Twenty-four patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament revision surgery were studied postoperatively (12 with reharvested ipsilateral patellar tendon grafts and 12 with contralateral patellar tendon grafts). For comparison purposes, 12 matched patients with primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, who had been operated on using the same technique by the same surgeons, were chosen. The median time since the first reconstruction was 57 months (range, 15 to 132) in the ipsilateral tendon group and 54 months (range, 20 to 108) in the contralateral tendon group. Follow-up examination showed that there were no significant differences in total KT-1000 arthrometer side-to-side measurements between the groups, but the Lysholm score was higher for patients with contralateral tendon grafts than for patients with ipsilateral grafts. Only two patients with ipsilateral grafts were classified as having excellent or good results. Functional testing outcomes were similar for all groups, and magnetic resonance imaging screening showed no differences between the reharvest and primary harvest groups in terms of length, width, thickness, or donor site gap of the patellar tendon. However, there were two major complications in the group with revision surgery with the ipsilateral reharvested patellar tendon. Reharvesting the ipsilateral patellar tendon resulted in lower functional scores and a higher rate of complications than revision with the contralateral patellar tendon or primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The aim of the study was to assess knee function after arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and to analyse complications impeding rehabilitation, additional surgery until the final follow-up, as well as residual patellofemoral pain and donor-site problems. Between 1991 and 1994, 635 patients were operated on using patellar tendon autografts and interference screw fixation. Of these, 604 (95.1%) patients (403 male and 201 female) were re-examined by independent observers at the final follow-up 38 (range 21–68) months post-operatively. The Lysholm score was 85 (range 14–100) points and the Tegner activity level was 6 (range 1–10). Using the IKDC score, 206 patients (34.1%) were classified as normal, 244 (40.4%) as nearly normal, 122 (20.2%) as abnormal and 32 (5.3%) as severely abnormal. In patients with an uninjured contralateral knee ( n = 527), the KT-1000 revealed a total side-to-side difference of 1.5 (range –7–11) mm, and 384/527 (72.9%) had a side-to-side difference of ≤ 3 mm. The one-leg-hop test was 95% (range 0%–167%). One or more complications impeding rehabilitation were recorded in 184/604 patients (30.5%). The most common was an extension deficit (> 5°), in 81 patients (13.4%). During the period until the final follow-up, 196 re-operations were performed in 161/604 (26.7%) patients. More than one re-operation was required in 27 patients. Shaving and anterior scar resection due to extension deficit were the most common procedures performed (on 65 occasions). Moderate to severe subjective anterior knee pain related to activity, walking up and down stairs, and sitting with the knee flexed was found in 203/604 patients (33.6%). The median loss of anterior knee sensitivity was 16 (range 0–288) cm2. Patients with a full range of motion had less anterior knee pain than patients with isolated flexion or extension deficits, or combined flexion and extension deficits ( P < 0.05, P = 0.08 and P < 0.001, respectively). Patients with a full range of motion had less anterior knee pain than patients with extension deficits (with and without flexion deficits) ( P < 0.001). Patients with a full range of motion and a minimal loss (≤ 4 cm2) of anterior knee sensitivity had significantly ( P < 0.01) less subjective anterior knee pain than patients who did not fulfil these criteria. A considerable number of complications hindering the rehabilitation and conditions requiring additional surgery until the final follow-up were recorded. The objective of this study was to assess knee function after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction focusing on residual donor-site problems. Ninety consecutive patients with chronic unilateral anterior cruciate ligament rupture were operated on by the same surgeon using patellar tendon autografts, the all-inside arthroscopic technique, and interference screw fixation. At the follow-up examination 24 (range 22– 32) months after the index operation, the median total anterior-posterior KT-1000 side-to-side difference was 2.5 (–7 to 11) mm. The median Lysholm score was 86 (range 37–100) points and the median Tegner activity level was 6 (range 1–9). Using the IKDC evaluation system, 62 of 90 (69%) were classified as normal or nearly normal. The median one-leg-hop quotient was 93 (range 0– 167)% of the uninjured leg. Of 90 patients, 44 (49%) had minor or no discomfort when asked to walk on their knees (kneewalkers) and 46 of 90 (51%) patients had severe problems or found it impossible to perform the test (non-kneewalkers). The ‘kneewalkers’ had a median loss of anterior knee sensitivity of 10 (range 0–120) cm2. The corresponding value for the ‘non-kneewalkers’ was 25 (range 0–200) cm2 ( P = 0.0001). Palpatory donor-site tenderness was registered in 19 of 44 (43%) of the ‘kneewalkers’ and 37 of 46 (80%) of the ‘non-kneewalkers’ ( P < 0.001). Full hyperextension was not regained by 9 of 44 (20%) of the ‘kneewalkers’ and 19 of 46 (41%) of the ‘non-kneewalkers’ ( P < 0.05). Additional surgery during the follow-up period was required by 6 of 44 (14%) of the ‘kneewalkers’ and 19 of 46 (41%) of the ‘non-kneewalkers’ ( P < 0.01). Magnetic resonance imaging focusing on the donor site was performed on 31 randomly selected patients and revealed no difference between the ‘kneewalkers’ and the ‘non-kneewalkers’ in terms of patellar tendon width, thickness, length, and residual donor-site gap size. The kneewalking test was found to be a functional and reliable test for detecting donor-site morbidity. It appears that donor-site morbidity was related to problems requiring additional surgery during the follow-up period, such as extension deficit and pain near the metal implant on the tibial side, as well as the loss of anterior knee sensitivity. It appears to be important to attempt to preserve the sensitivity in the operated area during surgery and to regain full hyperextension in the post-operative period to minimize donor-site morbidity. Achieving fully transparent electronic devices requires improving p-type transparent conducting materials (TCMs) to match their n-type counterparts. This study explores novel p-type TCMs using high-throughput screening via an automatic spray pyrolysis system. The performance of conducting wide bandgap chalcogenide based on CuS can be improved by incorporating various cations, with Mg emerging as the most promising candidate. The optimized CuS-Mg films exhibited superior transparency and conductivity, comparable to state-of-the-art p-type TCMs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations linked the inverse correlation between transparency and conductivity to changes in Cu 3d and S 3p orbital coupling with varying Mg content. The best CuS-Mg composition demonstrated high hole concentration (5 × 10 21 cm -3 ), low sheet resistance (266 Ω □ -1 ), and high transparency (∼75%). The transmittance increased by ∼30% compared with pristine CuS. The successful application of a p-CuS-Mg/n-CdS heterojunction as a semi-transparent photodiode highlights its potential for smart displays and window-integrated electronics. This study demonstrates the value of combining experimental and theoretical methods for accelerated material discovery.

Objective: Predictive coding is a theoretical framework that integrates models of brain dysconnectivity and psychopathology in psychosis. Thalamocortical dysconnectivity as well as reduced thalamic volumes have been reported in psychotic disorders. However, the role of the thalamus in predictive coding is not clear. We examined the relationship between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)- based thalamic nuclei volumes and mismatch negativity (MMN), a purported index of prediction error signaling known to be impaired in psychosis., Methods: We obtained MRI and MMN using a roving paradigm from individuals with SCZ spectrum disorder (SSD, n = 60) or bipolar disorder (BD, n = 69) and HC (n = 252). We segmented volumes of 25 thalamic nuclei bilaterally and tested their associations with MMN amplitude using linear models while covarying for age, sex, diagnosis, and intracranial volumes (ICV)., Results: We did not find group differences in thalamic volumes that could account for differences in MMN, neither did we find significant volume × diagnosis interactions on MMN for any of the 25 nuclei examined. Across the whole sample, significant positive associations were found between MMN amplitude and the volumes of several higher-order thalamic nuclei, including the mediodorsal medial and lateral nuclei, anterior and medial pulvinar, nucleus reuniens, as well as the lateral geniculate nucleus., Conclusion: The results demonstrate a positive association between MMN amplitude and volumes of thalamic association nuclei in patients with psychotic disorders and HC. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental conditions that share genetic etiology and frequently co-occur. Given this comorbidity and well-established clinical heterogeneity, identifying individuals with similar brain signatures may be valuable for predicting clinical outcomes and tailoring treatment strategies. Cortical myelination is a prominent developmental process, and its disruption is a candidate mechanism for both disorders. Yet, no studies have attempted to identify subtypes using T1w/T2w-ratio, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based proxy for intracortical myelin. Moreover, cortical variability arises from numerous biological pathways, and multimodal approaches can integrate cortical metrics into a single network. We analyzed data from 310 individuals aged 2.6-23.6 years, obtained from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental (POND) Network consisting of individuals diagnosed with ASD (n = 136), ADHD (n = 100), and typically developing (TD) individuals (n = 74). We first tested for differences in T1w/T2w-ratio between diagnostic categories and controls. We then performed unimodal (T1w/T2w-ratio) and multimodal (T1w/T2w-ratio, cortical thickness, and surface area) spectral clustering to identify diagnostic-blind subgroups. Linear models revealed no statistically significant case-control differences in T1w/T2w-ratio. Unimodal clustering mostly isolated single individual- or minority clusters, driven by image quality and intensity outliers. Multimodal clustering suggested three distinct subgroups, which transcended diagnostic boundaries, showing separate cortical patterns but similar clinical and cognitive profiles. T1w/T2w-ratio features were the most relevant for demarcation, followed by surface area. Previous studies have suggested that alterations in white matter (WM) microstructure are implicated in suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STBs). However, findings of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have been inconsistent. In this large-scale mega-analysis conducted by the ENIGMA Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours (ENIGMA-STB) consortium, we examined WM alterations associated with STBs. Data processing was standardised across sites, and resulting WM microstructure measures (fractional anisotropy, axial diffusivity, mean diffusivity and radial diffusivity) for 25 WM tracts were pooled across 40 cohorts. We compared these measures among individuals with a psychiatric diagnosis and lifetime history of suicide attempt ( n =652; mean age=35.4±14.7; female=71.8%), individuals with a psychiatric diagnosis but no STB (i.e., clinical controls; n =1871; mean age=34±14.8; female=59.8%), and individuals with no mental disorder diagnosis and no STB (i.e., healthy controls; n =642; mean age=29.6±13.1; female=62.9%). We also compared these measures among individuals with recent suicidal ideation ( n =714; mean age=36.3±15.3; female=66.1%), clinical controls ( n =1184; mean age=36.8±15.6; female=63.1%), and healthy controls ( n =1240; mean age= 31.6±15.5; female=61.0%). We found subtle but statistically significant effects, such as lower fractional anisotropy associated with a history of suicide attempt, over and above the effect of psychiatric diagnoses. These effects were strongest in the corona radiata, thalamic radiation, fornix/stria terminalis, corpus callosum and superior longitudinal fasciculus. Effect sizes were small (Cohen's d < 0.25). Recent suicidal ideation was not associated with alterations in WM microstructure. This large-scale coordinated mega-analysis revealed subtle regional and global alterations in WM microstructure in individuals with a history of suicide attempt. The caudate nucleus is a part of the striatum, and striatal hyperdopaminergia is considered central to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. How caudate volume is affected in schizophrenia and what role antipsychotics play remains unclear. In early-onset schizophrenia (EOS), where psychosis emerges during a neurodevelopmentally critical phase, the caudate may exhibit a heightened vulnerability to the effects of antipsychotic medications. We hypothesized effects of both antipsychotic medication use and age of onset on caudate in schizophrenia. We included adult patients with EOS (n = 83) and adult-onset schizophrenia (AOS) (n = 246), adult healthy controls (HC, n = 774), adolescent patients with non-affective psychosis (n = 56) and adolescent HC (n = 97). We obtained T1-weighted MRI scans using a 1.5T Siemens scanner and General Electric 3T scanners. In our main analysis, we tested for main and interaction effects of diagnosis and current antipsychotic medication use on caudate volume. Adult patients with EOS (p < 0.001) and AOS (p = 0.002) had both larger caudate than HC. Age of onset (EOS/AOS) interacted with antipsychotic use (p = 0.004) which was associated with larger caudate in EOS (p < 0.001) but not in AOS (p = 0.654). Conversely, among medicated patients only, EOS had larger caudate than AOS (p < 0.001). No other subcortical structures showed differences between medicated EOS and AOS. Medicated adolescent patients with non-affective psychosis and medicated adult patients with EOS showed similar caudate volumes. The results may indicate a schizophrenia-related and a medication-induced caudate increase, the latter restricted to patients with EOS and possibly occurring already in adolescence shortly after disease onset., (© 2024. Despite the remarkable efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), long-term stability remains the primary barrier to their commercialization. The prospect of enhancing stability by substituting organic transport layers with suitable inorganic compounds, particularly Cu-based inorganic hole-transport materials (HTMs), holds promise due to their high valence band maximum (VBM) aligning with perovskite characteristics. This review assesses the advantages and disadvantages of these five types of Cu-based HTMs. Although Cu-based binary oxides and chalcogenides face narrow bandgap issues, the "chemical modulation of the valence band" (CMVB) strategy has successfully broadened the bandgap for Cu-based ternary oxides and chalcogenides. However, Cu-based ternary oxides encounter challenges with low mobility, and Cu-based ternary chalcogenides face mismatches in VBM alignment with perovskites. Cu-based binary halides, especially CuI, exhibit excellent properties such as wider bandgap, high mobility, and defect tolerance, but their stability remains a concern. These limitations of single anion compounds are insightfully discussed, offering solutions from the perspective of practical application. Future research can focus on Cu-based composite anion compounds, which merge the advantages of single anion compounds. In a subset of females, postmenopausal status has been linked to accelerated aging and neurological decline. A complex interplay between reproductive-related factors, mental disorders, and genetics may influence brain function and accelerate the rate of aging in the postmenopausal phase. Using multiple regressions corrected for age, in this preregistered study we investigated the associations between menopause-related factors (i.e., menopausal status, menopause type, age at menopause, and reproductive span) and proxies of cellular aging (leukocyte telomere length, LTL) and brain aging (white and gray matter brain age gap, BAG) in 13,780 females from the UK Biobank (age range 39-82). We then determined how these proxies of aging were associated with each other, and evaluated the effects of menopause-related factors, history of depression (= lifetime broad depression), and APOE ε4 genotype on BAG and LTL, examining both additive and interactive relationships. We found that postmenopausal status and older age at natural menopause were linked to longer LTL and lower BAG. Surgical menopause and longer natural reproductive span were also associated with longer LTL. BAG and LTL were not significantly associated with each other. The greatest variance in each proxy of biological aging was most consistently explained by models with the addition of both lifetime broad depression and APOE ε4 genotype. Overall, this study demonstrates a complex interplay between menopause-related factors, lifetime broad depression, APOE ε4 genotype, and proxies of biological aging. However, results are potentially influenced by a disproportionate number of healthier participants among postmenopausal females.
