We present Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional one-component plasma (2D OCP) confined to a cylindrical geometry, focusing on density profiles, fluctuations, and their connection to bulk correlation functions. The cylindrical geometry eliminates geometric frustration, allowing for a precise study of boundary density oscillations, the dependence on boundary conditions, and their relationship to the melting transition and triangular lattice structure. By triangulating particle configurations, we quantify the exponential suppression of topological defects in the crystalline phase. Furthermore, we propose an oriented correlation function that better links boundary density profiles with bulk correlation functions, motivating anisotropic generalizations of the phase-field crystal (PFC) model. These results provide new insights into the interplay between boundary effects, bulk correlations, and phase transitions in the 2D OCP., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Fluctuations of observables provide unique insights into the nature of physical systems, and their study stands as a cornerstone of both theoretical and experimental science. Generalized fluctuations, or cumulants, provide information beyond the mean and variance of an observable. In this letter, we develop a systematic method to determine the asymptotic behavior of cumulants of local observables as the region becomes large. Our analysis reveals that the expansion is closely tied to the geometric characteristics of the region and its boundary, with coefficients given by convex moments of the connected correlation function: the latter is integrated against intrinsic volumes of convex polytopes built from the coordinates, which can be interpreted as averaged shadows. A particular application of our method shows that, in two dimensions, the leading behavior of odd cumulants of conserved quantities is topological, specifically depending on the Euler characteristic of the region. We illustrate these results with the paradigmatic strongly-interacting system of two-dimensional quantum Hall state at filling fraction $1/2$, by performing Monte-Carlo calculations of the skewness (third cumulant) of particle number in the Laughlin state., Comment: 4+8 pages, 3+3 figures

We demonstrate that the plasma analogy is generally unreliable at predicting the edge properties of quantum Hall (QH) states, as it fails to account for the local edge velocity. This discrepancy arises from a fundamental difference between QH droplets and Coulomb gases (CGs): the former are incompressible liquids subject to area-preserving deformations, while the latter are governed by electrostatics and thus involve conformal transformations. We illustrate this QH/CG mismatch across various examples and show its impact on physical quantities, measurable in both solid-state samples and quantum simulators. We study two-dimensional (2D) droplets of noninteracting electrons in a strong magnetic field, placed in a confining potential with arbitrary shape. Using semiclassical methods adapted to the lowest Landau level, we obtain near-Gaussian energy eigenstates that are localized on level curves of the potential and have a position-dependent height. This one-particle insight allows us to deduce explicit formulas for expectation values of local many-body observables, such as density and current, in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, correlations along the edge are long-ranged and inhomogeneous. As we show, this is consistent with the system's universal low-energy description as a free 1D chiral conformal field theory of edge modes, known from earlier works in simple geometries. A delicate interplay between radial and angular dependencies of eigenfunctions ultimately ensures that the theory is homogeneous in terms of the canonical angle variable of the potential, despite its apparent inhomogeneity in terms of more na\"ive angular coordinates. Finally, we propose a scheme to measure the anisotropy by subjecting the droplet to microwave radiation; we compute the corresponding absorption rate and show that it depends on the droplet's shape and the waves' polarization. Outcomes of measurements are characterized by an infinite family of generalized uncertainties, or cumulants, which provide information beyond the mean and variance of the observable. Here, we investigate the cumulants of a conserved charge in a subregion with corners. We derive nonperturbative relations for the area law, and more interestingly, the angle dependence, showing how it is determined by geometric moments of the correlation function. These hold for translation invariant systems under great generality, including strongly interacting ones. We test our findings by using two-dimensional topological quantum Hall states of bosons and fermions at both integer and fractional fillings. We find that the odd cumulants' shape dependence differs from the even ones. For instance, the third cumulant shows nearly universal behavior for integer and fractional Laughlin Hall states in the lowest Landau level. Furthermore, we examine the relation between even cumulants and the R\'enyi entanglement entropy, where we use new results for the fractional state at filling 1/3 to compare these quantities in the strongly interacting regime. We study the time evolution of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain initialized in a domain wall state, where all spins to the left of the origin are up, all spins to its right are down. The focus is on exact formulae, which hold for arbitrary finite (real or imaginary) time. In particular, we compute the amplitudes corresponding to the process where all but $k$ spins come back to their initial orientation, as a $k-$fold contour integral. These results are obtained using a correspondence with the six vertex model, and taking a somewhat complicated Hamiltonian/Trotter-type limit. The gapless modes on the edge of four-dimensional (4D) quantum Hall droplets are known to be anisotropic: they only propagate in one direction, foliating the 3D boundary into independent 1D conduction channels. This foliation is extremely sensitive to the confining potential and generically yields chaotic flows. Here we study the quantum correlations and entanglement of such edge modes in 4D droplets confined by harmonic traps, whose boundary is a squashed three-sphere. Commensurable trapping frequencies lead to periodic trajectories of electronic guiding centers; the corresponding edge modes propagate independently along $S^1$ fibers, forming a bundle of 1D conformal field theories over a 2D base space. By contrast, incommensurable frequencies produce quasi-periodic, ergodic trajectories, each of which covers its invariant torus densely; the corresponding correlation function of edge modes has fractal features. This wealth of behaviors highlights the sharp differences between 4D Hall droplets and their 2D peers; it also exhibits the dependence of 4D edge modes on the choice of trap, suggesting the existence of observable bifurcations due to droplet deformations., Comment: 24 pages + 17 pages, 18 figures. v2: added appendix E

Understanding the fluctuations of observables is one of the main goals in science, be it theoretical or experimental, quantum or classical. We investigate such fluctuations when only a subregion of the full system can be observed, focusing on geometries with sharp corners. We report that the dependence on the opening angle is super-universal: up to a numerical prefactor, this function does not depend on anything, provided the system under study is uniform, isotropic, and correlations do not decay too slowly. The prefactor contains important physical information: we show in particular that it gives access to the long-wavelength limit of the structure factor. We illustrate our findings with several examples, including fractional quantum Hall states, scale invariant quantum critical theories, and metals. We revisit the problem of computing the boundary density profile of a droplet of two-dimensional one-component plasma (2D OCP) with logarithmic interaction between particles in a confining harmonic potential. At a sufficiently low temperature but still in the liquid phase, the density exhibits oscillations as a function of the distance to the boundary of the droplet. We obtain the density profile numerically using Monte-Carlo simulations of the 2D OCP. We argue that the decay and period of those oscillations can be explained within a picture of the Wigner crystallization near the boundary, where the crystal is gradually melted with the increasing distance to the boundary., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures; figure 12 updated

We study a translational invariant free fermions model in imaginary time, with nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor hopping terms, for a class of inhomogeneous boundary conditions. This model is known to give rise to limit shapes and arctic curves, in the absence of the next-nearest neighbor perturbation. The perturbation considered turns out to not be always positive, that is, the corresponding statistical mechanical model does not always have positive Boltzmann weights. We investigate how the density profile is affected by this nonpositive perturbation. We find that in some regions, the effects of the negative signs are suppressed, and renormalize to zero. However, depending on boundary conditions, new "crazy regions" emerge, in which minus signs proliferate, and the density of fermions is not in $[0,1]$ anymore. Standard statistical mechanical or condensed matter arguments tell us that bulk properties of a physical system do not depend too much on boundary conditions. Random tilings of large regions provide counterexamples to such intuition, as illustrated by the famous 'arctic circle theorem' for dimer coverings in two dimensions. In these notes, I discuss such examples in the context of critical phenomena, and their relation to 1+1d quantum particle models. All those turn out to share a common feature: they are inhomogeneous, in the sense that local densities now depend on position in the bulk. I explain how such problems may be understood using variational (or hydrodynamic) arguments, how to treat long range correlations, and how non trivial edge behavior can occur. While all this is done on the example of the dimer model, the results presented here have much greater generality. In that sense the dimer model serves as an opportunity to discuss broader methods and results. We investigate the entanglement entropy in the Integer Quantum Hall effect in the presence of an edge, performing an exact calculation directly from the microscopic two-dimensional wavefunction. The edge contribution is shown to coincide exactly with that of a chiral Dirac fermion, and this correspondence holds for an arbitrary collection of intervals. In particular for a single interval the celebrated conformal formula is recovered with left and right central charges $c+\bar{c} =1$. Using Monte-Carlo techniques we establish that this behavior persists for strongly interacting systems such as Laughlin liquids. This illustrates how entanglement entropy is not only capable of detecting the presence of massless degrees of freedom, but also of pinpointing their position in real space, as well as elucidating their nature., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

We develop a general framework to compute the scaling of entanglement entropy in inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems belonging to the Luttinger liquid universality class. While much insight has been gained in homogeneous systems by making use of conformal field theory techniques, our focus is on systems for which the Luttinger parameter $K$ depends on position, and conformal invariance is broken. An important point of our analysis is that contributions stemming from the UV cutoff have to be treated very carefully, since they now depend on position. We show that such terms can be removed either by considering regularized entropies specifically designed to do so, or by tabulating numerically the cutoff, and reconstructing its contribution to the entropy through the local density approximation. We check our method numerically in the spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain in a spatially varying magnetic field, and find excellent agreement., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

We study the edge behavior of inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems, such as Lieb-Liniger models in traps or spin chains in spatially varying magnetic fields. For free systems these fall into several universality classes, the most generic one being governed by the Tracy-Widom distribution. We investigate in this paper the effect of interactions. Using semiclassical arguments, we show that since the density vanishes to leading order, the strong interactions in the bulk are renormalized to zero at the edge, which simply explains the survival of Tracy-Widom scaling in general. For integrable systems, it is possible to push this argument further, and determine exactly the remaining length scale which controls the variance of the edge distribution. This analytical prediction is checked numerically, with excellent agreement. We consider the unitary dynamics of interacting fermions in the lowest Landau level, on spherical and toroidal geometries. The dynamics are driven by the interaction Hamiltonian which, viewed in the basis of single-particle Landau orbitals, contains correlated pair hopping terms in addition to static repulsion. This setting and this type of Hamiltonian has a significant history in numerical studies of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) physics, but the many-body quantum dynamics generated by such correlated hopping has not been explored in detail. We focus on initial states containing all the fermions in one block of orbitals. We characterize in detail how the fermionic liquid spreads out starting from such a state. We identify and explain differences with regular (single-particle) hopping Hamiltonians. Such differences are seen, e.g. in the entanglement dynamics, in that some initial block states are frozen or near-frozen, and in density gradients persisting in long-time equilibrated states. Examining the level spacing statistics, we show that the most common Hamiltonians used in FQH physics are not integrable, and explain that GOE statistics (level statistics corresponding to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble) can appear in many cases despite the lack of time-reversal symmetry., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures

We study the return probability and its imaginary ($\tau$) time continuation after a quench from a domain wall initial state in the XXZ spin chain, focusing mainly on the region with anisotropy $|\Delta|< 1$. We establish exact Fredholm determinant formulas for those, by exploiting a connection to the six vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. In imaginary time, we find the expected scaling for a partition function of a statistical mechanical model of area proportional to $\tau^2$, which reflects the fact that the model exhibits the limit shape phenomenon. In real time, we observe that in the region $|\Delta|<1$ the decay for large times $t$ is nowhere continuous as a function of anisotropy: it is either gaussian at root of unity or exponential otherwise. As an aside, we also determine that the front moves as $x_{\rm f}(t)=t\sqrt{1-\Delta^2}$, by analytic continuation of known arctic curves in the six vertex model. Exactly at $|\Delta|=1$, we find the return probability decays as $e^{-\zeta(3/2) \sqrt{t/\pi}}t^{1/2}O(1)$. It is argued that this result provides an upper bound on spin transport. We analyze universal terms that appear in the large system size scaling of the overlap between the N\'eel state and the ground state of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain in the antiferromagnetic regime. In a critical theory, the order one term of the asymptotics of such an overlap may be expressed in terms of $g$-factors, known in the context of boundary conformal field theory. In particular, for the XXZ model in its gapless phase, this term provides access to the Luttinger parameter. In its gapped phase, on the other hand, the order one term simply reflects the symmetry broken nature of the phase. In order to study the large system size scaling of this overlap analytically and to compute the order one term exactly, we use a recently derived finite-size determinant formula and perform an asymptotic expansion. Our analysis confirms the predictions of boundary conformal field theory and enables us to determine the exponent of the leading finite-size correction., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, minor changes. The light-cone spreading of entanglement and correlation is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of homogeneous extended quantum systems. Here we point out that a class of inhomogenous Luttinger liquids (those with a uniform Luttinger parameter $K$) at low energy display the universal phenomenon of curved light cones: gapless excitations propagate along the geodesics of the metric $ds^2=dx^2+v(x)^2 d\tau^2$, with $v(x)$ being the calculable spatial dependent velocity induced by the inhomogeneity. We confirm our findings with explicit analytic and numerical calculations both in- and out-of-equilibrium for a Tonks-Girardeau gas in a harmonic potential and in lattice systems with artificially tuned hamiltonian density., Comment: v1: 20 pages + refs, 7 figures. v2: references added. v3: minor changes

We present analytical and numerical results regarding the magnetization full counting statistics (FCS) of a subsystem in the ground-state of the Haldane-Shastry chain. Exact Pfaffian expressions are derived for the cumulant generating function, as well as any observable diagonal in the spin basis. In the limit of large systems, the scaling of the FCS is found to be in agreement with the Luttinger liquid theory. The same techniques are also applied to inhomogeneous deformations of the chain. This introduces a certain amount of disorder in the system; however we show numerically that this is not sufficient to flow to the random singlet phase, that corresponds to $XXZ$ chains with uncorrelated bond disorder., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Conformal field theory (CFT) has been extremely successful in describing large-scale universal effects in one-dimensional (1D) systems at quantum critical points. Unfortunately, its applicability in condensed matter physics has been limited to situations in which the bulk is uniform because CFT describes low-energy excitations around some energy scale, taken to be constant throughout the system. However, in many experimental contexts, such as quantum gases in trapping potentials and in several out-of-equilibrium situations, systems are strongly inhomogeneous. We show here that the powerful CFT methods can be extended to deal with such 1D situations, providing a few concrete examples for non-interacting Fermi gases. The system's inhomogeneity enters the field theory action through parameters that vary with position; in particular, the metric itself varies, resulting in a CFT in curved space. Motivated by quantum quenches in spin chains, a one-dimensional toy-model of fermionic particles evolving in imaginary-time from a domain-wall initial state is solved. The main interest of this toy-model is that it exhibits the arctic circle phenomenon, namely a spatial phase separation between a critically fluctuating region and a frozen region. Large-scale correlations inside the critical region are expressed in terms of correlators in a (euclidean) two-dimensional massless Dirac field theory. It is observed that this theory is inhomogenous: the metric is position-dependent, so it is in fact a Dirac field theory in curved space. The technique used to solve the toy-model is then extended to deal with the transfer matrices of other models: dimers on the honeycomb and square lattice, and the six-vertex model at the free fermion point ($\Delta=0$). In all cases, explicit expressions are given for the long-range correlations in the critical region, as well as for the underlying Dirac action. Although the setup developed here is heavily based on fermionic observables, the results can be translated into the language of height configurations and of the gaussian free field, via bosonization. The dynamics after a quantum quench is determined by the weights of the initial state in the eigenspectrum of the final Hamiltonian, i.e., by the distribution of overlaps in the energy spectrum. We present an analysis of such overlap distributions for quenches of the anisotropy parameter in the one-dimensional anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model (XXZ chain). We provide an overview of the form of the overlap distribution for quenches