Rock glaciers are geomorphologically valuable indicators of permafrost distribution and form potentially important hydrological resources in the context of future climate change. Despite the widespread distribution of permafrost on the Tibetan Plateau and its reputation as the "water tower of Asia", this region lacks a complete inventory and systematic investigation of rock glaciers. In this study, we develop a deep-learning-based approach for mapping rock glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau. A powerful deep learning network, DeepLabv3+, is trained using Planet Basemaps as training imagery and multi-source rock glacier inventories as training labels. The well-trained model is then used to map new rock glaciers. The visually consistent and cloud-free properties of Planet Basemaps are crucial for developing comprehensive maps of rock glacier distribution; and the rock glacier inventories from multiple regions can improve the volume and diversity of the training dataset. The deep learning mapped results present strong identification and acceptable boundary delineation of rock glaciers, indicating that the deep learning model could serve as a useful tool for facilitating the inventory of rock glaciers over vast regions. Based on the deep learning outputs, we compile 4233 rock glaciers on eight subregions of the Tibetan Plateau, which are widespread in the surrounding regions while being scarcely distributed in inner areas. Talus- and glacier-connected rock glaciers are two major classes, which are dominant on the southeastern and densely distributed on the northwestern Tibetan Plateau, respectively. The regions with steep slopes are favored by rock glacier clusters with high density, and glacier-abundant regions tend to breed large rock glaciers. The proposed rock glacier mapping method effectively speeds up inventorying efforts, which will be used to map and inventory rock glaciers on the entire Tibetan Plateau. The complete inventory will offer a significant contribution to the global catalog and serves as a benchmark dataset for modeling and monitoring the state of permafrost in a changing climate.

In this paper we implement a degree day snowmelt and glacier melt model in the Dynamic fluxEs and ConnectIvity for Predictions of HydRology (DECIPHeR) model. The purpose is to develop a hydrological model that can be applied to large glaciated and snow-fed catchments yet is computationally efficient enough to include model uncertainty in streamflow predictions. The model is evaluated by simulating monthly discharge at six gauging stations in the Naryn River catchment (57 833 km2) in central Asia over the period 1951 to a variable end date between 1980 and 1995 depending on the availability of discharge observations. The spatial distribution of simulated snow cover is validated against MODIS weekly snow extent for the years 2001–2007. Discharge is calibrated by selecting parameter sets using Latin hypercube sampling and assessing the model performance using six evaluation metrics. The model shows good performance in simulating monthly discharge for the calibration period (NSE is 0.74

Solifluction sheets are large-scale and extensive valley-floor and valley-side landforms developed widely in the British Isles from mass-wasting of glacial and periglacial sediments during late-glacial times. We describe their geographical distribution and review the processes that have led to their development. We use data from the Cheviot Hills, the one site in the British Isles where sedimentology and optically stimulated luminescence dating have been combined, to assess their age and nature of deposition. We also present data from central Wales where a new mapping and resistivity survey has reconstructed the nature of valley-side solifluction sheets. We explore the relative lack of recent research on these landforms and argue that solifluction sheets represent a clear example of how upland geomorphological systems have responded to late-glacial climate change. We end by identifying a number of areas where research on these enigmatic features could be focussed, including better understanding of their distribution, sedimentology and age.

Deglaciation of mountain ranges promotes landslides of various scales and types, and many of them may present a major hazard. It is commonly thought that the main concentration of landslides is located in parts of the mountain ranges that have pronounced topography, high amount of precipitation and strong tectonic activity. Based on our mapping of large landslides (>1km2) over an extensively large area of Southern Patagonia (~305,000 km²), we show that the distribution of landslides can have the opposite character. The largest landslides within the limits of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) are concentrated along its eastern margins and thus occupying lower, tectonically less active, and arid part of the Patagonian Andes. In contrast to the heavily glaciated, highest elevations of the mountain range, the peripheral regions have been glaciated only episodically. However, a combination of glaciation, weak volcanic and sedimentary rocks, sufficient relief, and presence of large glacial lakes in the past, created favourable conditions for formation of huge number of large landslides along eastern margin of PIS. We explain the scarcity of large landslides in the highest parts of the PIS by presence of strong granitic rocks and long-term glacial modification, that adjusted topography for efficient ice discharge. Our model is limited to large bedrock landslides as shallow slides and rock falls are abundant in the highest and western part of the Andes.

