JUNO is a huge neutrino detector that will use 20 kton of organic liquid scintillator as its detection medium. The scintillator is a mixture of linear alkyl benzene (LAB), 2.5 g/L of 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) and 3 mg/L of 1,4-Bis(2-methylstyryl)benzene (Bis-MSB). The main goal of JUNO is to determine the Neutrino Mass Ordering [1, 2, 3]. In order to achieve this purpose, good energy and position reconstruction is required, hence a complete understanding of the optical characteristics of the liquid scintillator is mandatory. In this paper we present the measurements on the JUNO scintillator emission spectrum, absorption length and fluorescence time distribution performed respectively with a spectrofluorimeter, a spectrophotometer and a custom made setup

Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures with rich physics and great potential for unconventional computing. Typically, skyrmions form in bulk crystals with reduced symmetry or ultrathin film multilayers involving heavy metals. Here, we demonstrate the formation of fractional Bloch skyrmion tubes at room temperature by 3D printing ferromagnetic double-helix nanowires with two regions of opposite chirality. Using X-ray microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, we show that the coexistence of vortex and anti-parallel spin states induces the formation of fractional skyrmion tubes at zero magnetic fields, minimising the energy cost of breaking the coupling between geometric and magnetic chirality. We also demonstrate control over zero-field states, including pure vortex, or mixed skyrmion-vortex states, highlighting the magnetic reconfigurability of these 3D nanowires. This work shows how interfacing chiral geometries at the nanoscale can enable advanced forms of topological spintronics.

We investigate the effects of attractive Hubbard interaction on two-component fermionic atoms in narrow two-dimensional (2D) energy bands that exhibit Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the presence of an applied Zeeman field. This narrow-band 2D spin-orbit coupled attractive Fermi-Hubbard model can potentially be realized in cold atom systems in optical lattices with artificially engineered Rashba SOC and Zeeman field. Employing a self-consistent mean field approximation for the pairing potential, we uncover a complex phase diagram featuring various topological superfluid (TS) phases, dependent on the chemical potential and the Zeeman field. We focus on the pairing potential and the corresponding quasiparticle gap characterizing the TS phases, which are notably small for a wide-band model with quadratic dispersion near the $\Gamma$-point, as found in earlier work, and we identify the parameter regimes that maximize the gap. We find that, while generally the value of the pairing potential increases with the reduction of the fermionic bandwidth, as expected for narrow- or flat-band systems, the magnitude of the topological gap characterizing the TS phases reaches a maximum of about $10-12.5\%$ of the interaction strength at finite values of the hopping amplitude, Rashba coupling, and Zeeman field., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Several neutrino detectors, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the forthcoming large-scale JUNO, rely on liquid scintillator to detect reactor antineutrino interactions. In this context, inverse beta decay represents the golden channel for antineutrino detection, providing a pair of correlated events, thus a strong experimental signature to distinguish the signal from a variety of backgrounds. However, given the low cross-section of antineutrino interactions, the development of a powerful event selection algorithm becomes imperative to achieve effective discrimination between signal and backgrounds. In this study, we introduce a machine learning (ML) model to achieve this goal: a fully connected neural network as a powerful signal-background discriminator for a large liquid scintillator detector. We demonstrate, using the JUNO detector as an example, that, despite the already high efficiency of a cut-based approach, the presented ML model can further improve the overall event selection efficiency. Moreover, it allows for the retention of signal events at the detector edges that would otherwise be rejected because of the overwhelming amount of background events in that region. We also present the first interpretable analysis of the ML approach for event selection in reactor neutrino experiments. The optical and radiochemical purification of the scintillating liquid, which will fill the central detector of the JUNO experiment, plays a crucial role in achieving its scientific goals. Given its gigantic mass and dimensions and an unprecedented target value of about 3% @ 1 MeV in energy resolution, JUNO has set severe requirements on the parameters of its scintillator, such as attenuation length (Lat>20 m at 430 nm), transparency, light yield, and content of radioactive contaminants (238U,232Th<10-15 g/g). To accomplish these needs, the scintillator will be processed using several purification methods, including distillation in partial vacuum and gas stripping, which are performed in two large scale plants installed at the JUNO site. In this paper, layout, operating principles, and technical aspects which have driven the design and construction of the distil- lation and gas stripping plants are reviewed. The distillation is effective in enhancing the optical properties and removing heavy radio-impurities (238U,232Th, 40K), while the stripping process exploits pure water steam and high-purity nitrogen to extract gaseous contaminants (222Rn, 39Ar, 85Kr, O2) from the scintillator. The plant operating parameters have been tuned during the recent com- missioning phase at the JUNO site and several QA/QC measurements and tests have been performed to evaluate the performances of the plants. In the field of rare event physics, it is common to have huge masses of organic liquid scintillator as detection medium. In particular, they are widely used to study neutrino properties or astrophysical neutrinos. Thanks to its safety properties (such as low toxicity and high flash point) and easy scalability, linear alkyl benzene is the most common solvent used to produce liquid scintillators for large mass experiments. The knowledge of the refractive index is a pivotal point to understand the detector response, as this quantity (and its wavelength dependence) affects the Cherenkov radiation and photon propagation in the medium. In this paper, we report the measurement of the refractive index of the JUNO liquid scintillator between 260-1064 nm performed with two different methods (an ellipsometer and a refractometer), with a sub percent level precision. In addition, we used an interferometer to measure the group velocity in the JUNO liquid scintillator and verify the expected value derived from the refractive index measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

