Using the Eastern Academic Scholars' Trust (EAST) shared print program as the focus, the authors, both of whom are members of the EAST Program Team, discuss the changes that EAST has experienced in the last few years. This includes significant growth of the membership of EAST, particularly with the addition of large library consortia; advances in the software tools that support shared print; the broadening and deepening of collaboration across shared print programs; and the opportunities that exist for further research in support of preserving and providing access to the print scholarly and cultural record. This report traces the evolution of shared print from localized projects and programs to national and North American networks; in particular, highlighting the formation of federations of previously established shared print programs. The authors also describe recent efforts to transcend the historical boundaries of shared print by embedding it more completely in library services and systems. The Eastern Academic Scholars' Trust (EAST), a regional shared print collaboration of sixty academic and research libraries, conducted validation studies of the collective monograph collection in 2016 and 2017. The author of this brief forum article argues that it is time to encourage faculty members to rethink student learning: encourage the scholarship of teaching and expose faculty to key research articles about student learning. Then, building on this knowledge, the academy needs to offer assistance to faculty in designing student-centered active-learning activities in order to prepare students better for the classroom, to engage with classroom activities better, and to further student learning beyond the classroom. The author states that we need to flip education on its head, move from this current instructor-centered teaching model to a student-responsible learning model, and empower students so they take pride in learning--potentially a pride that fosters lifetime learning. This article introduces the Partnership for Shared Book Collections, a federation of monograph shared print programs. Collaboration of programs at the network level allows for: Reducing the cost of retaining the scholarly record through shared distribution of commitments; De-duplicating efforts; Developing and promoting evidence-based best practices; Increasing the effectiveness of communication with end-users and funders; Tackling large-scale projects and research that are out of reach for individual shared print programs. Sometimes we question whether students are incapable or capable and/or willing or unwilling in regards to their academics. This study determined where students lie in regards to these concepts and showed one example of motivating students to do their best via course design, in this particular case by the use of a writing process model.

The Eastern Academic Scholars' Trust (EAST) is a shared print initiative involving 48 libraries across the Northeast. Initiated in 2012 with a planning grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, EAST addresses directly the growing need for academic libraries to ensure that monographs and journals of scholarly value are not inadvertently discarded as they undertake weeding and deselection programs to free up space for other library services. EAST is currently completing a large-scale analysis of collections across 40 of the participating libraries. This analysis will provide insight into both uniqueness and overlap across the libraries' holdings and will result in agreements by the libraries to retain circulating monographs in their local collections for an agreed upon time period and to make those materials available to researchers and scholars from other EAST libraries. In parallel to this collection analysis, EAST is implementing validation sampling across the libraries to better understand volume availability and condition and the role they may plan in retention decisions. The project team has developed an innovative sampling methodology and tools to support the study.
