We measure and analyze noise-induced energy-fluctuations of spin qubits defined in quantum dots made of isotopically natural silicon. Combining Ramsey, time-correlation of single-shot measurements, and CPMG experiments, we cover the qubit noise power spectrum over a frequency range of nine orders of magnitude without any gaps. We find that the low-frequency noise spectrum is similar across three different devices suggesting that it is dominated by the hyperfine coupling to nuclei. The effects of charge noise are smaller, but not negligible, and are device dependent as confirmed from the noise cross-correlations. We also observe differences to spectra reported in GaAs {[Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 177702 (2017), Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 236803 (2008)]}, which we attribute to the presence of the valley degree of freedom in silicon. Finally, we observe $T_2^*$ to increase upon increasing the external magnetic field, which we speculate is due to the increasing field-gradient of the micromagnet suppressing nuclear spin diffusion., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Path tracking (PT) controllers capable of replicating race driving techniques, such as drifting beyond the limits of handling, have the potential of enhancing active safety in critical conditions. This paper presents a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) approach that integrates multiple actuation methods, namely four-wheel-steering, longitudinal tyre force distribution, and direct yaw moment control, to execute drifting when this is beneficial for PT in emergency scenarios. We theoretically investigate heavy-hole--light-hole mixing in two-dimensional hole gases (2DHG). We restrict our analysis to the zone center, appropriate for the low-density regime, which leads to a simple description, analytical results, and physical insights. We identify two different types of hole-Hamiltonian terms concerning mixing. The first type changes the direction of the pure spinors, without admixing light-hole components. It is efficient for Rabi driving the heavy-hole spin. The second type induces mixing and changes the eigenvalues of the $g$-tensor. We analyze several measures that characterize the mixing quantitatively in Ge, Si, and GaAs, namely the $g$-factor, the light-hole weight in the wave function, the off-diagonal matrix elements in the Hamiltonian, and the strength of the induced spin-orbit interaction. We identify the canonical coordinate frame associated with a generic spin-3/2 Hamiltonian with time-reversal symmetry (TRS). In this coordinate frame, the mixing is quantified by a single parameter, the mixing angle $\vartheta$. We interpret it as the canonical (coordinate-frame and Hamiltonian-basis independent) measure of the heavy-hole--light-hole mixing. All the investigated mixing measures are simple functions of $\vartheta$. As an illustration, we use our model to analyze heavy-hole spin qubit $g$-tensor, dephasing, relaxation, and Rabi frequencies, interpreting the arising effects as due to rotations of the canonical frame and changes of the mixing angle $\vartheta$., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; substantial revision; the central change is the introduction of the canonical measure for the light-hole--heavy-hole mixing

