The energy and centrality dependence of the kaon resonance ratio $(K^{*0}+\Bar{K}^{*0})/(K^+ + K^-)$ is explored in the RHIC-BES and CBM-FAIR energy regime. To this aim, the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model is employed to simulate reconstructable $K^{*}$ resonances in Au+Au and p+p collisions from $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=3-39$ GeV. We obtain a good description of the resonance yields and mean transverse momenta over the whole investigated energy range. The decrease of the $K^*/K$ ratio, with increasing centrality is in line with the available experimental data. We also observe the experimenatlly measured increase in $\langle p_{\text{T}}\rangle$ with increasing centrality which is interpreted as a lower reconstruction probability of low-$p_{\text{T}}$ $K^*$ due to the $p_{\text{T}}$ dependent absorption of the decay daughter hadrons. We conclude that the observed suppression of reconstructable $K^{*}$ resonances provides a strong sign of an extended hadronic rescattering stage at all investigated energies. Its duration increases from peripheral to central reactions as expected. Following a method, suggested by the STAR experiment, the "duration" of the hadronic stage is extracted using the $K^*/K$ ratios at chemical and kinetic freeze-out. The resulting lifetimes are in good agreement with the experimental data, but much shorter than the actual lifetime of the hadronic phase in the transport simulation. This indicates that the experimental method to estimate the life time of the hadronic stage is too simplified., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Experimental data from the NA49 collaboration show an unexpectedly steep rise of the rapidity width of the $\phi$ meson as function of beam energy, which was suggested as possible interesting signal for novel physics. In this work we show that the Ultra-relativistic Quantum-Molecular-Dynamics (UrQMD) model is able to reproduce the shapes of the rapidity distributions of most measured hadrons and predicts a common linear increase of the width for all hadrons. Only when following the exact same analysis technique and experimental acceptance of the NA49 and NA61/SHINE collaborations, we find that the extracted value of the rapidity width of the $\phi$ increases drastically for the highest beam energy. We conclude that the observed steep increase of the $\phi$ rapidity width is a problem of limited detector acceptance and the simplified Gaussian fit approximation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

It is shown that the hadronic phase in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions can be used to understand the properties of the $f_0(980)$ resonance. In particular it is shown that the centrality dependence of the $f_0(980)/\pi$ and $f_0(980)/\phi$ ratios depends strongly on the $f_0(980)\rightarrow \overline{K}+K$ branching ratio and whether the $f_0(980)$ is produced as a $\left | \overline{q}q \right \rangle$ or $\left | \overline{s}s \right \rangle$ state. These conclusions are drawn from calculations within the partial chemical equilibrium of the HRG model within Thermal-FIST as well as with the fully non-equilibrium hybrid-transport approach UrQMD. Our findings show how the hadronic phase in heavy ion collisions can be used for studies of exotic hadron properties otherwise possible only in dedicated experiments such as PANDA., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Subensemble Acceptance Method (SAM) [1,2] is an essential link between measured event-by-event fluctuations and their grand canonical theoretical predictions such as lattice QCD. The method allows quantifying the global conservation law effects in fluctuations. In its basic formulation, SAM requires a sufficiently large system such as created in central nucleus-nucleus collisions and sufficient space-momentum correlations. Directly in the spinodal region of the First Order Phase Transition (FOPT) different approximations should be used that account for finite size effects. Thus, we present the generalization of SAM applicable in both the pure phases, metastable and unstable regions of the phase diagram [3]. Obtained analytic formulas indicate the enhancement of fluctuations due to crossing the spinodal region of FOPT and are tested using molecular dynamics simulations. A rather good agreement is observed. Using transport model calculations with interaction potential we show that the spinodal enhancement of fluctuations survives till the later stages of collision via the memory effect [4]. However, at low collision energies the space-momentum correlation is not strong enough for this signal to be transferred to second and third order cumulants measured in momentum subspace. This result agrees well with recent HADES data on proton number fluctuations at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.4$ GeV which are found to be consistent with the binomial momentum space acceptance [5]., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. The dilepton production yields in relativistic heavy ion collisions are investigated along isentropic trajectories in the quark (Wigner) phase within the two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. An enhancement of the ultra-low energy dilepton yield in the vicinity of the color superconducting (CSC) phase and the QCD critical point (QCD-CP) is found, compared to the free quark gas. Furthermore, we have found a nontrivial structure in the beam energy dependence of the ultra-low energy dilepton yield. A local maximum and minimum of the dilepton yield as a function of entropy per baryon emerge when the trajectories are close to both locations of the CSC phase transition line and the QCD-CP. Only the maximum appears in the scenario without the CSC phase but with the QCD-CP. On the other hand, when only the CSC phase is considered, the dilepton yield monotonically increases as the beam energy decreases. These distinctive patterns could potentially serve as signals of the CSC phase and QCD-CP. In addition, it is found that the dilepton production yield and the location of the minimum strongly depend on the value of diquark coupling, suggesting the possibility that the value of the diquark coupling may be extracted from experimental data.

The effects of a finite system volume on thermodynamic quantities, such as the pressure, energy density, specific heat, speed of sound, conserved charge susceptibilities and correlations, in hot and dense strongly interacting matter are studied within the parity-doublet Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model. Such an investigation is motivated by relativistic heavy-ion collisions, which create a blob of hot QCD matter of a finite volume, consisting of strongly interacting hadrons and potentially deconfined quarks and gluons. The effect of the finite volume of the system is incorporated by introducing a lower momentum cut-offs in the momentum integrals appearing in the model, the numerical value of the momentum cut-off being related to the de Broglie wavelength of the given particle species. It is found that some of these quantities show a significant volume dependence, in particular those sensitive to pion degrees of freedom, and the crossover transition is generally observed to become smoother in finite volume. These findings are relevant for the effective equation of state used in fluid dynamical simulations of heavy-ion collisions and efforts to extract the freeze out properties of heavy-ion collisions with susceptibilities involving electric charge and strangeness., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model is employed to simulate $\pi^-+\mathrm{C}$ and $\pi^-+\mathrm{W}$ collisions at p$_\mathrm{lab}=1.7$ GeV motivated by the recent HADES results. By comparing the proton and $\Lambda$ transverse momentum spectra, it was observed that the data and transport model calculation show a good agreement, if cluster formation is included to obtain the free proton spectra. Predictions of light cluster ($d$, $t$, $^3$He, $^4$He, as well as ${}^{3}_\Lambda$H and $\Xi$N) multiplicities and spectra are made using a coalescence mechanism. The resulting multiplicities suggest that the pion beam experiment can produce a substantial amount of ${}^{3}_\Lambda$H, especially in $\pi^-+\mathrm{W}$ collisions due to the stopping of the $\Lambda$ inside the large tungsten nucleus. The findings are supplemented by a statistical multi-fragmentation analysis suggesting that even larger hyper-fragments are produced copiously. It is suggested that even double strange hypernuclei are in reach and might be studied in more detail using a slightly higher pion beam momentum., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

The centrality determination and the estimated fluctuations of number of participant nucleons $N_{part}$ in Au-Au collisions at 1.23 $A$GeV beam kinetic energy suffers from severe model dependencies. Comparing the Glauber Monte Carlo (MC) and UrQMD transport models, it is shown that $N_{part}$ is a strongly model dependant quantity. In addition, for any given centrality class, Glauber MC and UrQMD predicts drastically different $N_{part}$ distributions. The impact parameter $b$ and the number of charged particles $N_{ch}$ on the other hand are much more correlated and give an almost model independent centrality estimator. It is suggested that the total baryon number balance, from integrated rapidity distributions, can be used instead of $N_{part}$ in experiments. We investigate the development of the directed, $v_1$, and elliptic flow, $v_2$, in heavy ion collisions in mid-central Au+Au reactions at $E_\mathrm{lab}=1.23 A$ GeV. We demonstrate that the elliptic flow of hot and dense matter is initially positive ($v_2>0$) due to the early pressure gradient. This positive $v_2$ transfers its momentum to the spectators, which leads to the creation of the directed flow $v_1$. In turn, the spectator shadowing of the in-plane expansion leads to a preferred decoupling of hadrons in the out-of-plane direction and results in a negative $v_2$ for the observable final state hadrons. We propose a measurement of $v_1-v_2$ flow correlations and of the elliptic flow of dileptons as methods to pin down this evolution pattern. The elliptic flow of the dileptons allows then to determine the early-state EoS more precisely, because it avoids the strong modifications of the momentum distribution due to shadowing seen in the protons. This opens the unique opportunity for the HADES and CBM collaborations to measure the Equation-of-State directly at 2-3 times nuclear saturation density., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. Using relativistic supernova simulations of massive progenitor stars with a quark-hadron equation of state (EoS) and a purely hadronic EoS, we identify a distinctive feature in the gravitational-wave signal that originates from a buoyancy-driven mode (g-mode) below the proto-neutron star convection zone. The mode frequency lies in the range $200\lesssim f\lesssim 800\,\text{Hz}$ and decreases with time. As the mode lives in the core of the proto-neutron star, its frequency and power are highly sensitive to the EoS, in particular the sound speed around twice saturation density., Comment: Accepted Phys. Bayesian methods are used to constrain the density dependence of the QCD Equation of State (EoS) for dense nuclear matter using the data of mean transverse kinetic energy and elliptic flow of protons from heavy ion collisions (HIC), in the beam energy range $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2-10 GeV$. The analysis yields tight constraints on the density dependent EoS up to 4 times the nuclear saturation density. The extracted EoS yields good agreement with other observables measured in HIC experiments and constraints from astrophysical observations both of which were not used in the inference. A comparison of light hypernuclei production, from UrQMD+coalescence and the thermal model, in heavy ion collisions over a wide range of beam energies and system sizes is presented. We find that both approaches provide generally similar results, with differences in specific details. Especially the ratios of hypertriton to $\Lambda$ are affected by both the source radius $\Delta r$ of the coalescence procedure as well as canonical effects. On the other hand, the double ratio $S_3$ is almost independent of canonical effects, which is in contrast to coalescence. Thus, both the beam energy dependence and centrality dependence of $S_3$ can be used to constrain the hypertriton source radius. To do so the currently available data is not yet sufficient. Elliptic flow is shown to be unaffected by the source size of the nuclei and an almost perfect mass scaling of the elliptic flow is observed. Our predictions further suggest that the existence of the H-dibaryon ($\Lambda\Lambda$) seems ruled out by ALICE data., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Isospin triggering allows to distinguish coalescence from thermal production of light clusters in heavy ion collisions. Triggering on $Y(\pi^-) - Y(\pi^+)$ allows to select very neutron or proton rich final states. The deuteron (cluster) production with coalescence ($d \propto n \cdot p$) leads then to an inverse parabolic dependence of the deuteron yield on $\Delta Y_{\pi}$. In contrast, in a thermal model, cluster production is independent on $\Delta Y_{\pi}$. The pion-to-proton ratio is identified as a potential signal for a non-equilibrium first-order chiral phase transition in heavy-ion collisions, as the pion multiplicity is directly related to entropy production. To showcase this effect, a non-equilibrium Bjorken expansion starting from realistic initial conditions along a Taub adiabat is used to simulate the entropy production. Different dynamical criteria to determine the final entropy-per-baryon number are investigated and matched to a hadron resonance gas model along the chemical freeze out curve to obtain the final pion and proton numbers. We detect a strong enhancement of their multiplicity ratio at the energies where the system experiences a strong phase transition as compared to a smooth crossover which shows almost no enhancement., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) correlations for charged pions in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.4 - 7.7~\text{GeV}$ (corresponding to beam kinetic energies in the fixed target frame from $E_{\rm{lab}}=1.23~\text{to}~30~\text{GeV/nucleon}$) are calculated using the UrQMD model with different equations of state. The effects of a phase transition at high baryon densities are clearly observed in the HBT parameters that are explored. It is found that the available data on the HBT radii, $R_{O}/R_{S}$ and $R^{2}_{O}-R^{2}_{S}$, in the investigated energy region favors a relatively stiff equation of state at low beam energies which then turns into a soft equation of state at high collision energies consistent with astrophysical constraints on the high density equation of state of QCD. The specific effects of two different phase transition scenarios on the $R_{O}/R_{S}$ and $R^{2}_{O}-R^{2}_{S}$ are investigated. It is found that a phase transition with a significant softening of the equation of state below 4 times nuclear saturation density can be excluded using HBT data. Our results highlight that the pion's $R_{O}/R_{S}$ and $R^{2}_{O}-R^{2}_{S}$ are sensitive to the stiffness of the equation of state, and can be used to constrain and understand the QCD equation of state in the high baryon density region., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

A set of different equations of state is implemented in the molecular dynamics part of a non-equilibrium transport simulation (UrQMD) of heavy-ion collisions. It is shown how different flow observables are affected by the density dependence of the equation of state. In particular, the effects of a phase transition at high density are explored, including an expected reduction in mean $m_T$. We also show that an increase in $v_2$ is characteristic for a strong softening of the equation of state. The phase transitions with a low coexistence density, $n_{\mathrm{CE}}<4 n_0$, show a distinct minimum in the slope of the directed flow as a function of the beam energy, which would be a clear experimental signal. We study the production of clusters and hypernuclei at midrapidity employing the Parton-Hadron-Quantum-Molecular-Dynamics (PHQMD) approach, a microscopic n-body transport model based on the QMD propagation of the baryonic degrees of freedom with density dependent 2-body potential interactions. In PHQMD the cluster formation occurs dynamically, caused by the interactions. The clusters are recognized by the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) algorithm. We present the PHQMD results for cluster and hypernuclei formation in comparison with the available experimental data at relativistic energies. PHQMD allows to study the time evolution of formed clusters and the origin