2. Morphology and orientation change of layer-by-layer deposited one- and two-dimensional coordination polymer nanocrystals containing rhodium paddle-wheel units

Abstract

Surface-directed and preferentially oriented assemblies of nanomaterials can enable enhanced applications in e.g. catalysis or sensing. Coordination polymers, which can be even conducting, could be suitable materials for this purpose because of their facile surface anchoring. Hence, we coassembled rhodium paddle-wheel building blocks with bi- or trifunctional linkers in dip coatings that were produced by layer-by-layer approach on silicon wafers functionalized by thin nanocrystalline gold surfaces. These gold surfaces were decorated with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) for coordination and binding to the Rh-units. As linkers, pyrazine, triazine and melamine were used, leading to rectangularly-shaped, hexagonally-shaped or needle-like crystals, respectively. The coordination polymers were produced by repeated dipping into the linker and paddle-wheel solution, each followed by a cleaning step. The crystals growth was followed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). AFM and GISAXS revealed the shape and size of the crystals. GIWAXS disclosed their preferred orientation. It turned out that the automated dipping procedure does not lead to a strong alignment of crystallites along the dipping direction for the pyrazine-based deposits. However, these crystals are preferentially oriented with respect to the substrate normal direction. The crystallographic direction and the degree of the alignment depend on the number of deposition cycles. In the early phases of the deposition process, predominantly “lying” crystals were detected. With increasing number of the deposition cycles, the fraction of “standing” crystals became dominant. 13. White paper on machine learning in 6G wireless communication networks

Abstract

This white paper discusses various topics, advances, and projections regarding machine learning (ML) in wireless communications. Sixth generation (6G) wireless communications networks will be the backbone of the digital transformation of societies by providing ubiquitous, reliable, and near-instant wireless connectivity for humans and machines. Recent advances in ML research have enabled a wide range of novel technologies such as self-driving vehicles and voice assistants. Such innovation is made possible by the availability of advanced ML models, large datasets, and high computational power. In addition, the ever-increasing demand for connectivity will require even more extensive innovation in 6G wireless networks. Consequently, ML tools will play a major role in solving the new problems in the wireless domain. In this paper, we offer a vision of how ML will impact wireless communications systems. We first provide an overview of the ML methods that have the highest potential to be used in wireless networks. We then discuss the problems that can be solved by using ML in various layers of the network such as the physical, medium-access, and application layers. Zero-touch optimization of wireless networks using ML is another interesting aspect discussed in this paper. Finally, at the end of each section, a set of important future research questions is presented.

Abstract

High resolution imaging gamma-ray detectors were developed using Hamamatsu's 5[inches] diameter R3292 position sensitive PMT (PSPMT) [1] and a variety of crystal scintillator arrays. Special readout techniques were used to maximize the active imaging area while reducing the number of readout channels. Spatial resolutions approaching I mm were obtained in a broad energy range from 20 to 511 keV. Results are also presented of coupling the scintillator arrays to the PMT via imaging light guides consisting of acrylic optical fibers.

Abstract

GnpIS is an information system designed to help scientists working on plants and fungi to decipher the molecular and genetic architecture of trait variations by facilitating the navigation through genetic, genomic, and phenotypic information. The purpose of the present chapter is to illustrate how users can (1) explore datasets from phenotyping experiments in order to build new datasets for studying genotype × environment interactions in traits, (2) browse into the results of other genetic analysis data such as GWAS to generate or check working hypothesis about candidate genes or to identify important alleles and germplasms for breeding programs, and (3) explore the polymorphism in specific area of the genome using InterMine, JBrowse tools embedded in the GnpIS information system.

Abstract

Background: Three multicenter studies were conducted in East Germany on the treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia in children. The latest of the three studies (AML-BFM-93-OST) was part of the common German study AML-BFM-93. Patients and Methods: The total number of registered patients was 262. The number and dosage of administered chemotherapeutic agents was elevated with each new study. Results: Both the remission rate (85%) and the likelihood of an event free survival (52% after 5 years) could be improved significantly in study AML-BFM-93-OST. The results of the common German study AML-BFM-93 were identical to those of the East German part AML-BFM-93-OST. Compared with international studies it was one of the most successful treatment strategies in children with AML. Patients who showed toxic side effects to heart, liver, kidneys, skin or nervous system during the chemotherapy had a significantly lower risk of relapse, once they overcame the intensive therapy. During the five years of study AML-BFM-93-OST, treatment results could be improved despite an unchanged therapy strategy. This may partly be due to the modernisations and restorations that were carried out in many East German hospitals in this time. Conclusions: The therapy regimen of study AML-BFM-93 allowed a substantial improvement in the treatment of children with AML. Further intensification of chemotherapy should only be undertaken in accordance to the individual sensitivity of each patient.

Abstract

We performed fine mapping of 39 established type 2 diabetes (T2D) loci in 27,206 cases and 57,574 controls of European ancestry. We identified 49 distinct association signals at these loci, including five mapping in or near KCNQ1. 'Credible sets' of the variants most likely to drive each distinct signal mapped predominantly to noncoding sequence, implying that association with T2D is mediated through gene regulation. Credible set variants were enriched for overlap with FOXA2 chromatin immunoprecipitation binding sites in human islet and liver cells, including at MTNR1B, where fine mapping implicated rs10830963 as driving T2D association. We confirmed that the T2D risk allele for this SNP increases FOXA2-bound enhancer activity in islet- and liver-derived cells. We observed allele-specific differences in NEUROD1 binding in islet-derived cells, consistent with evidence that the T2D risk allele increases islet MTNR1B expression. Our study demonstrates how integration of genetic and genomic information can define molecular mechanisms through which variants underlying association signals exert their effects on disease.

Abstract

Neuroimaging research indicates that human intellectual ability is related to brain structure including the thickness of the cerebral cortex. Most studies indicate that general intelligence is positively associated with cortical thickness in areas of association cortex distributed throughout both brain hemispheres. In this study, we performed a cortical thickness mapping analysis on data from 182 healthy typically developing males and females ages 9 to 24. years to identify correlates of general intelligence (g) scores. To determine if these correlates also mediate associations of specific cognitive abilities with cortical thickness, we regressed specific cognitive test scores on g scores and analyzed the residuals with respect to cortical thickness. The effect of age on the association between cortical thickness and intelligence was examined. We found a widely distributed pattern of positive associations between cortical thickness and g scores, as derived from the first unrotated principal factor of a factor analysis of Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) subtest scores. After WASI specific cognitive subtest scores were regressed on g factor scores, the residual score variances did not correlate significantly with cortical thickness in the full sample with age covaried. When participants were grouped at the age median, significant positive associations of cortical thickness were obtained in the older group for g-residualized scores on Block Design (a measure of visual-motor integrative processing) while significant negative associations of cortical thickness were observed in the younger group for g-residualized Vocabulary scores. These results regarding correlates of general intelligence are concordant with the existing literature, while the findings from younger versus older subgroups have implications for future research on brain structural correlates of specific cognitive abilities, as well as the cognitive domain specificity of behavioral performa

Abstract

A standardized, sensitive and universal method for minimal residual disease (MRD) detection in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is still pending. Although hyperexpression of Wilms' tumor (WT1) gene transcript has been frequently proposed as an MRD marker in AML, wide comparability of the various methods used for evaluating WT1 expression has not been given. We established and standardized a multicenter approach for quantifying WT1 expression by quantitative reverse transcriptase PCR (qRT-PCR), on the basis of a primer/probe set combination at exons 6 and 7. In a series of quality-control rounds, we analyzed 69 childhood AML samples and 47 normal bone marrow (BM) samples from 4 participating centers. Differences in the individual WT1 expressions levels ranged within <0.5 log of the mean in 82% of the cases. In AML samples, the median WT1/1E+04 Abelson (ABL) expression was 3.5E+03 compared with that of 2.3E+01 in healthy BM samples. As 11.5% of childhood AML samples in this cohort harbored WT1 mutations in exon 7, the effect of mutations on WT1 expression has been investigated, showing that mutated cases expressed significantly higher WT1 levels than wild-type cases. Hence, our approach showed high reproducibility and applicability, even in patients with WT1 mutations; therefore, it can be widely used for the quantitation of WT1 expression in future clinical trials.
