We report the synthesis of four homoleptic thorium(iv) amidate complexes as single-source molecular precursors for thorium dioxide. Each can be sublimed at atmospheric pressure, with the substituents on the amidate ligands significantly impacting their volatility and thermal stability. These complexes decompose via alkene elimination to give ThO2 without need for a secondary oxygen source. ThO2 samples formed from pyrolysis of C-alkyl amidates were found to have higher purity and crystallinity than ThO2 samples formed from C-aryl amidates.

5f covalency in [U(C7H7)2]− was probed with carbon K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electronic structure theory. The results are compared with earlier studies which show that the extent of δ-orbital mixing in [U(C7H7)2]1− is larger than reported previously for U(C8H8)2.

C-term magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy is a powerful method for probing d–d and f–f transitions in paramagnetic metal complexes. However, this technique remains underdeveloped both experimentally and theoretically for studies of U(V) complexes of Oh symmetry, which have been of longstanding interest for probing electronic structure, bonding, and covalency in 5f systems. In this study, C-term NIR MCD of the Laporte forbidden f–f transitions of [UCl6]− and [UF6]− are reported, demonstrating the significant fine structure resolution possible with this technique including for the low energy Γ7 → Γ8 transitions in [UF6]−. The experimental NIR MCD studies were further extended to [U(OC6F5)6]−, [U(CH2SiMe3)6]−, and [U(NC(tBu)(Ph))6]− to evaluate the effects of ligand-type on the f–f MCD fine structure features. Theoretical calculations were conducted to determine the Laporte forbidden f–f transitions and their MCD intensity experimentally observed in the NIR spectra of the U(V) hexahalide complexes, via the inclusion of vibronic coupling, to better understand the underlying spectral fine structure features for these complexes. These spectra and simulations provide an important platform for the application of MCD spectroscopy to this widely studied class of U(V) complexes and identify areas for continued theoretical development.

Monodentate organophosphorus ligands have been used for the extraction of the uranyl ion (UO22+) for over half a century and have exhibited exceptional extractability and selectivity toward the uranyl ion due to the presence of the phosphoryl group (O═P). Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is the extractant of the world-renowned PUREX process, which selectively recovers uranium from spent nuclear fuel. Trialkyl phosphine oxide (TRPO) shows extractability toward the uranyl ion that far exceeds that for other metal ions, and it has been used in the TRPO process. To date, however, the mechanism of the high affinity of the phosphoryl group for UO22+ remains elusive. We herein investigate the bonding covalency in a series of complexes of UO22+ with TRPO by oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Four TRPO ligands with different R substituents are examined in this work, for which both the ligands and their uranyl complexes are crystallized and investigated. The study of the electronic structure of the TRPO ligands reveals that the two TRPO molecules, irrespective of their substituents, can engage in σ- and π-type interactions with U 5f and 6d orbitals in the UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes. Although both the axial (Oyl) and equatorial (Oeq) oxygen atoms in the UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes contribute to the X-ray absorption, the first pre-edge feature in the O K-edge XAS with a small intensity is exclusively contributed by Oeq and is assigned to the transition from Oeq 1s orbitals to the unoccupied molecular orbitals of 1b1u + 1b2u + 1b3u symmetries resulting from the σ- and π-type mixing between U 5f and Oeq 2p orbitals. The small intensity in the experimental spectra is consistent with the small amount of Oeq 2p character in these orbitals for the four UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes as obtained by Mulliken population analysis. The DFT calculations demonstrate that the U 6d orbitals are also involved in the U-TRPO bonding interactions in the UO2Cl2(TRPO)2 complexes. The covalent bonding interactions between TRPO and UO22+, especially the contributions from U 5f orbitals, while appearing to be small, are sufficiently responsible for the exceptional extractability and selectivity of monodentate organophosphorus ligands for the uranyl ion. Our results provide valuable insight into the fundamental actinide chemistry and are expected to directly guide actinide separation schemes needed for the development of advanced nuclear fuel cycle technologies.

5f covalency in [U(C

We report the structural properties of ultra-small ThO2 and UO2 nanoparticles (NPs), which were synthesized without strong binding surface ligands by employing a covalent organic framework (COF-5) as an inert template. The resultant NPs were used to observe how structural properties are affected by decreasing grain size within bulk actinide oxides, which has implications for understanding the behavior of nuclear fuel materials. Through a comprehensive characterization strategy, we gain insight regarding how structure at the NP surface differs from the interior. Characterization using electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that growth of the ThO2 and UO2 NPs was confined by the pores of the COF template, resulting in sub-3 nm particles. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy results indicate that the NPs are best described as ThO2 and UO2 materials with unpassivated surfaces. The surface layers of these particles compensate for high surface energy by exhibiting a broader distribution of Th–O and U–O bond distances despite retaining average bond lengths that are characteristic of bulk ThO2 and UO2. The combined synthesis and physical characterization efforts provide a detailed picture of actinide oxide structure at the nanoscale, which remains highly underexplored compared to transition metal counterparts., ThO2 and UO2 nanoparticles synthesized using a COF-5 template exhibit unpassivated surfaces and provide insight into nanoscale properties of actinides.

Homoleptic uranium(IV) amidate complexes have been synthesized and applied as single-source molecular precursors for the chemical vapor deposition of UO2 thin films. These precursors decompose by alkene elimination to give highly crystalline phase-pure UO2 films with an unusual branched heterostructure.

Uranium nitride complexes are attractive targets for chemists as molecular models for the bonding, reactivity, and magnetic properties of next-generation nuclear fuels, but these molecules are uncommon and can be difficult to isolate due to their high reactivity. Here, we describe the synthesis of three new multinuclear uranium nitride complexes, [U(BCMA)2]2(μ-N)(μ-κ1:κ1-BCMA) (7), [(U(BIMA)2)2(μ-N)(μ-NiPr)(K2(μ-η3:η3-CH2CHNiPr)]2 (8), and [U(BIMA)2]2(μ-N)(μ-κ1:κ1-BIMA) (9) (BCMA = N,N-bis(cyclohexyl)methylamidinate, BIMA = N,N-bis(iso-propyl)methylamidinate), from U(III) and U(IV) amidinate precursors. By varying the amidinate ligand substituents and azide source, we were able to influence the composition and size of these nitride complexes. 15N isotopic labeling experiments confirmed the bridging nitride moieties in 7-9 were formed via two-electron reduction of azide. The tetra-uranium cluster 8 was isolated in 99% yield via reductive cleavage of the amidinate ligands; this unusual molecule contains nitrogen-based ligands with formal 1-, 2-, and 3- charges. Additionally, chemical oxidation of the U(IV) precursor U(N3)(BCMA)3 yielded the cationic U(V) species [U(N3)(BCMA)3][OTf]. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed a U(IV) oxidation state for the uranium centers in the three nitride-bridged complexes and provided a comparison of magnetic behavior in the structurally related U(III)-U(IV)-U(V) series U(BCMA)3, U(N3)(BCMA)3, and [U(N3)(BCMA)3][OTf]. At 240 K, the magnetic moments in this series decreased with increasing oxidation state, i.e., U(III) > U(IV) > U(V); this trend follows the decreasing number of 5f valence electrons along this series.

International audience; Two-electron reduction of the amidate-supported U(III) mono(arene) complex U(TDA)(3) (2) with KC8 yields the anionic bis(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)(2)] (3) (TDA = N-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)pivalamido). EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and calculations using DFT as well as multireference CASSCF methods all provide strong evidence that the electronic structure of 3 is best represented as a 5f(4) U(II) metal center bound to a monoreduced arene ligand. Reactivity studies show 3 reacts as a U(I) synthon by behaving as a two-electron reductant toward I-2 to form the dinuclear U(III)-U(III) triiodide species [K[2.2.2]cryptand][(UI(TDA)(2))(2)(mu-I)] (6) and as a three-electron reductant toward cycloheptatriene (CHT) to form the U(IV) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(eta(7)-C7H7)(TDA)(2)(THF)] (7). The reaction of 3 with cyclooctatetraene (COT) generates a mixture of the U(III) anion [K[2.2.2]cryptand][U(TDA)(4)] (1-crypt) and U(COT)(2), while the addition of COT to complex 2 instead yields the dinuclear U(IV)-U(IV) inverse sandwich complex [U(TDA)(3)](2)(mu-eta(8):eta(3)-C8H8) (8). Two-electron reduction of the homoleptic Th(IV) amidate complex Th(TDA)(4) (4) with KC8 gives the mono(arene) complex [K[2.2.2]cryptand][Th(TDA)(3)(THF)] (5). The C-C bond lengths and torsion angles in the bound arene of 5 suggest a direduced arene bound to a Th(IV) metal center; this conclusion is supported by DFT calculations.

Si K-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) have been measured experimentally and calculated using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to investigate electronic structure in aryl silanes, PhnSiH4-n (n = 0-4). Adding aryl groups to SiH4 splits the Si-H σ-antibonding orbitals into new orbitals with Si-Ph π-bonding (πb) and π-antibonding (π*) character. Greater aryl substitution is reflected by increasingly intense Si 1s → πb and Si 1s → π* transitions, and weaker transitions into the Si-H and Si-C σ* orbitals. These observations are consistent with known trends in the hydride donor ability of aryl silanes, which is driven in part by the composition of the LUMOs and the accessibility of pathways for electron delocalization through aromatic conjugation. Methodology developed for liquid-phase Si K-edge XAS measurements on PhSiH3 and Ph2SiH2 will enable dynamic studies of chemical transformations involving silicon-containing catalysts, intermediates, and substrates.

Previous magnetic, spectroscopic, and theoretical studies of cerocene, Ce(C8H8)2, have provided evidence for non-negligible 4f-electron density on Ce and implied that charge transfer from the ligands occurs as a result of covalent bonding. Strong correlations of the localized 4f-electrons to the delocalized ligand π-system result in emergence of Kondo-like behavior and other quantum chemical phenomena that are rarely observed in molecular systems. In this study, Ce(C8H8)2 is analyzed experimentally using carbon K-edge and cerium M5,4-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies (XAS), and computationally using configuration interaction (CI) calculations and density functional theory (DFT) as well as time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). Both spectroscopic approaches provide strong evidence for ligand → metal electron transfer as a result of Ce 4f and 5d mixing with the occupied C 2p orbitals of the C8H82− ligands. Specifically, the Ce M5,4-edge XAS and CI calculations show that the contribution of the 4f1, or Ce3+, configuration to the ground state of Ce(C8H8)2 is similar to strongly correlated materials such as CeRh3 and significantly larger than observed for other formally Ce4+ compounds including CeO2 and CeCl62−. Pre-edge features in the experimental and TDDFT-simulated C K-edge XAS provide unequivocal evidence for C 2p and Ce 4f covalent orbital mixing in the δ-antibonding orbitals of e2u symmetry, which are the unoccupied counterparts to the occupied, ligand-based δ-bonding e2u orbitals. The C K-edge peak intensities, which can be compared directly to the C 2p and Ce 4f orbital mixing coefficients determined by DFT, show that covalency in Ce(C8H8)2 is comparable in magnitude to values reported previously for U(C8H8)2. An intuitive model is presented to show how similar covalent contributions to the ground state can have different impacts on the overall stability of f-element metallocenes., Unequivocal experimental evidence for carbon 2p and cerium 4f orbital mixing in cerocene, Ce(C8H8)2 is provided from carbon K-edge and Ce M5,4-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies and corroborated with DFT and configuration interaction calculations.

We describe the syntheses of [Th(iii)]–[Al] and [U(iii)]–[Al] bimetallics that demonstrate An→Al interactions where the actinide behaves as an electron donor., Thorium sits at a unique position on the periodic table. On one hand, there is little evidence that its 5f orbitals engage in bonding as they do in other early actinides; on the other hand, its chemistry is distinct from Lewis acidic transition metals. To gain insight into the underlying electronic structure of Th and develop trends across the actinide series, it is useful to study Th(iii) and Th(ii) systems with valence electrons that may engage in non-electrostatic metal–ligand interactions, although only a handful of such systems are known. To expand the range of low-valent compounds and gain deeper insight into Th electronic structure, we targeted actinide bimetallic complexes containing metal–metal bonds. Herein, we report the syntheses of Th–Al bimetallics from reactions between a di-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl supported Th(iv) dihalide (Cp‡2ThCl2) and an anionic aluminum hydride salt [K(H3AlC(SiMe3)3) (1)]. Reduction of the [Th(iv)](Cl)–[Al] product resulted in a [Th(iii)]–[Al] complex [Cp‡2Th(μ-H3)AlC(SiMe3)3 (4)]. The U(iii) analogue [Cp‡2U(μ-H3)AlC(SiMe3)3 (5)] could be synthesized directly from a U(iii) halide starting material. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies on 4 demonstrate hyperfine interactions between the unpaired electron and the Al atom indicative of spin density delocalization from the Th metal center to the Al. Density functional theory and atom in molecules calculations confirmed the presence of An→Al interactions in 4 and 5, which represents the first examples of An→M interactions where the actinide behaves as an electron donor.

Understanding the nature of covalent (band-like) vs ionic (atomic-like) electrons in metal oxides continues to be at the forefront of research in the physical sciences. In particular, the development of a coherent and quantitative model of bonding and electronic structure for the lanthanide dioxides, LnO2(Ln = Ce, Pr, and Tb), has remained a considerable challenge for both experiment and theory. Herein, relative changes in mixing between the O 2p orbitals and the Ln 4f and 5d orbitals in LnO2are evaluated quantitatively using O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) obtained with a scanning transmission X-ray microscope and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For each LnO2, the results reveal significant amounts of Ln 5d and O 2p mixing in the orbitals of t2g(σ-bonding) and eg(π-bonding) symmetry. The remarkable agreement between experiment and theory also shows that significant mixing with the O 2p orbitals occurs in a band derived from the 4f orbitals of a2usymmetry (σ-bonding) for each compound. However, a large increase in orbital mixing is observed for PrO2that is ascribed to a unique interaction derived from the 4f orbitals of t1usymmetry (σ- and π-bonding). O K-edge XAS and DFT results are compared with complementary L3-edge and M5,4-edge XAS measurements and configuration interaction calculations, which shows that each spectroscopic approach provides evidence for ground state O 2p and Ln 4f orbital mixing despite inducing very different core-hole potentials in the final state.

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd A combined analytical method of NEXAFS measurement and DFT-calculation was employed for the evaluation of Cs states in clay minerals. The measured Cs M 4,5 NEXAFS spectra of Cs halides were analyzed using the DFT-calculations in order to establish the analytical methods. The NEXAFS spectra of the Cs halides were well reproduced by incorporating the core-hole strength. The Cs M 4,5 NEXAFS spectrum of the clay minerals was well reproduced by the DFT-calculations including the major transitions and tail structures with the established method. Further evaluation of this spectrum by charge density analysis suggested that these major transitions and the tail structures likely reflect the bonding state and the local environment around the Cs atoms. Comparison of electronic states of Cs in the clay mineral with those in the Cs halides by DFT-calculations has shown that the interaction between Cs and the nearest-neighbor atom is largest in the clay mineral, which differs from those of Cs halides. This happened due to the energy level of Cs-5s and 5p, which was closer to that of O-2s and 2p than the s and p orbitals of other alkali metal and alkali earth metal elements.

Evaluating the nature of chemical bonding for actinide elements represents one of the most important and long-standing problems in actinide science. We directly address this challenge and contribute a Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and relativistic density functional theory study that quantitatively evaluates An-Cl covalency in AnCl62- (AnIV = Th, U, Np, Pu). The results showed significant mixing between Cl 3p- and AnIV 5f- and 6d-orbitals (t1u*/t2u* and t2 g*/eg *), with the 6d-orbitals showing more pronounced covalent bonding than the 5f-orbitals. Moving from Th to U, Np, and Pu markedly changed the amount of M-Cl orbital mixing, such that AnIV 6d - and Cl 3p-mixing decreased and metal 5f - and Cl 3p-orbital mixing increased across this series.

A tetravalent cerium macrocyclic complex (CeLK4) was prepared with an octadentate terephthalamide ligand comprised of hard catecholate donors and characterized in the solution state by spectrophotometric titrations and electrochemistry and in the crystal by X-ray diffraction. The solution-state studies showed that L exhibits a remarkably high affinity toward Ce4+, with log β110 = 61(2) and ΔG = −348 kJ/mol, compared with log β110 = 32.02(2) for the analogous Pr3+ complex. In addition, L exhibits an unusual preference for forming CeL4– relative to formation of the analogous actinide complex, ThL4–, which has β110 = 53.7(5). The extreme stabilization of tetravalent cerium relative to its trivalent state is also evidenced by the shift of 1.91 V in the redox potential of the Ce3+/Ce4+ couple of the complex (measured at −0.454 V vs SHE). The electronic structure in the complete series of stable lanthanide sesquioxides, Ln2O3 (Ln = La to Lu, except radioactive Pm), has been evaluated using oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with a scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM). The experimental results agree with recent synthetic, spectroscopic and theoretical investigations that provided evidence for 5d orbital involvement in lanthanide bonding, while confirming the traditional viewpoint that there is little Ln 4f and O 2p orbital mixing. However, the results also showed that changes in the energy and occupancy of the 4f orbitals can impact Ln 5d and O 2p mixing, leading to several different bonding modes for seemingly identical Ln2O3 structures. On moving from left to right in the periodic table, abrupt changes were observed for the energy and intensity of transitions associated with Ln 5d and O 2p antibonding states. These changes in peak intensity, which were directly related to the amounts of O 2p and Ln 5d mixing, were closely correlated to the well-established trends in the chemical accessibility of the 4f orbitals towards oxidation or reduction. The unique insight provided by the O K-edge XAS is discussed in the context of several recent theoretical and physical studies on trivalent lanthanide compounds.

This behavior results from the simultaneous contraction of the unit cell volume, which tunes the relative strengths of the Kondo and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions, and the introduction of disorder through alloying. Near the critical region at xcr≈ 0.7, the rate of contraction of the unit cell volume strengthens, indicating that the cerium f valence crosses over from trivalent to a noninteger value. Consistent with this picture, x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal that while CePd2P2 has a purely trivalent cerium f state, CeNi2P2 has a small (l10 %) tetravalent contribution. In a broad region around xcr, there is a breakdown of Fermi-liquid temperature dependences, signaling the influence of quantum critical fluctuations and disorder effects. Measurements of clean CePd2P2 furthermore show that applied pressure has an initial effect similar to alloying on the ferromagnetic order. From these results, CePd2P2 emerges as a keystone system to test theories such as the Belitz-Kirkpatrick-Vojta model for ferromagnetic quantum criticality, where distinct behaviors are expected in the dirty and clean limits.

The solid solution $\mathrm{Eu}{({\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Al}}_{x})}_{4}$ was grown in single crystal form to reveal a rich variety of crystallographic, magnetic, and electronic properties that differ from the isostructural end compounds ${\mathrm{EuGa}}_{4}$ and ${\mathrm{EuAl}}_{4}$, despite the similar covalent radii and electronic configurations of Ga and Al. Here we report the onset of magnetic spin reorientation and metamagnetic transitions for $x=0--1$ evidenced by magnetization and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$ changes nonmonotonously with $x$, and it reaches a maximum around 20 K for $x=0.50$, where the $a$ lattice parameter also shows an extreme (minimum) value. Anomalies in the temperature-dependent resistivity consistent with charge density wave behavior exist only for $x=0.50$ and 1. Density functional theory calculations show increased polarization between the Ga-Al covalent bonds in the $x=0.50$ structure compared to the end compounds, such that crystallographic order and chemical pressure are proposed as the causes of the charge density wave behavior.

Synchrotron radiation spectromicroscopy provides a combination of submicron spatial resolution and chemical sensitivity that is well-suited to analysis of heterogeneous nuclear materials. The chemical and physical characteristics determined by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) are complementary to information obtained from standard radiochemical analysis methods. In addition, microscopic quantities of radioactive material can be characterized rapidly by STXM with minimal sample handling and intrusion, especially in the case of particulate materials. The STXM can accommodate a diverse range of samples including wet materials, complex mixtures, and small quantities of material contained in a larger matrix. In these cases, the inventory of species present in a sample is likely to carry information on its process history; STXM has the demonstrated capability to identify contaminants and sample matrices. Operating in the soft X-ray regime provides particular sensitivity to the chemical state of specimens containing low-Z materials, via the K-edges of light elements. Here, recent developments in forensics-themed spectromicroscopy, sample preparation, and data acquisition methods at the Molecular Environmental Science Beamline 11.0.2 of the Advanced Light Source are described. Results from several initial studies are presented, demonstrating the capability to identify the distribution of the species present in heterogeneous uranium-bearing materials. Future opportunities for STXM forensic studies and potential methodology development are discussed.

Correlated electron phenomena in lanthanide and actinide materials are driven by a complex interplay between the $f$ and $d$ orbitals. In this study, aluminum $K$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations are used to evaluate the electronic structure of the dialuminides, $M{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}$ ($M$ = Ce, Sm, Eu, Yb, Lu, U, and Pu). The results show how the energy and occupancy of the $4f$ or $5f$ orbitals impacts mixing of Al $3p$ character into the $5d$ or $6d$ conduction bands, which has implications for understanding the magnetic and structural properties of correlated electron systems.

Understanding the nature of covalent (band-like) vs ionic (atomic-like) electrons in metal oxides continues to be at the forefront of research in the physical sciences. In particular, the development of a coherent and quantitative model of bonding and electronic structure for the lanthanide dioxides, LnO

Polarized aluminum K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and first-principles calculations were used to probe electronic structure in a series of (BDI)Al, (BDI)AlX2, and (BDI)AlR2 coordination compounds (X = F, Cl, I; R = H, Me; BDI = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl-β-diketiminate). Spectral interpretations were guided by examination of the calculated transition energies and polarization-dependent oscillator strengths, which agreed well with the XANES spectroscopy measurements. Pre-edge features were assigned to transitions associated with the Al 3p orbitals involved in metal-ligand bonding. Qualitative trends in Al 1s core energy and valence orbital occupation were established through a systematic comparison of excited states derived from Al 3p orbitals with similar symmetries in a molecular orbital framework. These trends suggested that the higher transition energies observed for (BDI)AlX2 systems with more electronegative X(1-) ligands could be ascribed to a decrease in electron density around the aluminum atom, which causes an increase in the attractive potential of the Al nucleus and concomitant increase in the binding energy of the Al 1s core orbitals. For (BDI)Al and (BDI)AlH2 the experimental Al K-edge XANES spectra and spectra calculated using the eXcited electron and Core-Hole (XCH) approach had nearly identical energies for transitions to final state orbitals of similar composition and symmetry. These results implied that the charge distributions about the aluminum atoms in (BDI)Al and (BDI)AlH2 are similar relative to the (BDI)AlX2 and (BDI)AlMe2 compounds, despite having different formal oxidation states of +1 and +3, respectively. However, (BDI)Al was unique in that it exhibited a low-energy feature that was attributed to transitions into a low-lying p-orbital of b1 symmetry that is localized on Al and orthogonal to the (BDI)Al plane. The presence of this low-energy unoccupied molecular orbital on electron-rich (BDI)Al distinguishes its valence electronic structure from that of the formally trivalent compounds (BDI)AlX2 and (BDI)AlR2. The work shows that Al K-edge XANES spectroscopy can be used to provide valuable insight into electronic structure and reactivity relationships for main-group coordination compounds.

Covalency in Ln-Cl bonds of Oh-LnCl6(x-) (x = 3 for Ln = Ce(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), Gd(III); x = 2 for Ln = Ce(IV)) anions has been investigated, primarily using Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT); however, Ce L3,2-edge and M5,4-edge XAS were also used to characterize CeCl6(x-) (x = 2, 3). The M5,4-edge XAS spectra were modeled using configuration interaction calculations. The results were evaluated as a function of (1) the lanthanide (Ln) metal identity, which was varied across the series from Ce to Gd, and (2) the Ln oxidation state (when practical, i.e., formally Ce(III) and Ce(IV)). Pronounced mixing between the Cl 3p- and Ln 5d-orbitals (t2g* and eg*) was observed. Experimental results indicated that Ln 5d-orbital mixing decreased when moving across the lanthanide series. In contrast, oxidizing Ce(III) to Ce(IV) had little effect on Cl 3p and Ce 5d-orbital mixing. For LnCl6(3-) (formally Ln(III)), the 4f-orbitals participated only marginally in covalent bonding, which was consistent with historical descriptions. Surprisingly, there was a marked increase in Cl 3p- and Ce(IV) 4f-orbital mixing (t1u* + t2u*) in CeCl6(2-). This unexpected 4f- and 5d-orbital participation in covalent bonding is presented in the context of recent studies on both tetravalent transition metal and actinide hexahalides, MCl6(2-) (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, U).

Reaction of the neutral diniobium benzene complex {[Nb(BDI)N t Bu]2(μ-C6H6)} (BDI = N,N'-diisopropylbenzene-β-diketiminate) with Ag[B(C6F5)4] results in a single electron oxidation to produce a cationic diniobium arene complex, {[Nb(BDI)N t Bu]2(μ-C6H6)}{B(C6F5)4}. Investigation of the solid state and solution phase structure using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, magnetic susceptibility, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy indicates that the oxidation results in an asymmetric molecule with two chemically inequivalent Nb atoms. Further characterization using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, UV-visible, Nb L3,2-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and EPR spectroscopies supports assignment of a diniobium complex, in which one Nb atom carries a single unpaired electron that is not largely delocalized on the second Nb atom. During the oxidative transformation, one electron is removed from the δ-bonding HOMO, which causes a destabilization of the molecule and formation of an asymmetric product. Subsequent reactivity studies indicate that the oxidized product allows access to metal-based chemistry with substrates that did not exhibit reactivity with the starting neutral complex.

Oxygen and aluminum K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), imaging from a scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM), and first-principles calculations were used to probe the composition and morphology of bulk aluminum metal, α- and γ-Al2O3, and several types of aluminum nanoparticles. The imaging results agreed with earlier transmission electron microscopy studies that showed a 2 to 5 nm thick layer of Al2O3on all the Al surfaces. Spectral interpretations were guided by examination of the calculated transition energies, which agreed well with the spectroscopic measurements. Features observed in the experimental O and Al K-edge XAS were used to determine the chemical structure and phase of the Al2O3on the aluminum surfaces. For unprotected 18 and 100 nm Al nanoparticles, this analysis revealed an oxide layer that was similar to γ-Al2O3and comprised of both tetrahedral and octahedral Al coordination sites. For oleic acid-protected Al nanoparticles, only tetrahedral Al oxide coordination sites were observed. The results were correlated to trends in the reactivity of the different materials, which suggests that the structures of different Al2O3layers have an important role in the accessibility of the underlying Al metal toward further oxidation. Combined, the Al K-edge XAS and STXM results provided detailed chemical information that was not obtained from powder X-ray diffraction or imaging from a transmission electron microscope.

© 2017 American Chemical Society. The electron density distribution of [PPh4][UF6] was obtained from high-resolution X-ray diffraction data measured at 20 K. The electron density was modeled with an augmented Hansen-Coppens multipolar formalism. Topological analysis reveals that the U-F bond is of incipient covalent nature. Theoretical calculations add further support to the bonding description gleaned from the experimental model. The impact of the uranium anomalous dispersion terms on the refinement is also discussed.

The solid-state MU8Q17 compounds ScU8S17, CoU8S17, NiU8S17, TiU8Se17, VU8Se17, CrU8Se17, CoU8Se17, and NiU8Se17 were synthesized from the reactions of the elements at 1173 or 1123 K. These isostructural compounds crystallize in space group C2h3 - C2/m of the monoclinic system in the CrU8S17 structure type. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopic studies of ScU8S17 indicate that it contains Sc3+, and hence charge balance is achieved with a composition that includes U3+ as well as U4+. The other compounds charge balance with M2+ and U4+. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on ScU8S17 indicate antiferromagnetic couplings and a highly reduced effective magnetic moment. Ab Initio calculations find the compound to be metallic. Surprisingly, the Sc–S distances are actually longer than all the other M–S interactions, even though the ionic radii of Sc3+, low-spin Cr2+, and Ni2+ are similar.

Understanding the uranium 5f/6d orbital mixing with oxygen 2p valence orbitals in uranium oxides is important for advancing nuclear technology. Unfortunately, U–O orbital mixing is difficult to probe experimentally. In this manuscript, U–O bonding is evaluated in U 3 O 8 using O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). To confirm that the O K-edge XAS spectra were correct and did not contain contributions from surface contamination, three different sample types were investigated using three unique detection methods. Specifically an epitaxial film of U 3 O 8 deposited on Al 2 O 3 (PAD-U 3 O 8 ) was probed using grazing-incidence fluorescence yield (GIFY) detection, a bulk powder of α-phase U 3 O 8 was analyzed with fluorescence yield (FY) detection at normal incidence, and particles of α-phase U 3 O 8 were studied in transmission mode using a scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM). Experimental spectra have been presented in the context of previously published computational results from DFT using the Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof (HSE) screened hybrid functional. Overall, the comparative analyses of PAD-U 3 O 8 and α-phase U 3 O 8 samples enabled identification of unique signatures associated with oxygen 2p orbital mixing with both U V and U VI 5f and 6d valence orbitals.

Evidence for metal–carbon orbital mixing in thorocene and uranocene was determined from DFT calculations and carbon K-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) collected with a scanning transmission X-ray microscope (STXM). Both the experimental and computational results showed that the 5f orbitals engaged in significant δ-type mixing with the C8H82− ligands, which increased as the 5f orbitals dropped in energy on moving from Th4+ to U4+. The first experimental evidence for extensive ϕ-orbital interactions has been provided by the C K-edge XAS analysis of thorocene; however, ϕ-type covalency in uranocene was negligible. The results highlighted two contrasting trends in orbital mixing from one pair of highly symmetric molecules, and showed that covalency does not increase uniformly for different molecular orbital interactions with later actinides.

