8. Relationship of “Bloomless” (bm bm) Sorghum to Greenbug Resistance1

Abstract

Parental, F1and F2sorghum [Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench] populations involving the bloomless trait were studied for their reaction to greenbugs (Schizaphis graminumRondani). Plants were grown in pots in the greenhouse, classified into bloom or bloomless (presence or absence of white wax on leaf sheath) categories, rated for greenbug damage, and studied for tolerance, anti. biosis, and non preference. The objective of the researchwas to learn more about the nature of the resistance of bloomless sorghum to greenbugs since bloomless may be useful in commercial sorghums. Bloomless was inherited as a simple recessive with complete dominance of bloom. The tolerance to damage of ‘Shalin Grain’ and ‘IS 809’ by greenbugs was inherited independently of the bloomless trait. The bloomless plants did not exhibit greenbug tolerance as did Shallu Grain and IS 809, except where the two traits were combined in an F2individual plant. Bloomless plants showed only slightly more of an antibiotic effect on greenbugs than the susceptible check and significantly less than the resistance check. In this study, bloomless plants 50 to 70 days old exhibited a significant nonpreference to greenbugs compared to the susceptible check.

9. Recovery from Shoot Fly Attack in a Sorghum Diallel1

Abstract

A diallel test of crosses between sorghum (Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench) varieties having high, intermediate, and low levels of “recovery resistance” (tolerance) to the sorghum shoot fly, Atherlgona variaMeigen, showed that the inheritance of this character is complex. Additive gene action contributed most to the variation among entries in percentage of recovered plants, but specific and epistatic effects were also significant. The average heterosis was 11% for the single cross mean over the mean of the parents, and the correlation between yield and percentage recovered plants was very high. Cultivars ‘Namatare’ and ‘Serena’ proved valuable in the short‐term breeding work, and populations (including derivatives of these cultivars) are being established for the longer term recurrent selection program. They should be effective in view of the largely additive genetic variance in recovery resistance.

10. Breeding for Resistance to the Sorghum Shoot Fly1

Abstract

Screening sorghum (Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench) varieties for seedling resistance to the sorghum shoot fly (Atherigona varia, Meigen) gave inconsistent results, and “recovery resistance” (tolerance) proved a better character. When levels of pest attack were high, infestation levels exceeded 90%, indicating that there was little worthwhile seedling resistance in the sorghums being tested. In contrast, good recovery resistance was shown by the cultivars ‘Serena’ and ‘Namatare,’ and more than 70% of the infested plants recovered and yielded normally. Recovery resistance was associated with good yield from tillers, and heritability was fairly high. ‘Namatare’ proved a successful parent, and grain sorghums with a combination of good shoot fly recovery resistance and yield were developed from crosses between Namatare and susceptible sorghums.

Abstract

Characteristics for separating the four biotypes (A, B, C, and D) of the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), are discussed, including morphological differences and response to resistant varieties and insecticides. Techniques for culturing greenbugs on caged plant:; in the greenhouse are described. In addition, methods are suggested for screening for plant resistance both in the greenhouse and in the field. Sources of plant resistance to the greenbug are listed. Culturing techniques for both primary and secondary parasitoids are covered. Difficulties that may be encountered are discussed for all phases of rearing and screening.
