Abstract

Abstract The DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has reported the observation of an annual modulation in the event rate that has been attributed to dark matter interactions over the last two decades. However, even though tremendous efforts to detect similar dark matter interactions were pursued, no definitive evidence has been observed to corroborate the DAMA/LIBRA signal. Many studies assuming various dark matter models have attempted to reconcile DAMA/LIBRA’s modulation signals and null results from other experiments, however no clear conclusion can be drawn. Apart from the dark matter hypothesis, several studies have examined the possibility that the modulation is induced by variations in detector’s environment or their specific analysis methods. In particular, a recent study presents a possible cause of the annual modulation from an analysis method adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment in which the observed annual modulation could be reproduced by a slowly varying time-dependent background. Here, we study the COSINE-100 data using an analysis method similar to the one adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment and observe a significant annual modulation, however the modulation phase is almost opposite to that of the DAMA/LIBRA data. Assuming the same background composition for COSINE-100 and DAMA/LIBRA, simulated experiments for the DAMA/LIBRA without dark matter signals also provide significant annual modulation with an amplitude similar to DAMA/LIBRA with opposite phase. Even though this observation does not directly explain the DAMA/LIBRA results directly, this interesting phenomenon motivates more profound studies of the time-dependent DAMA/LIBRA background data.

Initial performance of the UltraLo-1800 alpha particle detector at the 700 m deep Yangyang underground laboratory in Korea is described. The ionization detector uses Argon as a counting gas for measuring alpha events of a sample. We present initial calibration results and low-activity sample measurements based on the detector's pulse discrimination method and a hardware veto. Abstract

Description, Dark matter interpretations of the DAMA signals are excluded by COSINE-100 with the same NaI(Tl) target for various models., We present new constraints on dark matter interactions using 1.7 years of COSINE-100 data. The COSINE-100 experiment, consisting of 106 kg of tallium-doped sodium iodide [NaI(Tl)] target material, is aimed to test DAMA’s claim of dark matter observation using the same NaI(Tl) detectors. Improved event selection requirements, a more precise understanding of the detector background, and the use of a larger dataset considerably enhance the COSINE-100 sensitivity for dark matter detection. No signal consistent with the dark matter interaction is identified and rules out model-dependent dark matter interpretations of the DAMA signals in the specific context of standard halo model with the same NaI(Tl) target for various interaction hypotheses.

Abstract

We present results from a search for solar axions with the COSINE-100 experiment. We find no evidence of solar axion events from a data-set of 6,303.9 kg$\cdot$days exposure and set a 90\,\% confidence level upper limit on the axion-electron coupling, $g_{ae}$, at 1.70~$\times$~$10^{-11}$ for an axion mass less than 1\,keV/c$^2$. This limit excludes QCD axions heavier than 0.59\,eV/c$^2$ in the DFSZ model and 168.1\,eV/c$^2$ in the KSVZ model., 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

There is a long standing debate about whether or not the annual modulation signal reported by the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration is induced by Weakly Interacting Massive Particles~(WIMP) in the galaxy's dark matter halo scattering from nuclides in their NaI(Tl) crystal target/detector. This is because regions of WIMP-mass vs. WIMP-nucleon cross-section parameter space that can accommodate the DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 modulation signal in the context of the standard WIMP dark matter galactic halo and isospin-conserving~(canonical), spin-independent~(SI) WIMP-nucleon interactions have been excluded by many of other dark matter search experiments including COSINE-100, which uses the same NaI(Tl) target/detector material. Moreover, the recently released DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 results are inconsistent with an interpretation as WIMP-nuclide scattering via the canonical SI interaction and prefer, instead, isospin-violating or spin-dependent interactions. Dark matter interpretations of the DAMA/LIBRA signal are sensitive to the NaI(Tl) scintillation efficiency for nuclear recoils, which is characterized by so-called quenching factors~(QF), and the QF values used in previous studies differ significantly from recently reported measurements, which may have led to incorrect interpretations of the DAMA/LIBRA signal. In this article, the compatibility of the DAMA/LIBRA and COSINE-100 results, in light of the new QF measurements is examined for different possible types of WIMP-nucleon interactions. The resulting allowed parameter space regions associated with the DAMA/LIBRA signal are explicitly compared with 90\% confidence level upper limits from the initial 59.5~day COSINE-100 exposure. Abstract

