An accurate low-energy dispersive parametrization of the scalar Kpi form factor was constructed some time ago in terms of a single parameter guided by the Callan-Treiman low-energy theorem. A similar twice subtracted dispersive parametrization for the vector Kpi form factor will be investigated here. The robustness of the parametrization of these two form factors will be studied in great detail. In particular the cut-off dependence, the isospin breaking effects and the possible, though not highly probable, presence of zeros in the form factors will be discussed. Interesting constraints in the latter case will be obtained from the soft-kaon analog of the Callan-Treiman theorem and a comparison with the recent tau --> K pi nu_tau data., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

I consider non standard EW couplings of light right-handed quarks to W and Z suggested in a systematic non decoupling bottom-up low-energy effective theory approach to possible extensions of the Standard Model. New experimental tests in K^L_{mu3} decays based on recent measurements and scalar form factor analysis are discussed. The SM Lagrangian without physical scalars is rewritten as the LO of a Low-Energy Effective Theory invariant under a higher non linear symmetry S_{nat} \supset SU(2)_W \times U(1)_Y. Soft breaking of S_{nat} defines a hierarchy of non standard effects dominated by universal couplings of right-handed quarks to W. Clean tests of a small admixture of right-handed quark currents directly coupled to the standard W are still lacking. We show that such non-standard couplings can be significantly constrained measuring the value of the scalar Kpi form factor at the Callan-Treiman point to a few percent. A realistic prospect of such a measurement in K^L_{mu3} decay based on an accurate dispersive representation of the scalar form factor is presented. The inadequacy of the currently used linear parametrisation is explained and illustrated using recent KTeV data. In this talk, we describe an effective theory for electroweak symmetry breaking without a physical Higgs, based on a symmetry larger than the electroweak gauge group. This symmetry forbids deviations from the Standard Model at the leading order in the appropriate chiral expansion. Indeed, the large symmetry allows for a consistent expansion of the effective theory in powers of momenta and spurions. Following previous work, we identify a symmetry S_nat that generalizes the concept of custodial symmetry, keeping under control deviations from the Standard Model (SM). To realize S_nat linearly, the space of gauge fields has to be extended. Covariant constraints formulated in terms of spurions reduce S_nat back to SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y. This allows for a covariant introduction of explicit S_nat-breaking parameters. We assume that S_nat is at play in a theory of electroweak symmetry-breaking without a light Higgs particle. We describe some consequences of this assumption, using a non-decoupling effective theory in which the loop expansion procedure is based on both momentum and spurion power counting, as in Chiral Perturbation Theory. A hierarchy of lepton-number violating effects follows. Leading corrections to the SM are non-oblique. The effective theory includes stable light right-handed neutrinos, with an unbroken Z_2 symmetry forbidding neutrino Dirac masses. nu_R contribution to dark matter places bounds on their masses., Comment: Corresponds to published version: added subsection VI-D about order-of-magnitude estimates

We reconsider the low-energy effective theory for Higgs-less electroweak symmetry breaking: we study the anomaly-matching in the situation where all Goldstone fields disappear from the spectrum as a result of the Higgs mechanism. We find that the global SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} symmetry of the underlying theory, which is spontaneously broken to SU(2)_{L+R} x U(1)_{B-L} has to be anomaly-free. For the sake of generality, we include the possibility of light spin-1/2 bound states resulting from the dynamics of the strongly-interacting symmetry-breaking sector, in addition to the Goldstone bosons. Such composite fermions may have non-standard couplings at the leading order, and an arbitrary total B-L charge. In order to perform the anomaly-matching in that case, we generalize the construction of the Wess-Zumino effective lagrangian. Composite fermions beyond the three known generations are theoretically allowed, and there are no restrictions from the anomaly-matching on their couplings nor on their U(1)_{B-L} charge. Absence of global anomalies for the composite sector as a whole does not preclude anomalous triple gauge boson couplings arising from composite fermion triangular diagrams. Inspired by recent developments of moose models we reconsider low-energy effective theories of Goldstone bosons, gauge fields and chiral fermions applied to low-energy QCD and to Higgs-less electroweak symmetry breaking. Couplings and the corresponding reduction of symmetry are introduced via constraints enforced by a set of non-propagating covariantly constant spurion fields. Relics of the latter are used as small expansion parameters conjointly with the usual low-energy expansion. Certain couplings can only appear at higher orders of the spurion expansion and consequently, they become naturally suppressed independently of the idea of dimensional deconstruction. At leading order this leads to a set of generalized Weinberg sum rules and to the suppression of non-standard couplings to fermions in Higgs-less EWSB models with the minimal particle content. Within the latter, higher spurion terms allow for a fermion mass matrix with the standard CKM structure and CP violation. In addition, Majorana masses for neutrinos are possible. In the framework of Euclidean QCD on a torus, we study the spectrum of the Dirac operator through inverse moments of its eigenvalues, averaged over topological sets of gluonic configurations. The large-volume dependence of these sums is related to chiral order parameters. We sketch how these results may be applied to lattice simulations in order to investigate the chiral phase transitions occurring when N_f increases. In particular, we demonstrate how Dirac inverse moments at different volumes could be compared to detect in a clean way the phase transition triggered by the suppression of the quark condensate and by the enhancement of the Zweig-rule violation in the vacuum channel., Comment: 46 pages, 7 figures, RevTex, published version

We argue that light quark loops produce a paramagnetic suppression of infrared-sensitive order parameters such as , as the number N_f of light fermions increases. The possibly strong dependence of on N_f is related to the observed Zweig rule violation in the scalar channel. Presuming the existence of a chiral phase transition for not too large N_f, we discuss the phenomenological possibilities of separately determining the two-flavour and three-flavour condensates and the quark mass ratio r=2m_s/(m_u+m_d). The decays tau -> 3 pi + nu(tau) are analyzed at one loop order in the framework of Generalized Chiral Perturbation Theory, in order to test the sensitivity to the size of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking parameters, contained in the S-wave. The latter, due to a kinematical suppression, at threshold, of the P-wave, is relatively large enough to be detectable at high energy machines, through azimuthal left-right asymmetries. This quantity (for the pi- pi- pi+ mode), integrated from threshold to Q^2 = 0.35 GeV^2, varies from (17 +- 3) % in the standard case of large condensate up to (40 +- 5) % in the extreme case of tiny condensate. The feasibility of such measurement at high luminosity colliders (e.g. CLEO) is discussed. Considering QCD in an Euclidean box, the mechanism of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry (SB$\chi$S) is analyzed in terms of average properties of lowest eigenstates of the Dirac operator. A formal analogy between the pion decay constant and conductivity in disordered systems is established. It follows that SB$\chi$S results from a subtle balance between the density of Euclidean quark states and their mobility. SB$\chi$S can be realized either with $<\bar q q > =0$, provided the low density of states is compensated by a high mobility, or with a non-vanishing condensate, provided the mobility is suppressed. Precise measurement of the $\pi\pi$-phase shift $\delta^0_0(E)$ at very low energies would provide, for the first time, the experimental evidence in favour of or against the existence of a large quark condensate in the QCD vacuum, which is standardly postulated as the mechanism of the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry in QCD.
