ABSTRACT: Greater longevity is associated with lower replacement costs, higher average milk production, and fewer replacement heifers needed. Longevity data are obtained late in life, and for this reason stayability, defined as the probability of survival from birth until a certain age, can be used as an alternative measure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different type traits, inbreeding, and production level on the stayability of Jersey cows to various ages, and to assess trends over time. Data consisted of 460,172 to 204,658 stayability records, depending on length of the opportunity period, for survival from birth until 36, 48, 60, 72, or 84 mo of age. Threshold models were used to analyze the stayability traits, including different type traits, inbreeding coefficient, and within-herd production level as explanatory variables. Heritability estimates for stayability traits ranged from 0.05 (36 mo) to 0.22 (84 mo). As expected, the probability of survival decreased as age increased. Highly productive cows were more likely to survive than their poor-producing contemporaries regardless of age and the type trait evaluated. Our data indicate that farmers' selection decisions tend to punish poor production at early ages and reward high production at later stages. Inbreeding negatively affected the probability of survival, especially when inbreeding coefficients exceeded 10%, and this impact was most noticeable at 48 mo of age or later. Some type traits, such as stature and foot angle, had little effect on the probability of survival. Other type traits, such as strength, dairy form, rump width, and rear legs, showed higher probability of survival at intermediate scores, whereas other type traits, such as fore udder attachment, rear udder height, udder depth, and final score, showed higher probability of survival at higher scores. Finally, our results indicate that the probability of survival has decreased in the last decade, probably due to a greater number of heifers available and, therefore, higher culling rates.

Ewe lifetime productivity has economic implications for producers because shorter lifetime productivity results in less profit. Productive years of ewes from extensive, range-based systems of the United States West are generally less than ewes from more temperate regions of the United States. Accordingly, ewes from range-based systems, especially those employing shed-lambing strategies, have been selected for increased litter size to offset decreased lifetime productivity. However, the relationship of the ewe’s birth litter size (ELSB) has not been considered a potential contributor to lifetime productivity. Longevity (number of productive years, n = 1 per population) and stayability (probability to survive to the next age; ages 2–7 years, n = 6 per population) were investigated to understand ELSB effects on productive life. Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee breeds were used in this study. Across-breed (n = 11 550) and within-breed (Columbia, n = 4 398; Polypay, n = 4 534; Rambouillet, n = 5 922; Targhee, n = 6 482) analyses were used. Depending on the population, records spanned from 1950 to 2008, where ewe’s birth year was included as a fixed effect in the animal model using restricted maximum likelihood estimation procedures. Fixed effects investigated included ELSB (single-, twin-, or triplet-born) and ewe breed (across-breed analyses only). Regardless of trait or population used, heritability ranged from 0.06 ± 0.02 to 0.34 ± 0.03, where stayability at younger ages had the highest estimates. The breed effect was significant in all across-breed analyses (0.0001 ≤ P ≤ 0.038; n = 7), where Polypay, a breed selected for accelerated lambing and increased fertility, averaged shorter productive life or had a lower probability of survival to the next age compared with other breeds (longevity: 0.009 ≤ P ≤ 0.223; stayability: 0.000 ≤ P ≤ 0.842). The ELSB was significant in 60% (n = 5) and 37% (n = 30) of longevity and stayability analyses, respectively. Except for Targhee, all analyses showed ewes born in smaller litter sizes were associated with longer productive lives or higher probability of surviving to the next age, particularly in across-breed analyses (e.g., longevity: single- vs twin-born ewes, P = 0.004; vs triplet-born ewes, P = 0.003). This study provides evidence that increasing prolificacy in ewes from extensive, range-based production systems may impact productive life. Due to the low heritability of these traits, additional investigation into modeling these traits with dominance effects and litter size needs to be conducted.

The decision of premature culling cows directly impacts the profitability of dairy farms. A comprehensive characterization of the primary causes of culling reasons would greatly improve both management and selection objectives in dairy cattle breeding programs. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the temporal frequencies of 34 culling reasons in Canadian Holstein cows. After data editing and quality control, records from 3,096,872 cows culled from 9,683 herds spread across Canada were used for the analyses covering the periods from 1996 to 2020. Reproductive issues were the main culling reason accounting for 23.02%, followed by milk production (20.82%), health (20.39%), conformation problems (13.69%), economic factors (13.10%), accidents (5.67%), age-related causes (1.67%), and workability (1.63%). Nearly fifty-eight percent of cows were culled after 47 months of age. The observed frequencies of culling due to economic factors were lower than expected from 1996 to 2014 and higher than expected between 2015 and 2020. Reproduction issues had the highest culling frequencies during fall (24.54%), winter (24.02%), and spring (22.51%), while health issues were the most frequent (22.51%) culling reason in the summer season. Health issues (25.50%) and milk production (27.71%) were the most frequent culling reasons in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, respectively. Reproductive issues showed the highest frequency across climates based on the Köppen climate classification, except for Csb (Dry-summer subtropical or Mediterranean climate) and Bsk (Middle latitude steppe climate), which correspond to small regions in Canada, where production was the most frequent culling reason (29.42% and 21.56%, respectively). Reproductive and milk performance issues were the two main culling reasons in most ecozones, except in Boreal Shield and Atlantic Marine, where health issues had the highest frequencies (25.12 and 23.75%, respectively). Variation in the genome region coding for PLAG1 has well-documented associations with skeletal growth and age at puberty in cattle. However, the influence of PLAG1 on other economically important traits such as cow stayability has not yet been explored. Here we investigate the effect of PLAG1 variation on early and later in life female fertility, as well as size and growth, in a well-phenotyped Australian Brahman herd. Yearly pregnancy and productivity records were collected from 2,839 genotyped Brahman cows and used to generate fertility, growth, and weight phenotypes. A variant on chromosome 14 in PLAG1 (NC_037341.1:g.23338890G>T, rs109815800) was previously determined to be a putative causative mutation associated with variation in cattle stature. The imputed PLAG1 genotype at this variant was isolated for each animal and the effect of PLAG1 genotype on each trait was estimated using linear modeling. Regardless of how heifer fertility was measured, there was a significant (P < 0.05) and desirable relationship between the additive effects of PLAG1 genotype and successful heifer fertility. Heifers with two copies of the alternate allele (TT) conceived earlier and had higher pregnancy and calving rates. However, the effects of PLAG1 genotype on fertility began to diminish as cows aged and did not significantly influence stayability at later ages. While there was no effect of genotype on growth, PLAG1 had a negative effect on mature cow weight (P < 0.01), where females with two copies of the alternate allele (TT) were significantly smaller than those with either one or none. Selection emphasis on improved Brahman heifer fertility will likely increase the frequency of the T allele of rs109815800, which may also increase herd profitability and long-term sustainability through improved reproductive efficiency and reduced mature cow size. Context: Length of productive life is defined as the number of days from first calving to the last day of milking records, when the cow is no longer sufficiently productive. Although it has economic implications, length of productive life has not yet been included in Brazilian dairy cattle breeding programs because it depends on other traits such as age at first calving, milk production level and disease occurrence. In addition, its evaluation occurs later in life, and heritability coefficients are low. Aims: The aim of this study was to identify the effects of both age at first calving and accumulated 305-day milk yield in the first lactation on length of productive life in Holstein cows. Methods: Official dairy control data of 31 562 Holstein cows, calved from 2010 to 2014, in 321 herds from Paraná state, Brazil, were analysed by using the Kaplan–Meier estimator and Cox regression model. Key results: First calving at <21 months was associated with shortest productive life (1197.01 ± 232.40 days), whereas first calving at 24 months was associated with the lowest hazard ratio (0.572), suggesting that this is the most suitable age of first calving for a longer productive life. Low-yielding cows (first lactation yield <6392 kg) had the second lowest survival probability (47.20%), the shortest productive life (1150.60 ± 234.51 days) and the highest voluntary hazard ratio (1.30) and were prematurely culled from the herds. High-yielding cows (first lactation yield >12 024 kg) had lower culling risk at the first lactation. Conclusions: Cows that started their reproductive life ∼16 months of age (first calving at 24 months) had the longest productive life and an average first lactation milk yield ∼9000 kg. Implications: Reproductive management practices could affect length of productive life through effects on age at first calving and first lactation milk yield. Most of the Holstein semen used in Brazil comes from countries where longevity has already been included in selection indexes; thus, early identification of cow longevity could be used for culling decisions. Having long-lived, more profitable and more functional cows in the herd is one of the biggest challenges in dairy farming in Brazil. Objective Sow longevity is important for efficient and profitable pig farming. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in social genetic effect (SGE) of pigs on stress-tolerance and behavior. The present study aimed to estimate genetic correlations among average daily gain (ADG), stayability (STAY), and number of piglets born alive at the first parity (NBA1) in Korean Yorkshire pigs, using a model including SGE. Methods The phenotypic records of ADG and reproductive traits of 33,120 and 11,654 pigs, respectively, were evaluated. The variances and (co) variances of the studied traits were estimated by a multi-trait animal model applying the Bayesian with linear-threshold models using Gibbs sampling. Results The direct and SGEs on ADG had a significantly negative (−0.30) and neutral (0.04) genetic relationship with STAY, respectively. In addition, the genetic correlation between the social effects on ADG and NBA1 tended to be positive (0.27), unlike the direct effects (−0.04). The genetic correlation of the total effect on ADG with that of STAY was negative (−0.23) but non-significant, owing to the social effect. Conclusion These results suggested that total genetic effect on growth in the SGE model might reduce the negative effect on sow longevity because of the growth potential of pigs. We recommend including social effects as selection criteria in breeding programs to obtain satisfactory genetic changes in both growth and longevity.

Taking into account functional traits in the breeding practice should lead to a longer productive life of cows. However, despite the increased contribution of these traits in bull selection indices, their daughters are frequently culled as early as the 2nd or 3rd lactation. The problem is whether and to what extent the genetic potential of animals is realized in the production practice. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the associations between the breeding value (BV) of bulls and their daughters for cow longevity and culling reasons in the Holstein-Friesian cattle population in Poland. Data for 532 062 cows culled in 2012, 2015, and 2018 were analyzed. A majority of 5 045 cow sires originated from Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the United States. The highest variation in the contribution of culling reasons was for the cows culled at the age of 2–4 years. The contribution of the culling reasons, analyzed in relation to the cow culling age, remained similar and the only exception was culling because of old age, for which a significant increase was observed only for the culling age of at least 9 years (13.8%), which was reached by only 7.3% of the cows. The sires were characterized by generally high BV for conformation and reproductive traits. However, they had, at most, the average genetic potential for functional longevity. There were a number of beneficial associations found between the BV of bulls and the distribution of culling reasons in their daughters. For example, it concerns relations between the somatic cell score in milk and culling due to udder diseases and low milk yield, between the interval from calving to first insemination and low milk yield, between the protein yield and old age, or between the BV for certain conformation traits (size, udder) and cow culling due to age. In these cases, as the BV increased for a given trait, the contribution of the corresponding cow culling reason tended to decrease. Our study showed that it seems reasonable to consider Holstein-Friesian cows aged at least 9 years at culling to be long-living animals. This is primarily evidenced by the rapid increase in the culling due to old age in relation to younger cows. Nowadays the above age limit can be suggested as a criterion of longevity for Holstein-Friesian cows but the criterion should be updated to the relation genotype-environment-economy that tends to change over time.

The bioeconomic efficiency of cow-calf systems was compared by a deterministic dynamic simulation. The simulation model considered stable cow-calf systems differentiated by the maximum age for culling cows, lifetime, culled at 4–13 years old. The necessary supply of metabolizable energy for the herd was established as natural grasslands, cultivated pasture in the winter/spring, and pre-dried pasture produced by the system. The biological efficiency of the systems was considered the ratio between the production of total live weight and the metabolizable energy consumed over one production cycle. Economic efficiency was determined by the ratio between gross margin and production area and the ratio between gross margin and number of cows. Bioeconomic efficiency was determined by a simple linear regression between biological efficiency, economic efficiency per area, and economic efficiency per cow. The efficiency of the animal unit, considering biological efficiency and economic efficiency per area were better in the system that culled cows at 4 years old, while economic efficiency per cow was better in the system that culled cows at 13 years old. In determining the bioeconomic efficiency of the systems, the best results were found in the system that culled cows at 6 years old, which suggests that the best efficiency of a cow-calf herd is reached when the adult age and mature weight of the cow are reached, and there is no more energy used for growing. The results indicate that stable cow-calf herds express their best biological efficiency and economic efficiency per area when the cow culling age is lower. However, economic efficiency per cow depends on cows that remain in the herd as long as possible. The culling age of cow that balances these biological and economic indicators is reached around 5 and half years.

Longevity in commercial sows is often selected for through stayability traits measured in purebred animals. However, this may not be justifiable because longevity and stayability may be subject to both genotype by environment interaction (G × E) and genotype by genotype interaction (G × G). This study tested the hypothesis that stayability to service after first parity is more strongly genetically correlated with longevity in commercial herds when stayability is measured in commercial herds rather than multiplier herds. The analysis was based on farrowing- and service-records from 470,824 sows (189,263 multiplier; 281,561 commercial) and 300 herds (156 multiplier; 144 commercial sows). Multiplier sows were either purebred Landrace or Yorkshire and commercial sows were mainly rotationally crossbreds between the two breeds. Commercial longevity was defined as age in days when culled (LongC), and stayability to service after first parity was defined for both commercial sows (StayC) and multiplier sows (StayM). The genetic correlations between LongC, StayC, and StayM were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood using linear mixed models. Genetic parameters were estimated separately for Landrace and Yorkshire. In Landrace, the genetic correlations between LongC and StayC, LongC and StayM, and StayC and StayM were 0.86 ± 0.02, 0.24 ± 0.05, and 0.34 ± 0.06, respectively. In Yorkshire, the genetic correlations between LongC and StayC, LongC and StayM, and StayC and StayM were 0.81 ± 0.03, 0.17 ± 0.05, and 0.18 ± 0.7, respectively. Conclusively, longevity in commercial herds is more strongly correlated with stayability when stayability is measured in commercial herds rather than multiplier herds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different proportions (i.e., 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%) of censored (CEN) or penalized (PEN) data in the prediction of breeding values (EBVs), genetic parameters, and computational efficiency for two longevity indicators (i.e., traditional and functional longevity; TL and FL, respectively). In addition, three different criteria were proposed for PEN: (1) assuming that all cows with censored records were culled one year after their last reported calving; (2) assuming that cows with censored records older than nine years were culled one year after their last reported calving, while censored (missing) records were kept for cows younger than nine years; and (3) assuming that cows with censored records older than nine years were culled one year after their last reported calving, while cows younger than nine years were culled two years after their last reported calving. All analyses were performed using random regression models based on fourth order Legendre orthogonal polynomials. The proportion of commonly selected animals and EBV correlations were calculated between the complete dataset (i.e., without censored or penalized data; COM) and all simulated proportions of CEN or PEN. The computational efficiency was evaluated based on the total computing time taken by each scenario to complete 150,000 Bayesian iterations. In summary, increasing the CEN proportion significantly (p-value < 0.05 by paired t-tests) decreased the heritability estimates for both TL and FL. When compared to CEN, PEN tended to yield heritabilities closer to COM, especially for FL. Moreover, similar heritability patterns were observed for all three penalization criteria. High proportions of commonly selected animals and EBV correlations were found between COM and CEN with 20% censored data (for both TL and FL), and COM and all levels of PEN (for FL). The proportions of commonly selected animals and EBV correlations were lower for PEN than CEN for TL, which suggests that the criteria used for PEN are not adequate for TL. Analyses using COM and CEN took longer to finish than PEN analyses. In addition, increasing the amount of censored records also tended to increase the computational time. A high proportion (>20%) of censored data has a negative impact in the genetic evaluation of longevity. The penalization criteria proposed in this study are useful for genetic evaluations of FL, but they are not recommended when analyzing TL.

The dairy and beef industries have been identified as an important producer of methane emissions, yet little is known of its relationship to other economically relevant traits. Stayability (STAY) is a fertility and longevity-related trait with EPD (Expected Progeny Differences) representing predicted genetic differences in the probability of daughters remaining in the breeding herd until six years of age. Understanding the relationship between methane emissions and STAY might inform breeders of the consequences of selection on either trait. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship of methane emissions with STAY in Angus cattle (Bos Taurus) from Colorado State University's John E. Rouse Beef Improvement Center located in southern Wyoming. A total of 123 animals (86 steers, 37 heifers) were sorted into four different pens where individual methane emissions were measured using a GreenFeed system (C-Lock, Rapid City, South Dakota). Stayability was evaluated using EPD values. A general linear model was used to calculate the regression of the average methane emission of each animal measured in grams/day (mean = 163.08, SD = 38.75, min = 87.72, max = 247.03) on STAY (mean = 0.59, SD = 0.69, min = -2.41, max = 2.36), including age in days (mean = 258.2, SD = 20.01, min = 200, max = 298) and pen as effects in the model. The regression of methane emission on STAY EPD was 0.52, however, it was not significant (P = 0.87). The effect of pen was significant (P < 0.001?). Age was significant, having an effect of 0.6794 (P = 3.93e-08). This suggests that younger individuals had decreased methane emissions. Selection for high levels of prolificacy has allowed substantial improvements in the production efficiency of New Zealand (NZ) sheep farms, but the consequences on ewe lifetime performance are mostly unknown. In this study, the relationship between the level of prolificacy early in ewes’ productive lives and their probability to survive later (i.e. stayability) was evaluated in two contrasting NZ flock environments. Records were obtained from 6605 ewes from four ram breeder flocks representing either a moderate (n=2) or a highly variable (n=2) nutritional environment. All ewes lambed for the first time at 2 years of age and were mated the following year. The number of lambs born during the first 2 years of productive life (NLB2–3) was used as a measure of early prolificacy. This study aimed to propose novel longevity indicators by comparing genetic parameters for traditional (TL; i.e., the cow’s lifespan after the first calving) and functional (FL; i.e., how long the cow stayed in the herd while also calving; assuming no missing (FLa) or missing (FLb) records for unknown calving) longevity, considering different culling reasons (natural death, structural problems, disease, fertility, performance, and miscellaneous). Longevity definitions were evaluated from 2 to 15 years of age, using single- and multiple-trait Bayesian random regression models (RRM). The RRM fitting heterogenous residual variance and fourth order Legendre polynomials were considered as the optimal models for the majority of longevity indicators. The average heritability estimates over ages for FLb (from 0.08 to 0.25) were always higher than those for FLa (from 0.07 to 0.19), and higher or equal to the ones estimated for TL (from 0.07 to 0.23), considering the different culling reasons. The average genetic correlations estimated between ages were low to moderate (~0.40), for all longevity definitions and culling reasons. However, removing the extreme ages (i.e., 2 and >12 years) increased the average correlation between ages (from ~0.40 to >0.70). The genetic correlations estimated between culling reasons were low (0.12 and 0.20 on average, considering all ages and ages between 3 and 12 years old, respectively), indicating that longevity based on different culling reasons should be considered as different traits in the genetic evaluations. Higher average genetic correlations (estimated from 3 to 12 years old) were observed between TL and FLb (0.73) in comparison to TL and FLa (0.64), or FLa and FLb (0.65). Consequently, a higher average proportion of commonly-selected sires, for the top 1% sires, was also observed between TL and FLb (91.74%), compared to TL and FLa (59.68%), or FLa and FLb (61.01%). Higher prediction accuracies for the expected daughter performances (calculated based on the pedigree information) were obtained for FLb in comparison to TL and FLa. Our findings indicate that FLb is preferred for the genetic evaluation of longevity. In addition, it is recommended including multiple longevity traits based on different groups of culling reasons in a selection sub-index, as they are genetically-different traits. Genetic selection based on breeding values at the age of four years is expected to result in greater selection responses for increased longevity in North American Angus cattle.

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the influence of yearling weight on the occurrence of early pregnancy and to determine differences between precocious and non-precocious heifers in terms of pre- and postnatal calf mortality, calf weight and height, mature cow weight, and stayability of the cow in the herd. Data from 26 977 females of a Nelore herd that participated in the breeding season between 1986 and 2004 were analyzed. The influence of yearling weight on sexual precocity and differences between precocious and non-precocious heifers in pre- and postnatal calf mortality and stayability were analyzed using the GENMOD procedure of the SAS program. Differences in the growth traits between precocious and non-precocious animals were estimated by contrast analysis. Three groups were analyzed for postnatal mortality: first calving of the heifers, calves born from the third calving and all offspring of the cow. In order to have a standardized calving to conception period for all females (precocious and non-precocious), calves born from the second calving were not included in the analysis. This was necessary because the first calving to conception period (days open) of precocious heifers was longer than for non-precocious due to farm reproductive management. No differences in postnatal mortality rates, from the third calving, were observed between the two groups of heifers studied. Analysis of all offspring of the dams showed a 9% higher probability of death of calves born to precocious heifers compared with calves born to non-precocious heifers. With respect to stayability, precocious heifers presented 33% greater odds to remain in the herd until 5 and 6 years of age and 28% greater odds to remain in the herd until 7 years when compared with non-precocious heifers. Precocious heifers weaned calves (205 days) significantly heavier than non-precocious ones, 1.410 and 0.797 kg considering the weaning weights of all offspring and of the third calving, respectively. With respect to sexual precocity, the results suggest that the probability of heifers to become pregnant at 16 months of age increases with increasing weight. However, heifers weighing more than 240 kg present practically the same pregnancy probability. Nevertheless, exposure of heifers during the early breeding season is recommended for beef cattle herds raised in tropical regions in view of the numerous benefits demonstrated here.

Heifer pregnancy (HPG) and Stayability (STAY) are female reproductive traits that have EPD reported by the Red Angus Association of America. Challenges arise when making genetic predictions for these traits. Specifically, HPG and STAY phenotypes can only be collected on females retained in the breeding herd and have low heritability estimates. Additionally, STAY is measured late in an animal’s life. The objective of this research was to investigate the genetic relationships between HPG or STAY and 13 other traits, which included measurements of growth, carcass, ultrasound, and scrotal circumference. For STAY relationships between mature weight (MW), body condition score (BCS), teat score (TS), and udder suspension score (US) were also evaluated. Data from 142,146 and 164,235 animals were used in the analyses for HPG and STAY, respectively. Genetic relationships were investigated using a series of 2 trait animal models and a REML procedure. In all analyses, the appropriate contemporary groups were included as a fixed effect, and direct genetic as a random effect. Additional fixed effects included as follows: sex for weight, carcass and ultrasound traits, age of dam for weight traits, and age of measurement for ultrasound, carcass, BCS, udder traits, and MW. Maternal genetic effects for preweaning gain (Pre-WG), weaning weight (WW), and yearling weight (YW) were also modeled. Permanent environmental effects of the dam were modeled for the traits Pre-WG and WW. Permanent environment of the individual for the traits MW, BCS, TS, and US was also included. Heritability estimates were 0.12 ± 0.01 and 0.10 ± 0.01 for HPG and STAY, respectively. Heritability estimates for direct genetic effects of production traits were moderate to high in magnitude, maternal heritability estimates were low, and permanent environmental effects accounted for 0.00 to 0.18 of the total variation. The strongest genetic correlations were those among Pre-WGD (0.24 ± 0.08), WWD (0.18 ± 0.08), YWD (0.20 ± 0.07), ultrasound rib eye area direct (0.16 ± 0.08), and ultrasound backfat direct (0.14 ± 0.08) and HPG. The highest genetic correlations were between STAY and WWM (0.54 ± 0.05), YWM (0.36 ± 0.07), backfat (0.53 ± 0.20), marbling score (0.40 ± 0.20), UREA (0.19 ± 0.07), ultrasound backfat (0.37 ± 0.07), TS (0.30 ± 0.11), and US (0.23 ± 0.11). Relationships between HPG or STAY and other traits were minimal. These results suggest that genetic relationships exist between HPG or STAY and other more densely recorded traits. Beef cow stayability is a complex, economically important trait often used as an indicator of a cow's potential lifetime productivity. Stayability is defined as capability of a cow to maintain a perfect record up to 6 yr of age. This age is commonly cited as a financial break-even point, where initial costs of cow development and maintenance are recovered by her cumulative net income from yearly calf receipts. Later-maturing Bos indicus-Bos taurus crossbred cows may experience reproductive difficulty early in life but have a high potential for a long reproductive life span. It was the objective of this study to identify genetic variants associated with measures of beef cow stayability. A population of B. indicus-B. taurus crossbred cows (n = 305) from central Texas was used. Phenotypes for various measures of stayability to 6 yr of age were produced by artificially imposing five different culling criteria on data from the population. Cows were scored either as a 1 (indicating a perfect record through 6 yr) or a 0 (indicating failure at or before 6 yr), under each criterion. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted for each criterion using univariate procedures and prefitting the fixed effect of cow contemporary group. SNP associations for two criteria surpassed the false discovery threshold of 0.15, when a cow was scored as 0 upon her first failure to wean a calf, regardless of reason, through 6 yr (criterion 2), and when a cow was scored as 0 upon her first failure to give birth to a calf, through 6 yr (criterion 3). Associated SNP were found on bovine chromosomes (BTA) 1, 2, 5, 9, 18, and 21 for criterion 2 and on BTA 1, 5, 11, 15, and 24 for criterion 3. A critical region on BTA 5: 43-50 Mb was identified for each criterion. Due to the similarities to prior work, the tendency for B. indicus cattle to experience reproductive difficulties early in life, and due to the large proportion of cows that left the herd at an early age under these criteria, these results suggest that the associations are likely driven by an early life trait such as age at puberty or rate of heifer development. Reproductive performance is the most important component of cattle production from the standpoint of economic sustainability of commercial beef enterprises. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) and Stayability (STAY) genetic predictions are 2 selection tools published by the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) to assist with improvements in reproductive performance. Given the importance of HPG and STAY to the profitability of commercial beef enterprises, the objective of this study was to identify QTL associated with both HPG and STAY in Red Angus cattle. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed using deregressed HPG and STAY EBV, calculated using a single-trait animal model and a 3-generation pedigree with data from the Spring 2015 RAAA National Cattle Evaluation. Each individual animal possessed 74,659 SNP genotypes. Individual animals with a deregressed EBV reliability > 0.05 were merged with the genotype file and marker quality control was performed. Criteria for sifting genotypes consisted of removing those markers where any of the following were found: average call rate less than 0.85, minor allele frequency < 0.01, lack of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P < 0.0001), or extreme linkage disequilibrium (r² > 0.99). These criteria resulted in 2,664 animals with 62,807 SNP available for GWAS. Association studies were performed using a Bayes Cn model in the BOLT software package. Marker significance was calculated as the posterior probability of inclusion (PPI), or the number of instances a specific marker was sampled divided by the total number of samples retained from the Markov chain Monte Carlo chains. Nine markers, with a PPI ≥ 3% were identified as QTL associated with HPG on BTA 1, 11, 13, 23, and 29. Bulls are used across a wide variety of environments through the use of artificial insemination. However, not all bulls rank the same for genetic merit in all environments. Sire selection could be more accurate via improved methods of characterization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of genotype by environment (GxE) interaction for stayability in Red Angus in the United States. Environments were defined as nine regions within the continental United States with similar temperature-humidity indices. Stayability was defined as having a calf at age 4 given that the cow had a calf at age 2. A probit sire model was used to determine the heritability on the underlying scale. The percentage of females that calved at age 2 that also calved at age 4 ranged from 32.9 to 58.5% across regions and was 55.0% for the national data set. The heritability of stayability ranged from 0.10 to 0.57 across regions and was 0.12 for the national data set. Genetic correlations were estimated for stayability between all pairs of regions. An estimate of less than 0.80 indicates GxE at a level for concern. Genetic correlations between regions ranged from 0.32 to 0.87 and were <0.80 for 29 of 36 region pairs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Effect of a ewe's litter size at birth on productive life traits was evaluated. • Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee ewes in range systems were considered. • Except for Targhee, ewes born in smaller litter sizes had longer productive lives. • Polypay ewes averaged larger litter sizes but had the shortest productive lives. • Selection on ewe productive life needs to consider optimum litter size. Ewe lifetime productivity has economic implications for producers because shorter lifetime productivity results in less profit. Productive years of ewes from extensive, range-based systems of the United States West are generally less than ewes from more temperate regions of the United States. Accordingly, ewes from range-based systems, especially those employing shed-lambing strategies, have been selected for increased litter size to offset decreased lifetime productivity. However, the relationship of the ewe's birth litter size (ELS B) has not been considered a potential contributor to lifetime productivity. Longevity (number of productive years, n = 1 per population) and stayability (probability to survive to the next age; ages 2–7 years, n = 6 per population) were investigated to understand ELS B effects on productive life. Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee breeds were used in this study. Across-breed (n = 11 550) and within-breed (Columbia, n = 4 398; Polypay, n = 4 534; Rambouillet, n = 5 922; Targhee, n = 6 482) analyses were used. Depending on the population, records spanned from 1950 to 2008, where ewe's birth year was included as a fixed effect in the animal model using restricted maximum likelihood estimation procedures. Fixed effects investigated included ELS B (single-, twin-, or triplet-born) and ewe breed (across-breed analyses only). Regardless of trait or population used, heritability ranged from 0.06 ± 0.02 to 0.34 ± 0.03, where stayability at younger ages had the highest estimates. The breed effect was significant in all across-breed analyses (0.0001 ≤ P ≤ 0.038; n = 7), where Polypay, a breed selected for accelerated lambing and increased fertility, averaged shorter productive life or had a lower probability of survival to the next age compared with other breeds (longevity: 0.009 ≤ P ≤ 0.223; stayability: 0.000 ≤ P ≤ 0.842). The ELS B was significant in 60% (n = 5) and 37% (n = 30) of longevity and stayability analyses, respectively. Except for Targhee, all analyses showed ewes born in smaller litter sizes were associated with longer productive lives or higher probability of surviving to the next age, particularly in across-breed analyses (e.g., longevity: single- vs twin-born ewes, P = 0.004; vs triplet-born ewes, P = 0.003). This study provides evidence that increasing prolificacy in ewes from extensive, range-based production systems may impact productive life. Sow longevity is an important trait for both economic as well as ethical reasons. Data from all sows under recording in Bavaria indicated that over the last ten years important figures related to sow longevity were almost constant. This study included approximately 60.000 sows from commercial farms raised in multiplier herdbook farms. Longevity was defined as the ability of a sow to have a second litter after a first litter was recorded (stayability), and it was coded as a binary trait. For single-trait analyses of stayability, binomial models fitting a logit-link function as well as linear models were applied. Estimates of heritability were very low for both models (0,04 and 0,02, respectively). Estimates of genetic correlation between stayability and performance test and station test traits were moderate to considerable and unfavourable. Estimates of genetic correlation between stayability and fertility traits were slightly negative. For certain traits it can be very helpful to combine data from herdbook farms and data from commercial farms for breeding purposes. Because of different selection strategies, data for longevity traits like stayability from commercial farms may be more informative than data from herd-book farms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The decision of premature culling cows directly impacts the profitability of dairy farms. A comprehensive characterization of the primary causes of culling reasons would greatly improve both management and selection objectives in dairy cattle breeding programs. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the temporal frequencies of 34 culling reasons in Canadian Holstein cows. After data editing and quality control, records from 3,096,872 cows culled from 9,683 herds spread across Canada were used for the analyses covering the periods from 1996 to 2020. Reproductive issues were the main culling reason accounting for 23.02%, followed by milk production (20.82%), health (20.39%), conformation problems (13.69%), economic factors (13.10%), accidents (5.67%), age-related causes (1.67%), and workability (1.63%). Nearly fifty-eight percent of cows were culled after 47 months of age. The observed frequencies of culling due to economic factors were lower than expected from 1996 to 2014 and higher than expected between 2015 and 2020. Reproduction issues had the highest culling frequencies during fall (24.54%), winter (24.02%), and spring (22.51%), while health issues were the most frequent (22.51%) culling reason in the summer season. Health issues (25.50%) and milk production (27.71%) were the most frequent culling reasons in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, respectively. Reproductive issues showed the highest frequency across climates based on the Köppen climate classification, except for Csb (Dry-summer subtropical or Mediterranean climate) and Bsk (Middle latitude steppe climate), which correspond to small regions in Canada, where production was the most frequent culling reason (29.42% and 21.56%, respectively). Reproductive and milk performance issues were the two main culling reasons in most ecozones, except in Boreal Shield and Atlantic Marine, where health issues had the highest frequencies (25.12 and 23.75%, respectively). This study examined the genetic and phenotypic associations between finisher performance, pre-breeding body condition of the gilt, subsequent lactation feed intake and survival of the primiparous sow to farrow in the second parity. Complete data were available on ∼2200 sows, along with additional cohort and historical performance data. Genetic variation was observed for average lactation feed intake (heritability: 0.18 ± 0.04), with a significant proportion of observed variation in average intake attributable to variation in lactation length. Weight and body condition (fatness) at finishing were very highly correlated genetically (0.89 ± 0.03 and 0.90 ± 0.02) and moderately correlated phenotypically (0.58 ± 0.01 and 0.58 ± 0.01) with weight and body condition before mating. Estimates of genetic (rg) and phenotypic (rp) correlations between feed intake recorded at finishing and average lactation feed intake (LADI) were moderate (rg = 0.26 ± 0.16 and 0.42 ± 0.22) and low (rp = 0.07 ± 0.02 and 0.08 ± 0.03), with rg dependent on the models and data subsets used for lactation intake. Non-unity genetic correlations imply that different genetic control mechanisms regulate feed intake during growth and lactation. Moderate genetic correlations between lactation feed intake with live weight (TWT) or growth rate (TADG) recorded at selection and live weight before mating (0.42 ± 0.11, 0.42 ± 0.11 and 0.37 ± 0.15) were considerably higher than the corresponding phenotypic correlations for LADI with TADG or 29WT (0.09 ± 0.02 and 0.08 ± 0.02). Correlations between fatness at selection (TFAT) or mating (29FT) and LADI were negative but not significantly different from 0. Overall, these data suggest that there is exploitable genetic variation for feed intake during lactation, and that selection is possible if lactation feed intakes are recorded. However, genetic correlations suggest that early growth seems to be related to lactation feed intake capacity. There was generally no strong evidence that selection for lean growth potential in dam lines will substantially diminish sow lactation intake capacity as a correlated response.

Data on sow body weight (BW) and fatness (n = ∼2250 pregnant sows) and reproductive data (including historical: n = ∼18 000) were used to examine the genetic and phenotypic associations between body condition before and after farrowing, gestational outcomes, lactation feed intake and the gilts’ ability to survive unculled to farrow in the second parity. Within-trait genetic correlations were very high between weight (0.77 ± 0.06) and fat depth (0.91 ± 0.04) recorded before farrowing and at weaning. Litter size traits were generally uncorrelated genetically with aspects of sow BW and body condition. However, genetic correlations indicated that sows producing heavier piglets at birth had litters with increased gain (0.36 ± 0.16), and were characterised by greater weight (−0.72 ± 0.08) and fat change (−0.19 ± 0.15) during lactation, reflected to a lesser extent by lower weight (−0.12 ± 0.11) and fatness (−0.17 ± 0.10) at weaning. Genetic correlations (ra) between reproductive traits and lactation feed intake were generally low, but favourable. However, lactation intake was positively correlated with measures of sow size (ra = ∼0.55), such that selection for lactation feed intake would likely be accompanied by increased mature sow size. Phenotypic correlations (rp) showed that sow survival to the second parity (FAR12) was positively influenced by litter size and fat depth at weaning, supporting attributes of increased fatness before farrowing, less weight loss during lactation and an increased lactation intake.

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for longevity from Swedish crossbred sows to investigate the possibilities of selecting for this trait. Data were collected from 16 commercial piglet-producing herds, on crossbred (Landrace × Yorkshire) sows farrowing in the period 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2004. The data set with records on 10 373 sows was split into two sets according to the breed of the sire, i.e. Landrace sires (LS) or Yorkshire sires (YS). Removal hazard during productive life (PL) was analysed with survival analysis, using a sire model. Stayability from first to second litter (STAY12), stayability from first to third litter (STAY13), length of productive life (LPL) and lifetime production (LTP) were analysed with linear models, using an animal model. Females after the worst sire had 1.7 times higher (progeny of LS) and 2.4 times higher (progeny of YS) risk of removal than females after the best sire. Heritability for PL was estimated at 0.06 (LS) and 0.12 (YS). The heritabilities for the linear longevity traits ranged from 0.03 to 0.08. Genetic correlations between the four linear longevity traits were all high and positive (0.6 to 1.0), as were the phenotypic correlations (0.5 to 0.8). The correlations (Spearman rank) between the sire’s estimated breeding values for all the five longevity traits were all significant (P < 0.001) and moderate to strong in both data sets. Estimated breeding value (EBV) correlations between the five longevity traits and traits included in the present Swedish breeding evaluation (Quality Genetics (QG)) were significant in a few cases. Significant and favourable EBV correlations were found between age at first farrowing and both STAY12 and STAY13 (−0.20 and −0.31), as well as between litter weight at 3 weeks and LPL and LTP (0.13 to 0.20). Significant and unfavourable EBV correlations were found between age at 100 kg and STAY12 (0.32), as well as between the exterior conformation score from testing station and PL (−0.20). The level of the estimated heritabilities for longevity indicates that genetic improvement of sow longevity would be possible. However, overall, there was no strong indirect selection for sow longevity with the current Swedish breeding evaluation (QG).

Foram preditas diferenças esperadas na progênie para probabilidade de permanência no rebanho (stayability) de 4180 touros com filhas na base de dados do Programa de Melhoramento Genético da Raça Nelore, utilizando-se modelo de limiar unicaráter de touro-avô materno, sob metodologia bayesiana. Os touros foram classificados em ordem decrescente e aqueles com diferenças esperadas na progênie acima de 57,6%, considerados como TOP1%, foram analisados quanto à genealogia visando avaliar a existência de efeito de família, bem como a contribuição dos genearcas e ancestrais da raça Nelore para a característica considerada. Os principais fundadores, que juntos somaram 18,8% dos genes presentes nos touros TOP1%, foram Karvadi IMP (com 8,2% dos genes, essencialmente via seu filho Chummak), Godhavari IMP (com 6% de contribuição, via Kurupathy e Neófito), Rastã IMP e Falo da BV (2,5 e 2,1%, respectivamente, via materna, pois não apresentaram parentesco com touros ancestrais). O touro Rolex, da variedade mocha, esteve presente em 12 linhas (maternas ou paternas), via seu neto Cardeal. Dos sete ancestrais da raça Nelore com maiores contribuições genéticas (que somaram 15,3% dos genes), cinco foram da variedade mocha. Somente 28 animais aportaram 50% da variabilidade genética, evidenciando o baixo número de animais utilizados como reprodutores na raça Nelore.Expected progeny differences (EPD) for stayability were estimated for 4,180 sires with daughters in the Program for Genetic Improvement of the Nellore Breed. The univariate threshold sire-maternal grandsire model was used, following a Bayesian methodology. The sires were ranked for stayability in descending order, and those whose EPD were higher than 57.6% were regarded as TOP1%. Pedigree analysis was then conducted in order to establish whether a family tendency was present, as well as the contribution of Nellore founders and ancestors for the trait under consideration. The main founders, which together were responsible for 18.8% of the genes in TOP1% sires, were Karvadi IMP (with 8.2% of genes, basically through its son Chummak), Godhavari IMP (with 6% of genes, through Kurupathy and Neofito), Rastã IMP and Falo da BV (respectively with 2.5% and 2.1%, through mothers, since they are not related to the ancestor sires). Rolex, a polled sire, stayed in twelve lineages - paternal or maternal - through its grandson Cardeal. Among the seven Nellore ancestors with the highest genetic contributions (15.3% of genes when put together), five were of the polled variety. Only 28 animals apportioned 50% of the total genetic variability, which is indicative of the small number of animals used as Nellore reproducers.

The relationship between linear type traits and stayability was analyzed in 34 492 Czech Fleckvieh cows. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between linear type traits and stayability of cows. The observed correlations were r = -0.04 for stature, r = -0.08 for muscularity, r = -0.14 for rump angle, r = -0.03 for rump width, r = -0.01 for rear legs set and r = -0.18 for foot angle. The following correlations were found for udder traits: r = 0.18 for fore udder, r = 0.12 for rear udder, r = 0.16 for central ligament, r = -0.06 for teat placement, r = 0.06 for teat length and r = 0.18 for udder depth. Udder traits can be used for predicting the longevity of cows.

Selection for high levels of prolificacy has allowed substantial improvements in the production efficiency of New Zealand (NZ) sheep farms, but the consequences on ewe lifetime performance are mostly unknown. In this study, the relationship between the level of prolificacy early in ewes’ productive lives and their probability to survive later (i.e. stayability) was evaluated in two contrasting NZ flock environments. Records were obtained from 6605 ewes from four ram breeder flocks representing either a moderate (n=2) or a highly variable (n=2) nutritional environment. All ewes lambed for the first time at 2 years of age and were mated the following year. The number of lambs born during the first 2 years of productive life (NLB2–3) was used as a measure of early prolificacy. Effects of NLB2–3 on stayability to 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 years old were analysed using logistic regression. Curvilinear effects (logit-transformed) were detected (P<0.05) until stayability to 6 years and to 8 years old in the highly variable and the moderate environment, respectively. The NLB2–3 that resulted in maximum expected stayability to various ages was 3.9 to 4.2, and 4.5 to 4.7 lambs in the highly variable and in the moderate flock environments, respectively. In addition, ewe stayability was reduced when the proportion of the litter that survived from birth to weaning (i.e. ewe rearing ability) was submaximal during the early productive life. High prolific ewes had a low rearing ability whatever the environment whereas the rearing ability of lowly prolific ewes was apparently more sensitive to the nutritional environment. The poor maternal performance of ewes with low levels of NLB2–3 led to a premature culling by breeders whereas the high early reproductive effort associated with high levels of NLB2–3 seemed to be at the cost of ewes’ survival, even in the moderate flock environment. In conclusion, the flock environment influenced the level of early prolificacy beyond which ewe longevity was reduced. The objective of this study was to understand the associations of calf growth traits with subsequent milk yield and body weight (BW). Data were collected for 281 Holstein heifer calves from 6 different calf trials of varying lengths (4 to 8 wk) conducted at Pennsylvania State University between 2003 and 2010. Calves were classified as high, medium, or low for hip height, starter feed intake, BW, and growth rate. Milk yield and cow BW were recorded during subsequent lactations. In total, there were 169,734 daily milk records and 136,153 cow BW records available. Data were evaluated using mixed model equations. Separate models were used for each calf growth trait initially, followed by models that considered multiple growth measures. Each model included age at calving, treatment within trial, parity, days in milk, lactation, and one of the calf growth traits as well as the interaction between lactation and days in milk as fixed effects. Cow and calendar week by year were fitted as random effects. Heifers from the low hip height classification as calves produced less milk across lactations after accounting for BW differences. Cows from the medium BW classification as calves produced more milk in early lactation than cows from the high BW classification as calves after accounting for differences in height. Calves that grew more quickly, ate more, and weighed more were heavier as first-lactation heifers and as mature cows. Our results suggest that the type of preweaning growth is an important consideration for future milk yield. Both feed efficiency and sow production are economically important traits in pig breeding. One challenge in a maternal line such as Norwegian Landrace is to breed for highly feed efficient fattening pigs and, at the same time, produce sows with high daily feed intake to maintain their BCS in multiple parities. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic correlations among novel feed efficiency measurements on Norwegian Landrace boars and piglet production, stayability, and body condition in Norwegian Landrace sows. The feed efficiency measurements were lean meat and fat efficiency. These measurements were calculated using an extended residual feed intake model where total feed intake in the test period was the response variable and fat (kg) and lean meat (kg) on the carcass were included as both fixed and random regressions. The random regression coefficients that resulted from this model were breeding values, which represented the amount of feed used to produce an extra kilogram of lean meat and fat. The sow traits were stayability of the sow from first to second parity, BCS at weaning, litter weight at 3 wk, and total number of piglets born. All traits were recorded on first parity purebred Norwegian Landrace and analyzed using multivariate animal models. All genetic correlations between fat efficiency and sow traits were low. Significant genetic correlations were found only between fat efficiency and stayability (0.21 ± 0.11) and between fat efficiency and total litter weight at 3 wk (0.21 ± 0.10). The results indicate that selection for efficient deposition of fat could give poor stayability and lower litter weight at 3 wk in first parity sows. The genetic correlations between lean meat efficiency and sow traits were not significantly different from 0 and signified no genetic relationships between these traits. Longevity is important in pig production with respect to both economic and ethical aspects. Direct selection for longevity might be ineffective because 'true' longevity can only be recorded when a sow has been culled or died. Thus, indirect selection for longevity using information from other traits that can be recorded early in life and are genetically correlated with longevity might be an alternative. Leg conformation has been included in many breeding schemes for a number of years. However, proving that leg conformation traits are good early indicators for longevity still remains. Our aim was to study genetic associations between leg conformation traits of young (5 months; 100 kg) Swedish Yorkshire pigs in nucleus herds and longevity traits of sows in nucleus and multiplier herds. Data included 97 533 animals with information on conformation (Movement and Overall score) recorded at performance testing and 26 962 sows with information on longevity. The longevity traits were as follows: stayability from 1st to 2nd parity, lifetime number of litters and lifetime number of born alive piglets. Genetic analyses were performed with both linear models using REML and linear-threshold models using Bayesian methods. Heritabilities estimated using the Bayesian method were higher than those estimated using REML, ranging from 0.10 to 0.24 and 0.07 to 0.20, respectively. All estimated genetic correlations between conformation and longevity traits were significant and favourable. Sow longevity is a key component for efficient and profitable pig farming; however, approximately 50% of sows are removed annually from a breeding herd. There is no consensus in the scientific literature regarding a definition for sow longevity; however, it has been suggested that it can be measured using several methods such as stayability and economic indicators such as lifetime piglets produced. Sow longevity can be improved by genetic selection; however, it is rarely included in genetic evaluations. One reason is elongated time intervals required to collect complete lifetime data. The effect of genetic parameter estimation software in handling incomplete data (censoring) and possible early indicator traits were evaluated analysing a 30% censored data set (12 725 pedigreed Landrace × Large White sows that included approximately 30% censored data) with DMU6, THRGIBBS1F90 and GIBBS2 CEN. Heritability estimates were low for all the traits evaluated. The results show that the binary stayability traits benefited from being analysed with a threshold model compared to analysing with a linear model. Sires were ranked very similarly regardless if the program handled censoring when all available data were included. Accumulated born alive and stayability were good indicators for lifetime born alive traits. Na definição usual, foram consideradas vacas com pelo menos três partos até os 76 meses de idade como valor 1 e vacas com menos de 3 partos com valor zero. A definição alternativa considerou os valores 0, 1, 2 e 3, respectivamente, para vacas com menos de três, com três, quatro ou cinco partos até os 76 meses de idade. Foram obtidas estimativas de herdabilidade e preditas as DEPs (Diferenças Esperadas na Progênie) para probabilidade de permanência no rebanho de 4.180 touros com filhas na base de dados do Programa de Melhoramento Genético da Raça Nelore (PMGRN-USP). Utilizaram-se o modelo linear unicaráter de touro avô-materno e a análise Bayesiana, por meio do software MTGSAM_threshold (Multiple-Trait Gibbs Sampler for Animal Models). Considerou-se tamanho de cadeia de Gibbs de 225 mil, período de descarte amostral de 25 mil e tomada de amostra a cada 1.000 rodadas. A correlação entre classificações foi calculada por meio do SAS. As estimativas de herdabilidade foram de menor magnitude para a característica padrão (0,07 vs 0,08). A correlação de posto foi de 87,5%, ou seja, houve considerável alteração na classificação dos touros avaliados. Dados os valores das estimativas de variância de touro, de herdabilidade e de variações nas DEPs preditas, concluiu-se que a característica alternativa de permanência no rebanho possui maior capacidade de detecção da variabilidade genética que a característica padrão, sob modelo linear.An alternative definition of stayability was compared to an usual one. The usual definition in this study classifies the cows with at least three calvings at age of 76 months as success, setting them a value 1, and the ones with less than three calvings at this age as failure, setting them a value 0. The alternative definition sets the cows the values 0, 1, 2, or 3, according to the number of calvings: less than three, three, four, or five calves at age of 76 months, respectively. Heritability estimates and EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) of stayability were obtained using the information of 4,180 bulls with daughters in the database of the genetic breeding program of the Nellore cattle (PMGRN-USP). Both maternal grandsire single trait linear model and bayesian analysis were part of the MTGSAM_threshold (Multiple-Trait Gibbs Sampler for Animal Models) software. The implementation considered a length of Gibbs chain of 225 thousand, a period of burn-in of 25 thousand and a thinning interval at each 1 thousand runs. The correlation between both ranks was calculated by SAS (Statistical Analysis System). The heritability estimates were 0.07 to the usual definition of the trait versus 0.08 to the alternative one. The rank correlation was 87.5%, with considerable change on bull classifications. According to the estimates of sire variance and heritability and variations on EPDs, it can be concluded that the alternative definition of stayability has greater capacity to detect genetic variation under a linear model.

Foram obtidas estimativas de herdabilidade e preditas diferenças esperadas na progênie para probabilidade de permanência no rebanho (stayability) de 4180 touros com filhas na base de dados do Programa de Melhoramento Genético da Raça Nelore. Modelo de limiar e modelo linear foram utilizados sob análise Bayesiana via software multiple-trait Gibbs sampler for animal models. A implementação adotada considerou tamanho de cadeia de Gibbs de 225 mil, período de descarte amostral de 25 mil e tomada de amostra a cada mil rodadas. As estimativas de herdabilidade foram de menor magnitude para o modelo linear, 0,065, contra 0,158 sob modelo de limiar. Quando transformadas para escala normal subjacente, o valor obtido ficou em 0,13±0,05, bem próximo àquele encontrado sob modelo de limiar. A correlação entre classificações foi de 97%. O modelo de análise considerado para stayability, sob enfoque bayesiano, parece não influenciar a classificação dos animais quanto aos valores genéticos preditos. Análises sob modelo linear, com reduzido tempo de processamento, poderiam ser preferidas bastando transformar a escala da característica para obter a estimativa de herdabilidade.Heritability and expected progeny difference (EPD) for stayability based on progeny records of 4,180 sires from the Programa de Melhoramento Genético da Raça Nelore were estimated. Bayesian analyses for threshold and linear models were performed using the software multiple trait Gibbs sampler for animal model. Gibbs size chain of 225,000, burn-in of 25,000 and thinning interval of 1,000 cycles were considered for implementation purpose. The heritability estimated by linear model (.065) was lower than for threshold model (0.158). The heritability estimate for transformed continuous threshold scale was .13±.05 which is close to the heritability estimate for threshold model. The high rank correlation between the solutions from both models (97%) suggests the stayability analysis under Bayesian perspective does not influence the rank of the animal EPD. Therefore linear model analysis for transformed threshold stayability data, which has a reduced processing time, should be used.

The objective of this study was to determine heritability and genetic correlation estimates between dry matter intake (DMI) and Stayability in Angus cattle originating from the John E. Rouse Beef Improvement Center. From the years 2015–2021, 640 steers were fed in confinement using a GrowSafe System® to measure individual DMI. The duration of feeding varied each year; however, mean test length was 49 ± 0.31 days with a 21-day warm-up period to allow for acclimation to the environment and ration. A bivariate animal model was used. Stayability was evaluated using a binary, probit threshold model while DMI was evaluated as a continuous trait. In addition to the 640 steers with intake, a total of 1,673 pedigree-related cows possessed a Stayability observation. Cows were awarded a ‘1’ if they maintained functionality within the herd for six years. Those not achieving the six-year threshold were given a ‘0’. Mean DMI calculated for the steers was 10.11 ± 0.12 kg/day while the mean for stayability was 0.59 ± .15 (59% of females in this study remained in the herd for at least six years). Fixed effects in the model included contemporary group and age. Contemporary groups were defined as year, pen and test duration for DMI. Contemporary groups for Stayability were solely the year of birth for a given cohort. Individual animal was included as a random effect for both Stayability and DMI to account for the direct genetic effects for both traits. A 3-generation pedigree file containing 3,421 angus influenced animals with 785 unique sires and 2,425 unique dams was used to link the steers to the cows in this study. Residual covariance between DMI and Stayability in this study was fixed at 0. The heritability estimate for DMI was 0.26 ± 0.12 making it moderately heritable with a phenotypic variance of 9.29 kg2 ± 0.55. The heritability estimate for Stayability was quite low 0.02 ± 0.39. The genetic correlation between DMI and Stayability determined by this model was 0.8211 ± 1.2. Selection for sow longevity using information from traits, which are expressed in early life and genetically highly related to longevity, is expected to be more effective than direct selection as it can overcome the disadvantage of late recording of true longevity. Our aim was to investigate the correlation between leg conformation recorded on young pigs, litter size at first parity and longevity of Danish Landrace and Yorkshire sows. Information on conformation from 116,733 Landrace and 89,963 Yorkshire pigs and information on reproduction and longevity from 27,070 Landrace and 11,895 Yorkshire sows were analyzed. All considered traits were low to moderately heritable, ranging from 0.02 to 0.41. In general, both conformation and reproduction traits were favorably genetically correlated with longevity (0.07–0.39 and 0.00–0.58, respectively). Increasing longevity of beef cows by decreasing the proportion culled due to reproductive failure provides an efficient process to rebuild a cow herd and can reduce number of replacements needed to sustain a constant herd size. Rate of reproductive failure varies due to cow age, where failure in cows 2 to 4 yr of age is often greater than in cows 5 to 7 yr of age. In addition, BW of cow and calf at weaning increase as cows advance from 2 to 5 yr of age. The cumulative effect of increasing retention of young cows is improved production efficiency through decreased replacement rate and changing age structure of the herd resulting in a greater proportion of cows at maximal production potential for calf BW at weaning and cow BW at time of culling. Calculations from cow age-specific culling and BW data from commercial and research herds indicated that reducing replacement rate from 18% to 14% resulted in a 23% increase in calf BW weaned and a 2% increase in cull cow BW per pregnant replacement heifer going into the herd. Although improving longevity increases production efficiency, genetic advancement in sustained reproductive function is challenging, as it is the sequential culmination of the annual repetition of numerous discrete physiological processes, each ending in a qualitative response. Successful completion of one process is prerequisite to evaluating subsequent processes. These physiological processes are subject to nutritional threshold requirements that may vary due to genetic potential for other production traits such as milk, growth, and mature size resulting in genetic-by-nutrition interactions. This is in contrast to most traits for which EPD exist, where genetic-byenvironment interactions are not considered to be significant. Extensive research concerning impact of limited nutrition on reproduction has led to recommendations that heifers and cows be fed to a threshold BW or BCS to ensure reproductive success; a process that masks nutritional interactions that might otherwise result in reproductive failure. This management approach minimizes selection for animals capable of sustained reproductive function under limited nutritional environments. Rearing and managing cows under nutritionally limited environments may lead to adaptations that result in relatively high levels of reproductive success under lower input levels. This study was designed to estimate genetic parameters for the following traits of Brahman cattle in Brazil: age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), rebreeding (REB), and stayability (STAY). For REB, the value 1 was assigned to heifers that rebred and calved after first calving and the value 0 was assigned to heifers that failed to rebreed after first calving. Likewise, for STAY, the value 1 was assigned to cows that calved at least 3 times by the time they reach 6 yr of age; otherwise, the value 0 was assigned. A bivariate analysis was used to estimate covariances components by using linear animal model for CI and AFC and threshold animal model for REB and STAY. The mean h2 were 0.10, 0.02, 0.22, and 0.10 for AFC, CI, REB, and STAY, respectively. The genetic correlations were -0.13 between AFC and CI, -0.35 between AFC and REB, -0.57 between AFC and STAY, and 0.32 between REB and STAY, which reveal that cows that remain productive for longer periods in the herd also start breeding younger and present greater chances to REB. The selection of Brahman cattle for reproductive traits, such as AFC, CI, REB, and STAY, will render low magnitude and long-term responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genetic parameters for ewes were estimated for stayability (STAY) and productive life (Prodlife). Records from 658,871 animals from 241 seed stock or ram breeder flocks and one research flock were used to estimate parameters for ram breeder flock STAY and Prodlife. These flocks would have a culling policy based on criteria typical of a commercial enterprise, but including culls based on knowledge such as estimated breeding values. A subset of 35,688 of these animals from 4 ram breeder and one research flock was used to infer the animals that might be culled based on the perspective of a commercial flock as these flocks recorded reasons for culling. These data were used to estimate parameters for commercial flock STAY and Prodlife. Heritability for ram breeder flock STAY until age 3 to 6 yr ranged from 0.07 to 0.09. The heritability of commercial flock STAY was similar in yr 5 and 6, but lower at 0.05 (age 3) and 0.07 (age 4). Heritability of Prodlife for ram breeder flock and commercial flock was respectively 0.10 and 0.13. The genetic correlations between ram breeder flock STAY and commercial flock STAY ranged from 0.20 to 0.99. Both STAY and Prodlife were most correlated genetically with the trait number of lambs born, at about 0.4, and to a lesser degree, live weight up to the age of 12 mo for the traits analyzed with lower genetic correlations estimated for the commercial flocks. Live weight at 18 mo and fleece weight had little or no correlation with STAY and Prodlife. From the data set used to estimate genetic parameters from a ram breeder flock, 4,330 animals were genotyped with the Illumina OvineSNP50 BeadChip and the genotypes used to develop genomic predictions via genomic best linear unbiased prediction. The animals used in the training data set were multibreed, but were heavily Romney breed based. The genomic prediction accuracy for ram breeder flock STAY, according to breed, was dependent on sample size and ranged from 0.4 to 0.44 for Romney and 0.26 to 0.4 for Coopworth. Accuracies for Perendale and Composites, for which sample sizes were less, were more variable. This study has derived genetic parameters for STAY and Prodlife and investigated genomic predictions for these traits. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the influence of yearling weight on the occurrence of early pregnancy and to determine differences between precocious and non-precocious heifers in terms of pre- and postnatal calf mortality, calf weight and height, mature cow weight, and stayability of the cow in the herd. Data from 26 977 females of a Nelore herd that participated in the breeding season between 1986 and 2004 were analyzed. The influence of yearling weight on sexual precocity and differences between precocious and non-precocious heifers in pre- and postnatal calf mortality and stayability were analyzed using the GENMOD procedure of the SAS program. Differences in the growth traits between precocious and non-precocious animals were estimated by contrast analysis. Three groups were analyzed for postnatal mortality: first calving of the heifers, calves born from the third calving and all offspring of the cow. In order to have a standardized calving to conception period for all females (precocious and non-precocious), calves born from the second calving were not included in the analysis. This was necessary because the first calving to conception period (days open) of precocious heifers was longer than for non-precocious due to farm reproductive management. No differences in postnatal mortality rates, from the third calving, were observed between the two groups of heifers studied. Analysis of all offspring of the dams showed a 9% higher probability of death of calves born to precocious heifers compared with calves born to non-precocious heifers. With respect to stayability, precocious heifers presented 33% greater odds to remain in the herd until 5 and 6 years of age and 28% greater odds to remain in the herd until 7 years when compared with non-precocious heifers. Precocious heifers weaned calves (205 days) significantly heavier than non-precocious ones, 1.410 and 0.797 kg considering the weaning weights of all offspring and of the third calving, respectively. With respect to sexual precocity, the results suggest that the probability of heifers to become pregnant at 16 months of age increases with increasing weight. However, heifers weighing more than 240 kg present practically the same pregnancy probability. Nevertheless, exposure of heifers during the early breeding season is recommended for beef cattle herds raised in tropical regions in view of the numerous benefits demonstrated here. The objective of the study presented here was to analyze the genetic relationships among heifer pregnancy (HP), age at first calving (AFC), stayability (STAY), average annual productivity of the cow, in kilograms of weaned calf per cow per year (PRODAM), postweaning weight gain (PWG), and hip height (HH) of Nelore females from 12 Brazilian herds. (Co)variance components were obtained by six-trait animal model using Gibbs sampling. The posterior mean of the heritability estimates were 0.37, 0.18, 0.19, 0.16, 0.21, and 0.37 for HP, AFC, STAY, PRODAM, PWG, and HH, respectively. In general, the genetic correlations were strong between traits related to reproduction, for example, −0.85 between HP and AFC, and 0.94 between STAY and PRODAM. Weak genetic correlations were obtained between reproductive and growth traits (absolute values ranging from 0.02 to 0.30). Although weak, the genetic correlations between PWG and reproductive traits were favorable, whereas the genetic correlations between HH and reproductive traits were close to zero and slightly unfavorable for HP, AFC, and STAY. An increase of HH is therefore expected to have little or no negative effect on the reproductive performance of females. The posterior mean of genetic correlation between PWG and HH was moderate (0.50). On the basis of the heritability, genetic correlation estimates, and time to obtain data, HP and PRODAM seems to show the best potential as selection criteria to improve the productive and reproductive performance of Nelore females. In principle, it is possible to select for increased PWG without compromising the reproduction of Nelore females. However, selection for PWG may result in an increase of female HH as a correlated response, a fact that could increase management costs in advanced generations of selection. In the light of the results, all traits studied here can be used as selection criteria and there is no strong evidence of genetic antagonism among traits related to reproduction and growth of Nelore females.
