The aim of this paper is to analyze the formative and evaluative activities involving statistical graphs in the new textbooks for Chilean rural multigrade education. The methodology is qualitative, at a descriptive level and uses the content analysis technique. The sample is made up of the six primary education textbooks distributed by the Ministry of Education for rural multigrade schools. The results show the predominance of the bar chart, semiotic level 3, the task of calculating and the personal context in both types of activities, although with respect to the reading level, it is evident that level 4 predominates in the formative activities and level 2 in the evaluative ones. According to the results, it is recommended to incorporate graphs proposed by the curricular guidelines of the Ministry of Education, which are absent in textbooks as well as to include evaluative activities that require reflection on the nature of the data, context, representation and conclusions obtained from them.

A statistical graph can offer an alternative compelling approach to statistical thinking that focuses on important concepts rather than procedural formulas. Nowadays, visualizing multidimensional/multivariate data is essential but can also be challenging. In sport analytics, the exploration and descriptive analysis of data using visualization techniques has increased in recent years to, for example, describe possible patterns and uncertainty of player performance. These visualization techniques have been used so far with different purposes by various professionals in the sport industry, such as managers, coaches, scouters, technical staff, journalists, and researchers. The abuse of graphs, such as the radar plot, and their frequent misinterpretation in the world of sports and possible implications for coaching decisions has led us to create more informative and accurate visualizations. Here, we propose new, more educational visualizations we have termed violinboxplots and enhanced radar plot for their use in the sports analytics and other fields. These allow us to visualize, besides distribution and statistical summaries, the extreme data values that can be fundamental in performance studies and allow us to benchmark. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ikaselkar (Baga-Biga) and Erein editorials’ Elementary Education math textbooks are studied. The following was analyzed for each graph: the type of graph, the type of activity, the reading level and the semiotic complexity. In both editorials the bar graphs and the calculating and completing activities prevail. As regards to the level of readability, only activities reading the data and reading between the data appeared in Ikaselkar. Erein, on the other hand, adds some level of reading activities of level reading beyond the data (10.64 %). In terms of semiotic difficulties, Erein attributes the maximum weight to level data distribution representation (64.29 %), whereas Ikaselkar also offers space to level representation of a data set without representing the distribution in an attempt to reinforce the idea of a statistical variable.

Context is a key element in statistics education. The objective of this study is to examine the capacity of 14- and 15-year-old students to work with real data, analyse statistical graphs and frequency tables and interpret statistical data in its context. The results of the descriptive, exploratory analysis show that most students were correctly able to analyse and interpret data presented through statistical graphs and tables. However, some students had difficulties when it came to identifying the represented variables. More difficulties arose when calculating and interpreting means and medians — generally produced from the use of class midpoints — and making decisions. Students made little use of the context the data were presented in. Results reinforce the importance of using context in the teaching of statistics, encouraging justified decision-making. MATHEMATICS education ,STUDENT teachers ,MATHEMATICS teachers ,DATA analysis ,GRAPH theory - Abstract
Statistical graphs are often used by mass media to convey information to the community. Hence, it is a requirement for pupils in school to understand and apply various statistical skills to help them interpret the statistical graph. Teachers must play a very important role in ensuring that the student understands and are able to interpret various types of statistical graphs by applying an appropriate statistical skill. However, an outlier in a set of data always causes problems to the graph reader. An outlier can cause serious problems in statistical analyses. An outlier lies at an abnormal distance from other values in a random sample from a population. Therefore, this study looked at how prospective Mathematics teachers interpreted and build their perceptions towards an outlier in two types of statistical graphs by using an in-depth interview with all of the participants of this study. There were two types of statistical graphs used in this study, which are frequency table and a bar chart. Based on the findings obtained from this study, five prospective teachers involved in this study agreed that the outlier had various effects on the distribution of data for the entire data represented by the frequency table. This issue will be discussed in detail in this report. Hopefully, the findings from this study will give a clear description on how far the participants of this study perceived the role and effects of outliers in a set of data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to analyze an activity built with a focus on the interpretation of statistical graphs based on themes that deal with the intersectionality of sex and race, considering economic and social aspects of the cities of Salvador-BA and São Paulo-SP, between 2011 and 2017. The importance of this theme is to present discussions regarding racial inequality, especially of black women, in the labor market and its visibility is relevant considering the persistence of structural racism in different economic sectors, as well as in the absence of social equity for the black population. A Teaching Case with a qualitative approach is presented, in order to critically and reflexively analyze the statistical data presented through national research bodies and institutions. The data were used to build activities for high school students in basic education to discuss, based on graphic analysis, the locus occupied by black women in Brazilian society, taking as a sample the cities already mentioned, in addition to the regions of the country in which they are located. Therefore, bringing them into this discussion becomes relevant, since the problem of structural racism is still visible in society, particularly in the labor market, the focus of this study. Thus, discussing this theme is necessary so that students can analyze and understand, from a critical and reflective look and through the interpretation of statistical graphs of data on education and income, the place of black women in society.