High Mountain Asia (HMA) – the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding high Asian mountains – is now experiencing amplified climate change, glacier melt, and permafrost thaw. The rapid climate change and melting and thawing of the cryosphere are not only affecting the water cycle but also causing landscape instability and mountain hazards, potentially threatening over 2 billion people in the downstream river basins. Glacier retreat and permafrost thaw are accelerating associated with frequent rockfalls, landslides, and debris flows. Lake outburst floods from (pro)glacial- and landslide-dammed lakes have potential runout distances of hundreds of kilometers. Moreover, greater amounts of sediment are mobilized, and fluvial sediment fluxes are increasing. Such mountain landscape instability can be largely attributed to climate change and is threatening infrastructure and livelihoods. We suggest that policymakers and stakeholders in the Himalaya countries must be urgently and fundamentally aware of these increasing threats in a changing climate. Adaptation measures should be based on extensive and continual monitoring of the glaciers, permafrost, unstable paraglacial landscapes, and sediment transport, to better understand compound and cascading hazards.

Debris-covered glaciers in the Manaslu region of Nepal have been scarcely studied. Here we aim to fill this gap using new, multi-sensor, freely available 2019 Planet high-resolution (3 to 5 m) imagery, 1970 Corona declassified imagery and UAV and stake ablation data acquired in the field to characterize the surface and evolution of these glaciers over the last five decades. We report regional area changes, glacier thickness, geodetic glacier mass balance and surface velocity changes and focus on Ponkar Glacier and Thulagi Glacier and Lake for an in-depth assessment of surface geomorphology and surface feature dynamics (ponds, vegetation and ice cliffs).Glaciers in the Manaslu region experienced a mean area loss of -0.26 ± 0.0001 % a-1 between 1970 and 2019, with a mean surface lowering of -0.20 ± 0.02 ma-1 over the period 1970 to 2013, corresponding to a regional geodetic mass balance of -0.17 ± 0.03 m w.e.a−1. Overall, debris-covered glaciers had higher thinning rates compared to clean ice glaciers. During the period 1970 to 2013, the debris-covered Ponkar Glacier had a geodetic mass balance of -0.06 ± 0.01 m w.e.a−1, with parts of the central trunk thickening and a nine-fold increase in the thinning rates over the lower parts of the glacier tongue in the recent years (2013 to 2019). Ice-surface morphology changes between 1970 and 2019 include a decrease in ogives and open crevasses, an increase in ice cliffs and ponds and the expansion of the supraglacial debris and ice-surface vegetation, suggesting reduced ice-dynamic activity.

Climate change is projected to have important impacts on snow and vegetation distribution in global mountains. Despite this, the coupling of ecological shifts and hydrological processes within alpine zones has not attracted significant scientific attention. As the largest and one of the most climatically sensitive mountain systems, we argue that Himalayan alpine ecohydrological processes require urgent scientific attention because up to 1.6 billion people rely on water supplies from the mountains. We review studies from global mountain systems to highlight the importance of considering ecohydrological impacts within Himalayan alpine zones (4100–6000 m.a.s.l), explaining mechanisms for interactions between snow and dwarf plants. Our findings highlight the paucity of monitoring stations within Himalayan alpine systems. We suggest that it is likely that alpine ecological shifts will impact hydrological processes, but we found that specific mechanisms and functional relationships are missing for Himalayan systems, so the strength and direction of ecohydrological relationships is currently unknown. We advocate for more purposeful and widespread monitoring efforts below glaciers and above the treeline, calling for new experiments to query the role of small plants within the Himalayan alpine hydrological system. We outline the need for community engagement with alpine ecohydrological experiments, and we explain how new snow and vegetation products derived from remote sensing observations have the potential to improve scientific understanding of the interacting effects of warming and ecohydrological factors in this sensitive region.

Glacial lakes are rapidly growing in response to climate change and glacier retreat. The role of these lakes as terrestrial storage for glacial meltwater is currently unknown and not accounted for in global sea level assessments. Here, we map glacier lakes around the world using 254,795 satellite images and use scaling relations to estimate that global glacier lake volume increased by around 48%, to 156.5 km3, between 1990 and 2018. This methodology provides a near-global database and analysis of glacial lake extent, volume and change. Over the study period, lake numbers and total area increased by 53 and 51%, respectively. Median lake size has increased 3%; however, the 95th percentile has increased by around 9%. Currently, glacial lakes hold about 0.43 mm of sea level equivalent. As glaciers continue to retreat and feed glacial lakes, the implications for glacial lake outburst floods and water resources are of considerable societal and ecological importance. Warming is increasing glacial lakes, and scaling relations show a 48% increase in volume for 1990 to 2018. All measures—area, volume, number—increased, providing water storage but also representing a potential hazard with the risk of outburst floods.

Glaciers respond sensitively to climate variability and change, with associated impacts on meltwater production, sea-level rise and geomorphological hazards. There is a strong societal interest to understand the current response of all types of glacier systems to climate change and how they will continue to evolve in the context of the whole glacierized landscape. In particular, understanding the current and future behaviour of debris-covered glaciers is a ‘hot topic’ in glaciological research because of concerns for eater resources and glacier-related hazards. The state of these glaciers is closely related to various hazardous geomorphological processes which are relatively poorly understood. Understanding the implications of debris-covered glacier evolution requires a systems approach. This includes the interplay of various factors such as local geomorphology, ice ablation patterns, debris characteristics, glacier lake growth and development. Such a broader, contextualized understanding is prerequisite to identifying and monitoring the geohazards and hydrologic implications associated with changes in the debris-covered glacier system under future climate scenarios. This paper presents a comprehensive review of current knowledge of the debris-covered glacier landsystem. Specifically, we review state-of-the-art field and remote sensing-based methods for monitoring debris-covered glacier characteristics and lakes and their evolution under future climate change. We advocate a holistic process-based framework for assessing hazards associated with moraine-dammed glacio-terminal lakes that are a projected end-member state for many debris-covered glaciers under a warming climate.

Assessing the extent to which glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are increasing in frequency in modern times and whether their incidence is driven by anthropogenic climate change requires historical context. However, progress on this issue is hampered by incomplete GLOF inventories, especially in remote mountain regions. Here, we exploit high-resolution, multi-temporal satellite and aerial imagery, and documentary data to identify GLOF events across the glacierized Cordilleras of Peru and Bolivia, using a set of diagnostic geomorphic features. A total of 160 GLOFs from 151 individual sites are characterised and analysed, tripling the number of previously reported events. We provide statistics on location, magnitude, timing and characteristics of these events with implications for regional GLOF hazard identification and assessment. Furthermore, we describe several cases in detail and document a wide range of process chains associated with Andean GLOFs.

Rock glaciers contain significant amount of ground ice and serve as important freshwater resources as mountain glaciers melt in response to climate warming. However, current knowledge about ice content in rock glaciers has been acquired mainly from in situ investigations in limited study areas, which hinders a comprehensive understanding of ice storage in rock glaciers situated in remote mountains and over local or regional scales. In this study, we develop an empirical rheological model to infer ice content of rock glaciers using readily available input data, including rock glacier planar shape, surface slope angle, active layer thickness, and surface creep rate. We apply the model to infer the ice content of five rock glaciers in Khumbu and Lhotse Valleys, north-eastern Nepal. The inferred volumetric ice fraction ranges from 57.5 % to 92 %, with an average value between 71 % to 75.3 %. The total water volume equivalent in the study area lies between 10.61 and 16.54 million m3. Considering previous mapping results and extrapolating from our findings to the entire Nepalese Himalaya, the total amount of water stored in rock glaciers ranges from 8.97 to 13.98 billion m3, equivalent to a ratio of 1 : 17 between the rock glacier and glacier reservoirs. Due to the accessibility of the input parameters of the model developed in this study, it is promising to apply the approach to permafrost regions where previous information about ice content of rock glaciers is lacking.

In this first full review of extant Quaternary Rock Slope Failure (RSF) in the British mountains, we provide a near-complete inventory of 1082 sites, 40% being rock slope deformations, 40% arrested rockslides, and 20% rock avalanches. Current RSF activity is negligible, and this relict population is predominantly paraglacial, with a parafluvial minority. Its spatial distribution is perplexing, with RSF density varying greatly, both regionally and locally. In the Scottish Highlands, eight main clusters account for 76% of RSF area in 15% of the montane area. Local concentrations occur in all the British ranges, across high and low relief, in core and peripheral locations, and on varied geological and glaciological domains; as conversely do extensive areas of sparsity, even in similar lithologies. Generic interpretations are thus precluded. Geology is only a secondary control. An association with Concentrated Erosion of Bedrock (CEB) is proposed, as a driver of intensified slope stresses. CEB is most evident at those glacial breaches of main divides where the most vigorous recent incision is inferred, and also in some trough-heads. A clear association between RSFs and these ‘late-developing’ breaches is demonstrated in the Highlands, in 42 localities, with sparsity away from them. It is also seen in seven Lake District localities. Glaciological models identify ice sheet volatility capable of driving breach ramification. High-magnitude paleoseismic events are generally unlikely to have provoked RSF clusters; a few candidates are considered. RSF has been underrated as an agent of mountain landscape evolution in Britain; its spatio-temporal incidence may assist in calibrating regional ice sheet models, and in assessing climate change impacts. We argue that the CEB:RSF association has global relevance in identifying primary drivers of mass movement in bedrock.

In mountainous regions, climate change threatens cryospheric water resources, and understanding all components of the hydrological cycle is necessary for effective water resource management. Rock glaciers are climatically more resilient than glaciers and contain potentially hydrologically valuable ice volumes, and yet have received less attention, even though rock glacier hydrological importance may increase under future climate warming. In synthesising data from a range of global studies, we provide the first comprehensive evaluation of the hydrological role played by rock glaciers. We evaluate hydrological significance over a range of temporal and spatial scales, alongside the complex multiple hydrological processes with which rock glaciers can interact diurnally, seasonally, annually, decadally and both at local and regional extents. We report that although no global-extent, complete inventory for rock glaciers exists currently, recent research efforts have greatly elaborated spatial coverage. Using these research papers, we synthesise information on rock glacier spatial distribution, morphometric characteristics, surface and subsurface features, ice-storage and hydrological flow dynamics, water chemistry, and future resilience, from which we provide the first comprehensive evaluation of their hydrological contribution. We identify and discuss long-, intermediate- and short-term timescales for rock glacier storage, allowing a more balanced assessment of the contrasting perspectives regarding the relative significance of rock glacier-derived hydrological contributions compared to other water sources. We show that further empirical observations are required to gain a deeper hydrological understanding of rock glaciers, in terms of (i) their genesis and geomorphological dynamics (ii) total ice/water volume; (iii) water discharge; and (iv) water quality. Lastly, we hypothesise that at decadal and longer timescales, under future climate warming, degradation of ice within rock glaciers may represent an increasing hydrological contribution to downstream regions, and thus increased hydrological significance while rock glacier water stores persist.

Rock glaciers are an important geomorphic element of glaciated mountain landscapes, but our understanding of their distribution and ages, controls on their development, and their importance in regional mountain hydrology and mountain geomorphic evolution is incomplete. In part, this incomplete knowledge arises through problems associated with identifying rock glaciers on a morphological basis alone, amplified by the multiple ways in which rock glaciers can form in different glacial, periglacial, and paraglacial settings. This study focuses on rock glaciers as a paraglacial mountain landscape element and considers the relationships between rock glaciers and glacial, periglacial, and paraglacial processes. New geomorphic and sedimentary data on different rock glaciers from the Khumbu region of Nepal are presented. These data show that even within a single region, rock glaciers may have varied origins and thus likely ages and different climatic and environmental controls. We argue that rock glaciers in deglacierizing mountains may have a long residence time in the landscape, unlike many other glacially influenced mountain landforms, and can undergo significant morphodynamic changes as glaciated landscapes transition into paraglacial landscapes.

La Cordillera Blanca está experimentando un rápido deshielo debido al calentamiento climático, especialmente desde finales del siglo XX. Este proceso ha resultado en la formación de nuevos lagos glaciares y un aumento en el volumen de los lagos existentes, algunos de los cuales representan un riesgo en forma de inundaciones por desbordamiento de lagos glaciares (GLOF); como el lago Parón en la Cordillera Blanca, que representa un peligro importante para la ciudad de Caraz y poblaciones menores ubicadas en la subcuenca Llullán-Parón. Aquí, modelamos un posible escenario de ruptura de presa y generación de GLOF en el lago Parón utilizando un procedimiento de modelado numérico novedoso que, entre otros factores, considera la estructura geológica de la presa natural. En general, este procedimiento incluye cuatro fases distintas: (1) estimación del impacto potencial de una avalancha de hielo en el lago Parón proveniente de los circos glaciares circundantes; (2) modelado de la posterior generación y propagación de ondas impulsivas; (3) análisis de los parámetros hidráulicos de una posible ruptura de la presa natural, considerando el material no erosionable dentro de estimaciones empíricas del hidrograma donde se interpreta la composición de la presa en base al mapeo geológico superficial y muestreo de sondeos realizados en la zona ; y (4) simulación de un GLOF potencial utilizando el modelo FLO-2D con datos de entrada de las fases anteriores. Los resultados del modelo indican que el lago Parón está en mayor riesgo por las avalanchas de hielo que se originan en el glaciar adyacente Hatunraju y que tales eventos tienen el potencial de generar ondas de impulso que podrían iniciar la erosión y una ruptura posterior de la presa natural. Considerando el peor de los escenarios de avalancha de hielo,3 / s. Este evento GLOF llegaría al área urbana de la ciudad de Caraz en alrededor de 36 a 42 minutos con tasas y alturas de inundación que fluctúan entre 11,2 m/s a 22,4 m/s y 9,9 m a 19,7 m, respectivamente.

