This paper explores company design of a formal work process for non-assembled products, using a survey mode of inquiry with a follow-up questionnaire in an interactive dialogue with selected case-companies. The preliminary findings suggest that in the development or reconfiguration of company product innovation work processes in the process industries, it is advisable to design a work process that is adapted to inherent and contextual process-industrial conditions. It is further indicated that such a product innovation work process requires greater product and process integration from ideation to product launch and increased focus on the industrialization phase. The proposed novel five-phase structural model presented in a Stage-Gate format, can be deployed as a guiding template in company development or reconfiguration of an enhanced product innovation work process for the development of non-assembled products.

Traditionellt sett är en linjär produktutvecklingsprocess det självklara valet, däremot med den teknikutveckling som skett och fortsätter att utvecklas i samhället arbetar många företag mot ett mer agilt arbetssätt. Val av produktutvecklingsprocess har en direkt påverkan på organisationens innovationsförmåga. Valet är mycket viktigt vid projekt vars mål är att ta fram något nytt som uppfyller kundens behov eller önskemål, samt för företag som vill hålla sig konkurrenskraftiga på marknaden. Syftet med detta kandidatexamensarbete är att undersöka hur företag använder sig av olika produktutvecklingsprocesser samt om en kombination av agila och linjära processer är gynnsam. Arbetet undersöker studiens frågeställningar som tar upp hur och när agila samt linjära processeranvänds. När och hur kombineras de två processerna och bakgrunden till en eventuell kombination utav dessa. Undersöka när är den ena, den andra eller kombinationen av båda processerna är mest fördelaktigt. Samt vilka för- och nackdelar processerna har, även vilken korrelation processerna har när det kommer till främjande av innovationsgrad. Arbetet inleddes med en litteraturstudie inom de olika områdena; innovation, linjära processer, agila processer samt en möjlig kombination av dessa. Efter litteraturstudien genomfördes en empirisk studie av två företag med tre respondenter från vardera. Detta gjordes i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer. Respondenterna hade olika roller på företagen, men samtliga innefattande arbetsuppgifter berörde produktutvecklingsprocesser. Resultatet från intervjuerna har sedan analyserats och diskuterats och presenterats i en slutsats. Från den genomförda studien kan konklusionen dras att de undersökta företagen till den större delen av projekt använder sig av egna processer som i grunden är likt den traditionella Stage-Gateprocessen, men med en mer flexibel process liknande agilt vid uppstarten av projekt. The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to investigate how companies use different product development processes, and if a combination of linear or agile processes are favorable. The thesis investigates when and how agile and linear processes are used. When and how the two processes are combined, and the reason for a potential combination. To investigate when one or the other or the combination of the two processes are most favorable. As well as which pros and cons the processes have, in correlation to the promotion of the degree of innovation. The study began with a literature study in the different areas; innovation, linear processes, agile processes and a possible combination of agile and linear processes. Then, an empirical study of two companies took place, with three respondents from each company. This study was conducted via semi-structured interviews. The respondents had different roles at the company, but all were within the field of product development processes. The result from the interviews was analyzed and discussed and, finally, presented in a conclusion. From the completed study, the conclusion can be drawn that the surveyed companies for most projects use their own processes that are like the traditional Stage-Gate process, but with a more flexible process like agile at the start of projects. Bakgrund: En stor del av Sveriges företag är idag små företag och allt fler kunder efterfrågar hållbara innovationer. Dock saknas det forskning gällande just småföretag och hållbarhet inom ny produktutveckling (NPD). Därmed fokuserar denna studie på hur små företag kan utveckla hållbara innovationer och vilka framgångsfaktorer och hinder som de finns genom NPD-processen. Syfte: Syftet är att identifiera framgångsfaktorer och hinder för att små företag ska lyckas utveckla en hållbar innovation. Avgränsning: Begreppet "innovation" avser produktinnovationer på den befintliga marknaden. Termen "hållbarhet" är avgränsad till miljömässig hållbarhet. Den hållbara innovationen betraktas vidare genom NPD. Studien är avgränsad till små företag. Metod: Studien utgår från två olika perspektiv, ett kund- och ett företagsperspektiv. Kundperspektivet undersöks genom en kvantitativ enkätmetodik och företagsperspektivet undersöks genom en kvalitativ intervjumetodik. Studien är vidare baserad på en explorativ fallstudie som genomförts genom ett abduktivt angreppssätt. Resultat och Slutsats: Studiens resultat och slutsats visar att framgångsfaktorerna när små företag utvecklar hållbara innovationer är kundinvolvering, hållbara produktattribut, transparent arbete och organisatorisk struktur och integration. This paper replies to the call for more agile-stage-gate hybrid methods in the context of physical innovations. By showing how some of the characteristics of conventional linear stage-gate methods and of the agile approaches can be integrated, we propose and test a new form of hybrid method for the physical new product development process (NPD). Distinguishing itself from the conventional NPD methods and practices, biased towards alignments between companies and consumers as the key to market success, our method focuses on the innovation potential intrinsic to misalignments. Through a qualitative research applied in an existing European consortium of innovators, the present work guides companies in the systematic identification and exploration of misalignments between their designers and users. By identifying misalignments at specific level of the NPD process, our method provides companies with a deep analytical insight into how, where and why (mis)alignments between their designers' decisions and users’ demands might occur. Our method revealed to be a strategic learning and reflection tool to support companies in the proactive management of the identified misalignments, as informative, beneficial and inspirational aspects of the NPD process.

