The iron and steel-making industries have garnered significant attention in research related to low-carbon transitions and the reuse of steel slag. This industry is known for its high carbon emissions and the substantial amount of steel slag it generates. To address these challenges, a waste heat recovery process route has been developed for molten steel slag, which integrates CO 2 capture and fixation as well as efficient utilization of steel slag. This process involves the use of lime kiln flue gas from the steel plant as the gas quenching agent, thereby mitigating carbon emissions and facilitating carbonation conversion of steel slag while simultaneously recovering waste heat. The established carbonation model of steel slag reveals that the insufficient diffusion of CO 2 gas molecules within the product layer is the underlying mechanism hindering the carbonation performance of steel slag. This finding forms the basis for enhancing the carbonation performance of steel slag. The results of Aspen Plus simulation indicate that 1 t of steel slag (with a carbonation conversion rate of 15.169 %) can fix 55.19 kg of CO 2 , process 6.08 kmol of flue gas (with a carbon capture rate of 92.733 %), and recover 2.04 GJ of heat, 0.43 GJ of exergy, and 0.68 MWh of operating cost. Textile industries stand out as one of the main polluters of water resources, generating large amounts of liquid effluents with variable composition and intense coloration. The objective of this work is the integration of the reductive process using commercial steel wool, combined with oxidative processes, in the treatment of textile effluent. The effect of the variables of the reductive process were studied using a 32 factorial design. After 30 minutes, the reductive process allowed a reduction of 68% COD, 46% TOC, 62% true color and 72% of total phenols, but showed an increase in color apparent and turbidity, due to the iron species formed by the oxidation of steel wool during the process. With the combined process using sunlight, the reduction was 73% COD, 50% TOC, 97% phenols, 93% true color and 48% apparent color. With artificial light, the reduction was 94% COD, 63% TOC, 95% phenols, 98% true color and 65% apparent color. The evaluation of the acute toxicity against Daphnia magna indicated that after the proposed treatments, the effluent did not present toxicity or the toxicity was reduced. It is concluded that the combined process can be considered an efficient alternative for the treatment of textile effluent.

Formation of Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) biofilm accelerates microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). The aim of this study was to investigate both the corrosivity of a marine SRB consortium on carbon steel coupons and its mitigation in the presence of ZnO. Metagenomics analysis revealed that Halodesulfovibrio (78.9%) was predominant and could be related to MIC. The analysis also showed a remarkable shift from a highly corrosive SRB consortium in the control bioreactors to a far less corrosive consortium when ZnO was added to the bioreactors. Further results indicated that the corrosion rate of the SRB consortium was 8.17 mpy on the carbon steel coupons. In the ZnO-treated bioreactors, the count of SRB and MIC in the carbon steel coupons simultaneously reduced. Moreover, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy and profilometry analysis determined that ZnO could significantly decrease the amount of biofilm and the corrosion rate. Electrochemical experiments revealed higher corrosion current density (i corr ) and lower charge transfer resistance (R ct ) in the control bioreactors relative to the ZnO-treated bioreactors. We introduce Halodesulfovibrio as a potentially important corrosive genus in a marine SRB consortium. Sensor array methods have received much attention in recent years. In this study, a colorimetric sensor array consisting of three kinds of steel slag-based composites (including porphyrin-functionalized non-magnetic steel slag (NMSS-Por), alkali-excited steel slag (A-SS), and platinum modified steel slag (ALANH-Pt)) was developed for the detection and recognition of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) such as tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline (DOX). Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) showed that the colorimetric sensor array has excellent recognition ability for TCs. The detection limits of this sensor array for TC, OTC, and DOX were 0.059 μM, 0.111 μM and 0.118 μM, respectively, which provided higher sensitivity compared to the colorimetric sensors composed of a single steel slag-based composite material. At the same time, the array sensor has anti-interference ability, and this study provides a new application route for steel slag.

To characterize the source and effects of bacterial communities on corrosion of intertidal structures, three different UK coastal sites were sampled for corrosion materials, sediment and seawater. Chemical analyses indicate the activity of sulfate-reducing microbes (SRBs) at 2 sites (Shoreham and Newhaven), but not at the third (Southend-on-Sea). Microbial communities in the deep sediment and corrosion samples are similar. The phylum Proteobacteria is dominant (40.4% of the total ASV), followed by Campilobacterota (11.3%), Desulfobacterota and Firmicutes (4%-5%). At lower taxonomic levels, corrosion causing bacteria, such as Shewanella sp. (6%), Colwellia sp. (7%) and Mariprofundus sp. (1%), are present. At Southend-on-sea, the relative abundance of Campilobacterota is higher compared to the other two sites. The mechanism of action of microorganisms at Shoreham and Newhaven involves biogenic sulfuric acid corrosion of iron by the combined action of SRBs and sulfur-oxidizing microbes. However, at Southend-on-sea, sulfur compounds are not implicated in corrosion, but SRBs and other electroactive microbes may play a role in which cathodic reactions (electrical MIC) and microbial enzymes (chemical MIC) are involved. Anaerobic digestion for flexible biogas production can lead to digestion inhibition under high shock loads. While steel slag addition has shown promise in enhancing system buffering, its limitations necessitate innovation. This study synthesized the nitrogen-doped activated carbon composite from steel slag to mitigate intermediate product accumulation during flexible biogas production. Material characterization preceded experiments introducing the composite into anaerobic digestion systems, evaluating its impact on methane production efficiency under hydraulic and concentration sudden shocks. Mechanistic insights were derived from microbial community and metagenomic analyses, facilitating the construction of the modified Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) to quantitatively assess the material's effects. Results indicate superior resistance to concentration shocks with substantial increment of methane production rate up to 33.45% compared with control group, which is mediated by direct interspecies electron transfer, though diminishing with increasing shock intensity. Ladle slag, a by-product of steelmaking, presents a valuable strategy for waste reduction and valorization in wastewater treatment. This work demonstrates the successful simultaneous removal of Al(III), B(III), Ba(II), Cr(III), Mg(II), Sr(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II), from electroplating wastewater by ladle slag. First, Cr(III) and Pb(II) removals were evaluated in single synthetic systems by analyzing the influence of pH, temperature, and ladle slag dosage. Competitive removal was observed in binary batch experiments of Cr(III) - Pb(II), achieving 88% and 96% removal, respectively, with fast kinetics following a pseudo-second-order model. The findings of XRD, SEM, EDX, and FTIR of the slag after removal helped to elucidate the synergic removal mechanism involving ladle slag dissolution, precipitation, ion exchange, and adsorption in a tight relationship with the solution pH. Lastly, ladle slag was tested in real electroplating wastewater with the aforementioned ions at concentrations ranging from <1 to 1700 mg/L. The removal was performed in two steps, the first attained the following efficiencies: 73% for Al(III), 88% for B(III), 98% for Ba(II), 80% for Cr(III), 82% for Mg(II), 99% for Pb(II), 88% for Sr(II), and 88% for Zn(II). Visual MINTEQ simulation was utilized to identify the different species of ions present during the removal process. Furthermore, the leaching tests indicated a minimal environmental risk of secondary pollution in its application. The fluctuating water-line corrosion of EH40 steel in sterile and biotic media was investigated with a wire beam electrode. When the coupons were partially immersed in the sterile medium, the position of the low water-line acted as the cathodic zone and the area below the low water-line constantly served as the main anodic zone. The thin electrolyte layers with uneven thickness promoted the galvanic current of the region below the low water-line. In the present work, Verbena Officinalis (VO) leaf extract was used as potential corrosion inhibitor for the corrosion of carbon steel (CS) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 medium. Further, the corrosion inhibiting nature of VO leaf extract towards the CS was evaluated using mass loss (ML), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and surface morphological analyses using atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Calculation of activation energy E a ∗ using Arrhenius equation shows the increase in activation energy when adding the VO leaf extract in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 medium and the maximum activation energy ( E a ∗  = 49.9 kJ mol -1 ) was observed for 1000 mg L -1 VO leaf extract in acid medium. The negative free energy values suggested the spontaneous and the stability of the adsorbed layer of VO leaf extract on the CS surface. Using EIS measurements, high percent inhibitory effectiveness of 91.1% for 1000 ppm solutions was achieved. With an increase in VO leaf extract dose, the double layer capacitance (C dl ) values fall while the values of charge transfer (R ct ) increase. This showed that a protective layer of VO leaf extract on CS surface was formed. The polarization curves showed that the VO leaf extract acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. It is discovered that the adsorption of VO leaf extract molecules adhering to the CS surface followed the Langmuir isotherm. The corrosion behavior of carbon steel under the coexistence of carbon dioxide and SRB was studied by means of corrosion weight loss, SEM, EDS, in situ pH test, and other methods. The results showed that Chloride ions, temperature, pH, and oxygen coexist with iron bacteria will affect the corrosion under the coexistence of CO 2 and SRB, and SRB tends to grow in a favorable environment for itself, and the corrosion rate of X52N at 42 days is slightly higher than that at 21 days. However, the pitting depth increased sharply from 21.20 µm in 21 days to 39.79 µm in 42 days. So that the corrosion can be divided into two stages. First, SRB catalyze the dissolution of FeCO 3 , leading to local uniform corrosion. Second, SRB directly obtain electrons from the metal surface, resulting in local pitting. The present study focuses on an environmental approach based on the use of an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor from the Citrullus colocynthis fruit extract for enhancement corrosion resistance of carbon steel (C-S) in acid medium as an alternative to various organic and non-organic chemical inhibitors. The evaluation of the inhibition properties of the fruit methanolic extract of Citrullus colocynthis (CCE) were performed in molar hydrochloric acid (1 M HCl) medium using gravimetric and electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance) techniques as well as surface analyses. CCE is rich in amino acids, mainly citrulline and β-(pyrazo-1-yl)-L-analine molecules. Based on the weight loss evaluation, the results demonstrated that this plant extract acts as an effective corrosion inhibitor and a protection level of 93.6% was attained at 500 ppm of CCE after 6 h of metal exposure at 303 K. According to polarization curves, CCE functions as a mixed-type inhibitor. In addition, AC impedance analyses have shown that the incorporation of CCE into the corrosive solution leads to a decrease in load capacity, while improving the charge/discharge function at the interface. This suggests the possibility of the formation of an adsorbed layer on the C-S surface. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, contact angle measurements, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses supported the development of a protective film over CS substrate surface afterwards addition of CCE. Langmuir and/or Temkin isotherms can be used to characterize the adsorption of this organic inhibitor on the C-S surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has revealed that the inhibiting effect of CCE on the corrosion of C-S in 1 M HCl solution is mainly controlled by a chemisorption process and the inhibitive layer is composed of an iron oxide/hydroxide mixture where CCE molecules are incorporated. Heavy carbon industries produce solid side stream materials that contain inorganic chemicals like Ca, Na, or Mg, and other metals such as Fe or Al. These inorganic compounds usually react efficiently with CO 2 to form stable carbonates. Therefore, using these side streams instead of virgin chemicals to capture CO 2 is an appealing approach to reduce CO 2 emissions. Herein, we performed an experimental study of the mineral carbonation potential of three industrial steel slags via aqueous, direct carbonation. To this end, we studied the absorption capacities, reaction yields, and physicochemical characteristics of the carbonated samples. The absorption capacities and the reaction yields were analyzed through experiments carried out in a reactor specifically designed to work without external stirring. As for the physicochemical characterization, we used solid-state Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Using this reactor, the absorption capacities were between 5.8 and 35.3 g/L and reaction yields were in the range of 81-211 kg CO 2 /ton of slag. The physicochemical characterization of the solid products with solid FTIR, XRD and SEM indicated the presence of CaCO 3 . Most microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) studies focus on the threat of pinhole leaks caused by MIC pitting. However, microbes can also lead to structural failures. Tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS) biocide mitigated the microbial degradation of mechanical properties of X80 steel pipeline by Desulfovibrio ferrophilus (IS5 strain), a very corrosive sulfate reducing bacterium. It was found that 100 ppm (w/w) THPS added to the enriched artificial seawater (EASW) culture medium before incubation resulted in 2.8-log reduction in sessile cell count after a 7-d incubation at 28 °C under anaerobic conditions, leading to 94% uniform corrosion rate reduction (from 1.3 to 0.07 mm/a), and 84% pitting corrosion rate reduction (from 0.70 to 0.11 mm/a). The X80 dogbone coupon incubated with 100 ppm THPS for 7 d suffered 3% loss in ultimate tensile strain and 0% loss in ultimate tensile strength compared with the abiotic control in EASW. In comparison, the no-treatment X80 dogbone coupon suffered losses of 13% in ultimate tensile strain and 6% in ultimate tensile stress, demonstrating very good THPS efficacy., (© 2024. Steel mill wastewater sludge, as an iron-enriched solid waste, was expected to be converted into iron-enriched biochar with acceptable environmental risk by pyrolysis. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the chemical speciation transformation of heavy metals in biochar under various pyrolysis temperatures and its reutilization for tetracycline (TC) removal. The experimental data indicated that pyrolysis temperature was a key factor affecting the heavy metals speciation and bioavailability in biochar, and biochar with pyrolysis temperature at 450 °C was the most feasible for reutilization without potential risk. The endogenous iron-enriched biochar (FSB450) showed highly efficient adsorption towards TC, and its maximum adsorption capacity could reach 240.38 mg g -1 , which should be attributed to its excellent mesoporous structure, abundant functional groups and endogenous iron cycling. The endogenous iron was converted to a stable iron oxide crystalline phase (Fe 3 O 4 and MgFe 2 O 4 ) by pyrolysis, which underwent a valence transition to form a coordination complex with TC by electron shuttling in the FSB450 matrix. Microorganisms in the waterline zone can secrete pigments to avoid damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, some of which have corrosive effects. In this work, we found that the secretion of pyomelanin by P3 strain of Pseudoalteromonas lipolytica significantly increases under strong lighting conditions, accelerating the corrosion of the material. Molecular mechanisms indicate that strong light, as a stressful environmental factor, enhances the expression of melanin secretion-related genes to prevent bacteria from being damaged by ultraviolet radiation. Desiccation-induced cracks in a compacted clay liner significantly deteriorate the hydraulic barrier performance of landfill covers. The present study explores the effects of polypropylene (PP) fiber reinforcement on the hydrological response and crack resistance of compacted steel slag (SS; 90 wt%) - bentonite (10 wt%) mixtures under drying and wetting cycles. Comprehensive tests were conducted to explore the impact of different fiber lengths (6-12 mm) and contents (0-0.4 % wt.%), including hydraulic conductivity tests for measuring the saturated hydraulic conductivity (k s ), unconfined-penetration tests for measuring the tensile strength, small-sized plate tests for quantifying crack development, and large-sized bucket tests for studying the hydrological response and crack characteristics. Higher fiber contents and longer fiber lengths increased the k s -value of the specimens. For a 0.3 % fiber content, the tensile strength peaked for the 9-mm fiber. Consistently, the specimen reinforced with the 9-mm fibers exhibited significantly fewer cracks than those reinforced with the 6-mm and 12-mm fibers. It was because the 6-mm fibers had a shorter anchorage length, while the 12-mm fibers tended to agglomerate. The large-sized bucket tests showed that fiber reinforcement limited crack development significantly under wetting and drying cycles, reducing the rainfall infiltration by 40 % and enhancing the soil water retention capacity. Carbon steel microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) is known to occur via extracellular electron transfer (EET). A higher biofilm sessile cell count leads to more electrons being harvested for sulfate reduction by SRB in energy production. Metal surface roughness can impact the severity of MIC by SRB because of varied biofilm attachment. C1018 carbon steel coupons (1.2 cm 2 top working surface) polished to 36 grit (4.06 μm roughness which is relatively rough) and 600 grit (0.13 μm) were incubated in enriched artificial seawater inoculated with highly corrosive Desulfovibrio ferrophilus IS5 at 28 ℃ for 7 d and 30 d. It was found that after 7 d of SRB incubation, 36 grit coupons had a 11% higher sessile cell count at (2.0 ± 0.17) × 10 8  cells/cm 2 , 52% higher weight loss at 22.4 ± 5.9 mg/cm 2 (1.48 ± 0.39 mm/a uniform corrosion rate), and 18% higher maximum pit depth at 53 μm compared with 600 grit coupons. However, after 30 d, the differences diminished. Electrochemical tests with transient information supported the weight loss data trends. This study evaluated Aloe vera extract as a green inhibitor to prevent corrosion in seawater environments. A. vera extract was produced by maceration with methanol-water at room temperature. Electrochemical techniques were used to evaluate the corrosion inhibitor effectiveness of the A. vera extract. The morphology of the corrosion products was analyzed by FE-SEM equipped with EDS and AFM. FT-IR and LCMS characterized the functional and structural groups in this extract. The electrochemical measurements show that A. vera extract could effectively reduce the corrosion of API 5L steel in seawater environments. Inhibition efficiency (IE) increases with increasing concentration. Optimal corrosion inhibition efficiency of around 83.75% (PDP) and 88.60% (EIS) was obtained by adding 300 mg L -1 of extract at 310 K. Furthermore, the higher the concentration of A. vera extract, the greater the activation energy (E a ), with the highest activation energy being 48.24 kJ mol -1 for the concentration of 300 mg L -1 . Conversely, increasing the temperature and exposure duration reduces the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) values; the best exposure period was 30 min with 88.34% IE by a concentration of 300 mg L -1 at 300 K. This corrosion inhibition is achieved by the adsorption process of A. vera bioactive on metal surfaces with a mixed inhibitor through a physisorption-chemisorption mechanism. This finding was confirmed by the smoother surface morphology of the steel treated with A. vera extract than without. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the corrosion resistance in natural seawater (Năvodari area) of two types of low-alloy carbon steels BVDH36 and LRAH36 by electrochemical methods. The electrochemical methods used were the evolution of the free potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), polarization resistance (R p ) and corrosion rate (V corr ), potentiodynamic polarization (PD), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The studies were completed by ex situ characterization analyzes of the studied surfaces before and after corrosion such as: optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results of the study show us that the polarization resistance of the low-alloy carbon steel BVDH36 is higher compared to the polarization resistance of the low-alloy carbon steel LRAH36. It is also observed that with the increase in the immersion time of the samples in natural seawater, the polarization resistance of the BVDH36 alloy increases over time and finally decreases, and for the carbon steel LRAH36 the polarization resistance increases.

Partially encased concrete (PEC) has better mechanical properties as a structure where steel and concrete work together. Due to the increasing amount of construction waste, recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is being considered by more people. However, although RAC has more points, the performance is inferior to natural aggregate concrete (NAC). To narrow or address this gap, lightweight, high-strength and corrosion-resistant CFRP can be used, also protecting the steel flange of the PEC structure. Therefore, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) confined partially encased recycled coarse aggregate concrete columns were studied in this paper. With respect to different slenderness ratios, recycled coarse aggregate(RCA) replacement ratios, and number of CFRP layers, the performance of the proposed CFRP restrained columns are reported. The RCA replacement ratio is analyzed to be limited negative impact on the bearing capacity, generally within 6%. As for the slenderness ratio, the bearing capacity increased with it. However, wrapping CFRP significantly increased the bearing capacity. Considering the arch factor, a simple formula for calculating the ultimate strength of CFRP-confined partially encased RAC columns is developed based on EC4 and GB50017-2017. This study explores the impacts of neem oil biodiesel (BD), which was produced and characterized using GC-MS, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques to elucidate pure and corrosion-product neem oil BD at room temperature (25 °C) and different immersion durations of 0, 28, 42, and 56 days. The OM and SEM were also employed to study the surface, structural integrity, and interphase interaction between the BD and the carbon steel (C1020) before and after immersion for different durations. The dominant fatty acid (FA) group in both pure and corrosion-product neem oil BD was C 18 , with a total composition of 72.3 %, hence determining the nature of the BD interaction with the carbon steel. The study revealed that carbon steel (C1020) was susceptible to attacks by neem oil BD, and the duration of immersion had substantial influence on the surface morphology and structural integrity of the steel. The microbiologically influenced corrosion inhibition (MICI) of Q235 carbon steel by Shewanella putrefaciens and mediated calcium deposition were investigated by regulating microbial mineralization. In a calcium-rich medium, S. putrefaciens rapidly created a protective calcium carbonate layer on the steel surface, which blocked Cl - diffusion. Without calcium, the biofilm and rust layer mitigated pitting corrosion but did not prevent Cl - penetration. Potentiodynamic polarization results indicated that the current densities (i corr values) of the corrosion produced in the S. putrefaciens-inoculated media with and without calcium were 0.4 μA/cm 2 and 0.6 μA/cm 2 , respectively. Similarly, compared with those under sterile conditions, the corrosion inhibition rates were 92.2% and 87.4% higher, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) confirmed that the MICI was caused by the combination of microbial aerobic respiration and the deposited layers. Owing to the effects of seawater erosion, dry/wet cycles, dissolved oxygen and microorganisms, the corrosion of steel in marine tidal environments is a serious threat to the safe and stable operation of marine equipment and facilities. Among them, microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of steel has received increasing attention. Cathodic protection (CP) is frequently used to control the corrosion of offshore steel structures. However, in the presence of microorganisms, implementation of CP and its specific effects remain controversial. In this study, the influence of Pseudomonas sp. on the CP efficiency of Zn sacrificial anodes (ZnSAs) during the tidal corrosion of X80 steel was studied. The results showed that CP efficiency exceeded 92% in an abiotic tidal environment. However, in the biotic tidal environment, Pseudomonas sp. significantly reduced the CP efficiency. MALDI-TOF MS identifications of microorganisms in a clinical laboratory were investigated, comparing steel targets with MBT Biotargets. Natural gums due to availability, multifunctionality, and nontoxicity are multifaceted in application. In corrosion inhibition applications, their performance, in unmodified form is unsatisfactory because of high hydration rate, solubility issues, algal and microbial contamination, as well as thermal instability. This work attempts to enhance the inhibitive performance of Berlinia grandiflora (BEG) and cashew (CEG) exudate gums through various modification approaches. The potential of biogenic BEG and CEG gums-silver (Ag) nanocomposites (NCPs) for corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 M HCl is studied. The nanocomposites were characterized using the FTIR, UV-vis, and TEM techniques. The corrosion studies through the gravimetric and electrochemical (PDP, EIS, LPR, and EFM) analyses reveal moderate inhibition performance by the nanocomposites. Furthermore, the PDP results reveal that both inhibitors are mixed-type with maximum corrosion inhibition efficiencies (IEs) of 61.2 % and 54.2 % for BEG-Ag NCP and CEG-Ag NCP, respectively at an optimum concentration of 1.0 %. Modification of these inhibitors with iodide ion (KI) significantly increased the IE values to 90.1 % and 88.5 % for BEG-Ag NCP and CEG-Ag NCP at the same concentration. The issue of material failure attributed to microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is escalating in seriousness. Microorganisms not only facilitate corrosion but certain beneficial microorganisms also impede its occurrence. This study explored the impact of marine B. velezensis on the corrosion behavior of X65 steel in simulated offshore oilfield produced water. B. velezensis exhibited rapid growth in the initial stages, and the organic acid metabolites were found to promote corrosion. Subsequently, there was an increase in cross-linked "networked" biofilms products, a significant rise in the prismatic shape of corrosion products, and a tendency for continuous development in the middle and late stages. The organic/inorganic mineralized film layer formed on the surface remained consistently complete. Metabolic products of amino acid corrosion inhibitors were also observed to be adsorbed into the film. B. velezensis altered the kinetics of the X65 steel cathodic reaction, resulting in a deceleration of the electrochemical reaction rate. Lifting-correction is a technique to restore buildings experiencing uneven settlement, while ensuring the safety and integrity of the main structural system. This study was based on a real light-steel building structure and provided a detailed description of scenarios involving uneven settlement and the process of lifting and correction. Additionally, a sophisticated finite element (FE) model was established using the generic FE software ABAQUS, with refined material constitutive models to ensure the accuracy of simulation results. Firstly, the impact of uneven settlement on the structure was examined, including modal and stress field analyses. Different methods of breaking column (BC) and lifting column (LC) were compared and scrutinized to identify optimal approaches and minimize damage and disturbance to the building. Four methods have been proposed and compared, including simultaneously breaking columns, breaking columns with chessboard style, simultaneously lifting columns and lifting columns in multiple stages. The four methods were comprehensively evaluated from the perspectives of stress fields, displacement responses, damage and energy dissipation. The results indicated that after uneven settlement, the eigenvalues and frequencies of the structure decrease, the structure tended to be unstable. Simultaneously, as stress increases, some joints' materials enter the yielding stage, affecting the overall structural stability and safety. When damage occurs in some joints, the structural safety was compromised. The comparison between the two BC methods, including the chessboard style and simultaneously BC methods, it was revealed that the former causes less disturbance to structural initial stress field. The comparison between the two LC methods, including, simultaneously and LC in multiple stages, it was revealed that the latter performs slightly better in terms of stress fields, displacement fields, damage, energy dissipation and internal forces. Therefore, the methods of BC in chessboard style and LC in multiple stages were recommended to use in engineering practice to ensure less structural disturbance. As a by-product of the steelmaking industry, the large-volume production and accumulation of steel converter slag cause environmental issues such as land occupation and dust pollution. Since metal salts of unsaturated carboxylic acid can be used to reinforce rubber, this study explores the innovative application of in-situ modified steel slag, mainly comprising metal oxides, with methacrylic acid (MAA) as a rubber filler partially replacing carbon black. By etching the surface of steel slag particles with MAA, their surface roughness was increased, and the chemical bonding of metal methacrylate salt was introduced to enhance their interaction with the molecular chain of natural rubber (NR). The results showed that using the steel slag filler effectively shortened the vulcanization molding cycle of NR composites. The MAA in-situ modification effectively improved the interaction between steel slag and NR molecular chains. Meanwhile, the physical and mechanical properties, fatigue properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of the experimental group with MAA in-situ modified steel slag (MAA-in-situ-m-SS) were significantly enhanced compared with those of NR composites partially filled with unmodified slag. With the dosage of 7.5 phr or 10 phr, the above properties matched or even exceeded those of NR composites purely filled with carbon black. More importantly, partially replacing carbon black with modified steel slag reduced fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission from carbon black production. Electroless nickel plating is a suitable technology for the hydrogen industry because electroless nickel can be mass-produced at a low cost. Investigating in a complex environment where hydrogen permeation and friction/wear work simultaneously is necessary to apply it to hydrogen valves for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. In this research, the effects of hydrogen permeation on the mechanical characteristics of electroless nickel-plated free-cutting steel (SUM 24L) were investigated. Due to the inherent characteristics of electroless nickel plating, the damage (cracks and delamination of grain) and micro-particles by hydrogen permeation were clearly observed at the grain boundaries and triple junctions. In particular, the cracks grew from grain boundary toward the intergranualr. This is because the grain boundaries and triple junctions are hydrogen permeation pathways and increasing area of the hydrogen partial pressure. As a result, its surface roughness increased by a maximum of two times, and its hardness and adhesion strength decreased by hydrogen permeation. In particular, hydrogen permeation increased the friction coefficient of the electroless nickel-plated layer, and the damage caused by adhesive wear was significantly greater, increasing the wear depth by up to 5.7 times. This is believed to be due to the decreasing in wear resistance of the electroless nickel plating layer damaged by hydrogen permeation. Nevertheless, the Vickers hardness and the friction coefficient of the electroless nickel plating layer were improved by about 3 and 5.6 times, respectively, compared with those of the free-cutting steel. Steel cord materials were found to have internal porous microstructures and complex fluid flow properties. However, current studies have rarely reported the transport behavior of steel cord materials from a microscopic viewpoint. The computed tomography (CT) scanning technology and lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) were used in this study to reconstruct and compare the real three-dimensional (3D) pore structures and fluid flow in the original and tensile (by loading 800 N force) steel cord samples. The pore-scale LBM results showed that fluid velocities increased as displacement differential pressure increased in both the original and tensile steel cord samples, but with two different critical values of 3.3273 Pa and 2.6122 Pa, respectively. The original steel cord sample had higher maximal and average seepage velocities at the 1/2 sections of 3D construction images than the tensile steel cord sample. These phenomena should be attributed to the fact that when the original steel cord sample was stretched, its porosity decreased, pore radius increased, flow channel connectivity improved, and thus flow velocity increased. Moreover, when the internal porosity of tensile steel cord sample was increased by 1 time, lead the maximum velocity to increase by 1.52 times, and the average velocity was increased by 1.66 times. Furthermore, when the density range was determined to be 0-38, the pore phase showed the best consistency with the segmentation area. In this work, a total of 18 types of choline chloride, betaine, and L-proline-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized to determine the extraction yield of a natural polysaccharide (PSA) from Dysosma versipellis using an ultrasound-assisted extraction method. Results indicate that the choline-oxalic acid-based DES has the best extraction yield for PSA due to the proper physical-chemical properties between PSA and DES. To evaluate the optimal extraction conditions, a response surface methodology was carried out. Under the optimal conditions, the extraction yield of PSA reaches 10.37 % (± 0.03 %), higher than the conventional extraction methods. Findings from FT-IR and NMR suggest that the extracted PSA belongs to a neutral polysaccharide with (1 → 6)-linked α-d-glucopyranose in the main chain. Interestingly, results from various electrochemical measurements show the extracted PSA exhibits excellent corrosion inhibition performance for mild steel (MS) in a 0.5 M HCl solution, with 90.8 % of maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency at 210 mg L -1 . SEM and XPS measurements reveal the formation of a protective layer on the MS surface. The adsorption behaviour of extracted PSA well obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm containing the chemisorption and physisorption. The present research demonstrates an innovative investigation of environmentally friendly mild steel (M-steel) corrosion inhibition using the artemisia stems aqueous extract (ASAEx) as an inhibitor in hydrochloric acid 1 M. The standard extraction technique of hydrodistillation was used for producing the aqueous solutions of ASAEx. To assess the ratios of the chemical components, phytochemical screening was used to identify the stems of this plant. We used a variety of methods and techniques in our research on corrosion inhibition, including weight loss measures, surface analysis methods like XPS and SEM/EDS, electrochemical testing like PDP and EIS, as well as computational lead compound evaluation. Maximum inhibitory efficacy was achieved with 400 mg/L ASAEx in 1 M HCl at 303 K, i.e. 90%. The PDP investigation verified the mixed-kind inhibitor status of the ASAEx extract. To describe the surface of M-steel, fitting and synthetic data were used to identify a constant phase element (CPE). SEM surface analysis was also used to detect the ASAEx effect on the surface of M-steel. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis shows the presence of trace molecules of ASAEx on M-steel surface characterizing the bands in Maj-ASAEx (major compound of ASAEx). Electric-arc-furnace (EAF) steelmaking uses scrap iron and steel as raw materials. Scrap iron and steel originate from complex sources and may contain heavy metal components which can leach into the environment over time due to wear-and-tear. A by-product of the EAF steelmaking process is oxidizing slag, and approximately 1.2 million metric tons is produced every year in Taiwan alone. This study investigated substitution of natural aggregates with oxidizing slag in dense-graded asphalt concrete. We evaluated the water resistance and asphalt film thickness of the oxidizing slag substituted asphalt concrete and further explored the performance of oxidizing slag as paving material. We determined the dissolved and total amounts of heavy metals in the oxidizing slag, comparing these results with current regulatory controls to assess the environmental compatibility of the oxidizing slag. We found that due to the complicated sources of oxidizing slag, the basic properties should be analyzed on a batch-to-batch basis. Furthermore, we recommend trial mixing before upscaling the production of oxidizing slag substituted dense-graded asphalt concrete to confirm the mixing time required to achieve uniformity. The results also show that in comparison to natural aggregates used in asphalt concrete, oxidizing slag exhibits superior performance in terms of increased asphalt film thickness and improved water resistance. Furthermore, oxidizing slag as an aggregate material was associated with decreased heavy metal leaching and reduced environmental pollution. The results of the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) met regulatory requirements. However, the microwave-assisted aqua-regia digestion procedure showed heavy metal concentrations exceeding the monitoring standards for food crops. Considering environmental compatibility, it is recommended that controlling the total amount of heavy metals in oxidizing slag should be included in regulatory requirements. Herein, a novel chitosan Schiff base (CS-FGA) as a sustainable corrosion inhibitor has been successfully synthesized via a simple amidation reaction by using an imidazolium zwitterion and chitosan (CS). The corrosion inhibition property of CS-FGA for mild steel (MS) in a 1.0 M HCl solution was studied by various electrochemical tests and physical characterization methods. The findings indicate that the maximum inhibition efficiency of CS-FGA as a mixed-type inhibitor for MS in 1.0 M HCl solution with 400 mg L -1 reaches 97.6 %, much much higher than the CS and the recently reported chitosan-based inhibitors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and water contact angle (WCA) results reveal that the CS-FGA molecules firmly adsorb on the MS surface to form a protective layer. The adsorption of CS-FGA on the MS surface belongs to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm containing both the physisorption and chemisorption. According to the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis spectrum, FeN bonds presented on the MS surface further prove the chemisorption between CS-FGA and Fe to generate the stable protective layer. Two green inhibitors extracted from an endemic species (Origanum grosii (Og)) using two solvents of different polarity (water and ethanol), OgW (aqueous extract) and OgE (ethanolic extract), were used for the anticorrosion of mild steel (M steel) in a 1 M HCl medium. Anticorrosive performance of OgW and OgE was assessed using standard electrochemical techniques, EIS/PDP measurements, weight loss method and SEM/EDX surface analysis. The results show that OgW achieves a maximum inhibition efficiency of 92 % and that the extract in aqueous medium (more polar) is more efficient than the extract in ethanolic medium (less polar). Both extracts act as mixed inhibitors and their corrosion process is predominantly governed by a charge transfer. Concentration and temperature effect was studied and shown that they are two antagonistic parameters for the evolution of inhibitory effectiveness of both OgW and OgE. The adsorption isotherms of the two inhibitors OgE and OgW obey to the Langmuir adsorption model. Moreover, the examination of SEM images and EDX spectra support a deposit of both extracts on the metal surface by an adsorption phenomenon. Removal of dissolved zinc (Zn) from water by a novel alkali-activated material (AAM) prepared from steel industry slags in a fixed-bed column was investigated. Design of experiments was used to find the optimum operation parameters [flow rate ( Q ) , adsorbent mass, ( m ads ), and initial Zn concentration ( C 0 )] for the removal of Zn 2+ from a ZnCl 2 solution. Regression models for the breakthrough ( q b ), and saturation ( q sat ) capacities of the bed and three other response parameters as functions of Q , m ads and C 0 were fitted with coefficients of determination ( R 2 ) ranging from 0.48 to 0.99. Experimental values of q b and q sat varied within 1.42-7.03 mg Zn/g and 10.57-17.25 mg Zn/g, respectively. The optimum operation parameters were determined to be Q = 1.64 ml/min and m ads = 4.5 g, whereas C 0 had negligible effect on the response parameters in the range 73-107 mg Zn/l. Finally, three empirical breakthrough curve (BTC) models were employed to describe the individual BTCs of which the modified dose - response model was found to give the best fit (0.960 ≤ R 2 ≤ 0.998). The results of the present work demonstrate that the novel AAM has considerable potential to be utilized in water purification applications.

This first study investigated the presence of dioxins and furans in river sediments around a craft village in Vietnam, focusing on Secondary Steel Recycling. Sediment samples were collected from various locations along the riverbed near the Da Hoi Secondary Steel Recycling village in Bac Ninh province. The analysis was conducted using a HRGC/HRMS-DFS device, detecting a total of 17 dioxin/furan isomers in all samples, with an average total concentration of 288.86 ng/kg d.w. The concentrations of dioxin/furan congeners showed minimal variation among sediment samples, ranging from 253.9 to 344.2 ng/kg d.w. The predominant compounds in the dioxin group were OCDD, while in the furan group, they were 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF and OCDF. The chlorine content in the molecule appeared to be closely related to the concentration of dioxins and their percentage distribution. However, the levels of furan isomers did not vary significantly. The distribution of these compounds was not dependent on the flow direction, as they were mainly found in solid waste and are not water-soluble. Although the hepta and octa congeners had high concentrations, when converted to TEQ values, the tetra and penta groups (for dioxins) and the penta and hexa groups (for furans) contributed more to toxicity. Furthermore, the source of dioxins in sediments at Da Hoi does not only originate from steel recycling production activities but also from other combustion sites. The average total toxicity was 10.92 ng TEQ/kg d.w, ranging from 4.99 to 17.88 ng TEQ/kg d.w, which did not exceed the threshold specified in QCVN 43:2017/BTNMT, the National Technical Regulation on Sediment Quality. Nonetheless, these levels are still concerning. The presence of these toxic substances not only impacts aquatic organisms in the sampled water environment but also poses potential health risks to residents living nearby.

A mechanical device inspired by the pistol shrimp snapper claw was developed. This technology features a claw characterized by a periodic opening/closing motion, at a controlled frequency, capable of producing oscillating flows at transitional Reynolds numbers. An innovative method was also proposed for determining the corrosion rate of carbon steel samples under oscillating acidic streams (aqueous solution of HCl). By employing very-thin carbon steel specimens (25 μm thickness), with one side coated with Zn and not exposed to the stream, it became possible to electrochemically sense the Zn surface once the steel sample was perforated, thus providing the average dissolution rate into the most relevant pit on the steel surface. Furthermore, a laser light positioned beneath the metallic sample, along with a camera programmed to periodically capture images of the steel surface, facilitated the accurate counting of the number of newly formed pits. The system consisting of the thin steel sample and the Zn coating can be seen as a type of corrosion sensor. Furthermore, the proposed laser illumination method allows corroborating the electrochemical detection of pits and also establishing their location. Two novel chitosan derivatives (water soluble and acid soluble) modified with thiocarbohydrazide were produced by a quick and easy technique using formaldehyde as links. The novel compounds were synthesized and then characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Their surface morphologies were examined using scanning electron microscopy. These chitosan derivatives could produce pH-dependent gels. The behavior of mild steel in 5 % acetic acid, including both inhibitors at various concentrations, was investigated using gravimetric and electrochemical experiments. According to the early findings, both compounds (TCFACN and TCFWCN) functioned as mixed-type metal corrosion inhibitors. Both inhibitors showed their best corrosion inhibition efficiency at 80 mg L -1 . TCFACN and TCFWCN, showed approximately 92 % and 94 % corrosion inhibition, respectively, at an optimal concentration of 80 mg L -1 , according to electrochemical analysis. In the corrosion test, the water contact angle of the polished MS sample at 87.90 °C was reduced to 51 °C. The water contact angles for MS inhibited by TCFACN and TCFWCN in the same electrolyte were greater, measuring 78.10 °C and 93.10 °C, respectively. This study aims to explore the prevention of chitosan modified with a fused heterocyclic compound as a sustainable corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1 M HCl. Electrochemical instruments, including potentiodynamic polarization techniques, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were employed to evaluate the corrosion protection performance. The outcomes showed that the chitosan modified with a fused heterocyclic compound has outstanding inhibition performance, with an inhibition effectiveness of 98.25 % at 100 ppm. The anti-corrosion features of modified chitosan were ascribed to the presence of hetero atoms in modified chitosan composite which leads to the creation of a protective layer, The modified chitosan composite behaved as mixed-typed inhibitors, as shown by the PDP results. The modified chitosan composite adsorbs on mild steel in the investigated corrosive media via chemisorption interactions, and its adsorption followed the Langmuir adsorption model. The pumpkin leaf was extracted by the decoction method, and it was used as an eco-friendly, nontoxic inhibitor of copper in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 corrosion media. To evaluate the composition and protective capacity of the pumpkin leaf extract, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical testing, XPS, AFM, and SEM were employed. The results showed that the pumpkin leaf extract (PLE) is an effective cathode corrosion inhibitor, exhibiting exceptional protection for copper within a specific temperature range. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the PLE against copper reached 89.98% when the concentration of the PLE reached 800 mg/L. Furthermore, when the temperature and soaking time increased, the corrosion protection efficiency of 800 mg/L PLE on copper consistently remained above 85%. Analysis of the morphology also indicated that the PLE possesses equally effective protection for copper at different temperatures. Furthermore, XPS analysis reveals that the PLE molecules are indeed adsorbed to form an adsorption film, which is consistent with Langmuir monolayer adsorption. Molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations were conducted on the main components of the PLE.

CO 2 mineral sequestration using alkaline solid waste (ASW) is a promising strategy for synergistically reducing CO 2 emissions and reusing industrial waste. However, improvement the carbonation degree still remains challenges due to the sluggish leaching rate of Ca/Mg ion at low pH. To the issues, this study proposed an amine-mediated CO 2 absorption and mineralization process with six common ASWs, as well an ecological utilization route of CO 2 -ASW productions. Experimental results indicated that calcium carbide slag (CS) had greater CO 2 mineralization capacity (86.2 g-CO 2 /kg-CS) than other ASWs, while stirring rate and particle size played a more important role during CO 2 capture. Amine-mediated CO 2 capture was verified to be more excellent with steel slag (SS) as mineral medium. When the MEA concentration was increased to 2 mol/L, the extraction efficiency of Ca 2+ was increased by 35 %, leaded to the CO 2 removal efficiency significantly promoted from 49 % to 92 %. The characterization of structural morphology referred spherical aragonite or needle-bar calcite was dominant for the porous mineralization products (30.6 m 2 /g). High germination index of pea seed (112.1 % at a dose of 10 g/L) inferred the negligible toxicological effects of tiny MEA residue over SS mineralization products, after centrifugally washing treatment. Pea seeds cultivated with mineralized products after centrifugal washing can achieve a growth rate of about 4 mm/d. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used to treat wastewater, while innovative studies are needed to support resource conservation, enhance multi-functionality, and improve the effectiveness of effluent usage. This study assessed the potential of CW's multiple functions by combining low-rank coal (lignite) and industrial waste (steel slag) in different configurations as CW substrates. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and metagenomic sequencing showed that the experimental treatment with lignite and steel slag mixtures had the highest multi-functionality, including efficient nutrient removal and carbon sequestration, as well as hydroponic crop production. Lignite and steel slag were mixed to form lignite-steel slag particle clusters, where Ca 2+ dissolved on the surface of steel slag was combined with PO 4 3- in wastewater to form Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 precipitation for phosphorus removal. A biofilm grew on the surface of lignite in this cluster, and OH - released from steel slag promoted lignite to release fulvic acid, which provided a carbon source for heterotrophic microorganisms and promoted denitrification. Moreover, fulvic acid enhanced carbon sequestration in CWs by increasing the biomass of Phragmites australis. The effluent from lignite-steel slag CW increased cherry tomato yield and quality while saving N and P applications. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different proportions (0%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%) of steel slag (SS) on humification and bacterial community characteristics during phosphate-amended composting of municipal sludge. Compared with adding KH 2 PO 4 alone, co-adding SS significantly promoted the temperature, pH, nitrification, and critical enzyme activities (polyphenol oxidase, cellulase, laccase); especially organic matter (OM) degradation rate (25.5%) and humification degree (1.8) were highest in the 5%-SS treatment. Excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor confirmed that co-adding SS could promote the conversion of protein-like substances or microbial by-products into humic-like substances. Furthermore, adding 5%-SS significantly improved the relative abundances of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and the genes related to carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, and enhanced the interactions of bacterial community in stability and complexity. The partial least squares path model indicated that OM was the primary factor affecting humification. In this study, sulfur dots (GA-SDs) synthesized by using Gum Arabic (GA) as a green stabilizer were used as corrosion inhibitors and their inhibition effect for Q235 steel in 3.5- wt% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, electrochemical tests, and surface and interface analysis. The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency reached the maximum value of 96.5% at 250 mg/L and the water-soluble GA-SDs were able to adhere to the iron surface through the diffusion and agglomeration effect. The unique antibacterial activities demonstrated a 99.35% inhibition efficiency at 250 mg/L. Moreover, the optical properties endowed the inhibitors with the fluorescence tracing function, which is an effective approach to detecting the residual quantity of water treatment agents. A novel Schiff base [4-(morpholin-4-yl) benzylidenyl]thiosemicarbazide (MBT) was created by reaction condensation. The molecules of the products were verified by IR, 1 HNMR, MS, and elemental techniques. The synergistic effect of KI with novel MBT on 304 stainless steel (SS) in acidic has been investigated experimentally and theoretically using DFT. The findings demonstrate that restriction efficacy on 304 SS improved with rising inhibitor concentrations, and this benefit was attributed to synergy when KI was injected. From EIS results, IE % increased with a higher concentration of MBT only and MBT + KI (from 100 to 600 ppm). MBT maximum IE % was 84.98%, at 600 ppm. MBT + KI, due to the I - ions synergistic effect, showed an IE% of about 95.48%, at 600 ppm. The adsorptions of MBT and MBT + KI on the surfaces of 304 SS are strongly fitted Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters (K ads , ΔG 0 ads ) were utilized. According to polarization findings, MBT behaves as a mixed-category antagonist. The Schiff base MBT was screened for its in vitro antimicrobial activities against some strains of bacteria and fungi. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is one of the reasons leading to the service failure of pipelines buried in the soil. In this work, the effect of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on the corrosion behavior of Q235 carbon steel in groundwater was investigated by electrochemical methods, surface analysis, and biological analysis. The results show that SRB utilizes iron as electron donor to sustain the vital activities of organic carbon-starved groundwater during the 14-day experimental period. The microbial community composition analysis at the genus level demonstrate that the diversity and richness decrease after corrosion, and the dominant SRB species has changed from Desulfovibrio to Desulfosporosinus. Moreover, the impedance of the carbon steel in the presence of biofilm was 1 order of magnitude higher than that of other periods in the electrochemical test, indicating that the biofilm and formed ferrous sulfide layer impeded the occurrence of corrosion. Although the 3D topography indicated that the surface of carbon steel was more uneven and pits were increased in the presence of SRB, the average weight loss (0.0396 ± 0.0050 g) was much higher than that without SRB (0.0139 ± 0.0007 g). The corrosion of carbon steel infrastructure in acidic environments poses significant economic and safety challenges. Traditional inhibitors such as chromates are being phased out due to toxicity concerns. Thus, there is a need to develop effective and sustainable green alternatives. In this work, we evaluated an epoxy-based inhibitor, bisphenol A tetrabromo dipropoxy dianiline tetraglycidyl ether (TGEDADPTBBA), for protecting carbon steel against corrosion in 1 M hydrochloric acid. An integrated experiment-computation approach was employed. Polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to assess the inhibition efficiency and mechanism of TGEDADPTBBA. Quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations provided atomic-level insights into adsorption behavior. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy characterized the surface morphology. The results showed that TGEDADPTBBA acted as a highly effective mixed-type inhibitor, achieving over 95% inhibition efficiency at a 10 -3  M concentration. It suppressed corrosion currents while increasing the charge transfer resistance. Theoretical studies revealed that TGEDADPTBBA adsorbed onto steel surfaces via both electrostatic and van der Waals interactions. This stable adsorption facilitated the formation of a protective barrier layer, as observed experimentally. Notably, our work demonstrated the synergistic potential of combining experimental corrosion testing with computational modeling to develop structure-property relationships for innovative inhibitor design. The simultaneous nitrate (NO 3 - -N) and phosphorus (P) removal systems are considered to be an effective wastewater treatment technology. However, so far, there are few studies on system optimization to improve NO 3 - -N and P removal. In this study, nine simultaneous NO 3 - -N and P removal biofilters (SNPBs) were constructed to treat simulated wastewater. In order to optimize the NO 3 - -N and P removal, different material loading positions were set: (1) red soil, steel slag, and rice straw (RSR), (2) steel slag, red soil, and rice straw (SRR), and (3) red soil, rice straw, and steel slag (RRS). Results showed that the above three treatments had mean removal efficiencies of 58%-91% for NO 3 - -N and 55%-81% for TP, with the best N and P removal occurring in the SRR. The TN mass balance indicated that microbial removal was responsible for 78.2% of the influent TN in the SRR biofilter. The key microorganisms were Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Diaphorobacter, and unclassified&#95;f&#95;Enterobacteriaceae, which accounted for 61.9% of the total microorganisms. The main P-removal mechanism was the formation of Al-P, Fe-P, and Ca-P in red soil or steel slag layer. In addition, the decrease of SRR effluent pH from 11.86 in 1-7 days to 7.75 in 8-50 days indicated that red soil and rice straw had a synergistic effect on water pH reduction.
