Abstract

Assessing biodiversity status and trends in plant communities is critical for understanding, quantifying and predicting the effects of global change on ecosystems. Vegetation plots record the occurrence or abundance of all plant species co-occurring within delimited local areas. This allows species absences to be inferred, information seldom provided by existing global plant datasets. Although many vegetation plots have been recorded, most are not available to the global research community. A recent initiative, called ‘sPlot’, compiled the first global vegetation plot database, and continues to grow and curate it. The sPlot database, however, is extremely unbalanced spatially and environmentally, and is not open-access. Here, we address both these issues by (a) resampling the vegetation plots using several environmental variables as sampling strata and (b) securing permission from data holders of 105 local-to-regional datasets to openly release data. We thus present sPlotOpen, the largest open-access dataset of vegetation plots ever released. sPlotOpen can be used to explore global diversity at the plant community level, as ground truth data in remote sensing applications, or as a baseline for biodiversity monitoring.

Abstract

Aim The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification. Our goal was to develop a tool for assigning vegetation‐plot records to the habitats of the EUNIS system, use it to classify a European vegetation‐plot database, and compile statistically‐derived characteristic species combinations and distribution maps for these habitats. Location Europe. Methods We developed the classification expert system EUNIS‐ESy, which contains definitions of individual EUNIS habitats based on their species composition and geographic location. Each habitat was formally defined as a formula in a computer language combining algebraic and set‐theoretic concepts with formal logical operators. We applied this expert system to classify 1,261,373 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and other databases. Then we determined diagnostic, constant and dominant species for each habitat by calculating species‐to‐habitat fidelity and constancy (occurrence frequency) in the classified data set. Finally, we mapped the plot locations for each habitat. Results Formal definitions were developed for 199 habitats at Level 3 of the EUNIS hierarchy, including 25 coastal, 18 wetland, 55 grassland, 43 shrubland, 46 forest and 12 man‐made habitats. The expert system classified 1,125,121 vegetation plots to these habitat groups and 73,188 to other habitats, while 63,064 plots remained unclassified or were classified to more than one habitat. Data on each habitat were summarized in factsheets containing habitat description, distribution map, corresponding syntaxa and characteristic species combination. Conclusions EUNIS habitats were characterized for the first time in terms of their species composition and distribution, based on a classification of a European database of vegetation plots using the newly developed electronic expert

Abstract

Aims: Vegetation-plot records provide information on the presence and cover or abundance of plants co-occurring in the same community. Vegetation-plot data are spread across research groups, environmental agencies and biodiversity research centers and, thus, are rarely accessible at continental or global scales. Here we present the sPlot database, which collates vegetation plots worldwide to allow for the exploration of global patterns in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity at the plant community level. Results: sPlot version 2.1 contains records from 1,121,244 vegetation plots, which comprise 23,586,216 records of plant species and their relative cover or abundance in plots collected worldwide between 1885 and 2015. We complemented the information for each plot by retrieving climate and soil conditions and the biogeographic context (e.g., biomes) from external sources, and by calculating community-weighted means and variances of traits using gap-filled data from the global plant trait database TRY. Moreover, we created a phylogenetic tree for 50,167 out of the 54,519 species identified in the plots. We present the first maps of global patterns of community richness and community-weighted means of key traits. Conclusions: The availability of vegetation plot data in sPlot offers new avenues for vegetation analysis at the global scale.

