17. Synchronous presentation of recurrent intracranial solitary fibrous tumour and chronic myeloid leukaemia: a diagnostic challenge.

Abstract

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) and chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) are both uncommon neoplasms with distinct chromosomal aberrations and clinical presentations. Here, we present a case of a male in his late 50s with a history of intracranial SFT who presented 8 years after subtotal resection and adjuvant radiotherapy with splenic infarcts, a white blood cell of 83 000 cells/mL, and liver masses. He was treated with dasatinib for CML and temozolomide/bevacizumab for SFT. This case emphasises the benefits of broad differential diagnoses that include multiple concurrent disease processes when confronted with unusual presentations. It highlights the need for interdisciplinary efforts and personalised approaches when managing patients with multiple primary malignancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the synthesis of core‐shell Ni−Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with varying degrees of crystallographic facets and surface layers rich in Pt via a seed‐mediated thermolytic approach. Mixtures of different surfactants used during synthesis resulted in preferential surface passivation, which in turn dictated the size, chemical composition, and geometric evolution of these PtNi NPs. Electrochemical investigations of these pristine core‐shell Ni−Pt structures in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) show that their catalytic functionalities outperform the commercial Pt/C reference catalyst. The enhanced electrocatalytic ORR performances of these Pt‐based PtNi NPs are correlated with the weakened oxygen binding strength or surface‐adsorbed hydroxyl (OH) species on active Pt surface sites induced by the downshift of the d‐band center as a result of compressive strain effects. Abstract

Generation of biofuels from sugars in lignocellulosic biomass is a promising alternative to liquid fossil fuels, but efficient and inexpensive bioprocessing configurations must be developed to make this technology commercially viable. One of the major barriers to commercialization is the recalcitrance of plant cell wall polysaccharides to enzymatic hydrolysis. Biomass pretreatment with ionic liquids (ILs) enables efficient saccharification of biomass, but residual ILs inhibit both saccharification and microbial fuel production, requiring extensive washing after IL pretreatment. Pretreatment itself can also produce biomass-derived inhibitory compounds that reduce microbial fuel production. Therefore, there are multiple points in the process from biomass to biofuel production that must be interrogated and optimized to maximize fuel production. Here, we report the development of an IL-tolerant cellulase cocktail by combining thermophilic bacterial glycoside hydrolases produced by a mixed consortia with recombinant glycoside hydrolases. This enzymatic cocktail saccharifies IL-pretreated biomass at higher temperatures and in the presence of much higher IL concentrations than commercial fungal cocktails. Sugars obtained from saccharification of IL-pretreated switchgrass using this cocktail can be converted into biodiesel (fatty acid ethyl-esters or FAEEs) by a metabolically engineered strain of E. coli. During these studies, we found that this biodiesel-producing E. coli strain was sensitive to ILs and inhibitors released by saccharification. This cocktail will enable the development of novel biomass to biofuel bioprocessing configurations that may overcome some of the barriers to production of inexpensive cellulosic biofuels.

Abstract

Platinum supported on different oxides is an effective catalyst for the benzyl alcohol oxidation, but the type of support material affects the overall catalytic performance. Here, the performance of dispersed platinum nanoparticles in range of 2.5-4.6 nm supported on reducible oxides (TiO2(P25), CeO2, MoO3 and 1-Fe2O3) and an irreducible oxide(1-Al2O3) is investigated for the application of benzyl alcohol oxidation catalysts in the presence of liquid water. The difference in the performance is attributed to the ability of the support to accept hydrogen from benzyl alcohol adsorbed on platinum and the ability to remove surface hydroxyl groups in the form of water.
