The heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits two-band, $d$-wave superconductivity with a finite energy gap over the whole Fermi surface around the magnetic instability where 4$f$ antiferrerromagnetic order is suppressed. In contrast, in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ heavy-fermion superconductivity appears only when 4$f$-electronic antiferromagnetic order is replaced at ultra-low temperatures by a combined nuclear and 4$f$-spin order. Whereas both compounds exhibit different variants of antiferromagnetic instabilities, i.e., a spin-density-wave quantum critical point in CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and one of "partial-Mott" type in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, in both cases the Cooper pairing, as well as the pronounced "strange-metal" behavior in YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, appear to be driven by large-to-small Fermi surface fluctuations. The transport properties and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) for these materials are dominated by single-ion Kondo scatterings down to very low temperatures. Further open problems of the Kondo lattice include both the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order as well as the onset of lattice coherence. While microscopic coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism seems to require a sufficiently large staggered moment, the onset of lattice coherence in transport measurements and STS is associated solely with the crystal-field-doublet ground state, while it involves the fully degenerate Hund's rule multiplet in ARPES., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, to appear in JPS Conference Proceedings for the 29th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics (LT29), 2022

The tetragonal heavy-fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N} = 70$ mK and exhibits an unconventional quantum critical point (QCP) of Kondo-destroying type at $B_{\rm N} = 60$ mT, for the magnetic field applied within the basal ($a,b$) plane. Ultra-low-temperature magnetization and heat-capacity measurements at very low fields indicate that the 4$f$-electronic antiferromagnetic (AF) order is strongly suppressed by a nuclear-dominated hybrid order (`A-phase') at $T_{\rm A} \le 2.3$ mK, such that quantum critical fluctuations develop at $B \approx 0$ (Schuberth et al., Science \textbf{351}, 485 (2016)). This enables the onset of heavy-fermion superconductivity ($T_{\rm c} = 2$ mK) which appears to be suppressed by the primary AF order at elevated temperatures. Measurements of the Meissner effect reveal bulk superconductivity, with $T_{\rm c}$ decreasing under applied field to $T_{\rm c} < 1$ mK at $B > 20$ mT. The observation of a weak but distinct superconducting shielding signal at a temperature as high as 10 mK suggests the formation of insulated random islands with emergent A-phase order and superconductivity. Upon cooling, the shielding signal increases almost linearly in temperature, indicating a growth of the islands which eventually percolate at $T \approx 6.5$ mK. Recent electrical-resistivity results by Nguyen et al. (Nat. Commun. \textbf{12}, 4341 (2021)) confirm the existence of superconductivity in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ at ultra-low temperatures. The combination of the results of Schuberth et al. and Nguyen et al. at ultra-low temperatures below $B_{\rm N}$, along with those previously established at higher temperatures in the paramagnetic state, provide compelling evidence that the Kondo-destruction quantum criticality robustly drives unconventional superconductivity., Comment: review, 14 pages

We report a study of isoelectronic chemical substitution in the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Upon silicon-doping, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of CeRh$_6$(Ge$_{1-x}$Si$_x$)$_4$ is continuously suppressed, and no transition is observed beyond $x_c$$\approx$0.125. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with $C/T \propto$log($T^*/T$) is observed close to $x_c$, indicating the existence of strong quantum fluctuations, while the $T$-linear behavior observed upon pressurizing the parent compound is absent in the resistivity, which appears to be a consequence of the disorder induced by silicon doping. Our findings provide evidence for the role played by disorder on the unusual ferromagnetic quantum criticality in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, and provides further evidence for understanding the origin of this behavior.

CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $\mu$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering, we propose a CEF-level scheme which accounts for the easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy, where the low lying first excited CEF exhibits significantly stronger hybridization than the ground state. These results suggest that the orbital anisotropy of the ground state and low lying excited state doublets are important for realizing anisotropic electronic coupling between the $f$- and conduction electrons, which gives rise to the highly anisotropic hybridization observed in photoemission experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We present thermopower measurements on Yb(Rh$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$. Upon Co substitution the Kondo temperature is decreasing and the single large thermopower minimum observed for YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ splits into two minima. Simultaneously, the absolute thermopower values are strongly reduced due to a weaker exchange coupling between the $4f$ and the conduction electron states with increasing $x$. Pure YbCo$_2$Si$_2$ is considered a stable, trivalent system. Nevertheless, we still observe two minima in the thermopower indicative of weak residual Kondo scattering. This is in line with results from photo emission spectroscopy revealing a tiny contribution from Yb$^{2+}$. The value at the high-$T$ minimum in $S(T)$ is found to be proportional to the Sommerfeld coefficient for the whole series. Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were performed on CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ in the presence of a magnetic field close to the upper critical field $\mu_{0} H_{\rm c2}$ in order to investigate its superconducting (SC) properties near pair-breaking fields. In lower fields, the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ abruptly decreased below the SC transition temperature $T_{\rm c}(H)$, a phenomenon understood within the framework of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity. In contrast, $1/T_1T$ was enhanced just below $T_{\rm c}(H)$ and exhibited a broad maximum when magnetic fields close to $\mu_0H_{\rm c2}(0)$ were applied parallel or perpendicular to the $c$ axis, although the Knight shift decreased just below $T_{\rm c}(H)$. This enhancement of $1/T_1T$, which was recently observed in the organic superconductor $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$, suggests the presence of high-density Andreev bound states in the inhomogeneous SC region, a hallmark of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

In this paper the low-temperature properties of two isostructural canonical heavy-fermion compounds are contrasted with regards to the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality and superconductivity. For CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, fully-gapped d-wave superconductivity forms in the vicinity of an itinerant three-dimensional heavy-fermion spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum critical point (QCP). Inelastic neutron scattering results highlight that both quantum critical SDW fluctuations as well as Mott-type fluctuations of local magnetic moments contribute to the formation of Cooper pairs in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. In YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, superconductivity appears to be suppressed at $T\gtrsim~10$ mK by AF order ($T_N$ = 70 mK). Ultra-low temperature measurements reveal a hybrid order between nuclear and 4f-electronic spins, which is dominated by the Yb-derived nuclear spins, to develop at $T_A$ slightly above 2 mK. The hybrid order turns out to strongly compete with the primary 4f-electronic order and to push the material towards its QCP. Apparently, this paves the way for heavy-fermion superconductivity to form at $T_c$ = 2 mK. Like the pressure - induced QCP in CeRhIn$_5$, the magnetic field - induced one in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is of the local Kondo-destroying variety which corresponds to a Mott-type transition at zero temperature. Therefore, these materials form the link between the large family of about fifty low-$T$ unconventional heavy - fermion superconductors and other families of unconventional superconductors with higher $T_c$s, notably the doped Mott insulators of the cuprates, organic charge-transfer salts and some of the Fe-based superconductors. Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 is a model system to address two challenging problems in the field of strongly correlated electron systems: The first is the intriguing competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order when approaching a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP). The second is the occurrence of magnetic order along a very hard crystalline electric field (CEF) direction, i.e. along the one with the smallest available magnetic moment. Here, we present a detailed study of the evolution of the magnetic order in this system from a FM state with moments along the very hard c direction at x = 0.27 towards the yet unknown magnetic state at x = 0. We first observe a transition towards an AFM canted state with decreasing x and then to a pure AFM state. This confirms that the QCP in YbRh2Si2 is AFM, but the phase diagram is very similar to those observed in some inherently FM systems like NbFe2 and CeRuPO, which suggests that the basic underlying instability might be FM. Despite the huge CEF anisotropy the ordered moment retains a component along the c-axis also in the AFM state. The huge CEF anisotropy in Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 excludes that this hard-axis ordering originates from a competing exchange anisotropy as often proposed for other heavy-fermion systems. The Kondo-lattice compound CeRhIn$_5$ displays a field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction at $B^*\approx30$ T, which occurs within the antiferromagnetic state, prior to the quantum critical point at $B_{c0}\approx50$ T. Here, in order to investigate the nature of the Fermi surface change, we measured the magnetostriction, specific heat, and magnetic torque of CeRhIn$_5$ across a wide range of magnetic fields. Our observations uncover the field-induced itineracy of the $4f$ electrons, where above $B_{\rm onset}\approx17$ T there is a significant enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient, and spin-dependent effective cyclotron masses determined from quantum oscillations. Upon crossing $B_{\rm onset}$, the temperature dependence of the specific heat also shows distinctly different behavior from that at low fields. Our results indicate that the Kondo coupling is remarkably robust upon increasing the magnetic field. Strong electron correlations can give rise to extraordinary properties of metals with renormalized quasiparticles which are at the basis of Landau's Fermi liquid theory. Near a quantum critical point, these quasiparticles can be destroyed and non-Fermi liquid behavior ensues. YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is a prototypical correlated metal as it exhibits quasiparticles formation, formation of Kondo lattice coherence and quasiparticle destruction at a field-induced quantum critical point. Here we show how, upon lowering the temperature, the Kondo lattice coherence develops and finally gives way to non-Fermi liquid electronic excitations. By measuring the single-particle excitations through scanning tunneling spectroscopy down to 0.3 K, we find the Kondo lattice peak emerging below the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K} \sim$ 25 K, yet this peak displays a non-trivial temperature dependence with a strong increase around 3.3 K. At the lowest temperature and as a function of an external magnetic field, the width of this peak is minimized in the quantum critical regime. Our results provide a striking demonstration of the non-Fermi liquid electronic excitations in quantum critical metals, thereby elucidating the strange-metal phenomena that have been ubiquitously observed in strongly correlated electron materials., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The manifestation of Weyl fermions in strongly correlated electron systems is of particular interest. We report evidence for Weyl fermions in the heavy fermion semimetal YbPtBi from electronic structure calculations, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magnetotransport and calorimetric measurements. At elevated temperatures where $4f$-electrons are localized, there are triply degenerate points, yielding Weyl nodes in applied magnetic fields. These are revealed by a contribution from the chiral anomaly in the magnetotransport, which at low temperatures becomes negligible due to the influence of electronic correlations. Instead, Weyl fermions are inferred from the topological Hall effect, which provides evidence for a Berry curvature, and a cubic temperature dependence of the specific heat, as expected from the linear dispersion near the Weyl nodes. The results suggest that YbPtBi is a Weyl heavy fermion semimetal, where the Kondo interaction renormalizes the bands hosting Weyl points. Topological insulators give rise to exquisite electronic properties due to their spin-momentum locked Dirac-cone-like band structure. Recently, it has been suggested that the required opposite parities between valence and conduction band along with strong spin-orbit coupling can be realized in correlated materials. Particularly, SmB$_6$ has been proposed as candidate material for a topological Kondo insulator. By utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements down to 0.35 K, we observed several states within the hybridization gap of about $\pm$20 meV on well characterized (001) surfaces of SmB$_6$. The spectroscopic response to impurities and magnetic fields allows to distinguish between dominating bulk and surface contributions to these states. The surface contributions develop particularly strongly below about 7 K which can be understood in terms of a breakdown of the Kondo effect at the surface. Our high-resolution data provide detailed insight into the electronic structure of SmB$_6$, which will reconcile many current discrepancies on this compound.

Materials where the electronic bands have unusual topologies allow for the realization of novel physics and have a wide range of potential applications. When two electronic bands with linear dispersions intersect at a point, the excitations could be described as Weyl fermions which are massless particles with a particular chirality. Here we report evidence for the presence of Weyl fermions in the ferromagnetic state of the low-carrier density, strongly correlated Kondo lattice system CeSb, from electronic structure calculations and angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements. When the applied magnetic field is parallel to the electric current, a pronounced negative magnetoresistance is observed within the ferromagnetic state, which is destroyed upon slightly rotating the field away. The site-diluted compound (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ is a scarce realization of the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet partitioned into finite-size segments and is an ideal model compound for studying field-dependent effects of quenched disorder in the one-dimensional antiferromagnets. It differentiates from the systems studied so far in two aspects - the type of randomness and the nature of the energy gap in the pure sample. We have measured the specific heat of single-crystal (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 19.5 T. The contribution $C_{\perp}$ arising from the magnetic subsystem in an applied magnetic field perpendicular to the chains is determined. Compared to pure Yb$_4$As$_3$, for which $C_{\perp}$ indicates a gap opening, for diluted systems a non-exponential decay is found at low temperatures which is consistent with the thermodynamic scaling of the specific heat established for a Bose-glass phase., Comment: 8 pages, 17 figures, including supplemental material, accepted for PRB rapid communication