Disorder effects in hybrid semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) nanowires, widely recognized as the main obstacle to realizing stable Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in these structures, have been systematically investigated theoretically in recent years. However, there are no corresponding detailed studies of disorder effects in planar Josephson junction (JJ) structures, which represent a promising alternative to the Majorana nanowire platform. In this paper, we perform a numerical analysis of the low-energy physics of JJ structures based on an effective microscopic model that includes two types of disorder, charge impurities inside the semiconductor and roughness on the surface of the superconducting film. We consider different parameter regimes, including low and high chemical potential values, weak and strong effective SM-SC coupling strengths, and weak and strong disorder strengths. The results are benchmarked using disordered hybrid nanowires realized in planar SM-SC structures similar to those involved in the fabrication of Josephson junctions and having similar model parameters and disorder strengths. We find that the topological superconducting phase hosted by a JJ structure is, generally, more robust against disorder than the topological superconductivity realized in a hybrid nanowire with similar parameters. On the other hand, we find that operating the JJ in a regime characterized by large values of chemical potential results in huge finite-size effects that can destroy the stability of MZMs., Comment: 25 pages, 26 figures

Polarized X-rays allow for imaging birefringent or dichroic properties of materials with nanometric resolution. To disentangle these properties from the electronic density, either a polarization analyzer or several measurements with different polarizations (typically two, or more) are needed. Here we demonstrate that ptychography can disentangle these from a single-polarization measurement by using a multimodal analysis. This new method provides an alternative to obtain polarization-resolved images of a sample when manipulating the incident polarization is not possible nor sufficient., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We investigate theoretically a one-dimensional semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) heterostructure with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and parallel Zeeman field in the presence of disorder generated by random charged impurities and identify the optimal regimes for realizing topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. Using a Green's function approach, we show that upon increasing the disorder strength the stable topological superconducting phase characterized by robust end-to-end Majorana correlations "migrates" toward larger values of the Zeeman field and can be stabilized by increasing the effective SM-SC coupling. Based on these findings, we propose a strategy for accessing a regime characterized by well-separated Majorana zero modes that is based on (a) enhancing the strength of the effective SM-SC coupling (e.g., through interface engineering) and (b) expanding the range of accessible Zeeman fields (e.g., by enhancing the gyromagnetic ratio or optimizing the parent superconductor, to enable the application of larger magnetic fields). While this strategy may still require some reduction of the disorder strength, this requirement is significantly less strict than the corresponding requirement in a strategy that focuses exclusively on disorder reduction.

The ever-increasing need for spectrum for mobile broadband systems has led to the recent allocation of spectral resources for International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT) services in the upper mid band (6.425 - 7.125 GHz) at the World Radio Conference (WRC-23) as well as to the creation of an agenda item on identifying future IMT bands in the frequency region 7.125 - 10.5 GHz at WRC-27. The severity of the impact of these frequency allocations on existing UWB systems, which have been using this part of the spectrum as a sub-secondary user for many years, is still subject to controversial discussions. This paper contributes a study on the impact of IMT on a real-world vehicular UWB keyless entry system to this discussion. It is shown that both the car's wireless on-board unit and a nearby basestation may drastically affect the system's performance.

Nuclear reactors are a source of electron antineutrinos due to the presence of unstable fission products that undergo $\beta^-$ decay. They will be exploited by the JUNO experiment to determine the neutrino mass ordering and to get very precise measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters. This requires the reactor antineutrino spectrum to be characterized as precisely as possible both through high resolution measurements, as foreseen by the TAO experiment, and detailed simulation models. In this paper we present a benchmark analysis utilizing Serpent Monte Carlo simulations in comparison with real pressurized water reactor spent fuel data. Our objective is to study the accuracy of fission fraction predictions as a function of different reactor simulation approximations. Then, utilizing the BetaShape software, we construct fissile antineutrino spectra using the summation method, thereby assessing the influence of simulation uncertainties on reactor antineutrino spectrum.

