Abstract

This journal is an international review for researchers and teachers of modern Celtic languages. This volume contains seven articles. There are three research articles: "Issues in the Design of Irish Credited Courses" (Thomas W. Ihde); "Learning Irish for Participation in the Irish Language Speech Community outside the Gaeltacht" (Muiris O Laoire); and "Gaelic Language Maintenance Typologies and Constructs" (Kara A. Smith). There are two articles under the heading of Teaching Forum: "What Do You Do When the Teacher Needs a Teacher?" (Donall MacNamara); and "Taking the 'Aching' out of 'Teaching': Fun and Games in the Classroom" (Maray A. Watson). 29. Report of the Less Commonly Taught Languages Summit (Minneapolis, Minnesota, September 20-21, 1996).

Abstract

The report summarizes the proceedings of a conference on less commonly taught languages (LCTLs). An introductory chapter describes the origins and organization of the conference, and notes the sponsoring organizations, languages represented by participants, institutions represented, and professional associations to which participants belonged. Three subsequent chapters summarize the plenary talks and small group discussions of the three conference sessions. Topics include: promoting and protecting the LCTLs (student concerns, teacher concerns, enrollments, institutional cooperation, marketing LCTLs, curricular issues); pedagogy and materials (teacher training and professional development options, teacher cooperation and communication, analysis of a survey of participants, availability of pedagogical materials); and delivery systems (governance, technology). Appended materials include the conference announcement and application, the text of the survey of participants, and a list of participants. (MSE)

Abstract

The journal for teachers of Celtic languages in the United States and Canada contains six articles. "Motivation and Gender: A Welsh Case Study" (Christine M. Jones) examines data on characteristics of one group of students of Welsh, focusing on gender-related motivational differences. "Morphological Objects" (Annette McElligott, Gearoid O Neill) models the morphology of Irish inflectional verbs for the purpose of computer-assisted language instruction. In "The Status of Scottish Gaelic in Scotland" (Pamela S. Morgan), recent developments supporting the maintenance and revival of Scots Gaelic are described. "Developing Language Awareness in the Irish Language Classroom: A Case Study" (Muiris O Laoire) reports a study of Irish instruction in a class of secondary school children, in which a number of classroom instructional strategies were used to improve motivation and language awareness. "Teaching Irish at Antioch College" (Ron Crow) describes briefly an immersion approach tried at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and "A Brief History of the Department of Celtic Studies, Saint Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia" (Kenneth E. Nilsen) describes briefly the varied activities of the Department of Celtic Studies at Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada. The university is the only one in North America that offers three levels of Scottish Gaelic. A book review, announcements of new publications, and professional announcements are also included. (MSE)

31. Video in the Irish Language Classroom.

Abstract

Efforts to incorporate video-based exercises into a first-year Irish second language course at the University of Minnesota are reported and illustrated. Sample activities using sound and word recognition, matching, listening, completion, and creation techniques are outlined. Videotape recordings are first played without sound to introduce students to the physical aspects of the cultural setting and to provide a stimulus for vocabulary being learned. Listening practice, observation, and discussion follow. Considerations in creating homemade videotapes, selecting commercially designed materials, and managing the use of these materials in class are discussed, and the instructional potential in student development of videos is examined. Three appendices contain worksheets in Irish. (MSE)

34. One Step Forward and Two Steps Back in Teaching an Endangered Language? Revisiting L2 Reading in Irish

Abstract

Hickey's (1991) article ["Leisure reading in a second language: An experiment with audio tapes." "Language, Culture and Curriculum," 4(2), 119-131. Retrieved from http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/07908319109525098] reported the benefits of audio-support for L2 reading of real books, showing gains in fluency and motivation among 9-year-old learners of Irish. In the 25 years since that, there have been significant changes in the educational and sociolinguistic context in which Irish and Irish reading are taught. That period encompassed a major shift in the curricular approach to teaching Irish, and changes in status. With the advent of a new primary school curriculum, it is time to revisit this topic and reflect on how changes in the interim have impacted on the teaching of L2 Irish reading. This article reviews the societal and educational changes relevant to teaching Irish in mainstream (English-medium) schools, offering insights into current practices from a qualitative study of teachers' reflections on their pedagogical strategies, perceived priorities and difficulties encountered. Finally, it considers the advances made in the provision of materials supporting L2 Irish reading in the intervening years, and the challenges that remain with regard to promoting the use of those materials in mainstream classrooms.

35. Irish Orthography: What Do Teachers and Learners Need to Know about It, and Why?

Abstract

Irish has significant State support, but lacks a research base to support the teaching of Irish reading. Current approaches to teaching Irish reading are presented, and outcomes summarised. Issues of consistency and complexity in Irish orthography are discussed in light of an analysis of a corpus of early reader texts, and the formulation of rules for discriminating between words which are regular by letter-sound and grapheme-sound rules is outlined. While the most frequent words show a high level of regularity, underlying rules are very complex. The need to target decoding skills early is discussed. Recommendations regarding the teaching of aspects of Irish orthography are presented. (Contains 4 tables and 4 notes.)

36. The Effectiveness of Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training.

Abstract

The IBM SpeechViewer was used in tutorial sessions within a program of training for international teaching assistants (ITAs) to examine the value of computer-based displays of speech in the teaching of pronunciation. ITAs did not improve significantly with SpeechViewer, but both ITAs and instructors indicated great enthusiasm for it as a teaching tool. (15 references) (Author/LB)

Abstract

The focus of this handbook is to describe systematic patterns of spelling in Irish that can be explicitly taught to help pupils relate written Irish words to what they already know of spoken Irish. However, our ultimate goal is to facilitate and encourage Irish reading as a supplement to the classroom experience of spoken Irish, to increase exposure to the language and to build vocabulary and grammar knowledge. This handbook is not a comprehensive course on reading pedagogy, but we hope that it will help to provide teachers with some ideas for approaching the teaching of the relationship between Irish spelling and pronunciation,and perhaps help to enhance their confidence in their own understanding of the orthographic system of Irish. If any readers are dubious about the value of such instruction, we discuss that too, in the next chapters.