Observations of galaxies and primordial radiation suggest that the Universe is made mostly of non-luminous dark matter. Several types of new fundamental particles have been proposed as candidates for dark matter such as weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) but no definitive signal has been seen despite concerted efforts by many collaborations. One exception is the much-debated claim by the DAMA collaboration of a statistically significant annual modulation in the event rate of their experiment with a period and phase consistent with that expected from WIMP dark matter. Several groups have been working to develop experiments with the aim of reproducing DAMA's results using the same target medium. Here we report results from the initial operation of the COSINE-100 experiment. COSINE-100 uses sodium iodide as the target medium-the same medium as DAMA-and is designed to carry out a model-independent test of DAMA's claim. Initial data based on the first 59.5 days indicate that there is no excess of events over the expected background, confirming that DAMA's annual modulation signal is in severe tension with results from other experiments under the assumption of dark matter having spin independent interactions and the Standard Halo Model. Abstract

Assuming a standard Maxwellian for the WIMP velocity distribution, we obtain the bounds from null WIMP search results of 59.5 days of COSINE-100 data on the DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 modulation effect within the context of the non-relativistic effective theory of WIMP-nucleus scattering. Here, we systematically assume that one of the effective operators allowed by Galilean invariance dominates in the effective Hamiltonian of a spin-1/2 dark matter (DM) particle. We find that, although DAMA/LIBRA and COSINE-100 use the same sodium-iodide target, the comparison of the two results still depends on the particle-physics model. This is mainly due to two reasons: i) the WIMP signal spectral shape; ii) the expected modulation fractions, when the upper bound on the time-averaged rate in COSINE-100 is converted into a constraint on the annual modulation component in DAMA/LIBRA. We find that the latter effect is the dominant one. For several effective operators the expected modulation fractions are larger than in the standard spin-independent or spin-dependent interaction cases. As a consequence, compatibility between the modulation effect observed in DAMA/LIBRA and the null result from COSINE-100 is still possible for several non-relativistic operators. At low WIMP masses such relatively high values of the modulation fractions arise because COSINE-100 is mainly sensitive to WIMP-sodium scattering events, due to the higher threshold compared to DAMA/LIBRA. Abstract

NaI(Tl) crystals are used as particle detectors in a variety of rare-event search experiments because of their superb light-emission quality. The crystal light yield is generally high, above 10 photoelectrons per keV, and its emission spectrum is peaked around 400 nm, which matches well to the sensitive region of bialkali photocathode photomultiplier tubes. However, since NaI(Tl) crystals are hygroscopic, a sophisticated method of encapsulation has to be applied that prevents moisture from chemically attacking the crystal and thereby degrading the emission. In addition, operation with low energy thresholds, which is essential for a number of new phenomenon searches, is usually limited by the crystal light yield; in these cases higher light yields can translate into lower thresholds that improve the experimental sensitivity. Here we describe the development of an encapsulation technique that simplifies the overall design by attaching the photo sensors directly to the crystal so that light losses are minimized. The light yield of a NaI(Tl) crystal encapsulated with this technique was improved by more than 30%, and as many as 22 photoelectrons per keV have been measured. Consequently, the energy threshold can be lowered and the energy resolution improved. Detectors with this higher light yield are sensitive to events with sub-keV energies and well suited for low-mass dark matter particle searches and measurements of neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering.

Abstract

A search for inelastic boosted dark matter (iBDM) using the COSINE-100 detector with 59.5 days of data is presented. This relativistic dark matter is theorized to interact with the target material through inelastic scattering with electrons, creating a heavier state that subsequently produces standard model particles, such as an electron-positron pair. In this study, we search for this electron-positron pair in coincidence with the initially scattered electron as a signature for an iBDM interaction. No excess over the predicted background event rate is observed. Therefore, we present limits on iBDM interactions under various hypotheses, one of which allows us to explore an area of the experimental search for iBDM using a terrestrial detector., 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The COSINE-100 dark matter search experiment is an array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors located in the Yangyang Underground Laboratory (Y2L). To understand measured backgrounds in the NaI(Tl) crystals we have performed Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit and developed background models for each crystal that consider contributions from both internal and external sources, including cosmogenic nuclides. The background models are based on comparisons of measurement data with Monte Carlo simulations that are guided by a campaign of material assays and are used to evaluate backgrounds and identify their sources. The average background level for the six crystals (70 kg total mass) that are studied is 3.5 counts/day/keV/kg in the (2–6) keV energy interval. Abstract

COSINE is a dark matter search experiment based on an array of low background NaI(Tl) crystals located at the Yangyang underground laboratory. The assembly of COSINE-100 was completed in the summer of 2016 and the detector is currently collecting physics quality data aimed at reproducing the DAMA/LIBRA experiment that reported an annual modulation signal. Stable operation has been achieved and will continue for at least 2 years. Abstract

A monitoring system for fast neutrons is planned in the COSINE experiment, a dark matter experiment with NaI crystals. We pursued several R&D approaches for a neutron detector using a liquid scintillator (LS). A pulse shape discrimination (PSD) technique is used for the identification of neutron events and the PSD properties of two different LS were compared. A good separation power between neutrons and $\gamma$ has been achieved for energies between 200 keVee to 1500 keVee. The combination of alumina adsorption, filtration, and water extraction is effective in purifying the LS, which leads to a reduction in the $\alpha$ contamination by $^{210}$Po of more than a factor of two. The measured activities of the internal $\alpha$ are 0.36$\pm$0.04~mBq/kg and 0.21$\pm$0.03~mBq/kg before and after purification, respectively.

Abstract

Belle and BaBar have recently reported observations of meson states that decay to final states containing a c and [Formula: see text]-quark but with properties that do not match well to those expected for any of the as-yet unassigned charmonium [Formula: see text] meson states. Among the suggested interpretations for these states are meson-antimeson molecular states, diquark-antidiquark tetraquarks and/or [Formula: see text]-gluon hybrid mesona. I briefly review what is experimentally known about these states and comment on the status of recent attempts to classify them.

Abstract

A measurement of the CP violation parameter sin 2ϕ1 based on a 29.1 fb-1 data sample recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+ e- collider is reported. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed as a J/ψKS, ψ(2S)KS, χc1KS, ηcKS, J/ψKL or J/ψK*0 decay and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we determine sin 2ϕ1 = 0.99±0.14(stat) ±0.06(sys). Since this value is more than 6σ from zero, we can conclude that CP symmetry is violated in the neutral B meson system.

A sample of 3.79 million psi(2S) decays observed in the BES detector is used to study the decays of charmonium to axialvector plus pseudoscalar mesons. The branching fraction for psi(2S) to b1pi agrees with expectations. A contrasting behavior between the psi(2S) and the J/psi decays to K1K cannot be accommodated by an adjustment of the singlet-triplet axialvector mixing angle., 7 pages, 3 figures. We determine upper limits on branching fractions for ψ(2S) decays into ωf2, ρa2, K*0K*02 + c.c., and φf'2(1525) that are, in each case, significantly smaller than the corresponding branching fractions for the J/ψ meson, scaled according to the expectations of perturbative QCD. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present the results of a study of e + e − μ + μ − final states produced in e + e − collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV using the AMY detector at TRISTAN. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 292.8 pb −1 . The results show good agreement with order α 4 QED predictions.

We determine the total width of the χc0 to be γtotχc0 = 14.3 ± 2.0 ± 3.0 MeV. We present the first measurement of the branching fraction B(χc0 → pp¯) = (15.9 ± 4.3 ± 5.3) × 10−5, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. Branching fractions of χc0, 2 → π+ π− and K+ K− are also reported. © 1998 American Physical Society.

Abstract

A search is performed for the production of the ψ(2S) in e^+e^- annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV using the BES detector operated at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC). The kinematic features of the reconstructed ψ(2S) signal are consistent with its being produced only in association with an energetic photon resulting from initial state radiation (ISR). Limits are placed on ψ(2S) production from the decay of unknown charmonia or metastable hybrids that might be produced in e^+e^- annihilations at 4.03 GeV. Under the assumption that the observed cross section for ψ(2S) production is due entirely to ISR, the partial width Γ_(ee) of the ψ(2S) is measured to be 2.07±0.32keV.

Abstract

Recent results of experimental studies of hadronic decays of charmonium states using the BES detector are reported. A number of puzzling features are observed. Foremost among these is the large discrepancy between the decay rates for J/ψ and ψ(2S) decays to ρπ and [Formula: see text] final states, first observed by the Mark II experiment. We find suppressions for ψ(2S) decays to these modes of factors in excess of sixty and twenty, respectively. Similar, although less dramatic, suppressions of vector plus tensor meson final states are also observed. No suppression is seen for axialvector plus pseudoscalar meson decays, but a strong flavor-SU(3) violation is seen in [Formula: see text] final states that has an opposite character for the J/ψ and ψ(2S).

Abstract

The innermost layer of the Belle silicon vertex detector operates 1.5 cm away from the collision point of the highest luminosity collider in the world. Occupancy in this innermost layer is already 10% and expected to continue increasing with the planned significant luminosity increases. A pair of prototype detectors has been developed to address this problem, based upon the same CMOS camera technology now widely deployed in low-cost consumer devices such as cellular telephones. Problems unique to operating in a high luminosity B-factory environment are discussed. Results from a number of tests are presented, demonstrating the viability of this detector technology.

Abstract

The forward-backward asymmetry in e(+)e(-) --> b (b) over bar at root s = 57.9 GeV and the b-quark branching ratio to muons have been measured using neural networks. Unlike previous methods for measuring the b (b) over bar forward-backward asymmetry where the estimated background from c-quark decays and other sources are subtracted, here events are categorized as either b (b) over bar or non-b (b) over bar events by neural networks based on event-by-event characteristics. The determined asymmetry is -0.429 +/- 0.044(stat) +/- 0.047(sys) and is consistent with the prediction of the standard model. The measured B (B) over bar mixing parameter is 0.136 +/- 0.037(stat) +/- 0.040(sys) +/- 0.002(model) and the measured b-quark branching ratio to muons is 0.122 +/- 0.006(stat) +/- 0.007(sys).

Abstract

Several prototypes of a Cherenkov Correlated Timing (CCT) Detector have been tested at the KEK-PS test beam line. We describe the results for Cherenkov light yields and timing characteristics from quartz and acrylic bar prototypes. Abstract

A study of e + e − annihilations into final states containing a single energetic photon with no accompanying particles is made at a center of mass energy of 57.8 GeV. The measured cross section is consistent with expectations from standard model processes and is used to set limits on the masses of the scalar electron and photino particles predicted by supersymmetry theories. If the photino is assumed to be massless, the 90% confidence level lower limit on the mass of the degenerate scalar electron is 65.5 GeV. If the results of all the single photon experiments are combined, this lower limit increases to 79.3 GeV.

Abstract

We have measured the azimuthal correlation of hadrons produced in e(+)e(-) annihilations at root s=58 GeV. In perturbative QCD these correlations are sensitive to the interference between soft gluons emitted at large angles with respect to the event axis. However, Monte Carlo calculations incorporating QCD-inspired hadronization models in which the correlation of interjet particles is treated in a phenomenological manner describe the data well. We also observe that angular ordering of the parton showering in the LUND Monte Carlo program improves the agreement with the data.

Abstract

Measurements of open charm production in photon-photon collisions made with the AMY detector at TRISTAN are reported. Charmed hadrons were identified by detecting the high momentum muons or electrons from their semileptonic decays. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 275 pb −1 at an average center of mass energy of 58 GeV. Results are presented in the form of cross sections of inclusive leptons from charm for both muons and electrons. The measured cross section is 1.8 standard deviations higher than theoretical predictions based on the direct and photon-gluon fusion process, where the mass of charm quark is assumed to be 1.6 GeV.

Abstract

Using e+e− annihilation events accumulated with the AMY detector at the TRISTAN collider, we have studied the Bose-Einstein correlations in the distributions of like-sign charged tracks. As reference samples we used the opposite-sign charged track pairs and mixed pairs, which are like-sign pairs synthesized from tracks belonging to different events. The results of the different reference samples give approximately 0.45 for the correlation strength and approximately 0.65 fm for the source size. Previous measurements of these parameters in e+e− annihilation at energies from CESR to LEP show remarkably flat dependence on s . Our results conform well with this picture.

Abstract

We present a study of differential two jet ratios in multi-hadronic final states produced by e(+)e(-) annihilation in the AMY detector at TRISTAN. The data are compared to the predictions of the next-to-leading logarithm parton-shower (NLL PS) Monte Carlo and the O(alpha(s)(2)) matrix element QCD models. We determine the strong coupling strength alpha(s)(57.3 GeV) = 0.130 +/- 0.006.

Abstract

The photon structure function F 2 γ has been measured at average Q 2 values of 73 and 390 GeV 2 using data collected by the AMY detector at the TRISTAN e + e − collider. F 2 γ is observed to be increasing as ln Q 2 . The x -dependence of F 2 γ , where x is the momentum fraction carried by the parton inside the photon, is also measured. The measurements are compared with several parton density models.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the angle phi(3) of the unitarity triangle using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B-+/- -> DK +/-, D -> K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-) ecays. The method uses, as input, measurements of the strong phase of the D -> K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-) amplitude from the CLEO Collaboration. The result is based on the full data set of 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected by the Belle experiment at the Gamma(4S) resonance. We obtain phi(3) = (77.3(-14.9)(+15.1) +/- 4.1 +/- 4.3)degrees and the suppressed amplitude ratio r(B) = 0.145 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.010 +/- 0.011. Here the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third is the error due to the precision of the strong-phase parameters obtained by CLEO.

Abstract

Using 773 muons found in hadronic events from 142 pb-1 of data at a c.m. energy of 57.8 GeV, we extract the cross section and forward-backward charge asymmetry for the e+e- --> bbBAR process, and the heavy quark fragmentation function parameters for the Peterson model. For the analysis of the e+e- --> bbBAR process, we use a method in which the behavior of the c quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that of the b quark left indeterminate. The cross section and asymmetry for e+e- --> bbBAR are found to be R(b) = 0.57 +/- 0.06(stat) +/- 0.08(syst) and A(b) = -0.59 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.09, respectively. They are consistent with the standard model predictions. For the study of the fragmentation function we use the variable [x(e)], the fraction of the beam energy carried by the heavy hadrons. We obtain [x(E)]c = 0.56(-0.05-0.03)+0.04+0.03 and [x(E)]b = 0.65(-0.04-0.06)+0.06+0.05, respectively. These are in good agreement with previously measured values.

Abstract

We report on a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e+e- --> qqBAR at KEK TRISTAN, where. the asymmetry is near maximum. We sum over all flavors and measure the asymmetry by determining the charge of the quark jets. In addition we exploit flavor dependencies in the jet charge determination to enhance the contributions of certain flavors. This provides a check on the asymmetries of individual flavors. The measurement agrees with the standard model expectations.

Recent results on the so‐called XYZ states are presented, including: a near‐threshold ωJ/ψ mass peak seen by Belle in the two‐photon process γγ→ωJ/ψ; evidence from CDF for a φJ/ψ mass peak in B−φJ/ψ decays; a Belle search for D*Dπ decays of the 1−−Y states; and a Dalitz‐plot analysis of B→Kπ±ψ′ decays by Belle that confirms their original claim for the Z(4430)+→π±ψ.

Abstract

We observe a narrow enhancement near 2m(p) in the invariant mass spectrum of pp pairs from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays. No similar structure is seen in J/psi-->pi(0)pp decays. The results are based on an analysis of a 58 x 10(6) event sample of J/psi decays accumulated with the BESII detector at the Beijing electron-positron collider. The enhancement can be fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function. In the case of the S-wave fit, the peak mass is below 2m(p) at M=1859(+3)(-10) (stat)+5-25(syst) MeV/c(2) and the total width is Gamma

We have developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation program for the Belle TOF system. Based on GEANT simulation, it takes account of all physics processes in the TOF scintillation counters and readout electronics. The simulation reproduces very well the performance of the Belle TOF system, including the dE/dx response, the time walk effect, the time resolution, and the hit efficiency due to beam background. Abstract

We report values of $R\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{hadrons})/\ensuremath{\sigma}({e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ for 85 center-of-mass energies between 2 and $5\mathrm{GeV}$ measured with the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Abstract

Hadronic decays of the P-wave spin-triplet charmonium states \chi_cJ (J=0,1,2) are studied using a sample of \psi(2S) decays collected by the BES detector operating at the BEPC storage ring. Branching fractions for the decays \chi_c1 going to K_s^0 K^+ \pi^- + c.c., \chi_c0 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c2 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c0 going to \phi \phi, \chi_c2 going to \phi \phi and \chi_cJ going to K^+ K^- K^+ K^- are measured for the first time, and those for \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^-, $ \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- K^+ K^-, \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- p \bar{p} and \chi_cJ going to 3(\pi^+ \pi^-) are measured with improved precision. In addition, we determine the masses of the \chi_c0 and \eta_c to be M_{\chi_{c0}}=3414.1 \pm 0.6(stat) \pm 0.8 (sys) MeV and M_{\eta_c}=2975.8 \pm 3.9(stat) \pm 1.2 (sys) MeV., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, use revtex, submitted to Phys. Abstract

The electrical properties associated with carrier mobility, μ, and lifetime, τ, have been investigated for the chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond films using charged particle-induced conductivity and time resolved transient photo-induced conductivity. The collection distance, d, the average distance which electron and hole depart when driven by an applied electric field E, was measured by both methods. The collection distance is related to the carrier mobility and lifetime by d = μEτ Our measurements show that the collection distance increases linearly with sample thickness for CVD diamond films. The collection distance at the growth side of the CVD diamond film is comparable to that of single crystal natural type IIa diamond; at the substrate side of the film, the collection distance is near zero. No saturation of the collection distance is observed for film thickness up to 500 microns.
