The Canary Islands are heavily dependent on fossil fuels which intensifies the need for a decarbonisation pathway by 2050. Our study provides a comprehensive approach to identify possible energy transition pathways in line with different stakeholder perspectives. We conducted two rounds of 16 foresight interviews in the region with stakeholders representing different groups. The first round focused on understanding the current challenges and opportunities of the energy system, while the second round aimed at identifying the overall vision of the stakeholders for their local energy system. We have found that there are still significant regulatory difficulties that hinder implementation of technologies and innovative business models. However, the main challenges highlighted were achieving a transition without energy justice and the lack of collaboration between stakeholders. Different pathways have been identified but all interviewees emphasised that the future energy system needs to be human-centred and support citizen participation, prosumers, and energy communities.

The aim of this study was to determine lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and selenium in muscle and cephalothorax of giant red Mediterranean shrimp (Aristaeomorpha foliacea). Arsenic was also determined in the lipid fraction of the shrimp to provide an estimate of the arsenolipids. The results indicated that Pb and Cd were higher in cephalothorax than in muscle (p < 0.05), while Hg was doubled in muscle. The concentrations of Cd, Pb and Hg in the edible tissue of shrimp were under the European Union maximum levels for contaminants in foodstuffs. The molar ratio of Se:Hg was calculated to 2.4:1 and 20:1 in muscle and cephalothorax, respectively, results higher than the recommended (1:1). Arsenic concentration was one order of magnitude higher than the rest of the elements. The arsenolipids comprised 0.4 and 1.9 % of the total As in muscle and cephalothorax, respectively, whereas the rest was comprised by water soluble compounds. Analysis of the lipid extracts with High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry showed the existence of several arsenolipids, with a dominant peak eluting at 2−4 min, in both muscle and cephalothorax. The Estimated Weekly Intake per meal size in both tissues for adults was calculated. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

The current study performs a detailed micropalaeontological analysis, in terms of ostracods, benthic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton, in order to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental history of the sedimentary sequence exposed in the central part of Corinth Isthmus. Twenty one samples from two lateral sections were studied, on both sides of a westwards dipping normal fault at the west end of the central horst, which are part of the same stratigraphical sequence. The calcareous nannofossil analysis provided for the first time dating evidence for the upper Corinth Marl sequence, revealing that Section A (at the footwall block of the fault/the upper part of the Corinth Marl) is attributed to the Early Pleistocene /Calabrian (nannofossil biozone MNN19f) and that Section B (at the hanging wall of the fault) is assigned to the Middle Pleistocene /Chibanian (MNN20). Both parts of the studied sequence not only differentiate in age but bear notably separated species composition of the main ostracod assemblages as well. The combined study of ostracod and benthic foraminiferal microfaunas indicated that at least since Early Pleistocene the Corinth Marl deposits at the central part of Corinth Isthmus corresponded to a shallow, restricted, oligohaline lagoon with salinity alternations expressed as layers enriched in nannofossil content. Towards Middle Pleistocene the lagoon presented increased salinity and signs of shoaling. The studied sequence closes upwards with a bed of Middle Pleistocene age, rich in marine molluscs and corals indicating a radical environmental change: the opening of the lagoon and the establishment of a shallow marine coastal environment. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS

Background: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism is the main genetic modulator of homocysteine. Data suggest a potential association of homozygosity for the TT MTHFR genotype with premature myocardial infarction (MI). We explored whether TT homozygosity is associated with long-term prognosis in patients with premature ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI). Methods: A total of 265 consecutive patients who had survived their first STEMI ≤35 years of age were followed for a median of 8 years (5–12). Primary endpoints were cardiac death and secondary endpoints were hospitalizations for acute coronary syndrome, myocardial revascularization, arrhythmic event or ischemic stroke. Serum lipids, homocysteine, folate levels were measured at baseline and all patients were also tested for the MTHFR C677T polymorphism. Results: During follow-up 14 patients died (cardiac death) [5.3%] while 84 (31.7%) met the secondary endpoints. In univariate Cox regression analysis TT homozygosity predicted the occurrence of cardiac death (Hazard ratio (HR): 4.071; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.404–11.809, p =.010) but not the occurrence of secondary endpoints (HR: 0.877; 95% CI: 0.479–1.605, p =.669). TT homozygosity remained an independent predictor of cardiac death after adjustment for conventional risk factors (i.e., sex, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, family history of premature coronary artery disease [CAD]) [HR: 4.350; 95% CI: 1.472–12.856, p =.008]. The association also remained after adjustment for left ventricular ejection fraction or the presence of significant CAD. Conclusions: Homozygosity for the TT MTHFR is an independent long-term predictor of cardiac death in patients with premature STEMI. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Executive Summary:\ud \ud The EU's SET Plan has proposed the development of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) to achieve the transition towards a more sustainable energy system through the adoption of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency measures. PEDs are envisioned to be neighbourhoods that utilise such technologies and create an environment that enables citizens to lead environmentally‐friendly lifestyles. At their core, PEDs create value across three sustainability dimensions: environmental, social, and economic.\ud \ud PEDs and PED‐like projects can be developed in a variety of ways and are a product of the physical, social, and economic characteristics of the environment. Innovative business models – the configurations in which value is created, delivered, and captured – are integral to leveraging these contextual characteristics in order to achieve the goals of PEDs. This study aims to identify best practice cases and categorise them into archetypes of business models operating in PEDs in order to summarise the opportunities available in PED creation.\ud \ud The authors synthesise existing literature in the area of sustainable business models to develop a conceptual framework that analyses the extent to which the value dimensions of business models address the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability, with a focus on PEDs. This allows the building blocks of the original business model canvas to be modified and extended. The authors use a qualitative analytical approach, to a set of selected European cases, through the lens of the conceptual framework to identify business model archetypes of PEDs and PED‐like projects.

The present study concerns the histological examination of the hind limb of a cat (Felis sp.), with an emphasis on Haversian bone. Acknowledging the variety of obstacles to be confronted, during histological studies, it was decided the documentation, description, and comparison of the longitudinal distribution of the main microstructural characteristics. To reveal what remains hidden from the sight of knowledge, the novel Geographical Information Systems (GIS) methodology was followed. In means to provide conclusive and credible results, it was analyzed the full spectrum of the resulted cross sections and not just a statistical acceptable number or a specific region of interest. In addition, having used the right femur and tibia from the same animal, species and age discrepancies were eliminated. More thoroughly, osteon and Haversian canal size and circularity were calculated and spatially analyzed. Absolute and relative osteon population densities (OPDs) and tissue-type distributions were also estimated. The use of GIS software constituted the core of the current research, since its application transformed cross sections into informative maps, where inter-skeletal, inter-cortical, and intra-cortical distributional patterns were directly recognized and accordingly correlated to strain and load regimes. As result, it is provided the histomorphological and histomorphometrical profile of the samples, under the prism of the existing biomechanical regime. Finally, having further deployed the potentials of GIS software, it is verified and promoted the feasibility of histological mapping as an indispensable procedure, aligned with the necessities of modern science, regardless of discipline or background. © 2019, Japanese Association of Anatomists.

