Several specialized collections of COVID-19 literature have been developed during the global health emergency. These include the WHO COVID-19 Global Literature Database, Cochrane COVID-19 Study Register, CAMARADES COVID-19 SOLES, Epistemonikos' COVID-19 L-OVE, and LitCovid. Our objective was to evaluate the completeness of these collections and to measure the time from when COVID-19 articles are posted to when they appear in the collections.We tested each selected collection for the presence of 440 included studies from 25 COVID-19 systematic reviews. We sampled 112 journals and prospectively monitored their websites until a new COVID-19 article appeared. We then monitored for 2 weeks to see when the new articles appeared in each collection. PubMed served as a comparator.Every collection provided at least one record not found in PubMed. Four records (1%) were not in any of the sources studied. Collections contained between 83% and 93% of the primary studies with the WHO database being the most complete. By 2 weeks, between 60% and 78% of tracked articles had appeared.Our findings support the use of the best performing COVID-19 collections by systematic reviews to replace paywalled databases.

New mothers have unique health information needs and behaviors. They may be overwhelmed or feel pressure from family, society, and self. At any time they may have only one hand free to scroll through a webpage. New mothers may be adept at navigating the Internet and using technology, and they may prefer mobile-friendly sites and apps. Mothers need reliable health information from professionals and experiential knowledge from other mothers. They need information to face the day-to-day challenges and to feel like part of a community. This webliography is a guide to online resources, including websites, blogs, and support groups, which provide new mothers with information on newborn care.

Purpose This paper aims to describe how public librarians can better address complex information needs. First, librarians should classify the degree of complexity of the need by using Warner’s classification model; then they can use Popper’s three world theory to anticipate and respond to complex information needs by following specific steps. Design/methodology/approach After examining the information science literature, appropriate models were selected to support public librarians. Our information science scholarship, coupled with our practical experience, informed our search and selection. Findings This paper details specific steps that public librarians can take to anticipate and respond to individual information needs. Doing so is imperative as the information needs of the public continue to become increasingly complex. Originality/value This paper improves information practice because it offers specific steps to aid public librarians to anticipate and respond to complex information needs. It draws upon an existing model and theoretical framework. This paper also highlights selected examples of how public librarians across the USA have anticipated information needs, and developed partnerships with organizations external to the public library to address complex information needs.

In March 2020, the Dean of the George Washington (GW) University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and the GW COVID-19 Incident Management Team asked the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Public Health to initiate a daily report that surveyed COVID-19 literature/resources. This COVID-19 Intelligence Report would serve as a concise, authoritative source of COVID-19 information for clinicians, the Incident Management Team, and operational leaders. The Senior Associate Dean established an Intelligence Gathering Team comprised of clinicians and librarians. Himmelfarb librarians facilitated the collection, distribution, and archiving of COVID-19 resources and Intelligence Reports.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to profile various types of Web-based tools to facilitate research collaboration within and across institutions. Design/methodology/approach Various Web-based tools were tested by the author. Additionally, tutorial videos and guides were reviewed. Findings There are various free and low-cost tools available to assist in the collaborative research process, and librarians are well-positioned to facilitate their usage. Practical implications Librarians and researchers will learn about various types of tools available at free or at low cost to fulfill needs of the collaborative research process. Social implications As the tools highlighted are either free or of low cost, they are also valuable to start-ups and can be recommended for entrepreneurs. Originality/value As the realm of Web-based collaborative tools continues to evolve, the options must be continually revisited and reviewed for currency.

Malaria is endemic to many countries of northern South America . There is a rich traditional use of plants to treat malaria in this region. This review focuses on species of Gentianaceae that are used in South America to treat malaria , fevers, and symptoms related to malaria . Species names used in original works are revised in accordance with contemporary knowledge of botany and distribution of these plants. Gentians from the following neotropical genera are used as antimalarials: Calolisianthus Gilg, Centaurium Hill, Chelonanthus Gilg, Coutoubea Aubl., Curtia Cham. and Schltdl., Deianira Cham. and Schltdl., Eustoma Salisb., Gentiana L., Gentianella Moench, Schultesia Mart., Tachia Aubl. and Voyria Aubl. Several gentian extracts and substances exhibit in vitro and especially in vivo antimalarial activity based on pharmacological and chemical composition studies. Water-ethyl alcohol extracts of the bark and roots of Potalia resinifera Mart., chloroform fractions of the ethyl alcohol extracts of leaves, and the methyl alcohol extracts of roots of Tachia grandiflora Maguire and Weaver inhibited Plasmodium falciparum Welch (a human malaria parasite) in vitro. In vivo antimalarial activity in rodent models has been reported for ethnopharmacologically relevant extracts of Calolisianthus speciosus (Cham. & Schltdl.) Gilg, a Chelonanthus Gilg sp. and Tachia Aubl. spp. [originally cited species: Irlbachia speciosa (Cham. and Schltdl.) Maas, I. alata (Aubl.) Maas, Tachia guianensis Aubl., respectively], and T. grandiflora. The antimalarial potential of only a few gentians from South America has been explored. Active antimalarial gentians need further study to identify their active principles and to confirm their medicinal potential.
