We describe explicit birational maps from some rational complete intersections of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$ to some prime Fano manifolds together with their Sarkisov decomposition via a single Secant Flop, allowing us to recover the cohomologically associated Castelnuovo surface of general type with $K^2=2$ and $\chi=4$ (the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified along the discriminant curve of the net of quadrics defining the complete intersection) as the minimal model of the non ruled irreducible component of the base locus of the inverse maps. In passing we also revisit and reformulate the results in [arXiv:1706.01371] about the existence of infinitely many loci of rational complete intersection of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$ to produce explicitly some of these loci of low codimension together with many other irreducible unirational components of the Noether--Lefschetz locus., Comment: 38 pages, 4 tables

We present some applications of the Macaulay2 software package SpecialFanoFourfolds, a package for working with Hodge-special cubic fourfolds and Hodge-special Gushel--Mukai fourfolds. In particular, we show how to construct new examples of such fourfolds, some of which turn out to be rational. We also describe how to calculate K3 surfaces associated with cubic or Gushel-Mukai fourfolds, which relies on an explicit unirationality of some moduli spaces of K3 surfaces.

We provide methods to construct explicit examples of $K3$ surfaces. This leads to unirational constructions of Noether--Lefschetz divisors inside the moduli space of $K3$ surfaces of genus $g$. We implement Mukai's unirationality construction of the moduli spaces of $K3$ surfaces of genus $g\in\{6,\dots, 10, 12\}$, and we also present a new constructive proof of the unirationality of the moduli space of $K3$ surfaces of genus $11$. The object of this note is the moduli spaces of cubic fourfolds (resp., Gushel-Mukai fourfolds) which contain some special rational surfaces. Under some hypotheses on the families of such surfaces, we develop a general method to show the unirationality of the moduli spaces of the $n$-pointed such fourfolds. We apply this to some codimension 1 loci of cubic fourfolds (resp., Gushel-Mukai fourfolds) appeared in the literature recently., Comment: 14 pages, improved results

We give explicit descriptions of some Noether-Lefschetz divisors in the moduli space of Gushel-Mukai fourfolds. We provide a new construction of rationality for cubic fourfolds via Mori's theory and the minimal model program. As an application, we present the solution of the Kuznetsov's conjecture for $d=42$ (the first open case). Our methods also show an explicit connection between the rationality of cubic fourfolds belonging to the first four admissible families $\mathcal C_d$, with $d=14,26,38$, and $42$ and some birational models of minimal K3 surfaces of degree $d$ contained in well known rational Fano fourfolds., Comment: New section on the explicit detection of the associated K3 surface. Recent results of Hassett, Kuznetsov and others pointed out countably many divisors $C_d$ in the open subset of $\mathbb{P}^{55}=\mathbb{P}(H^0(\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^5}(3)))$ parametrizing all cubic 4-folds and lead to the conjecture that the cubics corresponding to these divisors should be precisely the rational ones. Rationality has been proved by Fano for the first divisor $C_{14}$ and in [arXiv:1707.00999] for the divisors $C_{26}$ and $C_{38}$. We present a general construction of hypersurfaces with vanishing hessian, starting from any irreducible non-degenerate variety whose dual variety is a hypersurface and based on the so called Dual Cayley Trick. The geometrical properties of these hypersurfaces are different from the known series constructed until now. The works of Hassett and Kuznetsov identify countably many divisors $C_d$ in the open subset of $\mathbb{P}^{55}=\mathbb{P}(H^0(\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^5}(3)))$ parametrizing all cubic 4-folds and conjecture that the cubics corresponding to these divisors are precisely the rational ones. Rationality has been known classically for the first family $C_{14}$. A tensor $T$, in a given tensor space, is said to be $h$-identifiable if it admits a unique decomposition as a sum of $h$ rank one tensors. A criterion for $h$-identifiability is called effective if it is satisfied in a dense, open subset of the set of rank $h$ tensors. In this paper we give effective $h$-identifiability criteria for a large class of tensors. We then improve these criteria for some symmetric tensors. For instance, this allows us to give a complete set of effective identifiability criteria for ternary quintic polynomial. The Macaulay2 package Cremona performs some computations on rational and birational maps between irreducible projective varieties. For instance, it provides methods to compute degrees and projective degrees of rational maps without any theoretical limitation, from which is derived a general method to compute the push-forward to projective space of Segre classes. Moreover, the computations can be done both deterministically and probabilistically. A famous result of B. Crauder and S. Katz (1989) concerns the classification of special Cremona transformations whose base locus has dimension at most two. Furthermore, they also proved that a special Cremona transformation with base locus of dimension three has to be one of the following: 1) a quinto-quintic transformation of $\mathbb{P}^5$; 2) a cubo-quintic transformation of $\mathbb{P}^6$; or 3) a quadro-quintic transformation of $\mathbb{P}^8$. Special Cremona transformations as in case 1) have been classified by L. Ein and N. Shepherd-Barron (1989), while in our previous work (2013), we classified special quadro-quintic Cremona transformations of $\mathbb{P}^8$. The main aim here is to consider the problem of classifying special cubo-quintic Cremona transformations of $\mathbb{P}^6$, concluding the classification of special Cremona transformations whose base locus has dimension three., Comment: Added an explicit example that makes the classification effective. In this paper we investigate the divisor $\mathcal C_{14}$ inside the moduli space of smooth cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb P^5$, whose generic element is a smooth cubic containing a smooth quartic scroll. Using the fact that all degenerations of quartic scrolls in $\mathbb P^5$ contained in a smooth cubic hypersurface are surfaces with one apparent double point, we conclude that every cubic hypersurface belonging to $\mathcal C_{14}$ is rational. As an application of our results and of the construction of some explicit examples contained in the Appendix, we also prove that the Pfaffian locus is not open in $\mathcal C_{14}$., Comment: 24 pages.
