We perform a direct comparison between Kramers' method in many dimensions -- i.e., Langer's theory -- adapted to magnetic spin systems, and a path sampling method in the form of forward flux sampling, as a means to compute collapse rates of metastable magnetic skyrmions. We show that a good agreement is obtained between the two methods. We report variations of the attempt frequency associated with skyrmion collapse by three to four orders of magnitude when varying the applied magnetic field by 5$\%$ of the exchange strength, which confirms the existence of a strong entropic contribution to the lifetime of skyrmions. This demonstrates that in complex systems, the knowledge of the rate prefactor, in addition to the internal energy barrier, is essential in order to properly estimate a lifetime., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures (main text), 8 pages including supplemental material

We study annihilation mechanisms of small first- and second-order skyrmions and antiskyrmions on the frustrated $J_1-J_2-J_3$ square lattice with broken inversion symmetry (DMI). We find that annihilation happens via the injection of the opposite topological charge in the form of meron or antimeron nucleation. Overall, the exchange frustration generates a complex energy landscape with not only many (meta)stable and unstable local energy solutions, but also many possible paths connecting them. Whenever possible, we compute the activation energy and attempt frequency for the annihilation of isolated topological defects. In particular, we compare the average lifetime of the antiskyrmion calculated with transition state theory with direct Langevin simulations, where an excellent agreement is obtained., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

We report dissipative magnon-photon coupling caused by cavity Lenz effect, where the magnons in a magnet induce a rf current in the cavity, leading to a cavity back action that impedes the magnetization dynamics. This effect is revealed in our experiment as level attraction with a coalescence of hybridized magnon-photon modes, which is distinctly different from level repulsion with mode anticrossing caused by coherent magnon-photon coupling. We develop a method to control the in- terpolation of coherent and dissipative magnon-photon coupling, and observe a matching condition where the two effects cancel. Our work sheds light on the so-far hidden side of magnon-photon coupling, opening a new avenue for controlling and utilizing light-matter interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We compute annihilation rates of metastable magnetic skyrmions using a form of Langer's theory in the intermediate-to-high damping (IHD) regime. For a N\'eel skyrmion, a Bloch skyrmion, and an antiskyrmion, we look at two possible paths to annihilation: collapse and escape through a boundary. We also study the effects of a curved vs. a flat boundary, a second skyrmion and a non-magnetic defect. We find that the skyrmion's internal modes play a dominant role in the thermally activated transitions compared to the spin-wave excitations and that the relative contribution of internal modes depends on the nature of the transition process. Our calculations for a small skyrmion stabilized at zero-field show that collapse on a defect is the most probable path. In the absence of a defect, the annihilation is largely dominated by escape mechanisms, even though in this case the activation energy is higher than that of collapse processes. Escape through a flat boundary is found more probable than through a curved boundary. The potential source of stability of metastable skyrmions is therefore found not to lie in high activation energies, nor in the dynamics at the transition state, but comes from entropic narrowing in the saddle point region which leads to lowered attempt frequencies. This narrowing effect is found to be primarily associated with the skyrmion's internal modes., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We have utilised a high spatial resolution imaging method, Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), for precise measurement of the magnetic induction distribution in skyrmion states in noncentrosymmetric magnetically ordered materials. Applied to investigate the internal structure of hexagonal skyrmion lattice cells, stabilised by an out-plane applied magnetic field in an FeGe nanowedge specimen, mapping of the in-plane component of magnetic induction has yielded "average" skyrmion profiles and observation of internal six-fold symmetry. With increasing field strength, the diameter of "average" skyrmion cores was observed to decrease accompanied by a non-linear variation of the lattice periodicity. Variations in structure for individual skyrmions were studied utilising an advanced DPC detection scheme with a variety of symmetry lowering distortions being observed. Our observations are consistent with a theoretical phenomenological model, which has predicted the structure of hexagonal skyrmion lattice cells and also that twisting states near to the material surfaces provide a basis for energetic stabilisation of the skyrmion lattice over the conical phase. There was good agreement with experiment for predictions of bulk skyrmion structure and their response (core-size & lattice periodicity variation) to an applied field.

We report on the crossover from the thermal to athermal regime of an artificial spin ice formed from a square array of magnetic islands whose lateral size, 30~nm~$\times$~70~nm, is small enough that they are superparamagnetic at room temperature. We used resonant magnetic soft x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) as a method to observe the time-time correlations of the fluctuating magnetic configurations of spin ice during cooling, which are found to slow abruptly as a freezing temperature $T_0 = 178 \pm 5$~K is approached. This slowing is well-described by a Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law, implying that the frozen state is glassy, with the freezing temperature being commensurate with the strength of magnetostatic interaction energies in the array. The activation temperature, $T_\mathrm{A} = 40 \pm 10$~K, is much less than that expected from a Stoner-Wohlfarth coherent rotation model. Zero-field-cooled/field-cooled magnetometry reveals a freeing up of fluctuations of states within islands above this temperature, caused by variation in the local anisotropy axes at the oxidised edges. This Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann behavior implies that the system enters a glassy state on freezing, which is unexpected for a system with a well-defined ground state.

Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) investigations of modulated states in a FeGe wedge and detailed calculations demonstrate that chiral twists arising near the surfaces of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets (Meynell et al. Phys. Rev. B, 90, 014406 (2014)) provide a stabilization mechanism for skyrmion lattices and helicoids in cubic helimagnet nanolayers. The calculated magnetic phase diagram for free standing cubic helimagnet nanolayers shows that magnetization processes in these compounds fundamentally differ from those in bulk cubic helimagnets and are characterized by the first-order transitions between modulated phases and the formation of specific multidomain states. By using the stripline Microwave Vector Network Analyzer Ferromagnetic Resonance and Pulsed Inductive Microwave Magnetometry spectroscopy techniques, we study a strong coupling regime of magnons to microwave photons in the planar geometry of a lithographically formed split-ring resonator (SRR) loaded by a single-crystal epitaxial yttrium-iron garnet (YIG) film. Strong anti-crossing of the photon modes of SRR and of the magnon modes of the YIG film is observed in the applied-magnetic-field resolved measurements. The coupling strength extracted from the experimental data reaches 9 percent at 3 GHz. Theoretically, we propose an equivalent circuit model of an SRR loaded by a magnetic film. This model follows from the results of our numerical simulations of the microwave field structure of the SRR and of the magnetization dynamics in the YIG film driven by the microwave currents in the SRR. The equivalent circuit model is in good agreement with the experiment. It provides a simple physical explanation of the process of mode anti-crossing. Our findings are important for future applications in microwave quantum photonic devices as well as in magnetically tunable metamaterials exploiting the strong coupling of magnons to microwave photons.

Skyrmions are topologically protected field configurations with particle-like properties that play important roles in various fields of science. Recently, skyrmions have been directly observed in chiral magnets. Here, we investigate the effects of nonmagnetic impurities (structural point-like defects) on the different initial states (random or helical states) and on the formation of the skyrmion crystal in a discrete lattice. By using first-principle calculations and Monte Carlo techniques, we have shown that even a small percentage of spin vacancies present in the chiral magnetic thin film affects considerably the skyrmion order. The main effects of impurities are somewhat similar to thermal effects. The presence of these spin vacancies also induces the formation of compact merons (bimerons) in both the helical and skyrmion states. We have also investigated the effects of adjacent impurities producing only one hole (with an almost circular shape) intentionally inserted into the plate (forming a non-simply connected manifold) on the skyrmion crystal.

Domain wall propagation has been measured in continuous, weakly disordered, quasi-two-dimensional, Ising-like magnetic layers that are subject to spatially periodic domain wall pinning potentials. The potentials are generated non-destructively using the stray magnetic field of ordered arrays of magnetically hard [Co/Pt]$_m$ nanoplatelets which are patterned above and are physically separated from the continuous magnetic layer. The effect of the periodic pinning potentials on thermally activated domain wall creep dynamics is shown to be equivalent, at first approximation, to that of a uniform, effective retardation field, $H_{ret}$, which acts against the applied field, $H$. We show that $H_{ret}$ depends not only on the array geometry but also on the relative orientation of $H$ and the magnetization of the nanoplatelets. A result of the latter dependence is that wall-mediated hysteresis loops obtained for a set nanoplatelet magnetization exhibit many properties that are normally associated with ferromagnet/antiferromagnet exchange bias systems. These include a switchable bias, coercivity enhancement and domain wall roughness that is dependent on the applied field polarity., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

The thermally-driven formation and evolution of vertex domains is studied for square artificial spin ice. A self consistent mean field theory is used to show how domains of ground state ordering form spontaneously, and how these evolve in the presence of disorder. The role of fluctuations is studied, using Monte Carlo simulations and analytical modelling. Domain wall dynamics are shown to be driven by a biasing of random fluctuations towards processes that shrink closed domains, and fluctuations within domains are shown to generate isolated small excitations, which may stabilise as the effective temperature is lowered. Domain dynamics and fluctuations are determined by interaction strengths, which are controlled by inter-element spacing. The role of interaction strength is studied via experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. Our mean field model is applicable to ferroelectric `spin' ice, and we show that features similar to that of magnetic spin ice can be expected, but with different characteristic temperatures and rates., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Using spin waves we directly probe the interface of an exchange biased Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Ir$_{25}$Mn$_{75}$ film which has been modified by the presence of an Au dusting layer. Combining this experimental data with a discretised simulation model, parameters relating to interface exchange coupling and modification of interface magnetisation are determined. Exchange coupling is found to be relatively uniform as gold thickness is increased, and undergoes a sudden drop at 1.5$\textrm{\AA}$ of gold. Interface magnetisation decreases as a function of the gold dusting thickness. Antiparallel alignment of the ferromagnet and antiferromagnet supress the interface magnetisation compared to when they are in parallel alignment. These findings imply that the interface region has specific magnetisation states which depend on the ferromagnet orientation.

Quenched disorder affects how non-equilibrium systems respond to driving. In the context of artificial spin ice, an athermal system comprised of geometrically frustrated classical Ising spins with a two-fold degenerate ground state, we give experimental and numerical evidence of how such disorder washes out edge effects, and provide an estimate of disorder strength in the experimental system. We prove analytically that a sequence of applied fields with fixed amplitude is unable to drive the system to its ground state from a saturated state. The field-induced dynamics of artificial spin ice are determined in part by interactions between magnetic islands, and the switching characteristics of each island. Disorder in either of these affects the response to applied fields. Numerical simulations are used to show that disorder effects are determined primarily by the strength of disorder relative to inter-island interactions, rather than by the type of disorder. We report a novel approach to the question of whether and how the ground state can be achieved in square artificial spin ices where frustration is incomplete. We identify two types of disorder: quenched disorder in the island response to fields and disorder in the sequence of driving fields. Numerical simulations show that quenched disorder can lead to final states with lower energy, and disorder in the driving fields always lowers the final energy attained by the system. We use a network picture to understand these two effects: disorder in island responses creates new dynamical pathways, and disorder in driving fields allows more pathways to be followed., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

A domain wall in a ferromagnetic system will move under the action of an external magnetic field. Ultrathin Co layers sandwiched between Pt have been shown to be a suitable experimental realization of a weakly disordered 2D medium in which to study the dynamics of 1D interfaces (magnetic domain walls). The behavior of these systems is encapsulated in the velocity-field response v(H) of the domain walls. In a recent paper [P.J. Metaxas et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 237206 (2010)] we studied the effect of ferromagnetic coupling between two such ultrathin layers, each exhibiting different v(H) characteristics. The main result was the existence of bound states over finite-width field ranges, wherein walls in the two layers moved together at the same speed. Here, we discuss in detail the theory of domain wall dynamics in coupled systems. In particular, we show that a bound creep state is expected for vanishing H and we give the analytical, parameter free expression for its velocity which agrees well with experimental results., Comment: 9 pages

A numerical implementation of the transition state theory (TST) is presented which can be used to calculate the attempt frequency $f_{0}$ of arbitrary shaped magnetic nanostructures. The micromagnetic equations are discretized using the finite element method. The climbing image nudged elastic band method is used to calculate the saddle point configuration, which is required for the calculation of $f_{0}$. Excellent agreement of the implemented numerical model and analytical solutions is obtained for single domain particles. The developed method is applied to compare $f_{0}$ for single phase and graded media grains of advanced recording media. $f_{0}$ is predicted to be comparable if the maximum anisotropy is the same in these two media types.

La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3/BiFeO3 and La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3/PbZr20Ti80O3 epitaxial heterostructures have been grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Spin wave resonances are used to study interface properties of the ferromagnetic La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. We find that the addition of the BiFeO3 or PbZr20Ti80O3 causes out-of-plane surface pinning of the La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3. We are able to place new limits on the exchange constant D of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO3 grown on these substrates and confirm the presence of uniaxial and biaxial anisotropies caused by the SrTiO3 substrate., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

Copper ferrite thin films were deposited on amorphous quartz substrates. The as deposited films were annealed in air and either quenched or slow cooled. Magnetization studies were carried out on the as deposited as well as annealed films using a SQUID magnetometer. The M-H curves were measured up to a field of 7T, at temperatures varying from 5K to 300K. The magnetization in the films did not saturate, even at the highest field. The expression, M(H)= Q(1- a/H^n) fitted the approach to saturation best with n=1/2, for all films and at all temperatures. The coefficient a was the highest for the as deposited film and was the smallest for the quenched film. In the case of as deposited film, the value of coefficient a increased with increasing temperature, while for the annealed films, the value of a showed a decrease as temperature increases., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The copper ferrite thin films have been deposited by RF sputtering at a 50W rf power. The As-deposited films are annealed in air at $800^{\circ}$C and then slow cooled. The As-deposited (AD) as well as slow cooled (SC) films are studied using a SQUID Magnetometer. The M Vs H curves have been recorded at various temperatures between 5K to 300K. The coercivities obtained from the MH curves are then plotted against temperature (T). The magnetization in the films does not saturate, even at the highest field of 7T. The high field part of the M Vs H curves is fitted using the H1/2 term of Chikazumi expression M(H)= Q*(1- a /Hn), with n=1/2. The variation of coefficient 'a' of H1/2 term has been observed with temperature (T). An attempt has been made to correlate this with the coercivity (Hc) in the case of annealed films., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures

The rf sputtered copper ferrite films contain nanocrystalline grains. In these films, the magnetization does not saturate even in high magnetic fields. This phenomenon of high field susceptibility is attributed to the defects and/or superparamagnetic grains in the films. A simple model is developed to describe the observed high field magnetization behavior of these films. The model is found to fit well to the high field part for all the studied films. An attempt is also made to explain the temperature variation of the ferrimagnetic contribution on the basis of reported exchange constants., Comment: 5 pages + 4 figures

Standing spin wave mode frequencies and linewidths in partially disordered perpendicular magnetized arrays of sub-micron Permalloy discs are measured using broadband ferromagnetic resonance and compared to analytical results from a single, isolated disc. The measured mode structure qualitatively reproduces the structure expected from the theory. Fitted demagnetizing parameters decrease with increasing array disorder. The frequency difference between the first and second radial modes is found to be higher in the measured array systems than predicted by theory for an isolated disc. The relative frequencies between successive spin wave modes are unaffected by reduction of the long-range ordering of discs in the array. An increase in standing spin wave resonance linewidth at low applied magnetic fields is observed and grows more severe with increased array disorder.