Syntheses of neutral halide and aryl vanadium bisimides are described. Treatment of VCl2(NtBu)[NTMS(N(t)Bu)], 2, with PMe3, PEt3, PMe2Ph, or pyridine gave vanadium bisimides via TMSCl elimination in good yield: VCl(PMe3)2(N(t)Bu)2 3, VCl(PEt3)2(N(t)Bu)2 4, VCl(PMe2Ph)2(N(t)Bu)2 5, and VCl(Py)2(N(t)Bu)2 6. The halide series (Cl-I) was synthesized by use of TMSBr and TMSI to give VBr(PMe3)2(N(t)Bu)2 7 and VI(PMe3)2(N(t)Bu)2 8. The phenyl derivative was obtained by reaction of 3 with MgPh2 to give VPh(PMe3)2(N(t)Bu)2 9. These neutral complexes are compared to the previously reported cationic bisimides [V(PMe3)3(N(t)Bu)2][Al(PFTB)4] 10, [V(PEt3)2(N(t)Bu)2][Al(PFTB)4] 11, and [V(DMAP)(PEt3)2(N(t)Bu)2][Al(PFTB)4] 12 (DMAP = dimethylaminopyridine, PFTB = perfluoro-tert-butoxide). Characterization of the complexes by X-ray diffraction, (13)C NMR, (51)V NMR, and V L(3,2)-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy provides a description of the electronic structure in comparison to group 6 bisimides and the bent metallocene analogues. The electronic structure is dominated by π bonding to the imides, and localization of electron density at the nitrogen atoms of the imides is dictated by the cone angle and donating ability of the axial neutral supporting ligands. This phenomenon is clearly seen in the sensitivity of (51)V NMR shift, (13)C NMR Δδ(αβ), and L3-edge energy to the nature of the supporting phosphine ligand, which defines the parameters for designing cationic group 5 bisimides that would be capable of breaking stronger σ bonds. Conversely, all three methods show little dependence on the variable equatorial halide ligand. Furthermore, this analysis allows for quantification of the electronic differences between vanadium bisimides and the structurally analogous mixed Cp/imide system CpV(N(t)Bu)X2 (Cp = C5H5(1-)).

Synthetic routes to salts containing uranium bis-imido tetrahalide anions [U(NR)(2)X(4)](2-) (X = Cl(-), Br(-)) and non-coordinating NEt(4)(+) and PPh(4)(+) countercations are reported. In general, these compounds can be prepared from U(NR)(2)I(2)(THF)(x) (x = 2 and R = (t)Bu, Ph; x = 3 and R = Me) upon addition of excess halide. In addition to providing stable coordination complexes with Cl(-), the [U(NMe)(2)](2+) cation also reacts with Br(-) to form stable [NEt(4)](2)[U(NMe)(2)Br(4)] complexes. These materials were used as a platform to compare electronic structure and bonding in [U(NR)(2)](2+) with [UO(2)](2+). Specifically, Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and both ground-state and time-dependent hybrid density functional theory (DFT and TDDFT) were used to probe U-Cl bonding interactions in [PPh(4)](2)[U(N(t)Bu)(2)Cl(4)] and [PPh(4)](2)[UO(2)Cl(4)]. The DFT and XAS results show the total amount of Cl 3p character mixed with the U 5f orbitals was roughly 7-10% per U-Cl bond for both compounds, which shows that moving from oxo to imido has little effect on orbital mixing between the U 5f and equatorial Cl 3p orbitals. The results are presented in the context of recent Cl K-edge XAS and DFT studies on other hexavalent uranium chloride systems with fewer oxo or imido ligands.

In the ocean, complex interactions between natural and anthropogenic radionuclides, seawater, and diverse marine biota provide a unique window through which to examine ecosystem and trophic transfer mechanisms in cases of accidental dissemination. The nature of interaction between radionuclides, the marine environment, and marine species is therefore essential for better understanding transfer mechanisms from the hydrosphere to the biosphere. Although data pertaining to the rate of global transfer are often available, little is known regarding the mechanism of environmental transport and uptake of heavy radionuclides by marine species. Among marine species, sponges are immobile active filter feeders and have been identified as hyperaccumulators of several heavy metals. We have selected the Mediterranean sponge Aplysina cavernicola as a model species for this study. Actinide elements are not the only source of radioactive release in cases of civilian nuclear events; however, their physicochemical transfer mechanisms to marine species remain largely unknown. We have targeted europium(III) as a representative of the trivalent actinides such as americium or curium. To unravel biological uptake mechanisms of europium in A. cavernicola, we have combined radiometric (γ) measurements with spectroscopic (time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, TRLIFS, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure, XANES) and imaging (transmission electron microscopy, TEM, and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, STXM) techniques. A tetravalent cerium macrocyclic complex (CeLK

