We present JWST/NIRSpec prism spectroscopy of MACS0647−JD, a triply lensed z ∼ 11 candidate discovered in Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spatially resolved by JWST imaging into two components, A and B. Spectroscopy of component A yields a spectroscopic redshift z = 10.17 based on seven detected emission lines: C iii ] λ λ 1907, 1909, [O ii ] λ 3727, [Ne iii ] λ 3869, [Ne iii ] λ 3968, H δ λ 4101, H γ λ 4340, and [O iii ] λ 4363. These are the second-most distant detections of these emission lines to date, in a galaxy observed just 460 million years after the Big Bang. Based on observed and extrapolated line flux ratios we derive a gas-phase metallicity 12 + log(O/H) ∼ 7.5–8.0, or Z ∼ (0.06–0.2) Z ⊙, ionization parameter log (U) = −1.9 ± 0.2, and an ionizing photon production efficiency log (ξ ion) = 25.2 ± 0.2 erg−1 Hz. The spectrum has a softened Ly α break, evidence for a strong Ly α damping wing. The Ly α damping wing also suppresses the F150W photometry, explaining the slightly overestimated photometric redshift z = 10.6 ± 0.3. MACS0647−JD has a stellar mass log(M / M ⊙) = 8.1 ± 0.3, including ∼6 × 107 M ⊙ in component A, most of which formed recently (within ∼20 Myr) with a star formation rate ∼ 2 ± 1 M ⊙ yr−1, all within an effective radius 70 ± 24 pc. Spectroscopy of a fainter companion galaxy C separated by a distance of ∼ 3 kpc reveals a Lyman break consistent with z ∼ 10.17. MACS0647−JD is likely the most distant galaxy merger known. We present the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry and high-resolution spectra of the EL CVn-type systems, which consists of an A/F-type main-sequence (MS) star and a hotter low-mass helium white dwarf precursor (pre-He WD). In the spectral analysis, double-lined radial velocities (RVs) were obtained for the first time. From a simultaneous analysis of the TESS light and RV curves, the masses, radii, and temperatures of each component were determined. We applied multiple frequency analyses to the residual light curve after subtracting the binarity effects and detected independent frequencies. We found that the low-frequency region's frequencies resembled those of |$\delta$|  Sct-type stars, while the high-frequency region's frequencies (100–300 d |$^{-1}$|⁠) likely correspond to pre-He WD components. According to our research, we found that in nine systems, the primary star with higher mass showed pulsation characteristics similar to a |$\delta$| -Sct-type. In only three systems, the hotter secondary components consisted of a pre-He WD with high-frequency pulsations. We examine the purity of pre-He WD instability strip by studying several EL CVn-type systems. Additionally, we propose new boundaries for the empirical instability strips of pre-He WDs. Combining the public JWST /NIRCam imaging programs CEERS, PRIMER, and JADES, spanning a total area of |$\sim 500\, {\rm arcmin}^2$|⁠ , we obtain a sample of |$\gt $| 30 000 galaxies at |$z_{\rm phot}\sim 4\!-\!9$| that allows us to perform a complete, rest-optical-selected census of the galaxy population at |$z\gt 3$|⁠. Comparing the stellar mass |$M_*$| and the UV-slope |$\beta$| distributions between JWST - and HST -selected samples, we generally find very good agreement and no significant biases. Nevertheless, JWST enables us to probe a new population of UV-red galaxies that was missing from previous HST -based Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) samples. We measure galaxy stellar mass functions (SMFs) at |$z\sim 4\!-\!9$| down to limiting masses of |$10^{7.5}\!-\!10^{8.5}\, {\rm M_\odot }$|⁠ , finding steep low-mass slopes over the entire redshift range, reaching values of |$\alpha \approx -2$| at |$z\gtrsim 6$|⁠. At the high-mass end, UV-red galaxies dominate at least out to |$z\sim 6$|⁠. The implied redshift evolution of the SMF suggests a rapid build-up of massive dust-obscured or quiescent galaxies from |$z\sim 6$| to |$z\sim 4$| as well as an enhanced efficiency of star formation towards earlier times (⁠|$z\gtrsim 6$|⁠). Finally, we show that the galaxy mass density grows by a factor |$\sim 20\times$| from |$z\sim 9$| to |$z\sim 4$|⁠. Our results emphasize the importance of rest-frame optically selected samples in inferring accurate distributions of physical properties and studying the mass build-up of galaxies in the first 1.5 Gyr of cosmic history. In recent years, there has been a push to understand how chemical composition affects the magnetic activity levels of main sequence low-mass stars. Results indicate that more metal-rich stars are more magnetically active for a given stellar mass and rotation period. This metallicity dependence has implications for how the rotation periods and activity levels of low-mass stars evolve over their lifetimes. Numerical modelling suggests that at late ages more metal-rich stars should be rotating more slowly and be more magnetically active. In this work, we study the rotation and activity evolution of low-mass stars using a sample of Kepler field stars. We use the gyro-kinematic age dating technique to estimate ages for our sample and use the photometric activity index as our proxy for magnetic activity. We find clear evidence that, at late ages, more metal-rich stars have spun down to slower rotation in agreement with the theoretical modelling. However, further investigation is required to definitively determine whether the magnetic activity evolution occurs in a metallicity dependent way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent observations have demonstrated that some subsets of even moderately wide-separation planet-hosting binaries are preferentially configured such that planetary and binary orbits appear to lie within the same plane. In this work, we explore dissipation during the protoplanetary disk phase, induced by disk warping as the system is forced into nodal recession by an inclined binary companion as a possible avenue of achieving orbit–orbit alignment. We analytically model the coupled evolution of the disk angular momentum vector and stellar spin vector under the influence of a distant binary companion. We find that a population of systems with random initial orientations can appear detectably more aligned after undergoing dissipative precession, and that this process can simultaneously produce an obliquity distribution that is consistent with observations. While dissipative precession proceeds efficiently in close binaries, favorable system properties (e.g., r out ≳ 100 au, α ≳ 0.05, and/or M b / M * ≳ 1) are required to reproduce observed alignment trends at wider binary separations a b ≳ 450 au. Our framework further predicts that circum-primary planets in systems with high stellar mass ratios should be preferentially less aligned than planets in equal mass stellar binary systems. We discover tentative evidence for this trend in Gaia DR3 and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite data. Our findings suggest that dissipative precession may play a significant role in sculpting orbital configurations in a subset of moderately wide planet-hosting binaries, but is likely not solely responsible for their observed population-level alignment. We present results from the JWST First Reionization Epoch Spectroscopically Complete Observations survey on the star-forming sequence (SFS) of galaxies at 1.0 < z < 1.7, around the peak of the cosmic star formation history. Star formation rates (SFRs) are measured from the redshifted, relatively dust-insensitive Paschen- α emission line, and stellar mass measurements include the F444W (4.4 μ m; rest-frame H) band. We find SFRs of galaxies with log(M */ M ⊙) > 9.5 that are lower than found in many earlier studies by up to 0.6 dex, but in good agreement with recent results obtained with the Prospector fitting framework. The difference (log(SFR(Pa α)-SFR(Prospector)) is −0.09 ± 0.04 dex at 1010−11 M ⊙. We also measure the empirical relation between Paschen- α luminosity and rest-frame H- band magnitude and find that the scatter is only 0.04 dex lower than that of the SFR– M * relation and is much lower than the systematic differences among relations in the literature due to various methods of converting observed measurements to physical properties. We additionally identify examples of sources—that, with standard cutoffs via the UVJ diagram, would be deemed quiescent—with significant (log(sSFR)> −11 yr−1), typically extended, Paschen- α emission. Our results may be indicative of the potential unification of methods used to derive the SFS with careful selection of star-forming galaxies and independent SFR and stellar mass indicators. The Cepheid AW Per is a component in a multiple system with a long-period orbit. The radial velocities of Griffin cover the 38 yr orbit well. An extensive program of interferometry with the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy array is reported here, from which the long-period orbit is determined. In addition, a Hubble Space Telescope high-resolution spectrum in the ultraviolet demonstrates that the companion is itself a binary with nearly equal-mass components. These data combined with a distance from Gaia provide a mass of the Cepheid (primary) of M 1 = 6.79 ± 0.85 M ⊙. The combined mass of the secondary is M S = 8.79 ± 0.50 M ⊙. The interaction of supernova ejecta with a surrounding circumstellar medium (CSM) generates a strong shock, which can convert ejecta kinetic energy into observable radiation. Given the diversity of potential CSM structures (arising from diverse mass-loss processes such as late-stage stellar outbursts, binary interaction, and winds), the resulting transients can display a wide range of light-curve morphologies. We provide a framework for classifying the transients arising from interaction with a spherical CSM shell. The light curves are decomposed into five consecutive phases, starting from the onset of interaction and extending through shock breakout and subsequent shock cooling. The relative prominence of each phase in the light curve is determined by two dimensionless quantities representing the CSM-to-ejecta mass ratio η, and the breakout parameter ξ. These two parameters define four light-curve morphology classes, where each class is characterized by the location of the shock breakout and the degree of deceleration as the shock sweeps up the CSM. We compile analytic scaling relations connecting the luminosity and duration of each light-curve phase to the physical parameters. We then run a grid of radiation hydrodynamics simulations for a wide range of ejecta and CSM parameters to numerically explore the landscape of interaction light curves, and to calibrate and confirm the analytic scalings. We connect our theoretical framework to several case studies of observed transients, highlighting the relevance in explaining slow-rising and superluminous supernovae, fast blue optical transients, and double-peaked light curves. We present the galaxy stellar mass–size relation in the rest-frame near-IR (1.5 μ m) and its evolution with redshift up to z = 2.5. Sérsic profiles are measured for ∼26,000 galaxies with stellar masses M ⋆ > 109 M ⊙ from JWST/NIRCam F277W and F444W imaging provided by the COSMOS-WEB and PRIMER surveys using coordinates, redshifts, colors, and stellar mass estimates from the COSMOS2020 catalog. The new rest-frame near-IR effective radii are generally smaller than previously measured rest-frame optical sizes, on average by 0.14 dex, with no significant dependence on redshift. For quiescent galaxies, this size offset does not depend on stellar mass, but for star-forming galaxies, the offset increases from −0.1 dex at M ⋆ = 109.5 M ⊙ to −0.25 dex at M ⋆ > 1011 M ⊙. That is, we find that the near-IR stellar mass–size relation for star-forming galaxies is flatter in the rest-frame near-IR than in the rest-frame optical at all redshifts 0.5 < z < 2.5. The general pace of size evolution is the same in the near-IR as previously demonstrated in the optical, with slower evolution (R e ∝ (1 + z)−0.7) for L * star-forming galaxies and faster evolution (R e ∝ (1 + z)−1.3) for L * quiescent galaxies. Massive (M ⋆ > 1011 M ⊙) star-forming galaxies evolve in size almost as fast as quiescent galaxies. Low-mass (M ⋆ < 1010 M ⊙) quiescent galaxies evolve as slow as star-forming galaxies. Our main conclusion is that the size evolution narrative as it has emerged over the past two decades does not radically change when accessing the rest-frame near-IR with JWST, a better proxy of the underlying stellar mass distribution. The analysis of the cosmic microwave background data acquired by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the large-scale (⁠|$\ell \lesssim 1300$|⁠) Planck Telescope show a preference for the early dark energy (EDE) theory, which was set to alleviate the Hubble tension of the |$\Lambda$| cold dark matter (⁠|$\Lambda$| CDM) model by decreasing the sound horizon |$r_{s}$|⁠ , and gives |$H_{0} \approx 72$| km s |$^{-1}$| Mpc |$^{-1}$|⁠. However, the EDE model is commonly questioned for exacerbating the |$\sigma _8$| tension on top of the |$\Lambda$| CDM model, and its lack of preference from the late-time matter power spectrum observations, e.g. Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. In light of the current obscurities, we inspect if the high redshift galaxy abundance, i.e. stellar mass function/density and luminosity function, can independently probe the EDE model. Our result shows that, compared to |$\Lambda$| CDM, the EDE model prediction at |$z\gt 10$| displays better consistency with the unexpectedly high results observed by the JWST. At lower redshift, the EDE model only fits the most luminous/massive end, with the majority of the data presenting better consistency with |$\Lambda$| CDM, implying that adding an extra luminosity/mass-sensitive suppression mechanism of the galaxy formation is required for EDE to explain all data around |$z\sim 7-10$|⁠. Reionization is thought to be driven by faint star-forming galaxies, but characterizing this population has long remained very challenging. Here, we utilize deep nine-band JADES (JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey)/NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) imaging to study the star-forming and ionizing properties of 756 |$z\sim 6-9$| galaxies, including hundreds of very ultraviolet (UV)-faint objects (⁠|$M_\mathrm{UV}\gt -18$|⁠). The faintest (⁠|$m\sim 30$|⁠) galaxies in our sample typically have stellar masses of |$M_\ast \sim (1-3)\times 10^7\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$| and young light-weighted ages (⁠|$\sim$| 50 Myr), though some show strong Balmer breaks implying much older ages (⁠|$\sim$| 500 Myr). We find no evidence for extremely massive galaxies (⁠|$\gt 3\times 10^{10}\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) in our sample. We infer a strong (factor |$\gt $| 2) decline in the typical [O  iii ] |$+$| H  |$\beta$| equivalent widths (EWs) towards very faint |$z\sim 6-9$| galaxies, yet a weak UV luminosity dependence on the H  |$\alpha$| EWs at |$z\sim 6$|⁠. We demonstrate that these EW trends can be explained if fainter galaxies have systematically lower metallicities as well as more recently declining star formation histories relative to the most UV-luminous galaxies. Our data provide evidence that the brightest galaxies are frequently experiencing a recent strong upturn in star formation rate. We also discuss how the EW trends may be influenced by a strong correlation between |$M_\mathrm{UV}$| and Lyman continuum escape fraction. This alternative explanation has dramatically different implications for the contribution of galaxies along the luminosity function to cosmic reionization. Finally, we quantify the photometric overdensities around two |$z\,\gt\,7$| strong Ly  |$\alpha$| emitters. One Ly  |$\alpha$| emitter lies close to a strong photometric overdensity, while the other shows no significant nearby overdensity, perhaps implying that not all strong |$z\,\gt\, 7$| Ly  |$\alpha$| emitters reside in large ionized bubbles. Strong metallicity-dependent winds dominate the evolution of core He-burning, classical Wolf–Rayet (cWR) stars, which eject both H and He-fusion products such as |$^{14}$| N, |$^{12}$| C, |$^{16}$| O, |$^{19}$| F, |$^{22}$| Ne, and |$^{23}$| Na during their evolution. The chemical enrichment from cWRs can be significant. cWR stars are also key sources for neutron production relevant for the weak s-process. We calculate stellar models of cWRs at solar metallicity for a range of initial Helium star masses (12–50  |$\rm M_{\odot }$|⁠), adopting recent hydrodynamical wind rates. Stellar wind yields are provided for the entire post-main sequence evolution until core O-exhaustion. While literature has previously considered cWRs as a viable source of the radioisotope |$^{26}$| Al, we confirm that negligible |$^{26}$| Al is ejected by cWRs since it has decayed to |$^{26}$| Mg or proton-captured to |$^{27}$| Al. However, in Paper I, we showed that very massive stars eject substantial quantities of |$^{26}$| Al, among other elements including N, Ne, and Na, already from the zero-age-main-sequence. Here, we examine the production of |$^{19}$| F and find that even with lower mass-loss rates than previous studies, our cWR models still eject substantial amounts of |$^{19}$| F. We provide central neutron densities (N |$_{n}$|⁠) of a 30  |$\rm M_{\odot }$| cWR compared with a 32  |$\rm M_{\odot }$| post-VMS WR and confirm that during core He-burning, cWRs produce a significant number of neutrons for the weak s-process via the |$^{22}$| Ne(⁠|$\alpha$|⁠ ,n) |$^{25}$| Mg reaction. Finally, we compare our cWR models with observed [Ne/He], [C/He], and [O/He] ratios of Galactic WC and WO stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first large-scale 3D kinematic study of |$\sim$| 2700 spectroscopically confirmed young stars (⁠|$\lt $| 20 Myr) in 18 star clusters and OB associations (hereafter groups) from the combination of Gaia astrometry and Gaia –ESO Survey spectroscopy. We measure 3D velocity dispersions for all groups, which range from 0.61 to 7.4 km s |$^{-1}$| (1D velocity dispersions of 0.35–4.3 km s |$^{-1}$| ). We find the majority of groups have anisotropic velocity dispersions, suggesting they are not dynamically relaxed. From the 3D velocity dispersions, measured radii, and estimates of total mass, we estimate the virial state and find that all systems are super-virial when only the stellar mass is considered, but that some systems are sub-virial when the mass of the molecular cloud is taken into account. We observe an approximately linear correlation between the 3D velocity dispersion and the group mass, which would imply that the virial state of groups scales as the square root of the group mass. However, we do not observe a strong correlation between virial state and group mass. In agreement with their virial state, we find that nearly all of the groups studied are in the process of expanding and that the expansion is anisotropic, implying that groups were not spherical prior to expansion. One group, Rho Oph, is found to be contracting and in a sub-virial state (when the mass of the surrounding molecular cloud is considered). Understanding star formation in galaxies requires resolving the physical scale on which star formation often occurs: the scale of star clusters. We present a multiwavelength, eight-parsec resolution study of star formation in the circumnuclear star cluster and molecular gas rings of the early-type spiral NGC 1386. The cluster ring formed simultaneously ∼4 Myr ago. The clusters have similar properties in terms of mass and star formation rate, resembling those of H  ii regions in the Milky Way disc. The molecular CO gas resolves into long filaments, which define a secondary ring detached from the cluster ring. Most clusters are in CO voids. Their separation with respect to the CO filaments is reminiscent of that seen in galaxy spiral arms. By analogy, we propose that a density wave through the disc of this galaxy may have produced this gap in the central kpc. The CO filaments fragment into strings of dense, unresolved clouds with no evidence of a stellar counterpart. These clouds may be the sites of a future population of clusters in the ring. The free-fall time of these clouds, ∼10 Myr, is close to the orbital time of the CO ring. This coincidence could lead to a synchronous bursting ring, as is the case for the current ring. The inward spiralling morphology of the CO filaments and co-spatiality with equivalent kpc-scale dust filaments are suggestive of their role as matter carriers from the galaxy outskirts to feed the molecular ring and a moderately active nucleus. We analytically and numerically study the hydrodynamic propagation of a precessing jet in the context of tidal disruption events (TDEs) where the star's angular momentum is misaligned with the black hole spin. We assume that a geometrically thick accretion disc undergoes Lense–Thirring precession around the black hole spin axis and that the jet is aligned with the instantaneous disc angular momentum. At large spin-orbit misalignment angles |$\theta _{\it LS}$|⁠ , the duty cycle along a given angle that the jet sweeps across is much smaller than unity. The faster jet and slower disc wind alternately fill a given angular region, which leads to strong shock interactions between the two. We show that precessing jets can only break out of the wind confinement if |$\theta _{\it LS}$| is less than a few times the jet opening angle |$\theta _{\rm j}$|⁠. The very small event rate of observed jetted TDEs is then explained by the condition of double alignment : both the stellar angular momentum and the observer's line of sight are nearly aligned with the black hole spin. In most TDEs with |$\theta _{\it LS}\gg \theta _{\rm j}$|⁠ , the jets are initially choked by the disc wind and may only break out later when the disc eventually aligns itself with the spin axis due to the viscous damping of the precession. Such late-time jets may produce delayed radio rebrightening as seen in many optically bright TDEs. Our model is also applicable to jets associated with (stellar mass) black hole-neutron star mergers where the black hole's spin is misaligned with the orbital angular momentum. The physical properties of star cluster populations offer valuable insights into their birth, evolution, and disruption. However, individual stars in clusters beyond the nearest neighbours of the Milky Way are unresolved, forcing analyses of star cluster demographics to rely on integrated light, a process fraught with uncertainty. Here, we infer the demographics of the cluster population in the benchmark galaxy NGC 628 using data from the Legacy Extra-galactic UV Survey (LEGUS) coupled to a novel Bayesian forward-modelling technique. Our method analyses all 1178 clusters in the LEGUS catalogue, |$\sim 4$| times more than prior studies severely affected by completeness cuts. Our results indicate that the cluster mass function is either significantly steeper than the commonly observed slope of |$-2$| or is truncated at |$\approx 10^{4.5}$| M |$_\odot$|⁠ ; the latter possibility is consistent with proposed relations between truncation mass and star formation surface density. We find that cluster disruption is relatively mild for the first |$\approx 200$|   Myr of cluster evolution; no evidence for mass-dependent disruption is found. We find suggestive but not incontrovertible evidence that inner galaxy clusters may be more prone to disruption and outer galaxy clusters have a more truncated mass function, but confirming or refuting these findings will require larger samples from future observations of outer galaxy clusters. Finally, we find that current stellar track and atmosphere models, along with common forms for cluster mass and age distributions, cannot fully capture all features in the multidimensional photometric distribution of star clusters. While our forward-modelling approach outperforms earlier backward-modelling approaches, some systematic differences persist between observed and modelled photometric distributions. We investigate the relation between galaxy structure and star formation rate (SFR) in a sample of |$\sim 2.9\times 10^{4}$| central galaxies with |$z\lt 0.0674$| and axial ratios |$b/a\gt 0.5$|⁠. The star-forming main sequence (SFMS) shows a bend around the stellar mass of |$M_\ast \le {}M_c=2\times 10^{10}{}{\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠. At |$M_\ast \le {}M_c$|⁠ , the SFMS follows a power-law |$\text{SFR}\propto {}M_\ast ^{0.85}$|⁠ , while at higher masses it flattens. |$M_c$| corresponds to a dark matter halo mass of |$M_\text{vir}\sim {}10^{11.8}{\rm M}_{\odot }$| where virial shocks occurs. Some galaxy structure (e.g. half-light radius, |$R_e$|⁠) exhibits a non-monotonic dependence across the SFMS at a fixed |$M_\ast$|⁠. We find |$\text{SFR}\propto {R_e^{-0.28}}$| at fixed |$M_\ast$|⁠ , consistent with the global Kennicutt–Schmidt (KS) law. This finding suggests that galaxy sizes contribute to the scatter of the SFMS. However, at |$M_\ast \gt M_c$| the relationship between SFR and |$R_e$| diminishes. Low-mass galaxies above the mean of the SFMS have smaller radii, exhibit compact and centrally concentrated profiles resembling green valley (GV) and quiescent galaxies at the same mass, and have higher |$M_{\text{H}_2}{/}M_\rm{H\,{\small I}}$|⁠. Conversely, those below the SFMS exhibit larger radii, lower densities, have no GV or quiescent counterparts at their mass and have lower |$M_{\text{H}_2}/M_\rm{H\,{\small I}}$|⁠. The above data suggest two pathways for quenching low-mass galaxies, |$M_\ast \le {}M_c$|⁠ : a fast one that changes the morphology on the SFMS and a slow one that does not. Above |$M_c$|⁠ , galaxies below the SFMS resemble GV and quiescent galaxies structurally, implying that they undergo a structural transformation already within the SFMS. For these massive galaxies, CG are strongly bimodal, with SFMS galaxies exhibiting negative colour gradients, suggesting most star formation occurs in their outskirts, maintaining them within the SFMS. The amount of power contained in the variations in galaxy star-formation histories (SFHs) across a range of time-scales encodes key information about the physical processes which modulate star formation. Modelling the SFHs of galaxies as stochastic processes allows the relative importance of different time-scales to be quantified via the power spectral density (PSD). In this paper, we build upon the PSD framework and develop a physically motivated, 'stochastic' prior for non-parametric SFHs in the spectral energy distribution (SED)-modelling code prospector. We test this prior in two different regimes: (1) massive, |$z = 0.7$| galaxies with both photometry and spectra, analogous to those observed with the LEGA-C survey, and (2) |$z = 8$| galaxies with photometry only, analogous to those observed with NIRCam on JWST. We find that it is able to recover key galaxy parameters (e.g. stellar mass, stellar metallicity) to the same level of fidelity as the commonly used continuity prior. Furthermore, the realistic variability information incorporated by the stochastic SFH model allows it to fit the SFHs of galaxies more accurately and precisely than traditional non-parametric models. In fact, the stochastic prior is |$\gtrsim 2\times$| more accurate than the continuity prior in measuring the recent star-formation rates (log SFR |$_{100}$| and log SFR |$_{10}$|⁠) of both the |$z = 0.7$| and |$z = 8$| mock systems. While the PSD parameters of individual galaxies are difficult to constrain, the stochastic prior implementation presented in this work allows for the development of hierarchical models in the future, i.e. simultaneous SED-modelling of an ensemble of galaxies to measure their underlying PSD. We develop a model for galaxy formation and the growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), based on the fact that cold dark matter haloes form their gravitational potential wells through a fast phase with rapid change in the potential, and that the high universal baryon fraction makes cooled gas in haloes self-gravitating and turbulent before it can form rotation-supported discs. Gas fragmentation produces subclouds so dense that cloud–cloud collision and drag on clouds are not significant, producing a dynamically hot system of subclouds that form stars and move ballistically to feed the central SMBH. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) and supernova feedback is effective only in the fast phase, and the cumulative effects are to regulate star formation and SMBH growth, as well as to reduce the amount of cold gas in haloes to allow the formation of globally stable discs. Using a set of halo assembly histories, we demonstrate that the model can reproduce a number of observations, including correlations among SMBH mass, stellar mass of galaxies and halo mass, the number densities of galaxies and SMBH, as well as their evolution over the cosmic time. Using deep imaging from the CANDELS and HFF surveys, we present bulge+disc decompositions with galfitm for |$\sim$| 17 000 galaxies over |$0.2 \le z\le 1.5$|⁠. We use various model parameters to select reliable samples of discs and bulges, and derive their stellar masses using an empirically calibrated relation between mass-to-light ratio and colour. Across our entire redshift range, we show that discs follow stellar mass–size relations that are consistent with those of star-forming galaxies, suggesting that discs primarily evolve via star formation. In contrast, the stellar mass–size relations of bulges are mass-independent. Our novel data set further enables us to separate components into star-forming and quiescent based on their specific star formation rates. We find that both star-forming discs and star-forming bulges lie on stellar mass–size relations that are similar to those of star-forming galaxies, while quiescent discs are typically smaller than star-forming discs and lie on steeper relations, implying distinct evolutionary mechanisms. Similar to quiescent galaxies, quiescent bulges show a flattening in the stellar mass–size relation at |$\sim 10^{10}$|  M |$_\odot$|⁠ , below which they show little mass dependence. However, their best-fitting relations have lower normalizations, indicating that at a given mass, bulges are smaller than quiescent galaxies. Finally, we obtain rest-frame colours for individual components, showing that bulges typically have redder colours than discs, as expected. We visually derive UVJ criteria to separate star-forming and quiescent components and show that this separation agrees well with component colour. We identify the bright Am-type star HD 181793 to be a previously unknown eclipsing, chemically peculiar heartbeat binary, the second of its kind known. The system carries an orbital period of |$P = 11.47578275 \pm 0.00000055$| d. We use TESS photometry and LCOGT NRES radial velocity data to build a self-consistent orbital model and determine the fundamental stellar characteristics of the primary. We use a spectral separation method to unveil the secondary and measure the masses of both stars. The radial velocity amplitude of the primary, |$K_1 = 47.41\, {^ {+0.13}}_ {-0.12}$| km s−1, gives a mass |$M_1 = 1.57 \pm 0.01$|  M |$_\odot$|⁠. The secondary radial velocity amplitude |$K_2 = 84.95\, {^ {+0.12}}_ {-0.09}$| km s−1 yields a mass ratio |$q = 0.558 \pm 0.002$| and a secondary mass |$M_2 = 0.87 \pm 0.01$| M |$_\odot$|⁠. From the spectral energy distribution and Gaia parallax, we find a radius |$R_1 = 2.04 \pm 0.05$|  R |$_\odot$|⁠. The grazing transit profile and spectroscopic luminosity ratio indicate |$R_2 = 1.04\, {^ {+0.15}}_ {-0.10}$|  R |$_\odot$|⁠ , suggesting an early-K spectral type. We show that the heartbeat feature in the TESS light curve can be explained by time-varying ellipsoidal variation, driven by the orbital eccentricity of |$e = 0.3056\, {^ {+0.0024}}_ {-0.0026}$|⁠ , and relativistic beaming of the light of the primary. We present spatially resolved, simple stellar population equivalent ages, stellar metallicities, and abundance ratios for 456 massive (⁠|$10.3\lesssim \log (\mathrm{M}_*/\mathrm{M}_\odot)\lesssim 11.8$|⁠) quiescent galaxies at |$0.6\lesssim z\lesssim 1.0$| from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census, derived using full-spectrum models. Typically, we find flat age and [Mg/Fe] gradients, and negative [Fe/H] gradients, implying iron-rich cores. We also estimate intrinsic [Fe/H] gradients via forward modelling. We examine the observed gradients in three age bins. Younger quiescent galaxies typically have negative [Fe/H] gradients and positive age gradients, possibly indicating a recent central starburst. Additionally, this finding suggests that photometrically measured flat colour gradients in young quiescent galaxies are the result of the positive age and negative metallicity gradients cancelling each other. For older quiescent galaxies, the age gradients become flat and [Fe/H] gradients weaken, though remain negative. Thus, negative colour gradients at older ages are likely driven by metallicity gradients. The diminishing age gradient may result from the starburst fading. Furthermore, the persistence of the [Fe/H] gradients may suggest that the outskirts are simultaneously built up by mergers with lower metallicity satellites. On the other hand, the gradients could be inherited from the star-forming phase, in which case mergers may not be needed to explain our findings. This work illustrates the need for resolved spectroscopy, instead of just photometry, to measure stellar population gradients. We present determinations of the gas-phase and stellar metallicities of a sample of 65 star-forming galaxies at |$z \simeq 3.5$| using rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectroscopy from the VANDELS survey in combination with follow-up rest-frame optical spectroscopy from VLT /KMOS and Keck/MOSFIRE. We infer gas-phase oxygen abundances (⁠|$Z_{\mathrm{g}}$|⁠ ; tracing O/H) via strong optical nebular lines and stellar iron abundances (⁠|$Z_{\star }$|⁠ ; tracing Fe/H) from full spectral fitting to the FUV continuum. Our sample spans the stellar mass range |$8.5 \lt \mathrm{log}(M_{\star }/\mathrm{M}_{\odot }) \lt 10.5$| and shows clear evidence for both a stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR). We find that our O and Fe abundance estimates both exhibit a similar mass-dependence, such that |$\mathrm{Fe/H}\propto M_{\star }^{0.30\pm 0.11}$| and |$\mathrm{O/H}\propto M_{\star }^{0.32\pm 0.09}$|⁠. At fixed |$M_{\star }$| we find that, relative to their solar values, O abundances are systematically larger than Fe abundances (i.e. α-enhancement). We estimate an average enhancement of |$\mathrm{(O/Fe)} = 2.65 \pm 0.16 \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)_\odot }$| which appears to be independent of |$M_{\star }$|⁠. We employ analytic chemical evolution models to place a constraint on the strength of galactic-level outflows via the mass-outflow factor (⁠|$\eta$|⁠). We show that outflow efficiencies that scale as |$\eta \propto M_{\star }^{-0.32}$| can simultaneously explain the functional form of of the stellar and gas-phase MZR, as well as the degree of α-enhancement at fixed Fe/H. Our results add further evidence to support a picture in which α-enhanced abundance ratios are ubiquitous in high-redshift star-forming galaxies, as expected for young systems whose interstellar medium is primarily enriched by core-collapse supernovae. In recent years, cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have proven their utility as key interpretative tools in the study of galaxy formation and evolution. In this work, we present a comparative analysis of the baryon cycle in three publicly available, leading cosmological simulation suites: EAGLE, IllustrisTNG, and SIMBA. While these simulations broadly agree in terms of their predictions for the stellar mass content and star formation rates of galaxies at |$z\approx 0$|⁠ , they achieve this result for markedly different reasons. In EAGLE and SIMBA, we demonstrate that at low halo masses (⁠|$M_{\rm 200c}\lesssim 10^{11.5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠), stellar feedback (SF)-driven outflows can reach far beyond the scale of the halo, extending up to |$2\!-\!3\times R_{\rm 200c}$|⁠. In contrast, in TNG, SF-driven outflows, while stronger at the scale of the interstellar medium, recycle within the circumgalactic medium (within |$R_{\rm 200c}$|⁠). We find that active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflows in SIMBA are notably potent, reaching several times |$R_{\rm 200c}$| even at halo masses up to |$M_{\rm 200c}\approx 10^{13.5}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠. In both TNG and EAGLE, AGN feedback can eject gas beyond |$R_{\rm 200c}$| at this mass scale, but seldom beyond |$2\!-\!3\times R_{\rm 200c}$|⁠. We find that the scale of feedback-driven outflows can be directly linked with the prevention of cosmological inflow, as well as the total baryon fraction of haloes within |$R_{\rm 200c}$|⁠. This work lays the foundation to develop targeted observational tests that can discriminate between feedback scenarios, and inform subgrid feedback models in the next generation of simulations. We present long-slit spectroscopic observations of 40 Galaxy On Top of Quasars (GOTOQs) at |${0.37 \leqslant z \leqslant 1.01}$| using the South African Large Telescope. Using this and available photometric data, we measure the impact parameters of the foreground galaxies to be in the range of 3–16 kpc with a median value of 8.6 kpc. This is the largest sample of galaxies producing Mg  ii absorption at such low impact parameters. These quasar–galaxy pairs are ideal for probing the disc–halo interface. At such impact parameters, we do not find any anticorrelation between rest equivalent width (REW) of Ca  ii , Mn  ii , Fe  ii , Mg  ii , and Mg  i absorption and impact parameter. These sight lines are typically redder than those of strong Mg  ii absorbers, with the colour excess, E (B − V) for our sample ranging from −0.191 to 0.422, with a median value of 0.058. In the E (B − V) versus W 3935 plane, GOTOQs occupy the same region as Ca  ii absorbers. For a given E (B − V), we find larger W 3935 than what has been found in the Milky Way, probably due to a smaller dust-to-gas ratio in GOTOQs. Galaxy parameters could be measured for twelve cases, and their properties seem to follow the trends found for strong Mg  ii absorbers. Measuring the host galaxy properties for the full sample using HST photometry or AO-assisted ground-based imaging is important to gain insights into the relationship between the stellar mass of galaxies and the metal line REW distributions at low impact parameters. We adopt a Bayesian X-ray spectral approach to investigate the accretion properties of unobscured (⁠|$20\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 22$|⁠) and obscured (⁠|$22\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 24$|⁠) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to shed light on the orientation versus evolution scenarios for the origin of the obscuring material. For a sample of 3882 X-ray-selected AGN from the Chandra COSMOS Legacy, AEGIS, and CDFS extragalactic surveys, we constrain their stellar masses, |$M_\star$|⁠ , intrinsic X-ray luminosities, |$L_{\rm X}$|⁠ , obscuring column densities, |$N_{\rm H}$|⁠ , and specific accretion rates |$\lambda \propto L_{\rm X}/M_\star$|⁠. By combining these observables within a Bayesian non-parametric approach, we infer, for the first time, the specific accretion rate distribution (SARD) of obscured and unobscured AGN to |$z\approx 3$|⁠ , i.e. the probability of a galaxy with mass |$M_\star$| at redshift z hosting an AGN with column density |$N_{\rm H}$| and specific accretion rate |$\lambda$|⁠. Our findings indicate that (1) both obscured and unobscured SARDs share similar shapes, shifting towards higher accretion rates with redshift, (2) unobscured SARDs exhibit a systematic offset towards higher |$\lambda$| compared to obscured SARD for all redshift intervals, (3) the obscured AGN fraction declines sharply at |$\log \lambda _{\rm break} \sim -2$| for |$z \lt 0.5$|⁠ , but shifts to higher |$\lambda$| values with increasing redshift, (4) the incidence of AGN within the theoretically unstable blow-out region of the |$\lambda -N_{\rm H}$| plane increases with redshift. These observations provide compelling evidence for AGN 'downsizing' and radiation-regulated nuclear-scale obscuration with an increasing host galaxy contribution towards higher redshifts. We study a model of the neutron star in κ -deformed space-time in the presence of the cosmological constant (Λ ). The Einstein tensor and the energy-momentum tensor are generalized to κ -deformed space-time and we construct the field equations with the cosmological constant. Considering the interior of the star to be a perfect fluid as in the commutative case, we find the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff equations with the inclusion of the cosmological constant in κ -deformed space-time. The behavior of the maximum allowed mass of the star and its radius are studied with the variation in the cosmological constant as well as the deformation parameter. We see that the non-commutativity enhances the mass of the star and its maximum mass increases with a decrease in the cosmological constant. The maximum mass varies from 3.44 to 3.68 M ⊙ as Λ varies from 10 - 10 to 10 - 15 m - 2 . We also obtain the compactness factor and surface redshift of the star. We observe that the compactness of the star increases as the cosmological constant decreases, whereas the surface redshift of the star decreases with a decrease in the cosmological constant. The origin of diverse kinematic morphologies observed in low-mass galaxies is unclear. In this study, we investigate the kinematic morphologies of central galaxies with stellar mass |$10^{8.5-9.0}{\rm M}_{\odot }$| at |$z=0$| in the TNG50-1 cosmological simulation. The majority of the low-mass galaxies in TNG50-1 are dispersion-dominated, consistent with observations. By tracing the evolutionary histories of simulated low-mass galaxies, we find that while most stars form in rotating cold gas discs, the orientation of the star-forming discs relative to the galaxies may evolve with cosmic time. If the cold gas disc remains aligning with the galaxy during its evolution, stars formed at different times share the same rotational direction, leading to a rotation-dominated system. On the contrary, frequent misalignment of cold gas disc would result in a dispersion-dominated system. In addition, we also find that the two-body scattering can have a non-negligible numerical heating effect on the simulated galaxy morphology, especially at central regions of galaxies and for relatively low-mass galaxies. By comparing results of simulations with different resolutions, our results suggest that the simulated morphology of galaxies is roughly reliable when their number of stellar particles exceeds about |$10^{4}$|⁠ , and bulge morphology of galaxies can not be resolved robustly at the resolution level of TNG50-1. Despite the evidence that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) co-evolve with their host galaxy, and that most of the growth of these SMBHs occurs via merger-free processes, the underlying mechanisms which drive this secular co-evolution are poorly understood. We investigate the role that both strong and weak large-scale galactic bars play in mediating this relationship. Using 48 871 disc galaxies in a volume-limited sample from Galaxy Zoo DESI, we analyse the active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction in strongly barred, weakly barred, and unbarred galaxies up to |$z = 0.1$| over a range of stellar masses and colours. After controlling for stellar mass and colour, we find that the optically selected AGN fraction is |$31.6 \pm 0.9$| per cent in strongly barred galaxies, |$23.3 \pm 0.8$| per cent in weakly barred galaxies, and |$14.2 \pm 0.6$| per cent in unbarred disc galaxies. These are highly statistically robust results, strengthening the tantalizing results in earlier works. Strongly barred galaxies have a higher fraction of AGNs than weakly barred galaxies, which in turn have a higher fraction than unbarred galaxies. Thus, while bars are not required in order to grow an SMBH in a disc galaxy, large-scale galactic bars appear to facilitate AGN fuelling, and the presence of a strong bar makes a disc galaxy more than twice as likely to host an AGN than an unbarred galaxy at all galaxy stellar masses and colours. We present observational evidence for a stellar fundamental metallicity relation (FMR), a smooth relation between stellar mass, star formation rate, and the light-weighted stellar metallicity of galaxies, analogous to the well-established gas-phase FMR. We use the non-parametric software ppxf to reconstruct simultaneously the star formation and chemical-enrichment history of a representative sample of galaxies from the local MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) survey. We find that (i) the metallicity of individual galaxies increases with cosmic time and (ii) at all stellar masses, the metallicity of galaxies is progressively higher, moving from the starburst region above the main sequence (MS) towards the passive galaxies below the MS, manifesting the stellar FMR. The scatter is reduced when replacing the stellar mass |$M_{*}$| with |$M_{*}/R_{\rm e}$| (with |$R_{\rm e}$| being the effective radius), in agreement with previous results using the velocity dispersion |$\sigma _{\rm e}$|⁠ , which correlates with |$M_{*}/R_{\rm e}$|⁠. Our results point to starvation as the main physical process through which galaxies quench, showing that metal-poor gas accretion from the intergalactic medium/circumgalactic medium – or the lack thereof – plays an important role in galaxy evolution by simultaneously shaping both their star formation and their metallicity evolutions, while outflows play a subordinate role. This interpretation is further supported by the additional finding of a young stellar FMR, tracing only the stellar populations formed in the last 300 Myr. This suggests a tight co-evolution of the chemical composition of both the gaseous interstellar medium and the stellar populations, where the gas-phase FMR is continuously imprinted on to the stars over cosmic times. Upcoming telescopes and surveys will revolutionize our understanding of the Universe by providing unprecedented amounts of observations on extragalactic objects, which will require new tools complementing traditional astronomy methods, in particular machine learning techniques, and above all, deep architectures. In this study, we apply deep learning methods to estimate three essential parameters of galaxy evolution, i.e. redshift, stellar mass, and star formation rate (SFR), from a data set recently analysed and tailored to the Euclid context, containing simulated H -band images and tabulated photometric values. Our approach involved the development of a novel architecture called the FusionNetwork, combining two components suited to the heterogeneous data, ResNet50 for images, and a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) for tabular data, through an additional MLP providing the overall output. The key achievement of our deep learning approach is the simultaneous estimation of the three quantities, previously estimated separately. Our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods: overall, our best FusionNetwork improves the fraction of correct SFR estimates from ∼70 to ∼80 per cent, while providing comparable results on redshift and stellar mass. This study investigates the clustering and bias of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) in the BOSS-LOWZ, -CMASS, -COMB, and eBOSS samples, using two types of simulated lightcones: (i) high-fidelity lightcones from Uchuu N -body simulation, employing SHAM technique to assign LRG to (sub)haloes, and (ii) 16 000 covariance lightcones from GLAM-Uchuu N -body simulations, including LRG using HOD data from Uchuu. Our results indicate that Uchuu and glam lightcones closely replicate BOSS/eBOSS data, reproducing correlation function and power spectrum across scales from redshifts 0.2 to 1.0, from 2 to |$150 \,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$| in configuration space, from 0.005 to |$0.7\, h\,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$| in Fourier space, and across different LRG stellar masses. Furthermore, comparing with existing MD-Patchy and EZmock BOSS/eBOSS lightcones based on approximate methods, our GLAM-Uchuu lightcones provide more precise clustering estimates. We identify significant deviations from observations within |$20 \,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$| scales in MD-Patchy and EZmock , with our covariance matrices indicating that these methods underestimate errors by between 10 per cent and 60 per cent. Lastly, we explore the impact of cosmology on galaxy clustering. Our findings suggest that, given the current level of uncertainties in BOSS/eBOSS data, distinguishing models with and without massive neutrino effects on large-scale structure (LSS) is challenging. This paper highlights the Uchuu and GLAM-Uchuu simulations' robustness in verifying the accuracy of Planck cosmological parameters, providing a strong foundation for enhancing lightcone construction in future LSS surveys. We study the statistics of dwarf galaxy populations as a function of environment in cold dark matter (CDM) and warm dark matter (WDM; sterile neutrino model mass |$M_{{\rm s}}=7.1~{\rm keV}$|⁠ ; half-mode mass |$M_{{\rm hm}} = 6.3\times 10^8$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|⁠ ; and thermal relic equivalent mass |$m_{{\rm th}} = 2.8~{\rm keV}$|⁠) cosmogonies, using the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) galaxy formation model in two counterpart simulations. We measure the abundance of dwarf galaxies within 3 Mpc of DM haloes with a present-day halo mass similar to the Milky Way, finding that the number of galaxies |$M_{*}\gt 10^7$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  is nearly identical for WDM and CDM. However, the cumulative mass function becomes shallower for WDM at lower masses, yielding 50 per cent fewer dwarf galaxies of |$M_{*}\gtrsim 10^{5}$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  than CDM. The suppression of low-mass halo counts in WDM increases significantly from high- to low-density regions for haloes in the |$[0.5,2] \times M_ {\rm hm}$| range. The fraction of haloes hosting resolvable galaxies (⁠|$M_*\gtrsim 10^{5}$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  ) also diverges from overdense to underdense regions for |$M\gt 2M_ {\rm hm}$|⁠ , as the increased collapse delay at small densities pushes the collapse to after the reionization threshold. However, the stellar mass of WDM haloes at |$[0.5,2]\times M_ {\rm hm}$| is 30 per cent higher per unit halo mass than CDM haloes in underdense regions. We conclude that the suppression of galaxies with |$M_{*}\gtrsim 10^5$|   |${\rm M}_\odot$|  between WDM and CDM is independent of density: the suppression of halo counts and fraction of luminous haloes is balanced by an enhancement in stellar mass–halo mass relation. We present the new ARTEMIS emulator suite of high-resolution (baryon mass of 2.23 × 104 h −1 M⊙) zoom-in simulations of Milky Way-mass systems. Here, three haloes from the original ARTEMIS sample have been rerun multiple times, systematically varying parameters for the stellar feedback model, the density threshold for star formation, the reionization redshift, and the assumed warm dark matter (WDM) particle mass (assuming a thermal relic). From these simulations, emulators are trained for a wide range of statistics that allow for fast predictions at combinations of parameters not originally sampled, running in ∼1 ms (a factor of ∼1011 faster than the simulations). In this paper, we explore the dependence of the central haloes' stellar mass on the varied parameters, finding the stellar feedback parameters to be the most important. When constraining the parameters to match the present-day stellar mass halo mass relation inferred from abundance matching we find that there is a strong degeneracy in the stellar feedback parameters, corresponding to a freedom in formation time of the stellar component for a fixed halo assembly history. We additionally explore the dependence of the satellite stellar mass function, where it is found that variations in stellar feedback, the reionization redshift, and the WDM mass all have a significant effect. The presented emulators are a powerful tool which allows for fundamentally new ways of analysing and interpreting cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The properties of isospin-asymmetric cold nuclear matter are studied in terms of the relativistic mean-field theory in which, besides the fields of σ, ω, and ρ mesons, and the isovector, Lorentz-scalar field of the δ-meson is also taken into account. The properties of purely nucleonic np matter are studied as a function of the baryon density nB and the asymmetry parameter α, as well as the properties of electrically neutral β-equilibrium npe μ matter as a function of the baryon density nB. For different values of nB and a, such characteristics of np matter as the energy per baryon, the specific energy owing to isospin asymmetry, the effective proton and neutron masses, and the specific binding energy, are determined. It is shown that the energy owing to the asymmetry for a fixed value of α is a monotonically increasing function of the baryon density nB. For npem matter, the effective proton and neutron masses M p e f f , M n e f f , the specific binding energy Ebind, the symmetry energy Esym, the quantitative fraction of protons Yp = np/nB are studied, as well as the average meson fields σ ~ , ω ~ , δ ~ , and ρ ~ as functions of the baryon density nB. First stars play crucial roles in the development of the Universe, influencing events like cosmic reionization and the chemcal enrichment of the intergalactic medium. While first stars are conventionally thought to form at around |$z \sim 20$| –30 in the standard |$\Lambda$| cold dark matter (⁠|$\Lambda$| CDM) cosmology, observational constraints on small-scale (⁠|$\\lt $| Mpc) density fluctuations remain limited, possibly differing significantly from the scale-invariant fluctuations assumed in the |$\Lambda $| CDM model. Should this be the case, the formation of first stars could occur much earlier than typically predicted. In this study, we investigate the formation process of first stars in the extremely early epochs of |$z \gtrsim 100$| in the post-recombination Universe. At such early times, the effects of the warm cosmic microwave background (CMB) become significant. We calculate the collapse of primordial star-forming clouds using a one-zone thermo-chemical model that accounts for CMB influences on radiative heating, Compton cooling, and photodissociation reactions. We found that the impact of the CMB on the evolution is limited at |$z \lesssim 100 $|⁠ , with the temperature evolution closely resembling the conventional model. However, within the range |$100 \lesssim z \lesssim 400$|⁠ , the formation of H |$_{2}$| via the H |$^{-}$| channel is impeded by H |$^{-}$| photo-detachment induced by the CMB, leading to higher temperatures compared to standard thermal evolution. Consequently, first stars with masses exceeding |$1000\, {M}_{\odot }$| can emerge at |$z \gtrsim 100$|⁠. Furthermore, at |$z \gtrsim 500$|⁠ , the temperature evolution becomes nearly isothermal at several thousand Kelvin solely due to atomic cooling, as H |$_{2}$| formation is entirely suppressed, including the less-efficient H |$_2^{+}$| channel, which is blocked by H |$_2^{+}$| photodissociation. In such cases, supermassive stars with masses around |$\sim 10^{5}\, {M}_{\odot }$| are expected to form solely via atomic cooling. GZ And is a variable star within the visually observed multiple-star system ADS 1693. Recent observations have yielded new light curves for GZ And, obtained using the Xinglong 85-cm telescope and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) satellite. These light curves, along with radial velocity curves, were analyzed simultaneously to ascertain the fundamental physical parameters of GZ And's components. The findings indicate that the primary star has a mass of M1 = 0.57(4)M0, radius of R1 = 0.75(2)R0, and luminosity of L1 = 0.42(2)L0. The secondary star is characterized by a mass of M2 = 1.19(9)M0, radius of R2 = 1.04(3)R0, and luminosity of L2 = 0.63(3)L0. Their orbital separation is determined to be a = 2.30(6)R0. An analysis of the accumulated times of light minima reveals that GZ And is undergoing orbital period variations at a rate of dP/dt = -7.58(7) χ 10-8day·year"1, likely due to mass transfer from the more massive component to its lighter counterpart at a rate of dM2/dt = -9.06(8) χ 10-8M0 ·year"1. Additionally, distance measurements for the component stars in ADS 1693, derived from Gaia DR3 astrometric data, suggest that ADS 1693A (GZ And) and ADS 1693B are gravitationally bound and likely originated from the same molecular cloud, sharing similar ages. The epoch of reionization (EoR) progressed through the emission of ionizing photons from galaxies to their local intergalactic medium. In this work, we characterize the dwarf star-forming galaxies as candidates for the source of ionizing photons that drove EoR. We investigate the ionizing properties and star formation histories of star-forming dwarf galaxies at the last stages of EoR at |$4.8\lt z \lt 7$| using observations from the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS). The magnification due to gravitational lensing allows us to probe large dynamic ranges in stellar mass (⁠|$2\times 10^{6}\le {M}_*/{\rm M}_\odot \le 5\times 10^{9}$|⁠) and ultraviolet (UV) magnitudes (⁠|$-22.68\le M_{\rm UV}\le =-15.95$|⁠). We find a median UV slope |$\beta _{1500}\,$| of |$-2. 