Since the summer of 2015, many islands in the Aegean received an unprecedented wave of refugees and migrants, which created a series of immediate, short term and long term social, humanitarian and economic issues (UNHCR. This paper aims to study and analyse the effects of refugees' inflows and the implications of the volunteers' presence on the islands of Chios and Lesvos (Greece) through a primary research, as well as the reactions of the stakeholders involved. A primary qualitative research with the use of semi-structured interviews has been conducted between October 2016 and March 2017. The sample of the research was selected by random sampling and it involved 122 participants who were separated in two groups: a) representatives of state bodies and local authorities as well as local entrepreneurs and b) independent volunteers and members of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO). The main findings of the primary research showed a negative attitude of the local stakeholders as to the effects of the refugees' inflows on the economic and social life of both islands and, therefore, on tourism. The research recorded a positive attitude towards the islands and their local societies on behalf of the volunteers and NGO members, as well as their intention to revisit the islands in the future as tourists. In this paper the implementation of Human Resources Management (HRM) practices related to hospitality selection, staffing and job design is to be explored according to the hotels' business strategy categorization. The HRM practices are also tested for any positive effects on specific performance variables. Schuler's and Jackson's (1987) typology was used to capture the strategic groups (Othman and Ismail, 1996; Wei, 2006; Liao, 2005; Kelliher and Perret, 2001) in the hospitality sector (Tavitiyaman et al., 2012; Alleyne et al., 2006; Hogue, 2000). HRM practices were adopted by Kim Hogue's (2000) research in Great Britain's hospitality and tertiary sector, while the selection of variables measuring the hotels' performance was based on relevant scientific literature (Tzafrir, 2006; Liao, 2005; Tseng and Lee, 2009; Azmi, 2010; Stavrou et al., 2007; Wang and Syu, 2008). The survey's outcomes highlight the need of hotels' to focus on the proper selection and staffing systems-procedures. The objective of this paper is to examine the extent and special characteristics of the involvement of human resources, working in 4 and 5 star hotels, in adapting Total Quality Management. The research, which was conducted in hotels located in the city of Athens, revealed that hotels aspire to quality and customer satisfaction; still, quality has not been universally defined and can be conceived differently. The research also revealed a limited use of Total Quality Management models. Despite the fact that city hotels are aware of the significance and role of HR for the achievement of particular quality parameters related to their services, they still do not focus sufficiently on training and motivating their staff in issues related to quality, as quality can be perceived for each individual field.