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) incorporating a high concentration of acid functional groups possess characteristics that are promising for use in separating lanthanide and actinide metal ions, as required in the treatment of radioactive waste. These materials have been shown to be indefinitely stable to concentrated acids and bases, potentially allowing for multiple adsorption/stripping cycles. Additionally, the PAFs combine exceptional features from MOFs and inorganic/activated carbons giving rise to tunable pore surfaces and maximum chemical stability. Herein, we present a study of the adsorption of selected metal ions, Sr2+, Fe3+, Nd3+, and Am3+, from aqueous solutions employing a carbon-based porous aromatic framework, BPP-7 (Berkeley Porous Polymer-7). This material displays high metal loading capacities together with excellent adsorption selectivity for neodymium over strontium based on Langmuir adsorption isotherms and ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) calculations. Based in part upon X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies, the stronger adsorption of neodymium is attributed to multiple metal ion and binding site interactions resulting from the densely functionalized and highly interpenetrated structure of BPP-7. Recyclability and combustibility experiments demonstrate that multiple adsorption/stripping cycles can be completed with minimal degradation of the polymer adsorption capacity., A highly interpenetrated carboxylic acid functionalized porous aromatic framework (PAF) has been demonstrated to undergo selective uptake of neodymium ions over iron and strontium ions, a promising development toward Ln/An group separation in the treatment of fission products.

Reaction of (CpSiMe(3))(3)U or (CpSiMe(3))(3)Nd with (Cp*Al)(4) or Cp*Ga (Cp* = C(5)Me(5)) afforded the isostructural complexes (CpSiMe(3))(3)M-ECp* (M = U, E = Al (1); M = U, E = Ga (2); M = Nd, E = Al (3); M = Nd, E = Ga (4)). In the case of 1 and 2 the complexes were isolated in 39 and 90% yields, respectively, as crystalline solids and were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility, and UV-visible-NIR spectroscopy. In the case of 3 and 4, the complexes were observed by variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy but were not isolated as pure materials. Comparison of the equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters DeltaH and DeltaS obtained by (1)H NMR titration methods revealed a much stronger U-Ga interaction in 2 than the Nd-Ga interaction in 4. Competition reactions between (CpSiMe(3))(3)U and (CpSiMe(3))(3)Nd indicate that Cp*Ga selectively binds U over Nd in a 93:7 ratio at 19 degrees C and 96:4 at -33 degrees C. For 1 and 3, comparison of (1)H NMR peak intensities suggests that Cp*Al also achieves excellent U(III)/Nd(III) selectivity at 21 degrees C. The solution electronic spectra and solid-state temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities of 1 and 2, in addition to X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements from scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) of 1, are consistent with those observed for other U(III) coordination complexes. DFT calculations using five different functionals were performed on the model complexes Cp(3)M-ECp (M = Nd, U; E = Al, Ga), and empirical fitting of the values for Cp(3)M-ECp allowed the prediction of binding energy estimates for Cp*Al compounds 1 and 3. NBO/NLMO bonding analyses on Cp(3)U-ECp indicate that the bonding consists predominantly of a E--U sigma-interaction arising from favorable overlap between the diffuse ligand lone pair and the primarily 7s/6d acceptor orbitals on U(III), with negligible U--E pi-donation. The overall experimental and computational bonding analysis suggests that Cp*Al and Cp*Ga behave as good sigma-donors in these systems.

Single crystals of the title compounds are synthesized by solid state reactions of the elements in an ACl flux (A: Cs, K, Rb) (Ar, silica tubes, 1073—1123 K, 96—168 h).

Two isostructural series of trigonal prismatic complexes, M(Bp(Me))3 and M(Bc(Me))3 (M = Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, U; [Bp(Me)](-) = dihydrobis(methypyrazolyl)borate; [Bc(Me)](-) = dihydrobis(methylimidazolyl)borate) are synthesized and fully characterized to examine the influence of ligand donor strength on slow magnetic relaxation. Investigation of the dynamic magnetic properties reveals that the oblate electron density distributions of the Tb(3+), Dy(3+), and U(3+) metal ions within the axial ligand field lead to slow relaxation upon application of a small dc magnetic field. Significantly, the magnetization relaxation is orders of magnitude slower for the N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, M(Bc(Me))3, than for the isomeric pyrazolate complexes, M(Bp(Me))3. Further, investigation of magnetically dilute samples containing 11-14 mol % of Tb(3+), Dy(3+), or U(3+) within the corresponding Y(3+) complex matrix reveals thermally activated relaxation is favored for the M(Bc(Me))3 complexes, even when dipolar interactions are largely absent. Notably, the dilute species U(Bc(Me))3 exhibits Ueff ≈ 33 cm(-1), representing the highest barrier yet observed for a U(3+) molecule demonstrating slow relaxation. Additional analysis through lanthanide XANES, X-band EPR, and (1)H NMR spectroscopies provides evidence that the origin of the slower relaxation derives from the greater magnetic anisotropy enforced within the strongly donating N-heterocyclic carbene coordination sphere. These results show that, like molecular symmetry, ligand-donating ability is a variable that can be controlled to the advantage of the synthetic chemist in the design of single-molecule magnets with enhanced relaxation barriers.