We address the origin of the magnetic-field independent -|A| T^{1/2} term observed in the low-temperature resistivity of several As-based metallic systems of the PbFCl structure type. For the layered compound ZrAs_{1.58}Se_{0.39}, we show that vacancies in the square nets of As give rise to the low-temperature transport anomaly over a wide temperature regime of almost two decades in temperature. This low-temperature behavior is in line with the non-magnetic version of the two-channel Kondo effect, whose origin we ascribe to a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect operating at the vacancy-carrying As layer with a C_4 symmetry. The pair-breaking nature of the dynamical defects in the square nets of As explains the low superconducting transition temperature T_{\rm{c}}\approx 0.14 K of ZrAs_{1.58}Se_{0.39}, as compared to the free-of-vacancies homologue ZrP_{1.54}S_{0.46} (T_{\rm{c}}\approx 3.7 K). The nature of the pairing states of superconducting LaNiC$_2$ and LaNiGa$_2$ has to date remained a puzzling question. Broken time reversal symmetry has been observed in both compounds and a group theoretical analysis implies a non-unitary triplet pairing state. However all the allowed non-unitary triplet states have nodal gap functions but most thermodynamic and NMR measurements indicate fully gapped superconductivity in LaNiC$_2$. Here we probe the gap symmetry of LaNiGa$_2$ by measuring the London penetration depth, specific heat and upper critical field. These measurements demonstrate two-gap nodeless superconductivity in LaNiGa$_2$, suggesting that this is a common feature of both compounds. These results allow us to propose a novel triplet superconducting state, where the pairing occurs between electrons of the same spin, but on different orbitals. In this case the superconducting wavefunction has a triplet spin component but isotropic even parity gap symmetry, yet the overall wavefunction remains antisymmetric under particle exchange. This model leads to a nodeless two-gap superconducting state which breaks time reversal symmetry, and therefore accounts well for the seemingly contradictory experimental results., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The nature of the pairing symmetry of the first heavy fermion superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has recently become the subject of controversy. While CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ was generally believed to be a $d$-wave superconductor, recent low temperature specific heat measurements showed evidence for fully gapped superconductivity, contrary to the nodal behavior inferred from earlier results. Here we report London penetration depth measurements, which also reveal fully gapped behavior at very low temperatures. To explain these seemingly conflicting results, we propose a fully gapped $d+d$ band-mixing pairing state for CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, which yields very good fits to both the superfluid density and specific heat, as well as accounting for a sign change of the superconducting order parameter, as previously concluded from inelastic neutron scattering results., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures including Supplemental material. SmB$_6$, a so called Kondo insulator, is recently discussed as a candidate material for a strong topological insulator. We present detailed atomically resolved topographic information on the (001) surface from more than a dozen SmB$_6$ samples. Atomically flat, {\it in situ} cleaved surfaces often exhibit B- and Sm-terminated surfaces as well as reconstructed and non-reconstructed areas {\it coexisting} on different length scales. The terminations are unambiguously identified. In addition, electronic inhomogeneities are observed which likely result from the polar nature of the (001) surface and may indicate an inhomogeneous Sm valence at the surface of SmB$_6$. 71Ga NQR, magnetization and specific heat measurements have been performed on polycrystalline Ge doped FeGa3 samples. A crossover from an insulator to a correlated local moment metal in the low doping regime and the evolution of itinerant ferromagnet upon further doping is found. For the nearly critical concentration at the threshold of ferromagnetic order, xC=0.15, (1/T1T) exhibits a pronounced T4/3 power law over two orders of magnitude in temperature which indicates 3D quantum critical ferromagnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, for the ordered x = 0.2 sample (TC = 6 K) 1/T1T could be fitted well in the frame of Moriya's SCR theory for weakly FM systems with 1/T1T proportional to chi. In contrast to this, the low doping regime nicely displays local moment behavior where 1/T1T proportional to chi2 is valid. For temperature tending to zero the Sommerfeld ratio = (C/T) is enhanced (70 mJ/mole-K2 for x = 0.1) which indicates the formation of heavy 3d-electrons., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The superconducting pairing state of LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is studied by measuring the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T,B)$ and the superfluid density $\rho_s(T)$ using a tunnel-diode-oscillator (TDO)-based method and by transverse field muon-spin rotation ($\mu$SR) spectroscopy. $\lambda(T)$ follows an exponential-type temperature dependence at $T\ll T_{c}$, but its zero-temperature value $\lambda(0)$ increases linearly with magnetic field. Detailed analyses demonstrate that both $\lambda(T)$ and the corresponding $\rho_{s}(T)$, measured in the Meissner state by the TDO method are well described by a two-gap $\gamma$ model with gap sizes of $\Delta_1(0)=1.31k_{B}T_c$ and $\Delta_2(0)=1.80k_{B}T_c$ and a very weak interband coupling. In contrast, $\rho_s(T)$, derived from the $\mu \rm{SR}$ data taken in a small field, can be fitted by a single-gap BCS model with a gap close to $\Delta_2(0)$. We conclude that LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is a marginal two-gap superconductor and the small gap $\Delta_1$ seems to be destroyed by a small magnetic field. In comparison, in PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ the $4f$-electrons may enhance the interband coupling and, therefore, give rise to more robust multiband superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Heavy fermion metals provide a prototype setting to study quantum criticality. Experimentally, quantum critical points have been identified and studied in a growing list of heavy fermion compounds. Theoretically, Kondo destruction has provided a means to characterize a class of unconventional quantum critical points that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations. Among the prominent evidence for such local quantum criticality have been measurements in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. A rapid crossover is observed at finite temperatures in the isothermal field dependence of the Hall coefficient and other transport and thermodynamic quantities, which specifies a $T^*(B)$ line in the temperature ($T$)-magnetic field ($B$) phase diagram. Here, we discuss what happens when temperature is raised, by analyzing the ratio of the crossover width to the crossover position. With this ratio approaching unity at $T \gtrsim 0.5$ K, YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ at zero magnetic field belongs to the quantum-critical fluctuation regime, where the single-particle spectral function has significant spectral weight at both the small and large Fermi surfaces. This implies that, in this temperature range, any measurements sensitive to the Fermi surface will also see a significant spectral weight at the large Fermi surface. The angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments recently reported for YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ at $T>1$ K are consistent with this expectation, and therefore support the association of the $T^*(B)$ line with the physics of Kondo destruction., Comment: submitted to proceedings of ICM15

Conventional, thermally-driven continuous phase transitions are described by universal critical behaviour that is independent of the specific microscopic details of a material. However, many current studies focus on materials that exhibit quantum-driven continuous phase transitions (quantum critical points, or QCPs) at absolute zero temperature. The classification of such QCPs and the question of whether they show universal behaviour remain open issues. Here we report measurements of heat capacity and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic QCP (B$_{c0}\simeq$ 50 T) in the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn$_5$. A sharp, magnetic-field-induced change in Fermi surface is detected both in the dHvA effect and Hall resistivity at B$_0^*\simeq$ 30 T, well inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Comparisons with band-structure calculations and properties of isostructural CeCoIn$_5$ suggest that the Fermi-surface change at B$_0^*$ is associated with a localized to itinerant transition of the Ce-4f electrons in CeRhIn$_5$. Electron-like carriers in bismuth are described by the Dirac Hamiltonian, with a band mass becoming a thousandth of the bare electron mass along one crystalline axis. The existence of three anisotropic valleys offers electrons an additional degree of freedom, a subject of recent attention. Here, we map the Landau spectrum by angle-resolved magnetostriction, and quantify the carrier number in each valley: while the electron valleys keep identical spectra, they substantially differ in their density of states at the Fermi level. Thus, the electron fluid does not keep the rotational symmetry of the lattice at low temperature and high magnetic field, even in the absence of internal strain. This effect, reminiscent of the Coulomb pseudo-gap in localized electronic states, affects only electrons in the immediate vicinity of the Fermi level. We present magnetization, specific heat, and 27Al NMR investigations on YbFe2Al10 over a wide range in temperature and magnetic field. The magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures is strongly enhanced at weak magnetic fields, accompanied by a ln(T0/T) divergence of the low-T specific heat coefficient in zero field, which indicates a ground state of correlated electrons. From our hard X-ray photo emission spectroscopy (HAXPES) study, the Yb valence at 50 K is evaluated to be 2.38. The system displays valence fluctuating behavior in the low to intermediate temperature range, whereas above 400 K, Yb3+ carries a full and stable moment, and Fe carries a moment of about 3.1 mB. The enhanced value of the Sommerfeld Wilson ratio and the dynamic scaling of spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by T [27(1/T1T)] with static susceptibility suggests admixed ferromagnetic correlations. 27(1/T1T) simultaneously tracks the valence fluctuations from the 4f -Yb ions in the high temperature range and field dependent antiferromagnetic correlations among partially Kondo screened Fe 3d moments at low temperature, the latter evolve out of an Yb 4f admixed conduction band., Comment: To appear in Phys. We present research on the superconducting properties of Nb$_{x}$Re$_{1-x}$ ($x$ = 0.13-0.38) obtained by measuring the electrical resistivity $\rho(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, specific heat $C_P(T)$, and London penetration depth $\Delta\lambda(T)$. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ decreases monotonically with an increase of $x$. The upper critical field $B_{c2}(T)$ for various $x$ can be nicely scaled by its corresponding $T_c$. The electronic specific heat $C_e(T)/T$, penetration depth $\Delta\lambda(T)$, and superfluid density $\rho_{s}(T)$ demonstrate exponential behavior at low temperatures and can be well fitted by a one-gap BCS model. The residual Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma_0(B)$ in the superconducting state follows a linear field dependence. All these properties suggest an \emph{s}-wave BCS-type of superconductivity with a very large $B_{c2}(0)$ for Nb$_{x}$Re$_{1-x}$ (0.13 $\leq x \leq$ 0.38)., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We report low-temperature specific heat, $C(T)$, measurements on (Yb$_{1-x}$Lu$_x$)$_4$As$_3$ with $x=0.01$ and $x=0.03$, where nonmagnetic Lu atoms are randomly distributed on antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chains with $J/k_{\mathrm B}=28$ K. The observed reduction of $C$ below 15 K with increasing $x$ is accurately described by quantum transfer matrix simulations without any adjustable parameter, implying that the system is an excellent experimental realization of segmented quantum spin chains. Finite-size effects consistent with conformal-field theory predictions are leading to the formation of an effective low-energy gap. The size of the gap increases with Lu content and accounts for the impurity driven reduction of the specific heat. For both concentrations our results verify experimentally the low temperature scaling behavior established theoretically and also confirm the value of $J$ determined from pure Yb$_4$As$_3$., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We present results of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STS) measurements on the "Kondo insulator" SmB$_6$. The vast majority of surface areas investigated was reconstructed but, infrequently, also patches of varying size of non-reconstructed, Sm- or B-terminated surfaces were found. On the smallest patches, clear indications for the hybridization gap and inter-multiplet transitions were observed. On non-reconstructed surface areas large enough for coherent co-tunneling we were able to observe clear-cut Fano resonances. Our locally resolved STS indicated considerable finite conductance on all surfaces independent of their structure., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A quantum critical point (QCP) arises at a continuous transition between competing phases at zero temperature. Collective excitations at magnetic QCPs give rise to metallic properties that strongly deviate from the expectations of Landau's Fermi liquid description, the standard theory of electron correlations in metals. Central to this theory is the notion of quasiparticles, electronic excitations which possess the quantum numbers of the bare electrons. Here we report measurements of thermal and electrical transport across the field-induced magnetic QCP in the heavy-fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. We show that the ratio of the thermal to electrical conductivities at the zero-temperature limit obeys the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law above the critical field, $B_c$. This is also expected at $B < B_c$, where weak antiferromagnetic order and a Fermi liquid phase form below 0.07 K ($B = 0$). However, at the critical field the low-temperature electrical conductivity suggests a non-Fermi-liquid ground state and exceeds the thermal conductivity by about 10%. This apparent violation of the WF law provides evidence for an unconventional type of QCP at which the fundamental concept of Landau quasiparticles breaks down. These results imply that Landau quasiparticles break up, and that the origin of this disintegration is inelastic scattering associated with electronic quantum critical fluctuations. We study the effect of magnetic fields up to 15 T on the heavy fermion state of YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ via Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements down to 50 mK. Our data show anomalies at three different characteristic fields. We compare our data to renormalized band structure calculations through which we identify Lifshitz transitions associated with the heavy fermion bands. The Hall measurements indicate that the de-renormalization of the quasiparticles, {\it i.e} the destruction of the local Kondo singlets, occurs smoothly while the Lifshitz transitions occur within rather confined regions of the magnetic field., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The results for the charge dynamics indicate a behavior that is expected for the formation of a coherent heavy quasiparticle state: Upon cooling the spectra of the optical conductivity indicate a narrowing of the coherent response. Below temperatures of 30 K a considerable suppression of conductivity evolves below a peak structure at 13 meV. We report measurements of the London penetration depth $\Delta\lambda(T)$ and the electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$ on high-quality single crystals of the filled-skutterudite superconductor PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ ($T_c\simeq$8K). Both quantities show a weak temperature dependence at $T\ll T_c$, following $\Delta\lambda\sim T^n$ ($n\simeq 3.2$) and $C_e/T\sim T^{2.8}$. Such temperature dependences deviate from both conventional s-wave type and nodal superconductivity. A detailed analysis indicates that the superfluid density $\rho_s(T)$, derived from the penetration depth, as well as the electronic specific heat can be consistently described in terms of a two-gap model, providing strong evidence of multiband superconductivity for PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Cerium 4f electronic spin dynamics in single crystals of the heavy-fermion system CeFePO is studied by means of ac-susceptibility, specific heat and muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR). Short-range static magnetism occurs below the freezing temperature Tg ~ 0.7 K, which prevents the system from accessing the putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point. In the $\mu$SR, the sample-averaged muon asymmetry function is dominated by strongly inhomogeneous spin fluctuations below 10 K and exhibits a characteristic time-field scaling relation expected from glassy spin dynamics, strongly evidencing cooperative and critical spin fluctuations. We present the discovery of ferromagnetism in single crystalline Yb(Rh$_{0.73}$Co$_{0.27}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ below $T_{C} = 1.30\,$K with a spontaneous magnetic moment of $0.1\,\mu_{B}$/Yb along the crystallographic c-axis. This is shown by the huge c-susceptibility peak, the hysteresis in magnetization as well as by the field-dependent susceptibility and specific heat data. This discovery motivates the reinvestigation of the magnetic order in Yb(Rh$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ with $x < 0.27$ and in pure YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under small pressures with field along the $c$-direction to look for low-lying ferromagnetic order., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The heavy fermion systems present a unique platform in which strong electronic correlations give rise to a host of novel, and often competing, electronic and magnetic ground states. Amongst a number of potential experimental tools at our disposal, measurements of the Hall effect have emerged as a particularly important one in discerning the nature and evolution of the Fermi surfaces of these enigmatic metals. In this article, we present a comprehensive review of Hall effect measurements in the heavy-fermion materials, and examine the success it has had in contributing to our current understanding of strongly correlated matter. Particular emphasis is placed on its utility in the investigation of quantum critical phenomena which are thought to drive many of the exotic electronic ground states in these systems. This is achieved by the description of measurements of the Hall effect across the putative zero-temperature instability in the archetypal heavy-fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. Using the Ce$M$In$_5$ (with $M =$ Co, Ir) family of systems as a paradigm, the influence of (antiferro-)magnetic fluctuations on the Hall effect is also illustrated. This is compared to prior Hall effect measurements in the cuprates and other strongly correlated systems to emphasize on the generality of the unusual magnetotransport in materials with non-Fermi liquid behavior., Comment: manuscript accepted in Adv. We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR investigations on YFe2Al10 over a wide range in temperature and magnetic field and zero field (NQR) measurements. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by T (1/T1T) follow a weak power law (T^-0.4) temperature dependence, which is a signature of critical fluctuations of Fe moments. The value of the Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio and linear relation between 1/T1T and chi(T) suggest the existence of ferromagnetic correlations in this system. No magnetic ordering down to 50 mK in Cp(T) and the unusual temperature and field scaling of the bulk and NMR data are associated with a magnetic instability which drives the system to quantum criticality. The magnetic properties of the system are tuned by field wherein ferromagnetic fluctuations are suppressed and a crossover from quantum critical to FL behavior is observed with increasing magnetic field.

