16. Science as practical criticism : an investigation into revolutionary subjectivity in Marx's critique of political economy

Abstract

The key theoretical concern of this doctoral research is to trace the way in which Marx discovered and developed the determinations of the revolutionary subjectivity of the working class. In order to achieve this, a critical reading of Marx's 'early writings' from the perspective of his later works was carried out in the first part of the thesis. Specifically, the analysis attempted to find in both the insights and limitations of the former and clues towards the direction that Marx's later development would take. One of the original results of my reassessment of Marx's early work is to uncover the methodological significance of those texts for Marx's re-appropriation of Hegel's dialectical method and the consequent determination of social science as practical criticism. The second part of my investigation consists in a critical analysis of the ways in which these early insights crystallised in the writing of Capital. The aim of this critical reading of Marx's most important work is to provide a reconstruction which goes beyond traditional Marxist theories and their unresolved tension between the forms of objectivity and the forms of subjectivity of capitalist society. In particular, my thesis is that most readings of Marx tend to see revolutionary subjectivity as abstractly free and as the opposite of the subjectivity alienated in capital. My own investigation of Marx's critical theory aims to show that, for him, emancipatory subjectivity itself is a social form of the alienated subjectivity of the modern individual. I show that the genesis of that emancipatory subject can be found in the transformations in the materiality of social life brought about by the real subsumption of humanity to capital. Finally, the investigation attempts to thematise the intrinsic connection between these questions of subjectivity and Marx's dialectical method.

Monográfico: Estructura y dinámica de las cadenas globales de valor, Este artículo muestra que la “ley marxiana del valor” puede ofrecer fundamentos sólidos para la comprensión de la constitución y dinámica de las Cadenas Globales de Valor (CGV). Se establece así una conexión firme entre las dinámicas intraindustriales y la dinámica general del «sistema como un todo», que es precisamente donde reside la mayor debilidad del enfoque de CGV. Estas ideas se muestran luego a través de una discusión más empírica de las transformaciones recientes de la composición y estructura de gobernanza de las CGV, resultantes de la creciente separación entre innovación y fabricación, y el surgimiento de proveedores globales altamente concentrados. This article shows that the Marxian ‘law of value’ can provide solid foundations for the comprehension of the constitution and dynamics of Global Value Chains (GVC). A firm connection is thus established between the particular dynamics internal to each industry and the general dynamics of the ‘system as a whole’, which is where the greatest weakness of the GVC approach lies. Those insights are then shown through a more empirical discussion of recent transformations in the composition and governance structure of GVC resulting from the growing de-linking between innovation and manufacturing and the rise of highly concentrated global suppliers. This article examines the relevance of ground-rent and landed property for the economic and political forms of capital accumulation in Argentina. This specific focus on capitalist development in Argentina is more broadly framed as a theoretical intervention within recent debates on Agrarian Marxism, which addresses the major issues under controversy through the lenses of an original methodologically-minded approach to the Marxian critique of political economy. Empirical quantitative evidence for the theoretical discussion is offered through the presentation of an estimate of ground-rent and its appropriation by landowners between 1993 and 2019. Abstract

This article offers a reply to Werner Bonefeld's recent contribution to the debate on value and abstract labour, in which he critically engages with our previous articles dealing with these questions. We argue that Bonefeld's criticisms are not simply based on disagreements over these controversial issues, but also on a misunderstanding of our stance on abstract labour and value. In addition to clarifying our position, the article provides some brief critical remarks on Bonefeld's own intervention in the debate and shows that his contribution falls to offer a solid analysis of the fundamental categories of the critique of political economy. Abstract

This paper develops a critique of the 'class struggle' theory of value that emerged out of the autonomist Marxist tradition, arguing that although this theory has the merit of putting forward a production-centred, value-form approach, it eventually fails to grasp the determinations of value-producing labour. In particular, the notion of value as a mode of existence of the class struggle inverts the real relation between them and, more importantly, deprives the latter of both its historical specificity and the social and material basis of its transformative powers.
