Introduction: Investigations of biofeedback (BF) and neurofeedback (NF) training for nicotine addiction have been long documented to lead to positive gains in smoking status, behavior and to changes in brain activity. We aimed to: (a) evaluate a multi-visit combined BF/NF intervention as an alternative smoking cessation approach, (b) validate training-induced feedback learning, and (c) document effects on resting-state functional connectivity networks (rsFCN); considering gender and degree of nicotine dependence in a longitudinal design. Methods: We analyzed clinical, behavioral, and electrophysiological data from 17 smokers who completed five BF and 20 NF sessions and three evaluation stages. Possible neuroplastic effects were explored comparing whole-brain rsFCN by phase-lag index (PLI) for different brain rhythms. PLI connections with significant change across time were investigated according to different resting-state networks (RSNs).Results: Improvements in smoking status were observed as exhaled carbon monoxide levels, Total Oxidative Stress, and Fageström scores decreased while Vitamin E levels increased across time. BF/NF promoted gains in anxiety, self-esteem, and several aspects of cognitive performance. BF learning in temperature enhancement was observed within sessions. NF learning in theta/alpha ratio increase was achieved across baselines and within sessions. PLI network connections significantly changed across time mainly between or within visual, default mode and frontoparietal networks in theta and alpha rhythms, while beta band RSNs mostly changed significantly after BF sessions.Discussion: Combined BF/NF training positively affects the clinical and behavioral status of smokers, displays benefit in smoking harm reduction, plays a neuroprotective role, leads to learning effects and to positive reorganization of RSNs across time.Clinical Trial Registration:https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02991781.

Objectives In transplantation surgery, the ischaemic organ and reperfusion impairment after cold storage remains a considerable risk factor for impaired function and potential failure of the grafted organ. Substantial logistical efforts have been undertaken to reduce the cold ischaemic time because the demand for available transplant organs and the periods of cold ischaemia are increasing. Methods Four molecules were investigated (erythropoietin, sildenafil, lazaroid [U74389G], octreotide) in individual intravenous infusions 1 hour before the organ was harvested. This study was performed in 30 healthy landrace/large-white pigs (male; >10 weeks old; average weight, 22 ± 2 kg) in groups of six. The organs were studied at harvest, and at 8 and 24 hours post-harvest. Results The lazaroid molecule increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the liver and pancreas at 8 hours. Hepatic lazaroid molecules improved liver histology at 8 and 24 hours. For kidneys, erythropoietin had a positive effect at 24 hours post-harvest. For the pancreas, octreotide showed better performance. In the lungs, there was less interstitial oedema with erythropoietin and lazaroid compared with the control group at 8 hours post-harvest. Conclusion All molecules had a positive effect and decreased ischaemia/reperfusion graft injury. Thus, pretreatment before organ harvest has a beneficial role.

Background: Over the last few decades, there has been a dramatic increase in hematological malignancies (HMs) in the population of Sardinia. It is accepted that oxidative stress biomarkers have been demonstrated to be prognostically important in various neoplastic diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate serum vitamin E, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), Malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in 80 Sardinian patients with different HMs [acute myeloid leukemia (AML)(n=20), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) (n=20), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) (n=20) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) (n=20)] on the day of their diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Samples from all participants were obtained after an overnight fast (at least 10 hours). This study was approved and conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines and the Declaration of Helsinki. Patients and controls provided written, informed consent before entering the study. All study participants’ medical history and their medication were documented upon enrolling. Results: Lower levels of TAC and Vitamin E were observed in most of the studied groups compared to healthy controls (0.41-0.49 mmol/L vs. 0.56 mmol/L) (19.55-28.55 μmol/L vs. 34.51 μmol/L). Moreover, higher average MDA levels were observed in HL and NHL patients compared to healthy controls (16.6 ng/ml-17.8 ng/ml vs. 7.4 ng/ml). Additionally, the ROS values of all studied groups were found elevated. Serum TAC showed significant negative correlations with MDA values (R= -0.51; P

Introduction Gender affirming surgery of primary and/or secondary sex characteristics has been shown to alleviate gender dysphoria. A descriptive snapshot of current treatment preferences is useful to understand the needs of the transgender population seeking health care. This study aimed to describe preferences for gender affirming treatment, and their correlates, among individuals seeking health care for gender dysphoria in Sweden after major national legislative reforms. Methods Cross-sectional study where transgender patients (n = 232) recruited from all six Gender Dysphoria centers in Sweden 2016–2019, answered a survey on treatment preferences and sociodemographic, health, and gender identity-related information during the same time-period. Factors associated with preferring top surgery (breast augmentation or mastectomy), genital surgery, and other surgery (e.g., facial surgery) were examined in univariable and multivariable regression analyses in the 197 people without prior such treatment. Main study outcomes were preferences for feminizing or masculinizing hormonal and surgical gender affirming treatment. Results The proportion among birth assigned male and assigned female patients preferring top surgery was 55.6% and 88.7%, genital surgery 88.9% and 65.7%, and other surgery (e.g., facial surgery) 85.6% and 22.5%, respectively. Almost all participants (99.1%) wanted or had already received hormonal treatment and most (96.7%) wished for some kind of surgical treatment; 55.0% wanted both top and genital surgery. Preferring a binary pronoun (he/she) and factors indicating more severe gender incongruence were associated with a greater wish for surgical treatment. Participants with somatic comorbidities were less likely to want genital surgery, while aF with lacking social support were less likely to want internal genital surgery, in the multivariable analyses. Conclusions In this sample of Swedish young adults seeking health care for gender dysphoria, preferences for treatment options varied according to perceived gender identity. Policy Implications The study findings underline the need for individualized care and flexible gender affirming treatment options. The role of somatic comorbidities should be further explored, and support should be offered to transgender people in need. There is an unmet need for facial surgery among aM.

Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a frequently diagnosed cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Its rapid progression, combined with the limited treatment options at late stages, imposes the need for early detection and aggressive intervention. Based on the knowledge that hepatocarcinogenesis is significantly influenced by histone acetylation, we directed our search for novel HCC therapeutics among histone deacetylation inhibitors (HDACi). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of HDAC1/2 inhibitor Romidepsin in the well-established mouse model of diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced HCC. Materials and methods C56BL/6 mice were treated with Romidepsin at the critical point of 10 months after DEN challenge and their livers were examined 2 months later using histopathology and morphometry. Protein levels were assessed in serum using ELISA and in liver tissues using Western blot and immunohistochemistry (in-situ detection). Gene expression was quantified using real-time PCR. Results Romidepsin suppressed cancer progression. This effect was associated with decreased proliferation and increased apoptosis of cancer cells. The cell cycle regulator CK2a, the anti-inflammatory molecule PPAR-γ, and the tumor suppressors PTEN and CYLD were upregulated in treated HCC. By contrast, the expression of PI3K, NF-κB p65 and c-Jun was reduced. In line with this result, the levels of two major apoptosis regulators, ie, BAD and the multifunctional protein c-Met, were lower in the blood serum of treated mice compared to the untreated mice with HCC. Conclusion These findings suggest that Romidepsin, a drug currently used in the treatment of lymphoma, could also be considered in the management of early-stage HCC.

Neutrophil and T-cell recruitment contribute to hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury. The initial inflammatory response is orchestrated by Kupffer cells and liver sinusoid endothelial cells. However, other cell types, including γδ-Τ cells, seem to be key mediators in further inflammatory cell recruitment and proinflammatory cytokine release, including IL17a. In this study, we used an in vivo model of partial hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) to investigate the role of the γδ-Τ-cell receptor (γδTcR) and the role of IL17a in the pathogenesis of liver injury. Forty C57BL6 mice were subjected to 60 min of ischemia followed by 6 h of reperfusion (RN 6339/2/2016). Pretreatment with either anti-γδΤcR antibodies or anti-IL17a antibodies resulted in a reduction in histological and biochemical markers of liver injury as well as neutrophil and T-cell infiltration, inflammatory cytokine production and the downregulation of c-Jun and NF-κΒ. Overall, neutralizing either γδTcR or IL17a seems to have a protective role in liver IRI.

The aim of this study was to investigate sexual behavior, contraceptive use, risk factors as well as sources of sex information among first-year high-school students in Sweden. Secondly, to assess differences between genders and study programs as well as changes over a 40-year period. A repeated cross-sectional survey was conducted in two cities. A questionnaire comprising 77 items was used. The study population consisted of 415 students (63.4% females). The median age of sexual intercourse was 15 years. In total, 37% had had sexual intercourse, compared to 56.3% in 2009 and 45% in 1999 (p p = 0.019). The same extend of contraception use at first and latest intercourse was reported, compared to previous studies. Forty-nine percent were mostly informed about sex from the internet, while in previous years, magazines, family and youth clinics were the main information sources. Comparing over time, students were in general less sexually experienced and less engaged in non-penetrative sex and physical intimacy. These findings call for a new approach, when designing sex and relationship education and health-care counseling in adolescents.

The universality property plays an important role in the field of frames and the notion of saturated class of frames is combined with this property (see Dube et al. (Topology and its Applications 160, 2454–2464, 2013); Iliadis (Topology and its Applications 179, 99–110, 2015) and Iliadis (Topology and its Applications 201, 92–109, 18)). In this paper, we continue such a study, introducing and studying the notion of saturated class of bases for frames. Based on the notions of the small inductive dimension, frind, for frames, which is inserted in Georgiou et al. (2019), and the saturated class of bases, we define the base dimension like-function of the type frind for frames, and prove that in a class of bases which is characterized by this dimension there exist universal elements.

Antenatal depression affects ~9–19% of pregnant women and can exert persistent adverse effects on both mother and child. There is a need for a deeper understanding of antenatal depression mechanisms and the development of tools for reliable diagnosis and early identification of women at high risk. As the use of untargeted blood metabolomics in the investigation of psychiatric and neurological diseases has increased substantially, the main objective of this study was to investigate whether untargeted gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) plasma metabolomics in 45 women in late pregnancy, residing in Uppsala, Sweden, could indicate metabolic differences between women with and without depressive symptoms. Furthermore, seasonal differences in the metabolic profiles were explored. When comparing the profiles of cases with controls, independently of season, no differences were observed. However, seasonal differences were observed in the metabolic profiles of control samples, suggesting a favorable cardiometabolic profile in the summer vs. winter, as indicated by lower glucose and sugar acid concentrations and lactate to pyruvate ratio, and higher abundance of arginine and phosphate. Similar differences were identified between cases and controls among summer pregnancies, indicating an association between a stressed metabolism and depressive symptoms. No depression-specific differences were apparent among depressed and non-depressed women, in the winter pregnancies; this could be attributed to an already stressed metabolism due to the winter living conditions. Our results provide new insights into the pathophysiology of antenatal depression, and warrant further investigation of the use of metabolomics in antenatal depression in larger cohorts.

Maternal perinatal depression (PND), a common mental disorder with a prevalence of over 10%, is associated with long-term health risks for both mothers and offspring. This study aimed at describing characteristics related to background and lifestyle, pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum of different PND trajectories defined according to the onset of depressive symptoms. Participants were drawn from a large population-based cohort study in Uppsala, Sweden (n = 2,466). Five trajectory groups of depressive symptom onset were created using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale ≥13 (pregnancy) or ≥12 points (postpartum): (a) healthy (60.6%), (b) pregnancy depression (8.5%), (c) early postpartum onset (10.9%), (d) late postpartum onset (5.4%), and (e) chronic depression (14.6%). In multinomial logistic regressions, the associations between trajectories and the included characteristics were tested using the healthy trajectory as reference. Background characteristics (younger age, lower education, unemployment) were primarily associated with pregnancy depression and chronic depression. Characteristics associated with all PND trajectories were smoking prior to pregnancy, migraine, premenstrual mood symptoms, intimate partner violence, interpersonal trauma, negative delivery expectations, pregnancy nausea, and symphysiolysis. Nulliparity, instrumental delivery, or a negative delivery experience was associated with early postpartum onset. Postpartum factors (e.g., infantile colic, lack of sleep, low partner support, and bonding difficulties) were associated with early and late postpartum onset together with chronic depression. The findings suggest that different PND trajectories have divergent characteristics, which could be used to create individualized treatment options. To find the most predictive characteristics for different PND trajectories, studies with even larger and more diverse samples are warranted.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a detrimental health condition that affects 12% of new mothers. Despite negative effects on mothers’ and children’s health, many women do not receive adequate care. Preventive interventions are cost-efficient among high-risk women, but our ability to identify these is poor. We leveraged the power of clinical, demographic, and psychometric data to assess if machine learning methods can make accurate predictions of postpartum depression. Data were obtained from a population-based prospective cohort study in Uppsala, Sweden, collected between 2009 and 2018 (BASIC study, n = 4313). Sub-analyses among women without previous depression were performed. The extremely randomized trees method provided robust performance with highest accuracy and well-balanced sensitivity and specificity (accuracy 73%, sensitivity 72%, specificity 75%, positive predictive value 33%, negative predictive value 94%, area under the curve 81%). Among women without earlier mental health issues, the accuracy was 64%. The variables setting women at most risk for PPD were depression and anxiety during pregnancy, as well as variables related to resilience and personality. Future clinical models that could be implemented directly after delivery might consider including these variables in order to identify women at high risk for postpartum depression to facilitate individualized follow-up and cost-effectiveness.