5. Razumijevanje slušanog kod učenika trećih razreda inkluzivnih škola

Abstract

U nastavi Hrvatskoga jezika slušanje ima značajno mjesto u razvijanju svih jezičnih djelatnosti (čitanje, pisanje, govorenje). U osnovnoj školi najčešći su zadaci slušanja s razumijevanjem (Visinko, 2010). U okviru trogodišnjeg istraživačkog projekta financiranog od strane Erasmus +, K2, Strateško partnerstvo za škole, Obrazovanje utemeljeno na dokazima, provedeno je istraživanje pod naslovom „Euopski strateški model za školsku inkluziju“. Projekt je okupio stručnjake u području inkluzivnog obrazovanja Sveučilišta iz Italije (Perugia, Udine), Njemačke (Duisburg-Essen), Samostalnog Sveučilišta u Španjolskoj (Barcelona), Sveučilišta u Sloveniji (Ljubljana) te Sveučilišta u Hrvatskoj (Zagreb). U okviru projekta bilo je uključeno slušanje teksta s razumijevanjem. Učenici su slušali znanstveno-poularni tekst o vulkanima koji je učitelj/učiteljica čitao/čitala dva puta, po dijelovima teksta. Učenici su odgovarali na 12 pitanja višestrukog izbora s jednim točnim odgovorom. Pitanja su se odnosila na razumijevanje sadržaja poslušanoga teksta, odgovaranje na pitanja obogaćeno je s dva crteža. Cilj ovog rada je utvrditi postignuća učenika trećih razreda (N=307 ; N učenica=146) osnovnih škola grada Zagreba i Zagrebačke županije (N=17). U sve razrede škola uključeni su učenici s teškoćama (N=28), u razvoju, u učenju, okolinski uvjetovanim čimbenicima. Inicijalnim ispitivanjima utvrdili smo pokazatelje kvalitete inkluzivnih procesa (dimenzije: kultura, politika, praksa) u trećim razredima osnovnih škola. Rezultati istraživanja slušanja su pokazali da su opći bolji uspjeh na pitanjima poslušanoga teksta postigli učenici kako tipičnoga razvoja, tako i učenici s teškoćama, u razredima s visokim pokazateljima inkluzivnih procesa. Trajno preispitivanje poučavanja i učenja, traženje učinkovitih metoda, suradnja i potpora te mjerenje i vrednovanje postignuća najvažnije je za razvoj inkluzije.

Abstract

European tradition on vegetation classification provides an extraordinary legacy for understanding biodiversity. However, this classification lacks explicit data on vegetation attributes, especially if we extend national or regional concepts to a continental perspective. An additional effort for evaluating and characterizing European vegetation types is therefore needed, and the data contained in vegeta­ tion databases are probably the main tool for these purposes. The Braun­Blanquet project is an initiative of the European Vegetation Survey for characterizing veg­ etation alliances across Europe. By analyzing more than 500,000 vegetation plots from 22 European countries, we developed a framework consisting of: (1) evaluat­ ing the consistency and robustness of alliances using the information provided by vegetation plot databases, (2) calibrating assignment rules for classifying, at least partially, the plots not assigned to alliances and (3) characterizing vegeta­ tion types by providing lists of diagnostic species and major distributional pat­ terns. The Braun­Blanquet project represents the first attempt for extrapolating European vegetation information into a comprehensive definition of vegetation types. Furthermore, the outputs of the project are expected to improve biodiver­sity assessment and the conservation management of natural habitats. As a study case, we illustrate how our framework can be used to characterize different forest types across Europe.

The European Vegetation Archive (EVA) is a centralized database of European vegetation plots developed by the IAVS Working Group European Vegetation Survey. It has been in development since 2012 and first made available for use in research projects in 2014. It stores copies of national and regional vegetation- plot databases on a single software platform. Data storage in EVA does not affect on-going independent development of the contributing databases, which remain the property of the data contributors. EVA uses a prototype of the database management software TURBOVEG 3 developed for joint management of multiple databases that use different species lists. This is facilitated by the SynBioSys Taxon Database, a system of taxon names and concepts used in the individual European databases and their corresponding names on a unified list of European flora. TURBOVEG 3 also includes procedures for handling data requests, selections and provisions according to the approved EVA Data Property and Governance Rules. By 30 June 2015, 61 databases from all European regions have joined EVA, contributing in total 1 027 376 vegetation plots, 82% of them with geographic coordinates, from 57 countries. EVA provides a unique data source for large-scale analyses of European vegetation diversity both for fundamental research and nature conservation applications. Abstract

