With the release of a large amount of astronomical data, an increasing number of close-in hot Jupiters have been discovered. Calculating their evolutionary curves using star–planet interaction models presents a challenge. To expedite the generation of evolutionary curves for these close-in hot Jupiter systems, we utilized tidal interaction models established on mesa to create 15 745 samples of star–planet systems and 7500 samples of stars. Additionally, we employed a neural network (Multilayer Perceptron – MLP) to predict the evolutionary curves of the systems, including stellar effective temperature, radius, stellar rotation period, and planetary orbital period. The median relative errors of the predicted evolutionary curves were found to be 0.15 per cent, 0.43 per cent, 2.61 per cent, and 0.57 per cent, respectively. Furthermore, the speed at which we generate evolutionary curves exceeds that of model-generated curves by more than four orders of magnitude. We also extracted features of planetary migration states and utilized lightgbm to classify the samples into six categories for prediction. We found that by combining three types that undergo long-term double synchronization into one label, the classifier effectively recognized these features. Apart from systems experiencing long-term double synchronization, the median relative errors of the predicted evolutionary curves were all below 4 per cent. Our work provides an efficient method to save significant computational resources and time with minimal loss in accuracy. This research also lays the foundation for analysing the evolutionary characteristics of systems under different migration states, aiding in the understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of such systems. We present a software package designed to produce photometric light curves and measure rotation periods from full-frame images taken by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which we name ' tessilator '. tessilator is the only publicly available code that will run a full light curve and rotation period (⁠|$P_{\rm rot}$|⁠) analysis based on just a (list of) target identifier(s) or sky position(s) via a simple command-line prompt. This paper sets out to introduce the rationale for developing tessilator , and then describes the methods, considerations, and assumptions for: extracting photometry; dealing with potential contamination; accounting for natural and instrumental systematic effects; light-curve normalization and detrending; removing outliers and unreliable data; and finally, measuring the |$P_{\rm rot}$| value and several periodogram attributes. Our methods have been tuned specifically to optimize TESS light curves and are independent from the pipelines developed by the TESS Science Processing Operations Center (SPOC), meaning tessilator can, in principle, analyse any target across the entire celestial sphere. We compare tessilator |$P_{\rm rot}$| measurements with TESS -SPOC-derived light curves of 1560 (mainly solar-type and low-mass) stars across four benchmark open clusters (Pisces–Eridanus, the Pleiades, the Hyades, and Praesepe) and a sample of nearby field M-dwarfs. From a vetted subsample of 864 targets we find an excellent return of |$P_{\rm rot}$| matches for the first three open clusters (⁠|$\gt 85$|  per cent) and a moderate (⁠|$\sim 60$|  per cent) match for the 700 Myr Praesepe and MEarth sample, which validates tessilator as a tool for measuring |$P_{\rm rot}$|⁠. In recent years, there has been a push to understand how chemical composition affects the magnetic activity levels of main sequence low-mass stars. Results indicate that more metal-rich stars are more magnetically active for a given stellar mass and rotation period. This metallicity dependence has implications for how the rotation periods and activity levels of low-mass stars evolve over their lifetimes. Numerical modelling suggests that at late ages more metal-rich stars should be rotating more slowly and be more magnetically active. In this work, we study the rotation and activity evolution of low-mass stars using a sample of Kepler field stars. We use the gyro-kinematic age dating technique to estimate ages for our sample and use the photometric activity index as our proxy for magnetic activity. We find clear evidence that, at late ages, more metal-rich stars have spun down to slower rotation in agreement with the theoretical modelling. We extend our model of magnetic braking (MB), driven by an α–Ω dynamo mechanism, from fully convective M-dwarfs (FCMDs) to explain the surface and internal spin |$P_\mathrm{spin}$| evolution of partly convective dwarfs (PCDs) starting from the disc-dispersal stage to the main-sequence turn-off. In our model, the spin of the core is governed by shear at the core-envelope boundary while the spin of the envelope is governed by MB and shear. We show that (1) the most massive FCMDs experience a stronger spin-down than PCDs and less massive FCMDs, (2) the stalled spin-down and enhanced activity of K-dwarfs and the pile-up of G-dwarfs older than a few Gyr are stellar-structure and MB-dependent, and weakly dependent on core-envelope coupling effects, (3) our expression of the core-envelope convergence time-scale |$\tau _{\text{converge}}(M_\ast , P_{\text{spin}})$| between a few 10 to 100 Myr strongly depends on stellar structure but weakly on MB strength and shear, such that fast and massive rotators achieve corotation earlier, (4) our estimates of the surface magnetic fields are in general agreement with observations and our wind mass loss evolution explains the weak winds from the solar analog |$\pi ^1$| UMa, and (5) with our model the massive young Sun hypothesis as a solution to the faint young Sun problem can likely be ruled out, because the maximum mass lost by winds from our Sun with our model is about an order of magnitude smaller than required to solve the problem. When a neutron star is spun-up or spun-down, the changing strains in its solid elastic crust can give rise to sudden fractures known as starquakes. Early interest in starquakes focused on their possible connection to pulsar glitches. While modern glitch models rely on pinned superfluid vorticity rather than crustal fracture, starquakes may nevertheless play a role in the glitch mechanism. Recently, there has been interest in the issue of starquakes resulting in non-axisymmetric shape changes, potentially linking the quake phenomenon to the building of neutron star mountains, which would then produce continuous gravitational waves. Motivated by this issue, we present a simple model that extends the energy minimization-based calculations, originally developed to model axisymmetric glitches, to also include non-axisymmetric shape changes. We show that the creation of a mountain in a quake necessarily requires a change in the axisymmetric shape too. We apply our model to the specific problem of the spin-up of an initially non-rotating star, and estimate the maximum mountain that can be built in such a process, subject only to the constraints of energy and angular momentum conservation. The origin of extended main-sequence turn-offs (eMSTO) in star clusters younger than 2 Gyr still challenges our current understanding of stellar evolution. Exploiting data from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), we investigate eMSTOs in a large sample of 32 Galactic open clusters younger than 2.4 Gyr. We first validate Gaia rotational velocities from radial velocity spectrometer spectra by comparing them with literature values and assessing their correlation with magnetic activity measurements from LAMOST spectra. We detect a general positive correlation between turn-off colour and projected stellar rotation, with slow-rotating stars predominantly found on the bluer side of the turn-off. Comparing our observations with theoretical models, we find that the eMSTO morphology is well reproduced by a single population formed with a high rotation rate, and observed with rotation axis inclination ranging between 0° (pole-on) and 90° (edge-on). This contrasts with observations of Magellanic Cloud clusters, where a population of non-rotating stars appears to be ubiquitous in clusters younger than 700 Myr. However, we note that our interpretation, while successfully explaining the overall eMSTO morphology, cannot fully explain the observed projected rotational velocities. Additionally, two young clusters, NGC 3532 and NGC 2287, exhibit moderate evidence of a split-main sequence in colour and rotation, suggesting a possible small spread in the initial rotation rate. Finally, we advise caution in determining the ages of young clusters from non-rotating isochrones, as neglecting the effects of stellar rotation can impact the isochrone dating by up to factors of 5–20 per cent. The presence of extended Main-Sequence Turn-Off (eMSTO) in the open clusters has been attributed to various factors, such as spread in rotation rates, binary stars, and dust-like extinction from stellar excretion discs. We present a comprehensive analysis of the eMSTO in the open cluster NGC 2355. Using spectra from the Gaia –European Southern Observatory (ESO) archives, we find that the stars in the red part of the eMSTO have a higher mean v sin i value of 135.3 |$\pm$| 4.6 km s |$^{-1}$| compared to the stars in the blue part that have an average v sin i equal to 81.3 |$\pm$| 5.6 km s |$^{-1}$|⁠. This suggests that the eMSTO in NGC 2355 is possibly caused by the spread in rotation rates of stars. We do not find any substantial evidence of the dust-like extinction from the eMSTO stars using ultraviolet data from the Swift survey. The estimated synchronization time for low-mass ratio close binaries in the blue part of the eMSTO suggests that they would be mostly slow-rotating if present. However, the stars in the blue part of the eMSTO are preferentially located in the outer region of the cluster indicating that they may lack low-mass ratio close binaries. The spread in rotation rates of eMSTO stars in NGC 2355 is most likely caused by the star-disc interaction mechanism. The stars in the lower main sequence beyond the eMSTO region of NGC 2355 are slow rotating (mean v sin i = 26.5 |$\pm$| 1.3 km s |$^{-1}$|⁠) possibly due to the magnetic braking of their rotations. General-relativistic equilibria of differentially rotating stars are expected in a number of astrophysical scenarios, from core-collapse supernovae to the remnant of binary neutron-star mergers. The latter, in particular, have been the subject of extensive studies where they were modelled with a variety of laws of differential rotation with varying degree of realism. Starting from accurate and fully general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron-star mergers with various equations of state and mass ratios, we establish the time when the merger remnant has reached a quasi-stationary equilibrium and extract in this way realistic profiles of differential rotation. This allows us to explore how well traditional laws reproduce such differential-rotation properties and to derive new laws of differential rotation that better match the numerical data in the low-density Keplerian regions of the remnant. In this way, we have obtained a novel and somewhat surprising result: the dynamical stability line to quasi-radial oscillations computed from the turning-point criterion can have a slope that is not necessarily negative with respect to the central rest-mass density, as previously found with traditional differential-rotation laws. Indeed, for stellar models reproducing well the properties of the merger remnants, the slope is actually positive, thus reflecting remnants with angular momentum at large distances from the rotation axis, and hence with cores having higher central rest-mass densities and slower rotation rates. We present the comprehensive analysis of the high-amplitude |$\delta$| Sct star V2367 Cygni. First, we perform the frequency analysis for the whole available set of the Kepler and TESS photometry. Most of the frequency peaks are harmonics or combinations of the three known independent frequencies with the highest amplitudes, i.e. |$\nu _1=5.661\,06$|  d |$^{-1}$|⁠ , |$\nu _2=7.14898$|  d |$^{-1}$|⁠ , and |$\nu _3=7.77557$|  d |$^{-1}$|⁠. The total number of independent frequencies is 26 and 25 from the Kepler and TESS light curve, respectively. Then, using the |${\it UBVRI}$| time-series photometry, we unambiguously identify the dominant frequency |$\nu _1$| as the radial mode, whereas in the case of frequencies |$\nu _2$| and |$\nu _3$| the most probable mode degrees are |$\ell =0$| or |$\ell =2$|⁠. However, only the frequency |$\nu _2$| can be associated with a radial mode, and only if higher order effects of rotation are taken into account. Including the rotational mode coupling, we constructed complex seismic models of V2367 Cyg, which fit |$\nu _1$| and |$\nu _2$| as radial modes, and reproduce the amplitude of bolometric flux variations (the parameter f) for the dominant mode. The empirical values of f are derived from the |${\it UBVRI}$| amplitudes and phases. We rely on the Bayesian analysis based on Monte Carlo simulations to derive constraints on evolutionary stage, mass, rotation, overshooting from the convective core, and efficiency of convective transport in the envelope. Our seismic analysis clearly indicates that V2367 Cyg is in a post-main sequence phase of evolution. In our Galactic Centre, about |$10\,000$| to |$100\,000$| stars are estimated to have survived tidal disruption events, resulting in partially disrupted remnants. These events occur when a supermassive black hole (SMBH) tidally interacts with a star, but not enough to completely disrupt the star. We use the 1D stellar evolution code Kepler and the 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics code Phantom to model the tidal disruption of 1, 3, and |$10\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| stars at zero-age main sequence (ZAMS), middle-age main sequence (MAMS), and terminal-age main sequence (TAMS). We map the disruption remnants into Kepler in order to understand their post-distribution evolution. We find distinct characteristics in the remnants, including increased radius, rapid core rotation, and differential rotation in the envelope. The remnants undergo composition mixing that affects their stellar evolution. Although the remnants formed by disruption of ZAMS models evolve similarly to unperturbed models of the same mass, for MAMS and TAMS stars, the remnants have higher luminosity and effective temperature. Potential observational signatures include peculiarities in nitrogen and carbon abundances, higher luminosity, rapid rotation, faster evolution, and unique tracks in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. The properties of blue supergiants are key for constraining the end of the main sequence (MS) of massive stars. Whether the observed drop in the relative number of fast-rotating stars below ≈21 kK is due to enhanced mass-loss rates at the location of the bistability jump, or the result of the end of the MS is still debated. Here, we combine newly derived estimates of photospheric and wind parameters with Gaia distances and wind terminal velocities from the literature to obtain upper limits on the mass-loss rates for a sample of 116 Galactic luminous blue supergiants. The parameter space covered by the sample ranges between 35–15 kK in Teff and 4.8–5.8 dex in log(L/L⊙). Our results show no increase in the mass-loss rates over the bistability jump. Therefore, we argue that the drop in rotational velocities cannot be explained by enhanced mass loss. Since a large jump in the mass-loss rates is commonly included in evolutionary models, we suggest an urgent revision of the default prescriptions currently in use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Lithium (Li) abundance is an age indicator for G, K, and M stellar types, as its abundance decreases over time for these spectral types. However, despite all of the observational efforts made over the past few decades, the role of rotation, stellar activity, and metallicity in the depletion of Li is still unclear. Aims. Our purpose is to investigate how Li depletion is affected by rotation and metallicity in G and K members of the roughly Pleiades-aged open cluster M35. Methods. We have collected an initial sample of 165 candidate members observed with the WIYN/Hydra spectrograph. In addition, we have taken advantage of three previous spectroscopic studies of Li in M35. As a result, we have collected a final sample of 396 stars observed with the same instrument, which we have classified as non-members, possible non-members, possible members, and probable members of the cluster. We have measured iron abundances, Li equivalent widths, and Li abundances for the 110 M35 members added to the existing sample by this study. Finally, rotation periods for cluster members have been obtained from the literature or derived from Zwicky Transient Facility light curves. Results. We have confirmed that fast G and K rotators are Li-rich in comparison with slow rotators of similar effective temperature. This trend, which is also seen in previous studies, is more evident when binaries are not taken into account. Furthermore, while we derived an average metallicity of [Fe/H] = −0.26 ± 0.09 from our spectra, the distribution of Li in M35 is similar to those observed for the Pleiades and M34 open clusters, which have solar metallicity and slightly different ages. In addition, we have shown that an empirical relationship proposed to remove the contribution of the Fe I line at 670.75 nm to the blended feature at 670.78 nm overestimates by 5–15 mÅ the contribution of this iron line for M35 members. Conclusions. M35 fast G and K rotators have depleted less Li than their slower counterparts. Furthermore, a 0.2−0.3 dex difference in metallicity appears to make little difference in the Li distributions of open clusters with ages between 100 and 250 Myr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies of the rotation and activity of M type stars are essential in order to enhance our understanding of stellar dynamos and angular momentum evolution. Using the outstanding photometric capabilities of space telescopes, even those rotation signals with low amplitudes can now be investigated in previously unrivaled detail. By combining data of K2 and the TESS prime mission, the star spot activity of M dwarfs can be monitored over a timescale of half a decade. In the framework of our study on the rotation–activity relation for bright and nearby M dwarfs, we also aim to investigate their long-term activity. While K2 was observing fields distributed around the ecliptic plane, the TESS prime mission was oriented along a line of ecliptic longitude, with one camera centered on an ecliptic pole. Due to these different observing strategies, the overlap between K2 and the TESS prime mission is marginal. However, 45 stars from our sample were observed with both missions, and of these, two early M-type stars that fulfill our selection criteria, EPIC 202059229 and EPIC 245919787, were analyzed in more detail. We find that, for both stars, the rotation period did not change, while the rotational phase did change for EPIC 245919787 by ∼0.2. The amplitude of the spot-induced variability changed for both stars but more significantly for EPIC 245919787. By comparing the cumulative flare frequency distributions, we find that the flare activity for EPIC 202059229 is unchanged, while it slightly changes for EPIC 245919787 between the K2 and TESS epochs. Using a combination of light curves from K2 and TESS that span a baseline of up to 4.5 yr, we are able to measure significant differential rotation for EPIC 245919787. Furthermore, we show that combining missions like K2 and TESS is a promising method for detecting stellar activity cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Understanding the effects of rotation in stellar evolution is key to modelling early-type stars, half of which have equatorial velocities over 100 km s−1. The nearby star Altair is an example of such fast-rotating stars, and furthermore, it has the privilege of being modelled by a detailed 2D concordance model that reproduces most of its observables. Aims. The aim of this paper is to include new asteroseismic frequencies to improve our knowledge of Altair, especially its age. Methods. We processed images of Altair obtained during July 2022 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite using the halo photometry technique to obtain its light curve over this observation period. Results. By analysing the light curve, we derived a set of 22 new frequencies in the oscillation spectrum of Altair and confirmed 12 previously known frequencies. Compared with model predictions, we could associate ten frequencies with ten axisymmetric modes. This identification is based on the modelled visibility of the modes. Moreover, nine of the modelled frequencies can be adjusted to simultaneously match their corresponding observed frequencies, once the core hydrogen mass fraction of the concordance model is set to Xcore/Xini ≃ 0.972, with Xini = 0.739. Using the combined results of a 1D MESA model computing the pre-main sequence and a 2D time-dependent ESTER model computing the main sequence, we find that this core hydrogen abundance sets the age of Altair to 88 ± 10 Myr, which is slightly younger than previous estimates. Aims. We aim to measure the impact of our mass-loss recipe in the evolution of massive stars at the metallicity of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Methods. We used the Geneva-evolution code (GENEC) to run evolutionary tracks for stellar masses ranging from 20 to 85 M⊙ at SMC metallicity (ZSMC = 0.002). We upgraded the recipe for stellar winds by replacing Vink's formula with our self-consistent m-CAK prescription, which reduces the value of the mass-loss rate, Ṁ, by a factor of between two and six depending on the mass range. Results. The impact of our new [weaker] winds is wide, and it can be divided between direct and indirect impact. For the most massive models (60 and 85 M⊙) with Ṁ ≳ 2 × 10−7M⊙ yr−1, the impact is direct because lower mass loss make stars remove less envelope, and therefore they remain more massive and less chemically enriched at their surface at the end of their main sequence (MS) phase. For the less massive models (20 and 25 M⊙) with Ṁ ≲ 2 × 10−8M⊙ yr−1, the impact is indirect because lower mass loss means the stars keep high rotational velocities for a longer period of time, thus extending the H-core burning lifetime and subsequently reaching the end of the MS with higher surface enrichment. In either case, given that the conditions at the end of the H-core burning change, the stars will lose more mass during their He-core burning stages anyway. For the case of Mzams = 20–40 M⊙, our models predict stars will evolve through the Hertzsprung gap, from O-type supergiants to blue supergiants (BSGs), and finally red supergiants (RSGs), with larger mass fractions of helium compared to old evolution models. New models also sets the minimal initial mass required for a single star to become a Wolf-Rayet (WR) at metallicity Z = 0.002 at Mzams = 85 M⊙. Conclusions. These results reinforce the importance of upgrading mass-loss prescriptions in evolution models, in particular for the earlier stages of stellar lifetime, even for Z ≪ Z⊙. New values for Ṁ need to be complemented with upgrades in additional features such as convective-core overshooting and distribution of rotational velocities, besides more detailed spectroscopical observations from projects such as XShootU, in order to provide a robust framework for the study of massive stars at low-metallicity environments. Context. Numerical computations of stellar oscillations for models representative of B-type stars predict fewer modes to be excited than observations reveal from modern space-based photometric data. One shortcoming of state-of-the-art evolution models of B-type stars that may cause a lack of excited modes is the absence of microscopic diffusion in most such models. Aims. We investigate whether the inclusion of microscopic diffusion in stellar models of B-type stars, notably radiative levitation experienced by isotopes, leads to extra mode driving by the opacity mechanism compared to the case of models that do not include microscopic diffusion. Methods. We consider the case of slowly to moderately rotating stars and use non-rotating equilibrium models, while we account for (uniform) rotation in the computations of the pulsation frequencies. We calculate 1D stellar structure and evolution models with and without microscopic diffusion and examine the effect of radiative levitation on mode excitation, for both low-radial order pressure and gravity modes and for high-radial order gravity modes. As is common practice in asteroseismology, rotation is included in the pulsation computations according to the mode's frequency regime. For modes having frequencies below twice the rotation frequency, that is, modes in the sub-inertial regime, we adopt the traditional approximation of rotation. For modes in the super-inertial regime with frequency above twice the rotation frequency, rotation is treated perturbatively up to first order in the rotation. We consider macroscopic envelope mixing induced by internal gravity waves to compute the modes and study its effect on the surface abundances. Results. We find systematically more modes to be excited for the stellar models including microscopic diffusion compared to those without it, in agreement with observational findings of pulsating B-type dwarfs. Furthermore, the models with microscopic diffusion predict that excited modes occur earlier on in the evolution compared to modes without it. In order to maintain realistic surface abundances during the main sequence, we include macroscopic envelope mixing by internal gravity waves. Along with microscopic diffusion, such macroscopic envelope mixing ensures both more excited modes and surface abundances consistent with spectroscopic studies of B-type stars. Conclusions. While radiative levitation has so far largely been neglected in stellar evolution computations of B-type stars for computational convenience, it impacts mode excitation predictions for stellar models of such stars. Context. In 2020, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observed a rapidly rotating M7 dwarf, TIC 277539431, producing a flare at 81° latitude, the highest latitude flare located to date. This is in stark contrast to solar flares that occur much closer to the equator, typically below 30°. The mechanisms that allow flares at high latitudes to occur are poorly understood. Aims. We studied five sectors of TESS monitoring, and obtained 36 ks of XMM-Newton observations to investigate the coronal and flaring activity of TIC 277539431. Methods. From the observations, we infer the optical flare frequency distribution; flare loop sizes and magnetic field strengths; the soft X-ray flux, luminosity, and coronal temperatures; as well as the energy, loop size, and field strength of a large flare in the XMM-Newton observations. Results. We find that the corona of TIC 277539431 does not differ significantly from other low-mass stars on the canonical saturated activity branch with respect to coronal temperatures and flaring activity, but shows lower luminosity in soft X-ray emission by about an order of magnitude, consistent with other late M dwarfs. Conclusions. The lack of X-ray flux, the high-latitude flare, the star's viewing geometry, and the otherwise typical stellar corona taken together can be explained by the migration of flux emergence to the poles in rapid rotators like TIC 277539431 that drain the star's equatorial regions of magnetic flux, but preserve its ability to produce powerful flares. Aims. The most reliable sources for determining absolute stellar parameters are the double-lined eclipsing binary systems. Some of these systems also show apsidal motion, characterized by the variable log k2. This point grants us the possibility of investigating the stellar interior, specifically the degree of stellar mass concentration. The first studies carried out about four decades ago on this topic showed appreciable discrepancies not only with respect to the comparison between the observed absolute dimensions and their theoretical counterparts, but mainly concerning the degree of mass concentration through the analysis of their apsidal motions. Fortunately, this scenario has been gradually improving with the advances in the quality of observational techniques and advances in the input physics of the evolutionary stellar models (e.g. opacities, thermonuclear reactions, equations of state, numerical techniques). These new developments in the input physics has improved the comparison between observations and the values predicted by theory, including the apsidal motion rates. This progress has lead us to investigate second-order effects such as rotation and dynamic tides. In this paper we deal with the effects of rotation on the degree of mass concentration. Methods. The stellar models were calculated using the MESA package. The mass range studied here was 0.40–25.0 M⊙ for a generic chemical composition characterized by X = 0.70 and Z = 0.02. The present models were computed without taking into account core overshooting in order to highlight the effects of rotation. Each model was followed from the pre-main sequence until the central hydrogen content is of the order of or less than 0.03, covering the range of masses and evolutionary status of the double-lined eclipsing binaries showing apsidal motion. Regarding the calculation of the internal structure coefficients, we integrated the Radau equation using the fifth-order Runge-Kutta method and a tolerance level of 10−7. As an auxiliary tool, homology transformations have been used to explain, qualitatively, how the equation of state, thermonuclear reactions, and convection impact the degree of mass concentration of the models. Results. In our past studies on the effects of rotation on log k2 an average correction was used for all models together. For this a small range of masses (2.0, 7.0, 15.0 M⊙) has been used. In the present paper the corrections due to the effects of rotation in log k2 are presented for each mass individually and for three evolutionary phases. This point is particularly important, given that these corrections show a clear dependence on the mass and on the evolutionary status. Such corrections can be easily introduced into the theoretical calculation of apsidal motion rates through a linear equation. Context. The first stars might have been fast rotators. This would have important consequences for their radiative, mechanical, and chemical feedback. Aims. We discuss the impact of fast initial rotation on the evolution of massive Population III models and on their nitrogen and oxygen stellar yields. Methods. We explore the evolution of Population III stars with initial masses in the range of 9 M⊙ ≤ Mini ≤ 120 M⊙, starting with an initial rotation on the zero-age main sequence equal to 70% of the critical one. Results. We find that with the physics of rotation considered here, our rapidly rotating Population III stellar models do not follow a homogeneous evolution. They lose very little mass in the case in which mechanical winds are switched on when the surface rotation becomes equal to or larger than the critical velocity. The impact on the ionising flux appears to be modest when compared to moderately rotating models. Fast rotation favours, in models with initial masses above ∼20 M⊙, the appearance of a very extended intermediate convective zone around the H-burning shell during the core He-burning phase. This shell has important consequences for the sizes of the He- and CO-cores, and thus impacts the final fate of stars. Moreover, it has a strong impact on nucleosynthesis, boosting the production of primary 14N. Conclusions. Fast initial rotation significantly impacts the chemical feedback of Population III stars. Context. The final stages of a protoplanetary disk are essential for our understanding of the formation and evolution of planets. Photoevaporation is an important mechanism that contributes to the dispersal of an accretion disk and has significant consequences for the disk's lifetime. However, the combined effects of photoevaporation and star-disk interaction have not been investigated in previous studies. Aims. A photoevaporative disk evolution model including a detailed formulation of the inner star-disk interaction region will improve the understanding of the final stages of disk evolution. Methods. We combined an implicit disk evolution model with a photoevaporative mass-loss profile. By including the innermost disk regions down to 0.01 AU, we could calculate the star-disk interaction, the stellar spin evolution, and the transition from an accreting disk to the propeller regime self-consistently. Starting from an early Class II star-disk system (with an age of 1 Myr), we calculated the long-term evolution of the system until the disk becomes almost completely dissolved. Results. Photoevaporation has a significant effect on disk structure and evolution. The radial extent of the dead zone decreases, and the number of episodic accretion events (outbursts) is reduced by high stellar X-ray luminosities. Reasonable accretion rates (>10−8M⊙yr) in combination with photoevaporative gaps are possible for a dead zone that is still massive enough to develop episodic accretion events. Furthermore, the stellar spin evolution during the Class II evolution is less affected by the star-disk interaction in the case of high X-ray luminosities. Conclusions. Our results suggest that the formation of planets, especially habitable planets, in the dead zone is strongly impaired in the case of strong X-ray luminosities. Context. The manifestation of surface spots on magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars is most commonly explained by the atomic diffusion theory, which requires a calm stellar atmosphere and only moderate rotation. While very successful and well described, this theory still needs to be revised and fine-tuned to the observations. Aims. Our study aims to enlarge the sample of known photometrically variable mCP stars (ACV variables) to pave the way for more robust and significant statistical studies. We derive accurate physical parameters for these objects and discuss our results in the framework of the atomic diffusion theory. Methods. We studied 1314 candidate ACV variables that were selected from the Zwicky Transient Factory catalogue of periodic variables based on light curve characteristics. We investigated these objects using photometric criteria, a colour-magnitude diagram, and spectroscopic data from the LAMOST and Gaia missions to confirm their status as ACV variables. Results. We present a sample of 1232 new ACV variables, including information on distance from the Sun, mass, fractional age on the main sequence, fraction of the radius between the zero-age and terminal-age main sequence, and the equatorial velocity and its ratio to the critical velocity. Conclusions. Our results confirm that the employed selection process is highly efficient for detecting ACV variables. We have identified 38 stars with vequ in excess of 150 km s−1 (with extreme values up to 260 km s−1). We present the discovery of three super-Earth candidates orbiting HD 48948, a bright K-dwarf star with an apparent magnitude of |$m_V$|  = 8.58 mag. As part of the HARPS-N Rocky Planet Search programme, we collect 189 high-precision radial velocity measurements using the HARPS-N spectrograph from 2013 October 6, to 2023 April 16. Various methodologies are applied to extract the radial velocities from the spectra, and we conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of the outcomes obtained through these diverse extraction techniques. To ensure the robustness of our findings, we employ several methods to address stellar variability, with a focus on Gaussian Process regression. To account for the impact of stellar variability and correlated noise in the radial velocity data set, we include activity indicators, such as |$\log R^{^{\prime }}_{\mathrm{HK}}$| and bisector span, in the multidimensional Gaussian Process regression. Our analysis reveals three planetary candidates with orbital periods of 7.3, 38, and 151 d, and minimum masses estimated at |$4.88 \pm 0.21$| M |$_{\oplus }$|⁠ , |$7.27 \pm 0.70$| M |$_{\oplus }$|⁠ , and |$10.59 \pm 1.00$| M |$_{\oplus }$|⁠ , respectively. The outermost planet resides within the (temperate) habitable zone, positioned at a projected distance of |$0.029\,{\rm arcsec}$| from its star. Given the close proximity of this planetary system, situated at a distance of 16.8 parsecs, HD 48498 emerges as a promising target (closest super-Earth around FGK stars) for future high-contrast direct imaging and high-resolution spectroscopic studies. Aims. The most reliable sources for determining absolute stellar parameters are the double-lined eclipsing binary systems. Some of these systems also show apsidal motion, characterized by the variable log k2. This point grants us the possibility of investigating the stellar interior, specifically the degree of stellar mass concentration. The first studies carried out about four decades ago on this topic showed appreciable discrepancies not only with respect to the comparison between the observed absolute dimensions and their theoretical counterparts, but mainly concerning the degree of mass concentration through the analysis of their apsidal motions. Fortunately, this scenario has been gradually improving with the advances in the quality of observational techniques and advances in the input physics of the evolutionary stellar models (e.g. opacities, thermonuclear reactions, equations of state, numerical techniques). These new developments in the input physics has improved the comparison between observations and the values predicted by theory, including the apsidal motion rates. ABSTRACT: In many rotating fluids, the lowest order force balance is between gravity, pressure, and rotational acceleration (‘GPR’ balance). Terrestrial GPR balance takes the form of geostrophy and hydrostasy, which together yield the terrestrial thermal wind equation. By contrast, stellar GPR balance is an oblateness equation, which determines the departures of the thermal variables from spherical symmetry; its curl yields the ‘stellar thermal wind equation’. In this sense, the stellar thermal wind should be viewed not as a consequence of geostrophy, but of baroclinicity in the oblateness. Here, we treat the full stellar oblateness, including the thermal wind, using pressure coordinates. We derive the generalized stellar thermal wind equation and identify the parameter regime for which it holds. In the case of the Sun, not considering the full oblateness has resulted in conflicting calculations of the theoretical aspherical temperature anomaly. We provide new calculation here and find that the baroclinic anomaly is ∼3–60 times smaller than the barotropic anomaly. Thus, the anomaly from the thermal wind may not be measurable helioseismically, but if measurement were possible, this would potentially yield a new way to bracket the depth of the solar tachocline.

