The exploration of interplanetary space and our solar bubble, the heliosphere, has made a big leap over the past two decades, due to the path-breaking observations of the two Voyager spacecraft, launched more than 44 years ago. Their in-situ particle and fields measurements were complemented by remote observations of 5.2 to 55 keV Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENA) from the Cassini mission (Ion and Neutral Camera-INCA), revealing a number of previously unanticipated heliospheric structures such as the “Belt”, a region of enhanced particle pressure inside the heliosheath. The Suprathermal Time Of Flight (HSTOF) instrument on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) also provided information of 58–88 keV ENAs from the heliosphere. In this chapter we provide a brief discussion for the contribution of the Voyager 1 and 2 Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) observations that provided “ground truth” to the ENA images from Cassini/INCA towards addressing fundamental questions for the heliosphere’s interaction with the Very Local Interstellar Medium.

The long-anticipated encounter by Voyager 2 (V2) of the region between the heliosphere and the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) occurred toward the end of 2018. Here, we report measurements of energetic (>28 keV) charged particles on V2 from the interface region between the heliosheath, dominated by heated solar wind plasma, and the VLISM, expected to contain cold non-solar plasma and the Galactic magnetic field. The number of particles of solar origin began a gradual decrease on 7 August 2018 (118.2 au), while those of Galactic origin (Galactic cosmic rays) increased ~20% in number over a period of a few weeks. An abrupt change occurred on 5 November when V2 was located at 119 au, with a decrease in the number of particles at energies of >28 keV and a corresponding increase in the number of Galactic cosmic rays of energy E > 213 MeV. This signature of the transition to the VLISM resembles, but is very different from, that observed on Voyager 1 at ~121.6 au, associated with the putative crossing of the heliopause some six years earlier. Measurements of energetic ions and electrons with the Low-Energy Charged Particle instrument on Voyager 2 are presented from the boundary of the heliosphere and from the interstellar medium. Voyager 2’s heliopause crossing bears some similarity to that of Voyager 1, despite differing solar wind conditions.

On 10 January 2001, Cassini briefly entered into the magnetosphere of Jupiter, en route to Saturn. During this excursion into the Jovian magnetosphere, the Cassini Magnetosphere Imaging Instrument/Charge‐Energy‐Mass Spectrometer detected oxygen and sulfur ions. While Charge‐Energy‐Mass Spectrometer can distinguish between oxygen and sulfur charge states directly, only 95.9 ± 2.9 keV/e ions were sampled during this interval, allowing for a long time integration of the tenuous outer magnetospheric (~200 RJ) plasma at one energy. For this brief interval for the 95.9 keV/e ions, 96% of oxygen ions were O+, with the other 4% as O2+, while 25% of the energetic sulfur ions were S+, 42% S2+, and 33% S3+. Exploration of the heliosphere and the far reaches of our solar system by the Voyagers and New Horizons and near-Earth observations of the Kuiper Belt and exoplanetary systems have all profoundly changed how we view our own home in space. An Interstellar Probe escaping beyond the solar-system boundaries with new observational techniques would be a bold move in space exploration, enabling detailed, new understanding of the global heliosphere in the context of other astrospheres, further discoveries of unexplored Kuiper Belt Objects, and the first observations of our circumsolar dust disk. These would offer insight into the evolution of the solar system and our understanding of exoplanetary systems. With the power supplies on the Voyagers nearing their end of life, the rapid pace of discovery of exoplanets in other stellar systems, and the evolution in our own understanding brought about by results from the Voyager, Cassini, and Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft, the time is right for looking at the next steps we can make into our stellar neighborhood. The question facing us today is what the appropriate next step - a true first step - is in negotiating the transition from science fiction to engineering reality. The scientific imperatives associated with reaching the near interstellar medium in order to understand our origins and our own current locale in the Milky Way trace to the beginnings of the Space Age, and they have been debated and refined since that time and into the current epoch. The subjects of interstellar travel, interstellar probes, and interstellar “precursor” missions are not new but have lacked traction with policy makers and the scientific community at large because of the states of both scientific knowledge and engineering realities. The next step in reaching to the stars will require the recognition of engineering limits, scientific trades, and scientific compromises, but this is new neither in science nor exploration. Such a step would be an “Interstellar Probe.” The time for that step has come.

Pluto energies of a few kiloelectron volts and suprathermal ions with tens of kiloelectron volts and above. We measure this population using the Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation (PEPSSI) instrument on board the New Horizons spacecraft that flew by Pluto in 2015. Even though the measured ions have gyroradii larger than the size of Pluto and the cross section of its magnetosphere, we find that the boundary of the magnetosphere is depleting the energetic ion intensities by about an order of magnitude close to Pluto. The intensity is increasing exponentially with distance to Pluto and reaches nominal levels of the interplanetary medium at about 190

The inner boundary of Saturn's electron radiation belts, near the planet's A‐ring (∼2.27 Rs), is studied using Cassini's Proximal orbit measurements. We find that variable convective flows transport energetic electrons to the A‐ring, which absorbs them instantaneously, forming the inner belt boundary. These flows are also responsible for a variable and longitudinally asymmetric boundary configuration. Pre‐noon, the boundary oscillates towards and away from the A‐ring with a two‐week period. Post‐noon, it maps persistently near the F‐ring (∼2.32 Rs) and coexists with localized MeV electron intensity enhancements (microbelts). We propose that the microbelts contain electrons in drift resonance with corotation, trapped in local‐time confined trajectories which result from the aforementioned convective flows. The microbelts' collocation with the F‐ring implies either a local, secondary electron production due to Galactic Cosmic Ray collisions with F‐ring dust, or an enhanced resonant electron trapping due to an electrodynamic interaction between the F‐ring and Saturn's magnetosphere.

The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) suite on board NASA’s Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed six distinct enhancements in the intensities of suprathermal-through-energetic (∼0.03–3 MeV nucleon−1) He ions associated with corotating or stream interaction regions (CIR or SIR) during its first two orbits. Our results from a survey of the time histories of the He intensities, spectral slopes, and anisotropies and the event-averaged energy spectra during these events show the following: (1) In the two strongest enhancements, seen at 0.35 and 0.85 au, the higher-energy ions arrive and maximize later than those at lower energies. In the event seen at 0.35 au, the He ions arrive when PSP was away from the SIR trailing edge and entered the rarefaction region in the high-speed stream. (2) The He intensities either are isotropic or show sunward anisotropies in the spacecraft frame. (3) In all events, the energy spectra between ∼0.2 and 1 MeV nucleon−1 are power laws of the form ∝E −2. In the two strongest events, the energy spectra are well represented by flat power laws between ∼0.03 and 0.4 MeV nucleon−1 modulated by exponential rollovers between ∼0.4 and 3 MeV nucleon−1. We conclude that the SIR-associated He ions originate from sources or shocks beyond PSP’s location rather than from acceleration processes occurring at nearby portions of local compression regions. Our results also suggest that rarefaction regions that typically follow the SIRs facilitate easier particle transport throughout the inner heliosphere such that low-energy ions do not undergo significant energy loss due to adiabatic deceleration, contrary to predictions of existing models.

We surveyed energetic charged particle measurements by Cassini between 2016 and the end of the mission in order to identify transients of solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays. Such transients offer hints about the state of the heliosphere and valuable context for interpreting space weather phenomena in Saturn's magnetosphere. The period studied includes the mission's Ring-Grazing and Proximal orbits, which due to their week-long periods are ideal for capturing short timescale dynamics in the planet's magnetosphere, including solar periodicities. We find that Saturn was exposed to corotating interaction regions for nearly all the 21 final months of Cassini and encountered just two interplanetary coronal mass ejections. Several independent studies report solar periodicities and storm-time conditions in the magnetosphere at times, which coincide with the transients that we identify here.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe mission1 recently plunged through the inner heliosphere of the Sun to its perihelia, about 24 million kilometres from the Sun. Previous studies farther from the Sun (performed mostly at a distance of 1 astronomical unit) indicate that solar energetic particles are accelerated from a few kiloelectronvolts up to near-relativistic energies via at least two processes: ‘impulsive’ events, which are usually associated with magnetic reconnection in solar flares and are typically enriched in electrons, helium-3 and heavier ions2, and ‘gradual’ events3,4, which are typically associated with large coronal-mass-ejection-driven shocks and compressions moving through the corona and inner solar wind and are the dominant source of protons with energies between 1 and 10 megaelectronvolts. However, some events show aspects of both processes and the electron–proton ratio is not bimodally distributed, as would be expected if there were only two possible processes5. These processes have been very difficult to resolve from prior observations, owing to the various transport effects that affect the energetic particle population en route to more distant spacecraft6. Here we report observations of the near-Sun energetic particle radiation environment over the first two orbits of the probe. We find a variety of energetic particle events accelerated both locally and remotely including by corotating interaction regions, impulsive events driven by acceleration near the Sun, and an event related to a coronal mass ejection. We provide direct observations of the energetic particle radiation environment in the region just above the corona of the Sun and directly explore the physics of particle acceleration and transport. The Parker Solar Probe mission has reached the inner heliosphere of the Sun and made measurements of energetic particle events in the near-Sun radiation environment.

A solar energetic particle event was detected by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (ISOIS) instrument suite on Parker Solar Probe (PSP) on 2019 April 4 when the spacecraft was inside of 0.17 au and less than 1 day before its second perihelion, providing an opportunity to study solar particle acceleration and transport unprecedentedly close to the source. The event was very small, with peak 1 MeV proton intensities of ~0.3 particles (cm^2 sr s MeV)^-1, and was undetectable above background levels at energies above 10 MeV or in particle detectors at 1 au. It was strongly anisotropic, with intensities flowing outward from the Sun up to 30 times greater than those flowing inward persisting throughout the event. Temporal association between particle increases and small brightness surges in the extreme-ultraviolet observed by the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory, which were also accompanied by type III radio emission seen by the Electromagnetic Fields Investigation on PSP, indicates that the source of this event was an active region nearly 80 degrees east of the nominal PSP magnetic footpoint. This suggests that the field lines expanded over a wide longitudinal range between the active region in the photosphere and the corona.

Between April and the end of its mission on 15 September, Cassini executed a series of 22 very similar 6.5‐day‐period proximal orbits, covering the mid‐latitude region of the nightside magnetosphere. These passes provided us with the opportunity to examine the variability of the nightside plasma sheet within this time scale for the first time. We use Cassini particle and magnetic field data to quantify the magnetospheric dynamics along these orbits, as reflected in the variability of certain relevant plasma parameters, including the energetic ion pressure and partial (hot) plasma beta. We use the University College London/Achilleos‐Guio‐Arridge magnetodisk model to map these quantities to the conjugate magnetospheric equator, thus providing an equivalent equatorial radial profile for these parameters. By quantifying the variation in the plasma parameters, we further identify the different states of the nightside ring current (quiescent and disturbed) in order to confirm and add to the context previously established by analogous studies based on long‐term, near‐equatorial measurements.

The short, 7.2-day orbital period of Cassini’s Ring Grazing Orbits (RGO) provided an opportunity to monitor how fast the effects of an intense magnetospheric storm-time period (days 336–343/2016) propagated into Saturn’s electron radiation belts. Following the storms, Cassini’s MIMI/LEMMS instrument detected a transient extension of the electron radiation belts that in subsequent orbits moved towards the inner belts, intensifying them in the process. This intensification was followed by an equally fast decay, possibly due to the rapid absorption of MeV electrons by the planet’s main rings. Surprisingly, all this cycle was completed within four RGOs, effectively in less than a month. That is considerably faster than the year-long time scales of Saturn’s proton radiation belt evolution. In order to explain this difference, we propose that electron radial transport is partly controlled by the variability of global scale electric fields which have a fixed local time pointing. Such electric fields may distort significantly the orbits of a particular class of energetic electrons that cancel out magnetospheric corotation due to their westward gradient and curvature drifts (termed “corotation-resonant” or “local-time stationary” electrons) and transport them radially between the ring current and the radiation belts within several days and few weeks. The significance of the proposed process is highlighted by the fact that corotation resonance at Saturn occurs for electrons of few hundred keV to several MeV. These are the characteristic energies of seed electrons from the ring current that sustain the radiation belts of the planet. Our model’s feasibility is demonstrated through the use of a simple test-particle simulation, where we estimate that uniform but variable electric fields with magnitudes lower that 1.0 mV/m can lead to a very efficient transport of corotation resonant electrons. Such electric fields have been consistently measured in the magnetosphere, and here we provide additional evidence showing that they may be constantly present all the way down to the outer edge of Saturn’s main rings, further supporting our model. The implications of our findings are not limited to Saturn. Corotation resonance at Jupiter occurs for electrons with energies above about 10 MeV throughout the quasi-dipolar, energetic particle-trapping region of the magnetosphere. The proposed process could in principle then lead to rapid transport and adiabatic acceleration electrons into ultra-relativistic energies. The observation by Galileo’s EPD/LEMMS instrument of an intense Jovian acceleration event at the orbital distance of Ganymede during the mission’s C22 orbit, when > 11 MeV electron fluxes were preferentially enhanced, provides additional support to our transport model and insights on the origin of that orbit’s extreme energetic electron environment. Finally, if the mode of radial transport that we describe here is a dominant one, radial diffusion coefficients (DLL) would be subject to strong energy, pitch angle and species dependencies.

The lack of an upstream solar wind monitor poses a major challenge to any study that investigates the influence of the solar wind on the configuration and the dynamics of Saturn’s magnetosphere. Here we show how Cassini MIMI/LEMMS observations of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) and Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) transients, that are both linked to energetic processes in the heliosphere such us Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs) and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs), can be used to trace enhanced solar wind conditions at Saturn’s distance. SEP protons can be easily distinguished from magnetospheric ions, particularly at the MeV energy range. Many SEPs are also accompanied by strong GCR Forbush Decreases. GCRs are detectable as a low count-rate noise signal in a large number of LEMMS channels. As SEPs and GCRs can easily penetrate into the outer and middle magnetosphere, they can be monitored continuously, even when Cassini is not situated in the solar wind. A survey of the MIMI/LEMMS dataset between 2004 and 2016 resulted in the identification of 46 SEP events. Most events last more than two weeks and have their lowest occurrence rate around the extended solar minimum between 2008 and 2010, suggesting that they are associated to ICMEs rather than CIRs, which are the main source of activity during the declining phase and the minimum of the solar cycle. We also list of 17 time periods ( > 50 days each) where GCRs show a clear solar periodicity ( ∼ 13 or 26 days). The 13-day period that derives from two CIRs per solar rotation dominates over the 26-day period in only one of the 17 cases catalogued. This interval belongs to the second half of 2008 when expansions of Saturn’s electron radiation belts were previously reported to show a similar periodicity. That observation not only links the variability of Saturn’s electron belts to solar wind processes, but also indicates that the source of the observed periodicity in GCRs may be local. In this case GCR measurements can be used to provide the phase of CIRs at Saturn. We further demonstrate the utility of our survey results by determining that: (a) Magnetospheric convection induced by solar wind disturbances associated with SEPs is a necessary driver for the formation of transient radiation belts that were observed throughout Saturn’s magnetosphere on several occasions during 2005 and on day 105 of 2012. (b) An enhanced solar wind perturbation period that is connected to an SEP of day 332/2013 was the definite source of a strong magnetospheric compression which led to open flux loading in the magnetotail. Finally, we propose how the event lists can define the basis for single case studies or statistical investigations on how Saturn and its moons (particularly Titan) respond to extreme solar wind conditions or on the transport of SEPs and GCRs in the heliosphere.

We analyze particle and magnetic field data obtained between July 2004 and December 2013 in the equatorial magnetosphere of Saturn, by the Cassini spacecraft. The radial and local time distribution of the total (thermal and suprathermal) particle pressure and total plasma beta (ratio of particle to magnetic pressure) over radial distances from 5 to 16 Saturn radii (RS = 60,258 km) is presented. The average azimuthal current density Jϕ and its separate components (inertial, pressure gradient, and anisotropy) are computed as a function of radial distance and local time and presented as equatorial maps. We explore the relative contribution of different physical mechanisms that drive the ring current at Saturn. Results show that (a) the particle pressure is controlled by thermal plasma inside of ~8 RS and by the hot ions beyond ~12 RS, exhibiting strong local time asymmetry with higher pressures measured at the dusk and night sectors; (b) the plasma beta increases with radial distance and remains >1 beyond 8–10 RS for all local times; (c) the ring current is asymmetric in local time and forms a maximum region between ~7 and ~13 RS, with values up to 100–115 pA/m2; and (d) the ring current is inertial everywhere inside of 7 RS, exhibits a mixed nature between 7 and 11 RS and is pressure gradient driven beyond 11 RS, with the exception of the noon sector where the mixed nature persists. In the dawn sector, it appears strongly pressure gradient driven for a wider range of radial distance, consistent with fast return flow of hot, tenuous magnetospheric plasma following tail reconnection.

Cassini's last look at Saturn's rings During the final stages of the Cassini mission, the spacecraft flew between the planet and its rings, providing a new view on this spectacular system (see the Perspective by Ida). Setting the scene, Spilker reviews the numerous discoveries made using Cassini during the 13 years it spent orbiting Saturn. Iess et al. measured the gravitational pull on Cassini, separating the contributions from the planet and the rings. This allowed them to determine the interior structure of Saturn and the mass of its rings. Buratti et al. present observations of five small moons located in and around the rings. The moons each have distinctive shapes and compositions, owing to accretion of ring material. Tiscareno et al. observed the rings directly at close range, finding complex features sculpted by the gravitational interactions between moons and ring particles. Together, these results show that Saturn's rings are substantially younger than the planet itself and constrain models of their origin. The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. We report "ground truth", 28-3500 keV in-situ ion and 5.2-55 keV remotely sensed ENA measurements from Voyager 2/Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) detector and Cassini/Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA), respectively, that assess the components of the ion pressure in the heliosheath. In this process, we predict an interstellar neutral hydrogen density of ~0.12 cm-3 and an interstellar magnetic field strength of ~0.5 nT upstream of the heliopause in the direction of V2, i.e. consistent with the measured magnetic field and neutral density measurements at Voyager 1 from August 2012, when the spacecraft entered interstellar space, to date. Further, this analysis results in an estimated heliopause crossing by V2 of ~119 AU, as observed, suggesting that the parameters deduced from the pressure analysis are valid. The shape of the >5.2 keV ion energy spectra play a critical role towards determining the pressure balance and acceleration mechanisms inside the heliosheath.

We report a unique combination of ~10 eV to ~344 MeV in situ ion measurements from the Plasma Science (PLS), Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP), and Cosmic Ray Subsystem (CRS) experiments on the Voyager 2 (V2) spacecraft, and remotely sensed ~110 eV to ~55 keV energetic neutral atom (ENA) measurements from the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission and Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA) on the Cassini mission. This combination is done over the time period from 2009 to the end of 2016, along the V2 trajectory, toward assessing the properties of the ion energy spectra inside the heliosheath. The combined energy spectra exhibit a series of softening and hardening breaks, providing important insights on the various ion acceleration processes inside the heliosheath. Ions in the 5.2 keV) provide a significant contribution to the total pressure. With the assumption that all ENAs (~110 eV to 55 keV) are created by charge-exchange interactions inside the heliosheath, we estimate that the magnetic field upstream at the heliopause required to balance the pressure from the heliosheath in the direction of V2 is ~0.67 nT. This number is consistent with the measured magnetic field at V2 from 2018 November, when the spacecraft entered interstellar space.

The Voyager 1 (V1) and Voyager 2 (V2) spacecraft were launched in 1977 on a mission to explore the outer planets and reach the heliopause, the boundary between the hot solar plasma and the relatively cool interstellar plasma. V1 reached the heliopause on 2012 August 25, at 121.6 au, and V2 reached the heliopause on 2018 November 5, at 119.0 au. One of their remarkable discoveries was the detection of shocks propagating into the interstellar plasma from energetic solar events. These shocks are typically preceded by electron plasma oscillations excited by electron beams streaming along interstellar magnetic field lines ahead of the shocks. The frequencies of the plasma oscillations have now provided radial electron density profiles in the outer heliosphere and in the interstellar medium to radial distances of more than 145 au. The oscillations are typically preceded by bursts of high-energy ~5–100 MeV electrons. These electron bursts are interpreted as being due to the reflection (and acceleration) of cosmic-ray electrons by the shock at the time the shock first contacts the magnetic field line that passes through the spacecraft. Relative timing between the cosmic rays reflected by the shock and the onset of the plasma oscillations allow us, for the first time, to estimate the energy, ~20–100 eV, of the electron beams responsible for the plasma oscillations. These observations are combined into a self-consistent model called the foreshock model that describes the interaction of shocks of solar origin with the interstellar plasma.

We augment the heliospheric network of galactic cosmic ray (GCR) monitors using 2012–2017 penetrating radiation measurements from the New Horizons (NH) Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation (PEPSSI), obtaining intensities of ≳75 MeV particles. The new, predominantly GCR observations provide critical links between the Sun and Voyager 2 and Voyager 1 (V2 and V1), in the heliosheath and local interstellar medium (LISM), respectively. We provide NH, Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), V2, and V1 GCR observations, using them to track solar cycle variations and short-term Forbush decreases from the Sun to the LISM, and to examine the interaction that results in the surprising, previously reported V1 LISM anisotropy episodes. To investigate these episodes and the hitherto unexplained lagging of associated in situ shock features at V1, propagating disturbances seen at ACE, NH, and V2 were compared to V1. We conclude that the region where LISM magnetic field lines drape around the heliopause is likely critical for communicating solar disturbance signals upstream of the heliosheath to V1. We propose that the anisotropy-causing physical process that suppresses intensities at ∼90° pitch angles relies on GCRs escaping from a single compression in the draping region, not on GCRs trapped between two compressions. We also show that NH suprathermal and energetic particle data from PEPSSI are consistent with the interpretation that traveling shocks and corotating interaction region (CIR) remnants can be distinguished by the existence or lack of Forbush decreases, respectively, because turbulent magnetic fields at local shocks inhibit GCR transport while older CIR structures reaching the outer heliosphere do not.

Spatial gradients of galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) fluxes are important for studying charged particle transport in the heliosphere. Little is known so far about how these gradients evolve with time. Here we present how the radial gradient (G r ) evolves between 2006 January and 2017 September using Cassini measurements of >300 MeV protons, which we combine with proton spectra obtained by advanced observatories at Earth (BESS, BESS-Polar, PAMELA, and AMS-02). All gradient calculations were performed for a nearly constant heliocentric distance of Cassini from Earth’s orbit and near the ecliptic, thus revealing only how G r changes with time. The variability patterns of G r are well established as they rely on a single data set for ∼9.5 au and accurately cross-calibrated GCR spectra for Earth at 1 au. We show that over solar-cycle timescales, G r is regulated by both the polarity of the solar magnetic field and the solar-cycle phase. During the negative-polarity phase (A 0 phase (2014–2017). Regular G r enhancements over yearly or biennial timescales are also observed, in phase with quasi-biennial oscillations in GCR intensity. While all aforementioned results are based on Cassini measurements that are integral in energy, they are most representative for GCR protons in the low gigaelectronvolt range.

A survey of Cassini MIMI/LEMMS data acquired between 2004 and 2015 has led to the identification of 13 energetic electron microsignatures that can be attributed to particle losses on one of the several faint rings of the planet. Most of the signatures were detected near L-shells that map between the orbits of Mimas and Enceladus or near the G-ring. Our analysis indicates that it is very unlikely for these signatures to have originated from absorption on Mimas, Enceladus or unidentified Moons and rings, even though most were not found exactly at the L-shells of the known rings of the saturnian system (G-ring, Methone, Anthe, Pallene). The lack of additional absorbers is apparent in the L-shell distribution of MeV ions which are very sensitive for tracing the location of weakly absorbing material permanently present in Saturn’s radiation belts. This sensitivity is demonstrated by the identification, for the first time, of the proton absorption signatures from the asteroid-sized Moons Pallene, Anthe and/or their rings. For this reason, we investigate the possibility that the 13 energetic electron events formed at known saturnian rings and the resulting depletions were later displaced radially by one or more magnetospheric processes. Our calculations indicate that the displacement magnitude for several of those signatures is much larger than the one that can be attributed to radial flows imposed by the recently discovered noon-to-midnight electric field in Saturn’s inner magnetosphere. This observation is consistent with a mechanism where radial plasma velocities are enhanced near dusty obstacles. Several possibilities are discussed that may explain this observation, including a dust-driven magnetospheric interchange instability, mass loading by the pick-up of nanometer charged dust grains and global magnetospheric electric fields induced by perturbed orbits of charged dust due to the act of solar radiation pressure. Indirect evidence for a global scale interaction between the magnetosphere and Saturn’s faint rings that may drive such radial transport processes may also exist in previously reported measurements of plasma density by Cassini. Alternative explanations that do not involve enhanced plasma transport near the rings require the presence of a transient absorbing medium, such as E-ring clumps. Such clumps may form at the L-shell range where microsignatures have been observed due to resonances between charged dust and corotating magnetospheric structures, but remote imaging observations of the E-ring are not consistent with such a scenario.

The magnetospheric cusps are important sites of the coupling of a magnetosphere with the solar wind. The combination of both ground- and space-based observations at Earth have enabled considerable progress to be made in understanding the terrestrial cusp and its role in the coupling of the magnetosphere to the solar wind via the polar magnetosphere. Voyager 2 fully explored Neptune's cusp in 1989 but highly inclined orbits of the Cassini spacecraft at Saturn present the most recent opportunity to repeatedly studying the polar magnetosphere of a rapidly rotating planet. In this paper we discuss observations made by Cassini during two passes through Saturn's southern polar magnetosphere. Our main findings are that i) Cassini directly encounters the southern polar cusp with evidence for the entry of magnetosheath plasma into the cusp via magnetopause reconnection, ii) magnetopause reconnection and entry of plasma into the cusp can occur over a range of solar wind conditions, and iii) double cusp morphologies are consistent with the position of the cusp oscillating in phase with Saturn's global magnetospheric periodicities., Journal accepted version before copy-editing: 55 pages, 12 figures. The MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission to Mercury has provided a wealth of new data about energetic particle phenomena. With observations from MESSENGER's Energetic Particle Spectrometer, as well as data arising from energetic electrons recorded by the X‐Ray Spectrometer and Gamma‐Ray and Neutron Spectrometer (GRNS) instruments, recent work greatly extends our record of the acceleration, transport, and loss of energetic electrons at Mercury. The combined data sets include measurements from a few keV up to several hundred keV in electron kinetic energy and have permitted relatively good spatial and temporal resolution for many events. We focus here on the detailed nature of energetic electron bursts measured by the GRNS system, and we place these events in the context of solar wind and magnetospheric forcing at Mercury. Our examination of data at high temporal resolution (10 ms) during the period March 2013 through October 2014 supports strongly the view that energetic electrons are accelerated in the near‐tail region of Mercury's magnetosphere and are subsequently “injected” onto closed magnetic field lines on the planetary nightside. Quasi-periodic, short-period injections of relativistic electrons have been observed in both Jupiter’s and Saturn’s magnetospheres, but understanding their origin or significance has been challenging, primarily due to the limited number of in-situ observations of such events by past flyby missions. Here we present the first survey of such injections in an outer planetary magnetosphere using almost nine years of energetic charged particle and magnetic field measurements at Saturn. We focus on events with a characteristic period of about 60–70 min (QP60, where QP stands for quasi-periodic). We find that the majority of QP60, which are very common in the outer magnetosphere, map outside Titan’s orbit. QP60 are also observed over a very wide range of local times and latitudes. A local time asymmetry in their distribution is the most striking feature, with QP60 at dusk being between 5 and 25 times more frequent than at dawn. Field-line tracing and pitch angle distributions suggest that most events at dusk reside on closed field lines. They are distributed either near the magnetopause, or, in the case of the post-dusk (or pre-midnight) sector, up to about 30 RSRS inside it, along an area extending parallel to the dawn–dusk direction. QP60 at dawn map either on open field lines and/or near the magnetopause. Both the asymmetries and varying mapping characteristics as a function of local time indicate that generation of QP60 cannot be assigned to a single process. The locations of QP60 seem to trace sites that reconnection is expected to take place. In that respect, the subset of events observed post-dusk and deep inside the magnetopause may be directly or indirectly linked to the Vasyliunas reconnection cycle, while magnetopause reconnection/Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability could be invoked to explain all other events at the duskside. Using similar arguments, injections at the dawnside magnetosphere may result from solar-wind induced storms and/or magnetopause reconnection/KH-instability. Still, we cannot exclude that the apparent collocation of QP60 with expected reconnection sites is coincidental. given also the large uncertainties in field line tracing with the available magnetic field models. The intensity of the QP60 spectrum is strong enough such that if transport processes allow, these injections can be a very important source of energetic electrons for the inner saturnian magnetosphere or the heliosphere. We also observe that electrons in a QP60 can be accelerated at least up to 6 MeV and that the distribution of QP60 appears to trace well the aurora’s local time structure, an observation that may have implications about high-latitude electron acceleration and the connection of these events to auroral dynamics. Despite these new findings, it is still unclear what determines the rather well-defined 60 to 70-min period of the electron bursts and how electrons can rapidly reach several MeV.

We present new energetic neutral atom (ENA) maps from the Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA) instrument on Cassini from the year 2000, prior to Cassini’s encounter with Jupiter. These maps are the first produced for the year 2000 and are the only maps with comprehensive spatial coverage from the peak of solar cycle 23. These ENA maps span the energy range from 5.2 to 55 keV covering the pickup to suprathermal energy range. These maps represent a novel glimpse into the influence of the solar cycle on the structure of the outer heliosphere, specifically on the heliosheath where pickup and suprathermal ions dominate. The observations are consistent with the picture of the heliosheath from previous observations by the Cassini, Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX), and Voyager missions. These maps have some consistent spatial features to maps produced by Cassini during solar cycle 24 such as reduced intensities in the mid-latitude basins. These maps also have distinct spatial features such as enhanced intensities at the poles and reduced intensities at the low-latitude flanks. These maps do not indicate a strong intensity increase in the regions adjacent to the nose and also show an intensity increase in the regions adjacent to the tailward direction.

The Energetic Particle Instrument–Low Energy (EPI-Lo) experiment has detected several weak, low-energy (~30–300 keV nucleon⁻¹) solar energetic particle (SEP) events during its first two closest approaches to the Sun, providing a unique opportunity to explore the sources of low-energy particle acceleration. As part of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) suite, EPI-Lo was designed to investigate the physics of energetic particles; however, in the special lowest-energy "time-of-flight only" product used in this study, it also responds to solar photons in a subset of approximately sunward-looking apertures lacking special light-attenuating foils. During the first three perihelia, in a frame rotating with the Sun, PSP undergoes retrograde motion, covering a 17° heliographic longitudinal range three times during the course of the ~11-day perihelion passes, permitting a unique spatial and temporal study into the location, correlation, and persistence of previously unmeasurable SEPs. We examine the signatures of these SEPs (during the first PSP perihelion pass only) and the connection to possible solar sources using remote observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO), and the ground-based Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG). The orientation of the Sun relative to STEREO, SDO, and GONG makes such identifications challenging, but we do have several candidates, including an equatorial coronal hole at a Carrington longitude of ~335°. To analyze observations from EPI-Lo, which is a new type of particle instrument, we examine instrumental effects and provide a preliminary separation of the ion signal from the photon background.

Cassini's final phase of exploration The Cassini spacecraft spent 13 years orbiting Saturn; as it ran low on fuel, the trajectory was changed to sample regions it had not yet visited. A series of orbits close to the rings was followed by a Grand Finale orbit, which took the spacecraft through the gap between Saturn and its rings before the spacecraft was destroyed when it entered the planet's upper atmosphere. Six papers in this issue report results from these final phases of the Cassini mission. Dougherty et al. measured the magnetic field close to Saturn, which implies a complex multilayer dynamo process inside the planet. Roussos et al. detected an additional radiation belt trapped within the rings, sustained by the radioactive decay of free neutrons. Lamy et al. present plasma measurements taken as Cassini flew through regions emitting kilometric radiation, connected to the planet's aurorae. Hsu et al. determined the composition of large, solid dust particles falling from the rings into the planet, whereas Mitchell et al. investigated the smaller dust nanograins and show how they interact with the planet's upper atmosphere. Finally, Waite et al. identified molecules in the infalling material and directly measured the composition of Saturn's atmosphere. Measurements in Saturn's equatorial magnetosphere from mid-2004 through 2013 made by Cassini's charge-energy-mass ion spectrometer indicate the presence of a rare, suprathermal (83–167 keV/e) ion species at Saturn with mass ~56 amu that is likely Fe+. The abundance of Fe+ is only ~10−4 relative to that of W+ (O+, OH+, H2O+, and H3O+), the water group ions which dominate Saturn's suprathermal and thermal ions along with H+ and H2+. The radial variation of the Fe+ partial number density (PND) is distinctly different from that of W+ and most ions that comprise Saturn's suprathermal ion populations which, unlike thermal energy plasma ions, typically have a prominent PND peak at ~8–9 Rs (1 Saturn radius, Rs = 60,268 km). In contrast, the Fe+ PND decreases more or less exponentially from ~4 to ~20 Rs, our study's inner and outer limits. Fe+ may originate from metal layers produced by meteoric ablation near Saturn's mesosphere-ionosphere boundary and/or possibly impacted interplanetary dust particles or the Saturn system's dark material in the main rings.

Contrary to the permanent MeV ion belts which are relatively stable in intensity over both short and long time scales and are modulated by a single Galactic Cosmic Ray driven source, the electron belts of Saturn appear to be much more complex in both structure and temporal evolution. In order to understand the responses of this system to the different factors that may control it (internal or external/solar sources) we study its long-term, temporal evolution. We achieve that by tracking the equatorial distance of the belts׳ outer boundary, using MIMI/LEMMS energetic charged particle observations over a period of more than 7 years. This boundary is defined at the distance that a selected count rate level is measured in a LEMMS channel that has the properties of an omnidirectional, integral energy detector. Simulated solar wind moments, energetic neutral atom (ENA) observations and solar irradiance data are used to support the analysis. In many cases, correlations of the different datasets are weak, suggesting that the electron belts are modulated in time scales that are much shorter than the sampling of the electron belt boundary (typically every 10–30 days). Still, we find several cases of persistent, long term and strong perturbations in the system that appear to have corresponding disturbances in the extension of the electron belts, even on such long time scales. From the analysis of those intervals we believe that we have established a solid link with the planetary ring current as the primary source of the electron belts of Saturn. This is concluded mostly on the basis of an extended ring current decay in 2011 (inferred through ENA observations), coinciding with a similar, unusual drop in the electron belt extension (and intensity). This means that the electron belts should reflect also the modulation of the ring current. We suggest that possible sources of long term modulation are both the solar UV irradiance of the Saturnian thermosphere and the solar wind. The former appears to acquire large values and exhibit significant changes during the period of the electron belt/ring current decay, while an approximate 2-week periodicity (characteristic for the case of two solar wind streams per solar rotation) appears in the electron belts in the form of recurrent expansions or intensifications. The latter finding indicates that external forcing by the solar wind can have a considerable impact on the planet׳s electron belts, contrary to the expectations that Saturn׳s magnetospheric dynamics are rotationally dominated and internally driven.

The Cassini orbiter has observed the magnetosphere of Saturn in situ from July 2004 to the present. The spacecraft has visited nearly all local times and a large range of latitudes, including both northern and southern hemispheres, for a large fraction of a Saturn year (=29 Earth years). Local time asymmetries have been observed in the thermal plasma, the energetic particles, energetic neutral atoms, magnetic fields and aurora. Some of these are dawn-to-dusk asymmetries and have Earth-like analogies. Unlike Earth’s magnetosphere, however, Saturn’s magnetosphere is rotationally dominated, has no observable tilt relative to the spin axis, and has a major internal plasma and neutrals source in the icy moon Enceladus. These factors contribute to a number of local time asymmetries that are not dawn-to-dusk. This paper reviews Saturn’s local time asymmetries in charged particles, magnetic fields, and energetic neutral atoms, showing how some are Earth-like and some are not.

For more than five decades, the shape and interactions of the heliosphere with the local interstellar medium have been discussed in the context of two competing models, posited in 19611: a magnetosphere-like heliotail and a more symmetric bubble shape. Although past models broadly assumed the magnetosphere-like concept, the accurate heliospheric configuration remained largely undetermined due to lack of measurements. In recent years, however, Voyagers 1 and 2 (V1 and V2) crossed the termination shock — the boundary where the solar wind drops — north and south of the ecliptic plane at 94 au2,3 and 84 au4 in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and discovered the reservoir of ions and electrons that constitute the heliosheath, while Cassini remotely imaged the heliosphere5 for the first time in 2003. Here we report 5.2–55 keV energetic neutral atom (ENA) global images of the heliosphere obtained with the Cassini/Ion and Neutral Camera (INCA). We compare them with 28–53 keV ions measured within the heliosheath by the low-energy charged particle (LECP) experiment onboard V1 and V2 over an 11-year period (2003–2014). We show that the heliosheath ions are the source of ENA. These observations also demonstrate that the heliosphere responds promptly, within ~2–3 years, to outward propagating solar wind changes in both the nose and tail directions. These results, together with the V1 measurement of a ~0.5 nT interstellar magnetic field6 and the enhanced ratio between particle pressure and magnetic pressure in the heliosheath7, strongly suggest a diamagnetic bubble-like heliosphere with few substantial tail-like features. Our results are consistent with recent modelling8–11. The authors put together measurements of ions and neutral atoms from Cassini and the two Voyagers and find that the heliosphere responds quickly (with a lag of 2–3 years) to the solar cycle and that it is bubble-shaped and not tail-shaped, as usually schematized.

The kappa distribution function has become an essential form for analyzing trapped distributions of charged particles in space. It is loosely based on the Maxwellian distribution and can be thought of as a generalization of it, specifically with the capacity to describe higher fluxes at high energy, i.e., exhibiting a power law tail at the highest energies that roll over at lower energies to become Maxwellian at the lowest energies. Given that the charged particle populations themselves can have many different kinds of sources (solar wind, atmosphere, volcanic moons, etc.) and sinks (collisions with ambient neutrals or moon or ring surfaces, reconnection, etc.) and move under the influence of strong and dynamic planetary magnetic fields, it is advantageous to have a function flexible enough to capture the essential properties of entire particle distributions, e.g., plasma ( 5 keV). However, some distributions are well modeled by combinations (or modifications) of kappa distributions, since the most accurate quantitative characterizations often need even more flexibility than afforded by the standard kappa function. In this chapter we will review the use of kappa distributions to describe charged particles in the magnetospheres of the gas giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) and the inner planets (Earth and Mercury) that have allowed the determination of physical quantities of the plasma and energetic particle spectra such as temperatures, densities, pressures, spectral indices, and convection bulk velocities for one or more species, as available. These are critical quantities for understanding the structure and dynamics of magnetospheres. The dependence of these quantities on spatial and magnetic field parameters has rendered the kappa distribution a powerful diagnostic tool for understanding processes in space plasma physics. We also consider the degree to which the kappa distribution succeeds or fails to characterize planetary particle distributions under different conditions.

Planetary magnetospheres contain two general classes of charged particles: low energy “thermal” particles (generally E 10 keV), variously called superthermal or “energetic” particles, which are described by a power law distribution. The kappa or κ function combines aspects of both Maxwellian and power law forms to provide a reasonably complete description of the particle distribution from low to high energies. Fits of the data to the kappa distribution can reveal particle density, temperature, pressure, and convection velocity, all of which are key parameters of magnetospheric physics. This paper summarizes the use of the kappa distribution and its variants to investigate the plasma properties of the magnetospheres of the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. While the κ function was used to derive convective motions in previous investigations, temperatures, and pressures at Jupiter and Saturn, it was not an optimum fit for hot plasmas at Uranus and Neptune, and in many instances may not be the optimum representation of magnetospheric plasmas.

Water group ions W+ (O+, OH+, H2O+, and H3O+), along with H+ and H2+, dominate Saturn's near-equatorial magnetospheric suprathermal ion populations. The singly charged, minor heavy ions O2+ and 28M+ were also observed in the suprathermal energy range, but at much lower densities, having ≤10−2 the abundance of W+. From 2004 through 2013, Cassini's charge-energy-mass ion spectrometer has measured suprathermal 83–167 keV/e heavy ions at ~4–20 Rs (1 Saturn radius, Rs = 60,268 km). Christon et al. (2013) found apparent O2+/W+ transient and seasonal responses to variable insolation of Saturn's ring atmosphere prior to mid-2012. A similar seasonal variation in 28M+/W+ (28M+ ~27–30 amu/e molecular minor ions) was suggested but inconclusive. Now with data from mid-2012 through 2013, we find that both O2+ and 28M+ clearly exhibit seasonal recoveries from mid-2012 onward. Prominent radial partial number density peaks at ~9 Rs identify W+, O2+, and 28M+ as clear ring current participants. It is presently unclear which part of Saturn's magnetosphere produces the seasonally varying 28M+ component. Dissimilar 28M+/W+ and O2+/W+ responses to a strong late 2011 solar UV burst suggest different seasonal ring-based photolytic processes.

The recently established presence of a convective electric field in Saturn’s inner and middle magnetosphere, with an average pointing approximately towards midnight and an intensity less than 1 mV/m, is one of the most puzzling findings by the Cassini spacecraft. In order to better characterize the properties of this electric field, we augmented the original analysis method used to identify it ( Andriopoulou et al., 2012 ) and applied it to an extended energetic electron microsignature dataset, constructed from observations at the vicinity of four saturnian moons. We study the average characteristics of the convective pattern and additionally its temporal and spatial variations. In our updated dataset we include data from the recent Cassini orbits and also microsignatures from the two moons, Rhea and Enceladus, allowing us to further extend this analysis to cover a greater time period as well as larger radial distances within the saturnian magnetosphere. When data from the larger radial range and more recent orbits are included, we find that the originally inferred electric field pattern persists, and in fact penetrates at least as far in as the orbit of Enceladus, a region of particular interest due to the plasma loading that takes place there. We perform our electric field calculations by setting the orientation of the electric field as a free, time-dependent parameter, removing the pointing constraints from previous works. Analytical but also numerical techniques have been employed, that help us overcome possible errors that could have been introduced from simplified assumptions used previously. We find that the average electric field pointing is not directed exactly at midnight, as we initially assumed, but is found to be stably displaced by approximately 12–32° from midnight, towards dawn. The fact, however, that the field’s pointing is much more variable in short time scales, in addition to our observations that it penetrates inside the orbit of Enceladus ( ∼ 4 R s ), may suggest that the convective pattern is dominating all the way down to the main rings ( 2.2 R s ), when data from the Saturn Orbit Insertion are factored in. We also report changes of the electric field strength and pointing over the course of time, possibly related to seasonal effects, with the largest changes occurring during a period that envelopes the saturnian equinox. Finally, the average electric field strength seems to be sensitive to radial distance, exhibiting a drop as we move further out in the magnetosphere, confirming earlier results. This drop-off, however, appears to be more intense in the earlier years of the mission. Between 2010 and 2012 the electric field is quasi-uniform, at least between the L-shells of Tethys and Dione. These new findings provide constraints in the possible electric field sources that might be causing such a convection pattern that has not been observed before in other planetary magnetospheres. The very well defined values of the field’s average properties may suggest a periodic variation of the convective pattern, which can average out very effectively the much larger changes in both pointing and intensity over short time scales, although this period cannot be defined. The slight evidence of changes in the properties across the equinox (seasonal control), may also hint that the source of the electric field resides in the planet’s atmosphere/ionosphere system.
