1. Estimation of demographic parameters of some plant species accounting for imperfect detection probabilities.

Abstract

Detection probability (p) in plants is imperfect in natural conditions due to several factors. This imperfect detectability is rarely accounted for in the estimation of demographic parameters, such as survival probabilities (S) or transition rates between different life states or size classes (ψ), which may result in inaccurate quantitative information about plant populations. In this study, we used previously collected data of five plant species belonging to different families with contrasting life forms and habitats (Flaveria chlorifolia, Mammillaria hernandezii, Neobuxbaumia macrocephala, Govenia lagenophora, and Castilleja tenuiflora), data simulations, multi‐state models (a demographic tool that explicitly accounts for p), and direct estimation of survival and transition rates (i.e., assuming perfect detection) to identify in which species, states, or demographic parameters the bias caused by ignoring our imperfect detectability is more severe. Detection was imperfect (p < 1) for all our study species. In general, ignoring detection probabilities yielded underestimated survival and transition rates in all five species. Biases caused by assuming perfect detection were also large and significant, mainly in inconspicuous life states and size classes, such as seedlings and dry individuals. In contrast, considering detection probabilities resulted in fewer underestimated survival and transition rates, with smaller and mostly nonsignificant biases. Intriguingly, some transitions were overestimated even when accounting for detection probabilities. Our findings highlight the importance of considering that detection of most plant species is imperfect in the field, even in species that are apparently conspicuous, to avoid incorrect inferences about plant populations. 2. Physical layer authentication in UAV-enabled relay networks based on manifold learning.

Abstract

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) relay network is a promising solution in the next-generation wireless networks due to its high capacity and unlimited geography. However, because of the openness of wireless channels and UAV mobility, it is remarkably challenging to guarantee the secure access of UAV relay. In this paper, we investigate the physical layer authentication (PLA) to verify the identity of the UAV relay for preventing unauthorized access to users’ information or network service. Unlike most existing PLA methods for UAV, the proposed PLA scheme fully considers the time-varying of physical layer attributes caused by UAV mobility, and transforms the authentication problem into recognizing nonlinearly separable physical layer data. Particularly, we propose a manifold learning-based PLA scheme that can authenticate the mobile UAV relay in real time by establishing the local correlation of physical layer attributes. The Markov chain of physical layer data in the time domain is established to evaluate UAV state transition probability through the proposed diffusion map algorithm. The legitimate UAV and spoofing attackers can always be authenticated by the different motion states. Performance analysis offered a comprehensive understanding of the proposed scheme. Extensive simulations confirm that the performance of the proposed scheme improves over 18% in resisting the intelligent spoofing UAV compared with the traditional methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. State transitions among groups of cyclists in cycling points races.

Abstract

This study analyzed the global state of groups formed by cyclists competing in three different points races and considered the behaviour of individual cyclists in those races. We measured the time difference between the front cyclist and the other cyclists when they crossed the centrelines of home and back straights in order to quantify the global configuration of cyclists in terms of their density and features of states, extracted using principal components analysis (PCA). We examined whether the group separation and group density that characterize the cycling race can be extracted by PCA. We interpreted the PCA results to explain the separation and density of the group using the first and second principal components. Then, we defined the state of configuration of the cyclists in each lap in the plane of the first and second principal components. Subsequently, the state transition probabilities were obtained. States 1, 2, 3, and 4 corresponded to the third, second, first, and fourth quadrants, respectively. State 1 represented a state comprising one dense group, state 2 represented one stretched group, state 3 represented a divided group, and state 4 represented an escape group far from a single dense group. An approach to understand the collective behaviour of cycling points races through principal component analysis was effective for quantifying the configuration of the cyclists. Principal component analysis of the global configuration of the cyclists in the points races revealed the fission-fusion dynamics was characterized by two components. The density of a group and number of groups, and transitions among four states was defined by these two components. State transition probabilities indicate that the group separation states were more frequent in the latter half of the sprint interval, and it was difficult to re-combine the separated groups into one. The riders and coaches need to be aware of the stretching and separation of the group, even if it does not occur immediately before the sprint as the positioning of a cyclist in the group would be important at that time. Abstract

• Temporal models of Gamma-Gamma fading FSO links with pointing errors are built. • Level crossing rate and state transition probability are derived theoretically. • Misalignment strength has special effects on the Max point of level crossing rate. • Actual rather than generic covariance functions are considered. • Experiments verify the theory with averaged relative errors below 6.7 %. The knowledge of atmospheric channel is quite imperative for free-space optical (FSO) communications. To capture the time-varying essence of intensity fluctuations in an FSO connection, we propose a finite-state Markov (FSM) model for FSO links affected by Gamma-Gamma distributed atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors. First, the level crossing rate (LCR) of the unified intensity fluctuation is derived considering the non-generic channel autocorrelation characteristics, based on which the state transition probability (STP) matrix of the FSM model is calculated. Then, numerical simulations are presented for different strength parameters and frequency parameters of the channel. The results show that the misalignment strength does not affect the ratio of the level where the LCR reaches its maximum to the mean level. Finally, a series of well-designed experiments are carried out to verify the theory. As a result, the theoretical predictions conform to the experimental data, with averaged STP relative errors below 6.7 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The η–µ fading distribution is used for better representation of small scale variations of the faded signal in Non Line-Of-Sight conditions. In this paper, first-order Finite-State Markov Chain (FSMC) model of η–µ fading channel is proposed for two cases. i.e., considering received signal amplitude only and by jointly varying amplitude and phase. FSMC model captures the essence of slowly fading channels and acts as an important tool to study the performance of wireless communication systems. The Performance parameters of η–µ fading channels like level crossing rate, steady-state probability, state-time duration and state transition probability are studied. Numerical results depicting the performance of FSMC for η–µ fading channels show that η–µ distribution (Format 2) is a severely affected fading channel as compared to η–µ distribution (Format 1) as the former generally occurs in urban areas whereas the latter occurs in suburban and rural areas. Abstract

Despite attractive thermal and electrical characteristics, wide band-gap semiconductor devices such as SiC MOSFET have struggled to penetrate in aircraft applications because of reliability issues in earlier releases. The second and third generation SiC MOSFETs have achieved improved reliability using high quality oxides and innovative fabrication process. This paper presents a failure rate model for SiC MOSFET based on the accelerated test data at a given operating condition. The proposed model enables the system level reliability analysis of second generation SiC MOSFET-based converters. The reliability of SiC two-phase synchronous boost converter has been evaluated at two different operating conditions: 10 and 16 A load condition. To predict the life time of the converter even after a chain of component failures, Markov's reliability model of the converter is developed. The state transition probabilities and mean time to failure (MTTF) of SiC converter are compared against its Si counterpart which shows that second generation SiC MOSFETs are for aircraft applications with high reliability. Abstract

This paper constructs a berth-quay crane capacity planning model with the lowest average daily cost in the container terminal, and analyzes the influence of the number of berths and quay cranes on the terminal operation. The object of berth-quay crane capacity planning is to optimize the number of berths and quay cranes to maximize the benefits of the container terminal. A steady state probability transfer model based on Markov chain for container terminal is constructed by the historical time series of the queuing process. The current minimum time operation principle (MTOP) strategy is proposed to correct the state transition probability of the Markov chain due to the characteristics of the quay crane movement to change the service capacity of a single berth. The solution error is reduced from 7.03% to 0.65% compared to the queuing theory without considering the quay crane movement, which provides a basis for the accurate solution of the berth-quay crane capacity planning model. The proposed berth-quay crane capacity planning model is validated by two container terminal examples, and the results show that the model can greatly guide the container terminal berth-quay crane planning.

Abstract

• A novel variant of ACO called MAACO is proposed to solve mobile robot path planning. • The proposed MAACO includes four novel mechanisms. • Parameter optimization of MAACO is operated to find suitable parameter combination. • The MAACO is compared with several existing approaches based on several instances. • Experimental results show the superiority of MAACO. As the key point for auto-navigation of mobile robot, path planning is a research hotspot in the field of robot. Generally, the ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO) is one of the commonly used approaches aiming to solve the problem of path planning of mobile robot. Nevertheless, the traditional ACO has the shortcomings such as slow convergence speed, inefficiency and easily fall into local optimal values. Thus, a novel variant of ACO is proposed in this study. In detail, a new heuristic mechanism with orientation information is firstly introduced to add direction guidance during the iteration process, further to advance the convergence speed of algorithm. Secondly, an improved heuristic function is presented to enhance the purposiveness and reduce the number of turn times of planned path. Then, an improved state transition probability rule is introduced to improve the search efficiency significantly and increase the swarm diversity. Moreover, a new method for unevenly distributing initial pheromone concentration is proposed to avoid blind searching. After integrating the four improvements, the new variation of ACO called modified adaptive ant colony optimization algorithm (MAACO) is formed. Subsequently, parameter optimization of MAACO is carried out. For verifying the effectiveness of the proposed MAACO, a series of experiments are conducted based on five static space environment modes and one dynamic environment mode. Comparing with 13 existing approaches for solving the problem of path planning of mobile robot, including several variants of ACO and two commonly used algorithms (A* algorithm and Dijkstra algorithm), the experimental results demonstrate the merits of MAACO in terms of decreasing the path length, reducing the number of turn times, and promoting the convergence speed. In detail, in all the static simulation experiments, the proposed MAACO generates the shortest path length with a standard deviation of zero, and achieves the least number of turn times within the smallest convergence generation. In terms of the five experiments, the average number of reducing turn times is two with a generally reduction ratio of 22.2% compared with the best existing results.
