Die Dissertation Afropolitan Space Invading between Neoliberalization and Africanization untersucht, wie afropolitische Räume durch Rauminvasoren (sog. „space invaders“) in Romanen erkundet werden. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass afropolitische Romane den von Taiye Selasi 2005 initiierten Afropolitanismus stets zwischen den Polen der Neoliberalisierung und der Afrikanisierung verorten, wird die These vorgestellt, dass AutorInnen wie Teju Cole, Dinaw Mengestu, Chika Unigwe und Sefi Atta in ihren nach 2005 erschienenen Romanen durch Rauminvasionen („space invading“) eine produktive Friktion generieren, durch die einem Afropolitan turn innerhalb des kosmopolitischen Diskurses mithilfe von Literatur eine Form gegeben wird. Die Romane handeln diesen Denkansatz durchgehend räumlich aus. Coles Every Day is for the Thief bezieht sich auf die afropolitische Stadt, Mengestus The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears auf das afropolitische Zuhause, Unigwes On Black Sisters' Street auf die durch das Sensorium ausgehandelten afropolitischen Identitäten und Attas A Bit of Difference auf den Körper innerhalb des afropolitischen Arbeitsmarktes. Obgleich die Analyse die Schriftwerke von Cole, Mengestu, Unigwe und Atta als wichtigstes Fundament im „Afropolitan space invading“ einordnet, wird auch auf weitere Werke von Mbue, Farah, Adichie, Brew-Hammond und anderen AutorInnen Bezug genommen.

Ce rapport a pour objectif d'évaluer l'ensemble des impacts du secteur de l'élevage sur l'environnement, tout en présentant des propositions techniques et politiques propres à les atténuer. Cette évaluation s'appuie sur les informations disponibles les plus récentes et complètes, et prend en compte non seulement les impacts directs mais aussi ceux liés à la production d'aliments du bétail. Le secteur de l'élevage apparaît comme l'un des principaux responsables des grands problèmes environnementaux, que ce soit au niveau local ou mondial. Selon les résultats de ce rapport, l'élevage devrait être au coeur des politiques mises en place pour faire face aux problèmes de dégradation des sols, de changement climatique, de pollution de l'air, de manque de ressources en eau ou de leur pollution, et de réduction de la biodiversité. La contribution de l'élevage aux problèmes environnementaux est considérable et son rôle dans leur résolution l'est tout autant. L'impact est d'une ampleur telle qu'il est urgent d'agir. Et il est possible de réduire cet impact de façon significative et à un coût raisonnable.

Présentation de l'éditeur : This report aims to assess the full impact of the livestock sector on environmental problems, along with potential technical and policy approaches to mitigation. The assessment takes into account direct impacts, along with the impacts of feed crop agriculture required for livestock production. The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. Livestock's contribution to environmental problems is on a massive scale and its potential contribution to their solution is equally large. The impact is so significant that it needs to be addressed with urgency. Major reductions in impact could be achieved at reasonable cost

Une étude internationale pilotée par la Banque mondiale, la FAO et l'USAID et impliquant la Commission de l'Union européenne et les agences de développement de plusieurs nations européennes et américaines a porté sur les interactions entre l'élevage et l'environnement au niveau mondial. Les principaux impacts directs de dégradation ou "points chauds" ayant pour origine l'élevage ont été mis en lumière. Mais c'est aussi beaucoup sur les causes indirectes -principalement économiques et sociales- que l'attention a été portée, afin d'éclairer les liaisons entre les politiques de développement de l'élevage et l'utilisation des ressources naturelles, et finalement d'améliorer les mécanismes de prise de décision. L'étape actuelle consiste à mettre au point des outils pratiques pour évaluer et suivre les impacts environnementaux utilisables dans les futurs projets de développement et dans le choix de nouvelles politiques.

The combined per capita consumption of meat, eggs, and milk in developing countries grew by about 50 per cent from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. As incomes rise and cities swell, people in the developing world are diversifying their diets to include a variety of meats, eggs, and dairy products. This trend toward diversified eating habits is likely to continue for some time to come and it has led to considerable controversy about the risks and opportunities involved. Some observers fear that greatly increased demand for feed grains will raise the price of cereals to the poor. Others are concerned that higher concentration of livestock production near cities adds to pollution. Still others worry about the public health effects of increased consumption of animal fats and the rapidly increasing incidence of diseases passing from animals to humans. On the other hand, many analysts point to the nutritional benefits of increased consumption of animal products for populations that are still largely deficient in intake of protein and micro nutrients. Furthermore, livestock traditionally have been an important source of income for the rural poor in developing countries. Finally, increased demand for livestock products may provide an engine for sustainable intensification of small holder food and feed production systems. A team of researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) collaborated to produce this comprehensive and even-handed attempt at defining the nature, extent, scope, and implications of what they term the “Livestock Revolution” in developing countries. Looking forward to 2020, they argue convincingly that the structural shifts in world agriculture being brought about by shifts in developing country demand for foods of animal origin will continue and that increasingly global markets have the ability to supply both cereal and animal products in desired quantities without undue price rises. They emphasize, however, that policy decisions taken for the livestock sector of developing countries will determine whether the Livestock Revolution helps or harms the world’s poor and malnourished. The report emphasizes the importance of continued investment in both research on and development of animal and feed grain production and processing, and the need for policy action to help small, poor livestock producers become better integrated with commercial livestock marketing and processing. It details a host of requirements in the area of technology development for production and processing of livestock products, potential benefits from new technologies, and critical policy issues for environmental conservation and protection of public health.

El objetivo de este informe es realizar una evaluación del impacto global del sector pecuario sobre los problemas ambientales, así como de los posibles enfoques técnicos y normativos para mitigarlo. Esta evaluación se basa en los datos más recientes y completos a disposición y tiene en cuenta tanto los impactos directos como los derivados de los cultivos forrajeros necesarios para la producción ganadera. Por la magnitud de su impacto, la ganadería es uno de los dos o tres sectores con repercusiones más graves en los principales problemas medioambientales a todos los niveles, desde el ámbito local hasta el mundial. Los resultados de este informe indican que la consideración de este sector es fundamental a la hora de diseñar políticas encaminadas a la solución de los problemas relacionados con la degradación de las tierras, el cambio climático, la contaminación atmosférica, la escasez y contaminación del agua y la pérdida de biodiversidad. La incidencia del ganado en los problemas ambientales, así como también su potencial para contribuir a solucionarlos, son decisivos. Su impacto es tan significativo que precisa urgente atención. Podrían obtenerse notables reducciones del impacto a un costo razonable.