from various initial anisotropies to various final ones, using numerical exact diagonalization. We show that if the system is prepared in the antiferromagnetic N\'eel state (infinite anisotropy) and released into a non-interacting setup (zero anisotropy, XX point) only a small fraction of the final eigenstates gives contributions to the post-quench dynamics, and that these eigenstates have identical overlap magnitudes. We derive expressions for the overlaps, and present the selection rules that determine the final eigenstates having nonzero overlap. We use these results to derive concise expressions for time-dependent quantities (Loschmidt echo, longitudinal and transverse correlators) after the quench. We use perturbative analyses to understand the overlap distribution for quenches from infinite to small nonzero anisotropies, and for quenches from large to zero anisotropy., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

At a quantum critical point, bipartite entanglement entropies have universal quantities which are subleading to the ubiquitous area law. For Renyi entropies, these terms are known to be similar to the von Neumann entropy, while being much more amenable to numerical and even experimental measurement. We show here that when calculating universal properties of Renyi entropies, it is important to account for unusual corrections to scaling that arise from relevant local operators present at the conical singularity in the multi-sheeted Riemann surface. These corrections grow in importance with increasing Renyi index. We present studies of Renyi correlation functions in the 1+1 transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) using conformal field theory, mapping to free fermions, and series expansions, and the logarithmic entropy singularity at a corner in 2+1 for both free bosonic field theory and the TFIM, using numerical linked cluster expansions. In all numerical studies, accurate results are only obtained when unusual corrections to scaling are taken into account. In the worst case, an analysis ignoring these corrections can get qualitatively incorrect answers, such as predicting a decrease in critical exponents with the Renyi index, when they are actually increasing. We consider the non-equilibrium physics induced by joining together two tight binding fermionic chains to form a single chain. Before being joined, each chain is in a many-fermion ground state. The fillings (densities) in the two chains might be the same or different. We present a number of exact results for the correlation functions in the non-interacting case. We present a short-time expansion, which can sometimes be fully resummed, and which reproduces the so-called `light cone' effect or wavefront behavior of the correlators. For large times, we show how all interesting physical regimes may be obtained by stationary phase approximation techniques. In particular, we derive semiclassical formulas in the case when both time and positions are large, and show that these are exact in the thermodynamic limit. We present subleading corrections to the large-time behavior, including the corrections near the edges of the wavefront. We also provide results for the return probability or Loschmidt echo. In the maximally inhomogeneous limit, we prove that it is exactly gaussian at all times. Concepts of information theory are increasingly used to characterize collective phenomena in condensed matter systems, such as the use of entanglement entropies to identify emergent topological order in interacting quantum many-body systems. Here we employ classical variants of these concepts, in particular R\'enyi entropies and their associated mutual information, to identify topological order in classical systems. Like for their quantum counterparts, the presence of topological order can be identified in such classical systems via a universal, subleading contribution to the prevalent volume and boundary laws of the classical R\'enyi entropies. We demonstrate that an additional subleading $O(1)$ contribution generically arises for all R\'enyi entropies $S^{(n)}$ with $n \geq 2$ when driving the system towards a phase transition, e.g. into a conventionally ordered phase. This additional subleading term, which we dub connectivity contribution, tracks back to partial subsystem ordering and is proportional to the number of connected parts in a given bipartition. Notably, the Levin-Wen summation scheme -- typically used to extract the topological contribution to the R\'enyi entropies -- does not fully eliminate this additional connectivity contribution in this classical context. This indicates that the distillation of topological order from R\'enyi entropies requires an additional level of scrutiny to distinguish topological from non-topological $O(1)$ contributions. This is also the case for quantum systems, for which we discuss which entropies are sensitive to these connectivity contributions. We showcase these findings by extensive numerical simulations of a classical variant of the toric code model, for which we study the stability of topological order in the presence of a magnetic field and at finite temperatures from a R\'enyi entropy perspective., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures
