The interrupted case study is a structured way to engage students in active learning. Interruptions, or pauses for reflection and discussion scheduled within the case-study presentation, provide students with a chance to collaborate and engage in critical thinking. Critical thinking style, which is a measure of how one tends to think critically, provides insight into how one tackles problem solving. This article describes a pilot project that combined critical-thinking style and an interrupted case study, delivered over a two-class-period time frame, to four college courses. The project's goals were to assess students' self-reported knowledge, self-reported ability, changes in thinking, and intentions to use their critical thinking style in the future. The University of Florida Critical Thinking Inventory and an end-of-session evaluation were administered online, and 110 students voluntarily responded. Results indicated that many students enjoyed the discussion-based and problem-solving structure of the interrupted case study. Results also showed increases in students' self-reported knowledge about critical thinking style and content covered in the case study. For teachers looking to pilot an interrupted case study with a critical thinking style component, two class sessions can have a positive effect on student learning and encourage critical thinking.

Continuous professional development is critical for Extension staff, and many agriculture-focused Extension employees are tasked with outreach related to a wide variety of natural resource topics. The purpose of this study is to help prioritize trainings needed by Kansas Extension agents and specialists based on their current level of knowledge and interest in staying up to date on 18 different natural resource topics. Responses to a statewide survey were analyzed using the Borich model. Results indicate priority professional development needs related to soil health; effects of climate; invasive species, harmful algal blooms; and groundwater, surface water, and air quality.

Abstract This article introduces a new method to model sailing routes before the age of steam based on real-world sailing conditions. Using a broad range of historical meteorological data, it offers monthly routing predictions for historical shipping corridors and tests them against historical evidence. In this article the model was applied to French and British ports. The output reveals the presence of historical shipping corridors and offer the first journey-time metrics to and from all European ports.

The Kalina pond has been well known as a severely degraded area in the Silesia region, Poland. The environmental deterioration results from high contamination of water and bottom sediments with recalcitrant and toxic organic compounds, mainly phenol. The study was aimed at developing a bioremediation-based approach suitable for this type of polluted areas, involving microbiological treatment of water as a key and integral part of other necessary actions: mechanical interventions and the use of physical methods. During the initial biological treatment stage, autochthonous microorganisms were isolated from contaminated samples of water, soil and sediment, then subjected to strong selective pressure by incubation with the pollutants, and finally, cultivated to form a specialised microbial consortium consisting of five extremophilic bacterial strains. Consortium propagation and its biodegradation activity were optimised under variant conditions enabling bacteria to proliferate and to obtain high biomass density at large volumes allowing for the in situ application. After installing aeration systems in the pond, the consortium was surface-sprinkled to launch bioremediation and then both bacterial frequency and the contaminant level was systematically monitored. The complex remediation strategy proved efficient and was implemented on an industrial scale enabling successful remedial of the affected site. Treatment with the specifically targeted and adapted microbial consortium allowed for removal of most organic pollutants within a four-month season of 2022: the chemical oxygen demand (COD) value decreased by 72%, polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) level by 97%, while the content of total phenols and other monoaromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX) dropped below the detection thresholds.

The article proposes a new model for defining and implementing performance tests used in the process of designing and operating IT systems. By defining the objectives, types, topological patterns, and methods of implementation, a coherent description of the test preparation and execution is achieved, facilitating the interpretation of results and enabling straightforward replication of test scenarios. The model was used to develop and implement performance tests in a laboratory environment and in a production system. The proposed division of the testing process into layers correlated with the test preparation steps allows to separate quasi-independent areas, which can be handled by isolated teams of engineers. Such an approach allows to accelerate the process of implementation of performance tests and may affect the optimization of the cost of their implementation.

Aim of the study: Newly formed earth structures such as ski slopes are areas causing difficulties in attempts for efficient sodding since colonization with plants, where initial development and adaptation are hindered due to unfavourable climatic and soil factors. The main objective of the study was to demonstrate the feasibility of using nonwoven fabrics made from sheep’s wool and waste poultry feathers on steep-gradient mountain slopes. Material and methods: Biodegradable geotextiles can be used not only to protect seeds and soil from washout, but also to promote turf development and improve soil microbial quality. During the experiment, plant growth was monitored together with microbial frequency changes. Results and conclusions: The results showed that the application of nonwoven fabrics after sowing a mix of grasses and clover had many advantages including the acceleration of seedling germination, improvement of plant initial development, and increase in the number of plants per square metre. The ultimate biostimulation effect was found to be strongly dependent on geotextile biodegradability, grammage and the fleece structure. The best yield was obtained with the nonwoven grammage within the range of 150–180 g · m–2. The promotion of plant growth and, in particular, the development of the root system had a significant positive impact on the population of soil microbiota.

This study focused on assessing the financial efficiency of investing in a horizontal shower heat exchanger. The analysis was based on net present value (NPV). The research also examined the possibility of using artificial neural networks and SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) analysis to assess the profitability of the investment and the significance of individual parameters affecting the NPV of the project related to installing the heat exchanger in buildings. Comprehensive research was conducted, considering a wide range of input parameters. As a result, 1,215,000 NPV values were obtained, ranging from EUR −1996.40 to EUR 36,933.83. Based on these values, artificial neural network models were generated, and the one exhibiting the highest accuracy in prediction was selected (R2 ≈ 0.999, RMSE ≈ 57). SHAP analysis identified total daily shower length and initial energy price as key factors influencing the profitability of the shower heat exchanger. The least influential parameter was found to be the efficiency of the hot water heater. The research results can contribute to improving systems for assessing the profitability of investments in shower heat exchangers. The application of the developed model can also help in selecting appropriate technical parameters of the system to achieve maximum financial benefits.

In the face of the rapid evolution of the gaming market and the puzzling overlap of genres, consistency in classification seems elusive. The purpose of the present review was to explore the classification of video game genres in the context of psychological research. The aim was to address the challenges associated with creating consistent and meaningful classifications of video game genres, considering the rapid evolution of the gaming market and recent tendency to create games that could be classified into multiple genres. We performed a search in four databases according to the PRISMA guidelines and reviewed 96 full-text papers (N = 49 909). Through our findings, we reveal how researchers strive to classify genres and the numerous complications that arise from this pursuit. In the face of these challenges, we propose alternative ways of classifying genres. Our first proposal is a new classification of video game genres based on our literature review. In our second proposal, we advocate a more detailed understanding by focusing on specific gaming mechanics, and thus we introduce the innovative concept of utilizing community-based tags, such as Steam tags, as an alternative to genres in psychological research.

Of all cow-calf producers in the United States, one-third reside in the Southeast where operations face unique challenges and risks due to their geographical location. Cow-calf herds in the region are relatively small in terms of head counts as well as percentage of household incomes, making their operators less likely to participate in risk-reducing programs. Targeted risk communication is one way to help producers better understand and manage the multiple and complex risks they face. This study adapted the risk information seeking and processing model to inform a quantitative survey method that examined southeastern U.S. beef cow-calf producers’ perceived risks area knowledge gaps and the communication channels participants used to seek risk information. Participating producers were found to have gaps in knowledge for all risk areas in beef cow-calf management; the largest was economic and marketing/selling animals risks. No matter the risks area, producers prefer their risks information from magazines and Extension publications. Therefore, communication practitioners are encouraged to tailor risk management communications that help southeastern U.S. cow-calf producers fill their largest knowledge gaps in marketing/selling and economic risk management. Furthermore, this information is of the greatest need for producers with more beef production experience and larger herd sizes. Magazines and Extension publications offer communicators the best channels to readily reach southeastern U.S. cow-calf producers as this is where they are currently seeking risks information.

Abstract Background Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is a type of pregnancy-related lumbopelvic pain. This study aimed to examine the prevalence, severity, and factors associated with postpartum PGP in a selected group of postpartum women in Poland. Methods This was a prospective, observational study. In phase 1, 411 women were recruited 24–72 h postpartum. The prevalence of PGP was assessed by a physiotherapist using a series of dedicated tests. Pelvic floor muscle function and presence of diastasis recti were assessed via palpation examination. Age, education, parity, mode of delivery, infant body mass, body mass gain during pregnancy, the use of anesthesia during delivery and were recorded. In a phase 2, 6 weeks postpartum, the prevalence of PGP and its severity were assessed via a self-report. Results In phase 1 (shortly postpartum), PGP was diagnosed in 9% (n = 37) of women. In phase 2 (6 weeks postpartum), PGP was reported by 15.70% of women (n = 42). The univariable analyses showed a higher likelihood of PGP shortly postpartum in women who declared PGP during pregnancy (OR 14.67, 95% CI 4.43–48.61) and among women with abdominal midline doming (OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.04–4.06). The multivariable regression analysis showed significant associations in women with increased age (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01–1.21) and declaring PGP during pregnancy (OR 14.83, 95% CI 4.34–48.72). Conclusion Although the prevalence of postpartum PGP among women in Poland is lower than reported in other countries, it is experienced by almost every tenth women shortly postpartum and every sixth can report similar symptoms 6 weeks later. Age, PGP during pregnancy and abdominal midline doming were associated with experiencing PGP shortly postpartum.

IntroductionThe strength of the association between gaming involvement and gaming disorder is weak to moderate. Gamers cannot be directly involved in gaming all the time, but how much they are involved in activities indirectly related to gaming during gaming-free time may play an important role. Also, specific game genres may matter. The present investigation focuses on the role of indirect gaming involvement and genres in gaming disorder risk prediction.MethodsTwo pre-registered studies were conducted. Study 1 (N = 205) was conducted online, whereas Study 2 (N = 250) was conducted in a lab. In both cases, participants reported their direct and indirect involvement in gaming (DGI and IGI, respectively) and completed a screening tool that estimates the risk of gaming disorder (Gaming Disorder Test).ResultsBoth IGI and DGI were weakly to moderately correlated with gaming disorder (GD) and moderately with each other. The correlations between DGI and GD were similar to those obtained in related studies; the correlation between IGI and GD has not been previously reported. Hierarchical regression that took IGI together with DGI into account showed an increase in the percentage of explained variance, but only in Study 1. Contrary to expectations, IGI did not interact with DGI. As is consistent with previous research, some game genres were found to be more closely related to GD than others: in both studies, this was an RPG; in Study 1, this was also an MMORPG; in Study 2, driving and shooting games also predicted GD risk.DiscussionOverall, the results clearly indicate that not only gaming time plays a role in GD risk assessment: IGI can also predict it and in some cases may allow for more accurate predictions. Gaming genres once again proved to play a role, but these and similar results should be treated with caution due to the partial lack of repeatability.

The Vehicle Routing Problem belongs to graph optimization and its goal is to find shortest routes visiting a given set of customers with additional constraints present. The article presents the ant colony optimization metaheuristic which solves vehicle routing problems and its real-life application in transport logistics (finding routes for delivery companies). The metaheuristic generated high-quality solutions (superior to compared methods). Our tool is flexible and enables us to solve various variants of routing problems so it is well suited to specific needs of transportation companies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper focuses on the possibilities of rainwater flow control in an innovative rainwater system which is equipped with a retention canals system. Sewage retention canal is a modern solution that provides effective retention of excess rainwater by using a capacity of sewer pipes and manholes. The retention is possible by using special damming partitions which have flow openings. The hydraulic working of the traditional rainwater system and the innovative rainwater system were compared with each other. The analysis was based on the results obtained from simulations using hydrodynamic modeling. Maximum possible values of rainwater outflow intensity from outlet nodes for the traditional rainwater system and the innovative rainwater system were discussed. On the basis of the analysis it was shown that the innovative rainwater system outweighs the classic rainwater one. It discharges two functions: transports and simultaneously retains excess rainwater in canals.

The potential for recovering heat from wastewater exists at various stages, including generation, transport, and treatment. As a result, various technologies for thermal energy recovery from wastewater are now successfully employed in many countries. In order to synthetically present the current state of knowledge on heat recovery from wastewater, a bibliometric analysis of previously published studies indexed in the Web of Science database was performed. The review was further extended with strategic SWOT and SOAR analyses to identify internal and external factors determining the competitive advantage and weaknesses related to the use of wastewater heat exchangers and heat pumps. These analyses indicated the need for further research on the possibilities of heat recovery from wastewater as the use of this technology, both at the building level and on a larger scale, contributes to the implementation of sustainable development goals, especially in terms of improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. Particular emphasis should be placed on research into the use of warm wastewater together with other, better known and accepted, renewable energy sources. It is also important to continuously educate the public and promote heat recovery technologies at various levels, as well as to increase the involvement of legislators and other stakeholders.

The increase in energy demand, the scarcity of resources, as well as the adverse environmental impact of burning fossil fuels make it necessary to diversify the energy sources used. This also applies to the residential sector, which accounts for a significant proportion of global energy consumption. Particular attention should be paid to water heating, as the importance of this process in the energy balance of buildings is steadily increasing. One of the methods used to decrease energy consumption for heating water is to recover heat from greywater. However, commercially available horizontal drain water heat recovery (DWHR) units are characterized by low effectiveness, which creates a need for further research to improve it. The aim of the paper was to evaluate the possibility of improving the effectiveness of a circular horizontal DWHR unit through the use of baffles. Six different baffle models for installation in the greywater section of the heat exchanger were analyzed. The tests were conducted under the assumption of the installation of the DWHR unit on the horizontal shower waste pipe. They showed that the effectiveness of the unit equipped with baffles was higher by several to as much as 40% compared to the DWHR unit without baffles. This is tantamount to an increase in annual financial savings resulting from greywater heat recovery, as well as a reduction in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. However, it was not possible to clearly identify the optimum baffle model. In any case, the selection should consider the hydraulic conditions in the heat exchanger before installing the baffles. The results can provide guidance for companies interested in bringing new equipment and technologies to the market.

Abstract Background The X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM) is a rare congenital disease. Its main symptoms are hypotonia, dysmorphic facial features, respiratory failure, and feeding disorder. Case presentation This study reports on a male patient from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, who presented symptoms of congenital myopathy. After eliminating many other possible causes, he was eventually proven to bear a c.197C>G, p.(Thr66Arg) MTM1 mutation, a variant of uncertain significance, never described in the literature before. Family of the patient underwent the same genetic tests that proved the mother to be the carrier of mutation. Conclusion The article is a first report on abovementioned, newly discovered mutation in MTM1 gene, with high probability leading to the centronuclear myopathy phenotype. It also summarizes the diagnostic process and current state of knowledge about the therapy and prognosis for children with XLMTM. The authors hope that the findings will contribute to the diagnostic process of subsequent patients.

Background Keeping short, unpainted nails is a significant element of effective hand disinfection among nurses. The aim of the study was to examine the qualitative microbiological purity of painted nails after hand disinfection, taking into account the type of the nail varnish. Material and Methods Materials were collected from 188 nurses. The results were compiled according to the type of the nail varnish applied on the nail plate. The control group consisted of 24 nurses with natural nails. An indicator of the effectiveness of hand disinfection was the number and type of bacteria grown from the materials collected from the participants’ hands – from the nail plate, from under the nail plate and from the skin around the nail plate. Results In the case of the nail plate swab method, the highest percentage of pathogenic microorganisms grew on the nails covered with a regular varnish (21.7%, p < 0.05). A long-lasting (10 days on average) regular nail varnish was likely to result in ineffective hand disinfection (p < 0.001). In the test involving dipping the finger in tryptic soy broth combined with the technique of collecting swabs from under the nail plate, the highest percentage of pathogenic microorganisms was grown from the nail plate coated/extended with gel and then painted with a 14.8% hybrid varnish (p < 0.05). Conclusions The risk of growing a pathogenic microorganism after hand disinfection due to nails coated with a conditioner or a hybrid varnish was similar to that of natural nails. A long-lasting regular nail varnish increases the risk of ineffective hand disinfection. Modeling and/or extending the nail plate with a LED/UV light curing gel, and then painting it with a hybrid varnish, also increases the risk of ineffective hand disinfection. Med Pr. 2021;72(1):29–37