of their production, which helps to understand how such weakly bound objects are formed and survive in the rather dense and hot environment created in heavy-ion collisions. It offers therefore an explanation of the 'ice in the fire' puzzle. To investigate whether this explanation of the 'ice in the fire' puzzle applies only to the MST results we study also the deuterons production by coalescence. We embed MST and coalescence in the PHQMD and UrQMD transport approaches in order to obtain model independent results. We find that both clustering procedures give very similar results for the deuteron observables in the UrQMD as well as in the PHQMD environment. We present UrQMD predictions for the comparison of the recently measured Ag+Ag and Au+Au runs at a beam energy of $E_\mathrm{lab}$ = 1.23~$A$GeV explored by the HADES experiment. To this aim, different centrality definitions are investigated: We suggest that in the case of particle production, both systems should be compared at the same number of participating nucleons, while for a comparison of the (elliptic) flow, a selection on the initial state eccentricity - as in high energy reaction - is better suited. Generally, we find good agreement between both system, if these centrality criteria are used. Specifically, the deuteron yields per participant and the pion to proton ratios are shown to scale with $A_\mathrm{part}$ except for very central Ag+Ag reactions due to stronger stopping in such reactions. The elliptic flow in both systems follows inital state eccentricity scaling, albeit with the opposite sign as compared to high energies, suggesting a strong relation between final flows and the initial state also at the low energies explored here. The observation of this scaling might then allow to obtain further information on the expansion properties (and the EoS) of matter at high baryon densities., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We propose to extend the commonly known flow analysis in the transverse $p_x$-$p_y$ plane to novel flow coefficients based on the angular distribution in the $p_x$-$p_z$ and $p_y$-$p_z$ planes. The new flow coefficients, called $u_n$ and $w_n$ (in addition to $v_n$), turn out to be also highly sensitive to the nuclear Equation-of-State and can be used to explore the EoS in more detail than is possible using only $v_n$. As an example to quantify the effect of the EoS, the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model is used to investigate 20-30\% central Au+Au collisions at E$_\mathrm{lab}=1.23~A$GeV., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the coalescence factors $B_2$ and $B_3$ at low collision energies ($\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}<6$ GeV) with special focus on the HADES and RHIC-BES experiments. It is shown that, in order to properly interpret the coalescence factors $B_A$, two important corrections are necessary: I) $B_2$ has to be calculated using the proton $\times$ neutron yields in the denominator, instead of the square of the proton yield, and II) the primordial proton (neutron) densities have to be used for the normalization and not the final state (free) protons (neutrons). Both effects lead to a drastic reduction of $B_2$ and $B_3$ at low energies. This reduction decreases the discrepancy between the volumes extracted from HBT measurements and the volumes extracted from the coalescence factor ($V\propto 1/B_2$). While at HADES and low RHIC-BES energies these corrections are substantial, they become irrelevant above $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}>6$ GeV. The hadron-quark phase transition in quantum chromodyanmics has been suggested as an alternative explosion mechanism for core-collapse supernovae. We study the impact of three different hadron-quark equations of state (EoS) with first-order (DD2F\_SF, STOS-B145) and second-order (CMF) phase transitions on supernova dynamics by performing 97 simulations for solar- and zero-metallicity progenitors in the range of $14\texttt{-}100\,\text{M}_\odot$. We find explosions only for two low-compactness models ($14 \text{M}_\odot$ and $16\,\text{M}_\odot$) with the DD2F\_SF EoS, both with low explosion energies of $\mathord{\sim}10^{50}\,\mathrm{erg}$. These weak explosions are characterised by a neutrino signal with several mini-bursts in the explosion phase due to complex reverse shock dynamics, in addition to the typical second neutrino burst for phase-transition driven explosions. The nucleosynthesis shows significant overproduction of nuclei such as $^{90}\mathrm{Zr}$ for the $14\,\text{M}_\odot$ zero-metallicity model and $^{94}\mathrm{Zr}$ for the $16\,\text{M}_\odot$ solar-metallicity model, but the overproduction factors are not large enough to place constraints on the occurrence of such explosions. Several other low-compactness models using the DD2F\_SF EoS and two high-compactness models using the STOS EoS end up as failed explosions and emit a second neutrino burst. For the CMF EoS, the phase transition never leads to a second bounce and explosion. For all three EoS, inverted convection occurs deep in the core of the proto-compact star due to anomalous behaviour of thermodynamic derivatives in the mixed phase, which heats the core to entropies up to $4k_\text{B}/\text{baryon}$ and may have a distinctive gravitational wave signature, also for a second-order phase transition.

Correlations between the harmonic flow coefficients $v_1$, $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$ of nucleons in semi-peripheral Au+Au collisions at a beam energy of 1.23~AGeV are investigated within the hadronic transport approach Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD). In contrast to ultra-relativistic collision energies (where the flow coefficients are evaluated with respect to the respective event plane), we predict strong correlations between the flow harmonics with respect to the reaction plane. Based on an event-by-event selection of the midrapidity final state elliptic flow of protons we show that as a function of rapidity, I) the sign of the triangular flow changes, II) that the shape of $v_4$ changes from convex to concave, and III) that $v_3\propto v_1v_2$ and $v_4\propto v_2^2$ for all different event classes, indicating strong correlations between all investigated harmonic flow coefficients., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The formation of deuterons in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies is investigated by employing two recently advanced models -- the Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) method and the coalescence model by embedding them in the PHQMD and the UrQMD transport approaches. While the coalescence mechanism combines nucleons into deuterons at the kinetic freeze-out hypersurface, the MST identifies the clusters during the different stages of time evolution. We find that both clustering procedures give very similar results for the deuteron observables in the UrQMD as well as in the PHQMD environment. Moreover, the results agree well with the experimental data on deuteron production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 8.8$ GeV (selected for the comparison of the methods and models in this study). A detailed investigation shows that the coordinate space distribution of the produced deuterons differs from that of the free nucleons and other hadrons. Thus, deuterons are not destroyed by additional rescattering.

Binary neutron-star mergers and heavy-ion collisions are related through the properties of the hot and dense nuclear matter formed during these extreme events. In particular, low-energy heavy-ion collisions offer exciting prospects to recreate such {extreme} conditions in the laboratory. However, it remains unexplored to what degree those collisions can actually reproduce hot and dense matter formed in binary neutron star mergers. As a way to understand similarities and differences between these systems, we {discuss their geometry and }perform a direct numerical comparison of the thermodynamic conditions probed in both collisions. To enable a direct comparison, we employ a finite-temperature equation of state able to describe the entire high-energy phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics. Putting side by side the evolution of both systems, we find that laboratory heavy-ion collisions at the energy range of $E_{\mathrm{lab}}=0.4 - 0.6\ A$ MeV probe (thermodynamic) states of matter that are very similar to those created in binary neutron-star mergers. It is shown that the initial compression in central heavy ion collisions at beam energies of $E_\mathrm{lab}=1-10A$~GeV depends dominantly on the underlying equation of state and only marginally on the model used for the dynamical description. To do so, a procedure to incorporate any equation of state in the UrQMD transport model is introduced. In particular we compare the baryon density, temperature and pressure evolution as well as produced entropy in a relativistic ideal hydrodynamics approach and the UrQMD transport model, where the same equation of state is used in both approaches. Not only is the compression similar if the same equation of state is used in either dynamical model, but it also strongly depends on the actual equation of state. We compare the microscopic transport models UrQMD, PHSD, PHQMD, and SMASH to make predictions for the upcoming Ag+Ag data at $E_\mathrm{lab}=1.58$~$A$GeV ($\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.55$~GeV) by the HADES collaboration. We study multiplicities, spectra and effective source temperatures of protons, $\pi^{\pm,0}$, $K^\pm$, the $\eta$, $\Lambda+\Sigma^0$ and the $\Xi^-$ within these models. Despite variations in the detailed implementation of the dynamics in the different models, the employed transport approaches all show consistent multiplicities of the bulk of investigated hadrons. The main differences are in the $\Xi^-$ production, which is treated differently between UrQMD/SMASH on one side employing high mass resonance states with explicit decays to $\mathrm{Resonance}\rightarrow \Xi+K+K$ in contrast to PHSD/PHQMD which account only non-resonant $\Xi$ production channels. A comparison of the spectra, summarized by effective source temperatures, shows that all models provide similar source temperatures around $T_\mathrm{source}=80-95$~MeV, and show substantial radial flow on the order of $\langle v_T\rangle=0.22c-0.3c$ even for such a small system., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

We present results of a phase space coalescence approach within the UrQMD transport and -hybrid model for a very wide range of beam energies from SIS to LHC. The coalescence model is able to qualitatively describe the whole range of experimental data with a fixed set of parameters. Some systematic deviations are observed for very low beam energies where the role of feed down from heavier nuclei and multi-fragmentation becomes relevant. The coalescence results are mostly very close to the thermal model fits. However, both the coalescence approach as well as thermal fits are struggling to simultaneously describe the triton multiplicities measured with the STAR and ALICE experiment. The double ratio of $tp/d^2$, in the coalescence approach, is found to be essentially energy and centrality independent for collisions of heavy nuclei at beam energies of $\mathrm{E_{lab}}> 10 A$ GeV. On the other hand the clear scaling of the $d/p^2$ and $t/p^3$ ratios with the systems volume is broken for peripheral collisions, where a canonical treatment and finite size effects become more important., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, version accepted for publication. Collisions of atomic nuclei at relativistic velocities allow to recreate the conditions encountered in neutron stars or in the early universe micro-seconds after the Big Bang. These reactions are performed in today's largest accelerator facilities, e.g. at CERN in Geneva, at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven, NY or in the planned FAIR facility in Darmstadt Germany. During such a collision the matter is heated up to hundreds of MeV (billions of degrees) and compressed to densities of $3-10$ times the density inside ordinary atomic nuclei (i.e. $10^{17}-10^{18}$ kg/m$^3$). Usually these collisions are studied via the measurement of a multitude of strongly interacting particles, called hadrons, that are emitted at the end of the collision. However, also some photons are created. These photons are of special interest as they allow to look into the early stage of the collisions, because they are only very weakly (namely only electro-magnetically) interacting with the hadrons of the created fireball. Spatial and temporal data for earthquakes with magnitude M greater than or equal to 6.5 can provide crucial information about the seismic history and potential for large earthquakes in a region. We analyzed approximately 313,500 events that occurred in the Sunda-arc region during the last 56 years, from 1964 to 2020, reported by the International Seismological Center. We report a persistent increase in the annual number of the events with mb greater than or equal to 6.5. We tested this increase against the null hypothesis and discarded the possibility of the increase being due to random groupings. The trend given by Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average suggests continuing increase of such large-magnitude events in the region during the next decade. At the same time, the computed Gutenberg Richter b value shows anomalies that can be related to the occurrence of the mega 2004 Sumatra earthquake, and to possible state of high tectonic stress in the eastern parts of the region.

A novel method for identifying the nature of QCD transitions in heavy-ion collision experiments is introduced. PointNet based Deep Learning (DL) models are developed to classify the equation of state (EoS) that drives the hydrodynamic evolution of the system created in Au-Au collisions at 10 AGeV. The DL models were trained and evaluated in different hypothetical experimental situations. A decreased performance is observed when more realistic experimental effects (acceptance cuts and decreased resolutions) are taken into account. It is shown that the performance can be improved by combining multiple events to make predictions. The PointNet based models trained on the reconstructed tracks of charged particles from the CBM detector simulation discriminate a crossover transition from a first order phase transition with an accuracy of up to 99.8%. The models were subjected to several tests to evaluate the dependence of its performance on the centrality of the collisions and physical parameters of fluid dynamic simulations. The models are shown to work in a broad range of centralities (b=0-7 fm). However, the performance is found to improve for central collisions (b=0-3 fm). There is a drop in the performance when the model parameters lead to reduced duration of the fluid dynamic evolution or when less fraction of the medium undergoes the transition. These effects are due to the limitations of the underlying physics and the DL models are shown to be superior in its discrimination performance in comparison to conventional mean observables., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We introduce a Python package that provides simply and unified access to a collection of datasets from fundamental physics research - including particle physics, astroparticle physics, and hadron- and nuclear physics - for supervised machine learning studies. The datasets contain hadronic top quarks, cosmic-ray induced air showers, phase transitions in hadronic matter, and generator-level histories. While public datasets from multiple fundamental physics disciplines already exist, the common interface and provided reference models simplify future work on cross-disciplinary machine learning and transfer learning in fundamental physics. We discuss the design and structure and line out how additional datasets can be submitted for inclusion. As showcase application, we present a simple yet flexible graph-based neural network architecture that can easily be applied to a wide range of supervised learning tasks. We show that our approach reaches performance close to dedicated methods on all datasets. To simplify adaptation for various problems, we provide easy-to-follow instructions on how graph-based representations of data structures, relevant for fundamental physics, can be constructed and provide code implementations for several of them. We point out that the variance of net-baryon distribution normalized by the Skellam distribution baseline, $\kappa_2[B-\bar{B}]/\langle B+\bar{B}\rangle$, is sensitive to the possible modification of (anti)baryon yields due to $B\bar{B}$ annihilation in the hadronic phase. The corresponding measurements can thus place stringent limits on the magnitude of the $B\bar{B}$ annihilation and its inverse reaction. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the hadronic phase in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC via the recently developed subensemble sampler + UrQMD afterburner and show that the effect survives in net-proton fluctuations, which are directly accessible experimentally. The available experimental data of the ALICE Collaboration on net-proton fluctuations disfavors a notable suppression of (anti)baryon yields in $B\bar{B}$ annihilations predicted by the present version of UrQMD if only global baryon conservation is incorporated. On the other hand, the annihilations improve the data description when local baryon conservation is imposed. The two effects can be disentangled by measuring $\kappa_2[B+\bar{B}]/\langle B+\bar{B}\rangle$, which at the LHC is notably suppressed by annihilations but virtually unaffected by baryon number conservation., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We study the applicability of a Deep Neural Network (DNN) approach to simulate one-dimensional non-relativistic fluid dynamics. Numerical fluid dynamical calculations are used to generate training data-sets corresponding to a broad range of profiles to perform supervised learning with DNN. The performance of the DNN approach is analyzed, with a focus on its interpolation and extrapolation capabilities. Issues such as inference speed, the networks capacities to interpolate and extrapolate solutions with limited training samples from both initial geometries and evolution duration aspects are studied in detail. The optimal DNN performance is achieved when its objective is set to learn the mapping between hydro profiles after a fixed value time step, which can then be applied successively to reach moments in time much beyond the duration contained in the training. The DNN has an advantage over the conventional numerical methods by not being restricted by the Courant criterion, and it shows a speedup over the conventional numerical methods by at least two orders of magnitude., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The recent discovery of binary neutron star mergers has opened a new and exciting venue of research into hot and dense strongly interacting matter. For the first time this elusive state of matter, described by the theory of quantum chromo dynamics, can be studied in two very different environments. On the macroscopic scale in the collisions of neutron stars and on the microscopic scale in collisions of heavy ions at particle collider facilities. We will discuss the conditions that are created in these mergers and the corresponding high energy nuclear collisions. This includes the properties of QCD matter, i.e. the expected equation of state as well as expected chemical and thermodynamic properties of this exotic matter. To explore this matter in the laboratory - a new research prospect is available at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, FAIR. The new facility is being constructed adjacent to the existing accelerator complex of the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research at Darmstadt/Germany, expanding the research goals and technical possibilities substantially. The worldwide unique accelerator and experimental facilities of FAIR will open the way for a broad spectrum of unprecedented research supplying a variety of experiments in hadron, nuclear, atomic and plasma physics as well as biomedical and material science which will be briefly described., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted contribution to a 'special issue' of the Astronomische Nachrichten

It is shown that the inclusion of hadronic interactions, and in particular nuclear potentials, in simulations of heavy ion collisions at the SPS energy range can lead to obvious correlations of protons. These correlations contribute significantly to an intermittency analysis as performed at the NA61 experiment. The beam energy and system size dependence is studied by comparing the resulting intermittency index for heavy ion collisions of different nuclei at beam energies of $40A$, $80A$ and $150A$ GeV. The resulting intermittency index from our simulations is similar to the reported values of the NA61 collaboration, if nuclear interactions are included. The observed apparent intermittency signal is the result of the correlated proton pairs with small relative transverse momentum $\Delta p_{t}$, which would be enhanced by hadronic potentials, and this correlation between the protons is slightly influenced by the coalescence parameters and the relative invariant four-momentum $q_{inv}$ cut., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

The thermal fit to preliminary HADES data of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=2.4$ GeV shows two degenerate solutions at $T\approx50$ MeV and $T\approx70$ MeV. The analysis of the same particle yields in a transport simulation of the UrQMD model yields the same features, i.e. two distinct temperatures for the chemical freeze-out. While both solutions yield the same number of hadrons after resonance decays, the feeddown contribution is very different for both cases. This highlights that two systems with different chemical composition can yield the same multiplicities after resonance decays. The nature of these two minima is further investigated by studying the time-dependent particle yields and extracted thermodynamic properties of the UrQMD model. It is confirmed, that the evolution of the high temperature solution resembles cooling and expansion of a hot and dense fireball. The low temperature solution displays an unphysical evolution: heating and compression of matter with a decrease of entropy. These results imply that the thermal model analysis of systems produced in low energy nuclear collisions is ambiguous but can be interpreted by taking also the time evolution and resonance contributions into account., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The search for a first-order phase transition in strongly interacting matter is one of the major objectives in the exploration of the phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In the present work we investigate dilepton radiation from the hot and dense fireballs created in Au-Au collisions at projectile energies of 1-2 $A$GeV for potential signatures of a first-order transition. Toward this end, we employ a hydrodynamic simulation with two different equations of state, with and without a phase transition. The latter is constrained by susceptibilities at vanishing chemical potential from lattice-QCD as well as neutron star properties, while the former is implemented via modification of the mean-fields in the quark phase. We find that the latent heat involved in the first-order transition leads to a substantial increase in the low-mass thermal emission signal, by about a factor of two above the cross-over scenario., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Second-order