks, with different preferences for model width and depth in each of the tasks. In contrast, a negative correlation was found between LM size and reading time fit of linear mixed-effects models using LM surprisal as a predictor, with the second-smallest LM achieving the largest log-likelihood reduction over a baseline model without surprisal. This suggests that modelling processing effort and linguistic competence may require an approach different from training GPT-like LMs on a developmentally plausible corpus.

14. Information-Theoretic Characterization of Vowel Harmony: A Cross-Linguistic Study on Word Lists

Abstract

We present a cross-linguistic study that aims to quantify vowel harmony using data-driven computational modeling. Concretely, we define an information-theoretic measure of harmonicity based on the predictability of vowels in a natural language lexicon, which we estimate using phoneme-level language models (PLMs). Prior quantitative studies have relied heavily on inflected word-forms in the analysis of vowel harmony. We instead train our models using cross-linguistically comparable lemma forms with little or no inflection, which enables us to cover more under-studied languages. Training data for our PLMs consists of word lists with a maximum of 1000 entries per language. Despite the fact that the data we employ are substantially smaller than previously used corpora, our experiments demonstrate the neural PLMs capture vowel harmony patterns in a set of languages that exhibit this phenomenon. Abstract

Abstract The mismanagement of waste is jeopardizing urban sustainability. Although polycentric waste governance (PWG) has been introduced, characterizing the PWG remains challenging. This paper employs game theory to illustrate polycentricity by investigating the equilibrium state from the stakeholders’ perspective. Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong are selected as target cities for comparative analysis. The findings reveal the heterogeneous characteristics in three megacities’ PWG—the collaboration by principal stakeholders (formal recyclers, informal recyclers, households) in Shanghai, the exclusion of informal recyclers in Tokyo, and the limited contribution provided by the formal recyclers in Hong Kong. The divergent PWG characteristics can be attributed to variations in governance patterns, socioeconomic factors, and policy formulation. Regarding urban sustainability, Tokyo and Shanghai’s PWG contribute to the circular economy’s expansion, while Hong Kong’ potential, in this regard, is undervalued. Despite Tokyo’s improved social recognition to practitioners, this PWG mode, primarily driven by formal recyclers and households, presents limited inclusion of low-income groups. Additionally, it is crucial for the authorities in Shanghai and Hong Kong to acknowledge the potential pollution of informal recyclers’ non-environmental behavior. This paper offers a valuable model for characterizing and analyzing PWG across different cities, facilitating knowledge aggregation and the implementation of PWG practice.

Abstract

Constricted blood vessels in the circulatory system can severely impact the spatiotemporal organization of red blood cells (RBCs) causing various physiological complications. In lab-on-a-chip applications, constrictions are commonly used for cell sorting and plasma separation based on the formation of a cell-free layer (CFL) at the channel boundary. However, such devices usually employ a steady flow, although time-dependent and pulsatile flow conditions enhance many microfluidic operations and possess significant relevance for in-vitro studies under physiologically relevant flow conditions. In this study, we examine the CFL dynamics in a constricted microchannel under steady and time-dependent flow. Therefore, we develop an image processing routine that allows us to resolve the spatiotemporal evolution of the CFL under time-dependent driving of the flow with arbitrary waveform. First, we perform a characterization of the CFL and the cell-free area (CFA) before and after the constriction under steady flow conditions. Second, we employ our method to study the effect of the hematocrit and the parameters of the flow modulations on the CFL and CFA using a sinusoidal pressure profile. Our results highlight the dominant effects of the RBC concentration and the amplitude of the applied pressure signal predominantly on the CFA dynamics. Moreover, we observe a dampening of the CFA amplitude with increasing hematocrit or decreasing pressure amplitude, and a peculiar phase shift of the CFA oscillations pre- and post-constriction. Complementary numerical simulations reveal how the time-dependent CFA dynamics are coupled with the dynamically changing flow field at the constriction. Due to the increasing demand for investigations and applications under time-dependent flow conditions, our study provides crucial insight into the flow behavior of complex fluids in unsteady microscale flows.

25. Aluminium substituted yttrium iron garnet thin films with reduced Curie temperature

Abstract

Magnetic garnets such as yttrium iron garnet (Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, YIG) are widely used in spintronic and magnonic devices. Their magnetic and magneto-optical properties can be modified over a wide range by tailoring their chemical composition. Here, we report the successful growth of Al-substituted yttrium iron garnet (YAlIG) thin films via radio frequency sputtering in combination with an ex situ annealing step. Upon selecting appropriate process parameters, we obtain highly crystalline YAlIG films with different Al$^{3+}$ substitution levels on both, single crystalline Y$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ (YAG) and Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ (GGG) substrates. With increasing Al$^{3+}$ substitution levels, we observe a reduction of the saturation magnetisation as well as a systematic decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature to values well below room temperature. YAlIG thin films thus provide an interesting material platform for spintronic and magnonic experiments in different magnetic phases.

Abstract

PurposeEganelisib (IPI-549) is a first-in-class, orally administered, highly selective PI3Kγ inhibitor with antitumor activity alone and in combination with programmed cell death protein 1/ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) inhibitors in preclinical studies. This phase 1/1b first-in-human, MAcrophage Reprogramming in Immuno-Oncology-1 (NCT02637531) study evaluated the safety and tolerability of once-daily eganelisib as monotherapy and in combination with nivolumab in patients with solid tumors.Patients and methodsDose-escalation cohorts received eganelisib 10-60 mg as monotherapy (n = 39) and 20-40 mg when combined with nivolumab (n = 180). Primary endpoints included incidence of dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) and adverse events (AE).ResultsThe most common treatment-related grade ≥3 toxicities with monotherapy were increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 18%), aspartate aminotransferase (AST; 18%), and alkaline phosphatase (5%). No DLTs occurred in the first 28 days; however, toxicities meeting DLT criteria (mostly grade 3 reversible hepatic enzyme elevations) occurred with eganelisib 60 mg in later treatment cycles. In combination, the most common treatment-related grade ≥3 toxicities were increased AST (13%) and increased ALT and rash (10%). Treatment-related serious AEs occurred in 5% of monotherapy patients (grade 4 bilirubin and hepatic enzyme increases in one patient each) and 13% in combination (pyrexia, rash, cytokine release syndrome, and infusion-related reaction in ≥2 patients each). Antitumor activity was observed in combination, including patients who had progressed on PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors.ConclusionsOn the basis of the observed safety profile, eganelisib doses of 30 and 40 mg once daily in combination with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors were chosen for phase 2 study.

Abstract

We report three searches for high energy neutrino emission from astrophysical objects using data recorded with IceCube between 2011 and 2020. Improvements over previous work include new neutrino reconstruction and data calibration methods. In one search, the positions of 110 a priori selected gamma-ray sources were analyzed individually for a possible surplus of neutrinos over atmospheric and cosmic background expectations. We found an excess of $79_{-20}^{+22}$ neutrinos associated with the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 at a significance of 4.2$\,\sigma$. The excess, which is spatially consistent with the direction of the strongest clustering of neutrinos in the Northern Sky, is interpreted as direct evidence of TeV neutrino emission from a nearby active galaxy. The metabolism of phototrophic cyanobacteria is an integral part of global biogeochemical cycles, and the capability of cyanobacteria to assimilate atmospheric CO2 into organic carbon has manifold potential applications for a sustainable biotechnology. To elucidate the properties of cyanobacterial metabolism and growth, computational reconstructions of genome-scale metabolic networks play an increasingly important role. Here, we present an updated reconstruction of the metabolic network of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 and its quantitative evaluation using flux balance analysis (FBA). To overcome limitations of conventional FBA, and to allow for the integration of experimental analyses, we develop a novel approach to describe light absorption and light utilization within the framework of FBA. Our approach incorporates photoinhibition and a variable quantum yield into the constraint-based description of light-limited phototrophic growth. We show that the resulting model is capable of predicting quantitative properties of cyanobacterial growth, including photosynthetic oxygen evolution and the ATP/NADPH ratio required for growth and cellular maintenance. Our approach retains the computational and conceptual simplicity of FBA and is readily applicable to other phototrophic microorganisms.

Abstract Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric complication of liver disease which is partly associated with elevated ammonemia. Urea hydrolysis by urease-producing bacteria in the colon is often mentioned as one of the main routes of ammonia production in the body, yet research on treatments targeting bacterial ureases in hepatic encephalopathy is limited. Herein we report a hydroxamate-based urease inhibitor, 2-octynohydroxamic acid, exhibiting improved in vitro potency compared to hydroxamic acids that were previously investigated for hepatic encephalopathy. 2-octynohydroxamic acid shows low cytotoxic and mutagenic potential within a micromolar concentration range as well as reduces ammonemia in rodent models of liver disease. Furthermore, 2-octynohydroxamic acid treatment decreases cerebellar glutamine, a product of ammonia metabolism, in male bile duct ligated rats. A prototype colonic formulation enables reduced systemic exposure to 2-octynohydroxamic acid in male dogs. Overall, this work suggests that urease inhibitors delivered to the colon by means of colonic formulations represent a prospective approach for the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.

Abstract Endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers a non-invasive approach to perform the morphological and functional assessment of the middle ear in vivo. However, interpreting such OCT images is challenging and time-consuming due to the shadowing of preceding structures. Deep neural networks have emerged as a promising tool to enhance this process in multiple aspects, including segmentation, classification, and registration. Nevertheless, the scarcity of annotated datasets of OCT middle ear images poses a significant hurdle to the performance of neural networks. We introduce the Dresden in vivo OCT Dataset of the Middle Ear (DIOME) featuring 43 OCT volumes from both healthy and pathological middle ears of 29 subjects. DIOME provides semantic segmentations of five crucial anatomical structures (tympanic membrane, malleus, incus, stapes and promontory), and sparse landmarks delineating the salient features of the structures. The availability of these data facilitates the training and evaluation of algorithms regarding various analysis tasks with middle ear OCT images, e.g. diagnostics.

Summary:. Demand for gender-affirming facial surgery is growing rapidly. Frontal sinus setback, one of the key procedures used in gender-affirming facial surgery, has a particularly high impact on gender perception. Mixed reality (MR) allows a user to view and virtually overlay three-dimensional imaging on the patient and interact with it in real time. We used the Medivis’s SurgicalAR system in conjunction with the Microsoft HoloLens Lucille2 (Microsoft). Computed tomography imaging was uploaded to SurgicalAR, and a three-dimensional (3D) hologram was projected onto the display of the HoloLens. The hologram was registered and matched to the patient, allowing the surgeon to view bony anatomy and underlying structures in real time on the patient. The surgeon was able to outline the patient’s frontal sinuses using the hologram as guidance. A 3D printed cutting guide was used for comparison. Negligible difference between the mixed reality-based outline and 3D-printed outline was seen. The process of loading the hologram and marking the frontal sinus outline lasted less than 10 minutes. The workflow and usage described here demonstrate significant promise for the use of mixed reality as imaging and surgical guidance technology in gender-affirming facial surgery.

Abstract

Abstract Background Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are among the most frequent infections and a significant contributor to inappropriate antibiotic prescription. Currently, no single diagnostic tool can reliably identify bacterial pneumonia. We thus evaluate a multimodal approach based on a clinical score, lung ultrasound (LUS), and the inflammatory biomarker, procalcitonin (PCT) to guide prescription of antibiotics. LUS outperforms chest X-ray in the identification of pneumonia, while PCT is known to be elevated in bacterial and/or severe infections. We propose a trial to test their synergistic potential in reducing antibiotic prescription while preserving patient safety in emergency departments (ED). Methods The PLUS-IS-LESS study is a pragmatic, stepped-wedge cluster-randomized, clinical trial conducted in 10 Swiss EDs. It assesses the PLUS algorithm, which combines a clinical prediction score, LUS, PCT, and a clinical severity score to guide antibiotics among adults with LRTIs, compared with usual care. The co-primary endpoints are the proportion of patients prescribed antibiotics and the proportion of patients with clinical failure by day 28. Secondary endpoints include measurement of change in quality of life, length of hospital stay, antibiotic-related side effects, barriers and facilitators to the implementation of the algorithm, cost-effectiveness of the intervention, and identification of patterns of pneumonia in LUS using machine learning. Discussion The PLUS algorithm aims to optimize prescription of antibiotics through improved diagnostic performance and maximization of physician adherence, while ensuring safety. It is based on previously validated tests and does therefore not expose participants to unforeseeable risks. Cluster randomization prevents cross-contamination between study groups, as physicians are not exposed to the intervention during or before the control period. The stepped-wedge implementation of the intervention allows effect calculation from both between- and within-cluster comparisons, which enhances statistical power and allows smaller sample size than a parallel cluster design. Moreover, it enables the training of all centers for the intervention, simplifying implementation if the results prove successful. The PLUS algorithm has the potential to improve the identification of LRTIs that would benefit from antibiotics. When scaled, the expected reduction in the proportion of antibiotics prescribed has the potential to not only decrease side effects and costs but also mitigate antibiotic resistance. Trial registration This study was registered on July 19, 2022, on the ClinicalTrials.gov registry using reference number: NCT05463406. 40. Cheating Automatic Short Answer Grading: On the Adversarial Usage of Adjectives and Adverbs

Abstract

Automatic grading models are valued for the time and effort saved during the instruction of large student bodies. Especially with the increasing digitization of education and interest in large-scale standardized testing, the popularity of automatic grading has risen to the point where commercial solutions are widely available and used. However, for short answer formats, automatic grading is challenging due to natural language ambiguity and versatility. While automatic short answer grading models are beginning to compare to human performance on some datasets, their robustness, especially to adversarially manipulated data, is questionable. Exploitable vulnerabilities in grading models can have far-reaching consequences ranging from cheating students receiving undeserved credit to undermining automatic grading altogether - even when most predictions are valid. In this paper, we devise a black-box adversarial attack tailored to the educational short answer grading scenario to investigate the grading models' robustness. In our attack, we insert adjectives and adverbs into natural places of incorrect student answers, fooling the model into predicting them as correct. We observed a loss of prediction accuracy between 10 and 22 percentage points using the state-of-the-art models BERT and T5. While our attack made answers appear less natural to humans in our experiments, it did not significantly increase the graders' suspicions of cheating. Based on our experiments, we provide recommendations for utilizing automatic grading systems more safely in practice.

Abstract

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. Abstract

We report the discovery of TOI-2180 b, a 2.8 $M_{\rm J}$ giant planet orbiting a slightly evolved G5 host star. This planet transited only once in Cycle 2 of the primary Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. Citizen scientists identified the 24 hr single-transit event shortly after the data were released, allowing a Doppler monitoring campaign with the Automated Planet Finder telescope at Lick Observatory to begin promptly. The radial velocity observations refined the orbital period of TOI-2180 b to be 260.8$\pm$0.6 days, revealed an orbital eccentricity of 0.368$\pm$0.007, and discovered long-term acceleration from a more distant massive companion. We conducted ground-based photometry from 14 sites spread around the globe in an attempt to detect another transit. Although we did not make a clear transit detection, the nondetections improved the precision of the orbital period. We predict that TESS will likely detect another transit of TOI-2180 b in Sector 48 of its extended mission. We use giant planet structure models to retrieve the bulk heavy-element content of TOI-2180 b. When considered alongside other giant planets with orbital periods over 100 days, we find tentative evidence that the correlation between planet mass and metal enrichment relative to stellar is dependent on orbital properties. Single-transit discoveries like TOI-2180 b highlight the exciting potential of the TESS mission to find planets with long orbital periods and low irradiation fluxes despite the selection biases associated with the transit method., Comment: Published in AJ

Abstract

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a pre-malignant plasma cell disorder with an etiology that is incompletely understood. Modifiable risk factors and genetic predispositions likely interact to increase MGUS risk in specific individuals and populations. Identifying geographic prevalence patterns and modifiable risk factors is critical for understanding the etiology of MGUS. The aim of this review was to outline original research on MGUS prevalence across geographic locations and modifiable risk factors. We conducted a systematic review of 39 eligible studies from PubMed®, Embase®, and Web of Science® written in English and published by February 2023. Our protocol was registered in accordance with PROSPERO guidelines. Studies were synthesized using Research Electronic Data Capture and appraised using the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute study quality assessment tools. The prevalence of MGUS ranged from 0.24% to 9% across geographic locations. Modifiable risk factors for MGUS include infections, autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammatory conditions, lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, and ionizing radiation. Therefore, the development of MGUS may be related to chronic antigenic stimulation and genetic aberrations that promote clonal proliferation of plasma cells. Prospective studies assessing gene–environment interactions are needed to further define risk factors for MGUS and inform screening and preventative strategies.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the high-energy astrophysical muon-neutrino flux with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The measurement uses a high-purity selection of ~650k neutrino-induced muon tracks from the Northern celestial hemisphere, corresponding to 9.5 years of experimental data. With respect to previous publications, the measurement is improved by the increased size of the event sample and the extended model testing beyond simple power-law hypotheses. An updated treatment of systematic uncertainties and atmospheric background fluxes has been implemented based on recent models. The best-fit single power-law parameterization for the astrophysical energy spectrum results in a normalization of $\phi_{\mathrm{@100TeV}}^{\nu_\mu+\bar{\nu}_\mu} = 1.44_{-0.26}^{+0.25} \times 10^{-18}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{sr}^{-1}$ and a spectral index $\gamma_{\mathrm{SPL}} = 2.37_{-0.09}^{+0.09}$, constrained in the energy range from $15\,\mathrm{TeV}$ to $5\,\mathrm{PeV}$. The model tests include a single power law with a spectral cutoff at high energies, a log-parabola model, several source-class specific flux predictions from the literature and a model-independent spectral unfolding. The data is well consistent with a single power law hypothesis, however, spectra with softening above one PeV are statistically more favorable at a two sigma level., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The sources of the majority of the high-energy astrophysical neutrinos observed with the IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole are unknown. So far, only a gamma-ray blazar was compellingly associated with the emission of high-energy neutrinos. In addition, several studies suggest that the neutrino emission from the gamma-ray blazar population only accounts for a small fraction of the total astrophysical neutrino flux. In this work we probe the production of high-energy neutrinos in the cores of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), induced by accelerated cosmic rays in the accretion disk region. We present a likelihood analysis based on eight years of IceCube data, searching for a cumulative neutrino signal from three AGN samples created for this work. The neutrino emission is assumed to be proportional to the accretion disk luminosity estimated from the soft X-ray flux. Next to the observed soft X-ray flux, the objects for the three samples have been selected based on their radio emission and infrared color properties. For the largest sample in this search, an excess of high-energy neutrino events with respect to an isotropic background of atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos is found, corresponding to a post-trial significance of 2.60$\sigma$. Assuming a power-law spectrum, the best-fit spectral index is $2.03^{+0.14}_{-0.11}$, consistent with expectations from particle acceleration in astrophysical sources. If interpreted as a genuine signal with the assumptions of a proportionality of X-ray and neutrino fluxes and a model for the sub-threshold flux distribution, this observation implies that at 100 TeV, 27$\%$ - 100$\%$ of the observed neutrinos arise from particle acceleration in the core of AGN., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The Sun provides an excellent target for studying spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering due to its high matter density and abundant hydrogen content. Dark matter particles from the Galactic halo can elastically interact with Solar nuclei, resulting in their capture and thermalization in the Sun. The captured dark matter can annihilate into Standard Model particles including an observable flux of neutrinos. We present the results of a search for low-energy ($<$ 500 GeV) neutrinos correlated with the direction of the Sun using 7 years of IceCube data. This work utilizes, for the first time, new optimized cuts to extend IceCube's sensitivity to dark matter mass down to 5 GeV. We find no significant detection of neutrinos from the Sun. Our observations exclude capture by spin-dependent dark matter-proton scattering with cross-section down to a few times $10^{-41}$ cm$^2$, assuming there is equilibrium with annihilation into neutrinos/anti-neutrinos for dark matter masses between 5 GeV and 100 GeV. Abstract

Along their long propagation from production to detection, neutrino states undergo quantum interference which converts their types, or flavours. High-energy astrophysical neutrinos, first observed by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, are known to propagate unperturbed over a billion light years in vacuum. These neutrinos act as the largest quantum interferometer and are sensitive to the smallest effects in vacuum due to new physics. Quantum gravity (QG) aims to describe gravity in a quantum mechanical framework, unifying matter, forces and space-time. QG effects are expected to appear at the ultra-high-energy scale known as the Planck energy, $E_{P}\equiv 1.22\times 10^{19}$~giga-electronvolts (GeV). Such a high-energy universe would have existed only right after the Big Bang and it is inaccessible by human technologies. On the other hand, it is speculated that the effects of QG may exist in our low-energy vacuum, but are suppressed by the Planck energy as $E_{P}^{-1}$ ($\sim 10^{-19}$~GeV$^{-1}$), $E_{P}^{-2}$ ($\sim 10^{-38}$~GeV$^{-2}$), or its higher powers. The coupling of particles to these effects is too small to measure in kinematic observables, but the phase shift of neutrino waves could cause observable flavour conversions. Here, we report the first result of neutrino interferometry~\cite{Aartsen:2017ibm} using astrophysical neutrino flavours to search for new space-time structure. We did not find any evidence of anomalous flavour conversion in IceCube astrophysical neutrino flavour data. We place the most stringent limits of any known technologies, down to $10^{-42}$~GeV$^{-2}$, on the dimension-six operators that parameterize the space-time defects for preferred astrophysical production scenarios.
