In this study, we examined non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma processes operating under varying conditions using different liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon materials. The light emission from the discharges were analyzed through optical emission spectroscopy to comprehend the products generated in different parameter space. The gaseous products from each of these analyses were also collected and analyzed through gas chromatography. Analysis of the optical emission from the discharge and concentration of the gaseous products show a linear trend between emission intensity ratio H α /C2 and gas concentration ratio H2/C2H x. Gas temperature and electronic excitation temperature of different experimental conditions were also compared and indicates that spark discharge relates to higher electronic excitation temperature compared to glow discharge of similar medium. Higher electronic excitation temperature leads to generation of different products from spark discharge compared to glow discharge. Glow discharge generates more of the intermediate products. Whereas spark discharge, because of its higher electronic excitation temperature, leads to higher rate of dissociation and therefore generates more of the dissociated products. Glow discharge, for example generates more of OH and H from the moisture present in the carrier gas as impurity, whereas spark discharge would generate more of H α and O particles further breaking down the OH bonds. Finally, UV–Vis analysis was performed on the liquid products of the discharge and reveals that the photo-centers and the newly generated soot nano particles absorb the UV range lights and some of the visible range light emission mostly up to ∼600 nm. Pulsed electrical discharges in a gas–liquid mixture deposit energy into both phases. Here, we propose a model to simulate breakdown in multiphase based on experimental data. Furthermore, we estimated breakdown voltage in each phase and then estimated energy deposition in each phase. Discharge in pure liquid showed a highly stochastic nature, having a wide breakdown voltage distribution, while the mean value closely follows a one term power law as a function of gap spacing. When there is external gas injection to the gap, breakdown voltage increased significantly due to charge dissipation on bubble surface. This effect was simulated to predict breakdown voltage in liquid with gas injection at different rates. A multiphase system model was developed to simulate breakdown in the gas–liquid phase. The model is a superposition of power law and Meek criteria physical models for the liquid and gas phases, respectively, with empirically derived coefficients. Energy deposition into each phase was estimated by this model. The gap spacing is the primary factor determining breakdown voltage and energy distribution. In studied conditions, we were able to predict the breakdown voltage and estimate energy deposition into different phases. When the gap and flow rate vary between 2 and 10 mm and flow rate 0–1 LPM, 50%–93% of electrical energy is deposited into the liquid. This model allows for predicting breakdown voltage in a multiphase. Furthermore, it allows for control of the energy distribution among the phases in a multiphase pulsed discharge system. We showed that nonthermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma compromises the integrity of the cell membrane of Deinococcus radiodurans, an extremophile organism. In samples of D. radiodurans, which were dried in a laminar flow hood, we observe that DBD plasma exposure resulted in a six-log reduction in CFU (colony-forming unit) count after 30 min of treatment. When the Deinococcus radiodurans cells were suspended in distilled water and treated, it took only 15 s to achieve a four-log reduction of CFU count. Several variations of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) have been developed for nondamaging living-tissue sterilization and blood coagulation. This so-called floating electrode DBD (FE-DBD) has been shown by histology to not damage the treated tissue. Nevertheless, preliminary experiments show that a person who touches the FE-DBD can feel the discharge action. Some of these unpleasant sensations are related to the thermal effects of the plasma. These thermal effects and other important parameters of the discharge are strongly dependent on the electrical properties of the discharge, i.e., driving voltage and waveform shape. In this paper, we first employed sinusoidal driving waveform for medical applications. After that, in order to increase the uniformity and decrease the temperature, we employed a microsecond-pulsed waveform system with a few microsecond pulse durations. Both plasma systems have been analyzed and compared for thermal effects and temperature of the discharge in order to determine the possibilities to control the heating effect with driving waveform.