ELEMENTARY school teachers , *GRAPHIC methods in statistics , *KNOWLEDGE graphs , *TEACHING experience , *PRIMARY education - Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and level of statistical graph reading skills of elementary school teachers. This study used a mixed approach, was descriptive, and the content analysis method was applied. The sample included 21 participants, 19 women and 2 men. The teaching experience mean was equal to 11.2 years. An instrument with three items related to the reading of statistical graphs was applied. The teachers surveyed showed quantification and calculation errors, poor understanding of graph core components, difficulties reading and analyzing graphs, and limited skills to explain the visual effects produced by scale modifications. In conclusion, the elementary school teachers surveyed lacked both knowledge of statistical graph core components and skills to analyze statistical graphs, which is a common and recurrent subject in the primary education curriculum. - Abstract
International forums emphasize the need to promote statistical literacy in the classroom and, particularly, the reading of data-based information represented by statistical graphs. Because the prospective teachers' professional practice will depend on current knowledge and skills in reading, interpreting and arguing statistical information, an evaluation is required to indicate whether an educational reinforcement in their current training is pertinent. This work assesses the graphic reading level of the information represented by media statistical graphs in 653 primary education prospective teachers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to analyse the results of GPEMAR's research on the interpretation of statistical graphs. For this, monographs and articles by members of the group and in coauthorship were analysed by a qualitative study based on the triangulation of the investigations, composing a mosaic of research works. The studies started from a doctoral project, especially on the interpretation of the graphs, including the levels of understanding and socio-cultural aspects. The results show that the students usually did not have difficulties reading the data. At the reading between the data level, the types of comparison, combination, and equalisation were detailed here, with other types being found. Also, when the sociocultural aspects were incorporated into the interpretation of the graphs at the read between the data and read beyond the data levels, we identified that the students had better conditions to succeed in their understandings, different from what is usually highlighted in the literature, besides qualitative analysis, especially when students find it difficult to understand the graphs. Finally, we point out that reflections on the importance of prior mathematical and statistical knowledge and studies on the level of reading beyond data must be expanded, both articulated with the socio-cultural aspects and with the skills of statistical education, broadening the reflections on the mosaic of GPEMAR research. STATISTICS education , *MATHEMATICS education , *COVID-19 pandemic , *MATHEMATICS teachers - Abstract
In this paper, we argue that statistical sense is particularly needed in the COVID-19 era, when we receive continuous information about the evolution of the pandemic through a wide variety of statistical data, graphs, and tables. Citizens need to confront the arguments based on statistical information to understand decisions that may change every few days. Moreover, students should have adequate statistical and graphical training at any stage of their education to become critical and reflective citizens when facing this type of information. In this paper, we examine some examples of different ways in which this graphic information is distributed in different media and analyse the components of statistical sense needed by students to understand and make decisions based on them. We also argue the need to complement the teaching of statistics with the study of a more complete range of graphs than those included in the curriculum. Finally, we propose that these graphs provided by the government, media, and international organizations are used by teachers as didactic resources to increase the statistical sense in their students. 24. Three Essays on the Consequences of Transparency
- Author

- Abstract
This dissertation comprises three essays which empirically investigate consequences of transparency. The first essay investigates how transparency, demanded by the government as a customer of firms, affects firms’ financial reporting. It provides evidence that, relative to firms without government customers, government suppliers have a higher quality of financial reporting. Findings indicate that government procurement requirements, which are linked to internal control over financial reporting, can positively affect the external information environment of firms. The second essay examines how managers react to a stricter transparency mandate in pension accounting, if this mandate increases the expected volatility of balance sheet items. Managers of affected firms change decisions on pension plans which mitigate volatility and in addition, affected firms exhibit less volatile accruals but more volatile discretionary real actions suggesting managers reduce volatility in balance sheets. Findings imply that a transparency mandate in pension accounting may have (unintended) consequences for managerial decision-making if the mandate reveals more economic volatility on balance sheets. The third essay studies how (data-transparently) researchers visualize their quantitative findings and how this affects the impact of academic work. It finds that, compared to articles in field-specific economics journals, articles in economics journals with a broader audience use more figures than tables and that articles visualizing (data-transparently) with figures receive more citations. An online experiment, which manipulates how a fictive study visualizes scientific results, finds that participants assess the internal validity of research as being higher and are more willing to cite research if it visualizes results data-transparently. The findings imply that (data-transparent) visualization can enhance the impact of academic work., Die Dissertation besteht aus drei Aufsätzen, die die Auswirkungen von Transparenz untersuchen.

The aim of this research work is to develop a teaching activity articulation strategy between mathematics and technology and computer science subjects, to improve the ability to interpret information in frequency tables and common statistical graphics among eighth-grade students of the Genaro León Educational Institution. This project makes use of the descriptive method, applying qualitative and quantitative techniques, using an inductive method, which allows starting from the observation of particular phenomena or situations and framing the research problem towards the general. Four phases were established for the investigative process. Firstly, the diagnostic phase, in which the problem was contextualized, defining and concretizing the idea. Then, a phase of theoretical foundation preparation, followed by the methodological design phase where the sample selection and instrument elaboration are carried out. Finally, the phase of analysis and interpretation of the information, where data is collected and analyzed, resulting in a high percentage of low reading and interpretation of frequency tables and statistical graphics in the mathematics area by eighth-grade students. As a solution to the problem raised, a teaching activity articulation strategy is implemented between the mathematics and technology and computer science areas. For this, a series of exercises on reading and interpretation of statistical data is developed in the computer classroom, obtaining a good reception towards teaching statistics through a teaching activity articulation strategy based on the use of Excel. As a result, a positive response is found in the statistics teaching process, which means that the proposed teaching activity articulation strategy allows students to access and use technological tools that facilitate the reading and interpretation of information in frequency tables and trend statistical graphics. In the first half of XIXth century in Bohemia, statistics had been developed in the understanding of the school of Achenwall and Schlözer. Its main exponent there was G. N. Schnabel (1791-1857), who was a professor of statistics at the university in Prague. This article is about all the main statistical publications of Schnabel, and demonstrates their gradual modernization, usage of comprehensive tables, and basic statistical analysis according to the patterns of political arithmetic and statistical graphs. Schnabel's activity was the culmination, but also the final stage, of the development of traditional university statistics in Bohemia. It also mentions the activity of Schnabel in organizing official statistics in Bohemia, his disputes with Austrian censorship and the later controversies in the matter of national statistics. - Abstract
The purpose of this research is to analyze the intended meaning of tasks involving statistical graphs in mathematics textbooks of Primary Education in Mexico. For this purpose, theoretical and meth-odological elements of the Ontosemiotic Approach (OSA) are used, specifically, two analysis levels for mathematical activity: 1) phenomenological-anthropological and 2) ontosemiotic, which allow the study of the primary objects involved in the tasks. The results indicate that four types of problem situations are presented in the textbooks: 1) translating statistical tables into statistical graphs; 2) reading data in sta-tistical graphs; 3) reading within the datain statistical graphs; and 4) reading beyond the data in statistical graphs.

Because the prospective teachers’ professional practice will depend on current knowledge and skills in reading, interpreting and arguing statistical information, an evaluation is required to indicate whether an educational reinforcement in their current training is pertinent. This work assesses the graphic reading level of the information represented by media statistical graphs in 653 primary education prospective teachers.

- Abstract
The aim of this research was to analyze the variables characterizing the statistical graphs and re-lated tasks in Costa Rica secondary education textbooks. We first examine 143 graphs presented in three editorials for grades 7 to 9 (from 13 to 15 years old), and study the type of graph, its semiotic complexity, and the context of the data represented. We then study 340 tasks related to these graphs, by analyzing the reading level required, purpose of the graph within the task and type of task. We compare the results with other statistical graph research carried out in primary education textbooks. Compared to the previous educational stage, new graphics are introduced; there is a greater presence of the higher level of semiotic complexity and the school context decreases, giving more weight to the scientific one. Regarding the tasks, the weight of reading decreases, with new tasks appearing, the main purpose is analysis and there is not much difference in the reading level required in primary and secondary education., El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar las variables que caracterizan los gráficos estadísticos y las tareas relacionadas en los libros de texto de educación secundaria en Costa Rica.

- Abstract
One of the main characteristics that determine the degree of statistical literacy becomes evident when the disciplinary knowledge associated with it is transferred and applied to external contexts to mathematics. This study is focused on analysing which are the previous statistical knowledge and selection criteria regarding graphics of the students of the Degree of Early Childhood Education and how these vary when group mediation is proposed in a STEAM context. After the mixed design study with 25 participants, the low importance they give to statistics in STEAM contexts has been confirmed, the clear confusion about what are statistical graphics and the relative influence of group dynamics in these two aspects, showing a partial improvement in their statistical sense., Una de las características fundamentales que determinan el nivel de sentido estadístico se manifiesta cuando el conocimiento disciplinar asociado es transferido y aplicado a contextos a priori ajenos a la matemática.

To monitor occurrence trends and identify clusters of nosocomial infection (NI) using statistical process control (SPC) charts. METHODS: Between January 1998 and December 2000 nosocomial infection occurrence was evaluated in a cohort of 460 patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of a university hospital, according to the concepts and criteria proposed by the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance System of the Centers for Disease Control, in the United States. Graphs were plotted using Poisson statistical distribution, including four horizontal lines: center line (CL), upper warning limit (UWL) and upper control limit (UCL). The CL was the arithmetic mean NI rate calculated for the studied period; UWL and UCL were drawn at 2 and 3 standard deviations above average NI rates, respectively. Clusters were identified when NI rates remained above UCL. RESULTS: Mean NI incidence was 20 per 1,000 patient days. One urinary tract infection cluster was identified in July 2000, with an infection rate of 63 per 1,000 patient days, exceeding UCL and characterizing a period of epidemic. CONCLUSIONS: The use of SPC charts for controlling endemic levels of NI, through both global and site-specific evaluation, allowed for the identification of uncommon variations in NI rates, such as outbreaks and epidemics, and for their distinction from the natural variations observed in NI occurrence rates, without the need for calculations and hypothesis testing.

Teaching statistics in the early years requires that teachers at this school level develop skills to analyze small collections of data. Given a collection of quantitative data (12 observations), in this paper we looked at how students and prospective primary school teachers select and make appropriate graphs and identify and determine statistical measures suitable for summarizing the data, including the interpretation of the third quartile. The study involved 50 students who were attending the 2nd year of the Basic Education Bachelor’s program at a university in northern Portugal. The collected data correspond to the answers given by the students in a formal examination in a Probability and Statistics course. An analysis of the answers showed that the students had difficulties in both the selection and application of statistical methods, which were more pronounced when they had to identify the appropriate graphs to represent the data and to determine the quartiles and to interpret the third quartile, and less pronounced in the case of determining other statistical measures., O ensino da Estatística nos primeiros anos de escolaridade requer que os professores desse nível escolar desenvolvam competências de análise de pequenas coleções de dados.

- Abstract
The data were used to build activities for high school students in basic education to discuss, based on graphic analysis, the locus occupied by black women in Brazilian society, taking as a sample the cities already mentioned , in addition to the regions of the country in which they are located. Therefore, bringing them into this discussion becomes relevant, since the problem of structural racism is still visible in society, particularly in the labor market, the focus of this study. Thus, discussing this theme is necessary so that students can analyze and understand, from a critical and reflective look and through the interpretation of statistical graphs of data on education and income, the place of black women in society., Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar uma atividade construída com o foco na interpretação de gráficos estatísticos a partir de temáticas que versem sobre a interseccionalidade de sexo e raça, considerando aspectos econômicos e sociais das cidades de Salvador-BA e São Paulo-SP, entre 2011 e 2017.

- Abstract
Understanding a graph is one of the activities that a citizen commonly carries out in his daily life, since this type of representation is used in various media (television, internet, magazines or newspapers) to present statistical information. In this study, we analyze the level of graphical understanding that 39 first grade students at secondary school achieve when they read and interpret three statistical graphs (circular, bar and line). Following a qualitative methodology, of an exploratory-descriptive type, the students’ responses are analyzed based on the levels of graphical understanding proposed by the articulation of Curcio’s taxonomy and the Aoyama hierarchy. In general, most of the students reached level 2, comparative, by making comparisons with the data represented in the graph, which implies that they made a literal reading, level 1. Very few students formulated explanatory hypotheses about the behavior of the data, reaching level 4, integrative.

Abstract: Statistical graphs—in particular, line graphs and bar graphs—are efficient means of communication in a wide range of non-expert settings. In communication settings, statistical graphs do not only serve as visualizations of individual data points but also provide visual access to various aspects of the information contained in data. Moreover, specific types of graphs are better means for providing visual access to certain aspects of data. For instance, trend information is visually conveyed through line graphs and bar graphs in the time domain. The interpretation of the information content in a graph is influenced by several factors, such as perceptual salience of line segments in a line graph. In addition, the presence of graphical cues substantially influences the interpretation of graph readers. Graphical cues are visual elements, usually in the form of point markers, non-directional lines, curves and arrows. They play a communicative role in communication through graphs. The present study reports an experimental investigation, in which the participants provided verbal descriptions of a set of graphs with/without graphical cues. The stimuli involved line graphs and bar graphs that represented the same data. The analyses of eye movements and verbal protocols reveal that the interpretations of the participants are systematically influenced by the presence or absence of a graphical cue, the type of the graphical cue (i.e., a point marker vs. an arrow), as well as the type of the graph (i.e., a line graph vs. a bar graph). Abstract To break with the traditional model of Basic Statistics classes in Higher Education, we sought on Statistical Literacy and Critical Education to develop an activity about graphic interpretation, which took place in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), as a complement to classroom meetings. Twenty-three engineering students from a public higher education institution in Rio de Janeiro took part in the research. Our objective was to analyze elements of graphic comprehension in an activity that consisted of identifying incorrect statistical graphs, conveyed by the media, followed by argumentation and interaction among students about these errors. The main results evidenced that elements of the Graphic Sense were present in the discussions and were the goal of the students' critical analysis. The VLE was responsible for facilitating communication, fostering student participation, and linguistic writing, so the use of digital technologies and activities favored by collaboration and interaction are important for statistical development, but such construction is a gradual process.

Abstract The aim of this work was to analyze the statistical graphs included in the two most frequently series of textbooks used in Costa Rica basic education. We analyze the type of graph, its semiotic complexity, and the data context, as well as the type of task, reading level required to complete the task and purpose of the graph within the task. We observed the predominance of bar graphs, third level of semiotic complexity (representing a distribution), second reading level (reading between the data), work and school context, reading and computation tasks and analysis purpose. We describe the differences in the various grades and between both editorials, as well as differences and coincidences with results of other textbook studies carried out in Spain and Chile.

This article reports a case study of the iterative design and evaluation of a natural language-driven assistive technology, iGraph-LITE, providing people who are blind access to line graphs. Two laboratory-based usability studies involving blind and sighted people are presented with a discussion of the ensuing implementation of changes. Blind participants were found to adopt different graph interrogation strategies than sighted participants. A small field study is then reported in which a blind user who works with graphs took part to determine the degree to which the iGraph-LITE commands would meet the needs of blind graph experts. The final study invited sighted graph experts and novices to visually inspect and explain a set of line graphs comparable to those used in the usability studies. It aimed to highlight the concepts and the range of words sighted people use, to ascertain the appropriateness of the iGraph-LITE lexicon. A set of preliminary guidelines is presented. PUBLIC libraries -- Economic aspects , *RECESSIONS , *FINANCING of public libraries , *LIBRARY advocacy & activism , *LIBRARY materials - Abstract
During and after the Great Recession, U.S. public library advocacy messages focused on cuts in funding and significantly increased utilization of services, particularly technology services. This article analyzes quantitative evidence appearing in advocacy materials and offers alternative data for evaluating the validity of claims made in such materials. For the most part, summary statistical accounts of the experiences of public libraries during the recession paint an incomplete picture. It is suggested that portraying U.S. libraries in general as “doing more with less” is a considerable overstatement since the majority of libraries had funding increases in the aftermath of the recession. Only 23 percent of all U.S. public libraries delivered more services while simultaneously experiencing funding decreases. The article recommends that library advocacy campaigns strive to present accurate, balanced, and complete information in their promotional materials. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
It has been argued that teachers need practical principled knowledge and that design research can help develop such knowledge. What has been underestimated, however, is how to make such know-how and know-why useful for teachers. To illustrate how principled knowledge can be "practicalized", we draw on a design study in which we developed a professional development program for primary school teachers (N = 5) who learned to design language-oriented mathematics lessons. The principled knowledge we used in the program stemmed from the literature on genre pedagogy, scaffolding, and hypothetical learning trajectories. We show how shifting to a simple template focusing on "domain text" rather than genre, and "reasoning steps" rather that genre features made the principled knowledge more practical for teachers.

- Abstract
Students persistently misinterpret histograms. Based on a literature review we conjectured that the confusion of histograms with case-value plots was leading to inappropriate interpretation strategies. Hence, the question for this research is: what are the most common strategies for secondary school students when estimating the mean in histograms and case-value plots? In a task with twelve graphs (histograms or case-value plots) we measured students’ eye movements (N=10, grade 10–11. The most common strategies students use are: a case-value plot interpretation strategy and a computational strategy both applied to histograms. Furthermore, some students reported strategies that are not in line with their gaze data nor their estimated mean.

- Abstract
The scarce research on teachers indicate that they often misinterpret histograms. We conjecture that the confusion of histograms with case-value plots is the source of many misinterpretations. Therefore, the question for this study is: what are the most common strategies of secondary school teachers when interpreting histograms and case-value plots? To answer this question, we use a method that allows for a more in-depth analysis of twelve teachers’ interpretations of graphical representations than was ever possible before: eye-tracking combined with retrospective verbal reports. Preliminary results show that several teachers apply a case-value plot interpretation strategy on a histogram. Furthermore, some participants use an area interpretation strategy or histogram interpretation strategy applied to a case-value plot. In addition, gaze data suggest that teachers use strategies that did not reach awareness and therefore will not be reported during thinking aloud protocols.

A cycle plot or a multiway chart often dramatically improves the presentation of data that some charts in common use do not communicate clearly. Yet these two graph forms are not well known. This article presents them through the use of before and after examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
