This thesis uses visual culture to build a more nuanced understanding of the experiences of ordinary women in Late Antiquity and the impact of gender on their everyday lives. While much scholarship has examined women and gender in this period through literary sources, such texts provide almost exclusively elite male perspectives. In this thesis, I instead centre the representation of normal women in visual culture, from their donor portraits and funerary images to depictions on jewellery and graffiti. Analysis of this underexplored evidence allows me to undertake new evaluations of key themes such as education and family life, and to examine previously unrecognised aspects of women’s experience. Throughout the thesis I integrate diverse textual sources into my analysis, from literary and legal texts to documentary papyri, inscriptions, and letters, where possible highlighting texts composed by women. By taking such an holistic approach I am able to demonstrate how attention to material and visual culture can corroborate, challenge, and complicate traditional textual histories. The thesis is divided into an introduction, conclusion, and four main body chapters which examine the cultivation of beauty through the toilet, the popularity of depicting women as learned, the vicissitudes of female experience through the life course, and opportunities for women to engage with their communities as donors. Through these analyses I show that ordinary women were involved in late antique society to a far greater degree than is allowed for in texts, from changes in urban life and elite display to new forms of civic patronage. Christianity emerges repeatedly as a factor driving change in women’s intellectual and public lives, as do transformations in governance and administration. At other times a marked continuity with earlier centuries is demonstrated where we would expect significant change, such as in the roles of widows and virgins. I also question several of the methods we use to study ancient lives, in particular with regard to definitions of education and learnedness, arguing for greater flexibility in order to adequately study women and non-elite groups. My thesis also demonstrates the importance of women’s homosocial relationships, both in informal social situations and the more formal segregation of the monastery.

Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. BACKGROUND The coronary collateral circulation is a preformed network of anastomotic connections acting as a "natural bypass" mechanism. Whilst the prevalence of collaterals varies between species, approximately 25% of patients have angiographically visible robust collaterals at the time of ST elevation myocardial infarction. While the presence of collaterals is associated with improved outcomes, the magnitude of myocardial perfusion which can be provided by the collateral circulation remains uncertain. PURPOSE The aim was to quantify collateral myocardial perfusion during experimental coronary balloon occlusion in patients with CAD. METHODS The study was approved by the local investigational review board, and all patients provided informed consent. Patients without prior infarction, bypass surgery, or angiographically visible collaterals undergoing elective percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) to a single epicardial vessel, underwent two scans with 99mTc-sestamibi myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). All subjects underwent at least three minutes of angiographically verified complete balloon occlusion, at which time an intravenous injection of the radiotracer was administered, followed by SPECT imaging. A second radiotracer injection followed by SPECT imaging was performed 24 hours after PTCA. RESULTS The study included 21 patients (median [interquartile range] age 70 [56-74] years, 52% male). The degree of diameter stenosis of treated vessels ranged from 60-99%, with successful PTCA performed with a mean 5-minute balloon occlusion time, resulting in ≤20% residual stenosis in all cases. The vessels undergoing PTCA were 6 in the LAD, 5 in the LCx, and 10 in the RCA. For the cohort, the size of the perfusion defect was 16 [8-30]% of the LV and the collateral perfusion at rest within the perfusion defect was 64 [58-68]% of normal perfusion within that region. OBJECTIVES: Perturbation of the choriodecidual space before the onset of spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) could lead to a concomitant rise in both cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) cytokine and fetal fibronectin (FFN), and assessing the concentrations of both markers could improve the prediction of sPTB (delivery before 37 completed weeks of gestation). Therefore, we prospectively determined mid-trimester changes in CVF cytokine and FFN concentrations, and their predictive capacity for sPTB in asymptomatic pregnant women. STUDY DESIGN: CVF collected at 20+0-22+6 weeks (n = 47: Preterm-delivered = 22, Term-delivered = 25) and 26+0-28+6 weeks (n = 50: Preterm-delivered = 17, Term-delivered = 33) from 63 asymptomatic pregnant women at risk of sPTB were examined. Cytokine and FFN concentrations were determined by multiplexed bead-based immunoassay and 10Q Rapid analysis (Hologic, MA, USA) respectively. The 20+0-22+6/26+0-28+6 weeks ratios of cytokines and FFN concentrations were compared between preterm- and term-delivered women using Receiver Operating Characteristics curves to predict sPTB. Also, bacterial 16S rDNA from 64 samples (20+0-22+6 weeks n = 36, 26+0-28+6 weeks n = 28) was amplified by polymerase chain reaction to determine associations between vaginal microflora, cytokine and FFN concentrations. RESULTS: Changes in RANTES and IL-1β concentrations between 20+0-22+6 and 26+0-28+6 weeks, expressed as a ratios, were predictive of sPTB, RANTES (AUC = 0.82, CI = 0.62-0.94) more so than IL-1β (AUC = 0.71, CI = 0.53-0.85) and FFN (not predictive). Combining these markers (AUC = 0.83, CI = 0.63-0.95) showed similar predictive capacity as RANTES alone. FFN concentrations at 26+0-28+6 weeks correlated with IL-1β (r = 0.4, P = 0.002) and RANTES (r = 0.3, P = 0.03). In addition, there was increased prevalence of vaginal anaerobes including Bacteroides, Fusobacterium and Mobiluncus between gestational time points in women who experienced sPTB compared to the term women (P = 0.0006). CONCLUSIONS: CVF RANTES and IL-1β in mid-trimester of pregnancy correlate with quantitative FFN. The levels of CVF RANTES and IL-1β decline significantly in women who deliver at term unlike women who deliver preterm. This observation suggests that sPTB may be characterised by sustained choriodecidual inflammation and may have clinical value in serial screening for sPTB if confirmed by larger studies.