The broadband microstrip ferromagnetic resonance technique has been applied for detection and characterization of a magnetic inhomogeneity in a film sample. In the case of a 100nm thick Permalloy film an additional magnetically depleted top sub-layer, practically unidentifiable by the conventional ferromagnetic resonance setup, has been detected and characterized. These results have been confirmed by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy revealing the fact that the optical properties of the additional sub-layer do not differ much from those of the bulk of the film. Subsequent characterization of a large number of other presumably single-layer films with thicknesses in the range 30-100nm using the same ferromagnetic resonance technique also revealed the same effect.

We demonstrate experimentally dynamic interface binding in a system consisting of two coupled ferromagnetic layers. While domain walls in each layer have different velocity-field responses, for two broad ranges of the driving field, H, walls in the two layers are bound and move at a common velocity. The bound states have their own velocity-field response and arise when the isolated wall velocities in each layer are close, a condition which always occurs as H->0. Local magnetic ordering in artificial spin ices is discussed from the point of view of how geometrical frustration controls dynamics and the approach to steady state. We discuss the possibility of using a particle picture based on vertex configurations to interpret time evolution of magnetic configurations. Analysis of possible vertex processes allows us to anticipate different behaviors for open and closed edges and the existence of different field regimes. Numerical simulations confirm these results and also demonstrate the importance of correlations and long range interactions in understanding particle population evolution. We present a theory for surface polaritons on ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic materials with canted spin structure. Canting is assumed to be due to a Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction with the electric polarisation and weak ferromagnetism directed in the plane parallel to the surface. Surface and bulk modes for a semi-infinite film are calculated for the case of transverse magnetic polarisation. Example results are presented using parameters appropriate for BaMnF4. We find that the magnetoelectric interaction gives rise to "leaky" surface modes, i.e. pseudosurface waves that exist in the pass band, and that dissipate energy into the bulk of material. We show that these psuedosurface mode frequencies and properties can be modified by temperature, and application of external electric or magnetic fields., Comment: 17 pages,6 figures

Some magnetoelectric multiferroics have a canted spin structure that can be described by a Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya coupling. We calculate properties and features expected for surface and bulk magnon polaritons in such media with a linear magnetoelectric interaction for the case of transverse electric polarisation. The dielectric polarisation and magnetisation of weak ferromagnetism are constrained to lie in the plane parallel to the surface. We examine a geometry with the polarisation oriented in the film plane and present numerical results for the transverse electric polarisation. Particular attention is given to non-reciprocal surface modes, which exist in frequency between two bulk bands, and show how these modes can be modified by external magnetic field. Results for attenuated total reflection are presented, and discussed in relation to nonreciprocity. Broadband FMR responses for metallic single-layer and bi-layer magnetic films with total thicknesses smaller than the microwave magnetic skin depth have been studied. Two different types of microwave transducers were used to excite and detect magnetization precession: a narrow coplanar waveguide and a wide microstrip line. Both transducers show efficient excitation of higher-order standing spin wave modes. The ratio of amplitudes of the first standing spin wave to the fundamental resonant mode is independent of frequency for single films. In contrast, we find a strong variation of the amplitudes with frequency for bi-layers and the ratio is strongly dependent on the ordering of layers with respect to a stripline transducer. Most importantly, cavity FMR measurements on the same samples show considerably weaker amplitudes for the standing spin waves. All experimental data are consistent with expected effects due to screening by eddy currents in films with thicknesses below the microwave magnetic skin depth. Finally, conditions for observing eddy current effects in different types of experiments are critically examined.

Transmission of microwave spin waves through a microstructured magnonic crystal in the form of a permalloy waveguide of a periodically varying width was studied experimentally and theoretically. The spin wave characteristics were measured by spatially-resolved Brillouin light scattering microscopy. A rejection frequency band was clearly observed. The band gap frequency was controlled by the applied magnetic field. The measured spin-wave intensity as a function of frequency and propagation distance is in good agreement with a model calculation., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We use a Green's function method with Random Phase Approximation to show how magnetic correlations may affect electric polarization in multiferroic materials with magnetic-exchange-type magnetoelectric coupling. We use a model spin 1/2 ferromagnetic ferroelectric system but our results are expected to apply to multiferroic materials with more complex magnetic structures. In particular, we find that transverse magnetic correlations result in a change in the free energy of the ferroelectric solutions leading to the possibility for thermal hysteresis of the electric polarization above the magnetic Curie temperature. Although we are motivated by multiferroic materials, this problem represents a more general calculation of the effect of fluctuations on coupled order parameters.

In the first part of this work we calculate the high frequency magnetoelectric susceptibility of a simultaneously ferroelectric and canted antiferromagnetic (also know as weak ferromagnetic) thin film with magnetostrictive magnetoelectric coupling. We show that a dynamic coupling exists between the ferroelectric and optic antiferromagnetic excitations. In the second part of the paper, we calculate using an effective medium method the susceptibility of a heterostructure comprising alternating thin films of such a material together with a ferromagnet. Dipolar magnetic fields serve to couple the ferromagnetic and optic antiferromagnetic modes, which in turn couples the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric excitations. This provides a mechanism for creating "electromagnon" modes in the microwave regime which may be useful for applications.

Ferromagnetic resonance in conducting magnetic bilayers was studied using microstrip transducers. It was found that excitation or suppression of standing spin waves could be achieved through enhanced inhomogeneity of eddy currents in the bilayer caused by finite thickness. This effect is observable in films with thicknesses below the magnetic skin depth and can be used to study standing spin wave modes in heterostructures.

We studied the dynamic magnetic properties of plane periodical arrays of circular permalloy nano-dots fabricated using a self-organized mask formed by polysterene nanospheres on the surface of a Permalloy film. Conventional (microwave cavity) and broadband coplanar-line ferromagnetic resonance setups were used for the measurements. We found several well resolved resonance peaks. This result shows that the self-organized mask fabrication technique is able to produce high-quality samples with small dispersion of geometrical and magnetic parameters.

We demonstrate the functionality of spin-wave logic XNOR and NAND gates based on a Mach-Zehnder type interferometer which has arms implemented as sections of ferrite film spin-wave waveguides. Logical input signals are applied to the gates by varying either the phase or the amplitude of the spin waves in the interferometer arms. This phase or amplitude variation is produced by Oersted fields of dc current pulses through conductors placed on the surface of the magnetic films., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

The transmission of a dipole-dominated spin wave in a ferromagnetic film through a localised inhomogeneity in the form of a magnetic field produced by a dc current through a wire placed on the film surface was studied experimentally and theoretically. It was shown that the amplitude and phase of the transmitted wave can be simultaneously affected by the current induced field, a feature that will be relevant for logic based on spin wave transport. The direction of the current creates either a barrier or well for spin wave transmission. The main observation is that the current dependence of the amplitude of the spin wave transmitted through the well inhomogeneity is non-monotonic. The dependence has a minimum and an additional maximum. A theory was constructed to clarify the nature of the maximum. It shows that the transmission of spin waves through the inhomogeneity can be considered as a scattering process and that the additional maximum is a scattering resonance.

We report on magnetic domain wall velocity measurements in ultrathin Pt/Co(0.5-0.8 nm)/Pt films with perpendicular anisotropy over a large range of applied magnetic fields. The complete velocity-field characteristics are obtained, enabling an examination of the transition between thermally activated creep and viscous flow: motion regimes predicted from general theories for driven elastic interfaces in weakly disordered media. The dissipation limited flow regime is found to be consistent with precessional domain wall motion, analysis of which yields values for the damping parameter, $\alpha$., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, published in Phys. The phenomena of exchange anisotropy is well known in terms of static magnetization properties such as enhanced coercivity and magnetization loop shifts. These effects are primarily associated with effective anisotropies introduced into the ferromagnet by exchange coupling with a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnet. These effective anisotropies can be understood as manifestations of a more fundamental exchange induced susceptibility. We show that a consequence of this view is that a class of unusual dynamic effects associated with the exchange susceptibility should also exist. The effects become apparent near the ordering temperature of the antiferromagnet and affect domain wall velocities, domain wall resonances, and precessional switching of the ferromagnet.

Spin wave frequencies are observed in ultra-thin Fe/GaAs(100) films at temperatures where the spontaneous zero field magnetization is zero. The films exhibit good cyrstalline structure, and the effect of magnetic anisotropies is apparent even though no zero field spin wave energy gap exists. An analysis is given in terms of a superparamagnetic model in which the film is treated as a network of non-interacting single domain magnetic islands. A spin wave analysis provides a means to separate measured values of anisotropy parameters from products involving anisotropy and island volume. In this way, a measure of the activation volume associated with superparamagnetic islands is obtained for different Fe film thicknesses. Results suggest that the island lateral area increases with increasing film thickness.

An infinite triangular lattice of classical dipolar spins is usually considered to have a ferromagnetic ground state. We examine the validity of this statement for finite lattices and in the limit of large lattices. We find that the ground state of rectangular arrays is strongly dependent on size and aspect ratio. Three results emerge that are significant for understanding the ground state properties: i) formation of domain walls is energetically favored for aspect ratios below a critical valu e; ii) the vortex state is always energetically favored in the thermodynamic limit of an infinite number of spins, but nevertheless such a configuration may not be observed even in very large lattices if the aspect ratio is large; iii) finite range approximations to actual dipole sums may not provide the correct ground sta te configuration because the ferromagnetic state is linearly unstable and the domain wall energy is negative for any finite range cutoff., Comment: Several short parts have been rewritten. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the stability of the ferromagnetic ground state in three-dimensional systems of Ising dipoles with added quenched disorder. These systems model the collective ferromagnetic order observed in various systems with dipolar long-range interactions. The uniaxial dipolar spins are arranged on a face-centred cubic lattice with periodic boundary conditions. Finite-size scaling relations for the pure dipolar ferromagnetic system are derived by a renormalisation group calculation. These functions include logarithmic corrections to the expected mean field behaviour since the system is in its upper critical dimension. Scaled data confirm the validity of the finite-size scaling description and results are compared with subsequent analysis of weakly disordered systems. The field-driven reorientation transition of an anisotropic ferromagnetic monolayer is studied within the context of a finite-temperature Green's function theory. The equilibrium state and the field dependence of the magnon energy gap $E_0$ are calculated for static magnetic field $H$ applied in plane along an easy or a hard axis. In the latter case, the in-plane reorientation of the magnetization is shown to be continuous at T=0, in agreement with free spin wave theory, and discontinuous at finite temperature $T>0$, in contrast with the prediction of mean field theory. The discontinuity in the orientation angle creates a jump in the magnon energy gap, and it is the reason why, for $T>0$, the energy does not go to zero at the reorientation field. Above the Curie temperature $T_C$, the magnon energy gap $E_0(H)$ vanishes for H=0 both in the easy and in the hard case. As $H$ is increased, the gap is found to increase almost linearly with $H$, but with different slopes depending on the field orientation. In particular, the slope is smaller when $H$ is along the hard axis. Such a magnetic anisotropy of the spin-wave energies is shown to persist well above $T_C$ ($T \approx 1.2 T_C$)., Comment: Final version accepted for publication in Physical Review B (with three figures)

A vector spin model is used to show how frustrations within a multisublattice antiferromagnet such as FeMn can lead to four-fold magnetic anisotropies acting on an exchange coupled ferromagnetic film. Possibilities for the existence of exchange bias are examined and shown to exist for the case of weak chemical disorder at the interface in an otherwise perfect structure. A sensitive dependence on interlayer exchange is found for anisotropies acting on the ferromagnet through the exchange coupling, and we show that a wide range of anisotropies can appear even for a perfect crystalline structure with an ideally flat interface., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures
