The stellar occultation technique is capable of atmospheric trace gas detection using the molecule absorption characteristics of the stellar spectra. In this paper, the non-iterative and iterative retrieval methods for oxygen and air density detection by stellar occultation are investigated. For the single-band average transmission data in the oxygen 761 nm A-band, an onion-peeling algorithm is used to calculate the effective optical depth of each atmospheric layer, and then the optical depth is used to retrieve the oxygen number density. The iteration method introduces atmospheric hydrostatic equilibrium and the ideal gas equation of state, and it achieves a more accurate retrieval of the air density under the condition of a priori temperature deviation. Finally, this paper analyzes the double solution problem in the iteration process and the ideas to improve the problem. We use the extensive stellar occultation data set of the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph aboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft to determine the first quantification of vertical variation in O2 mole fraction separately for day and night in the ∼90–130 km altitude range. The upper atmospheric O2 variation is expected to be due to the interplay between diffusion and advection because of its long photochemical lifetime. It is therefore a useful tracer of the state of atmospheric mixing and circulation. The altitude‐averaged mixing ratio is measured to be 2.69(±0.03) × 10−3 for the nightside and 2.05(±0.03) × 10−3 for the dayside. The average O2 mole fraction for day and night are nearly identical below 105 km, consistent with the value of 1.61 × 10−3 derived from the Mars Curiosity Rover/Sample Analysis at Mars near‐surface measurements. At higher altitudes, dominated by molecular diffusive separation, the measured O2 mole fraction demonstrates a vertical gradient with a local time dependence. The nightside mole fraction is a factor of 1.37 ± 0.04 larger than the dayside value at ∼125 km. This nightside enhancement is explained in terms of the relative role of solar‐driven rapid horizontal winds at high altitudes and slower vertical diffusion, resulting in a nightside (dayside) downward (upward) diffusive flux. Using the 1‐D diffusion model, the measured profiles correspond to a vertical eddy diffusion coefficient K = 3.5(±1.5) × 106 cm2/s. The Mars Climate Database predicts comparable but lower day‐night differences in oxygen mole fraction due to an overestimated K = 7.0(±1.0) × 106 cm2/s, which affects atmospheric mixing as well as the rate of atmospheric escape to space. In order to improve the inversion accuracy of stellar occultation data and to provide a reference for the selection of inversion methods with higher accuracy in the future, this study compared and analyzed the inversion effects of two different methods on the same set of data, which are the effective cross-section method and the onion-peeling method, respectively. Firstly, the inversion principle of the effective cross-section method is introduced in detail. The regularisation parameters and screening conditions for the observation data in the inversion process were clarified based on the ozone observation characteristics. Second, the algorithm was applied to invert the GOMOS observational data from 1 December 2002. The atmospheric radiative transmittance obtained from the observations was filtered, and the inversion results were compared with those obtained using the onion-peeling method. Third, the errors in the height distribution obtained by both methods were calculated using the GOMOS secondary results from 1 December 2002 as the reference value. Finally, the inversion errors of other trace components were computed to further validate the accuracy of the two methods. The results demonstrate that the effective cross-sectional method is more accurate for the inversion of ozone, particularly in low-altitude regions affected by refraction. The method achieved a maximum error of 1.2%, with an apparent magnitude of 2, an effective temperature greater than 10,000 K, and a regularisation parameter of 1015. Furthermore, when applying the same method to the inversion of nitrogen trioxide and calculating the error, it was observed that the results of both methods were comparable at altitude of 30–60 km, with an error value ranging from 0 to 2%. However, at approximately 25 km, the inversion accuracy of the onion-peeling method surpassed that of the effective cross-sectional method. Stellar occultation instruments detect the transmission of stellar spectra through the planetary atmosphere to retrieve densities of various atmospheric components. This paper introduces an idea of using instruments with bandpass filters for stellar occultation detection. According to the characteristics of the occultation technique for oxygen density measurement, a full-link forward model is established, and the average transmission under a typical nocturnal atmosphere is calculated with the help of the HITRAN database, occultation simulation and a 3D ray-tracing program. The central wavelength and bandwidth suitable for 760 nm oxygen A-band absorption measurement are discussed. This paper also compares the results of the forward model with GOMOS spectrometer data under this band, calculates the observation signal-to-noise ratio corresponding to different instrument parameters, and target star magnitudes. The results of this paper provide a theoretical basis for the development of a stellar occultation technique with a bandpass filter and guidance on the instrument design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gaussian process (GP) regression is a nonparametric Bayesian approach that has been used successfully in various astronomical domains, especially in time-domain astronomy. The most common applications are the smoothing of data for interpolation and the detection of periodicities. The ability to create unbiased data-driven models without a predefined physical model can be a major advantage over conventional regression methods. Prior knowledge can be included by setting boundary conditions or constraining hyperparameter values, while unknown hyperparameters are optimized during the conditioning of the model. We have adapted and transformed previous approaches of GP regression and introduce three new applications for this regression method, especially in the context of stellar occultations: the modeling of occultation light curves, the correction of public JPL ephemerides of minor planets based on publicly available image data of the Zwicky Transient Facility, and the detection of natural satellites. We used data from observations of stellar occultations to validate the models and achieved promising results in all cases, and thus we confirmed the flexibility of GP regression models. Considering various existing use cases in addition to our novel applications, GP regression can be used to model diverse data sets addressing a wide range of problems. The accuracy of the model depends on the input data and on the set boundary conditions. Generally, high-quality data allow the usage of loose boundary conditions, while low-quality data require more restrictive boundary conditions to avoid overfitting.

Ultraviolet spectroscopy is a powerful method to study planetary surface composition through reflectance measurements, atmospheric composition through stellar/solar occultations, transits of other planetary bodies, and direct imaging of airglow and auroral emissions. The next generation of ultraviolet spectrographs (UVS) on board ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer and NASA’s Europa Clipper missions will perform such measurements of Jupiter and its moons in the early 2030s. This work presents a compilation of a detailed UV stellar catalog, named Catalog of Ultraviolet Bright Stars (CUBS), of targets with high intensity in the 50–210 nm wavelength range with applications relevant to planetary spectroscopy. These applications include (1) planning and simulating occultations, including calibration measurements; (2) modeling starlight illumination of dark, nightside planetary surfaces primarily lit by the sky; and (3) studying the origin of diffuse Galactic UV light as mapped by existing data sets from Juno-UVS and others. CUBS includes observations from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and additional information from the SIMBAD database. We have constructed model spectra at 0.1 nm resolution for almost 90,000 targets using interpolated Kurucz models (which have a resolution of 1 nm) and, when available, IUE spectra. CUBS also includes robust checks for agreement between the Kurucz models and the IUE data. We also present a tool for which our catalog can be used to identify the best candidates for stellar occultation observations, with applications for any UV instrument. We report on our methods for producing CUBS and discuss plans for its implementation during ongoing and upcoming planetary missions.

Atmospheric stellar occultation observation technology is an advanced space-based detection technology that can measure the vertical distribution of trace gas composition, temperature, and aerosol content in a planet’s atmosphere. In this study, an inversion algorithm of the onion-peeling method was constructed to invert the transmittance obtained from the forward mask. The method used a three-dimensional ray-tracing simulation to obtain the transmission path of the light in the Earth’s atmosphere. The relevant parameters were then combined in the high-resolution transmission molecular absorption (HITRAN) database, and line-by-line integration was performed to calculate the atmospheric transmittance. The transmittance value was then used as an input to calculate the vertical distribution of oxygen molecules when using the single-wavelength inversion of the onion-peeling method. Finally, the oxygen molecule content was compared with the value attained by the Mass Spectrometer and Incoherent Scatter Radar Extended (MSISE00) atmospheric model to determine the relative error of our model. The maximum error was found to be 0.3%, which is low enough to verify the reliability of our algorithm. Using Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) measured data to invert the oxygen number density, we calculated its relative deviation from the published result to further verify the algorithm. The inversion result was affected by factors such as prior data, the absorption spectral line type, the ellipticity of the Earth, and the accuracy of the orbit. Analysis of these error-influencing factors showed that the seasons and the Earth’s ellipticity affected the accuracy of the model only 0.001% and could therefore be ignored. However, latitude and solar activity had a greater impact on accuracy, on the order of 0.1%. The absorption line type affected the accuracy of the model by as much as 1%. All three of these factors therefore need to be considered during the inversion process.

In this study, we analyze the accuracy of the stellar occultation technique to detect the oxygen number density and temperature in near space. Based on the validation of the algorithm related to stellar occultation using a single wavelength of 762 nm, the simulation and inversion are performed using the oxygen absorption A-band, and the results are compared with SABER observations to calculate the deviation. Then, the distribution of the detection accuracy with wavelength, latitude, and altitude is analyzed. The results show that the radiant transmittance of the basic observation varies significantly with wavelength and altitude, and it is not sensitive to a change of latitude. The inversion results of each wavelength at different latitudes can be combined, and it can be seen that the 754–769 nm band is preferred for oxygen and temperature detection. Therefore, analyzing the accuracy results of the specific wavelength 757.84 nm at different latitudes, the temperature accuracy can reach 0.1 K in the stratosphere at both low and high latitudes and 0.6–34 K at middle latitudes. The temperature detection accuracy in the mesosphere at each latitude reaches about a dozen K. The deviation of the inversion results at middle latitudes is larger in the thermosphere, and at the other two latitudes, it is about a few dozen K. From the analysis of relative deviation, excluding the deviation of 95–100 km, the deviation of other altitudes is within the ideal range, and the minimum can reach 0. The accuracy of the oxygen number density increases with latitude, and the relative deviation of the middle and high latitudes is around 10–20%. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the technique of starlight occultation exhibits high accuracy for detecting atmospheric parameters in the near space region, and the results lay the technical foundation for the independent development of stellar occultation. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of stellar occultation events. Using 10 target star sources, the influence of orbital elements on the number, duration, and distribution of stellar occultation events was simulated and analyzed, and the constellation configuration was designed. The results showed the following points: (1) the orbital inclination had the greatest influence on the number of occultation events, with obvious upward and downward trends in the range of 10–40° and 150–180°, and the amount of occultation data remained at about 303 times under the other angle conditions. The orbital height had an effect on the number of occultations, but the amplitude was small. (2) The use of four orbits had an impact on the occultation duration. The duration decreased with an increase in the orbit height and inclination, the distribution was symmetrical with the perigee angular distance, and it increased with an increase in the ascending intersection right ascension. (3) The higher the orbital height, the less comprehensive the longitudinal and latitudinal distribution of occultation events. With an orbital inclination of less than 150°, the greatest occultation event was covered to encompass the entire world. The other two orbital elements had negligible effects on the longitudinal and latitudinal distribution of occultation events. (4) The elevation of the occultation event increased with an increase in the orbital altitude, but the azimuth showed no obvious change trends. A considerable number of normal occultations can be obtained with an orbital inclination of less than 120°. The other two orbital elements had a negligible effect on the distribution of altitude and azimuth of occultation events. A stellar occultation constellation configuration was designed based on the simulation results, and the results showed that the following parameters of satellites can be used to realize the global distribution of occultation events: orbital height of 500 km, orbital inclination of 97.3771°, perigee angular distance of 40°, and ascending node right ascension steps of 40°. This configuration will ensure that an adequate number of normal occultations are obtained, which will ensure the quality of data inversion under the condition of 152 infrared target star sources. An altitude profile of Nitric Oxide (NO) in the 80–110 km altitude range was measured in the polar night from a sounding rocket on 27 January 2020. The observations were made using the technique of stellar occultation with a UV spectrograph observing the γ (1,0) band of NO near 215 nm. The tangent point for the altitude profile was at 74° latitude, a location that had been in darkness for 80 days. The retrieved slant column density profile is interpreted using an assumed four‐parameter analytic profile shape. Retrievals of the fitting parameters yield a profile with a peak NO concentration of 2.2 ± 0.7 × 108 cm−3 at 93.5 ± 4.1 km. The observations were made during a time of minimum solar and geomagnetic activity. The NO maximum retrieved from the rocket profile is significantly larger in abundance and lower in altitude than other observations on the same day at nearby latitudes just outside the polar night. These rocket‐borne results are consistent with NO that is created over the course over the polar winter and is confined to high latitudes in the polar night by the mesospheric polar vortex. During the course of that confinement the abundance increases due to the lack of photodissociation, allowing the NO to descend. We show that the observed descent can be explained by eddy diffusion‐driven transport, though vertical advection cannot be ruled out. Plain Language Summary: A sounding rocket is used to obtain an altitude profile of Nitric Oxide (NO) in the polar night. The measurement is performed by observing the attenuation of light from a star by NO. The location of the observation had been in darkness for 80 days. This long duration is important because in the absence of sunlight, NO lasts longer in the atmosphere and therefore has more time to grow to a greater abundance and to descend to lower altitudes. We find that the observed polar night NO is larger in abundance than most previous observations of NO outside the polar night, even though the level of solar activity which creates NO was at a minimum. We also find that the maximum NO density is observed at a lower altitude than many previous measurements. We show that the observed descent of NO is consistent with that caused by turbulent mixing in the atmosphere, though we cannot rule out the possible role of vertical winds. The satellite Mimas launches a bending wave – a warping of the rings that propagates radially through self-gravity – at the 5:3 inner vertical resonance with Saturn's rings. We present a modification of the linear bending wave theory (Shu et al., 1983) which includes the effects of satellite self-gravity wakes on the particles in the wave. We show that, when treated as rigid, these wakes generate an extra layer of particles whose number density is proportional to the magnitude of the slope of the warped ring. Using a ray-tracing code we compare our predictions with those of Shu et al. (1983) and with 60 stellar occultations observed by the Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) and find that the extra layer of particles of our perturbed bending wave model has a considerable explanatory power for the UVIS dataset. Our best model explains the most discrepant and surprising features of the Mimas 5:3 bending wave; the enhancement of the signal for the cases of occultations with high ring opening angle and the bigger-than-expected viscosity, ν = 576 cm2/s, which is more than double the viscosity computed from density waves (Tiscareno et al., 2007). This shows that self-gravity wakes can be effective at transporting angular momentum in a vertically perturbed disk. Relative to neighboring density waves (Tiscareno et al., 2007), we find a lower-than-expected value for the surface mass density, σ = 36.7 g/cm2, which suggests that the enhanced viscous interactions may be transporting material into the surrounding regions. • Modified wave theory matches the Cassini data significantly better than previous attempts. • Extra layer of particles explains most discrepant aspects between previous theory and data. • Bending waves enhances local viscosity up to a factor of 5, this can have secular dynamical effects. • The local viscosity enhancement occurs due to the self-gravity wake-bending wave interaction. • The obtained surface mass density is smaller than others in the region, suggesting mass transport. A stellar occultation of Gaia DR3 2646598228351156352 by the Centaur (2060) Chiron was observed from the South African Astronomical Observatory on 2018 November 28 UT. Here we present a positive detection of material surrounding Chiron from the 74-inch telescope for this event. Additionally, a global atmosphere is ruled out at the tens of microbars level for several possible atmospheric compositions. There are multiple 3 σ drops in the 74-inch light curve: three during immersion and two during emersion. Occulting material is located between 242 and 270 km from the center of the nucleus in the sky plane. Assuming the ring-plane orientation proposed for Chiron from the 2011 occultation, the flux drops are located at 352, 344, and 316 km (immersion) and 357 and 364 km (emersion) from the center, with normal optical depths of 0.26, 0.36, and 0.22 (immersion) and 0.26 and 0.18 (emersion) and equivalent widths between 0.7 and 1.3 km. This detection is similar to the previously proposed two-ring system and is located within the error bars of that ring-pole plane; however, the normal optical depths are less than half of the previous values, and three features are detected on immersion. These results suggest that the properties of the surrounding material have evolved between the 2011, 2018, and 2022 observations.

Occultations provide indirect sensitivity to the number density of small Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) too faint to directly detect telescopically. We present results from the Caltech HI-speed Multicolor camERA (CHIMERA) survey with the Palomar Hale Telescope, which monitored stars over the central $5^{\prime} \times 5^{\prime} $ of the M22 globular cluster along the ecliptic plane for serendipitous occultations by kilometer-scale KBOs over 63 hr across 24 nights at a 33 Hz frame rate simultaneously in $i^{\prime} $ and $g^{\prime} $ . We adapted dense-field photometry and occultation template fitting techniques to this data set, finding a 95% confidence upper limit on the occultation rate, corresponding to an ecliptic sky density of ≲10 ^7 deg ^−2 of >1 km diameter classical KBOs. We discuss a few of the occultation-like light curve signatures at the edge of the sensitivity limit responsible for setting the upper bounds, and their likely nonviability as true occultations.

Measurements made by the Voyager 2 spacecraft during its flybys of Uranus in 1986 found warm stratospheric and hot thermospheric temperatures that cannot be explained by solar energy alone. It contributes to what has become known as the “giant planet energy crisis”; there is a fundamental lack of understanding of the energy balance of giant planets in the solar system. Uranus, in particular, has both the hottest thermospheric temperatures and the weakest internal heat flux of all four giant planets. Moreover, the Voyager 2 UV temperature measurements are at odds with the many contemporaneous Earth-based stellar occultation observations. In this work, we examine the 1977 Uranus stellar occultation (U0) and compare the observed light curve to reported Voyager 2 temperature profiles by simulating the latter into stellar occultation light curves. In this investigation, we find that the observed light curves are in tension with the simulated light curves to a high degree of statistical confidence. Next, we reprocess the U0 light curves using a modern approach, with some significant adjustments described herein, and report updated profiles. We find that the lower thermosphere of Uranus is much cooler than the Voyager 2 profiles suggest but slightly warmer than those originally published from the U0 occultation. In Paper II, we will present the results of applying these methods to many of the dozens of archival Uranus stellar occultations.

We report the serendipitous discovery of Gaia17bpp/2MASS J19372316+1759029, a binary star with a deep single large-amplitude dimming event of ∼4.5 mag that lasted over 6.5 yr. Using the optical-to-IR spectral energy distribution (SED), we constrain the primary star to be a cool giant M0III star with effective temperature T _eff = 3850 K and radius R = 58 R _⊙ . Based on the SED fitting, we obtained a bimodal posterior distribution of primary stellar masses with a stronger preference for a 1.5 M _⊙ mass star. Within the last 66 yr of photometric coverage, no other significant dimming events of this depth and duration were identified in the optical light curves. Using a Gaussian process, we fit a generalized Gaussian distribution to the optical and IR light curves and conclude that the dimming event exhibits moderate asymmetries from optical to IR. At the minimum of the dimming event, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer color (W1–W2) differed by ∼0.2 mag relative to the primary star color outside the dimming event. The ingress and egress colors show a shallow reddening profile. We suggest that the main culprit of the dimming event is likely due to the presence of a large, optically thick disk transiting the primary giant star. By fitting a monochromatic transit model of an oblate disk transiting a star, we found good agreement with a slow-moving (0.005 km s ^−1 ) disk with a ∼1.4 au radius. We propose that Gaia17bpp belongs to a rare binary star population similar to the ϵ Aurigae system, which consists of a secondary star enshrouded by an optically thick debris disk.

In this study, we analyze the accuracy of the stellar occultation technique to detect the oxygen number density and temperature in near space. Based on the validation of the algorithm related to stellar occultation using a single wavelength of 762 nm, the simulation and inversion are performed using the oxygen absorption A-band, and the results are compared with SABER observations to calculate the deviation. Then, the distribution of the detection accuracy with wavelength, latitude, and altitude is analyzed. The results show that the radiant transmittance of the basic observation varies significantly with wavelength and altitude, and it is not sensitive to a change of latitude. The inversion results of each wavelength at different latitudes can be combined, and it can be seen that the 754–769 nm band is preferred for oxygen and temperature detection. Therefore, analyzing the accuracy results of the specific wavelength 757.84 nm at different latitudes, the temperature accuracy can reach 0.1 K in the stratosphere at both low and high latitudes and 0.6–34 K at middle latitudes. The temperature detection accuracy in the mesosphere at each latitude reaches about a dozen K. The deviation of the inversion results at middle latitudes is larger in the thermosphere, and at the other two latitudes, it is about a few dozen K. From the analysis of relative deviation, excluding the deviation of 95–100 km, the deviation of other altitudes is within the ideal range, and the minimum can reach 0. The accuracy of the oxygen number density increases with latitude, and the relative deviation of the middle and high latitudes is around 10–20%. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the technique of starlight occultation exhibits high accuracy for detecting atmospheric parameters in the near space region, and the results lay the technical foundation for the independent development of stellar occultation.