[ES] El presente documento abarca la realización de dos proyectos de mejora en la rotación de los productos de una marca de grupo Danone. Para ello, en primer lugar se realizará un estudio de capacidad y viabilidad técnica de la fábrica, para conocer el potencial de las instalaciones existentes. A partir de aquí, y gracias a un estudio de mercado realizado, se propondrán diferentes alternativas, con el objetivo de adaptar la gama de productos actual a las nuevas demandas de los clientes. Posteriormente, se realizará un proceso de homologación y/o validación, pasando por la realización de pruebas industriales en fábrica y adaptando las instalaciones. Dichos proyectos culminan con el lanzamiento de tres nuevos productos y su puesta en el mercado. To this end, a capacity and technical feasibility study of the plant will be carried out in order to know the potential of the existing facilities. From here, and thanks to a market study carried out, different alternatives of improvement will be proposed to increase the sales volumes, and with it the volumes of production of the brand. Subsequently, a process of approval and/or validation of the new products will be carried out, through the performance of industrial tests in the factory and adapting the existing facilities to the new requirements. Sedan etableringen 2017 har en drastisk ökning av elscootrar skett i Sverige och framförallt i Stockholms innerstad. Denna radikala förändring inom färdmedel har skakat om den rådande trafikmiljön. Olyckor och parkeringsproblematik har stått i fokus för medias rapportering kring fenomenet. Syftet med denna rapport är att undersöka hur företagen som utvecklar elscootrar arbetar med säkerhet för användarna och anpassar sin produktutveckling efter svenska lagar och trafikregler. Studien behandlar även hur man på ett säkert sätt kan integrera nya färdmedel i samhället. För att lägga en grund för arbetet har en litteraturstudie genomförts och en teoretisk referensram tagits fram. Informationsinsamlingen har skett genom kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer med tre företag som utvecklar eller hanterar elscootrar, ansvarig för elscootrar på Stockholms Stad samt respondenter från Transportstyrelsen med regeringsuppdraget Att utreda behov av förenklade regler av eldrivna enpersonsfordon. Intervjuerna har transkriberats, kodats, delats upp i teman och analyserats. Idag är de flesta elscootrar som finns i Stockholm klassificerade som cyklar. Detta innebär utöver krav på bland annat broms och ringklocka att maxhastigheten ej får överstiga 20 km/h och motoreffekten max får vara 250 W. Flera aktörer ser en problematik i detta och en gemensam önskan hos alla respondenter är att hitta en klassificering som ger tydlighet för vad som gäller, reder ut oklarheter och främjar utvecklingen av färdmedlet. Resultatet av studien har visat att ett stort fokus ligger på säkerhet i utvecklingsprocessen och en stor del av arbetet med säkerheten sker i utvärderingsfasen. Utvecklingen sker inkrementellt för att ständigt förbättra säkerheten hos elscootrarna och förhindra att olyckor sker. Idag arbetar företag med en mer linjär process men för att hantera framtida utmaningar skulle en mer agil process kunna främja produktutvecklingen. Då att fenomenet med elscootrar fortfarande är nytt så är ol, Since its establishment in 2017, there has been a dramatic increase of e-scooters in Sweden and especially in Stockholm city. This radical change in transport has shaken the current traffic environment. Accidents and parking problems have been the focus of media reporting of the phenomenon. The purpose of this report is to investigate how the companies that develop e-scooters work with safety for the users and adapt their product development to Swedish laws and traffic rules. The study also deals with how to safely integrate new means of transport into society. In order to lay a foundation, a literature study has been conducted and a theoretical frame of reference has been developed. Information was gathered through qualitative semi-structured interviews with three companies that develop e-scooters, responsible for e-scooters in Stockholms Stad and respondents from the Swedish Transport Agency with a government assignment to clarify the situation. The interviews have been transcribed, coded, subdivided into themes and analyzed. Today, most e-scooters in Stockholm are classified as bicycles. This means, in addition to