Band engineering is employed thoroughly and targets technologically scalable photoanodes for solar water splitting applications. Complex and costly recipes are necessary, often for average performances. Here we report simple photoanode growth and thermal annealing, with effective band engineering results. By comparing Ti-doped hematite photoanodes annealed under Nitrogen to photoanodes annealed in air, we found strongly enhanced photocurrent, of more than 200 % in the first case. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and synchrotron X-rays spectromicroscopies we demonstrate that oxidized surface states and increased density of charge carriers are responsible for the enhanced photoelectrochemical activity. Surface states are found to be related to the formation of pseudo-brookite clusters by surface Ti segregation. Spectro-ptychography is used for the first time at Ti L3 absorption edge to isolate Ti chemical coordination arising from pseudo-brookite clusters contribution. Correlated with electron microscopy investigation and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the synchrotron spectromicroscopy data prove unambiguously the origin of the better photoelectrochemical activity of N2- annealed Ti-doped hematite nanorods. Finally, we present here a handy and cheap surface engineering method, beyond the known oxygen vacancy doping, allowing a net gain in the photoelectrochemical activity for the hematite-based photoanodes., Comment: 2 parts: first main manuscript with 38 pages, second supplementary informations with 18 pages

Near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) that may evolve into impactors deserve detailed threat assessment studies. Early physical characterization of a would-be impactor may help in optimizing impact mitigation plans. We first detected NEA 2023~DZ$_{2}$ on 27--February--2023. After that, it was found to have a Minimum Orbit Intersection Distance (MOID) with Earth of 0.00005~au as well as an unusually high initial probability of becoming a near-term (in 2026) impactor. We aim to perform a rapid but consistent dynamical and physical characterization of 2023~DZ$_{2}$ as an example of a key response to mitigate the consequences of a potential impact. We use a multi-pronged approach, drawing from various methods (observational/computational) and techniques (spectroscopy/photometry from multiple instruments), and bringing the data together to perform a rapid and robust threat assessment.} The visible reflectance spectrum of 2023~DZ$_{2}$ is consistent with that of an X-type asteroid. Light curves of this object obtained on two different nights give a rotation period $P$=6.2743$\pm$0.0005 min with an amplitude $A$=0.57$\pm$0.14~mag. We confirm that although its MOID is among the smallest known, 2023~DZ$_{2}$ will not impact Earth in the foreseeable future as a result of secular near-resonant behaviour. Our investigation shows that coordinated observation and interpretation of disparate data provides a robust approach from discovery to threat assessment when a virtual impactor is identified. We consider theoretically the physics of bulk topological superconductivity accompanied by boundary non-Abelian Majorana zero modes in semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) hybrid systems consisting of finite wires in the presence of correlated disorder arising from random charged impurities. We find the system to manifest a highly complex behavior due to the subtle interplay between finite wire length and finite disorder, leading to copious low-energy in-gap states throughout the wire and considerably complicating the interpretation of tunneling spectroscopic transport measurements used extensively to search for Majorana modes. The presence of disorder-induced low-energy states may lead to the non-existence of end Majorana zero modes even when tunneling spectroscopy manifests zero bias conductance peaks in local tunneling and signatures of bulk gap closing/reopening in the nonlocal transport. In short wires within the intermediate disorder regime, apparent topology may manifest in small ranges ("patches") of parameter values, which may or may not survive the long wire limit depending on various details. Because of the dominance of disorder-induced in-gap states, the system may even occasionally have an appropriate topological invariant without manifesting isolated end Majorana zero modes. We discuss our findings in the context of a recent breakthrough experiment from Microsoft reporting the simultaneous observations of zero bias conductance peaks in local tunneling and gap opening in nonlocal transport within small patches of parameter space. Based on our analysis, we believe that the disorder strength to SC gap ratio must decrease further for the definitive realization of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes in SM-SC devices., Comment: 34 pages, 42 figures