This study provides an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of stellar occultation events. Using 10 target star sources, the influence of orbital elements on the number, duration, and distribution of stellar occultation events was simulated and analyzed, and the constellation configuration was designed. The results showed the following points: (1) the orbital inclination had the greatest influence on the number of occultation events, with obvious upward and downward trends in the range of 10–40° and 150–180°, and the amount of occultation data remained at about 303 times under the other angle conditions. The orbital height had an effect on the number of occultations, but the amplitude was small. (2) The use of four orbits had an impact on the occultation duration. The duration decreased with an increase in the orbit height and inclination, the distribution was symmetrical with the perigee angular distance, and it increased with an increase in the ascending intersection right ascension. (3) The higher the orbital height, the less comprehensive the longitudinal and latitudinal distribution of occultation events. With an orbital inclination of less than 150°, the greatest occultation event was covered to encompass the entire world. The other two orbital elements had negligible effects on the longitudinal and latitudinal distribution of occultation events. (4) The elevation of the occultation event increased with an increase in the orbital altitude, but the azimuth showed no obvious change trends. A considerable number of normal occultations can be obtained with an orbital inclination of less than 120°. The other two orbital elements had a negligible effect on the distribution of altitude and azimuth of occultation events. A stellar occultation constellation configuration was designed based on the simulation results, and the results showed that the following parameters of satellites can be used to realize the global distribution of occultation events: orbital height of 500 km, orbital inclination of 97.3771°, perigee angular distance of 40°, and ascending node right ascension steps of 40°. This configuration will ensure that an adequate number of normal occultations are obtained, which will ensure the quality of data inversion under the condition of 152 infrared target star sources.

In 2019, the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network (RECON) obtained multiple-chord occultation measurements of two Centaur objects: 2014 YY _49 on 2019 January 28 and 2013 NL _24 on 2019 September 4. RECON is a citizen-science telescope network designed to observe high-uncertainty occultations by outer solar system objects. Adopting circular models for the object profiles, we derive a radius $r={16}_{-1}^{+2}$ km and a geometric albedo ${p}_{V}={0.13}_{-0.024}^{+0.015}$ for 2014 YY _49 and a radius $r={66}_{-5}^{+5}$ km and a geometric albedo ${p}_{V}={0.045}_{-0.008}^{+0.006}$ for 2013 NL _24 . To the precision of these measurements, no atmosphere or rings are detected for either object. The two objects measured here are among the smallest distant objects measured with the stellar occultation technique. In addition to these geometric constraints, the occultation measurements provide astrometric constraints for these two Centaurs at a higher precision than has been feasible by direct imaging. To supplement the occultation results, we also present an analysis of color photometry from the Pan-STARRS surveys to constrain the rotational light curve amplitudes and spectral colors of these two Centaurs. We recommend that future work focus on photometry to more deliberately constrain the objects’ colors and light curve amplitudes and on follow-on occultation efforts informed by this astrometry.

Distant objects in the solar system are crucial to better understand the history and evolution of its outskirts. The stellar occultation technique allows the determination of their sizes and shapes with kilometric accuracy, a detailed investigation of their immediate vicinities, as well as the detection of tenuous atmospheres. The prediction of such events is a key point in this study, and yet accurate enough predictions are available to a handful of objects only. In this work, we briefly discuss the dramatic impact that both the astrometry from the Gaia space mission and the deep sky surveys – the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope in particular – will have on the prediction of stellar occultations and how they may influence the future of the study of distant small solar system bodies through this technique.