requirements for brake and bell, that the speed must not exceed 20 km/h and the engine power must be no more than 250 W. Several affecting parties consider this classification problematic and a common wish among all interviewed respondents is to find a classification or approach to the e-scooters that gives clarity for which rules that applies, clarifies ambiguities and promotes future development of the e-scooters. The results of the study have shown that a large focus in the development process is on safety and a large part of the work to enhance safety takes place during the evaluation phase. The development is incremental in order to constantly improve the safety for the users of the e-scooters and prevent accidents from happening. I produktutvecklingen förlitar man sig ofta på processer för att driva igenom lyckade projekt, inte minst i företag av större karaktär. En traditionell process som än idag är dominerande i många stora företag är Stage-Gate. Processen är av linjär karaktär och anses vara väldigt effektiv. En uppkommande process med syfte att främja kreativitet är Design Thinking. Processen är iterativ och sätter användaren i fokus. Syftet med detta kandidatexamensarbete är att undersöka hur man i produktutvecklingen hos större etablerade företag kombinerar de två olika processerna Design Thinking och Stage-Gate. Arbetet undersöker kombinationen av en mer iterativ process som Design Thinking och en linjär och mer traditionell Stage-Gate-process och tar reda i vilken mån dessa processer används samt när och varför de används. Arbetet ska också undersöka ifall det finns någon pågående utveckling av processer och i så fall vad en sådan utveckling baseras på. Rapporten grundar sig i en litteraturstudie för att skapa en förståelse om nuvarande kunskapsläge samt undersöka olika synsätt i ämnet. Arbetet bygger också på en empirisk studie av två stora företag i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer. Respondenterna på företagen arbetar aktivt med produktutvecklingsarbete och besitter kunskap om båda processerna Design Thinking och Stage-Gate. Informationen som genererats har sedan tolkats, analyserats samt diskuterats. Slutsatserna som kan dras från undersökningen är att i stora företag används till störst del en Stage-Gatead process då det är viktigt med en tydlig struktur i stora företag. Design Thinking används mest som ett komplement och i situationer då problemet inte är väldefinierat. Utveckling av befintliga processer sker löpande men då handlar det främst om finjustering, att helt byta process är inget som är relevant., In product development, companies often rely on processes to achieve successful projects, not least in companies of a larger size. A traditional process that is still dominant in many large companies today is Stage-Gate. The process is linear and is considered to be very effective. An emerging process with the goal to encourage creativity is Design Thinking. The process is iterative and puts the user in focus. The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to investigate how the product development of larger, more established companies combines the two processes Design Thinking and Stage-Gate. The thesis examines the combination of a more iterative process such as Design Thinking and a linear and more traditional Stage-Gate process and analyzes to what extent these processes are used as well as when and why. The report will also investigate if there is any ongoing development of processes and, if so, what such a development is based on. The report is grounded on a literature study to create an understanding of the current state of knowledge and to explore different perspectives within the subject. The thesis is also based on an empirical study of two large companies where semi-structured interviews are used. The respondents at the companies work with product development and have knowledge of both the Design Thinking and Stage-Gate processes. The information generated has then been interpreted, analyzed and discussed. The conclusions that can be drawn from the study are that in large companies a Stage-Gated process is used to a large extent, since it is important to have a clear structure in large companies. Design Thinking is mostly used as a complement and in situations where the problem is not well defined. Development of existing processes is ongoing, but is mainly about fine-tuning, to completely change the process is not relevant.

Product development has become essential in today’s technology driven marketplace. Currently, pointbased models such as the stage-gate model are applied in practice of several incumbent firms in the automotive industry. However, stage-gate models have been criticized for being too linear and plan focused as external pressures and internal complexity demand for faster and more flexible development, such as agile development. Although product development has a central role in the success of a firm, suppliers play a central role in helping firms achieve their product development goals. As a result, firms may undertake suppler development and integration initiatives to ensure quality and efficiency at the supplier. Utilizing supplier integration has shown positive effects on several performance outcomes. However, limited research on the effects of suppliers being integrated to deficient development practices has been published. Firms that integrate suppliers into point-based, documentation heavy processes could therefore potentially hinder internal development of flexible practices. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate how supplier integration challenges suppliers in adopting agile methods in product development and how these challenges can be addressed. This study is based a qualitative, exploratory case study approach, including 13 interviews with various stakeholders within the case company together with extensive data from observations. The empirical data in combination with theories on agile development, traditional development, and supplier integration resulted in a proposition for adopting agile development approaches for integrated suppliers being locked-in to traditional development models. The findings indicate that integrated suppliers may face challenges in adopting agile methods due to requirements from the integrating firm on using traditional development methods. However, a possibility to utilize agile practices on the microperspective whil, Produktutveckling har blivit väsentlig på dagens teknikdrivna marknadsplats. Att använda leverantörsintegration har visat positiva effekter på flera nyckeltal. Emellertid har begränsad forskning om effekterna av att integrera leverantörer i ineffektiva produktutvecklingsmetoder publicerats. Företag som integrerar leverantörer i linjära, dokumentationstunga processer kan därför potentiellt hindra den interna utvecklingen av flexibla tillvägagångssätt. Därmed är syftet med denna studie att undersöka hur leverantörsintegration kan försvåra tillämpning av agila metoder i produktutveckling för leverantörer och hur dessa utmaningar kan adresseras. Denna studie bygger på en kvalitativ, explorativ fallstudie som inkluderar 13 intervjuer med anställda inom det observerade företaget tillsammans med omfattande data från observationer. Empiriska data i kombination med teorier om agil utveckling, traditionell utveckling och leverantörsintegration resulterade i ett förslag till integrerade leverantörer, som är bundna till traditionella utvecklingsmodeller, att adoptera agila utvecklingsmetoder. Resultaten tyder på att integrerade leverantörer kan möta utmaningar när det gäller att använda agila metoder på grund av krav att använda traditionella utvecklingsmetoder från det integrerande företaget. Bakgrund: Global konkurrens och teknologisk utveckling förkortar produkters livscykler och produktutveckling blir därmed ett allt viktigare element inom organisationer. Vid utvecklingen krävs styrning för att säkerställa att de innovationer som skapas är i linje med företagets mål och strategier. Ett av de mer välanvända styrsystemen som används vid produktutveckling har kritiserats för att vara en för linjär process som exkluderar lärande från utvecklingsarbetet. Alternativa metoder har på senare tid dykt upp i både forskning och på företag för att möjliggöra en mer dynamisk utvecklingsprocess. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att identifiera hur produktutvecklingsprocessen ser ut i några svenska företag. Vidare ska studien öka förståelsen för hur produktutvecklingsprocessen styrs i dessa företag och även identifiera och analysera de hinder som finns för innovation i denna process. Metod: Detta är en deduktiv flerfallstudie där semistrukturerade intervjuer och dokument har använts för att samla in det empiriska materialet. Slutsats: Utifrån studiens resultat bekräftas en generell produktutvecklingsprocess som presenteras i studiens referensram. Dessa är konceptualisering, prototyputveckling, lansering och uppföljning. Däremot finns det tecken på att företag med agila utvecklingsmetoder inte följer denna standardiserade modell. Vidare beskrivs vilka styrverktyg som används för att styra en produktutveckling. Dessa har kategoriserats efter Malmi och Browns styrpaket. I slutsatsens tredje och sista punkt presenteras hinder mot innovation som har identifierats i produktutvecklingsprocessen. Ett tydligt hinder som har identifierats är att Stage-Gate och kvalitetssäkring bromsar innovation efter tidiga stadier i processen. Ytterligare ett tydligt hinder är att ett fokus på att förkorta “time-to-market” kan göra att vissa innovationer inte hinner inkluderas i produkten., Background: Global competition and technological advancements have shortened the product life cycle of countless products worldwide. Product development is therefore becoming an increasingly important element in organizations. In the process of product development, management control is required to ensure that new innovation follows the strategy and goals of the organization. The Stage-Gate system is a well-used new product development model that has been criticized for being too rigid and hinders learning in the development process. As of recent years, alternative methods have appeared in studies and in businesses in order to enable a more dynamic process. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the different stages of a product development process at a number of Swedish firms. This study also aims to increase the understanding of how the product development process is being managed in these companies as well as to identify and analyze factors that can hinder innovation in the new product development process. Method: This is a deductive case study with a multiple-case design. Semi-structured interviews and documents have been used for the collection of empirical data. Conclusion: The results of this study settles a general development process as presented in the study’s theory chapter. The development process includes the following phases: concept development, prototype development, market introduction and follow-up. However, there are implications that show that companies who use an agile development model do not follow the aforementioned development process. This study also concludes the elements of a management control system that is used in the product development process at Swedish companies. These elements are categorized by the management control systems package of Malmi and Brown. Lastly, challenges to include innovations to the product is being identified.
