Contains fulltext : 48323.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) The causes of metabolic brain changes in patients with anorexia nervosa are still not fully explained. The purpose of this study was to use the 1H-MRS method in investigating metabolic changes in the brain of patients with anorexia nervosa. We studied 10 patients for visible alternations in brain metabolism and compared the results to healthy controls. 1H-MRS was acquired by the method of single voxels in white and grey matter. Proton MRS was performed after image guided localization using stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM) sequence with a short echo time of 20 ms. For data evaluation we used standard Siemens software and the additional PC. Choosing of the MRS sequences was related with particular interest in metabolites of short time echo: myoinositol and lipids. Besides this we evaluated peaks of: N-acetylaspartate (NAN), creatine (Cr) and choline (Cho). The results show significant differences in the levels of metabolites connected with fatty metabolism. In white matter we observed the reduction of lip-peak. The data was evaluated approximately and presented as lip:Cr. We did not observe any differences in other metabolites. As far as we know similar results had been reported and our study confirmed significant disorders in metabolism of these chemicals in patients with anorexia nervosa.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to prove the concept of using a long intravenous half-life blood-pool T1 contrast agent as a new functional imaging method. For each of ten healthy subjects, two dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) protocols were carried out: (1) a reference run with a typical T2* echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence based on the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) effect and (2) a run with a T1-sensitive three-dimensional (3D) gradient-echo (GRE) sequence using cerebral blood volume (CBV) contrast after intravenous administration of a contrast agent containing a chelate of gadolinium diethylene-triamine-pentaacetate with a phosphono-oxymethyl substituent. All sequences were performed during the execution of a block-type finger-tapping paradigm. SPM5 software was used for statistical analysis. For both runs maximum activations (peak Z-score = 5.5, cluster size 3,449 voxels) were localized in the left postcentral gyrus. Visual inspection of respective signal amplitudes suggests the T1 contrast to be substantially smaller than EPI (0.5% vs 1%). A new functional imaging method with potentially smaller image artefacts due to the nature of CBV contrast and characteristics of the T1 sequence was proposed and verified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Congenital anomalies of systemic veins are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally during ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance examinations performed for other clinical indications. Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) with absent right superior vena cava (RSVC) is the congenital aberration in the thoracic venous system which occurs in only 0.09%to 0.13% of patients who have congenital heart defects. In this paper, we present the extremely rare case of a 72-year-old male with PLSVC associated with an absence of RSVC, referred for coronary CT angiography. Multidetector CT angiography is a powerful tool for the detection of venous anomalies, which is essential before invasive procedures such as the implantation of pacemakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Purpose: With the advent of percutaneous transcatheter device closures in congenital heart defects and the emergence of percutaneous left atrial appendage closure, there is an increasingly important role for echocardiographic guidance and control of device position and function. Disc occluder devices frequently present as an unexplained ‘figure-of-8’ on echocardiography. The aim of this study was to clarify this ‘figure-of-8’ display and to relate its morphology to transducer position and device type. Methods: A mathematical model was developed to resemble disc occluder geometry and to allow a numerical simulation of the echocardiographic appearance. In addition, we developed an in vitro set-up for echocardiographic analysis of various disc occluders and various transducer positions. Results: In the mathematical model of an epitrochoid curve (closely resembling disc occluder geometry) a ‘figure-of-8’ display is obtained when emphasizing points with tangent vector perpendicular to the direction of ultrasound waves. Decreasing imaging depth results in a more asymmetric ‘figure-of-8’, with small upper part and wide lower part. Clinical and in vitro data are in close agreement with these results (Figure 1). Furthermore a ‘figure-of-8’ display is only obtained in a coronal imaging position, and is similar for different commercially available disc occluder types. Conclusions: The ‘figure-of-8’ display in the ultrasound image of a disc occluder is an imaging artifact due to the specific ‘epitrochoidal’ geometry of a deployed device and its interaction with ultrasound waves. The morphology of the ‘figure-of-8’ depends on transducer position, i.e. imaging depth, and is similar for different device types.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to create a mathematical approach for blood hemodynamic description with the use of brightness analysis. Medical data was collected from three male patients aged from 45 to 65 years with acute type IIIb aortic dissection that started proximal to the left subclavian artery and involved the renal arteries. For the recognition of wall dissection areas Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data were applied. The distance from descending aorta to the diaphragm was analyzed. Each time Feret (D
F ) and Hydraulic (DHy ) diameter were calculated. Moreover, an average brightness (BAV ) was analyzed. Finally, to describe blood hemodynamic in the area of aortic wall dissection, mathematical function combining difference in brightness value and diameter for each computed tomography (CT) scan was calculated. The results indicated that DF described common duct more accurately compare to DHy . While, DHy described more accurately true and false ducts. Each time when connection of true and false duct appeared, true duct had lower brightness compare to common duct and false duct. Moreover, false duct characterized with higher brightness compare to common duct. In summary, the proposed algorithm mimics changes in brightness value for patients with acute type IIIb aortic dissection., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.- Published

- Abstract
Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), regarded as a generalized vascular disease, may affect all vascular beds and may result in arterial stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm, or dissection. It has been proposed to systematically evaluate all vascular beds in patients with FMD, regardless of initial FMD involvement. However, the impact of this approach on clinical decisions and on management is unknown. Within the prospective ARCADIA-POL study (Assessment of Renal and Cervical Artery Dysplasia-Poland), we evaluated 232 patients with FMD lesions confirmed in at least one vascular bed, out of 343 patients included in the registry. All patients underwent a detailed clinical evaluation including computed tomography angiography of intracranial and cervical arteries, as well as computed tomography angiography of the abdominal aorta, its branches, and upper and lower extremity arteries. In the study group, FMD lesions were most frequently found in renal arteries (87.5%). FMD was also found in cerebrovascular (24.6%), mesenteric (13.8%), and upper (3.0%) and lower extremity (9.9 %) arteries. Newly diagnosed FMD lesions were found in 34.1% of the patients, and previously undetected vascular complications were found in 25% of the patients. Among all FMD patients included in the study, one out of every 4 evaluated patients qualified for interventional treatment due to newly diagnosed FMD lesions or vascular complications. The ARCADIA-POL study shows for the first time that the systematic and multidisciplinary evaluation of patients with FMD based on a whole-body computed tomography angiography scan has an impact on their clinical management. This proved the necessity of the systematic evaluation of all vascular beds in patients with FMD, regardless of initial FMD involvement.

- Abstract
Background: In clinical diagnostics, combination of different imaging techniques is applied to assess spatial configuration of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and deformation of its wall. As deformation of aneurysm wall is crucial parameter in assessing wall rupture, we aimed to develop and validate a Non-Invasive Vision-Based System (NIVBS) for the analysis of 3D elastic artificial abdominal aortic models. 3D-printed elastic AAA models from four patients were applied for the reconstruction of real hemodynamic. During experiments, the inlet boundary conditions included the injection volume and frequency of pulsation averaged from electrocardiography traces. NIVBS system was equipped with nine cameras placed at a constant distance to record wall movement from 360
o angle and a dedicated set of artificial lights providing coherent illumination. Additionally, self-prepared algorithms for image acquisition, processing, segmentation, and contour detection were used to analyze wall deformation. Finally, the shape deformation factor was applied to evaluate aorta's deformation. Experimental results were confronted with medical data from AngioCT and 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography (2DSTE)., Results: Image square analyses indicated that the optimal distance between the camera's lens and the investigated object was in the range of 0.30-0.35 m. There was approximately 1.44% difference observed in aneurysm diameters between NIVBS (86.57 ± 5.86 mm) and AngioCT (87.82 ± 6.04 mm) (p = 0.7764). The accuracy of developed algorithm for the reconstruction of the AAA deformation was equal to 98.56%. Bland-Altman analysis showed that the difference between clinical data (2DSTE) and predicted wall deformation (NIVBS) for all patients was 0.00 mm (confidence interval equal to 0.12 mm) for aneurysm size, 0.01 mm (confidence interval equal to 0.13 mm) and 0.00 mm (confidence interval equal to 0.09 mm) for the anterior and posterior side, as well as 0.01 mm (confidence interval equal to 0.18 mm) and 0.01 mm (confidence interval equal to 0.11 mm) for the left and right side. The optimal range of camera's lens did not affect acquired values., Conclusions: The NIVBS with proposed algorithm that reconstructs the pressure from surrounding organs is appropriate to analyze the AAAs in water environment. Moreover, NIVBS allowed detailed quantitative analysis of aneurysm sac wall deformation.- Published

- Abstract
Objectives: Our goal was to present a novel non-invasive approach for assessment of aortic wall displacement to describe its biomechanical properties during the cardiac cycle., Methods: The fluid-structure interaction (FSI) technique was used to reconstruct aortic wall displacement based on computed tomography angiography and 2-dimensional speckle-tracking technique (2DSTT) data collected from 20 patients [10 with healthy aortas (AA) and 10 with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs)]. The mechanical properties of the wall of the aorta were described by the Yeoh hyperelastic materials model with α and β parameters, and wall displacement was determined with 2DSTT. The mechanical parameters of the wall of the aorta in the FSI model were automatically updated in the calculation loop until the calculated and clinically measured wall movements were the same., Results: Results showed 98% accuracy of FSI compared to 2DSTT for AA and AAA (P > 0.05). The mean wall deformation for AA was 2.45 ± 0.12 mm and 2.49 ± 0.10 mm for FSI and 2DSTT, respectively (P = 0.40), whereas that for AAA was 2.84 ± 0.44 mm and 2.88 ± 0.45 mm, respectively (P = 0.83). The FSI analysis indicated that the α and β parameters for AA were equal to 14.35 ± 1.30 N⋅cm-2 and 9.33 ± 1.08 N⋅cm-2, respectively; and for AAA, α was 11.00 ± 0.49 N⋅cm-2 and β was 79.46 ± 4.32 N⋅cm-2., Conclusions: The FSI technique may be successfully applied to assess the mechanical parameters of patient-specific aortic walls using computed tomography angiographic and 2DSTT measurements.

- Abstract
Background and objectives: Brain ischemic stroke is caused by impaired or absolutely blocked blood flow into the brain regions. Despite the large number of possible origins, there is no general strategy for preventive treatment. In this paper, we aimed to predict the hemodynamics in a patient who experienced a critical stenosis operation in the carotid artery. This is a unique study where we used medical data together with the computational fluid (CFD) technique not to plan the surgery, but to predict its outcome. Materials and Methods: AngioCT data and blood perfusion of brain tissue (CT-perfusion) together with CFD technique were applied for stroke formation reconstruction in different clinical conditions. With the use of self-made semiautomatic algorithm for image processing and 3DDoctror software, 3D-vascular geometries before and after surgical intervention were reconstructed. As the paper is focused on the analysis of stroke appearance, apparent stroke was simulated as higher and lower pressure values in the cranial part due to different outcomes of the surgical intervention. This allowed to investigate the influence of spatial configuration and pressure values on blood perfusion in the analyzed circulatory system. Results: Application of CFD simulations for blood flow reconstruction for clinical conditions in the circulatory system accomplished on average 98.5% and 98.7% accuracy for CFD results compared to US-Doppler before and after surgical intervention, respectively. Meanwhile, CFD results compared to CT-perfusion indicated an average 89.7% and 92.8% accuracy before and after surgical intervention, respectively. Thus, the CFD is a reliable approach for predicting the patient hemodynamics, as it was confirmed by postoperative data. Conclusions: Our study indicated that the application of CFD simulations for blood flow reconstruction for clinical conditions in circulatory system reached 98% and 90% accuracy for US-Doppler and CT-perfusion, respectively. Therefore, the proposed method might be used as a tool for reconstruction of specific patients' hemodynamics after operation of critical stenosis in the carotid artery. However, further studies are necessary to confirm its usefulness in clinical practice.

Hardness, tensile modulus and strength, and compressive modulus and strength were tested too., Results: Deterioration of mechanical properties of the composites containing titanium dioxide was observed [hardness, tensile modulus and strength, compressive modulus and strength, respectively: 56.7 ± 1.6 shore D, 354 ± 52, 22.5 ± 1.3, 21.8 ± 1.1, and 2995 ± 327 MPa as addiction of 2 % TiO2 ; 52.0 ± 0.9 shore D, 347 ± 66, 18.0 ± 0.7, 14.2 ± 0.9, and 1396 ± 477 MPa as 4 % TiO2 ; 51.3 ± 1.3 shore D, 316 ± 9, 17.4 ± 0.2, 13.6 ± 0.6, and 1100 ± 144 MPa as 6 % TiO2 added]. The test disks revealed no cytotoxicity effect on human osteoblasts. The new material presents mild radio-opacity which was enough to observe the implant in relation to fat and muscle, but with no visible effect of beam hardening., Conclusion: In view of the performed tests, the polyethylene enriched by titanium dioxide seems to be a proper material to consider manufacturing of craniomaxillofacial implants., Clinical Relevance: Maxilloafacial surgery is still looking for new implantologic materials. The proposed one is a new way to manufacture an implant visible in computed tomography which does not interfere with its shape in radiological examination and makes it possible to observe the surrounding soft tissues.- Published

- Abstract
Currently, studies connected with Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) techniques focus on assessing hemodynamic of blood flow in vessels in different conditions e.g. after stent-graft's placement. The paper propose a novel method of standardization of results obtained from calculations of stent-grafts' "pushing forces" (cumulative WSS--Wall Shear Stress), and describes its usefulness in diagnostic process. AngioCT data from 27 patients were used to reconstruct 3D geometries of stent-grafts which next were used to create respective reference cylinders. We made an assumption that both the side surface and the height of a stent-graft and a reference cylinder were equal. The proposed algorithm in conjunction with a stent-graft "pushing forces" on an implant wall, allowed us to determine which spatial configuration of a stent-graft predispose to the higher risk of its migration. For stent-grafts close to cylindrical shape (shape factor φ close to 1) WSS value was about 267 Pa, while for stent-grafts different from cylindrical shape (φ close to 2) WSS value was about 635 Pa. It was also noticed that deformation in the stent-graft's bifurcation part impaired blood flow hemodynamic. Concluding the proposed algorithm of standardization proved its usefulness in estimating the WSS values that may be useful in diagnostic process. Angular bends or tortuosity in bifurcations of an aortic implant should be considered in further studies of estimation of the risk of implantation failure.

- Abstract
Purpose: To establish normal values of morphologic parameters of extraocular rectus muscles visualized in different gaze positions by means of an accessible method of dynamic-multipositional magnetic resonance imaging (dmMRI)., Methods: Twenty eyes of 10 healthy, orthotropic subjects were examined. A 1.5T scanner (Avanto) with standard head coil was used. The protocol of dmMRI included 6 gaze positions in 10° intervals in which 13-second, orbital, T2 sequences were performed in quasi-coronal plane. The measurements of extraocular rectus muscles shape, sectional area, and volume were obtained with use of ImageJ 1.38x (NIH) software., Results: Relative change in cross-sectional area between position of rest and gaze of action of each muscle appears to be significant just in the medial and posterior parts of their belly. The maximal cross-section area increases significantly when the muscle contracts (21% to 32% depending on the muscle). The superior rectus must be assessed along with levator palpebrae as the distinction between their bellies is difficult. Relative change in partial muscle volume on contraction ranged from 12.3% to 21.6% depending on the muscle. Muscle contraction results in more circular shape of its belly while relaxation is more of an ellipse., Conclusions: Dynamic-multipositional MRI performed in the proposed manner is an accessible and repeatable method for visualization of extraocular rectus muscles. Assessment of morphometric parameters such as muscle shape, maximal cross-section area, and partial muscle volume is easy with digital imaging software.

- Abstract
The aim of this study is to compare magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with computed tomography (CT) for visualization of an orbital alloplastic prosthesis made of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) both in vitro and in vivo. A study of 15 test implants from UHMW-PE visualized in vitro in CT and MRI and an in vivo visualization in a patient who suffered from orbital injury and underwent reconstructive surgery is presented. The postsurgery MRI showed the UHMW-PE material clearly, with no significant artifacts. The surrounding tissues could be satisfactorily evaluated. The CT scans did not present the graft material. Both techniques were sufficient tools for in vitro evaluation of the shape and measurement of the prosthesis.

- Abstract
Here we present a 3D kinetic model of thrombus formation in an endovascular prosthesis after implantation in an abdominal aorta with an aneurysm. The computational fluid dynamic technique (CFD) was used to determine the process of thrombus formation and growth in the stent-graft on the basis of the medical data from computed tomography angiography and Doppler ultrasound examination of 10 patients. The Quemada model was used to describe rheological properties of blood. Results of the CFD simulations were validated based on actual data from patients with diagnosed thrombi in aortic implants. The results show that the elaborated CFD model correctly predicted thrombus formation, shape and deposition site in an endovascular prosthesis. The developed CFD model of thrombus growth can be applied to predict the risk of thrombus formation in stent-grafts and assist in selection of geometry of the endovascular prosthesis to reduce possible complications after stent-graft implantation using only basic medical data., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
Thickening and increase of area of cartilage have been proposed as two alternative mechanisms of cartilage functional adaptation. The latter has been reported in endurance sportsmen. In weightlifters, extreme strain applied to the articular surfaces can result in other forms of adaptation. The aim of this research is to determine whether cartilage thickness is greater in elite weightlifters than in physically inactive men. Weightlifters (13) and 20 controls [age and body mass index (BMI) matched] underwent knee Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A single sagittal slice of the knee was taken and cartilage thickness was measured in five and six regions of the medial and lateral femoral condyles, respectively. The analyzed segments represented weight-bearing and nonweight-bearing regions. The tibia cartilage in the weight-bearing area was also measured. The time of training onset and its duration in the weightlifter group were recorded. The cartilage was found to be significantly thicker in weightlifters in most of the analyzed regions. The distribution of cartilage thickness on the medial and lateral femoral condyles was similar in both groups. The duration of training was not associated with cartilage thickness, but the time of training onset correlated inversely with cartilage thickness. It is possible that in high-strain sports, joint cartilage can undergo functional adaptation by thickening. Thus, mechanical loading history could exert a postnatal influence on cartilage morphology., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

- Abstract
Coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) is generally defined as coronary dilatation that exceeds the diameter of normal adjacent segments or the diameter of the patient's largest coronary vessel by 1.5 times. The prime cause of CAAs is atherosclerosis, and the most commonly affected artery is the right coronary artery. CAAs are quite commonly detected during X-ray coronary angiography. However, Coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) is generally defined as coronary dilatation that exceeds the diameter of normal adjacent segments or the diameter of the patient's largest coronary vessel by 1.5 times. The prime cause of CAAs is atherosclerosis, and the most commonly affected artery is the right coronary artery. CAAs are quite commonly detected during X-ray coronary angiography. However, giant CAAs, especially with the diameter exceeding 100 mm, are extremely rare. The treatment method of choice of giant CAAs is the excision of aneurysm with coronary artery bypass grafting. We present a case of a 41-year-old apparently healthy woman with a giant right CAA. This was detected by noninvasive methods, including magnetic resonance coronary angiography, and its maximum diameter exceeded 100 mm. In emergency, the aneurysmal sac was excised and the aortocoronary saphenous vein graft was performed. We also present a review of the published studies of giant CAAs with the diameter exceeding 100 mm.

- Abstract
The Cerebral Circle Region, also known as the Circle of Willis (CoW), is a loop of arteries that form arterial connections between supply arteries to distribute blood throughout the cerebral mass. Among the population, only 25% to 50% have a complete system of arteries forming the CoW. 3D time-varying simulations for three different patient-specific artery anatomies of CoW were performed in order to gain a better insight into the phenomena existing in the cerebral blood flow. The models reconstructed on the basis of computer tomography images start from the aorta and include the largest arteries that supply the CoW and the arteries of CoW. Velocity values measured during the ultrasound examination have been compared with the results of simulations. It is shown that the flow in the right anterior artery in some cases may be supplied from the left internal carotid artery via the anterior communicating artery. The investigations conducted show that the computational fluid dynamic tool, which provides high resolution in both time and space domains, can be used to support physicians in diagnosing patients of different ages and various anatomical arterial structures., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
Introduction: The authors have been using patient-specific implants since 2006 and are constantly looking for new reconstructive materials, in order to create precise implants for orbital reconstruction. Such materials should be biocompatible and stable in the human body, as well as easy to machine and form into complex 3D shapes. Biocompatible ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) has several unique properties including high impact strength and a low friction coefficient that result in self-lubricating and thus non-sticking surfaces after processing., Aim: To present the concept of a patient-specific, UHMW-PE orbital wall implant., Materials and Methods: The material used to manufacture the orbital implant was UHMW-PE converted into a solid block of medical polymer from a powder material. A delayed treatment unilateral orbital fracture case was chosen for reconstruction with patient-specific orbital wall implant. On the basis of computerized tomography, a virtual model of both orbits was prepared. The injured orbit was significantly enlarged due to dislocation of its walls. The 3D model of the facial skeleton was symmetrically divided into two parts. This resulted in two models - left and right orbit, then the uninjured orbit was superimposed onto the contralateral side. As a result two surfaces were created; the outer surface (taken from the injured orbit) was used to design the outer surface of the implant, and the inner (taken from the uninjured orbit) for the inner surface. By combining both these surfaces it was possible to determine the unique shape and thickness of the UHMW-PE implant that would allow for accurate reconstruction of the orbit. Following this, the CAD model was transferred to CAM software and a numerical code for a 5-axis milling machine was generated. The manufactured implant was sterilized in gas plasma and used to reconstruct three orbital walls., Results: The thickness of the manufactured implant ranged from 0.2 mm to 1.5 mm and was successfully inserted via transconjunctival approach. The lower, medial and lateral walls were reconstructed. The correct position of the right eyeball was re-established by moving it upward and medially, which resulted in enophthalmos and diplopia correction. The described method features several advantages: accurate reconstruction of the original shape of the orbit, precise modification of local implant thickness during design of the CAD model, structural globe support combined with a thin implant, the possibility of repairing large orbital floor defects, corrections using scissor/scalpel during surgery are relatively uncomplicated, low level of morbidity, smooth edges and gradual, controlled variations in implant thickness between different regions. Disadvantages: changes to the curvature of the implant cannot be made during surgery, implant may require fixing with screws to be stabilized during the early phase of healing, long time required to design and manufacture implants (pre-op) and also UHMW-PE implants are radiolucent and cannot be imaged using X-rays., Conclusion: UHMW-PE appears to have numerous advantages as a material for precise reconstruction of the orbits. Such patient-specific implants are durable, can even be used to reconstruct very thin walls, do not exhibit the high degree of morbidity typical for autogenous bone grafts and result in restoration of vision function., (Copyright © 2012 European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery. - Abstract
Background: Vascular anomalies are usually diagnosed through their clinical picture and history. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of MR imaging in initial assessment of cervicofacial vascular anomalies in children., Material/methods: Twenty pediatric patients with vascular anomalies located in the cervicofacial region underwent MRI examination in our department. Images were evaluated for lesion detectability and its signal characteristics (on T1w, T2w images with fat suppression and contrast enhanced T1w sequences); the extent of the lesions and surrounding tissue involvement were also assessed., Results: In the studied group MR images revealed all anomalies and provided information of their anatomic extent and invasion of surrounding anatomic structures. Nine hemangiomas and six venous malformations were found among studied patients. Two children had multiloculated lesions corresponding to lymphatic malformations. One examination visualized a lesion consisting mainly of dilated vascular channels with an apparent feeding artery, which was consistent with arteriovenous malformation. Two remaining lesions were mixed malformations. Nine patients had lesions limited to subcutaneous tissue. Two masses infiltrated bone structures. There was muscle involvement found in nine cases., Conclusions: MR imaging is a well-established method for detection and monitoring of vascular anomalies in children. With ultrasound used mostly for initial diagnosis and additional flow assessment, angiography viewed as an invasive therapeutic method and computed tomography used only in specific situations due to its high irradiation dose, magnetic resonance is the best imaging method used in differential diagnosis and topographical characterization of vascular malformations and tumors of cervicofacial area in pediatric patients. Noninvasively and without irradiation, it enables evaluation of the extent and characteristics of lesions and planning proper therapeutic strategy.