The filled-skutterudite compound CePt4Ge12 is situated close to the border between intermediate-valence of Ce and heavy-fermion behavior. Substitution of Ge by Sb drives the system into a strongly correlated and ultimately upon further increasing the Sb concentration into an antiferromagnetically ordered state. Our experiments evidence a delicate interplay of emerging Kondo physics and the formation of a local 4f moment. An extended non-Fermi-liquid region, which can be understood in the framework of a Kondo-disorder model, is observed. Band-structure calculations support the conclusion that the physical properties are governed by the interplay of electron supply via Sb substitution and the concomitant volume effects., Comment: 5 pages, 3 Figure

Kondo insulators and in particular their non-cubic representatives have remained poorly understood. Here we report on the development of an anisotropic energy pseudogap in the tetragonal compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ employing optical reflectivity measurements in broad frequency and temperature ranges, and local density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory calculations. The calculations provide evidence for a Kondo insulator-like response within the $a-a$ plane and a more metallic response along the c axis and qualitatively reproduce the experimental observations, helping to identify their origin.

We have investigated the influence of Fe-excess on the electrical transport and magnetism of Fe1+yTe0.5Se0.5 (y=0.04 and 0.09) single crystals. Both compositions exhibit resistively determined superconducting transitions (Tc) with an onset temperature of about 15 K. From the width of the superconducting transition and the magnitude of the lower critical field Hc1, it is inferred that excess of Fe suppresses superconductivity. The linear and non-linear responses of the ac-susceptibility show that the superconducting state for these compositions is inhomogeneous. A possible origin of this phase separation is a magnetic coupling between Fe-excess occupying interstitial sites in the chalcogen planes and those in the Fe-square lattice. The temperature derivative of the resistivity drho/dT in the temperature range Tc < T < Ta with Ta being the temperature of a magnetic anomaly, changes from positive to negative with increasing Fe. A log 1/T divergence of the resistivity above Tc in the sample with higher amount of Fe suggests a disorder driven electronic localization., Comment: 7 pages

Superconductivity in lanthanide- and actinide-based heavy-fermion metals can have different microscopic origins. Among others, Cooper pair formation based on fluctuations of the valence, of the quadrupole moment or of the spin of the localized 4f/5f shell have been proposed. Spin-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 was demonstrated by inelastic neutron scattering to exist in the vicinity of a spin-density-wave quantum critical point. The isostructural HF compound YbRh2Si2 which is prototypical for a Kondo-breakdown quantum critical point has so far not shown any sign of superconductivity down to approximately 10mK. In contrast, results of de-Haas-van-Alphen experiments by Shishido et al. (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74, 1103 (2005)) suggest superconductivity in CeRhIn5 close to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point beyond the spin-density-wave type, at which the Kondo effect breaks down. For the related compound CeCoIn5 however, a field-induced quantum critical point of spin-density-wave type is extrapolated to exist inside the superconducting phase., Comment: invited paper at the Materials & Mechanisms of Superconductivity (M2S) 2012

We study the superconducting properties of the non-centrosymmetric compound LaNiC$_2$ by measuring the London penetration depth $\Delta \lambda (T)$, the specific heat $C(T,B)$ and the electrical resistivity $\rho (T,B)$. Both $\Delta\lambda (T)$ and the electronic specific heat $C_e(T)$ exhibit exponential behavior at low temperatures and can be described in terms of a phenomenological two-gap BCS model. The residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state, $\gamma_0(B)$, shows a fast increase at low fields and then an eventual saturation with increasing magnetic field. A pronounced upturn curvature is observed in the upper critical field $B_{c2}(T)$ near $T_{c}$. In Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 137002 (2011), A. Hackl and M. Vojta have proposed to explain the quantum critical behavior of YbRh2Si2 in terms of a Zeeman-induced Lifshitz transition of an electronic band whose width is about 6 orders of magnitude smaller than that of conventional metals. Here, we note that the ultra-narrowness of the proposed band, as well as the proposed scenario per se, lead to properties which are qualitatively inconsistent with the salient features observed in YbRh2Si2 near its quantum critical point., Comment: 3 pages

We have investigated the optical conductivity of the prominent valence fluctuating compounds EuIr2Si2 and EuNi2P2 in the infrared energy range to get new insights into the electronic properties of valence fluctuating systems. For both compounds we observe upon cooling the formation of a renormalized Drude response, a partial suppression of the optical conductivity below 100 meV and the appearance of a mid-infrared peak at 0.15 eV for EuIr2Si2 and at 0.13 eV for EuNi2P2. Most remarkably, our results show a strong similarity with the optical spectra reported for many Ce- or Yb-based heavy fermion metals and intermediate valence systems, although the phase diagrams and the temperature dependence of the valence differ strongly between Eu- and Ce-/Yb-systems. This suggests that the hybridization between 4f- and conduction electrons, which is responsible for the properties of Ce- and Yb-systems, plays an important role in valence fluctuating Eu-systems.

We have successfully determined the hitherto unknown sign of the B44 Stevens crystal-field parameter of the tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeCu2Si2 using vector q dependent non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) experiments at the cerium N4,5 edge. The observed difference between the two different directions q||[100] and q||[110] is due to the anisotropy of the crystal-field ground state in the (001) plane and is observable only because of the utilization of higher than dipole transitions possible in NIXS. This approach allows us to go beyond the specific limitations of dc magnetic susceptibility, inelastic neutron scattering, and soft x-ray spectroscopy, and provides us with a reliable information about the orbital state of the 4f electrons relevant for the quantitative modeling of the quasi-particles and their interactions in heavy-fermion systems.

A detailed study of the spin dynamics of the S-state ions Gd3+ and Eu2+ in the filled skutterudites La1-xRxPt4Ge12 (R= Gd, Eu) is reported. We carried out specific-heat and ac-susceptibility experiments under hydrostatic pressure to investigate the interplay of spin-density-wave antiferromagnetism (A) and superconductivity (S) in single-crystalline AS-type CeCu2Si2. We find evidence for a line of magnetic-field- and pressure-tuned quantum critical points in the normal state in the zero-temperature magnetic field-pressure plane. Our analysis suggests an extension of this line into the superconducting state and corroborates the close connection of the underlying mechanisms leading to the formation of the antiferromagnetic and the superconducting states in AS-type CeCu2Si2., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have studied the effect of Ge substitution and pressure on the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si. Ge substitution on the Si site acts as negative chemical pressure leading to an increase in the unit-cell volume but also introduces chemical disorder. We carried out electrical resistivity and ac heat-capacity experiments under hydrostatic pressure on CePt3Si1-xGex (x=0, 0.06). Our experiments show that the suppression of superconductivity in CePt3Si1-xGex is mainly caused by the scattering potential, rather than volume expansion, introduced by the Ge dopants.