In the standard two-component crust-superfluid model of a neutron star, timing noise can arise when the two components are perturbed by stochastic torques. Here it is demonstrated how to analyse fluctuations in radio pulse times of arrival with a Kalman filter to measure physical properties of the two-component model, including the crust-superfluid coupling time-scale and the variances of the crust and superfluid torques. The analysis technique, validated previously on synthetic data, is applied to observations with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope of the representative pulsar PSR J1359−6038. It is shown that the two-component model is preferred to a one-component model, with log Bayes factor 6.81 ± 0.02. The coupling time-scale and the torque variances on the crust and superfluid are measured with 90 per cent confidence to be |$10^{7.1^{+0.8}_{-0.5}}$| |$\rm {s}$| and |$10^{-24.0^{+0.4}_{-5.6}}$| |$\rm {rad^2~s^{-3}}$| and |$10^{-21.7^{+3.5}_{-0.9}}$| |$\rm {rad^2~s^{-3}}$|⁠ , respectively. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are cosmological radio transients with millisecond durations and extremely high brightness temperatures. One FRB repeater, FRB 180916.J0158+65 (FRB 180916B), was confirmed to appear 16.35-day periodic activities with 5-day activity window. Another FRB repeater, FRB 121102, and two soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), SGR 1935+2154 and SGR 1806−20, also show possible periodic activities. These periodicities might originate from the precession process of young magnetars due to the anisotropic pressure from the inner magnetic fields as proposed in the literature. In this work, we analyse a self-consistent model for the rotation evolution of magnetars and obtain the evolutions of magnetar precession and obliquity. We find that if the FRB repeaters and the SGRs with (possible) periodic activities originate from the magnetar precession, their ages would be constrained to be hundreds to tens of thousands of years, which is consistent with the typical ages of magnetars. Assuming that the FRB emission is beaming in the magnetosphere as proposed in the literature, we calculate the evolution of the observable probability and the duty cycle of the active window period. We find that for a given magnetar the observable probability increases with the magnetar age in the early stage and decreases with the magnetar age in the later stage; meanwhile, there are one or two active windows in one precession period if the emission is not perfectly axisymmetric with respect to the deformation axis of a magnetar, which could be tested by the future observation for repeating FRB sources. Young α-rich (YAR) stars within the old Galactic thick disc exhibit a dual characteristic of relative youth determined with asteroseismology and abundance enhancement in α elements measured from high-resolution spectroscopy. The youth origin of YAR stars has been proposed to be binary evolution via mass transfer or stellar mergers. If that is the case, YAR stars should spin rapidly and thus be magnetically active, because they are mass and angular momentum gainers. In this study, to seek this binary footprint, we select YAR stars on the main-sequence turn-off or the subgiant branch (MSTO-SGB) from APOGEE DR17, whose ages and projected rotation velocities (v sin  i) can be precisely measured. With APOGEE v sin  i and LAMOST spectra, we find that YAR stars are indeed fast rotators and magnetically active. In addition, we observe low [C/N] ratios and high Gaia RUWE in some YAR stars, suggesting that these MSTO-SGB stars probably have experienced mass transfer from red-giant companions. Our findings underscore that magnetic activity can serve as a valuable tool for probing the binary evolution for other chemically peculiar stars, such as red giants with lithium anomalies and carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars. We use the magnetic field components measured by Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) to calculate the stellar surface force and torque due to magnetic stresses for the fast rotators σ Ori E, 36 Lyn, and CU Vir, and the slow rotator τ Sco. If we assume the stars have spherical photospheres, the estimated torques give spin-down time-scales no larger than 7 × 105 yr. For σ Ori E, the predicted spin-down time-scale, ≃ 6000 yr, is much less than the observationally measured time-scale of ≃ 106 yr. However, for CU Vir, we find that the spin-down time-scale from its ZDI map is 7 × 105 yr in good agreement with its average rate of spin-down from 1960 to 2010. With the exception of τ Sco, the net force due to magnetic stresses at the stellar surface are large compared to the surface-integrated pressure. We discuss possible reasons for the large values of the forces (and torques), and suggest that the likely explanation is that rotation and the magnetic stresses create significant departures from spherical symmetry. This study investigates the influence of different braking mechanisms on the formation of three long-period radio pulsars (PSRs J0250+5854, J2251−3711, and J0901−4046): plasma-filled magnetosphere in combination with magnetic field decay, fall-back disc, and r-mode instability. These braking mechanisms can also affect the thermal evolution of pulsars. By comparing the model-predicted values with observational data such as spin periods, period derivatives, and upper limits of the bolometric luminosity of these pulsars, we find that these three braking mechanisms can reasonably explain the spin period and the period derivative within a certain range of parameters for these sources. The model-predicted bolometric luminosity associated with magnetic field dissipation exceeds the upper limit for PSR J0901−4046 but falls below the upper limits for PSR J0250+5854 and PSR J2251−3711. The model-predicted bolometric luminosity within the fall-back disc model exceeds the observed results, whereas the luminosity within the r-mode instability falls below the observed upper limit for these three pulsars. However, a conflict arises when we consider the pulsar radio activity and the accretion phases within the fall-back disc model simultaneously. By combining data from radio and X-ray observations, along with precise measurements of surface thermal emissions, we can enhance our understanding of the braking mechanisms involved in the formation of long-period radio pulsars or constrain key model parameters. Finding more long-period pulsars in the future and conducting multiband observations will enhance our understanding of the formation and nature of long-period radio pulsars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Binary stars cannot be fully understood without assessing the interaction effects between the two components and the impact of these effects on observational diagnostics. Periastron brightening events, also known as the heartbeat phenomenon, are a clear manifestation of this type of interaction. Aims. We aim to explore the role of tidal shear energy dissipation in stars undergoing periastron brightening events. Methods. We performed a computation from first principles that uses a quasi-hydrodynamic Lagrangian scheme to simultaneously solve the orbital motion and the equations of motion of a 3D grid of volume elements covering the inner, rigidly rotating "core" of a tidally perturbed star. The equations of motion include the gravitational acceleration of both stars, the centrifugal, Coriolis, gas pressure accelerations, and viscous coupling between volume elements. The method is illustrated for a grid of model binary systems with a 10 M⊙ primary that is perturbed by a 6.97 M⊙ companion in eccentric orbits (e = 0 − 0.7). The model is then applied to the heartbeat star MACHO 80.7443.1718. Results. We find an increase by factors ∼10−6–10−3 in tidal shear energy dissipation at periastron, consistent with the majority of observed heartbeat stars. The magnitude of the periastron effect correlates with the degree of departure from synchronicity: stars rotating much faster or much slower than the synchronous rate at periastron present the strongest effect. We confirm that for eccentricities ≤0.3, pseudo-synchronization occurs for 0.8 < ω/Ωave < 1, where Ωave is the average orbital angular velocity. The minimum energy rotation rate (pseudo-synchronism) for e = 0.5 and 0.7 occurs for 1.0 < ω/Ωave < 1.15. The tidal shear energy dissipation model reproduces from first principles the ∼23% maximum brightness enhancement at periastron of MACHO 80.7443.1718. Conclusions. Our results suggest that the magnitude and shape of the heartbeat signal may serve as diagnostics for the internal stellar rotation and turbulent viscosity values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The theory of rotational and chemical evolution is incomplete, thereby limiting the accuracy of model-dependent stellar mass and age determinations. The γ Doradus (γ Dor) pulsators are excellent points of calibration for the current state-of-the-art stellar evolution models, as their gravity modes probe the physical conditions in the deep stellar interior. Yet, individual asteroseismic modelling of these stars is not always possible because of insufficient observed oscillation modes. Aims. This paper presents a novel method to derive distributions of the stellar mass, age, core-boundary mixing efficiency, and initial rotation rates for γ Dor stars. Methods. We computed a grid of rotating stellar evolution models covering the entire γ Dor instability strip. We then used the observed distributions of the luminosity, effective temperature, buoyancy travel time, and near-core rotation frequency of a sample of 539 stars to assign a statistical weight to each of our models. This weight is a measure of how likely the combination of a specific model is. We then computed weighted histograms to derive the most likely distributions of the fundamental stellar properties. Results. We find that the rotation frequency at zero-age main sequence follows a normal distribution, peaking at around 25% of the critical Keplerian rotation frequency. The probability-density function for extent of the core-boundary mixing zone, given by a factor of fCBM times the local pressure scale height (assuming an exponentially decaying parameterisation), decreases linearly with increasing fCBM. Conclusions. Converting the distribution of fractions of critical rotation at the zero-age main sequence to units of d−1, we find most F-type stars start the main sequence with a rotation frequency between 0.5 d−1 and 2 d−1. Stellar population synthesis (SPS) is essential for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. However, the recent discovery of rotation-driven phenomena in star clusters warrants a review of uncertainties in SPS models caused by overlooked factors, including stellar rotation. In this study, we investigated the impact of rotation on SPS specifically using the PARSEC V2.0 rotation model and its implications for high-redshift galaxies with the JWST. Rotation enhances the ultraviolet (UV) flux for up to ∼400 Myr after the starburst, with the slope of UV increasing as the population becomes faster rotating and metal-poorer. Using the Prospector tool, we constructed simulated galaxies and deduce their properties associated with dust and star formation. Our results suggest that rapid rotation models result in a gradual UV slope up to 0.1 dex higher and an approximately 50% increase in dust attenuation for identical wide-band spectral energy distributions. Furthermore, we investigated biases if the stellar population was characterized by rapid rotation and demonstrate that accurate estimation can be achieved for rotation rates up to ωi = 0.6. Accounting for the bias in the case of rapid rotation aligns specific star formation rates more closely with predictions from theoretical models. Notably, this also implies a slightly higher level of dust attenuation than previously anticipated, while still allowing for a "dust-free" interpretation of the galaxy. The impact of rapid rotation SPS models on the rest-UV luminosity function is found to be minimal. Context. Estimating the physical states of the surfaces of fast-rotating stars is challenging due to several intrinsic processes, which include radiative flux inhomogeneities on the photosphere induced by rotation and circumstellar signatures in their spectra. The analysis of their spectra ultimately requires the use of synthetic grids of spectra accounting for all these physical processes. Aims. In this paper, we present the 'von ZeiPEl's code for gravity darKening specTRal synthesis' (ZPEKTR) code, which is designed to perform the spectral synthesis of fast-rotating stars, accounting for gravity darkening, limb-darkening effects in the continuum and geometrical deformation induced by fast rotation. Methods. We consider colatitudinal temperature and surface-gravity variations, assuming both the classical prescription developed by von Zeipel and the new formulation by Espinosa-Lara. The code runs either with a rectangular or a triangular mesh on the stellar surface. We compare the temperature and gravitational distribution as a function of the stellar latitude arising from both models. Results. The line profiles of He I 4388, 4471, 4922, and 6678 Å produced with both formalisms are compared at three different rotation rates and illustrate differences in shape and central intensity. We also illustrate the fittings of 31 line spectra of classical Be stars averaged from the Be Stars Observation Survey (BeSOS) database and make a comparison among their apparent physical parameters and ages determined from plane-parallel non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (non-LTE) models and parameters determined from classical von Zeipel models, finding a displacement of more evolved objects towards the zero-age main sequence. We also compare the distributions of projected rotation velocities of these objects obtained with and without the inclusion of gravity-darkening effects with ZPEKTR. Conclusions. We observe a shift of the histogram of rotation velocities calculated accounting for effects of gravity darkening concerning rotation velocities obtained through the fittings with classical plane-parallel non-LTE models. We show that models that do not account for gravity darkening can underestimate the rotation velocity, because the stellar latitudes that contribute the higher velocities are those in the equator with the least radiative flux. We envisage near-future improvements to the code, such as the inclusion of differential rotation and treatment of tidal forces in binary stellar systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The Li abundance observed in pre-main sequence and main sequence late-type stars is strongly age-dependent, but also shows a complex pattern depending on several parameters, such as rotation, chromospheric activity, and metallicity. The best way to calibrate these effects, and with the aim of studying Li as an age indicator for FGK stars, is to calibrate coeval groups of stars, such as open clusters (OCs) and associations. Aims. We present a considerable target sample of 42 OCs and associations – with an age range from 1 Myr to 5 Gyr – observed within the Gaia-ESO survey (GES), and using the latest data provided by GES iDR6 and the most recent release of Gaia that was then available, EDR3. As part of this study, we update and improve the membership analysis for all 20 OCs presented in our previous article. Methods. We perform detailed membership analyses for all target clusters to identify likely candidates, using all available parameters provided by GES, complemented with detailed bibliographical searches, and based on numerous criteria: from radial velocity distributions, to the astrometry (proper motions and parallaxes) and photometry provided by Gaia, to gravity indicators (log g and the γ index), [Fe/H] metallicity, and Li content in diagrams of (Li equivalent widths) EW(Li) versus Teff. Results. We obtain updated lists of cluster members for the whole target sample, as well as a selection of Li-rich giant contaminants obtained as an additional result of the membership process. Each selection of cluster candidates was thoroughly contrasted with numerous existing membership studies using data from Gaia to ensure the most robust results. Conclusions. These final cluster selections will be used in the third and last paper of this series, which reports the results of a comparative study characterising the observable Li dispersion in each cluster and analysing its dependence on several parameters, allowing us to calibrate a Li–age relation and obtain a series of empirical Li envelopes for key ages in our sample. We present spot properties on 32 periodic young stellar objects in IC 5070. Long term, ∼5 yr, light curves in the V, R , and I -bands are obtained through the HOYS (Hunting Outbursting Young Stars) citizen science project. These are dissected into 6 months long slices, with 3 months oversampling, to measure 234 sets of amplitudes in all filters. We fit 180 of these with reliable spot solutions. Two thirds of spot solutions are cold spots, the lowest is 2150 K below the stellar temperature. One third are warm spots that are above the stellar temperature by less than ∼2000 K. Cold and warm spots have maximum surface coverage values of 40 per cent, although only 16 per cent of warm spots are above 20 per cent surface coverage as opposed to 60 per cent of the cold spots. Warm spots are most likely caused by a combination of plages and low-density accretion columns, most common on objects without inner disc excess emission in K − W 2. Five small hot spot solutions have <3 per cent coverage and are 3000–5000 K above the stellar temperature. These are attributed to accretion, and four of them occur on the same object. The majority of our objects are likely to be accreting. However, we observe very few accretion hot spots as either the accretion is not stable on our time-scale or the photometry is dominated by other features. We do not identify cyclical spot behaviour on the targets. We additionally identify and discuss a number of objects that have interesting amplitudes, phase changes, or spot properties. A Cen is recognized as a magnetic variable star with peculiar helium abundance. The presence of large surface spots induces flux modulation, allowing for the derivation of the surface rotational period (∼8.8 d). TESS photometry has unveiled additional signals that we interpreted as SPB-type pulsation. Furthermore, we managed to find a regular period spacing pattern and hence identified pulsational modes. We performed an asteroseismic analysis that resulted in constraints for internal structure of the star. Taking into account the surface rotation period derived from spots and the internal rotation obtained from asteroseismology, we concluded that the gradient of the rotational velocity in the radial direction is very small, indicating nearly solid body rotation. Aims. In this study, we analyse the magnetic field properties of a set of 15 global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of solar-type star dynamos conducted using the ASH code. Our objective is to enhance our understanding of these properties by comparing theoretical results to current observations, and to finally provide fresh insights into the field. Methods. We analysed the rotational and magnetic properties as a function of various stellar parameters (mass, age, and rotation rate) in a 'Sun in time' approach in our extended set of 3D MHD simulations. To facilitate direct comparisons with stellar magnetism observations using various Zeeman-effect techniques, we decomposed the numerical data into vectorial spherical harmonics. Results.A comparison of the trends we find in our simulations set reveals a promising overall agreement with the observational context of stellar magnetism, enabling us to suggest a plausible scenario for the magneto-rotational evolution of solar-type stars. In particular, we find that the magnetic field may reach a minimum amplitude at a transition value of the Rossby number near unity. This may have important consequences on the long-term evolution of solar-type stars, by impacting the relation between stellar age, rotation, and magnetism. The Hunting Outbursting Young Stars (HOYS) project performs long-term, optical, multifilter, high cadence monitoring of 25 nearby young clusters and star-forming regions. Utilizing Gaia  DR3 data, we have identified about 17 000 potential young stellar members in 45 coherent astrometric groups in these fields. Twenty one of them are clear young groups or clusters of stars within 1 kpc and they contain 9143 Gaia selected potential members. The cluster distances, proper motions, and membership numbers are determined. We analyse long-term (≈ 7 yr) V -, R -, and I -band light curves from HOYS for 1687 of the potential cluster members. One quarter of the stars are variable in all three optical filters, and two-thirds of these have light curves that are symmetric around the mean. Light curves affected by obscuration from circumstellar materials are more common than those affected by accretion bursts, by a factor of 2–4. The variability fraction in the clusters ranges from 10 per cent to almost 100 per cent, and correlates positively with the fraction of stars with detectable inner discs, indicating that a lot of variability is driven by the disc. About one in six variables shows detectable periodicity, mostly caused by magnetic spots. Two-thirds of the periodic variables with disc excess emission are slow rotators, and amongst the stars without disc excess two-thirds are fast rotators – in agreement with rotation being slowed down by the presence of a disc. While the mission's primary goal was focused on exoplanet detection and characterization, Kepler made and continues to make extraordinary advances in stellar physics. Stellar rotation and magnetic activity are no exceptions. Kepler allowed for these properties to be determined for tens of thousands of stars from the main sequence up to the red giant branch. From photometry, this can be achieved by investigating the brightness fluctuations due to active regions, which cause surface inhomogeneities, or through asteroseismology as oscillation modes are sensitive to rotation and magnetic fields. This review summarizes the rotation and magnetic activity properties of the single main-sequence solar-like stars within the Kepler field. We contextualize the Kepler sample by comparing it to known transitions in the stellar rotation and magnetic-activity evolution, such as the convergence to the rotation sequence (from the saturated to the unsaturated regime of magnetic activity) and the Vaughan-Preston gap. While reviewing the publicly available data, we also uncover one interesting finding related to the intermediate-rotation gap seen in Kepler and other surveys. We find evidence for this rotation gap in previous ground-based data for the X-ray luminosity. Understanding the complex evolution and interplay between rotation and magnetic activity in solar-like stars is crucial, as it sheds light on fundamental processes governing stellar evolution, including the evolution of our own Sun. The radii of planets serve as significant constraints for their internal structure. Despite the complexity of planetary internal structure compared to stars, substantial advancements have been made in this field. The most critical uncertainties stem from the chemical composition and equation of state of planetary material. Using the MESA code, we construct rotating and non-rotating interior models for Jupiter and Saturn and sought to align these models to the observed radii. Rotation exerts a significant influence on their structures, distorting planetary, and stellar structures in distinct ways. Regarding gas planets' structure, two pivotal uncertain parameters depend on a possible separation between hydrogen and helium in the protosolar disc gas due to unequal evaporation between these two gases. In an extreme scenario where only hydrogen is lost and no heavy elements or helium are lost, Jupiter and Saturn would have a core mass of zero. However, this approach fails to yield a solution for Uranus and Neptune. Instead, our models indicate that hydrogen and helium were likely lost together during the protosolar disc phase, resulting in core masses of approximately 40, 25, 14, and 12 M⊕ for Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus, respectively. These findings are highly compatible with the observed mass–radius relationship of exoplanets, as well as the seismic and Juno data for Jupiter's near-surface temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent surveys of close white dwarf binaries as well as single white dwarfs have provided evidence for the late appearance of magnetic fields in white dwarfs, and a possible generation mechanism, a crystallization and rotation-driven dynamo has been suggested. A key prediction of this dynamo is that magnetic white dwarfs rotate, at least on average, faster than their non-magnetic counterparts and/or that the magnetic field strength increases with rotation. Here we present rotation periods of ten white dwarfs within 40 pc measured using photometric variations. Eight of the light curves come from TESS observations and are thus not biased towards short periods, in contrast to most period estimates that have been reported previously in the literature. These TESS spin periods are indeed systematically shorter than those of non-magnetic white dwarfs. This means that the crystallization and rotation-driven dynamo could be responsible for a fraction of the magnetic fields in white dwarfs. However, the full sample of magnetic white dwarfs also contains slowly rotating strongly magnetic white dwarfs which indicates that another mechanism that leads to the late appearance of magnetic white dwarfs might be at work, either in addition to or instead of the dynamo. The fast-spinning and massive magnetic white dwarfs that appear in the literature form a small fraction of magnetic white dwarfs, and probably result from a channel related to white dwarf mergers. Solar-type stars form with a wide range of rotation rates Ω. A wide Ω range persists until a stellar age of t  ∼ 0.6 Gyr, after which solar-type stars exhibit Skumanich spin-down where Ω ∝  t −1/2. Rotational evolution models incorporating polytropic stellar winds struggle to simultaneously reproduce these two regimes, namely the initially wide Ω range and the Skumanich spin-down without imposing an a priori cap on the wind mass-loss rate. We show that a three-dimensional wind model driven by Alfvén waves and observational data yields wind torques that agree with the observed age distribution of Ω. In our models of the Sun and 27 open cluster stars aged from 0.04 to 0.6 Gyr that have observationally derived surface magnetic maps and rotation rates, we find evidence of exponential spin-down in young stars that are rapid rotators and Skumanich spin-down for slow rotators. The two spin-down regimes emerge naturally from our data-driven models. Our modelling suggests that the observed age distribution of stellar rotation rates Ω arises as a consequence of magnetic field strength saturation in rapid rotators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superfluid vortices pinned to nuclear lattice sites or magnetic flux tubes in a neutron star evolve abruptly through a sequence of metastable spatial configurations, punctuated by unpinning avalanches associated with rotational glitches, as the stellar crust spins down electromagnetically. The metastable configurations are approximately but not exactly axisymmetric, causing the emission of persistent, quasimonochromatic, current quadrupole gravitational radiation. The characteristic gravitational wave strain h 0 as a function of the spin frequency f and distance D from the Earth is bounded above by |$h_0 = 1.2\substack{+1.3 \\ -0.9} \times 10^{-32} (f/30\,\,{\rm Hz})^{2.5} (D/1\,\,{\rm kpc})^{-1}$|⁠ , corresponding to a Poissonian spatial configuration (equal probability per unit area, i.e. zero inter-vortex repulsion), and bounded below by |$h_0 = 1.8\substack{+2.0 \\ -1.5} \times 10^{-50} (f/30\,\,{\rm Hz})^{1.5} (D/1\,\,{\rm kpc})^{-1}$|⁠ , corresponding to a regular array (periodic separation, i.e. maximum inter-vortex repulsion). N -body point vortex simulations predict an intermediate scaling, |$h_0 = 7.3\substack{+7.9 \\ -5.4} \times 10^{-42} (f/30\,\,{\rm Hz})^{1.9} (D/1\,\,{\rm kpc})^{-1}$|⁠ , which reflects a balance between the randomizing but spatially correlated action of superfluid vortex avalanches and the regularizing action of inter-vortex repulsion. The scaling is calibrated by conducting simulations with N v ≤ 5 × 103 vortices and extrapolated to the astrophysical regime N v ∼ 1017(f /30 Hz). Rotationally enhanced red giant stars are astrophysically interesting but rare. In this paper, we present a catalogue of 3217 active red giant candidates in the APOGEE DR16 (Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment – Data Release 16) survey. We use a control sample in the well-studied Kepler fields to demonstrate a strong relationship between rotation and anomalies in the spectroscopic solution relative to typical giants. Stars in the full survey with similar solutions are identified as candidates. We use v sin i measurements to confirm that 50 ± 1.2 per cent of our DR16 candidates are rotationally enhanced (v sin i > 5 km s−1), compared to 4.9 ± 0.2 per cent in the Kepler control sample. In both, the Kepler control sample and a control sample from DR16, we find that there are 3–4 times as many giants rotating with intermediate velocities of 5 < v sin i < 10 km s−1 compared to velocities of v sin i > 10 km s−1, the traditional threshold for rapid rotation for red giants. The vast majority of intermediate rotators are not spectroscopically anomalous. We use binary diagnostics from APOGEE and Gaia to infer a binary fraction of 73 ± 2.4 per cent among the confirmed rotationally enhanced giants in DR16. We identify a significant bias in the reported metallicity for DR16 candidates with complete spectroscopic solutions, with a median offset of −0.37 dex in [M/H] from a control sample. As such, up to 10 per cent of stars with reported [M/H]<−1 are not truly metal poor. Dozens of planets are now discovered with large orbital obliquity, and have become the proof for the dynamical evolution of planetary orbits. In the current samples, there is an apparent clustering of planets around 90°, and also an absence of planets around 180° although the latter is expected by some theories. Statistical extrapolation using Hierarchical Bayesian Analysis have recently refuted the significant clustering around 90° and suggested that the distribution may actually be broader. In this work, the symmetric TESS transit light curve of KELT-19Ab is analysed using gravity darkening to measure its true obliquity. Its large sky projected obliquity |$\lambda = -179.7^{\circ +3.7^\circ }_{\, \, -3.8^\circ }$| makes KELT-19Ab the only currently known planet with obliquity potentially close to 180°. We apply spectroscopic constraints on v sin i and λ as well as theoretical constraints on the limb-darkening coefficients to find that the KELT-19Ab's obliquity is |$\psi = 155^{\circ +17^\circ }_{\, \, -21^\circ }$|⁠ , in favour of a flipped orbit. The result is consistent with the statistically inferred uniformity of obliquity distribution, and also highlights the applicability of the gravity darkening technique to symmetric light curves. The kinematics, mean α-elements, and ages of the stars reveal two distinct disc populations observed in the Solar neighbourhood. Although several studies have been carried out to characterize abundances of chemical elements and kinematic identifications in these populations, there are few studies that dealt with the analysis of stellar rotation and characteristics of populations focused on low-mass stars of the F and G types. In this work, we propose a new approach to classify stellar populations from the thin and thick disc for F and G dwarf stars by relating chemical abundance and rotation (v  sin  i) of these stars in the rotational–chemical–plane (v  sin  i –[α/Fe]–[Fe/H] plot). Our results show that the two rotational-chemical sequences disentangled, high- and low-[α/Fe] components, present properties (α-enhanced, ages, kinematics, space velocity gradients, local density ratio) closely linked to the stars of the chemically and kinematically defined as thin and thick disc components. This study has an impact on calibrations that relate ages to rotation (gyro-chronology) as well as age to chemical abundances (chemochronology), as well as sheds light on the understanding of the processes of Galactic disc formation. We report the discovery of spectroscopic variations in the magnetic DBA white dwarf SDSS J091016.43+210554.2. Follow-up time-resolved spectroscopy at the Apache Point Observatory (APO) and the MMT show significant variations in the H absorption lines over a rotation period of 7.7 or 11.3 h. Unlike recent targets that show similar discrepancies in their H and He line profiles, such as GD 323 and Janus (ZTF J203349.8+322901.1), SDSS J091016.43+210554.2 is confirmed to be magnetic, with a field strength derived from Zeeman-split H and He lines of B ≈ 0.5 MG. Model fits using a H and He atmosphere with a constant abundance ratio across the surface fail to match our time-resolved spectra. On the other hand, we obtain excellent fits using magnetic atmosphere models with varying H/He surface abundance ratios. We use the oblique rotator model to fit the system geometry. The observed spectroscopic variations can be explained by a magnetic inhomogeneous atmosphere where the magnetic axis is offset from the rotation axis by β = 52°, and the inclination angle between the line of sight and the rotation axis is i  = 13–16°. This magnetic white dwarf offers a unique opportunity to study the effect of the magnetic field on surface abundances. We propose a model where H is brought to the surface from the deep interior more efficiently along the magnetic field lines, thus producing H polar caps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a photometric characterization of 208 ultra-cool dwarfs (UCDs) with spectral types between M4 and L4, from 20-s and 2-min cadence TESS light curves. We determine rotation periods for 87 objects (⁠|$\sim 42~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) and identify 778 flare events in 103 UCDs (⁠|$\sim 49.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). For 777 flaring events (corresponding to 102 objects), we derive bolometric energies between 2.1 × 1030 and |$1.1 \times 10^{34}\ \mathrm{erg}$|⁠ , with 56 superflare events. No transiting planets or eclipsing binaries were identified. We find that the fraction of UCDs with rotation and flaring activity is, at least, 20 per cent higher in M4–M6 spectral types than in later UCDs (M7–L4). For spectral types between M4 and L0, we measure the slope of the flare bolometric energy–duration correlation to be γ = 0.497 ± 0.058, which agrees with that found in previous studies for solar-type and M dwarfs. Moreover, we determine the slope of the flare frequency distribution to be α = −1.75 ± 0.04 for M4–M5 dwarfs, α = −1.69 ± 0.04 and α = −1.72 ± 0.1 for M6–M7 and M8–L0 dwarfs, respectively, which are consistent with previous works that exclusively analysed UCDs. These results support the idea that independently of the physical mechanisms that produce magnetic activity, the characteristics of the rotational modulation and flares are similar for both fully convective UCDs and partially convective solar-type and early-M stars. Based on the measured UCD flare distributions, we find that ultraviolet radiation emitted from flares does not have the potential to start prebiotic chemistry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the properties of ∼50 000 rotational variables from the ASAS-SN survey using distances, stellar properties, and probes of binarity from Gaia DR3 and the SDSS APOGEE survey. They have higher amplitudes and span a broader period range than previously studied Kepler rotators. We find they divide into three groups of main sequence stars (MS1, MS2s, MS2b) and four of giants (G1/3, G2, G4s, and G4b). MS1 stars are slowly rotating (10–30 d), likely single stars with a limited range of temperatures. MS2s stars are more rapidly rotating (days) single stars spanning the lower main sequence up to the Kraft break. There is a clear period gap (or minimum) between MS1 and MS2s, similar to that seen for lower temperatures in the Kepler samples. MS2b stars are tidally locked binaries with periods of days. G1/3 stars are heavily spotted, tidally locked RS CVn stars with periods of 10s of days. G2 stars are less luminous, heavily spotted, tidally locked sub-subgiants with periods of ∼10 d. G4s stars have intermediate luminosities to G1/3 and G2, slow rotation periods (approaching 100 d), and are almost certainly all merger remnants. G4b stars have similar rotation periods and luminosities to G4s, but consist of sub-synchronously rotating binaries. We see no difference in indicators for the presence of very wide binary companions between any of these groups and control samples of photometric twin stars built for each group. A sub-set of the 67 Be-type stars observed in 30 Doradus during the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS) campaign have been analysed to estimate atmospheric parameters and chemical compositions, in particular their nitrogen abundance. Reliable results were found for 23 targets comprising the largest Large Magellanic Cloud sample currently available. The nitrogen abundance estimates have been compared with predictions from evolutionary models for rapidly rotating single stars (or non-interacting multiple systems) and for interacting binaries. The observations appear to be incompatible with all the targets having a single star evolutionary history. The results agree better with a binary evolutionary history with at least 30 per cent of the VFTS sample having apparently evolved by this pathway. These conclusions are consistent with a previous analysis of the v e sin i-estimates for this Be-type sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
