LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $1.4 \times 10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c$^{2}$ and a 1000 d exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented., Comment: 45 pages (79 inc. tables), 7 figures, 9 tables

We describe the design and assembly of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, a direct detection search for cosmic WIMP dark matter particles. The centerpiece of the experiment is a large liquid xenon time projection chamber sensitive to low energy nuclear recoils. Rejection of backgrounds is enhanced by a Xe skin veto detector and by a liquid scintillator Outer Detector loaded with gadolinium for efficient neutron capture and tagging. LZ is located in the Davis Cavern at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. We describe the major subsystems of the experiment and its key design features and requirements.

Ring resonators provide a means of filtering specific wavelengths from a waveguide, and optionally dropping the filtered wavelengths into a second waveguide. Both of these features are potentially useful for astronomical instruments. In this paper we focus on their use as notch filters to remove the signal from atmospheric OH emission lines from astronomical spectra, however we also briefly discuss their use as frequency combs for wavelength calibration and as drop filters for Doppler planet searches. We derive the design requirements for ring resonators for OH suppression from theory and finite difference time domain simulations. We find that rings with small radii (<10 microns) are required to provide an adequate free spectral range, leading to high index contrast materials such as Si and Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$. Critically coupled rings with high self-coupling coefficients should provide the necessary Q factors, suppression depth, and throughput for efficient OH suppression. We report on our progress in fabricating both Si and Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ rings for OH suppression, and give results from preliminary laboratory tests. Our early devices show good control over the free spectral range and wavelength separation of multi-ring devices. The self-coupling coefficients are high (>0.9), but further optimisation is required to achieve higher Q and deeper notches, with current devices having $Q \approx 4000$ and $\approx 10$ dB suppression. We report the experimental realization of an optical trap that localizes single Cs atoms ~215 nm from surface of a dielectric nanofiber. By operating at magic wavelengths for pairs of counter-propagating red- and blue-detuned trapping beams, differential scalar light shifts are eliminated, and vector shifts are suppressed by ~250. We thereby measure an absorption linewidth \Gamma/2\pi = 5.7 \pm 0.1 MHz for the Cs 6S1/2,F=4 - 6P3/2,F'=5 transition, where \Gamma/2\pi = 5.2 MHz in free space. Optical depth d~66 is observed, corresponding to an optical depth per atom d_1~0.08. Laser trapping and interfacing of laser-cooled atoms in an optical fiber network is an important capability for quantum information science. Following the pioneering work of Balykin et al. and Vetsch et al., we propose a robust method of trapping single Cesium atoms with a two-color state-insensitive evanescent wave around a dielectric nanofiber. Specifically, we show that vector light shifts (i.e., effective inhomogeneous Zeeman broadening of the ground states) induced by the inherent ellipticity of the forward-propagating evanescent wave can be effectively canceled by a backward-propagating evanescent wave. Furthermore, by operating the trapping lasers at the magic wavelengths, we remove the differential scalar light shift between ground and excited states, thereby allowing for resonant driving of the optical D2 transition. This scheme provides a promising approach to trap and probe neutral atoms with long trap and coherence lifetimes with realistic experimental parameters., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

We present a semiclassical model of an atom moving in the evanescent field of a microtoroidal resonator. Atoms falling through whispering-gallery modes can achieve strong, coherent coupling with the cavity at distances of approximately 100 nanometers from the surface; in this regime, surface-induced Casmir-Polder level shifts become significant for atomic motion and detection. Modern research in optical physics has achieved quantum control of strong interactions between a single atom and one photon within the setting of cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED). However, to move beyond current proof-of-principle experiments involving one or two conventional optical cavities to more complex scalable systems that employ N >> 1 microscopic resonators requires the localization of individual atoms on distance scales < 100 nm from a resonator's surface. In this regime an atom can be strongly coupled to a single intracavity photon while at the same time experiencing significant radiative interactions with the dielectric boundaries of the resonator. Here, we report an initial step into this new regime of cQED by way of real-time detection and high-bandwidth feedback to select and monitor single Cesium atoms localized ~100 nm from the surface of a micro-toroidal optical resonator. We employ strong radiative interactions of atom and cavity field to probe atomic motion through the evanescent field of the resonator. Direct temporal and spectral measurements reveal both the significant role of Casimir-Polder attraction and the manifestly quantum nature of the atom-cavity dynamics. The generation and manipulation of carrier spin polarization in semiconductors solely by electric fields has garnered significant attention as both an interesting manifestation of spin-orbit physics as well as a valuable capability for potential spintronics devices. One realization of these spin-orbit phenomena, the spin Hall effect (SHE), has been studied as a means of all-electrical spin current generation and spin separation in both semiconductor and metallic systems. Previous measurements of the spin Hall effect have focused on steady-state generation and time-averaged detection, without directly addressing the accumulation dynamics on the timescale of the spin coherence time. Here, we demonstrate time-resolved measurement of the dynamics of spin accumulation generated by the extrinsic spin Hall effect in a doped GaAs semiconductor channel. Using electrically-pumped time-resolved Kerr rotation, we image the accumulation, precession, and decay dynamics near the channel boundary with spatial and temporal resolution and identify multiple evolution time constants. We model these processes using time-dependent diffusion analysis utilizing both exact and numerical solution techniques and find that the underlying physical spin coherence time differs from the dynamical rates of spin accumulation and decay observed near the sample edges., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Electrically generated spin accumulation due to the spin Hall effect is imaged in n-GaAs channels using Kerr rotation microscopy, focusing on its spatial distribution and time-averaged behavior in a magnetic field. Spatially-resolved imaging reveals that spin accumulation observed in transverse arms develops due to longitudinal drift of spin polarization produced at the sample boundaries. One- and two-dimensional drift-diffusion modeling is used to explain these features, providing a more complete understanding of observations of spin accumulation and the spin Hall effect., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Strain induced spin-splitting is observed and characterized using pump-probe Kerr rotation spectroscopy in n-ZnSe epilayers grown on GaAs substrates. The spin-splitting energies are mapped out as a function of pump-probe separation, applied voltage, and temperature in a series of samples of varying epilayer thicknesses and compressive strain arising from epilayer-substrate lattice mismatch. The strain is independently quantified using photoluminescence and x-ray diffraction measurements. We observe that the magnitude of the spin splitting increases with applied voltage and temperature, and is highly crystal direction dependent, vanishing along [1 1-bar 0]., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy is used to monitor the room temperature electron spin dynamics of optical telecommunication wavelength AlInGaAs multiple quantum wells lattice-matched to InP. We found that electron spin coherence times and effective g-factors vary as a function of aluminum concentration. The measured electron spin coherence times of these multiple quantum wells, with wavelengths ranging from 1.26 microns to 1.53 microns, reach approximately 100 ps at room temperature, and the measured electron effective g-factors are in the range from -2.3 to -1.1., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Electrically-induced electron spin polarization is imaged in n-type ZnSe epilayers using Kerr rotation spectroscopy. Despite no evidence for an electrically-induced internal magnetic field, current-induced in-plane spin polarization is observed with characteristic spin lifetimes that decrease with doping density. The spin Hall effect is also observed, indicated by an electrically-induced out-of-plane spin polarization with opposite sign for spins accumulating on opposite edges of the sample. The spin Hall conductivity is estimated as 3 +/- 1.5 Ohms**-1 m**-1/|e| at 20 K, which is consistent with the extrinsic mechanism. Recent measurements of coherent electron spin dynamics reveal an antiferromagnetic s-d exchange coupling between conduction band electrons and electrons localized on Mn{2+} impurities in GaMnAs quantum wells. Here we discuss systematic measurements of the s-d exchange interaction in GaMnAs/AlGaAs quantum wells with different confinement potentials using time-resolved Kerr rotation. Extending previous investigations of the dependence of the s-d exchange, N{0}alpha, on well width, we find that its magnitude also depends on well depth. Both phenomena reduce to a general dependence on confinement energy, described by a band-mixing model of confinement-induced kinetic exchange in the conduction band., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We use time-resolved Faraday rotation to measure coherent spin dynamics in colloidal CdSe quantum dots charged in an electrochemical cell at room temperature. Filling of the 1Se electron level is demonstrated by the bleaching of the 1Se-1S3/2 absorption peak. One of the two Lande g-factors observed in uncharged quantum dots disappears upon filling of the 1Se electron state. The transverse spin coherence time, which is over 1 ns and is limited by inhomogeneous dephasing, also appears to increase with charging voltage. The amplitude of the spin precession signal peaks near the half-filling potential. Its evolution at charging potentials without any observable bleaching of the 1Se-1S3/2 transition suggests that the spin dynamics are influenced by low-energy surface states., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Growth of GaMnAs by molecular beam epitaxy is typically performed at low substrate temperatures (250C) and high As overpressures leading to the incorporation of excess As and Mn interstitials, which quench optical signals such as photoluminescence (PL). We report on optical-quality Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As/Al(0.4)Ga(0.6)As quantum wells (QWs) with x < 0.2% grown at a substrate temperature of 400C. Electrical and structural measurements demonstrate that this elevated temperature reduces As defects while allowing the substitutional incorporation of Mn into Ga sites. From a combination of Hall and secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements we estimate that at least 70-90% of the Mn incorporates substitutionally in all samples studied. The incorporation behavior shows both a substrate temperature and QW width dependence. The lower defect density of these heterostructures, compared to typical lower temperature grown GaMnAs, enables the observation of both polarization-resolved PL and coherent electron spin dynamics, from which the conduction band exchange parameter is extracted. No evidence of long-range Mn spin coupling is observed, whereas negative effective Curie temperatures indicate spin heating due to photoexcitation. The electron spin lifetime is maximized for light Mn doping and shows little magnetic field dependence indicating that the Dyakonov-Perel mechanism is dominant in these structures. PL spectra reveal a low energy peak from shallow donors, which because of the paramagnetic behavior of its PL polarization, we ascribe to Mn interstitials., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, and 1 table

Measurements of coherent electron spin dynamics in Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As/Al(0.4)Ga(0.6)As quantum wells with 0.0006% < x < 0.03% show an antiferromagnetic (negative) exchange bewteen s-like conduction band electrons and electrons localized in the d-shell of the Mn2+ impurities. The magnitude of the s-d exchange parameter, N0 alpha, varies as a function of well width indicative of a large and negative contribution due to kinetic exchange. In the limit of no quantum confinement, N0 alpha extrapolates to -0.09 +/- 0.03 eV indicating that antiferromagnetic s-d exchange is a bulk property of GaMnAs. Measurements of the polarization-resolved photoluminescence show strong discrepancy from a simple model of the exchange enhanced Zeeman splitting, indicative of additional complexity in the exchange split valence band., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and one action figure

Spin dynamics of optically excited electrons confined in asymmetric coupled quantum wells are investigated through time resolved Faraday rotation experiments. The inter-well coupling is shown to depend on applied electric field and barrier thickness. We observe three coupling regimes: independent spin precession in isolated quantum wells, incoherent spin transfer between single-well states, and coherent spin transfer in a highly coupled system. Relative values of the inter-well tunneling time, the electron spin lifetime, and the Larmor precession period appear to govern this behavior., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures
