Reliable and consistent preparation of atom probe tomography (APT) specimens from aqueous and hydrated biological specimens remains a significant challenge. One particularly difficult process step is the use of a focused ion beam (FIB) instrument for preparing the required needle-shaped specimen, typically involving a "lift-out" procedure of a small sample of material. Here, two alternative substrate designs are introduced that enable using FIB only for sharpening, along with example APT datasets. The first design is a laser-cut FIB-style half-grid close to those used for transmission-electron microscopy, that can be used in a grid holder compatible with APT pucks. The second design is a larger, standalone self-supporting substrate called a "crown", with several specimen positions that self-aligns in APT pucks, prepared by electrical discharge machining (EDM). Both designs are made nanoporous, to provide strength to the liquid-substrate interface, using chemical and vacuum dealloying. We select alpha brass a simple, widely available, lower-cost alternative to previously proposed substrates. We present the resulting designs, APT data, and provide suggestions to help drive wider community adoption.

Gas-solid reactions are cornerstones of many catalytic and redox processes that will underpin the energy and sustainability transition. The specific case of hydrogen-based iron oxide reduction is the foundation to render the global steel industry fossil-free, an essential target as iron production is the largest single industrial emitter of carbon dioxide. Our perception of gas-solid reactions has not only been limited by the availability of state-of-the-art techniques which can delve into the reacted solids in great structural and chemical detail, but we continue to miss an important reaction partner that defines the thermodynamics and kinetics of gas phase reactions: the gas molecules. In this investigation, we use the latest development in cryogenic atom probe tomography to study the quasi in-situ evolution of gas phase heavy water at iron-iron oxide interfaces resulting from the direct reduction of iron oxide by deuterium gas at 700{\deg}C. The findings provide new insights into the formation kinetics and location of water formed during hydrogen-based reduction of FeO, an its interaction with the ongoing redox reaction.

The upcoming flexible ultra-thin glass for foldable displays has attracted widespread attention as an alternative to rigid electronic smartphones. However, the detailed compositional effect of the chemical strengthening of the glass is not well understood. The spatially resolved chemistry and the depth of compression layer of tempered glass is far from being clear. In this study, commonly-used X-ray spectroscopy techniques and atom probe tomography (APT) were used comparatively to investigate the distribution of constituent elements in two representative smartphone glass samples: non-tempered and chemically-tempered glasses. Using APT, analysing the alkalis (Li, Na, K, Ca) that could impact the failure of the tempered glass was feasible at sub-nanoscale resolution; demonstrating that APT can be regarded as an alternative technique for imaging chemical distribution in glass for mobile applications.

The worldwide developments of electric vehicles, as well as large-scale or grid-scale energy storage to compensate the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation has generated a surge of interest in battery technology. Understanding the factors controlling battery capacity and, critically, their degradation mechanisms to ensure long-term, sustainable and safe operation requires detailed knowledge of their microstructure and chemistry, and their evolution under operating conditions, on the nanoscale. Atom probe tomography (APT) provides compositional mapping of materials in three-dimensions with sub-nanometre resolution, and is poised to play a key role in battery research. However, APT is underpinned by an intense electric-field that can drive lithium migration, and many battery materials are reactive oxides, requiring careful handling and sample transfer. Here, we report on the analysis of both anode and cathode materials, and show that electric-field driven migration can be suppressed by using shielding by embedding powder particles in a metallic matrix or by using a thin conducting surface layer. We demonstrate that for a typical cathode material, cryogenic specimen preparation and transport under ultra-high vacuum leads to major delithiation of the specimen during the analysis. In contrast, transport of specimens through air enables analysis of the material. Finally, we discuss the possible physical underpinnings and discuss ways forward to enable shield of the electric field, which helps address the challenges inherent to the APT analysis of battery materials.

Hydrogen embrittlement can cause a dramatic deterioration of the mechanical properties of high-strength metallic materials. Despite decades of experimental and modelling studies, the exact underlying mechanisms behind hydrogen embrittlement remain elusive. To unlock understanding of the mechanism and thereby help mitigate the influence of hydrogen and the associated embrittlement, it is essential to examine the interactions of hydrogen with structural defects such as grain boundaries, dislocations and stacking faults. Atom probe tomography (APT) can, in principle, analyse hydrogen located specifically at such microstructural features but faces strong challenges when it comes to charging specimens with hydrogen or deuterium. Here, we describe three different workflows enabling hydrogen/deuterium charging of site-specific APT specimens: namely cathodic, plasma and gas charging. We discuss in detail the caveats of the different approaches in order to help with future research efforts and facilitate further studies of hydrogen in metals. Our study demonstrates successful cathodic and gas charging, with the latter being more promising for the analysis of the high-strength steels at the core of our work.

Metal nano-aerogels combine a large surface area, a high structural stability, and a high catalytic activity towards a variety of chemical reactions. The performance of such nanostructures is underpinned by the atomic-level distribution of their constituents. Yet monitoring their sub-nanoscale structure and composition to guide property optimization remains extremely challenging. Here, we synthesized Pd nano-aerogels from a K2PdCl4 precursor and two different NaBH4 reductant concentrations in distilled water. Atom probe tomography reveals that the aerogel is poly-crystalline and that impurities (Na, K) are integrated from the solution into grain boundaries. Ab initio calculations indicate that these impurities preferentially bound to the Pd-metal surface and are ultimately found in grain boundaries forming as the particles coalesce during synthesis, with Na atoms thermodynamically equilibrating with the surrounding solution and K atoms remaining between growing grains. If controlled, impurity integration, i.e. grain boundary decoration, may offer opportunities for designing new nano-aerogels.

The eutectic Ga-In (EGaIn) alloy has low vapor pressure, low toxicity, high thermal and electrical conductivities, and thus has shown a great potential for smart material applications. For such applications, EGaIn is maintained above its melting point, below which it undergoes solidification and phase separation. A scientific understanding of the structural and compositional evolution during thermal cycling could help further assess the application range of low-melting-point fusible alloys. Here, we use an integrated suite of cryogenically-enabled advanced microscopy & microanalysis to better understand phase separation and (re)mixing processes in EGaIn. We reveal an overlooked thermal-stimulus-response behaviour for frozen mesoscale EGaIn at cryogenic temperatures, with a sudden volume expansion observed during in-situ heat-cycling, associated with the immiscibility between Ga and In during cooling and the formation of metastable Ga phases. These results emphasize the importance of the kinetics of rejuvenation, and open new paths for EGaIn as a self-healing material.

Atom probe tomography (APT) helps elucidate the link between the nanoscale chemical variations and physical properties, but it has limited structural resolution. Field ion microscopy (FIM), a predecessor technique to APT, is capable of attaining atomic resolution along certain sets of crystallographic planes albeit at the expense of elemental identification. We demonstrate how two commercially-available atom probe instruments, one with a straight flight path and one fitted with a reflectron-lens, can be used to acquire time-of-flight mass spectrometry data concomitant with a FIM experiment. We outline various experimental protocols making use of temporal and spatial correlations to best discriminate field evaporated signals from the large field ionised background signal, demonstrating an unsophisticated yet efficient data mining strategy to provide this discrimination. We discuss the remaining experimental challenges that need be addressed, notably concerned with accurate detection and identification of individual field evaporated ions contained within the high field ionised flux that contributes to a FIM image. Our hybrid experimental approach can, in principle, exhibit true atomic resolution with elemental discrimination capabilities, neither of which atom probe nor field ion microscopy can individually fully deliver - thereby making this new approach, here broadly termed analytical field ion microscope (aFIM), unique., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Imaging individual vacancies in solids and revealing their interactions with solute atoms remains one of the frontiers in microscopy and microanalysis. Here we study a creep-deformed binary Ni-2 at.% Ta alloy. Atom probe tomography reveals a random distribution of Ta. Field ion microscopy, with contrast interpretation supported by density-functional theory and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, evidences a positive correlation of tantalum with vacancies. Our results support solute-vacancy binding, which explains improvement in creep resistance of Ta-containing Ni-based superalloys and helps guide future material design strategies., Comment: Submitted to Physics Review Letter

Atom probe tomography is often introduced as providing "atomic-scale" mapping of the composition of materials and as such is often exploited to analyse atomic neighbourhoods within a material. Yet quantifying the actual spatial performance of the technique in a general case remains challenging, as they depend on the material system being investigated as well as on the specimen's geometry. Here, by using comparisons with field-ion microscopy experiments and field-ion imaging and field evaporation simulations, we provide the basis for a critical reflection on the spatial performance of atom probe tomography in the analysis of pure metals, low alloyed systems and concentrated solid solutions (i.e. akin to high-entropy alloys). The spatial resolution imposes strong limitations on the possible interpretation of measured atomic neighbourhoods, and directional neighbourhood analyses restricted to the depth are expected to be more robust. With 1.85 billion tons produced per year, steel is the most important material class in terms of volume and environmental impact. While steel is a sustainability enabler, for instance through lightweight design, magnetic devices, and efficient turbines, its primary production is not. For 3000 years, iron has been reduced from ores using carbon. Today 2.1 tons CO2 are produced per ton of steel, causing 30% of the global CO2 emissions in the manufacturing sector, which translates to 6.5% of the global CO2 emissions. These numbers qualify iron- and steel-making as the largest single industrial greenhouse gas emission source. The envisaged future industrial route to mitigate these CO2 emissions targets green hydrogen as a reductant. Although this reaction has been studied for decades, its kinetics is not well understood, particularly during the wustite reduction step which is dramatically slower than the hematite reduction. Many rate-limiting factors of this reaction are set by the micro- and nanostructure as well as the local chemistry of the ores. Their quantification allows knowledge-driven ore preparation and process optimization to make the hydrogen-based reduction of iron ores commercially viable, enabling the required massive CO2 mitigation to ease global warming. Here, we report on a multi-scale structure and composition analysis of iron reduced from hematite with pure H2, reaching down to near-atomic scale.

The incorporation of impurities during the chemical synthesis of nanomaterials is usually uncontrolled and rarely reported because of the formidable challenge that constitutes measuring trace amounts of often light elements with sub nanometre spatial resolution. Yet these foreign elements influence functional properties, by e.g. doping. Here we demonstrate how the synthesis and partial reduction reaction on hollow TiO2 nanowires leads to the introduction of parts-per-millions of boron, sodium, and nitrogen from the reduction reaction with sodium borohydride at the surface of the TiO2 nanowire. This doping explains the presence of oxygen vacancies at the surface that enhance the activity. Our results obtained on model metal-oxide nanomaterials shed light on the general process leading to the uncontrolled incorporation of trace impurities that can have a dramatic effect on their potential use in energy-harvesting applications.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) nanosheet is a two-dimensional material with high electron mobility and with high potential for applications in catalysis and electronics. We synthesized MoS$_2$ nanosheets using a one-pot wet-chemical synthesis route with and without Re-doping. Atom probe tomography revealed that 3.8 at.% Re is homogeneously distributed within the Re-doped sheets. Other impurities are found also integrated within the material: light elements including C, N, O, and Na, locally enriched up to 0.1 at.%, as well as heavy elements such as V and W. Analysis of the non-doped sample reveals that the W and V likely originate from the Mo precursor.

Pinning-type magnets maintaining high coercivity, i.e. the ability to sustain magnetization, at high temperature are at the core of thriving clean-energy technologies. Among these, Sm2Co17-based magnets are excellent candidates owing to their high-temperature stability. However, despite decades of efforts to optimize the intragranular microstructure, the coercivity currently only reaches 20~30% of the theoretical limits. Here, the roles of the grain-interior nanostructure and the grain boundaries in controlling coercivity are disentangled by an emerging magneto-electric approach. Through hydrogen charging/discharging by applying voltages of only ~ 1 V, the coercivity is reversibly tuned by an unprecedented value of ~ 1.3 T. In situ magneto-structural measurements and atomic-scale tracking of hydrogen atoms reveal that the segregation of hydrogen atoms at the grain boundaries, rather than the change of the crystal structure, dominates the reversible and substantial change of coercivity. Hydrogen lowers the local magnetocrystalline anisotropy and facilitates the magnetization reversal starting from the grain boundaries. Our study reveals the previously neglected critical role of grain boundaries in the conventional magnetisation-switching paradigm, suggesting a critical reconsideration of strategies to overcome the coercivity limits in permanent magnets, via for instance atomic-scale grain boundary engineering.

Imaging of liquids and cryogenic biological materials by electron microscopy has been recently enabled by innovative approaches for specimen preparation and the fast development of optimised instruments for cryo-enabled electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Yet, Cryo-EM typically lacks advanced analytical capabilities, in particular for light elements. With the development of protocols for frozen wet specimen preparation, atom probe tomography (APT) could advantageously complement insights gained by cryo-EM. Here, we report on different approaches that have been recently proposed to enable the analysis of relatively large volumes of frozen liquids from either a flat substrate or the fractured surface of a wire. Both allowed for analysing water ice layers which are several microns thick consisting of pure water, pure heavy-water and aqueous solutions. We discuss the merits of both approaches, and prospects for further developments in this area. Preliminary results raise numerous questions, in part concerning the physics underpinning field evaporation. The long-term safety of water-based nuclear reactors relies in part on the reliability of zirconium-based nuclear fuel. Yet the progressive ingress of hydrogen during service makes zirconium alloys subject to delayed hydride cracking. Here, we use a combination of electron back-scattered diffraction and atom probe tomography to investigate specific microstructural features from the as-received sample and in the blocky-alpha microstructure, before and after electrochemical charging with hydrogen or deuterium followed by a low temperature heat treatment at 400C for 5 hours followed by furnace cooling at a rate of 0. 5C per min. Specimens for atom probe were prepared at cryogenic temperature to avoid the formation of spurious hydrides. We report on the compositional evolution of grains and grain boundaries over the course of the sample's thermal history, as well as the ways the growth of the hydrides modifies locally the composition and the structure of the alloy. We observe a significant amount of deuterium left in the matrix, even after the slow cooling and growth of the hydrides. Stacking faults form ahead of the growth front and Sn segregates at the hydride-matrix interface and on these faults. We propose that this segregation may facilitate further growth of the hydride. Our systematic investigation enables us discuss how the solute distribution affects the evolution of the alloy's properties during its service lifetime.

Observing solute hydrogen (H) in matter is a formidable challenge, yet, enabling quantitative imaging of H at the atomic-scale is critical to understand its deleterious influence on the mechanical strength of many metallic alloys that has resulted in many catastrophic failures of engineering parts and structures. Here, we report on the APT analysis of hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) within the nanostructure of an ultra-high strength steel with high resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. Cold drawn, severely deformed pearlitic steel wires (Fe-0.98C-0.31Mn-0.20Si-0.20Cr-0.01Cu-0.006P-0.007S wt.%, {\epsilon}=3.1) contains cementite decomposed during the pre-deformation of the alloy and ferrite. We find H and D within the decomposed cementite, and at some interfaces with the surrounding ferrite. To ascertain the origin of the H/D signal obtained in APT, we explored a series of experimental workflows including cryogenic specimen preparation and cryogenic-vacuum transfer from the preparation into a state-of-the-art atom probe. Our study points to the critical role of the preparation, i.e. the possible saturation of H-trapping sites during electrochemical polishing, how these can be alleviated by the use of an outgassing treatment, cryogenic preparation and transfer prior to charging. Accommodation of large amounts of H in the under-stoichiometric carbide likely explains the resistance of pearlite against hydrogen embrittlement.

Transmission electron microscopy has undergone a revolution in recent years with the possibility to perform routine cryo-imaging of biological materials and (bio)chemical systems, as well as the possibility to image liquids via dedicated reaction cells or graphene-sandwiching. These approaches however typically require imaging a large number of specimens and reconstructing an average representation and often lack analytical capabilities. Here, using atom probe tomography we provide atom-by-atom analyses of frozen liquids and analytical sub-nanometre three dimensional reconstructions. The analyzed ice is in contact with, and embedded within, nanoporous gold (NPG). We report the first such data on 2-3 microns thick layers of ice formed from both high purity deuterated water and a solution of 50mM NaCl in high purity deuterated water. We present a specimen preparation strategy that uses a NPG film and, additionally, we report on an analysis of the interface between nanoporous gold and frozen salt water solution with an apparent trend in the Na and Cl concentrations across the interface. We explore a range of experimental parameters to show that the atom probe analyses of bulk aqueous specimens come with their own special challenges and discuss physical processes that may produce the observed phenomena. Our study demonstrates the viability of using frozen water as a carrier for near-atomic scale analysis of objects in solution by atom probe tomography.

Directly imaging all atoms constituting a material and, maybe more importantly, crystalline defects that dictate materials' properties, remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a new approach to chemistry-sensitive field-ion microscopy (FIM) combining contrast interpretation from density-functional theory (DFT) and elemental identification enabled by time-of-flight mass-spectrometry and data mining. Analytical-FIM has true atomic resolution and we demonstrate how the technique can reveal the presence of individual solute atoms at specific positions in the microstructure. The performance of this new technique is showcased in revealing individual Re atoms at crystalline defects formed in Ni during creep deformation. The atomistic details offered by A-FIM allowed us to directly compare our results with simulations, and to tackle a long-standing question of how Re extends lifetime of Ni-based superalloys in service at high-temperature.

Ingress of hydrogen is often linked to catastrophic failure of Ti-alloys. Here, we quantify the hydrogen distribution in fully \b{eta} and {\alpha}+\b{eta} Ti-Mo alloys by using atom probe tomography. Hydrogen does not segregate at grain boundaries in the fully \b{eta} sample but segregates at some {\alpha}/\b{eta} phase boundaries with a composition exceeding 20 at.% in the {\alpha}+\b{eta} sample. No stable hydrides were observed in either sample. The hydrogen concentration in \b{eta} phases linearly decreases from ~13 at. % to ~4 at. % with increasing Mo-content, which is ascribed to the suppression of hydrogen uptake by Mo addition.

Analysis and understanding of the role of hydrogen in metals is a significant challenge for the future of materials science, and this is a clear objective of recent work in the atom probe tomography (APT) community. Isotopic marking by deuteration has often been proposed as the preferred route to enable quantification of hydrogen by APT. Zircaloy-4 was charged electrochemically with hydrogen and deuterium under the same conditions to form large hydrides and deuterides. Our results from a Zr hydride and a Zr deuteride highlight challenges associated to accurate quantification of hydrogen and deuterium, in particular associated to the overlap of peaks at low mass-to-charge ratio and of hydrogen/deuterium containing molecular ions. We discuss possible ways to ensure that appropriate information is extracted from APT analysis of hydrogen in a zirconium alloy systems that is important for nuclear power.

We present sample transfer instrumentation and integrated protocols for the preparation and correlative characterization of environmentally-sensitive materials by both atom probe tomography and electron microscopy. Ultra-high vacuum cryogenic suitcases allow specimen transfer between preparation, processing and several imaging platforms without exposure to atmospheric contamination. For expedient transfers, we installed a fast-docking station equipped with a cryogenic pump upon three systems; two atom probes, a scanning electron microscope / Xe-plasma focused ion beam and a N$_2$-atmosphere glovebox. We also installed a plasma FIB with a solid-state cooling stage to reduce beam damage and contamination, through reducing chemical activity and with the cryogenic components as passive cryogenic traps. We demonstrate the efficacy of the new laboratory protocols by the successful preparation and transfer of two highly contamination- and temperature-sensitive samples - water and ice. Analysing pure magnesium atom probe data, we show that surface oxidation can be effectively suppressed using an entirely cryogenic protocol (during specimen preparation and during transfer). Starting with the cryogenically-cooled plasma FIB, we also prepared and transferred frozen ice samples while avoiding significant melting or sublimation, suggesting that we may be able to measure the nanostructure of other normally-liquid or soft materials. Ti has a high affinity for hydrogen and is a typical hydride formers. Ti-hydride are brittle phases which probably cause premature failure of Ti-alloys. Here, we used atom probe tomography and electron microscopy to investigate the hydrogen distribution in a set of specimens of commercially pure Ti, model and commercial Ti-alloys. Although likely partly introduced during specimen preparation with the focused-ion beam, we show formation of Ti-hydrides along {\alpha} grain boundaries and {\alpha}/\b{eta} phase boundaries in commercial pure Ti and {\alpha}+\b{eta} binary model alloys. No hydrides are observed in the {\alpha} phase in alloys with Al addition or quenched-in Mo supersaturation., Comment: Published in Acta Materialia in 2018

The application of wide field-of-view detection systems to atom probe experiments emphasizes the importance of careful parameter selection in the tomographic reconstruction of the analysed volume, as the sensitivity to errors rises steeply with increases in analysis dimensions. In this paper, a self-consistent method is presented for the systematic determination of the main reconstruction parameters. In the proposed approach, the compression factor and the field factor are determined using geometrical projections from the desorption images. A 3D Fourier transform is then applied to a series of reconstructions and, comparing to the known material crystallography, the efficiency of the detector is estimated. The final results demonstrate a significant improvement in the accuracy of the reconstructed volumes.

This article addresses gaps in definitions and a lack of standard measurement techniques to assess the spatial resolution in atom probe tomography. This resolution is known to be anisotropic, being better in the depth than laterally. Generally the presence of atomic planes in the tomographic reconstruction is considered as being a sufficient proof of the quality of the spatial resolution of the instrument. Based on advanced spatial distribution maps, an analysis methodology that interrogates the local neighborhood of the atoms within the tomographic reconstruction, it is shown how both the in-depth and the lateral resolution can be quantified. The influences of the crystallography and the temperature are investigated, and models are proposed to explain the observed results. We demonstrate that the absolute value of resolution is specimenspecific.

Progress in the reconstruction for atom probe tomography has been limited since the first implementation of the protocol proposed by Bas et al. in 1995. This approach, and those subsequently developed, assume that the geometric parameters used to build the three-dimensional atom map are constant over the course of an analysis. Here, we test this assumption within the analyses of low-alloyed materials. By building upon methods recently proposed to measure the tomographic reconstruction parameters, we demonstrate that this assumption can introduce significant limitations in the accuracy of the analysis. Moreover, we propose a strategy to alleviate this problem through the implementation of a new reconstruction algorithm that dynamically accommodates variations in the tomographic reconstruction parameters., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

We analyze the quantum walk in higher spatial dimensions and compare classical and quantum spreading as a function of time. Tensor products of Hadamard transformations and the discrete Fourier transform arise as natural extensions of the quantum coin toss in the one-dimensional walk simulation, and other illustrative transformations are also investigated. We find that entanglement between the dimensions serves to reduce the rate of spread of the quantum walk.
