Starting out from the interpretation of Picasso’s Guernica in Peter Weiss’s The Aesthetics of Resistance, this essay discusses how, why, and for what purposes Weiss inserted extensive discussions of classical and contemporary artworks in his novel. More specifically, and by introducing the two notions of the foldout and political emergence, the essay investigates how the visual artworks in Weiss’s narrative reconfigure understandings of temporality, collectivity, and realism. A central question concerns the novel’s way of transforming representations of objective oppression, and even death itself, into figures of emancipatory subjective agency. Analyses of the novel’s interpretive engagement with visual artworks such as Guernica demonstrate how these sections of the novelistic text interrupt historical temporality, establish a transhistorical collectivity, and superimpose the experience of the victim with the perspective of the witness. In this way, it is argued, Weiss’s narrative enables an identification with the mute experience of destruction while converting that experience into a future-oriented political force: the emergence and continuation of collective struggle.

Treatment of the slurry is important during RheoMetalTM casting. In this work, semi-solid slurries were prepared under different stirring intensities, using two types of stirrers: a naked rod (for regular stirring) and a rod with two blades (for intensified stir). Tensile tests were performed, investigating fracture surfaces, as well as metallographic samples. The results show that intensified stir produces castings with finer primary particles and a more homogeneous microstructure. On the other hand, more faceted Fe-rich phases are found along the α-Al grains boundary as well, due to the dissolution of Fe from the stirrers. Moreover, for intensified stir castings, the porosity found on the fracture surfaces are smaller, while more brittle eutectic phases and second (intermetallic) phases, especially Fe-rich phases, are observed. Consequently, the castings with intensified stir show worse ductility. Finally, a quantitative analysis was made regarding ductility, affected both by porosity and the presence of Fe-rich phases.

Two alloys containing different Mg contents have been used to study the combined effect of stirring and oxidation on microstructure and ductility. The results show that intensive stirring can sufficiently disperse the α-Al particles and enable better liquid feeding during solidification and consequently reduce the porosity. The morphology of the oxides is determined by the amount of both Mg and stirring. With lower Mg content, the oxides present as oxide films, which can be broken up during stirring. In alloy with higher Mg content, the oxides exist as particles with numerous cracks, and the particle size increases slightly after stirring. In the Magsimal 59 alloy, due to the presence of large clusters of pores in the fracture surface, the influence of the small oxide particles on the ductility is negligible. In contrast, in the 42000 alloy, large oxide films on the fracture surface are correlated with the ductility.

This essay represents an effort to rethink the relationship between political emergence and migrant agency. This undertaking has a theoretical motivation. Mainstream human and social sciences seem to be at an impasse because of their structural inability to interpret and explain systemic crises and contradictions. While this is a topic far too complex to be dealt with in a brief essay, the following pages will explore three expressions of this impasse. First, the social sciences often analyse migration without acknowledging its profound political implications. Second, European history and sociology rarely recognize histories of imperial dominance and anticolonial resistance as intrinsic to European history and society. Third, mainstream social and political theories often ignore the structural significance of collective protests and resistance movements for the realization of democracy. The article frames the analysis of these problems via two different theoretical contexts in which we can observe ongoing conceptual or methodological shifts or ‘turns’ that respond to the said impasse. In studies of democracy and citizenship there has thus been a clear turn toward ‘borders’. In migration studies, there is a corresponding turn toward ‘agency’. By analysing the interconnections between these theoretical contexts the article suggests ways of resolving the three problems at hand. It starts by examining the first one, or the inability to acknowledge the profound political implications of migration. This discussion will then offer an approach to the other two, concerning the legacies of colonialism and the significance of political agency and protest. Résumé Cet essai représente un effort pour repenser la relation entre migration et politique. La motivation d’un tel essai est théorique. Les sciences humaines et sociales classiques semblent se trouver dans une impasse en raison de leur incapacité structurelle à interpréter et à expliquer les crises et les contradictions systémiques. Bien que ce sujet soit beaucoup trop complexe pour être traité dans un bref essai, les pages suivantes explorent trois expressions de cette impasse. Premièrement, les sciences sociales analysent souvent la migration sans reconnaître ses profondes implications politiques. Deuxièmement, l’histoire et la sociologie européennes reconnaissent rarement les histoires de domination impériale et de résistance anticoloniale comme étant intrinsèques à l’histoire et à la société européennes. Troisièmement, les théories sociales et politiques traditionnelles ignorent souvent la portée structurelle des manifestations collectives et des mouvements de résistance pour la réalisation de la démocratie. Je vais articuler mon analyse de ces problèmes selon deux contextes théoriques différents dans lesquels nous pouvons observer des changements conceptuels ou méthodologiques en cours ou des « tournants » qui répondent à cette impasse. Dans les études sur la démocratie et la citoyenneté, on s’est donc clairement tourné vers les « frontières ». Dans les études sur les migrations, on assiste à un virage correspondant à « l’agence ». En analysant les interconnexions entre ces contextes théoriques, j’espère suggérer des moyens de résoudre les trois problèmes actuels. Je commence par examiner le premier, ou l’incapacité de reconnaître les profondes implications politiques de la migration. Cette discussion offrira ensuite une approche aux deux autres, concernant les héritages du colonialisme et la signification de la volonté politique et de la protestation. Resumen Este ensayo presenta un intento de repensar teóricamente la relación entre migración y política. Las corrientes dominantes en ciencias humanas y sociales parecen encontrarse en un callejón sin salida por su incapacidad estructural para interpretar y explicar las crisis sistémicas y sus contradicciones. Aunque se trata de un tema demasiado complejo para ser tratado en un ensayo breve, las siguientes páginas explorarán tres expresiones de la misma coyuntura. En primer lugar, las ciencias sociales suelen estudiar el fenómeno migratorio sin reconocer sus profundas implicaciones políticas. Segundo, la historia y la sociología europeas no acostumbran a tener en cuenta la historia de la dominación imperial y las resistencias anticoloniales como intrínsecas a la historia y la sociedad europeas. En tercer lugar, los enfoques hegemónicos de las teorías sociales y políticas tienden a ignorar la importancia estructural de las protestas colectivas y los movimientos de resistencia en la realización de la democracia. Enmarcaremos el análisis de estos problemas en dos contextos teóricos diferentes para observar los cambios o ‘giros’ conceptuales y metodológicos en curso. Los estudios sobre democracia y ciudadanía han sufrido un claro giro hacia las ‘fronteras’. En los estudios sobre migraciones se constata el consiguiente giro hacia la noción de ‘agencia’. Analizando las conexiones entre estos contextos teóricos sugeriré varias vías para resolver estos tres problemas. Comenzaré examinando la primera, consistente en la incapacidad de comprensión de las profundas implicaciones políticas de la migración. Esta discusión conduce a las otras dos vías, relativas al legado del colonialismo y el sentido de la agencia política y la protesta.

Thermal barrier coatings have the potential to improve the fuel efficiency of heavy-duty diesel engines by reducing heat losses. A method for in-situ measurement of heat flux from the combustion chamber of a heavy-duty diesel engine has been developed and was used to study the running-in behaviour of different thermal barrier coating materials and types of microstructures. The in-situ measurements show that the initial heat flux was reduced by up to 4.7% for all investigated thermal barrier coatings compared to a steel reference, except for an yttria-stabilized zirconia coating with sealed pores that had an increase of 12.0% in heat flux. Gd2Zr2O7 had the lowest initial value for heat flux. However, running-in shows the lowest values for yttria-stabilized zirconia after 2–3 h. Potential spallation problems were observed for Gd2Zr2O7 and La2Zr2O7.

This paper investigates the combustion synthesis of NiAl-Al2O3 composites by the heating of Ni, NiO and Al powder mixture from 20 °C to 1300 °C. The influence of mechanical activation (without and with 1 h) and heating rate (20 °C/min and 40 °C/min) on thermal events in combustion synthesis process are investigated. Thermal events are assessed by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). By heating the sample without mechanical activation, exothermic reaction of NiO reduction by Al and Ni-Al intermetallic phases (Al3Ni, Al3Ni2, AlNi and AlNi3) production happened in the presence of molten Al at 870 °C as one DTA peak. Mechanical activation causes occurrence of these reactions more separately at lower temperatures (590 °C and 630 °C). By decrement in the heating rate, these reactions happened in a more dispersed way at lower temperatures (590 °C and 630 °C). The reaction temperature for nickel aluminides formation in the presence of eutectic melt of AlNi3-Al is constant regardless of heating rate in mechanically activated powder. A seven-stage mechanism for reactions in a mechanically activated sample at a heating rate of 40 °C/min is proposed. Initially, by heating of the powder, an exothermic reaction between nickel oxide and aluminum and also nickel and aluminum occurs at 590 °C in solid state. NiO is consumed totally and Al2O3 is produced from the nickel oxide reduction by aluminum. Nickel aluminide phases are formed from reactions between aluminum and primary nickel and also from aluminum and nickel formed by aluminothermic reduction of nickel oxide. With continuation of heating process, Al-Al3Ni eutectic transition happens at 630 °C and results in the liquid phase formation. Presence of the molten phase accelerates the exothermic nickel aluminides formation reactions. Aluminum is consumed totally in this stage and more intermetallic phases are developed. By increasing the temperature, diffusion is enhanced. The remaining Al3Ni melts at 856 °C. This small amount of molten phase slightly enhances exothermic reactions between nickel aluminides and leads the system towards the equilibrium phase. After this event, reactions progresses gradually. The nickel core shrinks by the diffusion progressively and the whole nickel aluminides system undergoes a gradual evolution towards the NiAl equilibrium phase.

Aims The aim of this study was to use human genetics to investigate the pathogenesis of sick sinus syndrome (SSS) and the role of risk factors in its development. Methods and results We performed a genome-wide association study of 6469 SSS cases and 1 000 187 controls from deCODE genetics, the Copenhagen Hospital Biobank, UK Biobank, and the HUNT study. Variants at six loci associated with SSS, a reported missense variant in MYH6, known atrial fibrillation (AF)/electrocardiogram variants at PITX2, ZFHX3, TTN/CCDC141, and SCN10A and a low-frequency (MAF = 1.1–1.8%) missense variant, p.Gly62Cys in KRT8 encoding the intermediate filament protein keratin 8. A full genotypic model best described the p.Gly62Cys association (P = 1.6 × 10−20), with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.44 for heterozygotes and a disproportionally large OR of 13.99 for homozygotes. All the SSS variants increased the risk of pacemaker implantation. Their association with AF varied and p.Gly62Cys was the only variant not associating with any other arrhythmia or cardiovascular disease. We tested 17 exposure phenotypes in polygenic score (PGS) and Mendelian randomization analyses. Only two associated with the risk of SSS in Mendelian randomization, AF, and lower heart rate, suggesting causality. Powerful PGS analyses provided convincing evidence against causal associations for body mass index, cholesterol, triglycerides, and type 2 diabetes (P > 0.05). Conclusion We report the associations of variants at six loci with SSS, including a missense variant in KRT8 that confers high risk in homozygotes and points to a mechanism specific to SSS development. Mendelian randomization supports a causal role for AF in the development of SSS., Graphical Abstract Summary of genetic insight into the pathogenesis of SSS and the role of risk factors in its development. Variants at six loci (named by corresponding gene names) were identified through GWAS and their unique phenotypic associations provide insight into distinct pathways underlying SSS. Investigation of the role of risk factors in SSS development supported a causal role for AF and heart rate and provided convincing evidence against causality for BMI, cholesterol (HDL and non-HDL), triglycerides and T2D. Mendelian randomization did not support causality for CAD, ischaemic stroke, heart failure, PR interval or QRS duration (not shown in figure). Endothelial cells lining blood vessels have phenotypic variations that indicate the health/disease status for a variety of conditions, including atherosclerosis and hypertension. Current sampling strategies lead to a high variation in the sampled amount, and we are not aware of sampling tools specifically targeting endothelial cells. Here, we present a new type of endovascular catheter for sampling of the blood vessel wall. The catheter is a 380 μm nitinol tube over which 3D printed graters are threaded. The catheter is designed to be non-invasive during the axial motion and to interact with the blood vessel wall when rotated. Initial results indicate successful in-vivo sampling - with minimal blood contamination - of the wall of blood vessels less than 0.5 mm in diameter.

This article offers a collectively developed analysis of the Covid-19 crisis as it relates to contemporary cultures of rejection, i.e. the socio- cultural conditions in which authoritarian and right-wing populist politics thrive, in Europe. We explore how the pandemic and its management reinforces, transforms and/or overrides existing antagonisms and institutes new ones in Serbia, Croatia, Austria, Germany and Sweden. We discuss how the Covid-19 crisis affects the rise of new statisms ; gendered patterns of social reproduction ; mobility and migration ; digital infrastructures ; and new political mobilizations.

Semisolid casting can provide excellent castings, but the nature of the pore-forming mechanisms has not been properly clarified. In the current communication, it was suggested that hydrogen precipitated during slurry making might have a decisive role in the formation of both gas and shrinkage porosity. Intensive stirring at the end of the slurry making process may act as a degassing step. Without the intense shearing, structures of primary slurry particles form around the hydrogen pores, strongly affecting pore formation and feeding during the intensification stage.

Endomyocardial biopsy is a valuable tool in cardiac diagnostics but is limited by low diagnostic yield and significant complication risks. Meanwhile, recent developments in transcriptomic and proteomic technologies promise a wealth of biological data from minimal tissue samples. To take advantage of the minimal tissue amount needed for molecular analyses, we have developed a sub-millimeter endovascular biopsy device, considerably smaller than current clinical equipment, and devised a low-input RNA-sequencing protocol for analyzing small tissue samples. In in vivo evaluation in swine, 81% of biopsy attempts (n = 157) were successful. High quality RNA-sequencing data was generated from 91% of the sequenced cardiac micro-biopsy samples (n = 32). Gene expression signatures of samples taken with the novel device were comparable with a conventional device. No major complications were detected either during procedures or during 7 days’ follow-up, despite acquiring a relatively large number of biopsies (median 30) in each animal. In conclusion, the novel device coupled with RNA-sequencing provides a feasible method to obtain molecular data from the myocardium. The method is less traumatic and has a higher flexibility compared to conventional methods, enabling safer and more targeted sampling from different parts of the myocardium.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Hemoglobin is the essential oxygen-carrying molecule in humans and is regulated by cellular iron and oxygen sensing mechanisms. To search for novel variants associated with hemoglobin concentration, we performed genome-wide association studies of hemoglobin concentration using a combined set of 684,122 individuals from Iceland and the UK. Notably, we found seven novel variants, six rare coding and one common, at the ACO1 locus associating with either decreased or increased hemoglobin concentration. Of these variants, the missense Cys506Ser and the stop-gained Lys334Ter mutations are specific to eight and ten generation pedigrees, respectively, and have the two largest effects in the study (EffectCys506Ser = −1.61 SD, CI95 = [−1.98, −1.35]; EffectLys334Ter = 0.63 SD, CI95 = [0.36, 0.91]). We also find Cys506Ser to associate with increased risk of persistent anemia (OR = 17.1, P = 2 × 10−14). The strong bidirectional effects seen in this study implicate ACO1, a known iron sensing molecule, as a major homeostatic regulator of hemoglobin concentration., We thank the individuals who participated in this study and whose contributions made this work possible. We present a new type of microbiopsy tool (MBT) an order of magnitude smaller than commercially available biopsy catheters that, together with a trans-vessel wall catheter (Extroducer) successfully samples soft tissues with significantly less trauma to the tissue than commercial catheters. The MBT is mounted on a Nitinol wire. It features a gripping action that is actuated by the relative motion inside the Extroducer and has demonstrated repeated successful tissue sampling of approximately 500–1000 cells in ex-vivo tissue. This new catheter system can potentially allow super-selective, minimally invasive tissue sampling and transcriptomic analysis from hard to reach areas.