56\pm 0.23$| and the production efficiency of ionizing photons |$\log$| |$\xi _{\rm {ion}}\,$| |$=25.39\pm 0.6$| for the full sample (⁠|$4.8\lt z \lt 7$|⁠) with a median stellar mass of |$6.3\pm 0.5\times 10^{7} \, {\rm M}_\odot$|⁠. We find both |$\beta _{1500}\,$| and |$\xi _{\rm {ion}}\,$| are marginally correlated with the stellar mass of the galaxy, indicating a possible greater contribution of dwarf galaxies to the reionization of the Universe. We find that on average, galaxies in our sample are experiencing a recent rise/burst of star formation which translates to a higher scatter in |$\xi _{\rm {ion}}\,$| and a large scatter in H |$\alpha$| equivalent widths (EWs). Finally, we investigate the trends of H |$\alpha$| and [O  iii ] + H |$\beta$| EWs with UV magnitude and find |$M_{\rm UV}$| is correlated between H |$\alpha$| but not with [O  iii ] + H |$\beta$| EWs indicating low metallicities and recent burst in the UV faint galaxies. We conduct three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, and show that when a secondary star launches jets while interacting with a primary |$0.88~\mathrm{ M}_{\rm \odot }$| giant star in a close orbit, the system can avoid entering the common envelope evolution (CEE). Instead of a fast in-spiral, the companion slowly enters the envelope as the jets facilitate the unbinding of the giant star envelope outside the companion orbit, in what is termed the grazing envelope evolution (GEE). The assumptions are that the secondary main-sequence star accretes mass via an accretion disc, and that the accretion disc launches the jets. We perform two sets of simulations with and without jets for different companion masses at the range of 0.1–0.9 M |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , maintaining a constant jet power in the former case of |$1.5\times 10^{38}~{\rm ergs~s^{-1}}$|⁠. We examine which of the simulated systems undergo a GEE rather than a CEE and how efficiently the jets unbind the envelope. The results indicate that systems with companion masses at the range of 0.1–0.3 M |$_{\odot }$| are more likely to result in a phase of GEE lasting 1–3 yr. With the smallest companion, a 0.1 solar mass star, the jets unbind 65 per cent of the envelope mass, while almost none of the envelope is unbound if jets are not present. The results of the simulations show that the GEE can serve as an alternative to the CEE, in forming short-period binaries that have compact objects and an ejected envelope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galaxies infalling into clusters undergo both star formation quenching and morphological transformation due to environmental effects. We investigate these processes and their time-scales using a local sample of 20 191 cluster and 11 674 field galaxies from Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By analysing morphology as a function of distance from the star formation main sequence, we show that environmental influence is especially pronounced for low-mass galaxies, which emerge from the green valley (GV) with early-type morphologies before their star formation is fully suppressed. Using the galaxies' positions in the clusters' projected phase space, we examine the evolution of blue cloud, GV, and red-sequence fractions as a function of time since infall. Interestingly, the GV fraction remains constant with time since infall, suggesting a balanced flow of galaxies in and out of this class. We estimate that galaxies less massive than |$10^{10}\,\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }$| spend approximately 0.4 Gyr in the GV. By comparing quenched and early-type populations, we provide further evidence for the 'slow-then-rapid' quenching model and suggest that it can also be applied to morphological transitions. Our results indicate that morphological transformation occurs at larger radii than complete star formation quenching. About 75 per cent of galaxies undergoing morphological transition in clusters are spirals evolving into S0s, suggesting that infalling galaxies retain their discs, while massive ellipticals are relics of early merger events. Finally, we show it takes approximately 2.5 and 1.2 Gyr after the delay time (⁠|$\sim 3.8 {\,\rm Gyr}$|⁠) for the population of low-mass galaxies in clusters to reach a 50 per cent threshold in quenched and early-type fraction, respectively. The observationally inferred size versus stellar–mass relationship (SMR) for low-mass galaxies provides an important test for galaxy formation models. However, the relationship relies on assumptions that relate observed luminosity profiles to underlying stellar mass profiles. Here we use the Feedback in Realistic Environments simulations of low-mass galaxies to explore how the predicted SMR changes depending on whether one uses star-particle counts directly or mock observations. We reproduce the SMR found in The Exploration of Local Volume Satellites survey remarkably well only when we infer stellar masses and sizes using mock observations. However, when we use star particles to directly infer stellar masses and half-mass radii, we find that our galaxies are too large and obey an SMR with too little scatter compared to observations. This discrepancy between the 'true' galaxy size and mass and those derived in the mock observation approach is twofold. First, our simulated galaxies have higher and more varied mass-to-light ratios (MLR) at a fixed colour than those commonly adopted, which tends to underestimate their stellar masses compared to their true, simulated values. Second, our galaxies have radially increasing MLR gradients therefore using a single MLR tends to underpredict the mass in the outer regions. Similarly, the true half-mass radius is larger than the half-light radius because the light is more concentrated than the mass. If our simulations are accurate representations of the real Universe, then the relationship between galaxy size and stellar mass is even tighter for low-mass galaxies than is commonly inferred from observed relations. Given their dominance of the galaxy number density, dwarf galaxies are central to our understanding of galaxy formation. While the incidence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their impact on galaxy evolution have been extensively studied in massive galaxies, much less is known about the role of AGN in the evolution of dwarfs. We search for radiatively efficient AGN in the nearby (0.1 < z < 0.3) dwarf (108 M⊙ < M ⋆ < 1010 M⊙) population, using spectral energy distribution fitting (via prospector) applied to deep ultraviolet to mid-infrared photometry of 508 dwarf galaxies. Around a third (32 ± 2 per cent) of our dwarfs show signs of AGN activity. We compare the properties of our dwarf AGN to control samples, constructed from non-AGN, which have the same distributions of redshift and stellar mass as their AGN counterparts. Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests between the AGN and control distributions indicate that the AGN do not show differences in their distances to nodes, filaments, and nearby massive galaxies from their control counterparts. This indicates that AGN triggering in the dwarf regime is not strongly correlated with local environment. The fraction of AGN hosts with early-type morphology and those that are interacting are also indistinguishable from the controls within the uncertainties, suggesting that interactions do not play a significant role in inducing AGN activity in our sample. Finally, the star formation activity in dwarf AGN is only slightly lower than that in their control counterparts, suggesting that the presence of radiatively efficient AGN does not lead to significant, prompt quenching of star formation in these systems. In a hierarchical, dark matter-dominated Universe, stellar mass functions (SMFs), galaxy merger rates, star formation histories (SFHs), satellite abundances, and intracluster light (ICL), should all be intimately connected observables. However, the systematics affecting observations still prevent universal and uniform measurements of, for example, the SMF and the SFHs, inevitably preventing theoretical models to compare with multiple data sets robustly and simultaneously. We here present our holistic semi-empirical model decode (Discrete statistical sEmi-empiriCal mODEl) that converts via abundance matching dark matter merger trees into galaxy assembly histories, using different SMFs in input and predicting all other observables in output in a fully data-driven and self-consistent fashion with minimal assumptions. We find that: (1) weakly evolving or nearly constant SMFs below the knee (⁠|$M_\star \lesssim 10^{11} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠) are the best suited to generate SFHs aligned with those inferred from MaNGA, SDSS, GAMA, and, more recently, JWST; (2) the evolution of satellites after infall only affects the satellite abundances and SFHs of massive central galaxies but not their merger histories; (3) the resulting SFR– |$M_\star$| relation is lower in normalization by a factor of |$\sim 2$| with respect to observations, with a flattening at high masses more pronounced in the presence of mergers; (4) the latest data on ICL can be reproduced if mass-loss from mergers is included in the models. With current and planned gravitational-wave (GW) observing runs, coincident multimessenger timing of resonant shattering flares (RSFs) and GWs may soon allow for neutron star (NS) asteroseismology to be used to constrain the nuclear symmetry energy, an important property of fundamental nuclear physics that influences the composition and equation of state of NSs. In this work, we examine the effects of combining multiple RSF detections on these symmetry energy constraints, and consider how realistic uncertainties in the masses of the progenitor NSs may weaken them. We show that the detection of subsequent multimessenger events has the potential to substantially improve constraints beyond those obtained from the first, and that this improvement is insensitive to the mass of the NSs that produce the RSFs and its uncertainty. This sets these asteroseismic constraints apart from bulk NS properties such as radius, for which the NS mass is highly important, meaning that any multimessenger RSF and GW events can equally improve our knowledge of fundamental physics. One of the most basic quantities relevant to planning observations and assessing detection bias is the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Remarkably, the SNR of an idealized radial velocity (RV) signal has not been previously derived beyond scaling behaviours and ignoring orbital eccentricity. In this work, we derive the RV SNR for three relevant cases to observers. First, we consider a single mass orbiting a star, revealing the expected result that |$\mathrm{SNR}\propto K \sqrt{T}$|⁠ , where T is the observing window, but an additional dependence on eccentricity and argument of periastron. We show that the RV method is biased towards companions with their semimajor axes aligned to the observer, which is physically intuitive, but also less obviously that the marginalized bias to eccentricity is negligible until one reaches very high eccentricities. Secondly, we derive the SNR necessary to discriminate eccentric companions from 2:1 resonance circular orbits, although our result is only valid for eccentricities |$e\lesssim 0.3$|⁠. We find that the discriminatory SNR is |$\tfrac{9}{8} e^2 (1-e^2)^{-1/2}$| times that of the eccentric planet solution's SNR, and is thus typically an order of magnitude less. Finally, we have obtained a semi-empirical expression for the SNR of the idealized Rossiter–McLaughlin (RM) effect, revealing the bias with respect to spin–orbit alignment angle. Our formula is valid to within 10 per cent accuracy in 95.45 per cent of the training samples used (for |$b\le 0.8$|⁠), but larger deviations occur when comparing to different RM models. We characterize the earliest galaxy population in the JADES Origins Field, the deepest imaging field observed with JWST. We make use of ancillary Hubble Space Telescope optical images (five filters spanning 0.4–0.9 μ m) and novel JWST images with 14 filters spanning 0.8−5 μ m, including seven medium-band filters, and reaching total exposure times of up to 46 hr per filter. We combine all our data at >2.3 μ m to construct an ultradeep image, reaching as deep as ≈31.4 AB mag in the stack and 30.3–31.0 AB mag (5 σ, r = 0.″1 circular aperture) in individual filters. We measure photometric redshifts and use robust selection criteria to identify a sample of eight galaxy candidates at redshifts z = 11.5−15. These objects show compact half-light radii of R 1/2 ∼ 50−200 pc, stellar masses of M ⋆ ∼ 107−108 M ☉, and star formation rates ∼ 0.1−1 M ☉ yr−1. Our search finds no candidates at 15 < z < 20, placing upper limits at these redshifts. We develop a forward-modeling approach to infer the properties of the evolving luminosity function without binning in redshift or luminosity that marginalizes over the photometric redshift uncertainty of our candidate galaxies and incorporates the impact of nondetections. We find a z = 12 luminosity function in good agreement with prior results, and that the luminosity function normalization and UV luminosity density decline by a factor of ∼2.5 from z = 12 to z = 14. Context. The metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the Galactic bulge is characterized by a multi-peak shape, with a metal-poor peak centered at [Fe/H] ∼ −0.3 dex and a metal-rich peak centered at [Fe/H] ∼ +0.3 dex. The bimodality of the MDF is also reflected in the [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance ratios, suggesting the presence of different stellar populations in the bulge. Aims. In this work we aim to reproduce the observed MDF of the Galactic bulge by testing a scenario in which the metal-poor component of the bulge is formed by stars formed in situ, during a strong burst of star formation, while the metal-rich population is formed by stars created in situ during a second burst of star formation and/or stars accreted from the innermost part of the Galactic disk as an effect of a growing bar. Methods. We adopted a chemical evolution model that is able to follow the evolution of several chemical species with detailed nucleosynthesis prescriptions. In particular, because of the importance of the production of Fe in constraining the MDF, close attention is paid to the production of this element in both Type Ia supernovae and massive stars. In particular, we included yields from rotating massive stars with different rotational velocity prescriptions. Our model also takes the infall and outflow of gas into account, as well as the effect of stellar migration. Results are compared to ∼13 000 stars from the SDSS/APOGEE survey that belong to the region located at a Galactocentric distance RGC ≤ 3.5 kpc. Results. We successfully reproduce the observed double-peak shape of the bulge MDF as well as the abundance trends of the α elements relative to Fe by assuming both (i) a multi-burst star formation history with a quenching of the first burst of ∼102 Myr and (ii) migration of stars from the innermost part of the Milky Way disk, as an effect of a growing bar. According to our results, the fraction of the stellar mass of the bulge-bar that belongs to the inner disk is ∼40%. In terms of the nucleosynthesis, we conclude that models that assume either no rotation for massive stars or a distribution of rotational velocities that favors slow rotation at high metallicities best reproduce the observed MDF as well as the [α/Fe] and the [Ce/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance patterns. Aims. We investigated the nature of the anomalies appearing in four microlensing events KMT-2020-BLG-0757, KMT-2022-BLG-0732, KMT-2022-BLG-1787, and KMT-2022-BLG-1852. The light curves of these events commonly exhibit initial bumps followed by subsequent troughs that extend across a substantial portion of the light curves. Methods. We performed thorough modeling of the anomalies to elucidate their characteristics. Despite their prolonged durations, which differ from the usual brief anomalies observed in typical planetary events, our analysis revealed that each anomaly in these events originated from a planetary companion located within the Einstein ring of the primary star. It was found that the initial bump arouse when the source star crossed one of the planetary caustics, while the subsequent trough feature occurred as the source traversed the region of minor image perturbations lying between the pair of planetary caustics. Results. The estimated masses of the host and planet, their mass ratios, and the distance to the discovered planetary systems are (Mhost/M⊙, Mplanet/MJ, q/10−3, DL/kpc) = (0.58−0.30+0.33, 10.71−5.61+6.17, 17.61 ± 2.25, 6.67−1.30+0.93) for KMT-2020-BLG-0757, (0.53−0.31+0.31, 1.12−0.65+0.65, 2.01 ± 0.07, 6.66−1.84+1.19) for KMT-2022-BLG-0732, (0.42−0.23+0.32, 6.64−3.64+4.98, 15.07 ± 0.86, 7.55−1.30+0.89) for KMT-2022-BLG-1787, and (0.32−0.19+0.34, 4.98−2.94+5.42, 8.74 ± 0.49, 6.27−1.15+0.90) for KMT-2022-BLG-1852. These parameters indicate that all the planets are giants with masses exceeding the mass of Jupiter in our solar system and the hosts are low-mass stars with masses substantially less massive than the Sun. Nearby dwarf galaxies display a variety of effective radii (sizes) at a given stellar mass, suggesting different evolution scenarios according to their final "stellar" size. The TNG hydrodynamical simulations present a bimodality in the z = 0 size–mass relation (SMRz0) of dwarf galaxies, at r1/2, ⋆ ∼ 450 pc. Using the TNG50 simulation, we explored the evolution of the most massive progenitors of dwarf galaxies (z = 0 log(M⋆/M⊙) between 8.4 and 9.2) that end up as central galaxies of their groups. We split these dwarfs into three classes of the SMRz0: "Normals" from the central spine of the main branch, and "Compacts" from the secondary branch as well as the lower envelope of the main branch. Both classes of Compacts see their stellar sizes decrease from z ∼ 1 onwards in contrast to Normals, while the sizes of the gas and dark matter (DM) components continue to increase (as for Normals). A detailed analysis reveals that Compacts live in poorer environments, and thus suffer fewer major mergers from z = 0.8 onwards, which otherwise would pump angular momentum into the gas, allowing strong gas inflows, producing inner star formation, and thus leading to the buildup of a stellar core. Compacts are predicted to be rounder and to have bluer cores. Compact dwarfs of similar sizes are observed in the GAMA survey, but the bimodality in size is less evident and the most compact dwarfs tend to be passive rather than star forming, as in TNG50.