susceptibilities $\chi^{11}_{ij}$ of baryon, electric, and strangeness, $B$, $Q$, and $S$, charges, are calculated in the Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model and compared to available lattice QCD data. The susceptibilities are sensitive to the short range repulsive interactions between different hadron species, especially to the hardcore repulsion of hyperons. Decreasing the hyperons size, as compared to the size of the non-strange baryons, does improve significantly the agreement of the CMF model results with the Lattice QCD data. The electric charge-dependent susceptibilities are sensitive to the short range repulsive volume of mesons. The comparison with lattice QCD data suggests that strange baryons, non-strange mesons and strange mesons have significantly smaller excluded volumes than non-strange baryons. The CMF model with these modified hadron volumes allows for a mainly hadronic description of the QCD susceptibilities significantly above the chiral pseudo-critical temperature. This improved CMF model which is based on the lattice QCD data, has been used to study the properties of both cold QCD matter and neutron star matter. The phase structure in both cases is essentially unchanged, i.e. a chiral first-order phase transition occurs at low temperatures ($T_{\rm CP}\approx 17$ MeV), and hyperons survive deconfinement to higher densities than non-strange hadrons. The neutron star maximal mass remains close to 2.1$M_\odot$ and the mass-radius diagram is only modified slightly due to the appearance of hyperons and is in agreement with astrophysical observations., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

In this proceeding, we review our recent work using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to identify the nature of the QCD transition in a hybrid modeling of heavy-ion collisions. Within this hybrid model, a viscous hydrodynamic model is coupled with a hadronic cascade "after-burner". As a binary classification setup, we employ two different types of equations of state (EoS) of the hot medium in the hydrodynamic evolution. The resulting final-state pion spectra in the transverse momentum and azimuthal angle plane are fed to the neural network as the input data in order to distinguish different EoS. To probe the effects of the fluctuations in the event-by-event spectra, we explore different scenarios for the input data and make a comparison in a systematic way. We observe a clear hierarchy in the predictive power when the network is fed with the event-by-event, cascade-coarse-grained and event-fine-averaged spectra. A new method of event characterization based on Deep Learning is presented. The PointNet models can be used for fast, online event-by-event impact parameter determination at the CBM experiment. For this study, UrQMD and the CBM detector simulation are used to generate Au+Au collision events at 10 AGeV which are then used to train and evaluate PointNet based architectures. The models can be trained on features like the hit position of particles in the CBM detector planes, tracks reconstructed from the hits or combinations thereof. The Deep Learning models reconstruct impact parameters from 2-14 fm with a mean error varying from -0.33 to 0.22 fm. For impact parameters in the range of 5-14 fm, a model which uses the combination of hit and track information of particles has a relative precision of 4-9 % and a mean error of -0.33 to 0.13 fm. In the same range of impact parameters, a model with only track information has a relative precision of 4-10 % and a mean error of -0.18 to 0.22 fm. This new method of event-classification is shown to be more accurate and less model dependent than conventional methods and can utilize the performance boost of modern GPU processor units., Comment: Replaced with version accepted for publication. 10 pages, 8 figures

We present different methods of unsupervised learning which can be used for outlier detection in high energy nuclear collisions. The UrQMD model is used to generate the bulk background of events as well as different variants of outlier events which may result from misidentified centrality or detector malfunctions. The methods presented here can be generalized to different and novel physics effects. To detect the outliers, dimensional reduction algorithms are implemented, specifically the Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Autoencoders (AEN). We find that mainly the reconstruction error is a good measure to distinguish outliers from background. The performance of the algorithms is compared using a ROC curve. It is shown that the number of reduced (encoded) dimensions to describe a single event contributes significantly to the performance of the outlier detection task. We find that the model which is best suited to separate outlier events requires a good performance in reconstructing events and at the same time a small number of parameters., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, new version with added references in section 1 and slightly improved layout of some figures

We investigate simultaneous effects of finite system size and global charge conservation on thermal fluctuations in the vicinity of a critical point. For that we consider a finite interacting system which exchanges particles with a finite reservoir (thermostat), comprising a statistical ensemble that is distinct from the common canonical and grand canonical ensembles. As a particular example the van der Waals model is used. The global charge conservation effects strongly influence the cumulants of particle number distribution when the system size is comparable to that of the reservoir. If the system size is large enough to capture all the physics associated with the interactions, the global charge conservation effects can be accurately described and corrected for analytically, within a recently developed subensemble acceptance method. The finite size effects start to play a significant role when the correlation length grows large due to proximity of the critical point or when the system is small enough to be comparable to an eigenvolume of an individual particle.
