8. Understanding the nature of institutionalization for children in Russia

Abstract

There is an ongoing debate in contemporary international literature about how state care provision is ‘failing’ children and young people in care. In Russia, institutional care is the most widespread with this type of child care placement representing 98 per cent of all out-of-home care facilities for children after kinship care (Groark et al., 2008; Human Rights Watch, 1998). However, since Soviet times institutional care in Russia has rarely been the focus of research or welfare policy debates aiming to explore and potentially improve the existing infrastructure of the child care system. Clear cut gaps in understanding of how institutional care in Russia operates include unawareness of basic everyday experiences of children and young people. This fact severely hinders the development of effective changes in policy and practice. Since Russia is currently facing record numbers of children and young people entering care, it is easy to see how the topic of institutionalization has become one of the pressing priorities on the national agenda (Philanthropy, 2011 ). This thesis aims to improve the understanding of institutionalization in Russia through a systematic exploration of a range of experiences within institutional care as well as an in-depth investigation of key factors and characteristics which define institutional being. Drawing on the philosophical underpinning of critical realism, this research challenges the global conceptualization of the institutional care focusing on how the institutionalization comes to be as it is. The data is obtained from a combination of two methods namely questionnaires with care leavers and care givers followed by ethnographic participant observation conducted in four child care institutions in Russia. The results of the study suggest that the process of institutionalization plays a role of a large family for children in care as well as for those who left care. Having both positive and negative experiences of care, institutionalization is informed and shaped by the factors of power, collectivism, distance and intimacy in relationships, suppressed individuality and wider society. Developed in response to provision of protection and safety of children, the imbalance in these practices often contributes to the bleak picture of care. This study addresses the substantial gap in the literature providing an in-depth portrait of institutional care and institutionalization in Russia. The thesis highlights that institutional being is the product of a complex interplay among individuals and a network of contextual, cultural, organisational, social and individual factors and characteristics. These factors and aspects need to be acknowledged and addressed where possible to support institutional being of children and young people.

Abstract

Optical methods (spectroscopy, spectrofluorometry, dynamic light scattering, and refractometry) were used to study the change in the state of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL), protein molecules, and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in aqueous colloids with changes in pH, and the interaction of protein molecules with nanoparticles was also studied. It was shown that changing pH may be the easiest way to control the protein corona on gold nanoparticles. In a colloid of nanoparticles, both in the presence and absence of protein, aggregation–deaggregation, and in a protein colloid, monomerization–dimerization–aggregation are the main processes when pH is changed. A specific point at pH 7.5, where a transition of the colloidal system from one state to another is observed, has been found using all the optical methods mentioned. It has been shown that gold nanoparticles can stabilize HEWL protein molecules at alkaline pH while maintaining enzymatic activity, which can be used in practice. The data obtained in this manuscript allow for the state of HEWL colloids and gold nanoparticles to be monitored using one or two simple and accessible optical methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction using dialkyne and diazide comonomers, both bearing explosophoric groups, to synthesize energetic polymers containing furazan and 1,2,3-triazole ring as well as nitramine group in the polymer chain have been described. The developed solvent- and catalyst-free approach is methodologically simple and effective, the comonomers used are easily available, and the resulting polymer does not need any purification. All this makes it a promising tool for the synthesis of energetic polymers. The protocol was utilized to generate multigram quantities of the target polymer, which has been comprehensively investigated. The resulting polymer was fully characterized by spectral and physico-chemical methods. Compatibility with energetic plasticizers, thermochemical characteristics, and combustion features indicate the prospects of this polymer as a binder base for energetic materials. Abstract

Amid considerable interest in the experiences of early career professionals in social work in England and internationally, and the relationship between these and retention and progression, this article reports on the findings of one element of a larger evaluation. It reports the findings and analysis of interviews with 42 relative newcomers to social work, some 3 years following qualification, focusing on their current career orientations, and how these appear to affect their future intentions. We identified three distinct groups, designated as "strivers," "doers," and "seekers." Each of these groups demonstrated a different kind and level of commitment to their social work role and identity: Strivers were oriented towards career progression and taking on senior roles; doers were committed practitioners who saw themselves as continuing in front line service delivery for the foreseeable future; and seekers, although still committed to social work in principle, tended to be more unsure about their future place in the profession. This typology appears to be reasonably robust on the basis of our investigation and has implications for career planning and supervision of social work professionals, especially at the early stages of their careers. Abstract

A series of N6-adenosine derivatives were synthesized by alkylation of N6-acetyl-2′,3′,5′-tri- O-acetyladenosine (1) with alkyl halides and alcohols. It was shown that propargyl derivative 2a is a good substrate for copper(I) catalyzed Huisgen [3+2] cycloaddition with azides. This click-reaction can be used for preparation of the libraries of 1,2,3-triazolyl modified adenosines. Biological activities of N6-adenosines were studied in two plant and six human cancer cell assays. The remarkable parallel between cytokinin and cytotoxic activities was found. Abstract

Target inhibitors are used for melanoma treatment, and their effectiveness depends on the tumor genotype. We developed a diagnostic biochip for the detection of 39 clinically relevant somatic mutations in the BRAF , NRAS , KIT , GNAQ , GNA11 , MAP2K1 and MAP2K2 genes. We used multiplex locked nucleic acid (LNA) PCR clamp for the preferable amplification of mutated over wild type DNA. The amplified fragments were labeled via the incorporation of fluorescently labeled dUTP during PCR and were hybridized with specific oligonucleotides immobilized on a biochip. This approach could detect 0.5% of mutated DNA in the sample analyzed. The method was validated on 253 clinical samples and six melanoma cell lines. Among 253 melanomas, 129 (51.0%) BRAF , 45 (17.8%) NRAS , 6 (2.4%) KIT , 4 (1.6%) GNAQ , 2 (0.8%) GNA11 , 2 (0.8%) MAP2K1 and no MAP2K2 gene mutations were detected by the biochip assay. The results were compared with Sanger sequencing, next generation sequencing and ARMS/Scorpion real-time PCR. The specimens with discordant results were subjected to LNA PCR clamp followed by sequencing. The results of this analysis were predominantly identical to the results obtained by the biochip assay. Infrequently, we identified rare somatic mutations. In the present study we demonstrate that the biochip-based assay can effectively detect somatic mutations in approximately 70% of melanoma patients, who may require specific targeted therapy., Competing Interests: CONFLICTS OF INTEREST The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