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein), Gallstones are responsible for one of the most common diseases in the Western world and are commonly treated with cholecystectomy. We perform a meta-analysis of two genomewide association studies of gallstone disease in Iceland and the UK, totaling 27,174 cases and 736,838 controls, uncovering 21 novel gallstone-associated variants at 20 loci. Two distinct low frequency missense variants in SLC10A2, encoding the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT), associate with an increased risk of gallstone disease (Pro290Ser: OR = 1.36 [1.25–1.49], P = 2.1 × 10–12, MAF = 1%; Val98Ile: OR = 1.15 [1.10–1.20], P = 1.8 × 10–10, MAF = 4%). We demonstrate that lower bile acid transport by ASBT is accompanied by greater risk of gallstone disease and highlight the role of the intestinal compartment of the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids in gallstone disease susceptibility. Additionally, two low frequency missense variants in SERPINA1 and HNF4A and 17 common variants represent novel associations with gallstone disease., We thank the individuals who participated in this study and whose contribution made this work possible. Osteoarthritis has a highly negative impact on quality of life because of the associated pain and loss of joint function. Here we describe the largest meta-analysis so far of osteoarthritis of the hip and the knee in samples from Iceland and the UK Biobank (including 17,151 hip osteoarthritis patients, 23,877 knee osteoarthritis patients, and more than 562,000 controls). We found 23 independent associations at 22 loci in the additive meta-analyses, of which 16 of the loci were novel: 12 for hip and 4 for knee osteoarthritis. Two associations are between rare or low-frequency missense variants and hip osteoarthritis, affecting the genes SMO (rs143083812, frequency 0.11%, odds ratio (OR) = 2.8, P = 7.9 × 10-12, p.Arg173Cys) and IL11 (rs4252548, frequency 2.08%, OR = 1.30, P = 2.1 × 10-11, p.Arg112His). A common missense variant in the COL11A1 gene also associates with hip osteoarthritis (rs3753841, frequency 61%, P = 5.2 × 10-10, OR = 1.08, p.Pro1284Leu). In addition, using a recessive model, we confirm an association between hip osteoarthritis and a variant of CHADL1 (rs117018441, P = 1.8 × 10-25, OR = 5.9). Furthermore, we observe a complex relationship between height and risk of osteoarthritis.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) may improve the fuel efficiency of heavy-duty diesel engines by reducing heat losses. A combination of durability, low thermal conductivity, and high directional hemispherical reflectance is required for a TBC in the combustion chamber. These properties are evaluated for yttria-stabilized zirconia coatings, produced using atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and plasma spray–physical vapour deposition (PS-PVD). The influences of different types of microstructure and metallic coatings on the surface are studied. APS coatings with segmentation cracks and PS-PVD coatings with columnar microstructure have the best thermal cycling lifetime, while nanostructured and conventional APS coatings have the lowest thermal conductivities. The nanostructured APS coating has the highest reflectance at low temperatures, while the columnar PS-PVD coating has the highest reflectance at elevated temperatures. It is further demonstrated that a thin silver layer improves the reflectance of a dense, segmented APS YSZ coating.

In the present study, low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests and oxidation tests in controlled atmospheres are carried out at 800°C on two ductile cast irons SiMo51 and SiMo1000. The LCF tests are carried out in argon and synthetic exhaust gas, whereas oxidation tests are carried out in the latter atmosphere. S-N curves and weight-gain curves are presented. The crack growth mechanisms and oxidation mechanisms are investigated, as well as the synergetic effects. A surprising finding of increased fatigue resistance in oxidizing atmosphere is partly explained.

Most sequence variants identified hitherto in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of atrial fibrillation are common, non-coding variants associated with risk through unknown mechanisms. We performed a meta-analysis of GWAS of atrial fibrillation among 29,502 cases and 767,760 controls from Iceland and the UK Biobank with follow-up in samples from Norway and the US, focusing on low-frequency coding and splice variants aiming to identify causal genes. We observe associations with one missense (OR = 1.20) and one splice-donor variant (OR = 1.50) in RPL3L, the first ribosomal gene implicated in atrial fibrillation to our knowledge. Analysis of 167 RNA samples from the right atrium reveals that the splice-donor variant in RPL3L results in exon skipping. We also observe an association with a missense variant in MYZAP (OR = 1.38), encoding a component of the intercalated discs of cardiomyocytes. Both discoveries emphasize the close relationship between the mechanical and electrical function of the heart.

Purpose In mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for ischemic stroke, endothelial cells (ECs) from intracranial blood vessels adhere to the stent retriever device and can be harvested. However, understanding the molecular biology and the role of the endothelium in different pathological conditions remains insufficient. The purpose of the study was to characterize and analyze the molecular aspect of harvested ECs using cell culture and transcriptomic techniques in an MT swine model relevant to clinical ischemic stroke. Methods In swine, preformed thrombi were injected into the external carotid and subclavian arteries to occlude their branches. MT was performed according to clinical routine. The stent retriever device and thrombus were treated with cell dissociation buffer. The resulting cell suspension was analyzed by immunohistochemistry and was cultured. Cultured cells were analyzed using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) after fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). Results A total number of 37 samples were obtained containing CD31-positive cells. Cell culture was successful in 90% of samples, and the cells expressed multiple typical EC protein markers. Eighty-nine percent of the sorted cells yielded high-quality transcriptomes, and single-cell transcriptomes from cultured cells showed that they expressed typical endothelial gene patterns. Gene expression analysis of ECs from an occluded artery did not show distinctive clustering into subtypes. Conclusion ECs harvested during MT can be cultured and analyzed using single-cell transcriptomic techniques. This analysis can be implemented in clinical practice to study the EC gene expression of comorbidities, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome, in patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke.

In this work, synthesis of NiAl–Al2O3 nanocomposite powders via the mechanosynthesis route and by using Ni, NiO and Al is investigated. Ignition of the reaction inside the ball-mill vial happens after 110 min; NiO is totally finished and NiAl and Al2O3 as product phases are formed. After 10 h of ball milling, raw materials are totally used in the reaction and only product phases exist in the vial. By continuing the ball milling process to 60 h, better mixing of the synthesized phases and decrement in their crystallite sizes plus particle size are observed. Crystallite sizes of the product phases are in the nanometer range in all ball milling times. Crystallite sizes of NiAl and Al2O3 after 10 h are around 11 nm and 19 nm respectively, and these are reduced to around 8 nm for both phases after 60 h of ball milling.

The cavitation erosion mechanisms of three austempered ductile irons (ADIs) of 279, 333 and 469 Brinell hardness in a heavy-duty engine coolant at 82 °C were described. Sample weight was measured in 14 time steps up to 4 h and complemented by image sequences showing surface damage evolution in detail. A rapid mass loss during the first 1.5 min was attributed to surface graphite erosion, with complete nodule removal within 5 min in all ADIs. Matrix erosion became steady after 30 min, but differed in severity between ADIs, with relative mass loss rates of 4.3 : 1.5 : 1 for ADIs of low, medium and high hardness, respectively.

Ingileif Jonsdottir, Bjorn Nilsson, Kari Stefansson and colleagues perform a genome-wide association study for immunoglobulin levels in Icelandic and Swedish cohorts. They find 38 new variants associated with IgA, IgG, IgM or composite immunoglobulin traits and identify candidate genes underlying the regulation of immunoglobulin levels. Immunoglobulins are the effector molecules of the adaptive humoral immune system. In a genome-wide association study of 19,219 individuals, we found 38 new variants and replicated 5 known variants associating with IgA, IgG or IgM levels or with composite immunoglobulin traits, accounted for by 32 loci. Variants at these loci also affect the risk of autoimmune diseases and blood malignancies and influence blood cell development. Notable associations include a rare variant at RUNX3 decreasing IgA levels by shifting isoform proportions (rs188468174[C>T]: P = 8.3 × 10−55, β = −0.90 s.d.), a rare in-frame deletion in FCGR2B abolishing IgG binding to the encoded receptor (p.Asn106del: P = 4.2 × 10−8, β = 1.03 s.d.), four IGH locus variants influencing class switching, and ten new associations with the HLA region. Our results provide new insight into the regulation of humoral immunity.