Normally atmospheric CO2 is the major driver of ocean acidification (OA); however, local discharge/degradation of organic matter (OM) and redox reactions can exacerbate OA in coastal areas. In this work we study the response of nutrient and carbon systems to pH decrease in relation to hydrographically induced intermittent characteristics and examine scenarios for future ocean acidification in a coastal system. Laboratory microcosm experiments were conducted using seawater and surface sediment collected from the deepest part of Elefsis Bay; the pH was constantly being monitored while CO2 gas addition was adjusted automatically. In Elefsis Bay surface pCO2 is already higher than global present atmospheric values, while near the bottom pCO2 reaches 1538 µatm and carbonate saturation states were calculated to be around 1.5. During the experiment, in more acidified conditions, limited alkalinity increase was observed and was correlated with the addition of bicarbonates and OM. Ammonium oxidation was decelerated and a nitrification mechanism was noticed, despite oxygen deficiency, paralleled by reduction of Mn-oxides. Phosphate was found significantly elevated for the first time in lower pH values, without reprecipitating after reoxygenation; this was linked with Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reprecipitation without phosphate adsorption affecting both available dissolved phosphate and (dissolved inorganic nitrogen) DIN:DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphate)ratio. © 2020 by the authors. The study area is the Thriassion Plain, an important area, in antiquity, surrounding the famous ancient town of Eleusis, 20 km west of Athens. The modern town and port and the entire area were heavily industrialized (1965–1995) coupled with unregulated urban and agricultural development. The presence of two crude oil refineries and other oil-related industries have strongly impacted the entire environment, including soils, waters and sediments of the broader area. The purpose of this work is to better understand how a multi-layered groundwater system affects the potential underground spread of certain fuel volatile compounds, namely the BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes) as well as their attenuation after their direct or indirect release into the aquifer system. The spatial distribution of BTEX in groundwaters show that they were concentrated mainly in four rather restricted locations. Three of them were spotted, as expected, in the close vicinity of known pollution sources (a military airfield and two crude oil refineries). The other one corresponds to an abandoned site with no outstanding pollution sources where wells exist, eventually used for illegal dumping of oily wastes. It is important that the concentrations decrease significantly from autumn to spring. This decline could be characterized as natural attenuation, related to natural dilution phenomena and a flushing out of pollutants discharging through underwater springs to the sea during the rainy period (October to April). This, in turn, could be associated to the specific geological conditions affecting the hydrology, such as the unconsolidated non-permeable deposits and the multi layered formations of the area’s aquifers. © 2020 by the authors. Automatic feature matching is a crucial step in Structure-from-Motion (SfM) applications for 3D reconstruction purposes. From an historical perspective we can say now that SIFT was the enabling technology that made SfM a successful and fully automated pipeline. SIFT was the ancestor of a wealth of detector/descriptor methods that are now available. Various research activities have tried to benchmark detector/descriptors operators, but a clear outcome is difficult to be drawn. This paper presents an ISPRS Scientific Initiative aimed at providing the community with an educational open-source tool (called PhotoMatch) for tie point extractions and image matching. Several enhancement and decolorization methods can be initially applied to an image dataset in order to improve the successive feature extraction steps. Then different detector/descriptor combinations are possible, coupled with different matching strategies and quality control metrics. Examples and results show the implemented functionality of PhotoMatch which has also a tutorial for shortly explaining the implemented methods.

This paper proposes a procedure for the search of a geometrical similarity pattern in architectural heritage by means of calculating probability indexes to support hypotheses initially endorsed by documentary sources. The buildings analysed are the Cathedral of Seville and the Church of Santiago, in Jerez, Spain. The 3D models of their selected pillars are obtained by means of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), Optical Scanning (OS) and photogrammetry through image-based modelling software (SFM-IBM). To this end, a procedure for the comparison of shapes is established. It is based on similarity statistics, the determination of homologous points and the agreement of characteristic sections. Here, two key aspects are considered: on the one hand, the metric standpoint; on the other hand, historical-graphical features of the 3D models: composition, techniques, styles, and historical-graphical documentary sources. Thus, putting aside the mere dimensional analysis, the sections are compared with graphical patterns and models of which the same authorship – stonemasons working in that age – is accurately known. As a result, the outcomes of this research reveal the geometrical similarity between the elements of the pillars of the Cathedral of Seville and the Church of Santiago.

This paper presents the interdisciplinary study on the origin of “black bones” at the Neolithic lakeside settlement of Dispilio, Greece (5500–3500 BCE), where animal bones have been recovered from a waterlogged and organic soil-matrix containing charcoal, ash and burnt cultural remains. In the past, this has been interpreted as the result of the destruction of the village by fire and abandonment. This study aims to examine this theory through the distinction of burnt vs. oxide stained bones. A selection of 44 fish and 19 mammal bone samples are examined through Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Microanalysis (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) - Rietveld Analysis, Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR, NIR) and chemical analyses (ICP-MS). Alterations of histology, mineralogy, chemistry, crystallinity and structural parameters prove that the “black” bones from Dispilio owe their colour to Mn and Fe oxide staining. Light-coloured bones found at the site, have not been affected by this diagenetic procedure, which suggests that they were buried in a totally different geochemical environment. The analytical techniques employed did not offer any proof that the studied material is burnt. However, due to the fact that most techniques used to this day allow for the identification of thermal alteration of bone at temperatures usually higher than 300-450 °C, the possibility of thermal alterations due to an indirect fire, thus at lower temperatures or a fire of small duration cannot be identified and thus be ruled out. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Naturally occurring microbial decomposition of organic matter (OM) in coastal marine environments cause increased acidity in deeper layers similar or even exceeding the future predictions for global ocean acidification (OA). Experimental studies in coastal areas characterized by increased inputs of OM and nutrients, coping with intermittent hypoxic/anoxic conditions, provide better understanding of the mechanisms affecting nutrients and carbon biogeochemistry under the emerging effects of coastal pH decrease. Laboratory CO2-manipulated microcosm experiments were conducted using seawater and surface sediment collected from the deepest part of Elefsis Bay (Saronikos Gulf, Eastern Mediterranean) focusing to study the co-evolution of processes affected by the decline of dissolved oxygen and pH induced by (a) OM remineralization and (b) the future anthropogenic increase of atmospheric CO2. Under more acidified conditions, a significant increase of total alkalinity was observed partially attributed to the sedimentary carbonate dissolution and the reactive nitrogen species shift towards ammonium. Nitrate and nitrite decline, in parallel with ammonium increase, demonstrated a deceleration of ammonium oxidation processes along with decrease in nitrate production. The decreased DIN:DIP ratio, the prevalence of organic nutrient species against the inorganic ones, the observations of constrained DON degradation and nitrate production decline and the higher DOC concentrations revealed the possible inhibition of OM decomposition under lower pH values. Finally, our results highlight the need for detailed studies of the carbonate system in coastal areas dominated by hypoxic/anoxic conditions, accompanied by other biogeochemical parameters and properly designed experiments to elucidate the processes sequence or alterations due to pH reduction. © 2018 Mediterranean Marine Science.

Recent estimates of nutrient budgets for the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) indicate that atmospheric aerosols play a significant role as suppliers of macro- and micro- nutrients to its Low Nutrient Low Chlorophyll water. Here we present the first mesocosm experimental study that examines the overall response of the oligotrophic EMS surface mixed layer (Cretan Sea, May 2012) to two different types of natural aerosol additions, “pure” Saharan dust (SD, 1.6 mg l-1) and mixed aerosols (A - polluted and desert origin, 1 mg l-1). We describe the rationale, the experimental set-up, the chemical characteristics of the ambient water and aerosols and the relative maximal biological impacts that resulted from the added aerosols. The two treatments, run in triplicates (3 m3 each), were compared to control-unamended runs. Leaching of approximately 2.1-2.8 and 2.2-3.7 nmol PO4 and 20-26 and 53-55 nmol NOx was measured per each milligram of SD and A, respectively, representing an addition of approximately 30% of the ambient phosphate concentrations. The nitrate/phosphate ratios added in the A treatment were twice than those added in the SD treatment. Both types of dry aerosols triggered a positive change (25-600% normalized per 1 mg l-1 addition) in most of the rate and state variables that were measured: bacterial abundance (BA), bacterial production (BP), Synechococcus (Syn) abundance, chlorophyll-a (chl-a), primary production (PP) and dinitrogen fixation (N2-fix), with relative changes among them following the sequence BP>PP≈N2-fix>chl-a≈BA≈Syn. Our results show that the ‘polluted’ aerosols triggered a relatively larger biological change compared to the SD amendments (per a similar amount of mass addition), especially regarding BP and PP. We speculate that despite the co-limitation of P and N in the EMS, the additional N released by the A treatment may have triggered the relatively larger response in most of the rate and state variables as compared to SD. An implication of our study is that a warmer atmosphere in the future may increase dust emissions and influence the intensity and length of the already well stratified water column in the EMS and hence the impact of the aerosols as a significant external source of new nutrients.

Large amounts of dust and atmospheric aerosols, originating from surrounding desert areas (e.g., Sahara and Middle East) are deposited annually on the surface of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. These depositions can provide high amounts of micro (such as Fe, Zn, Co) and macro nutrients (such as P and N) to supplement nutrient-poor surface waters- that typically limit primary productivity and also dinitrogen (N2) fixation in many marine environments. Here, we studied the impact of the atmospheric deposition of dust and aerosols on N2 fixation in the Cretan Sea (Eastern Mediterranean Sea). Mixed polluted aerosols (hereafter A) and Saharan dust (hereafter SD) were added to nine mesocosms (3-m3 each) containing surface mixed layer seawater (~10 m), and N2 fixation was evaluated for 6 days during May 2012 (springtime). The addition of SD triggered a rapid (30 h) and robust (2-4-fold) increase in N2 fixation rates that remained high for 6 days and contributed 3-8% of the primary productivity. The A addition also resulted in higher N2 fixation rates compared to the unamended control mesocosms, although the responses were less profound (1.5-2-fold) and accounted for only 2-4% of the primary productivity. The microbial community responded differently to the two additions. Heterotrophic bacterial N2 fixers dominated the diazotroph community in A and the control mesocosms, while the non-filamentous cyanobacterial group Trichodesmium prevailed in the SD treatment (68% of all the operational taxonomic units, verified by qPCR analyses). Acid processes in the atmosphere, particularly those caused by anthropogenic acid gases, increase the amount of bioavailable P in dust and hence are predicted to increase microbial biomass and primary productivity when supplied to oceanic surface waters. This is likely to be particularly important in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS), which is P limited during the winter bloom and N&P co-limited for phytoplankton in summer. However, it is not clear how the acid processes acting on Saharan dust will affect the microbial biomass and primary productivity in the EMS. Here, we carried out bioassay manipulations on EMS surface water on which Saharan dust was added as dust (Z), acid treated dust (ZA), dust plus excess N (ZN), and acid treated dust with excess N (ZNA) during springtime (May 2012) and measured bacterioplankton biomass, metabolic, and other relevant chemical and biological parameters. We show that acid treatment of Saharan dust increased the amount of bioavailable P supplied by a factor of ~40 compared to non-acidified dust (18.4 vs. 0.45 nmoles P mg-1 dust, respectively). The increase in chlorophyll, primary, and bacterial productivity for treatments Z and ZA were controlled by the amount of N added with the dust while those for treatments ZN and ZNA (in which excessive N was added) were controlled by the amount of P added. These results confirm that the surface waters were N&P co-limited for phytoplankton during springtime. However, total chlorophyll and primary productivity in the acid treated dust additions (ZA and ZNA) were less than predicted from that calculated from the amount of the potentially limiting nutrient added. This biological inhibition was interpreted as being due to labile trace metals being added with the acidified dust. A probable cause for this biological inhibition was the addition of dissolved Al, which forms potentially toxic Al nanoparticles when added to seawater. Charkadio Cave, on Tilos Island, is one of the richest Mediterranean fossiliferous sites, preserving remains of the dwarf elephant Palaeoloxodon tiliensis. This species is considered to be the last European elephant. Recent advances in the fields of engineering and imaging technology and their applications in palaeontology have allowed the digitization, modelling and 3D printing of skeletal remains of P. tiliensis for the first time. Taphonomical data were combined with appropriate mathematical methods and allometric analyses in order to determine missing bone measurements and estimate correct relative proportions of skeletal elements. Computed Tomography and non-contact digitization via Laser Scanning were used in order to capture the specimens' surface morphology and create 3D models that are adjusted to the correct dimensions derived from the mathematical analyses. The 3D models were then 3D printed with the use of Rapid Prototyping technologies. A research potential of fossil 3D modeling could be its application in morphological comparisons between different taxa. In this study, atlas 3D models of P. tiliensis and Palaeoloxodon antiquus (Falconer and Cautley, 1847) have been combined in a single 3D model that quantifies morphological differences by a color scale, thus minimizing observation error. 3D models and 3D printed replicas facilitate and enhance inter-institutional scientific interaction, minimizing costs and risks related to the transfer of irreplaceable fossil specimens. Finally, a positive outcome related to the above research could be its application in educational activities hosted in institutes such as schools, universities and museums. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA.

We model an economy where imperfectly competitive firms choose whether to employ a dirty technology and pay an emission tax or employ a clean technology and incur the cost of its adoption. Bureaucrats who are entrusted with the task of monitoring the emissions of each firm, are corruptible in the sense that they may accept bribes in order to mislead authorities on the firms’ actual emissions. Market entry is an important element in the relation between corruption and pollution. Particularly, the incidence of corruption increases the number of entrants in the market, while the bureaucrats’ incentives to be corrupt are higher in a market with more competitors. We find multiple equilibria where both corruption and pollution are either high or low.

Discharge of volcanic gases in the marine environment can lead to local perturbations in ocean acidity, with consequences for biological communities and the potential for hazards related to depressurization and release of gases at the surface. Numerous hydrothermal vents in the crater of Kolumbo submarine volcano (Aegean Sea) are discharging virtually pure gaseous CO2 together with clear fluids at temperatures up to 220 °C. Acoustic imaging of the ascending bubbles suggests that the gas is being dissolved into seawater within ~10 m above the crater floor (500 m below sea level). Dissolution of the gas likely causes local increases in water density that result in sequestration of CO2 within the enclosed crater, and the accumulation of acidic seawater. Lack of macrofauna at the Kolumbo hydrothermal vents, occurrence of carbonate-poor sediment in the crater, and pH values as low as 5.0 in recovered water samples point to acidic conditions within the crater. Buildup of CO2-rich water in the bowl-shaped crater of Kolumbo may be producing conditions analogous to some African volcanic lakes (Lake Monoun and Lake Nyos, Cameroon) where overturn of gas-rich bottom waters led to abrupt releases of CO2 at the surface. A minimum estimate of 2.0 × 105 m3 (STP) of excess CO2 may currently exist in the bottom 10 m of the Kolumbo crater. © 2013 Geological Society of America.

We report on integrated geomorphological, mineralogical, geochemical and biological investigations of the hydrothermal vent field located on the floor of the density-stratified acidic (pH ∼ 5) crater of the Kolumbo shallow-submarine arc-volcano, near Santorini. Kolumbo features rare geodynamic setting at convergent boundaries, where arc-volcanism and seafloor hydrothermal activity are occurring in thinned continental crust. Special focus is given to unique enrichments of polymetallic spires in Sb and Tl (±Hg, As, Au, Ag, Zn) indicating a new hybrid seafloor analogue of epithermal-to-volcanic-hosted- massive-sulphide deposits. Iron microbial-mat analyses reveal dominating ferrihydrite-type phases, and high-proportion of microbial sequences akin to Nitrosopumilus maritimus, a mesophilic Thaumarchaeota strain capable of chemoautotrophic growth on hydrothermal ammonia and CO 2. Our findings highlight that acidic shallow-submarine hydrothermal vents nourish marine ecosystems in which nitrifying Archaea are important and suggest ferrihydrite-type Fe 3+ -(hydrated)-oxyhydroxides in associated low-temperature iron mats are formed by anaerobic Fe 2+ -oxidation, dependent on microbially produced nitrate.

Potentially toxic metals in the urban chemical environment impose risks to both ecosystem and human health. Here, we evaluate the labile pools and availabilities of non-anthropogenic Ni, Cr, Co and Mn in soil samples from Thiva town (central Greece) and investigate their associations with common soil properties and geochemical data obtained by the aqua regia and single selective dissolutions. Experimental work included the initial application of the sequential extraction protocol proposed by the European Community Bureau of Reference and chemical extractions with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid solution and a modified physiologically based extraction test with the aim to obtain the operationally defined fractions of plant availability and human bioaccessibility, respectively. The leachate results demonstrated that despite the significant contribution of residual metal species especially for Ni and Cr, the studied serpentine soils provide chemically labile pools for all the considered elements. Nickel was found to be the most available metal with the order being Ni > Cr ∼ Co ∼ Mn for plant uptake and Ni > Cr > Co ∼ Mn for human bioaccessibility. The aqua regia extractable concentrations are not predictors of elemental availabilities except for Ni bioaccessible data interpreting however only a moderate percentage of the total variance. The incorporation of basic soil properties (mostly total organic carbon), geochemical data for the major elements Ca, Mg and Fe and ammonium oxalate extractable Cr significantly improved the estimations for individual elements entailing the strong influence of the chemistry and mineralogy of soil materials to the release of focus metals from the soil matrix. This study provides for the first time bioaccessible data for serpentine-derived soils that are more realistic for evaluating potential adverse effects on the human health. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.
