This article examines the influence of social media posts on clinical trials involving stem cell–based interventions. Based on the literature review, we identified three potential risks associated with social media posts regarding clinical trials that involve stem cell–based interventions: (1) threats to scientific validity, (2) amplification of excessive expectations, and (3) breaches of confidentiality. Additionally, preliminary recommendations are provided to safeguard the value of stem cell clinical trials for future patients in the age of social media. Our approach aims to safeguard the well-being of forthcoming participants and ensure the scientific validity of stem cell research, as well as possibly aid in the further development of shared guidelines for posting stem cell clinical trial information on social media platforms.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a deadly congenital heart disease that arises when the left ventricle and outflow tract fail to develop appropriately, inhibiting the adequate perfusion of the rest of the body. Historically, this disease has been treated via a series of surgeries that allows the heart to use a single ventricle. These surgeries are often a palliative measure, and heart transplantation is the only definitive therapy that exists for this condition. It has been hypothesized that stem cell-based regenerative therapies could have a role in promoting cardiac tissue regeneration in HLHS patients who are undergoing palliative surgery. Several clinical trials have demonstrated that introducing pluripotent cells into the heart is safe, feasible, and capable of improving right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF). However, while these approaches show great promise, there is still room for development. There is a substantial body of pre-clinical work that is focused on generating increasingly large and complex pieces of cardiac tissue in the form of cardiac patches, with the idea that these could be used to rebuild and strengthen the heart in a robust and long-lasting manner. ABSTRACT Neural transplantation is a promising strategy for restoring dopaminergic dysfunction and modifying disease progression in Parkinson's disease (PD). Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are a potential resource in this regard because of their ability to provide a virtually limitless supply of homogenous dopaminergic progenitors and neurons of appropriate lineage. The recent advances in developing robust cell culture protocols for directed differentiation of hESCs to near pure populations of ventral mesencephalic (A9-type) dopaminergic neurons has heightened the prospects for PD cell therapy. Here, we focus our review on current state-of-the-art techniques for harnessing hESC-based strategies toward development of a stem cell therapeutic for PD. Importantly, we also briefly describe a novel genetic-programming approach that may address many of the key challenges that remain in the field and that may hasten clinical translation. J. Comp.