Spectro-ptychography offers improved spatial resolution and additional phase spectral information relative to that provided by scanning transmission X-ray microscopes (STXM). However, carrying out ptychography at the lower range of soft X-ray energies (e.g., below 200 eV to 600 eV) on samples with weakly scattering signals can be challenging. We present soft X-ray ptychography results at energies as low as 180 eV and illustrate the capabilities with results from permalloy nanorods (Fe 2p), carbon nanotubes (C 1s), and boron nitride bamboo nanostructures (B 1s, N1s). We describe optimization of low energy X-ray spectro-ptychography and discuss important challenges associated with measurement approaches, reconstruction algorithms, and their effects on the reconstructed images. We investigate the effects of disorder characterising a superconducting thin film on the proximity-induced superconductivity generated by the film (in, e.g., a semiconductor) based on the exact numerical analysis of a three-dimensional microscopic model. To make the problem numerically tractable, we use a recursive Green's function method in combination with a patching approach that exploits the short-range nature of the interface Green's function in the presence of disorder. As a result of the Fermi surface mismatch between the superconductor (SC) and the semiconductor (SM) in combination with the confinement-induced quantization of the transverse SC modes, the proximity effect induced by a clean SC film is typically one to three orders of magnitude smaller that the corresponding quantity for a bulk SC and exhibits huge thickness-dependent variations. The presence of disorder has competing effects: on the one hand it enhances the proximity-induced superconductivity and suppresses its strong thickness dependence, on the other hand it generates proximity-induced effective disorder in the SM. With the ever increasing complexity of specifications, manual sizing for analog circuits recently became very challenging. Especially for innovative, large-scale circuits designs, with tens of design variables, operating conditions and conflicting objectives to be optimized, design engineers spend many weeks, running time-consuming simulations, in their attempt at finding the right configuration. Recent years brought machine learning and optimization techniques to the field of analog circuits design, with evolutionary algorithms and Bayesian models showing good results for circuit sizing. In this context, we introduce a design optimization method based on Generalized Differential Evolution 3 (GDE3) and Gaussian Processes (GPs). The proposed method is able to perform sizing for complex circuits with a large number of design variables and many conflicting objectives to be optimized. While state-of-the-art methods reduce multi-objective problems to single-objective optimization and potentially induce a prior bias, we search directly over the multi-objective space using Pareto dominance and ensure that diverse solutions are provided to the designers to choose from. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed method is the first to specifically address the diversity of the solutions, while also focusing on minimizing the number of simulations required to reach feasible configurations. We evaluate the introduced method on two voltage regulators showing different levels of complexity and we highlight that the proposed innovative candidate selection method and survival policy leads to obtaining feasible solutions, with a high degree of diversity, much faster than with GDE3 or Bayesian Optimization-based algorithms., Comment: 48 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Knowledge Based Systems

NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is performing a homogeneous survey of the sky from space in search of transiting exoplanets. The collected data are also being used for detecting passing Solar system objects, including 17 new outer Solar system body candidates located at geocentric distances in the range 80-200 au, that need follow-up observations with ground-based telescope resources for confirmation. Here, we present results of a proof-of-concept mini-survey aimed at recovering two of these candidates that was carried out with the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope and a QHY600L CMOS camera mounted at its prime focus. For each candidate attempted, we surveyed a patch of sky of over one square degree around its expected coordinates in Sloan r'. The same location was revisited in five consecutive or nearly consecutive nights, reaching S/N > 4 at r' < 23 mag. We focused on the areas of sky around the circumpolar TESS candidates located at equatorial coordinates (07:00:15, +86:55:19), 202.8 au from Earth, and (06:39:47, +83:43:54) at 162.1 au, but we could not recover either of them at r' < 23 mag. Based on the detailed analysis of the acquired images, we confirm that either both candidates are much fainter than predicted or that they are false positives., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetization as well as their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion in tracks. Antiferromagnetic (AF) skyrmions allow these limitations to be lifted owing to their vanishing magnetization and net zero topological charge, promising room-temperature, ultrasmall skyrmions, fast dynamics, and insensitivity to external magnetic fields. While room-temperature AF spin textures have been recently demonstrated, the observation and controlled nucleation of AF skyrmions operable at room temperature in industry-compatible synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) material systems is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that isolated skyrmions can be stabilized at zero field and room temperature in a fully compensated SAF. Using X-ray microscopy techniques, we are able to observe the skyrmions in the different SAF layers and demonstrate their antiparallel alignment. The results are substantiated by micromagnetic simulations and analytical models using experimental parameters, which confirm the chiral SAF skyrmion spin texture and allow the identification of the physical mechanisms that control the SAF skyrmion size and stability. We also demonstrate the local nucleation of SAF skyrmions via local current injection as well as ultrafast laser excitations at zero field. These results will enable the utilization of SAF skyrmions in skyrmion-based devices.