Jezikovne prilagoditve in oblikovne prilagoditve, kot je poudarjanje ključnih besed, olajšajo branje in razumevanje, kar se lahko uporablja kot strategija za podporo pri bralnih nalogah, zlasti pri osebah z disleksijo (Rello idr., 2014). Na področju obdelave naravnega jezika obstaja veliko raziskav, ki se osredotočajo na pridobivanje ključnih besed za namen povzemanja besedila (D‘Avanzo in Magnini, 2005). Pri izobraževanju oseb z disleksijo se učitelje spodbuja, naj poudarjajo ključne besede, da bi bila besedila dostopnejša (Hargreaves, 2007). Vendar izbira ključnih besed pogosto temelji na osebnih odločitvah in ne na splošnih, znanstveno utemeljenih pravilih. Doslej je bilo učinkovitosti poudarjanja ključnih besed za lažjo berljivost in razumljivost besedil posvečeno le malo pozornosti. Namen te študije je bil raziskati splošna pravila, ki jih strokovnjaki uporabljajo pri poudarjanju ključnih besed v besedilih. Sodelovali so logopedi, ki so na Hrvaškem strokovnjaki za prilagajanje gradiv osebam z disleksijo (n = 50). Kontrolno skupino so sestavljali drugi visoko izobraženi posamezniki z različnih akademskih področij (n = 50). Vsem udeležencem je bilo naročeno, naj v besedilu označijo ključne besede. Gradivo je bil odlomek besedila iz romana Vrnitev Filipa Latinoviča, ki ga je napisal Miroslav Krleža, in je bil uporabljen kot izhodiščno besedilo za esej iz hrvaškega jezika na državni maturi leta 2019. Ta študija je v teku ; razpravljali bomo o morebitnih razlikah v številu in vrsti ključnih besed, ki so jih izpostavili logopedi in kontrolna skupina. / Linguistic adaptations and graphic adjustments, such as highlighting keywords, facilitate reading and comprehension, which can be used as a strategy to support reading tasks, especially for people with dyslexia (Rello et al., 2014). There is a great deal of research on natural language processing that focuses on the extraction of keywords for the purpose of text summarisation (D’Avanzo and Magnini, 2005). In the education of people with dyslexia, teachers are encouraged to highlight keywords to make texts more accessible (Hargreaves, 2007). However, the choice of keywords is often based on personal choices rather than on general, scientifically based rules. To date, little attention has been paid to the effectiveness of highlighting keywords to facilitate the readability and comprehensibility of texts. The aim of this study was to investigate the general rules experts apply when highlighting keywords in texts. The participants were speech and language pathologists (SLP) who are experts in adapting materials for people with dyslexia (n=50). The control group consisted of other highly educated individuals from various academic disciplines (n=50). The participants were instructed to highlight keywords in the text. The material was a text fragment from the novel The Return of Filip Latinovicz written by Miroslav Krleža, which was used as the starting text for the Croatian language essay in the 2019 State Matura exam. This study is ongoing ; we will discuss the possible differences in the number and type of keywords highlighted by SLPs and the control group.

It has been in development since 2012 and first made available for use in research projects in 2014. It stores copies of national and regional vegetation-plot databases on a single software platform. Data storage in EVA does not affect on-going independent development of the contributing databases, which remain the property of the data contributors. EVA uses a prototype of the database management software TURBOVEG 3 developed for joint management of multiple databases that use different species lists. This is facilitated by the SynBioSys Taxon Database, a system of taxon names and concepts used in the individual European databases and their corresponding names on a unified list of European flora. TURBOVEG 3 also includes procedures for handling data requests, selections and provisions according to the approved EVA Data Property and Governance Rules. By 30 June 2015, 61 databases from all European regions have joined EVA, contributing in total 1 027 376 vegetation plots, 82% of them with geographic coordinates, from 57 countries. EVA provides a unique data source for large-scale analyses of European vegetation diversity both for fundamental research and nature conservation applications. Abstract

Plant communities are composed of species that differ both in functional traits and evolutionary histories. As species' functional traits partly result from their individual evolutionary history, we expect the functional diversity of communities to increase with increasing phylogenetic diversity. This expectation has only been tested at local scales and generally for specific growth forms or specific habitat types, for example, grasslands. Here we compare standardized effect sizes for functional and phylogenetic diversity among 1,781,836 vegetation plots using the global sPlot database. In contrast to expectations, we find functional diversity and phylogenetic diversity to be only weakly and negatively correlated, implying a decoupling between these two facets of diversity. While phylogenetic diversity is higher in forests and reflects recent climatic conditions (1981 to 2010), functional diversity tends to reflect recent and past climatic conditions (21,000 years ago). Abstract

Ecological theory predicts close relationships between macroclimate and functional traits. Yet, global climatic gradients correlate only weakly with the trait composition of local plant communities, suggesting that important factors have been ignored. Here, we investigate the consistency of climate-trait relationships for plant communities in European habitats. Assuming that local factors are better accounted for in more narrowly defined habitats, we assigned > 300,000 vegetation plots to hierarchically classified habitats and modelled the effects of climate on the community-weighted means of four key functional traits using generalized additive models. We found that the predictive power of climate increased from broadly to narrowly defined habitats for specific leaf area and root length, but not for plant height and seed mass. Although macroclimate generally predicted the distribution of all traits, its effects varied, with habitat-specificity increasing toward more narrowly defined habitats. We conclude that macroclimate is an important determinant of terrestrial plant communities, but future predictions of climatic effects must consider how habitats are defined., (© 2023. 14. Can Urban Grassland Plants Contribute to the Phytoremediation of Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metals.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate whether the most common wild plant species of urban grassland can be used for phytoremediation of soils polluted with heavy metals. The study was conducted in the city of Varaždin, in northern Croatia. The content of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) was determined in soil samples as well as in unwashed and washed plant samples (Taraxacum officinale, Plantago lanceolata, Trifolium repens). The results show that the most polluted site is the railway station, while most sites are polluted by road traffic. The soils are most enriched with Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd. The bioconcentration factors for all three plant species are <1, indicating the relatively low capacity of phytoextraction. A considerable amount of heavy metals is found in the dust deposited on the plant surface, which is confirmed by a statistically significant difference between washed and unwashed plant samples. In addition, the biomass of each plant species that can be removed (in t/ha year), the mass of specific heavy metal that can be removed (in kg/ha), and the years required for phytoremediation are reported. In conclusion, phytoremediation with only common plant species of urban grassland is not possible within a reasonable period of time.

Abstract

The impact of a coal-fired Plomin Power Plant (PPP) in Croatia on PCB soil burden was examined by comparing the occurrence, levels, and profile of PCBs in soil from the PPP with the values determined in urban-industrialized soil (Varaždin, Croatia). Soil burden by organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were also investigated at both locations. Topsoil samples were collected at five distances (100-800 m) along a downwind pollution gradient from the PPP and across the city. The total content of PCBs in 100-m soil was nearly 20-fold the levels found in 800-m soil, which pointed to the PPP as a local source of soil contamination. The PPP soils were dominated by indicator PCB congeners, particularly hexa-homologs. A different profile and mass fraction range of PCBs in soils from PPP and Varaždin area indicated the different sources of contamination. Levels of total PCBs in PPP soils (0.25-19.07 μg kg -1 ) were higher than PCB levels determined in soils from Varaždin (0.29-5.52 μg kg -1 ), partially as a result of higher OC content in PPP soils. PPP soil burden by PCBs corresponded to a lower end of PCB level ranges reported for cities with high population and heavy industry. OCPs were detected at significantly higher levels in Varaždin soils than in PPP soils, with the highest contribution of the DDT-like compounds (DDX) detected in soils affected by river deposits. The p,p'-DDE/p,p'-DDT ratio in Varaždin soils indicated a fresh atmospheric input of p,p'-DDT. The PPP soil analysis detected a presence of only p,p'-DDE and HCB at levels corresponding to their global environmental presence.

Questions: What are the main floristic patterns in the Pannonian and western Pontic steppe grasslands? What are the diagnostic species of the major subdivisions of the class Festuco-Brometea (temperate Euro-Siberian dry and semi-dry grasslands)?, Location: Carpathian Basin (E Austria, SE Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, N Croatia and N Serbia), Ukraine, S Poland and the Bryansk region of W Russia., Methods: We applied a geographically stratified resampling to a large set of relevés containing at least one indicator species of steppe grasslands. The resulting data set of 17 993 relevés was classified using the TWINSPAN algorithm. We identified groups of clusters that corresponded to the class Festuco-Brometea . After excluding relevés not belonging to our target class, we applied a consensus of three fidelity measures, also taking into account external knowledge, to establish the diagnostic species of the orders of the class. The original TWINSPAN divisions were revised on the basis of these diagnostic species., Results: The TWINSPAN classification revealed soil moisture as the most important environmental factor. Eight out of 16 TWINSPAN groups corresponded to Festuco-Brometea . A total of 80, 32 and 58 species were accepted as diagnostic for the orders Brometalia erecti , Festucetalia valesiacae and Stipo-Festucetalia pallentis , respectively. In the further subdivision of the orders, soil conditions, geographic distribution and altitude could be identified as factors driving the major floristic patterns., Conclusions: We propose the following classification of the Festuco-Brometea in our study area: (1) Brometalia erecti (semi-dry grasslands) with Scabioso ochroleucae-Poion angustifoliae (steppe meadows of the forest zone of E Europe) and Cirsio-Brachypodion pinnati (meadow steppes on deep soils in the forest-steppe zone of E Central and E Europe); (2) Festucetalia valesiacae (grass steppes) with Festucion valesiacae (grass steppes on less developed soils in the forest-steppe zone of E Central and E Europe) and Stipion lessingianae (grass steppes in the steppe zone); (3) Stipo-Festucetalia pallentis (rocky steppes) with Asplenio septentrionalis-Festucion pallentis (rocky steppes on siliceous and intermediate soils), Bromo-Festucion pallentis (thermophilous rocky steppes on calcareous soils), Diantho-Seslerion (dealpine Sesleria caerulea grasslands of the Western Carpathians) and Seslerion rigidae (dealpine Sesleria rigida grasslands of the Romanian Carpathians).

17. Detection of heavy metals in common vegetables at Varaždin City Market, Croatia.

Abstract

The present study was aimed at the estimation of heavy metal content in vegetables sold at the city market of one of the densely populated Croatian cities, Varaždin, and to establish the relationship between their levels and possible sources of contamination. Twenty-eight samples of the most common diet vegetables (red and white potato, onion, carrot, common bean, lettuce, and cabbage) were randomly bought at the market in September and October 2013. Using the atomic absorption spectrometry method, concentrations of nine heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were measured in the selected samples. The results showed that, in five out of 28 samples analysed, six concentrations exceeded the maximum levels provided for in the regulations: five for Pb and one for Cd. Maximum regulated levels for Pb were exceeded in two samples of red potato, two samples of common bean, and one sample of carrot (17.9 %), and for Cd in a sample of red potato (3.6 %). In conclusion, the cause of the overstepping of the maximum levels for Pb and Cd in the vegetables analysed was most likely the contaminated soil. The possible sources of soil contamination include traffic, nearby industry, floodwaters of rivers and streams, and the use of pesticides and fertilisers in agricultural production.