Climate change is resulting in mass loss and the retreat of glaciers in the Andes, exposing steep valley sides, over-deepened valley bottoms, and creating glacial lakes behind moraine dams. Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) present the biggest risk posed by glacier recession in Peru. Understanding the characteristics of lakes that have failed in the past will provide an aid to identifying those lakes that might fail in the future and narrow down which lakes are of greatest interest for reducing the risks to local vulnerable populations. Using a newly created lake inventory for the Peruvian Andes (Wood et al., in review) and a comprehensive GLOF inventory (unpublished) we investigate lakes from which GLOFs have occurred in the past. This is to establish which physical components of the glacial lake systems are common to those lakes that have failed previously and which can be identified remotely, easily and objectively, in order to improve existing methods of hazard assessment.

The Cordillera Blanca is undergoing rapid deglaciation due to climatic warming, especially since the late 20th century. This process has resulted in the formation of new glacial lakes and an increase in the volume of existing lakes, some of which pose a risk in the form of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF); such as Parón lake in the Cordillera Blanca, which represents a significant hazard to the Caraz city and smaller populations located in the Llullán-Parón sub-basin. Here, we model a potential dam breach and GLOF generation scenario at Parón lake using a novel numerical modelling procedure that, amongst other factors, considers the geological structure of the natural dam. Overall, this procedure includes four distinct phases: (1) estimation of the potential for ice avalanche impact on Parón lake sourced from surrounding glacial cirques; (2) modelling of subsequent impulsive wave generation and propagation; (3) analysis of the hydraulic parameters of a possible breach of the natural dam, considering the non-erodible material within empirical estimations of the hydrograph where the composition of the dam is interpreted based on surface geological mapping and drill sampling carried out in the area; and (4) simulation of a potential GLOF using the FLO-2D model with input data from the previous phases. Modelling results indicate that Parón lake is most at risk from ice avalanches that originate from the adjacent Hatunraju glacier and that such events have the potential to generate impulse waves that could initiate erosion and a subsequent breach of the natural dam. Considering a worst-case ice avalanche scenario, our results indicate the potential generation of a GLOF with average peaks flow of 25,264.22 m3/s. This GLOF event would reach the urban area of the Caraz city in around 36 - 42 minutes with now rates and flood heights fluctuating between 11.2 m/s to 22.4 m/s and 9.9 m to 19.7 m, respectively.

In the high mountains of Asia, ongoing glacier retreat threatens human and ecological systems through reduced water availability. Rock glaciers are climatically more resistant than glaciers and contain valuable water volume equivalents (WVEQ). Across High Mountain Asia (HMA) the WVEQ of rock glaciers is poorly quantified, and thus their hydrological significance versus glaciers is unknown. Here we present the first systematic assessment of Himalayan rock glaciers, totalling ~25,000 landforms with an areal coverage of ~3747 km2. We calculate the WVEQ of Himalayan rock glaciers to be 51.80 ± 10.36 km3. Their comparative importance versus glaciers (rock glacier: glacier WVEQ ratio) is 1:25, which means that they constitute hydrologically valuable long-term water stores. In the context of climate-driven glacier recession, their relative hydrological value will likely increase. These cryospheric stores should be included in future scenario modelling to understand their role in sustainable water management for HMA.

We present PATICE, a GIS database of Patagonian glacial geomorphology and recalibrated chronological data. PATICE includes 58,823 landforms and 1,669 geochronological ages, and extends from 38°S to 55°S in southern South America. We use these data to generate new empirical reconstructions of the Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) and subsequent ice masses and ice-dammed palaeolakes at 35 ka, 30 ka, 25 ka, 20 ka, 15 ka, 13 ka (synchronous with the Antarctic Cold Reversal), 10 ka, 5 ka, 0.2 ka and 2011 AD. At 35 ka, the PIS covered of 492.6 x103 km2, had a sea level equivalent of ~1,496 mm, was 350 km wide and 2090 km long, and was grounded on the Pacific continental shelf edge. Outlet glacier lobes remained topographically confined and the largest generated the suites of subglacial streamlined bedforms characteristic of ice streams. The PIS reached its maximum extent by 33 – 28 ka from 38°S to 48°S, and earlier, around 47 ka from 48°S southwards. Net retreat from maximum positions began by 25 ka, with ice-marginal stabilisation then at 21 – 18 ka, which was then followed by rapid, irreversible deglaciation. By 15 ka, the PIS had separated into disparate ice masses, draining into large ice-dammed lakes along the eastern margin, which strongly influenced rates of recession. Glacial readvances or stabilisations occurred at least at 14 – 13 ka, 11 ka, 6 – 5 ka, 2 – 1 ka, and 0.5 – 0.2 ka. We suggest that 20th century glacial recession (% a-1) is occurring faster than at any time documented during the Holocene.

Understanding the evolution of debris-covered glaciers, including their evolution over time, the distribution of surface features such as exposed ice walls and supraglacial lakes, and their contributions to glacier ice melt and to glacier-related hazards such as Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) events requires an interdisciplinary approach, with a combination of remote sensing methods and collaborative fieldwork.Since 2017, the IGCP 672 /UNESCO project led has been focussing on the transfer of scientific knowledge on monitoring debris-covered glaciers to local partner institutions in high Asia through trainings, workshops and field collaborations. Our long-term goal is to disseminate methodologies developed under this project to local institutions in high Asia and to embed scientific knowledge into local communities. Here we report on recent capacity building activities held within the context of this new project involved local participants from universities in Nepal and Sikkim. The training included remote sensing/GIS modules, temperature measurements, sediment logging and drone surveys of the ablation zone, which will allow us to better quantify the surface features and their evolution.

One consequence of current and likely future melting of high mountain glaciers is the development of glacial lakes. Their evolution over time has implications for future water supplies in arid mountains and for the timing and magnitude of glacier hazards, such as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).GLOF initiation depends on how lakes are connected to the glacial system, resulting from myriad processes such as the destabilisation of moraine dams and glacier front calving. To better understand these processes, we have undertaken an inventory of all glacier lakes in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru for 2019. We used manual digitisation from Landsat RGB at 30m resolution and have recorded the type of lake dam and its connection with surrounding glaciers and mountain slopes. We have also obtained lake inventories from INIAGEM (Instituto Nacional de Investigación en Glaciares y Ecosistemas de Montaña; 2016) and ANA (Autoridad Nacional del Agua; 2018), and have created an automatic inventory using the Normalised Difference Water Index and Normalised Difference Snow Index in Google Earth Engine. In this presentation we compare these different inventories and discuss both the methods and effectiveness of each for understanding GLOF hazards in the Peruvian Andes.

Understanding the evolution of debris-covered glaciers in High Mountain Asia is important for making informed projections of climate change impacts and associated water security and hazard-related issues. Here we describe the geomorphology of Ponkar Glacier, a debris-covered glacier in Nepal using high-resolution images from 2017 and 2019 based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flights collected over the glacier and surrounding area in the field. These are used to describe the overall glacier morphology and its ice-surface geomorphology. The key features of the glacier and its ice-surface morphology are described, including size and extent of tributary glaciers; changes in % of debris cover, lakes, ponds, ice cliffs, crevasses, and vegetation. Geomorphological mapping is used to describe the proglacial geomorphology, outwash plains and proglacial streams, the development of new ice-marginal ponds and changes in vegetation. We use these data to make inferences about the processes of moraine formation in this area.

The region around Land’s End, Cornwall, forms the southwesternmost tip of England and shows a range of distinctive upland and coastal landscapes that reflect the effects of physical and chemical weathering of granite over long geological time periods. Hydrothermal weathering of the Land’s End granite resulted in the concentration of metal-rich ores in surrounding country rocks, and provided the conditions under which the tin mining industry developed during the seventeenth century. During the Pleistocene, the region was strongly affected by periglacial processes, and these helped shape the weathered granite summits (tors) found in upland areas. Unconsolidated weathered products have accumulated over bedrock surfaces, in particular in coastal lowlands. Stratigraphic evidence from key coastal sites provides a record of late Pleistocene environmental change, in which enhanced slope sediment supply by solifluction took place during more humid periods. In combination, late Pleistocene geomorphic processes and human exploitation of mineral deposits have shaped both the physical and human environments of the Land’s End region, giving west Cornwall its distinctive character and identity.
