Solvent-free inorganic-organic hybrid polymers were prepared for digital light processing (DLP) and ink-jet printing. The resins were characterized in terms of viscosity, surface tension, and refractive index. Optical bulk components were prepared with both printing techniques and compared regarding their surface roughness and optical scattering. The haze of DLP-samples can be avoided by inkjet 3D printing. Moreover, different quantum dots (QD) could be incorporated into resins; DLP resulted in complex 3D assemblies.

Heterogeneous materials with tailored, site-specific physical properties, ubiquitously found in biological systems, can reach optimal performances in applications. Compared to homogeneous materials or composite materials with random, disordered microstructures, materials with locally addressable properties achieve higher strength at lower density, or record-high shock absorption properties. A classic example of tailored, heterogeneous materials are functionally graded materials or materials where stiffness variations in bulk are controllable. However, current methods to locally control stiffness in a solid are mostly limited to geometrical variation of architected micro-structures, or to the creation of multi-material composites. Here, a novel approach to program stiffness variations within a single material system is presented. By subsequent exposure of a pre-crosslinked polymeric matrix using two-photon polymerization, arbitrary three-dimensional architectures with locally addressable stiffness variations are fabricated. Furthermore, the extension of the hierarchical level of three-dimensional micro-architectures by property variations in the constituent material is demonstrated. The programmable stiffness variations, in the sub-micron range, are either continuous or sharply confined, with a stiffness increase of up to 200% compared to the pre-crosslinked matrix. This site-specific control of stiffness and internal architecture opens the door for engineering materials with unprecedented mechanical properties.

The technology transfer from an academic level to industrial application requires adapted materials and processes which enable a reliable high-throughput fabrication. The key factor to reach this level of maturity is a good combination of materials and processing strategies carried out on appropriate hardware.

Die Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Etablierung einer neuen Materialplattform, den Ormoceren (OCs) für die Zwei-Photonen Polymerisation (2PP), um den Stand der Technik erheblich zu verbessern. Ormocere bieten maßgeschneiderte Eigenschaftsprofile für die jeweils adressierte Applikation. Dafür wurden im ersten Teil der Arbeit Studien zur Vertiefung des Prozessverständnisses durchgeführt. Hier wurde gezeigt, dass die Voxelentstehung auf drei grundlegende Wechselwirkungsmechanismen - technisches Anregungsvolumen, Schwellwertprozess und chemisches Reaktionsvolumen - zurückzuführen ist. Diese Mechanismen wurden für neuartige OC-Systeme jeweils untersucht. Erstmals konnten in einem Styryl-haltigen OCSystem Voxelgrößen im Bereich von 100 nm reproduzierbar erreicht werden, ohne dafür auf aufwendige Techniken wie STED-Lithographie zurückgreifen zu müssen. Im Rahmen der Voxelgrößenuntersuchungen konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass sich einfache in der Literatur vertretene Wachstumsmodelle nur sehr bedingt auf die eingesetzten OC-Systeme übertragen lassen. Deswegen wurde ein numerisches Modell zur Simulation der Vernetzungsmechanismen in der 2PP entwickelt, das auf experimentellen Daten aus UV-DSC Experimenten beruht. Im Vorgriff auf den Applikationsteil wurde außerdem erstmals und systematisch mittels Mikro-Raman-Spektroskopie untersucht, wie der Vernetzungsgrad und schließlich die mechanischen Eigenschaften von den Herstellungsparametern Laserleistung und Rasterabstand abhängen. Außerdem wurde die Ausbildung von Oberflächen in den betrachteten OC-Systemen ausführlich untersucht. Mit den gewonnen fundamentalen Erkenntnissen wurden verschiedene anwendungsrelevante Mikrostrukturen hergestellt, die im zweiten Teil der Arbeit vorgestellt werden. Dazu gehören asphärische Mikrolinsen, deren präzise Herstellung signifikant beschleunigt werden konnte. Die Genauigkeit der Herstellung ist gegenüber dem Stand der Technik erheblich verbessert. Im Falle von Diffraktiven Optischen Elementen (DOEs) konnte ebenfalls eine gegenüber dem Stand der Technik stark verbesserte, sehr präzise und schnelle Herstellung demonstriert werden.