On the quest to understand and reduce environmental noise in Si spin qubits, hyperfine interactions between electron and nuclear spins impose a major challenge. Silicon is a promising host material because one can enhance the spin coherence time by removing spinful $^{29}$Si isotopes. As more experiments rely on isotopic purification of Si, the role of other spinful atoms in the device should be clarified. This is not a straightforward task, as the hyperfine interactions with atoms in the barrier layers are poorly understood. We utilize density functional theory to determine the hyperfine tensors of both Si and Ge in a crystalline epitaxial Si/SiGe quantum well as well as Si and O atoms in an amorphous Si/SiO$_2$ (MOS) interface structure. Based on these results, we estimate the dephasing time $T_2^*$ due to magnetic noise from the spin bath and show that the coherence is limited by interactions with non-Si barrier atoms to a few \textmu s in Si/SiGe (for non-purified Ge) and about 100\,\textmu s in Si-MOS. Expressing these numbers alternatively, in Si/SiGe the interactions with Ge dominate below 1000\,ppm of $^{29}$Si content, and, due to low natural concentration of the spinful oxygen isotopes, the interactions with oxygen in Si-MOS become significant only below 1\,ppm of $^{29}$Si content., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Mobile robotic systems are becoming increasingly popular. These systems are used in various indoor applications, raging from warehousing and manufacturing to test benches for assessment of advanced control strategies, such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based control solutions, just to name a few. Scaled robotic cars are commonly equipped with a hierarchical control acthiecture that includes tasks dedicated to vehicle state estimation and control. This paper covers both aspects by proposing (i) a federeted extended Kalman filter (FEKF), and (ii) a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) path tracking controller trained via an expert demonstrator to expedite the learning phase and increase robustess to the simulation-to-reality gap. The paper also presents the formulation of a vehicle model along with an effective yet simple procedure for identifying tis paramters. The experimentally validated model is used for (i) supporting the design of the FEKF and (ii) serving as a digital twin for training the proposed DRL-based path tracking algorithm. Experimental results confirm the ability of the FEKF to improve the estimate of the mobile robot's position. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the DRL path tracking strateguy is experimentally tested along manoeuvres not considered during training, showing also the ability of the AI-based solution to outpeform model-based control strategies and the demonstrator. We analyze the polarization of nuclear spins in a quantum dot induced by a single-electron spin that is electrically driven to perform coherent Rabi oscillations. We derive the associated nuclear-spin polarization rate and analyze its dependence on the accessible control parameters, especially the detuning of the driving frequency from the electron Larmor frequency. The arising nuclear-spin polarization is related to the Hartmann-Hahn effect known from the NMR literature with two important differences. First, in quantum dots one typically uses a micro magnet, leading to a small deflection of the quantization axes of the electron and nuclear spins. Second, the electric driving wiggles the electron with respect to the atomic lattice. The two effects, absent in the traditional Hartmann-Hahn scenario, give rise to two mechanisms of nuclear-spin polarization in gated quantum dots. The arising nuclear-spin polarization is a resonance phenomenon, achieving maximal efficiency at the resonance of the electron Rabi and nuclear Larmor frequency (typically a few or a few tens of MHz). As a function of the driving frequency, the polarization rate can develop sharp peaks and reach large values at them. Since the nuclear polarization is experimentally detected as changes of the electron Larmor frequency, we often convert the former to the latter in our formulas and figures. In these units, the polarization can reach hundreds of MHz/s in GaAs quantum dots and at least tens of kHz/s in Si quantum dots. We analyze possibilities to exploit the resonant polarization effects for achieving large nuclear polarization and for stabilizing the Overhauser field through feedback., Comment: 34 pages including 15 pages of appendices and 3 pages of references, 13 figures. We detect correlations in qubit-energy fluctuations of non-neighboring qubits defined in isotopically purified Si/SiGe quantum dots. At low frequencies (where the noise is strongest), the correlation coefficient reaches 10% for a next-nearest-neighbor qubit-pair separated by 200 nm. Assigning the observed noise to be of electrical origin, a simple theoretical model quantitatively reproduces the measurements and predicts a polynomial decay of correlations with interqubit distance. We present self-assembly routes of metamagnetic FeRh nanoisland arrays using sputter deposition processing. Controlling the growth parameters and epitaxy allows tuning the size and shape of the FeRh nanoislands. While the phase transition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order is largely suppressed in nanoislands formed on oxide substrates via thermodynamic nucleation, we find that metamagnetism is largely preserved in nanomagnet arrays formed through solid-state dewetting. This behavior is strongly dependent on the resulting crystal faceting of the nanoislands, which is characteristic of each assembly route. Comparing the calculated surface energies for each magnetic phase of the nanoislands reveals that metamagnetism can be suppressed or allowed by specific geometrical configurations of the facets. Furthermore, we find that the spatial confinement leads to very pronounced supercooling and the absence of phase separation in the nanoislands. Finally, the supported nanomagnets are chemically etched away from the substrates to inspect the phase transition properties of self-standing nanoparticles. We demonstrate that solid-state dewetting is a feasible and scalable way to obtain supported and free-standing FeRh nanomagnets with preserved metamagnetism., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Semiconductor qubits are appealing for building quantum processors as they may be densely integrated due to small footprint. However, a high density raises the issue of noise correlated across different qubits, which is of practical concern for scalability and fault tolerance. Here, we analyse and quantify in detail the degree of noise correlation in a pair of neighbouring silicon spin qubits ~100 nm apart. We evaluate all a-priori independent auto- and cross- power spectral densities of noise as a function of frequency. We reveal strong inter-qubit noise correlation with a correlation strength as large as ~0.7 at ~1 Hz (70% of the maximum in-phase correlation), even in the regime where the spin-spin exchange interaction contributes negligibly. We furthermore find that fluctuations of single-spin precession rates are strongly correlated with exchange noise, giving away their electrical origin. Noise cross-correlations have thus enabled us to pinpoint the most influential noise in the present device among compelling mechanisms including nuclear spins. Our work presents a powerful tool set to assess and identify the noise acting on multiple qubits and highlights the importance of long-range electric noise in densely packed silicon spin qubits.

Magnonics is a prospective beyond CMOS technology which uses magnons, the quanta of spin waves, for low-power information processing. Many magnonic concepts and devices were recently demonstrated at macro- and microscale, and now these concepts need to be realized at nanoscale. Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and microscopy (BLS) has become a standard technique for spin wave visualization and characterization, and enabled many pioneering magnonic experiments. However, due to its fundamental limit in maximum detectable magnon momentum, the conventional BLS cannot be used to detect nanoscale spin waves. Here we show that optically induced Mie resonances in dielectric nanoparticles can be used to extend the range of accessible spin wave wavevectors beyond the BLS fundamental limit. The method is universal and can be used in many magnonic experiments dealing with thermally excited as well as coherently excited high-momentum, short-wavelength spin waves. This discovery significantly extends the usability and relevance of the BLS technique for nanoscale magnonic research.

We apply Bayesian statistics to the estimation of correlation functions. We give the probability distributions of auto- and cross-correlations as functions of the data. Our procedure uses the measured data optimally and informs about the certainty level of the estimation. Our results apply to general stationary processes and their essence is a non-parametric estimation of spectra. It allows one to better understand the statistical noise fluctuations, assess the correlations between two variables, and postulate parametric models of spectra that can be further tested. We investigate theoretically charge-noise induced spin dephasing of a hole confined in a quasi-two-dimensional silicon quantum dot. Central to our treatment is accounting for higher-order corrections to the Luttinger Hamiltonian. Using experimentally reported parameters, we find that the new terms give rise to sweet-spots for the hole-spin dephasing, which are sensitive to device details: dot size and asymmetry, growth direction, and applied magnetic and electric fields. Furthermore, we estimate that the dephasing time at the sweet-spots is boosted by several orders of magnitude, up to order of milliseconds., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures
