4. Switching costs in competitive health insurance markets : the role of insurer's pricing strategies

Abstract

Our article deals with pricing strategies in Swiss health insurance markets and focuses on the relationship between basic and supplementary insurance. We analyzed how firms’ pricing strategies (i.e., pricing of basic and supplementary products) can create switching costs in basic health insurance markets, thereby preventing competition in basic insurance from working properly. More specifically, using unique market and survey data, we investigated whether firms use bundling strategies or supplementary products as low-price products to attract and retain basic insurance consumers. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to analyze these pricing strategies in the context of insurance/health insurance. We found no evidence of bundling in the Swiss setting. We did however observe that firms used low-price supplementary products that contributed to lock in consumers. A majority of firms offered at least one of such product at a low price. None offered low-price products in both basic and supplementary markets. Low-price insurance products differed across firms. When buying a lowprice supplementary product, consumers always bought their basic contract from the same firm. Furthermore, those who opted for low-price supplementary products were less likely to declare an intention to switch basic insurance firms in the near future. This result was true for all risk category levels.

Abstract

Several electron microscopy techniques have followed the growth of CoC2O4.H2O particles during aqueous precipitation. The use of techniques with particle systems where the final precipitate appearance may hide particle substructures could help elucidate growth mechanisms and allow better control of nanostructured materials for a number of applications.

18. Bending of dislocations in GaN during epitaxial lateral overgrowth

Abstract

Bending of dislocations in GaN during epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) has been experimentally studied using transmission electron microscopy. The orientational dependence of the dislocation energy factor K has been calculated on the basis of anisotropic elasticity theory for different types of perfect dislocation in GaN. Image forces act on dislocations during the growth and dislocations bend to achieve the minimum energy. Bending behavior depends on a dislocation type and we show that the measured bending angles correspond to the calculated energy minima. The results allow us to quantitatively discuss the most advantageous ELO GaN mask direction for the largest dislocation density reduction.

Abstract

We report on measurements of the plasmon losses of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes by electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The experimental data are compared to simulated excitation probabilities calculated using the hydrodynamic theory of the interaction between a probe electron and a two-dimensional quasifree electron gas confined on a cylindrical shell. Depending on the nanotube geometry, the first- or the second-order oscillation mode dominates the loss spectrum. The resonance energy of the dominant resonance mode is found to depend on the radius of the nanotube. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. A study of the structure of Lomer and 60° dislocations in aluminium using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy

Abstract

The structure of asymmetric [110] tilt boundaries developed during creep of pure aluminium single crystals is studied using high-resolution electron microscopy. The small- and moderate-misorientation boundaries are composed of Lomer and 60° dislocations. Extensive image simulation is used to deduce the detailed core structures of these two dislocations. Comparisons with calculated elastic displacements indicate that the Lomer dislocation is not detectably dissociated in its (001) glide plane, or into the sessile Lomer-Cottrell configuration. The agreement between the observed atomic column positions and continuum elasticity is excellent, except for the innermost positions near the core of the Lomer dislocation. The core structure of these discrete Lomer dislocations also correlates well with previous atomistic calculations for a larger-misorientation Σ = 19 boundary. A similar analysis of the displacements around 60° dislocations using isotropic elasticity indicates a slight dissociation of about 0.55 ± 0.15nm on the {111}. The lateral migration of boundaries in the thin transmission electron microscopy foils is also observed to occur by the motion of 60° dislocations within the boundary plane via a reversible Lomer reaction. The observation of an alternate core structure for the Lomer dislocation during this migration process is explained by the presence of a kink along the dislocation line. Multislice image simulations in which the structure varies with depth are used to study the effects of kinks and dislocation inclination on core structure images in thin foils. The implications of these observations in terms of dislocation glide on (001) in aluminium, are discussed.

50. Biexciton emission and crystalline quality of ZnO nano-objects

Abstract

The design of cost-effective standards for the quality of nano-objects is currently a key issue toward their massive use for optoelectronic applications. The observation by photoluminescence of narrow excitonic and biexcitonic emission lines in semiconductor nanowires is usually accepted as evidence for high structural quality. Here, we perform time-resolved cathodoluminescence experiments on isolated ZnO nanobelts grown by chemical vapor deposition. We observe narrow emission lines at low temperature, together with a clear biexciton line. Still, drastic alterations in both the CL intensity and lifetime are observed locally along the nano-object. We attribute these to non-radiative recombinations at edge dislocations, closing basal plane stacking faults, inhomogeneously distributed along the NB length. This leads us to the conclusion that the observation of narrow excitonic and biexcitonic emission lines is far from sufficient to grade the quality of a nano-object.
