The ubiquitous nature of smartphone ownership, its broad application and usage, along with its interactive delivery of timely feedback are appealing for health-related behavior change interventions via mobile apps. However, users’ perspectives about such apps are vital in better bridging the gap between their design intention and effective practical usage. In this vein, a modified technology acceptance model (mTAM) is proposed here, to explain the relationship between users’ perspectives when using an AI-based smartphone app for personalized nutrition and healthy living, namely PROTEIN, and the mTAM constructs towards behavior change in their nutrition and physical activity habits. In particular, online survey data from 85 users of the PROTEIN app within a period of two months, were subjected to regression analysis to reveal the relationship of the mTAM constructs, i.e., perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEoU), perceived novelty (PN), perceived personalization (PP), usage attitude (UA), and usage intention (UI) with the users’ behavior change (BC), as expressed via the acceptance/rejection of six related hypotheses (H1-H6), respectively. The regression results have shown that all hypotheses H1-H6 can be accepted (), exhibiting adjusted coefficient of determination () within the range of 0.224-0.732, justifying the positive effect of PU, PEoU, PN, and PP on the UA, that in turn positively affects the UI, leading to the BC. The explored mTAM framework provides the means for explaining the role of each construct in the functionality of the PROTEIN app as a supportive tool for the users to improve their healthy living by adopting behavior change in their dietary and physical activity habits. The findings herein offer insights and references for formulating new strategies and policies to improve the collaboration among app designers, developers, behavior scientists, nutritionists, physical activity/exercise physiologists experts and marketing experts for app design/development towards behavior change.

Adoption of e-learning for those with special needs lags that for mainstream learners. Not much is known about barriers and facilitators that drive this disparity. The present study used focus groups and interviews to collect the views of 21 teachers taking part in preliminary evaluations of an adaptive learning system based on multimodal affect recognition for students with learning disabilities and autism. The system uses multimodal detection of affective state and scoring of performance to drive its adaptive selection of learning material. Five themes captured the teachers’ views of the system’s potential impact, especially regarding learning and engagement but also on factors that might influence adoption. These were: the potential of the system to transform their teaching practice; the ability of the system to impact on learning outcomes; the potential impact on teacher-student/peer to peer relationships; usability issues; and organisational challenges. Despite being highly motivated as volunteer testers, teachers highlighted barriers to adoption, which will need addressing. This finding underscores the importance of involving teachers and students in the design and development process.

Artificial intelligence tools for education (AIEd) have been used to automate the provision of learning support to mainstream learners. One of the most innovative approaches in this field is the use of data and machine learning for the detection of a student's affective state, to move them out of negative states that inhibit learning, into positive states such as engagement. In spite of their obvious potential to provide the personalisation that would give extra support for learners with intellectual disabilities, little work on AIEd systems that utilise affect recognition currently addresses this group. Our system used multimodal sensor data and machine learning to first identify three affective states linked to learning (engagement, frustration, boredom) and second determine the presentation of learning content so that the learner is maintained in an optimal affective state and rate of learning is maximised. To evaluate this adaptive learning system, 67 participants aged between 6 and 18 years acting as their own control took part in a series of sessions using the system. Sessions alternated between using the system with both affect detection and learning achievement to drive the selection of learning content (intervention) and using learning achievement alone (control) to drive the selection of learning content. Lack of boredom was the state with the strongest link to achievement, with both frustration and engagement positively related to achievement. There was significantly more engagement and less boredom in intervention than control sessions, but no significant difference in achievement. These results suggest that engagement does increase when activities are tailored to the personal needs and emotional state of the learner and that the system was promoting affective states that in turn promote learning. However, longer exposure is necessary to determine the effect on learning.

In today's multicultural world, where the meeting of different cultures breeds suspicion and division, the school has the responsibility to provide adequate support so that every person develop an open and aware identity. The community is a space of identity developed through the idea and the perception of being part of a group of persons that believe in the same objectives and ideals. The development of a community of teachers within a project focused on the gamification of prosocial learning for increased youth inclusion and academic achievement, allows us to analyse in depth the social and the pedagogical aspects that lies underneath the structure of a community. The teachers are the core elements and they will be guided by the project partners through the different steps of the community building: the sharing of the values, then the practices and finally the actions, in a path that will grant the fruitful growth of such community.

The resulted CFA-related parameters, i.e., factor loading (FL) with the related p-value, average variance extracted (AVE), and composite reliability (CR), along with the RA results, have shown that all hypotheses H1–H6 can be accepted (p < 0.001). In particular, it was found that, in all cases, FL > 0.5, CR > 0.7, AVE > 0.5, indicating that the items/constructs within the mTAM framework have good convergent validity. Moreover, the adjusted coefficient of determination (R2) was found within the range of 0.224–0.732, justifying the positive effect of PU, PEoU, PN, and PP on the UA, that in turn positively affects the UI, leading to the BC. Additionally, using a hierarchical RA, a significant change in the prediction of BC from UA when the UI is used as a mediating variable was identified. The explored mTAM framework provides the means for explaining the role of each construct in the functionality of the PROTEIN app as a supportive tool for the users to improve their healthy living by adopting behavior change in their dietary and physical activity habits.