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) is a common condition reported however inconclusively among pregnancies after assisted conception. The study objective was thus to explore whether NVP is associated to mode of conception or other in vitro fertilization (IVF)-related variables. This nested matched cohort study, originating from the BASIC-project, was conducted at the Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden between 2010 and 2016. IVF pregnancies (n = 210) and age and parity-matched women with spontaneous pregnancies (n = 420) comprised the study sample. The study outcome was self-reported NVP at gestational week 17. IVF treatment and pregnancy data were obtained after scrutinization of the medical records. NVP with or without medications was not associated with mode of conception (chi-square test, p = 0.889), even after adjusting for potential confounders. In a subgroup analysis among IVF pregnancies, NVP without medication was more frequently seen in the group who received cleavage stage embryos vs blastocysts (chi-square test, p = 0.019), exhibiting a marginally significant but strongly increased effect even after adjustment [crude RRR 3.82 (95% CI 1.23–11.92) and adjusted RRR 3.42 (95% CI 0.96–12.11)]. No difference in the rate of NVP with or without medication between women that underwent fresh and frozen/thawed embryo transfers as well as IVF or ICSI was observed. Conception through IVF is not associated with NVP. Transfer of a blastocyst may decrease the risk of developing NVP and further, large-scale prospective studies are required to validate this finding.

The aim of this population-based, longitudinal study was to assess the association between nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) and perinatal depressive symptoms. Pregnant women (N = 4239) undergoing routine ultrasound at gestational week (GW) 17 self-reported on NVP and were divided into those without nausea (G0), early (≤17 GW) nausea without medication (G1), early nausea with medication (G2), and prolonged (>17 GW) nausea (G3). The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at GW 17 and 32 (cut-off ≥13) and at six weeks postpartum (cut-off ≥12) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Main outcome measures were depressive symptoms at GW 32 and at six weeks postpartum. NVP was experienced by 80.7%. The unadjusted logistic regression showed a positive association between all three nausea groups and depressive symptoms at all time-points. After adjustment, significant associations with postpartum depressive symptoms remained for G3, compared to G0 (aOR = 1.66; 95% CI 1.1–2.52). After excluding women with history of depression, only the G3 group was at higher odds for postpartum depressive symptoms (aOR = 2.26; 95% CI 1.04–4.92). In conclusion, women with prolonged nausea have increased risk of depressive symptoms at six weeks postpartum, regardless of history of depression.

Background: To elucidate the expression of Aurora kinases (AURK) and the anticancer effects of pan-aurora kinase inhibitor Danusertib in hepatocarcinogenesis model in C56Bl6 mice. Methods: Thirty mice C56Bl6 were randomly divided into Group A or control, Group B animals who underwent experimental hepatocarcinogenesis with diethylnitrosamine (DEN), and Group C animals with DEN-induced hepatocarcinogenenesis that treated with pan-aurora kinase inhibitor Danusertib. Primary antibodies for immunochistochemistry (IHC) included rabbit antibodies against Ki-67, DKK1, INCENP, cleaved caspase-3, NF-kappa B p65, c-Jun, beta-catenin. Hepatocyte growth factor receptor (C-MET/HGFR) and Bcl-2 antagonist of cell death ( BAD) serum levels were determined using a quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. Results: Inhibition of AURK reduced the number of DEN-induced liver tumours. Apoptosis and proliferation was very low in both DEN-induced and anti-AURK groups respectively. The hepatocellular adenoma cells of DEN-treated mice uniformly had ample nuclear INCENP whereas in anti-AURK markedly decreased. Expression of beta-catenin, NF-kB and c-Jun did not differ in liver tumors of both AURK -depleted and non-depleted mice. Conclusions: Depletion of AURK reduced the number of DEN-induced hepatic tumours. However, their size did not differ significantly between the groups.

To study whether conception by means of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is associated with maternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy or postpartum.Longitudinal observational study.University hospital.A total of 3,283 women with singleton pregnancies receiving antenatal care and delivering in Uppsala from 2010 to 2015.A web-based self-administered structured questionnaire including sociodemographic, clinical and pregnancy-related items, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was delivered at 17 and 32 gestational weeks and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum.Prevalence of significant depressive symptoms (EPDS ≥12) and EPDS scores.A total of 167 women (5%) had conceived via IVF and 3,116 (95%) had a spontaneous pregnancy. IVF mothers were more frequently ≥35 years of age (46.1% vs. 22.6%) and primiparous (71.7% vs. 49.9%) and had a higher cesarean delivery rate (22.4% vs. 14.2%). Demographic and clinical characteristics were otherwise similar between the two groups. Significant depressive symptoms were reported by 12.8%, 12.4%, 13.8%, and 11.9% of women at 17 and 32 gestational weeks and 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum, respectively. The prevalence of depressive symptoms and the EPDS scores during pregnancy and postpartum were similar between women conceiving spontaneously or through IVF. The mode of conception was not associated with significant depressive symptoms at any time point, even when adjusting for several possible confounders in multivariable logistic regression analysis.Despite the psychologic distress characterizing subfertility and its treatment, conception by means of IVF is not associated with maternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy or postpartum.

The problem of the existence of universal elements in the class of all topological groups of weight ≤τ ≠ ω remains open. In this paper, it is proved that for many classes of topological groups there are so-called continuously containing spaces. Let 𝕊 be a saturated class of completely regular spaces of weight ≤τ and 𝔾 be the subclass of elements of 𝕊 that are topological groups. In the present paper we consider so-called saturated classes of frames of weight less than or equal to a given infinite cardinal τ . Such classes are saturated by universal elements. We consider three kinds of saturated classes. The saturated classes of any considered kind have the following basic property: the intersection of not more than τ many saturated classes is also a saturated class and therefore in this intersection there are also universal elements. We prove that the classes RegFrm ( τ ) of regular and CRegFrm ( τ ) of completely regular frames of weight ≤ τ are saturated classes in any of these kinds. This fact implies that in the classes RegFrm ( τ , μ ) and CRegFrm ( τ , μ ) of regular and completely regular frames, respectively, of weight ≤ τ and decomposition invariant (see [10] ) μ ≤ τ there are universal elements.

In the paper it is proved that there exists a continuous surjective mapping F : X → Y , where X and Y are separable complete metric spaces of transfinite dimension ind less than or equal to α d ∈ ω + ∪ { ∞ } and α r ∈ ω + ∪ { ∞ } , respectively, such that, for each continuous surjective mapping f : X → Y , where X and Y are compact metric spaces of transfinite dimension ind less than or equal to α d and α r , respectively, there are isometries i : X → X and j : Y → Y satisfying the relation F ∘ i = j ∘ f . This result remains true if we suppose that, for each mapping f : X → Y , Y coincides with a fixed separable complete metric space Y and that the corresponding mapping j : Y → Y is the identity.

We investigate the geometry of the family M of isometry classes of compact metric spaces, endowed with the Gromov–Hausdorff metric. We show that sufficiently small neighborhoods of generic finite spaces in the subspace of all finite metric spaces with the same number of points are isometric to some neighborhoods in the space R ∞ N , i.e., in the space R N with the norm ‖ ( x 1 , … , x N ) ‖ = max i | x i | . As a corollary, we get that each finite metric space can be isometrically embedded into M in such a way that its image belongs to a subspace consisting of all finite metric spaces with the same number k of points. If the initial space has n points, then one can take k as the least possible integer with n ≤ k ( k − 1 ) / 2 .

Women's levels of resilience and attitudes towards perineal lacerations vary greatly. Some women see them as part of the birthing process, while others react with anger, depressed mood or even thoughts of self-harm. A previous study has reported increased risk of postpartum depressive (PPD) symptoms in women with severe perineal lacerations. The aim of this study was to assess the association between severe obstetric perineal lacerations and PPD. A secondary objective was to assess this association among women with low resilience.Nested cohort study.Uppsala, Sweden.Vaginally delivered women with singleton pregnancies (n = 2990).The main exposure was obstetric perineal lacerations. Resilience was assessed in gestational week 32 using the Swedish version of the Sense of Coherence Scale. A digital acyclic graph was used to identify possible confounders and mediators. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). A sub-analysis was run after excluding women with normal or high resilience.Postpartum depression, assessed with the Depression Self-Reporting Scale, completed at 6 weeks postpartum. There was no significant association between severe obstetric perineal lacerations and PPD at 6 weeks postpartum. However, a significant association was found between severe lacerations and PPD in women with low resilience (OR = 4.8, 95% CI 1.2-20), persisting even after adjusting for confounding factors.Healthcare professionals might need to identify women with low resilience, as they are at increased risk for PPD after a severe perineal laceration.Severe perineal lacerations associated with postpartum depression in women with low resilience in a Swedish cohort.

The Transgender Congruence Scale (TCS) is a non-binary tool used in Sweden for gender dysphoria (GD) assessment; however, its Swedish version has not been validated. To investigate the psychometric properties of the TCS, its capacity to distinguish individuals with GD and its concurrent validity compared to other scales. Patients with GD (n = 135) and controls (n = 443) filled in a questionnaire containing sociodemographic questions, the TCS, the Utrecht Gender Dysphoria Scale (UGDS), and the Gender Identity/Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults (GIDYQ-AA). TCS had good discriminatory validity and internal consistency. Patients with GD, stratified by birth-assigned sex, had lower TCS scores compared to controls. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the two-factor model of the TCS. Multiple-group CFA suggested measurement invariance between birth-assigned sexes and configural invariance between patients with GD and controls. Area under the ROC curve for birth-assigned males was 0.991 and for females 0.994. A TCS mean value of three provided sensitivity 94.3% and 95.1% as well as specificity 98.6% and 98% for aM and aF, respectively. The TCS was significantly correlated to UGDS and GIDYQ-AA. The TCS may be a valuable tool in the clinical assessment of individuals with GD.

Individual differences in the response of the stress system to hormonal changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period render some women susceptible to developing depression. The present study sought to investigate peripartum depression and stress hormones in relation to stress-related genotypes. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess peripartum depressive symptoms in a sample of 1629 women, followed from pregnancy week seventeen to six months postpartum. Genotypes of ninety-four haplotype-tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in sixteen genes of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis pathway were analyzed and data on psychosocial and demographic factors was collected. In sub-studies, salivary cortisol awakening response in gestational week 35-39, salivary evening cortisol levels in gestational week 36 and postpartum week 6, and blood cortisol and cortisone levels in gestational week 35-39 were analyzed. SNP-set kernel association tests were performed at the gene-level, considering psychosocial and demographic factors, followed by post-hoc analyses of SNPs of significant genes. Statistically significant findings at the 0.05 p-level included SNPs in the hydroxysteroid 11-beta dehydrogenase 1 (HSD11B1) gene in relation to self-rated depression scores in postpartum week six among all participants, and serpin family A member 6 (SERPINA6) gene at the same time-point among women with de novo onset of postpartum depression. SNPs in these genes also associated with stress hormone levels during pregnancy. The present study adds knowledge to the neurobiological basis of peripartum depression by systematically assessing SNPs in stress-regulatory genes and stress-hormone levels in a population-based sample of women. BACKGROUND: Peripartum depression is a common cause of pregnancy- and postpartum-related morbidity. The production of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) from the placenta alters the profile of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis hormones and may be associated with postpartum depression. The purpose of this study was to assess, in nondepressed pregnant women, the possible association between CRH levels in pregnancy and depressive symptoms postpartum. METHODS: A questionnaire containing demographic data and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was filled in gestational weeks 17 and 32, and 6 week postpartum. Blood samples were collected in week 17 for assessment of CRH. A logistic regression model was constructed, using postpartum EPDS score as the dependent variable and log-transformed CRH levels as the independent variable. Confounding factors were included in the model. Subanalyses after exclusion of study subjects with preterm birth, newborns small for gestational age (SGA), and women on corticosteroids were performed. RESULTS: Five hundred thirty-five women without depressive symptoms during pregnancy were included. Logistic regression showed an association between high CRH levels in gestational week 17 and postpartum depressive symptoms, before and after controlling for several confounders (unadjusted OR = 1.11, 95% CI 1.01-1.22; adjusted OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.02-1.26; per 0.1 unit increase in log CRH). Exclusion of women with preterm birth and newborns SGA as well as women who used inhalation corticosteroids during pregnancy did not alter the results. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests an association between high CRH levels in gestational week 17 and the development of postpartum depressive symptoms, among women without depressive symptoms during pregnancy.

High cholesterol is one of the risk factors for atherogenesis, leading to oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The focus of this study was to evaluate the role and the pathways of action of a natural antioxidant, resveratrol, in asymptomatic hypercholesterolemic (AHC) individuals. Forty healthy AHCs and normocholesterolemics (NCs) participated in the study. They received random-order resveratrol and placebo capsules for four weeks. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), vitamin E and total cholesterol (TC) were measured at baseline and at the end of each intervention. Resveratrol provided a direct antioxidant effect in healthy NC individuals, but in AHC individuals, with a higher demand for antioxidant activity due to higher cholesterol levels, it acted by facilitating an increase in vitamin E. Our findings suggest that resveratrol acts synergistically with other antioxidants against oxidative stress and highlights the importance of hypercholesterolemic individuals consuming natural antioxidants instead of medications to reduce the risk of CVD, while the situation is still reversible.

Changes in fatty acid (FA) profiles and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) concentrations of ovine milk produced by lactating ewes of the Karagouniko sheep breed, fed on grazing pastures in December and April, and Kefalotyri cheese made from this milk, were determined. Levels of saturated FAs (SFAs) decreased, but monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs), including CLA, increased in milk in April. However, saturated fatty acid stearic acid (C18:0) levels showed a significant increase (P 0.05) in FA and CLA levels during cheese making of ovine milk were observed, but CLA levels of Kefalotyri cheese were significantly (P

Seasonal variations have recently been described in biomarkers, cell types, and gene expression associated with the immune system, but so far no studies have been conducted among women in the peripartum period. It is of note that pregnancy complications and outcomes, as well as autoimmune diseases, have also been reported to exhibit seasonal fluctuations. We report here a clear-cut seasonal pattern of 23 inflammatory markers, analysed using proximity-extension assay technology, in pregnant women. The inflammatory markers generally peaked in the spring and had a trough in the autumn. During the postpartum period we found seasonality in one inflammatory marker, namely monocyte chemotactic protein 4 (MCP-4). Our findings suggest that seasonal variations in peripheral inflammatory markers are only observed during pregnancy. The results of this study could be valuable to professionals working within the field of immunology-related areas, and provide insight for the understanding of obstetric complications.

In this paper we introduce the notion of an action of a space continuously containing topological groups on a space and prove that if for each element G of a given collection G of topological groups of weight ≤τ an action F G on a space X of weight ≤τ (the same for all groups) is given, then there exists a continuously containing space T of weight ≤τ for this collection and an action F of T on X such that F G = F | G × X for each G ∈ G

Introduction: Postpartum depression predisposes to maternal affective and somatic disorders. It is important to identify which women are at an increased risk of subsequent morbidity and would benefit from an intensified follow-up. Self-harm thoughts (SHTs), with or without other depressive symptomatology, might have prognostic value for maternal health beyond the postpartum period. Aim: This study is to investigate the somatic and psychiatric morbidity of postpartum women with SHTs, with or without other depressive symptoms, over a 7-year follow-up period. Materials and methods: The subjects for this study are derived from a population based Swedish cohort of women who gave birth at Uppsala University Hospital (May 2006-June 2007) and who answered the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 5 days, 6 weeks, and 6 months postpartum. Three groups were included: women reporting SHTs (SHT group, n = 107) on item 10 of the EPDS; women reporting depressive symptoms, i.e., EPDS >= 12 at 6 weeks and/or 6 months postpartum, without SHTs (DEP group, n = 94); and randomly selected controls screening negatively for postpartum depression (CTL group, n = 104). The number of diagnostic codes for somatic and psychiatric morbidity according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems system, and the number of medical interventions were retrieved from medical records over 7 years following childbirth and were used as the outcome measures, together with any prescription of antidepressants and sick leave during the follow-up. Results: The SHT group had the highest psychiatric morbidity of all groups and more somatic morbidity than controls. Affective disorders were more common in the SHT and the DEP groups compared with controls, as well as antidepressant prescriptions and sick leave. One-fifth of women with SHTs did not screen positive for depressive symptoms; nevertheless, they had more somatic and psychiatric morbidity than the control group. Conclusion: Women reporting thoughts of self-harm in the postpartum period are at an increased risk of somatic and psychiatric morbidity during a follow-up of 7 years after delivery, and this increased risk may not be fully attributed to depressive symptoms. Results underline the importance of screening for self-harm symptoms postpartum and point to a need for individualized follow-up. Stavros I. Iliadis and Alkistis Skalkidou contributed equally to this work

Summary Background & aims The role of red wine in cardiovascular risk prevention has been documented by several epidemiological studies in patients and normocholesterolemic healthy individuals. However, it is unclear whether hypercholesterolemic individuals free of cardiovascular disease would equally benefit from moderate red wine consumption to prevent atherosclerosis and the development of cardiovascular disease. Methods Forty (40) healthy male and female volunteers were recruited, divided into 2 age-adjusted groups according to their total cholesterol levels; in asymptomatic hypercholesterolemics (AHC), and normocholesterolemics (NC). Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC), Lipid profile, Vitamin E, and cardiovascular risk indexes (Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL)/High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) and Vitamin E/Total Cholesterol (TC) were evaluated in the blood serum of all subjects prior to and 1 month after once daily red wine consumption as well as prior to and after being given a placebo drink following a 1 month wash out period. Results TAC significantly increased after the intervention in all subjects in AHC and NC group with a mean difference (post-pre) 1.78 mmol/l and 0.87 mmol/l, respectively. Vitamin E significantly increased especially in AHC group (13.1% increase) compared to NC group (5.41%) after red wine consumption, with higher increase in the AHC group. There was marginal significant treatment effect (decrease) on fasting LDL/HDL ratio (p = 0.05) and a statistically significant increase on Vitamin E/TC ratio relative to drinking placebo for NC (p Conclusions Asymptomatic hypercholesterolemic (AHC) individuals are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease as presented by high cholesterol levels in addition to the presence of low baseline serum α-tocopherol (vitamin E) concentrations, leading to atherosclerosis. AHC individuals following an early dietary intervention, seem likely to reduce the risk factors for cardiovascular disease by increasing circulating concentrations of TAC and α-tocopherol (vitamin E) so as vitamin E/TC ratio increases.

Treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) has been associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, but causality remains unclear. While placental CRH production is correlated with gestational length and preterm birth, it has been difficult to establish if psychological stress or mental health problems are associated with increased CRH levels. This study compared second trimester CRH serum concentrations in pregnant women on SSRI treatment (n=207) with untreated depressed women (n=56) and controls (n=609). A secondary aim was to investigate the combined effect of SSRI treatment and CRH levels on gestational length and risk for preterm birth. Women on SSRI treatment had significantly higher second trimester CRH levels than controls, and untreated depressed women. CRH levels and SSRI treatment were independently associated with shorter gestational length. The combined effect of SSRI treatment and high CRH levels yielded the highest risk estimate for preterm birth. SSRI treatment during pregnancy is associated with increased CRH levels. However, the elevated risk for preterm birth in SSRI users appear not to be mediated by increased placental CRH production, instead CRH appear as an independent risk factor for shorter gestational length and preterm birth.

In this paper we prove that in the classes of all regular frames and all completely regular frames there are universal elements giving an affirmative answer to Problems 1.4 (1, 2) of [1] . To obtain these results we simplify the method of construction of universal elements in the class of all frames given in [1] and then use it for the considered classes.

In this paper, we consider spaces having the so-called property of f -distances, where f is a positive decreasing function defined on ω such that f ( n ) ≤ 1 2 n . It is proved that for well-known classes S of separable metric spaces (in [2] they are called isometrically ω -saturated classes of spaces) the following is true: for a given collection S of elements of S with the property of f -distances, there exists an element of S with the property of g -distances containing isometrically each element of S , where g is the function on ω for which g ( n ) = f ( n + 2 ) , n ∈ ω .

Recent evidence has suggested that downregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway may contribute to the development and growth of HCC. Consequently, elements of this pathway have begun to emerge as potential targets for improving outcomes of anti-HCC. Thus, the present study sought to examine the effects of Wnt-1 blockade using the classical diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced chemical carcinogenesis mouse model of HCC. The depletion of Wnt-1 using neutralizing antisera was done for ten consecutive days at the age of 9 months and mice were examined for the following 20 days. At that time, DEN-treated mice had multiple variably-sized hepatic cell adenomas. Anti-Wnt-1 was particularly potent in suppressing the expression of critical elements of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, such as β-catenin and Frizzled-1 receptor, however, not Dickkopf-related protein 1. This effect co-existed with the suppression of Cyclin D1, FOXM1, NF-κΒ and c-Jun commensurate with proliferation and apoptosis blockade in hepatocellular adenomas, and reduced Bcl-2 and c-Met in the serum of mice. Nonetheless, tumor size and multiplicity were found to be unaffected, suggesting that apoptosis may be equally important to proliferation in the context of counteracting DEN induced hepatocellular adenomas of mice.

Ωστόσο, η περιεκτικότητα σε λιπαρά του ανοιξιάτικου γάλακτος ήταν χαμηλότερη (P0,05) τόσο κατά τη διάρκεια του χειμώνα όσο και κατά τη διάρκεια της άνοιξης, ενώ η περιεκτικότητα σε πολυακόρεστα λιπαρά οξέα μεταβλήθηκε σημαντικά (P, The aim of this work was to evaluate the changes in fatty acids (FAs) profile and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) concentration of milk from grazing ewes in winter (December and January) and spring (April and May) in Thessaly, central Greece. No significant changes (P>0.05) in the physicochemical properties (pH and protein, lactose and total solids content) of winter and spring milk were observed. However, the fat content of spring milk was lower (P0.05) during winter neither during spring, whereas the polyunsaturated FAs content was significantly changed (P
