The choice of method and materials for pile foundations in Norway often builds on the experience of the involved parties and a preference of solutions with fewer, high-capacity piles compared to more, low-capacity piles. In many cases the foundations do not get optimized with regard to resource use and cost. Timber piles, which had a long tradition in the country, are now rarely used. In urban environments, where marine clays are the dominant geological surface formation, shallow building foundations on stabilized ground could be considered. Yet, piled solutions to bedrock are usually chosen due to the concerns related to settlements induced by other building projects. To investigate whether the current practice could be improved, a desk study was conducted comparing cost and carbon emissions for four different foundation solutions for a bridge foundation in sand (steel pipe piles, HP steel pile, prefabricated concrete piles and timber/concrete combination piles). For a typical building project in Norway, a direct foundation on stabilized clay was compared to the usually chosen piles to bedrock solution. It is discussed what alternatives might be feasible with respect to practicality, robustness, costs, sustainability and environmental issues. Pesquisa sem auxílio de agências de fomento Os blocos sobre estacas são elementos de fundação que são responsáveis por transmitir as cargas dos pilares para as estacas. Para compreender como essa transmissão de cargas e os esforços que ocorrem dentro dos blocos sobre estacas, diversos métodos e modelos foram desenvolvidos na literatura, ressaltando-se o Método de Bielas e Tirantes, método cuja premissa inicial é a existência de uma treliça no interior dos blocos, onde os esforços das bielas são resistidos pelo concreto e os esforços nos tirantes são resistidos pelas armaduras do bloco. O trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o comportamento dos blocos de fundação quando são utilizadas estacas metálicas. A primeira parte do trabalho foi um estudo dos ensaios experimentais de diversos autores analisando os resultados mediante diferentes modelos de cálculos e limites da literatura, com o intuito de observar as diferenças entre os modelos. Com essas análises, verificou-se que os modelos de cálculos e limites da literatura apresentam divergências entre si e, com isso, realizou-se uma análise crítica destes resultados, ressaltando-se a importância do conhecimento das hipóteses e limitações de cada um. A segunda parte do trabalho consistiu no ensaio experimental de quatro blocos sobre duas estacas metálicas onde a variável era o posicionamento da armadura principal de tração do bloco. Com os experimentos, pôde-se observar que quando a armadura principal de tração é posicionada lateralmente ao topo da estaca metálica há uma maior ramificação das fissuras, enquanto o bloco com armadura posicionada sobre o topo da estaca apresenta uma maior rigidez aos deslocamentos. Além disso, os ensaios demonstraram que os blocos de fundação apresentaram comportamento semelhante ao comportamento estudado por outros autores da literatura, confirmando também duas hipóteses apresentadas em outros estudos: a força atuante no tirante não é constante em todo seu comprimento e a estaca está sujeita a esforços de flexo-compressão. Piling caps are foundation elements that are responsible for transmitting the loads from the columns to the piles. Several methods and models have been developed in the literature aiming to understand the proccess of transference and the current efforts, with emphasis on the Strut-and-tie Method, a method whose initial premise is the existence of a dimensional truss inside of the blocks, where the struts compressions are resisted by the concrete and the tie tensils are resisted by the pile cap reinforcement. The aim of this thesis was to analyze the behavior of pile caps when using steel piles. The first part of the thesis was a study of the experimental tests of several authors, analyzing the results through different design models and literature limits, in order to observe the differences between the models. With these analyses, it was found that the design models and limits in the literature are different from each other and, therefore, a throughout analysis was required, emphasizing the importance of knowing the hypotheses and limitations of each subject. The second part of the was a experimental test of four pile caps on two metal piles where the variable was the position of the rebar of the pile cap. After the experiments, it was observed that when rebar is positioned laterally to the top of the metallic pile, there is a greater ramification of the cracks, while the pile cap with rebar positioned on the top of the pile presents a greater stiffness. Furthermore, the tests showed that the pile caps tested presented as same behavior as studied by other authors in the literature, also confirming two hypotheses presented in other studies: the force on the tie is not constant throughout its length and the pile is subject to flexion-compression efforts. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Os objetivos deste trabalho foram estudar o comportamento mecânico de blocos sobre duas estacas metálicas em perfil I sob ação de força centrada mediante diferentes arranjos da ligação estaca-bloco e avaliar modelos analíticos recomendados pela literatura técnica. Foi feita uma modelagem computacional por meio do programa computacional ANSYS® de um bloco sobre duas estacas, comparada com os resultados experimentais de Tomaz (2018). A partir dos parâmetros desta modelagem foram elaborados 63 modelos numéricos. Por meio de uma análise de variância dos resultados verificou-se que as variáveis que influênciaram sobre a capacidade portante dos blocos foram o comprimento de embutimento e a resistência à compressão do concreto. Foi desenvolvido um programa experimental com 3 espécimes em escala real de blocos sobre duas estacas metálicas, nos quais variou-se o tipo de arranjo da ligação entre estaca e bloco. Foram estudadas os arranjos da ligação por meio de barras soldadas e por meio de barras soldadas com estribos amarrados às mesmas. Os tipos de arranjo da ligação não influenciaram sobre a capacidade portante dos blocos, porém a ligação entre estaca e bloco por meio de barras soldadas ao perfil e estribos melhorou a distribuição de fissuras e a ductilidade. O modelo analítico de Meléndez et al. (2019) foi o mais preciso na determinação da força de ruína dos blocos. O critério de caracterização de comportamento de blocos sobre estacas adotado pela ABNT NBR 6118 (2014) não é adequado pois não considera a inclinação da biela de compressão, que é um dos principais parâmetros de dimensionamento. The objective of this research was to study the mechanic behavior of pile caps on two steel piles submitted to centered loading with different arrangements of the connection between pile and pile cap and to evaluate analytical models found on the technical literature. A numerical analysis of a pile cap on two steel piles was made by using the software ANSYS®, compared with experimental results from Tomaz (2018). From the parameters defined on the numerical analysis, 63 other numerical models were developed. An analysis of variance of the results obtained pointed that the variables that had an impact over the pile cap’s bearing capacity were the embedment length of the pile and the compressive strength of the concrete. An experimental program with three models of full-scale pile caps on two steel piles were executed, in which the type of arrangement of the connection between pile and pile cap varied. The types of arrangement studied were bars welded on the steel pile and bars welded on the steel pile along with stirrups. The type of arrangement had no impact on the pile cap’s bearing capacity, however, the arrangement with bars welded on the steel pile along with stirrups improved the crack distribution and ductility. The analytical model from Meléndez et al. (2019) was the most precise on predicting the ultimate load of the pile caps. The criteria from ABNT NBT 6118 (2014) that characterizes the behavior of pile caps is not adequate as it does not consider the inclination of the strut, which is one of the main parameters of design. The last hundreds of years there has been a land elevation that causes an increased distance between the groundwater level and the buildings founded on wooden piles. When wooden piles are exposed to air, rot fungus occurs which causes the pile to lose its bearing capacity. With the critical problem of housing shortage, the demand can be met if an innovative solution is created by extending a superstructure on top of an existing building within the city center of Stockholm. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether it is profitable to extend an existing building with a superstructure when reinforcing an existing foundation. By an extensive literature survey, a model is created and exposed to several analyzes containing both analytical and numerical calculations. Based on the acquired knowledge, the model reflects the most common building built within the city center of Stockholm, that was founded on wooden piles, where the geological conditions consist of clay. A new foundation has been designed consisting of drilled end-bearing steel piles. For the two pile dimensions of RD220/12.5 and RD170/10, the possible load transfer methods of full niches, ground beam with half a niche, yoke beams and slab with half a niche are analyzed, respectively. These methods were combined differently to obtain the possible combinations performed in this building, that in turn, gives the difference in the amount of work and costs. An intended superstructure consisting of four storeys in wood is then applied on the existing building to once again, obtain the differences in amount of work and costs. Comparing these two cases, the profitability is determined. The study shows for the larger pile that the superstructure entails no difference in the required amount of piles and therefore, no difference in the total cost compared to the existing building. However, for the smaller pile, the superstructure entails a small increase in the required amount of piles and the cost. The study resulted that the larger pile provides the cheapest geotechnical reinforcement work, regardless if the superstructure is applied or not, compared to the smaller pile. The thesis show that it is profitable to extend an existing building when the existing foundation is strengthened, due to the great revenue of the superstructure, which entails that the profitability is a fact. Under de senaste hundra åren har det skett en landhöjning i Stockholm. Detta medför att byggnader som är grundlagda med träpålar får ett avstånd till grundvattennivån. Träpålarna utsätts då för luft som i sin tur leder till försämrad bärförmåga, vilket innebär att grundläggningen behöver förstärkas. En annan stor utmaning i Stockholm är bostadsbristen. En lösning för att kunna möta efterfrågan på bostäder är att bygga på höjden ovanpå en befintlig byggnad inom Stockholms innerstad. Detta kräver att grundläggningen klarar av att bära en påbyggnation, vilket leder till syftet för denna studie. Syftet med studien är att undersöka om det är lönsamt att bygga på en befintlig byggnad när man samtidigt grundförstärker byggnaden bestående av träpålar. För att besvara studiens syfte har två modeller skapats och analyserats ur fler perspektiv som därefter jämförts. Modellerna baseras på en omfattande litteraturundersökning och återspeglar en befintlig byggnad i form utav den vanligaste byggda byggnaden i Stockholms innerstad med en grundläggning av träpålar. Den första modellen innefattar endast den befintliga byggnaden och den andra modellen innefattar den befintliga byggnaden med en påbyggnation av fyra våningar bestående av trä. En ny grundläggning behövs, då det är svårt att kontrollera bärkapaciteten hos dessa befintliga träpålar. Den nya grundläggningen består utav borrande ändbärande stålpålar där två olika dimensioner undersöks, RD220/12.5 och RD170/10. För dessa två dimensioner har olika lastöverförings- metoder analyserats separat, varav de möjliga metoderna för denna typbyggnad är hela nischer, markbalk med anfang, ok-balk och platta på mark med anfang. Dessa metoder för respektive dimension har kombinerats för att erhålla det totala grundförstärkningsarbetet som i sin tur genererar en skillnad i både mängd arbete och kostnad för de två olika modellerna. Därefter bestäms lönsamheten genom en jämförelse mellan de två olika modellerna. Studien visar att en påbyggnation inte medför någon skillnad i varken erforderlig mängd arbete eller kostnad för den större dimensionen. För den mindre dimensionen erhölls en ökning i både arbete och kostnad. Studien resulterande i att den större dimensionen ger totalt det billigaste grundförstärkningsarbetet, oavsett om en påbyggnation sker eller inte, i jämförelse mot den mindre dimensionen. Vid en grundförstärkning visar studien att det är lönsamt att samtidigt utföra en påbyggnation ovanpå en befintlig byggnad.

With the main objective of contributing to the reliability of steel tubular piles, this research intends to analyze a set of driven steel tubular piles executed in the Baixada Fluminense, using a probabilistic approach. Bayesian theory was adopted, with the uncertainties involved in bearing capacity estimation modeled by a priori and a posteriori distribution. The posterior distribution of the bearing capacity is obtained from the updating of the a priori bearing capacity by means of the likelihood functions. For a priori distribution, two models load capacity estimation were used, one theoretical, named as β by Fellenius (2016), and another semi-empirical one, Aoki-Velloso (1975). In relation to the likelihood functions, the results of the dynamic formulas of Sorensen and Hansen (1957), known as the Danish formula, and also that known by Aoki (1986) were adopted. The results of the posterior distribution presented less uncertainty when the Danish formula was considered for likelihood function. An estimation of set-up was also made, both on the basis of the interpretation of dynamic tests and also with interpretation through static tests. Na elaboração de um projeto de fundações, o engenheiro geotécnico se depara com inúmeras incertezas, em consequência da variabilidade espacial dos parâmetros geotécnicos, limitação dos modelos de análise e reduzida investigação geotécnica do subsolo. Com o objetivo de contribuir na confiabilidade de estacas tubulares metálicas, esta dissertação propõe o estudo de um conjunto de estacas executadas na Baixada Fluminense, utilizando uma abordagem probabilística. Foi adotado a teoria bayesiana onde as incertezas envolvidas foram modeladas por distribuições à priori e a posteriori. A distribuição a posteriori é obtida da atualização da capacidade de carga à priori por meio das funções de verossimilhança. Para a distribuição à priori, foram utilizados dois métodos de cálculo de capacidade de carga, um teórico, denominado como β por Fellenius (2016), e outro semi empírico, Aoki-Velloso (1975). Em relação às funções de verossimilhança foram adotados os resultados das fórmulas dinâmicas de Sorensen e Hansen (1957), conhecida como fórmula dos Dinamarqueses, e de Aoki (1986). Os resultados da distribuição a posteriori apresentam uma menor incerteza quando se considera, para a verossimilhança, a fórmula dos Dinamarqueses. Uma estimativa de set-up também foi realizada, tanto com base na interpretação dos ensaios dinâmicos como com a interpretação através dos ensaios estáticos.

In 1999 research was started at Luleå University of Technology with the purpose to collect experiences from USA and UK on bridges with integral abutments and transfer the experience to Swedish conditions. Since then at least 20 integral bridges with one row of piles under each abutment have been built in Sweden and the European research project INTAB has been completed. Most of the bridges are short and it seems to be difficult to design integral bridges that are longer than 40 m. The reason for this being that piles in integral abutment bridges can experience severe strain during service due to soil restraint and annual fluctuations in bridge temperature, which displace and rotate the end of the pile that is clamped to the superstructure. Most design codes do not allow strains exceeding the yield point at the serviceability limit state (e.g. EN 1993-2). This will limit the possibility to build longer integral abutment bridges founded on steel piles. Since bridges are designed to be used 100 years or more, the strains caused by the annual temperature variations can be considered as a low cycle fatigue problem.The aim of this thesis is to improve the method to design steel piles in integral abutment bridges. This means that the designer with less effort should be able to make a safer or equally safe design as before by using the methods described in this thesis. The thesis describes how the analysis of piles of integral abutment bridges can be done. In order to study how steel piles in integral abutments are used and how they behave an international workshop was arranged in Stockholm (Collin et. al. 2006), a literature study was conducted, a bridge was designed, built and monitored and laboratory tests were made. With the results from the research activities as base a design method is suggested. Under 1999 startades ett forskningsprojekt vid Luleå tekniska universitet med syfte att samla in erfarenheter, vad gäller broar med integrerade landfästen, från USA och Storbritannien och överföra dessa till svenska förhållanden. Sedan dess har minst 20 broar med integrerade landfästen (med en rad av pålar under varje landfäste) byggts i Sverige och det europeiska forskningsprojektet INTAB har slutförts. De flesta av broarna är korta och det verkar vara svårt att utforma broar med integrerade landfästen som är längre än 40 meter. Anledningen till detta är att pålar i broar med integrerade landfästen kan utsättas för höga töjningar under drift på grund av omgivande jords styvhet och temperaturvariationer, vilket förskjuter och roterar påltoppen som är fastspänd i överbyggnaden. De flesta normer tillåter inte att töjningar i stål överskrider sträckgränsen i bruksgränstillstånd (t.ex. EN 1993-2). Detta begränsar möjligheten att bygga längre broar med integrerade landfästen på stålpålar. Syftet med denna avhandling är att förbättra metoden för att dimensionera stålpålar i broar med integrerade landfästen. Det innebär att konstruktören med mindre ansträngning ska kunna göra en säkrare eller lika säker konstruktion som tidigare med hjälp av de metoder som beskrivs i denna avhandling. Avhandlingen beskriver hur analysen av pålar i broar med integrerade landfästen kan göras. The Mirna viaduct crosses the Mirna River valley on Nova Vas – Višnjan section of the Istrian “ Y” west leg state road. The construction of the viaduct started in 2002 and it was opened for traffic in June 2005. The overall viaduct length is 1, 378.03 m, with spans L=51.07+15x66.491+70.096+2x50.069+63.087+42.558+30, 542=1354.86 m. The ground plan alignment of the viaduct is in constant curvature of 4, 005.5 m. The vertical grade line alignment is in uniform concave curvature of 17, 500.0 m, following the terrain profile to limit the height of viaduct columns. The overall width of the viaduct deck without cornices is 10.10 m. The relatively slender continuous superstructure comprises two main steel 2, 750.0 mm deep plate girders spaced at 5, 500.0 mm, cross beams in frame action and a concrete 25.0 cm deep deck plate in composite action with main girders. A relatively unusual structural bearing layout was adopted, with longitudinally fixed bearings on 13 middle piers, made possible by the low horizontal stiffness of friction steel pile foundations in adverse soil conditions. The superstructure is longitudinally restrained at both abutments by viscous dampers. All viaduct piers are very slender of H shaped cross section, comprising a 30.0 cm web and two 35.0 cm flanges extending in the direction of the bridge axis, with varying height 13.45÷40.026 m. Shallow spread foundations are utilized on the solid rock of Mirna valley slopes. All piers in the valley are founded on long driven steel friction piles. Piers were constructed in climbing formwork in 5.0 m long segments with high precision because of their extreme slenderness. The erection of the superstructure was executed by longitudinal launching of steel grillages from both abutments. Concreting of the deck plate was executed on temporary formwork, in strictly prescribed order. A short review of design and construction of the Mirna viaduct is presented in the paper.

Teräksestä valmistettujen rakenteiden ja tuotteiden käyttöikä ei ole ollut kovin merkittävä ongelma, mikä johtuu pääasiassa teräksen käytön lyhyestä historiasta talonrakennuksessa. Terästä on kuitenkin jo pitkän aikaa käytetty melko suurina ainepaksuuksina teollisuus- ja siltarakenteissa. Viime aikoina terästä on alettu käyttää yhä enemmän katto- ja ulkoseinäverhoilussa ja muissa erikoistuotteissa, kuten maa- ja vesirakenteissa, sekä ns. talorakenteissa, kuten palkeissa, pilareissa, perustuksissa, väliseinissä, parveke- ja julkisivurakenteissa, ja rakennusten välipohjissa esim. liittorakenteina. Rakennusten ennustettava käyttöikä on nousemassa puheenaiheeksi rakenteiden suunnittelussa ja rakennustuotteiden markkinoinnissa, missä ympäristövaatimukset ja kunnossapidon ennustettavuus ovat takuiden ja rakennustuoteajattelun takia lisääntymässä. Teräsrakenteiden suunnitteluohjeissa B7 rakenteiden pitkäaikaistoimivuutta on käsitelty lähinnä niiden kestävyyden kannalta, jolloin teräksen korroosio on mielletty lähes ainoaksi asiaan vaikuttavaksi tekijäksi. Rakenteiden toimivuus niiden käyttöiän aikana riippuu kuitenkin lähes yhtä paljon monista muista seikoista, joista pienimpiä ei suinkaan ole ihmisen oman toiminnan tai siihen mahdollisesti liittyvän huolimattomuuden muodostama uhka rakenteille. Teräsrakennetuotteiden myyntiin liittyvän teknisen neuvonnan helpottamiseksi tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin teräsrakenteiden käyttöiän ennustamista ja siihen vaikuttavia seikkoja kolmen eri rakennustuoteryhmän osalta. Nämä ovat ulkoseinäverhoilutuotteet, maa- ja vesirakenteet ja liittorakenteet. Tässä tutkimuksessa päädyttiin käyttöiän suun-nittelussa teräsrakenteiden suunnitteluohjeen B7 suojausmenettelyjen tai korroosiovaran sijasta kolmeen päästrategiaan, joita voidaan soveltaa ko. rakennustuotteelta yleisesti vaadittavan käyttöiän, käyttöympäristön ja olosuhteiden mukaan. Laskentakaava esitettiin standardiluonnoksessa ISO/CD 15686-1, mutta siihen liittyvien kertoimien arvoista on olemassa vasta hyvin vähän tutkimustietoa. Tässä tutkimuksessa ko. menettelyä pyrittiin tarkentamaan tutkimuksessa mukana olleiden terästuoteryhmien osalta.

Teräksestä valmistettujen rakenteiden ja tuotteiden käyttöikä ei ole ollut kovin merkittävä ongelma, mikä johtuu pääasiassa teräksen käytön lyhyestä historiasta talonrakennuksessa. Terästä on kuitenkin jo pitkän aikaa käytetty melko suurina ainepaksuuksina teollisuus- ja siltarakenteissa. Viime aikoina terästä on alettu käyttää yhä enemmän katto- ja ulkoseinäverhoilussa ja muissa erikoistuotteissa, kuten maa- ja vesirakenteissa, sekä ns. talorakenteissa, kuten palkeissa, pilareissa, perustuksissa, väliseinissä, parveke- ja julkisivurakenteissa, ja rakennusten välipohjissa esim. liittorakenteina. Rakennusten ennustettava käyttöikä on nousemassa puheenaiheeksi rakenteiden suunnittelussa ja rakennustuotteiden markkinoinnissa, missä ympäristövaatimukset ja kunnossapidon ennustettavuus ovat takuiden ja rakennustuoteajattelun takia lisääntymässä. Teräsrakenteiden suunnitteluohjeissa B7 rakenteiden pitkäaikaistoimivuutta on käsitelty lähinnä niiden kestävyyden kannalta, jolloin teräksen korroosio on mielletty lähes ainoaksi asiaan vaikuttavaksi tekijäksi. Rakenteiden toimivuus niiden käyttöiän aikana riippuu kuitenkin lähes yhtä paljon monista muista seikoista, joista pienimpiä ei suinkaan ole ihmisen oman toiminnan tai siihen mahdollisesti liittyvän huolimattomuuden muodostama uhka rakenteille. Teräsrakennetuotteiden myyntiin liittyvän teknisen neuvonnan helpottamiseksi tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin teräsrakenteiden käyttöiän ennustamista ja siihen vaikuttavia seikkoja kolmen eri rakennustuoteryhmän osalta. Nämä ovat ulkoseinäverhoilutuotteet, maa- ja vesirakenteet ja liittorakenteet. Tässä tutkimuksessa päädyttiin käyttöiän suun-nittelussa teräsrakenteiden suunnitteluohjeen B7 suojausmenettelyjen tai korroosiovaran sijasta kolmeen päästrategiaan, joita voidaan soveltaa ko. rakennustuotteelta yleisesti vaadittavan käyttöiän, käyttöympäristön ja olosuhteiden mukaan. Strategiat ovat: Ennakoituun käyttöikään perustuva menettely, jota sovelletaan lähinnä ohutlevyistä tehdyille melko lyhyen käyttöiän tuotteille, kuten pinnoitetuiile seinä- ja kattopaneeleille ja levyille, joille ei tehdä muuta suojausta kuin ehkä muovipinnoitus ja joiden tuleva käyttöikä tulee siksi voida arvioida luotettavasti jo niitä myytäessä ja toimitettaessa, Suojausmenettely (useita suojaustapoja), jota sovelletaan lähinnä erikoisempiin olo-suhteisiin toimitettaville terästuotteille, jotka saattavat olla tehtyjä joko ohutlevyistä tai paksummasta materiaalista, mutta joilta kuitenkin odotetaan selvästi pitempiä käyttöikiä, Käyttöikämitoitus, jota on syytä soveltaa suunnittelumenetelmänä lähinnä paksum-masta teräsmateriaalista valmistetuille tuotteille, joilta odotetaan kyseisissä tai muuttuvissa olosuhteissa pitkää käyttöikää, jota valvotaan ja tuetaan esimerkiksi kunnossapidon menetelmin. Rakenteen tai tuotteen ennakoitu käyttöikä on laskettavissa, mikäli tunnetaan riittävän hyvin tuotteen ns. vertailukäyttöikä sekä sen tuotteen asennus- ja käyttöolosuhteista riippuvat korjauskertoimet. Laskentakaava esitettiin standardiluonnoksessa ISO/CD 15686-1, mutta siihen liittyvien kertoimien arvoista on olemassa vasta hyvin vähän tutkimustietoa. Tässä tutkimuksessa ko. menettelyä pyrittiin tarkentamaan tutkimuksessa mukana olleiden terästuoteryhmien osalta.

Use of steel piles in general has continuously increased in the Nordic countries as well as in the harbour structures of the Baltics and Western Europe. The main reasons are the innovative, easy-to-handle but rigid and durable pile joints, application of steel material technology and higher steel strength. The importance of the resistance and stiffness of mechanical joints of slender steel piles is accentuated in soft soil conditions. The wide product range and different installation methods enable versatile applications from light- weight to heavily loaded structures in all soil conditions. In harbour structures bending resistance of the pile is often the dimensioning factor. The latest innovations are the highly rigid retaining wall structure, the RD pile wall installed by drilling in all possible soil conditions and steel piles serving as energy piles that exploit renewable ground source energy both for heating and cooling. There has been wide co-operation in Finland between steel pile manufacturers, contractors, designers, manufacturers of piling equipment, researchers and authorities in developing steel pile technology for almost thirty years.

The adfreeze strength developed during freezing of cylindrical piles to fine Ottawa sand mixed with 14% by weight of water was measured under constant rates of pile displacement on an Instron testing machine and under constant load [in a creep equipment]. Four types of pile were studied: natural B.C. fir, concrete, steel coated with a red oxide primer, and creosoted B.C. fir. Constant rate tests showed that adfreeze strength increased with increasing load rate. Preliminary data from the constant load creep tests indicate that the load dependence of the steady-state creep rate for piles in frozen sand agrees with the displacement rate dependence of the adfreeze strengths determined by extrapolation of the results of the constant rate tests. In general, maximum adfreeze strength developed with natural B.C. fir, and the minimum with creosoted B.C. fir.
