Rationale and Objectives Innovation and entrepreneurship in health care can help solve the current health care crisis by creating products and services that improve quality and convenience while reducing costs. Materials and Methods To effectively drive innovation and entrepreneurship within the current health care delivery environment, academic institutions will need to provide education, promote networking across disciplines, align incentives, and adapt institutional cultures. This article provides a general review of entrepreneurship and commercialization from the perspective of academic radiology departments, drawing on information sources in several disciplines including radiology, medicine, law, and business. Conclusions Our review will discuss the role of universities in supporting academic entrepreneurship, identify drivers of entrepreneurship, detail opportunities for academic radiologists, and outline key strategies that foster greater involvement of radiologists in entrepreneurial efforts and encourage leadership to embrace and support entrepreneurship.

OBJECTIVE: To determine factors affecting liver and bile duct contrast enhancement during computed tomographic cholangiography (CTC) in living-donor transplant candidates. METHODS: Forty-four candidates underwent preoperative triphasic CT followed by intravenous infusion of 20 mL of iodipamide for CTC. Body size indices and liver volume were correlated to parenchymal and biliary enhancement. Bile duct visibility was compared to duct enhancement. RESULTS: Poorly visualized first- and second-order bile ducts demonstrated diminished enhancement (P < 0.015). Both CTC parenchymal and biliary enhancement correlated inversely with body surface area, height, and weight (P < 0.001); inverse correlation was also seen between liver volume and parenchymal enhancement (P < 0.001). A moderately positive correlation was noted between CTC biliary and parenchymal portal venous enhancement (r = 0.421; P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Computed tomographic cholangiography parenchymal and biliary enhancement diminishes with increased body size and liver volume, supporting a need for adjustable contrast dosing. Portal venous parenchymal enhancement may serve as a preinfusion indicator.

Ongoing concerns over the rising cost of health care are driving large-scale changes in the way that health care is practiced and reimbursed in the United States. To effectively implement and thrive within this new health care delivery environment, academic medical institutions will need to modify financial and business models and adapt institutional cultures. In this paper, we review the expected features of the new health care environment from the perspective of academic radiology departments. Our review will include background on Accountable Care Organizations, identify challenges associated with the new managed care model, and outline key strategies—including expanding the use of existing information technology infrastructure, promoting continued medical innovation, balancing academic research with clinical care, and exploring new roles for radiologists in efficient patient management—that will ensure continued success for academic radiology.

The new emerging areas of applications in Tele-Education and Telemedicine, promise to globalize quality education and bring a new dimension to health care. The major logistic problem in the global implementation of such services is the lack of adequate means of telecommunications throughout the Developing World, where these services are needed the most. MEDSAT is envisioned as a satellite telecommunication system for Disaster Relief, Telemedicine and Distance Learning and in this paper we describe the EWSSC approach of a ground based VSAT network, both fixed and transportable, in order to provide flexible and affordable access to spacetelecommunication services. This concept intends to close the existing telecommunications gap for disaster relief, telemedicine, and tele-education aimed at developing countries with poor telecommunications infrastructure and remote/rural areas.
