1. Optimized experiment design and analysis for fully randomized benchmarking

Abstract

Randomized benchmarking (RB) is a widely used strategy to assess the quality of available quantum gates in a computational context. RB involves applying known random sequences of gates to an initial state and using the statistics of a final measurement step to determine an effective depolarizing error per step of the sequence, which is a metric of gate quality. Here we investigate the advantages of fully randomized benchmarking, where a new random sequence is drawn for each experimental trial. The advantages of full randomization include smaller confidence intervals on the inferred step error, the ability to use maximum likelihood analysis without heuristics, straightforward optimization of the sequence lengths, and the ability to model and measure behaviors that go beyond the typical assumption of time-independent error rates. We discuss models of time-dependent or non-Markovian errors that generalize the basic RB model of a single exponential decay of the success probability. For any of these models, we implement a concrete protocol to minimize the uncertainty of the estimated parameters given a fixed time constraint on the complete experiment, and we implement a maximum likelihood analysis. We consider several previously published experiments and determine the potential for improvements with optimized full randomization. We experimentally observe such improvements in Clifford randomized benchmarking experiments on a single trapped ion qubit at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). For an experiment with uniform lengths and intentionally repeated sequences the step error was $2.42^{+0.30}_{-0.22}\times 10^{-5}$, and for an optimized fully randomized experiment of the same total duration the step error was $2.57^{+0.07}_{-0.06}\times 10^{-5}$. We find a substantial decrease in the uncertainty of the step error as a result of optimized fully randomized benchmarking.

Abstract

Poor diet quality is a key modifiable risk factor for hypertension and disproportionately impacts low-income women. \sw{Analyzing diet-driven hypertensive outcomes in this demographic is challenging due to the complexity of dietary data and selection bias when the data come from surveys, a main data source for understanding diet-disease relationships in understudied populations. Supervised Bayesian model-based clustering methods summarize dietary data into latent patterns that holistically capture relationships among foods and a known health outcome but do not sufficiently account for complex survey design. This leads to biased estimation and inference and lack of generalizability of the patterns}. To address this, we propose a supervised weighted overfitted latent class analysis (SWOLCA) based on a Bayesian pseudo-likelihood approach that integrates sampling weights into an exposure-outcome model for discrete data. Our model adjusts for stratification, clustering, and informative sampling, and handles modifying effects via interaction terms within a Markov chain Monte Carlo Gibbs sampling algorithm. Simulation studies confirm that the SWOLCA model exhibits good performance in terms of bias, precision, and coverage. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015-2018), we demonstrate the utility of our model by characterizing dietary patterns associated with hypertensive outcomes among low-income women in the United States., Comment: 16 pages, 8 tables, 7 figures

Abstract

Radiofrequency-driven resonant spin rotators are routinely used as standard instruments in polarization experiments in particle and nuclear physics. Maintaining the continuous exact parametric spin-resonance condition of the equality of the spin rotator and the spin precession frequency during operation constitutes one of the challenges. We present a detailed analytic description of the impact of detuning the exact spin resonance on the vertical and the in-plane precessing components of the polarization. An important part of the formalism presented here is the consideration of experimentally relevant spin-decoherence effects. We discuss applications of the developed formalism to the interpretation of the experimental data on the novel pilot bunch approach to control the spin-resonance condition during the operation of the radiofrequency-driven Wien filter that is used as a spin rotator in the first direct deuteron electric dipole moment measurement at COSY. We emphasize the potential importance of the hitherto unexplored phase of the envelope of the horizontal polarization as an indicator of the stability of the radiofrequency-driven spin rotations in storage rings. The work presented here serves as a satellite publication to the work published concurrently on the proof of principle experiment about the so-called pilot bunch approach that was developed to provide co-magnetometry for the deuteron electric dipole moment experiment at COSY., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

In polarization experiments at storage rings, one of the challenges is to maintain the spin-resonance condition of a radio-frequency spin rotator with the spin-precessions of the orbiting particles. Time-dependent variations of the magnetic fields of ring elements lead to unwanted variations of the spin precession frequency. We report here on a solution to this problem by shielding (or masking) one of the bunches stored in the ring from the high-frequency fields of the spin rotator, so that the masked pilot bunch acts as a co-magnetometer for the other signal bunch, tracking fluctuations in the ring on a time scale of about one second. While the new method was developed primarily for searches of electric dipole moments of charged particles, it may have far-reaching implications for future spin physics facilities, such as the EIC and NICA., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures + references + supplemental material (6 pages, 2 figures, 6 tables + references)

Abstract

The aCORN experiment measures the electron-antineutrino $a$-coefficient in free neutron decay. We update the previous aCORN results to include radiative and recoil corrections to first order, and discuss a key issue in the comparison of results from different $a$-coefficient experimental methods when these effects are considered. The corrected combined result is $\overline{a} = -0.10779 \pm 0.00125\, ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.00133\, ({\rm sys})$, averaged over the full Fermi neutron beta spectrum. The corresponding corrected result for the ratio of weak coupling constants $\lambda = G_A/G_V$ is $\lambda = -1.2712 \pm 0.0061$. This improves agreement with previous $a$-coefficient experiments, in particular the 2020 aSPECT result

Abstract

We show experimentally that a broad class of interactions involving quantum harmonic oscillators can be made stronger (amplified) using a unitary squeezing protocol. While our demonstration uses the motional and spin states of a single trapped $^{25}$Mg$^{+}$ ion, the scheme applies generally to Hamiltonians involving just a single harmonic oscillator as well as Hamiltonians coupling the oscillator to another quantum degree of freedom such as a qubit, covering a large range of systems of interest in quantum information and metrology applications. Importantly, the protocol does not require knowledge of the parameters of the Hamiltonian to be amplified, nor does it require a well-defined phase relationship between the squeezing interaction and the rest of the system dynamics, making it potentially useful in instances where certain aspects of a signal or interaction may be unknown or uncontrolled.

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

PurposeCombination programmed cell death protein 1/cytotoxic T-cell lymphocyte-4-blockade and dual BRAF/MEK inhibition have each shown significant clinical benefit in patients with BRAFV600-mutant metastatic melanoma, leading to broad regulatory approval. Little prospective data exist to guide the choice of either initial therapy or treatment sequence in this population. This study was conducted to determine which initial treatment or treatment sequence produced the best efficacy.Patients and methodsIn a phase III trial, patients with treatment-naive BRAFV600-mutant metastatic melanoma were randomly assigned to receive either combination nivolumab/ipilimumab (arm A) or dabrafenib/trametinib (arm B) in step 1, and at disease progression were enrolled in step 2 to receive the alternate therapy, dabrafenib/trametinib (arm C) or nivolumab/ipilimumab (arm D). The primary end point was 2-year overall survival (OS). Secondary end points were 3-year OS, objective response rate, response duration, progression-free survival, crossover feasibility, and safety.ResultsA total of 265 patients were enrolled, with 73 going onto step 2 (27 in arm C and 46 in arm D). The study was stopped early by the independent Data Safety Monitoring Committee because of a clinically significant end point being achieved. The 2-year OS for those starting on arm A was 71.8% (95% CI, 62.5 to 79.1) and arm B 51.5% (95% CI, 41.7 to 60.4; log-rank P = .010). Step 1 progression-free survival favored arm A (P = .054). Objective response rates were arm A: 46.0%; arm B: 43.0%; arm C: 47.8%; and arm D: 29.6%. Median duration of response was not reached for arm A and 12.7 months for arm B (P < .001). Crossover occurred in 52% of patients with documented disease progression. Grade ≥ 3 toxicities occurred with similar frequency between arms, and regimen toxicity profiles were as anticipated.ConclusionCombination nivolumab/ipilimumab followed by BRAF and MEK inhibitor therapy, if necessary, should be the preferred treatment sequence for a large majority of patients.

Abstract

Based on the notion that the local dark-matter field of axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) in our Galaxy induces oscillating couplings to the spins of nucleons and nuclei (via the electric dipole moment of the latter and/or the paramagnetic axion-wind effect), we establish the feasibility of a new method to search for ALPs in storage rings. Based on previous work that allows us to maintain the in-plane polarization of a stored deuteron beam for a few hundred seconds, we performed a first proof-of-principle experiment at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY to scan momenta near 970 MeV/c. This entailed a scan of the spin precession frequency. At resonance between the spin precession frequency of deuterons and the ALP-induced EDM oscillation frequency there will be an accumulation of the polarization component out of the ring plane. Since the axion frequency is unknown, the momentum of the beam and consequently the spin precession frequency were ramped to search for a vertical polarization change that would occur when the resonance is crossed. At COSY, four beam bunches with different polarization directions were used to make sure that no resonance was missed because of the unknown relative phase between the polarization precession and the axion/ALP field. A frequency window of 1.5-kHz width around the spin precession frequency of 121 kHz was scanned. We describe the experimental procedure and a test of the methodology with the help of a radiofrequency Wien filter located on the COSY ring. No ALP resonance was observed. Abstract

The unique global feature of COSY is its ability to accelerate, store and manipulate polarized proton and deuteron beams. In the recent past, these beams have been used primarily for precision measurements, in particular in connection with the study of charged particle EDMs (Electric Dipole Moment) in storage rings. The role of COSY as a R&D facility and for initial (static and oscillating) EDM measurements can hardly be overestimated. Unfortunately, as a consequence of the strategic decisions of Forschungszentrum J\"ulich and the subsequent "TransFAIR" agreement between FZJ and GSI Darmstadt, it is currently planned to stop the operation of COSY by the end of 2024. The various groups working with polarized beams at COSY felt it important to collect information on essential measurements to be performed until the termination of machine operation. These experiments, briefly described in this document along with an estimate of the beam time required, serve as pathfinder investigations toward an EDM storage ring and Spin for FAIR., Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

Precise control of charged particles in radio-frequency (Paul) traps requires minimising excess micromotion induced by stray electric fields. We present a method to detect and compensate such fields through amplitude modulation of the radio-frequency trapping field. Modulation at frequencies close to the motional modes of the trapped particle excites coherent motion whose amplitude linearly depends on the stray field. In trapped-ion experiments, this motion can be detected by recording the arrival times of photons scattered during laser cooling. Only a single laser beam is required to resolve fields in multiple directions. In a demonstration using a $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}^{+}$ ion in a surface electrode trap, we achieve a sensitivity of $0.1\, \mathrm{V}\, \mathrm{m}^{-1}\, /\, \sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ and a minimal uncertainty of $0.015\, \mathrm{V}\, \mathrm{m}^{-1}$., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures (+appendix of 5 pages, 4 figures)

Abstract

We present measurements of differential cross sections and analyzing powers for the elastic 2H(~d; d)d scattering process. The data were obtained using a 130 MeV polarized deuteron beam. Cross sections and spin observables of the elastic scattering process were measured at the AGOR facility at KVI using two independent setups, namely BINA and BBS. The data harvest at setups are in excellent agreement with each other and allowed us to carry out a thorough systematic analysis to provide the most accurate data in elastic deuteron-deuteron scattering at intermediate energies. The results can be used to confront upcoming state-of-the-art calculations in the four-nucleon scattering domain, and will, thereby, provide further insights in the dynamics of three- and four-nucleon forces in few-nucleon systems., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The aCORN experiment measures the neutron decay electron-antineutrino correlation ($a$-coefficient) using a novel method based on an asymmetry in proton time-of-flight for events where the beta electron and recoil proton are detected in delayed coincidence. We report the data analysis and result from the second run at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, using the high-flux cold neutron beam on the new NG-C neutron guide end position: $a = -0.10758 \pm 0.00136 (\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.00148 (\mbox{sys})$. This is consistent within uncertainties with the result from the first aCORN run on the NG-6 cold neutron beam. Combining the two aCORN runs we obtain $a = -0.10782 \pm 0.00124 (\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.00133 (\mbox{sys})$, which has an overall relative standard uncertainty of 1.7 \%. We demonstrate remote entanglement of trapped-ion qubits via a quantum-optical fiber link with fidelity and rate approaching those of local operations. Two ${}^{88}$Sr${}^{+}$ qubits are entangled via the polarization degree of freedom of two photons which are coupled by high-numerical-aperture lenses into single-mode optical fibers and interfere on a beamsplitter. A novel geometry allows high-efficiency photon collection while maintaining unit fidelity for ion-photon entanglement. Abstract

BackgroundThe role of elective whole-pelvis radiotherapy (WPRT) remains controversial. Few studies have investigated it in Gleason grade group (GG) 5 prostate cancer (PCa), known to have a high risk of nodal metastases.ObjectiveTo assess the impact of WPRT on patients with GG 5 PCa treated with external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT) or EBRT with a brachytherapy boost (EBRT+BT).Design, setting, and participantsWe identified 1170 patients with biopsy-proven GG 5 PCa from 11 centers in the United States and one in Norway treated between 2000 and 2013 (734 with EBRT and 436 with EBRT+BT).Outcome measurements and statistical analysisBiochemical recurrence-free survival (bRFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and prostate cancer-specific survival (PCSS) were compared using Cox proportional hazards models with propensity score adjustment.Results and limitationsA total of 299 EBRT patients (41%) and 320 EBRT+BT patients (73%) received WPRT. The adjusted 5-yr bRFS rates with WPRT in the EBRT and EBRT+BT groups were 66% and 88%, respectively. Without WPRT, these rates for the EBRT and EBRT+BT groups were 58% and 78%, respectively. The median follow-up was 5.6yr. WPRT was associated with improved bRFS among patients treated with EBRT+BT (hazard ratio [HR] 0.5, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.2-0.9, p=0.02), but no evidence for improvement was found in those treated with EBRT (HR 0.8, 95% CI 0.6-1.2, p=0.4). WPRT was not significantly associated with improved DMFS or PCSS in the EBRT group (HR 1.1, 95% CI 0.7-1.7, p=0.8 for DMFS and HR 0.7, 95% CI 0.4-1.1, p=0.1 for PCSS), or in the EBRT+BT group (HR 0.6, 95% CI 0.3-1.4, p=0.2 for DMFS and HR 0.5 95% CI 0.2-1.2, p=0.1 for PCSS).ConclusionsWPRT was not associated with improved PCSS or DMFS in patients with GG 5 PCa who received either EBRT or EBRT+BT. However, WPRT was associated with a significant improvement in bRFS among patients receiving EBRT+BT. Strategies to optimize WPRT, potentially with the use of advanced imaging techniques to identify occult nodal disease, are warranted.Patient summaryWhen men with a high Gleason grade prostate cancer receive radiation with external radiation and brachytherapy, the addition of radiation to the pelvis results in a longer duration of prostate-specific antigen control. However, we did not find a difference in their survival from prostate cancer or in their survival without metastatic disease. We also did not find a benefit for radiation to the pelvis in men who received radiation without brachytherapy.

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate the connection between a magnetic storage ring with additional sextupole fields set so that the x and y chromaticities vanish and the maximizing of the lifetime of in-plane polarization (IPP) for a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam. The IPP magnitude was measured by continuously monitoring the down-up scattering asymmetry (sensitive to sideways polarization) in an in-beam, carbon-target polarimeter and unfolding the precession of the IPP due to the magnetic anomaly of the deuteron. The optimum operating conditions for a long IPP lifetime were made by scanning the field of the storage ring sextupole magnet families while observing the rate of IPP loss during storage of the beam. The beam was bunched and electron cooled. The IPP losses appear to arise from the change of the orbit circumference, and consequently the particle speed and spin tune, due to the transverse betatron oscillations of individual particles in the beam. Abstract

Ion traps are often loaded from atomic beams produced by resistively heated ovens. We demonstrate an atomic oven which has been designed for fast control of the atomic flux density and reproducible construction. We study the limiting time constants of the system and, in tests with $^{40}\textrm{Ca}$, show we can reach the desired level of flux in 12s, with no overshoot. Abstract

Quantum bits based on individual trapped atomic ions constitute a promising technology for building a quantum computer, with all the elementary operations having been achieved with the necessary precision for some error-correction schemes. However, the essential two-qubit logic gate used for generating quantum entanglement has hitherto always been performed in an adiabatic regime, where the gate is slow compared with the characteristic motional frequencies of ions in the trap, giving logic speeds of order 10kHz. There have been numerous proposals for performing gates faster than this natural "speed limit" of the trap. We implement the method of Steane et al., which uses tailored laser pulses: these are shaped on 10 ns timescales to drive the ions' motion along trajectories designed such that the gate operation is insensitive to optical phase fluctuations. This permits fast (MHz-rate) quantum logic which is robust to this important source of experimental error. We demonstrate entanglement generation for gate times as short as 480ns; this is less than a single oscillation period of an ion in the trap, and 8 orders of magnitude shorter than the memory coherence time measured in similar calcium-43 hyperfine qubits. The method's power is most evident at intermediate timescales, where it yields a gate error more than ten times lower than conventional techniques; for example, we achieve a 1.6 us gate with fidelity 99.8%. Still faster gates are possible at the price of higher laser intensity. The method requires only a single amplitude-shaped pulse and one pair of beams derived from a continuous-wave laser, and offers the prospect of combining the unrivalled coherence properties, operation fidelities and optical connectivity of trapped-ion qubits with the sub-microsecond logic speeds usually associated with solid state devices., Comment: author submitted version

Abstract

Backscatter of electrons from a beta spectrometer, with incomplete energy deposition, can lead to undesirable effects in many types of experiments. We present and discuss the design and operation of a backscatter-suppressed beta spectrometer that was developed as part of a program to measure the electron-antineutrino correlation coefficient in neutron beta decay (aCORN). An array of backscatter veto detectors surrounds a plastic scintillator beta energy detector. The spectrometer contains an axial magnetic field gradient, so electrons are efficiently admitted but have a low probability for escaping back through the entrance after backscattering. Abstract

Objective: Genetic stock identification (GSI) can be an effective tool for fisheries management, but development of reference baselines for species with broad geographic distributions can be challenging. Mixed‐stock fisheries for Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha have utilized GSI analyses for decades with various genetic baselines, but these have largely become outdated with advances in technology that enable more efficient genotyping. Thus, our goals were to (1) create nested baselines of genotypic data for Chinook Salmon throughout their entire natural range using existing data from multiple sources and (2) evaluate the utility of those nested baselines to conduct accurate hierarchical GSI of mixture proportions or the stock identification of individual fish. Methods: In this study, we compiled a large genetic baseline of single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers for 389 populations that encompass the entire geographic range of Chinook Salmon. We used cross validation and realistic mixture simulations to test the accuracy of the baseline in generating GSI estimates. Result: We demonstrated that a multi‐tiered assignment approach can provide high accuracy at both tier 1 (broadscale, with three coastwide reporting groups; 97.8% mean accuracy) and tier 2 (fine‐scale regional reporting groups; up to 97.7% mean accuracy) levels. Realistic mixture simulations showed that this multi‐tiered approach can provide highly effective GSI results for several common mixed‐stock fisheries applications in the Pacific Ocean. Conclusion: This new SNP baseline and the multi‐tiered assignment approach provide the most comprehensive rangewide GSI baseline for Chinook Salmon over any previous application and enable highly accurate estimates for GSI purposes. 44. Should I Stay or Should I Go? Perceived Barriers to Pursuing a University Education for Persons in Rural Areas

Abstract

A university education can provide an individual with greater employment options, higher income potential, and improved health and quality of life, yet young persons from rural areas remain less likely to attend university than their urban counterparts. This study explores the perceived personal, social, and cultural factors that might create barriers for young persons from rural areas. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 individuals living in rural areas in Alberta, aged 18 to 23 years, who had not attended university. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, we identified 11 major themes, which were then organized into a conceptual model to illustrate the interacting nature of these factors and their influence on a person's decision to pursue a university education. An examination of this model and its associated themes may help reveal the possible barriers young persons from rural areas experience when deciding whether or not to attend university.

46. We Are Wilderness Explorers: A Review of Outdoor Education in Canada

Abstract

Background: Outdoor education (OE) should be understood in place, time, and culture because it is not a universal teaching approach. We currently know little about what constitutes the "Canadian ways" of doing OE or what students gain from the experience. Purpose: Our goal was to (a) identify the underlying factors guiding OE programs in Canada and (b) describe the learning outcomes and psychosocial benefits of engaging in OE from the students' perspective. Methodology/Approach: We conducted a systematic review of qualitative studies that examined OE in Canada. We searched published studies from electronic databases (1980-2018). We used meta-ethnography to synthesize the findings. Findings/Conclusions: We reviewed 21 studies reporting on the experiences of 508 students. Using thematic analysis, we identified eight themes highlighting process, goals, and learning outcomes. We developed a model that describes the common teaching components, learning process, and short-term outcomes for OE in Canada. Implications: Our results represent the first study to synthesize OE published research in Canada, which help form a unified voice and a distinctive national identity for OE in Canada. Our results serve as a catalyst for educators to share ideas, practices, and learning goals.
