Future smart factories are expected to deploy applications over high-performance indoor wireless channels in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands, which on the other hand are susceptible to high path losses and Line-of Sight (LoS) blockages. Low-cost Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) can provide great opportunities in such scenarios, due to its ability to alleviate LoS link blockages. In this paper, we formulate a combinatorial optimization problem, solved with Integer Linear Programming (ILP) to optimally maintain connectivity by solving the problem of allocating RIS to robots in a wireless indoor network. Our model exploits the characteristic of nulling interference from RISs by tuning RIS reflection coefficients. We further consider Quality-of-Service (QoS) at receivers in terms of Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) and connection outages due to insufficient transmission quality service. We derive a closed-form approximation of the stationary distribution of the Age of Information (AoI) of the semi-persistent scheduling (SPS) protocol which is a core part of NR-V2X, an important standard for vehicular communications. While prior works have studied the average AoI under similar assumptions, in this work we provide a full statistical characterization of the AoI by deriving an approximation of its probability mass function. As result, besides the average AoI, we are able to evaluate the age-violation probability, which is of particular relevance for safety-critical applications in vehicular domains, where the priority is to ensure that the AoI does not exceed a predefined threshold during system operation. The study reveals complementary behavior of the age-violation probability compared to the average AoI and highlights the role of the duration of the reservation as a key parameter in the SPS protocol. In this study, we revisit the performance analysis of distributed beamforming architectures in dense user-centric cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems in line-of-sight (LoS) scenarios. By incorporating a recently developed optimal distributed beamforming technique, called the team minimum mean square error (TMMSE) technique, we depart from previous studies that rely on suboptimal distributed beamforming approaches for LoS scenarios. Supported by extensive numerical simulations that follow 3GPP guidelines, we show that such suboptimal approaches may often lead to significant underestimation of the capabilities of distributed architectures, particularly in the presence of strong LoS paths. Considering the anticipated ultra-dense nature of cell-free mMIMO networks and the consequential high likelihood of strong LoS paths, our findings reveal that the team MMSE technique may significantly contribute in narrowing the performance gap between centralized and distributed architectures.

This letter presents simple analytical expressions for the spatial and temporal correlation functions in channels with von Mises-Fisher (vMF) scattering. In contrast to previous results, the expressions presented here are exact and based only on elementary functions, clearly revealing the impact of the underlying parameters. The derived results are validated by a comparison against numerical integration result, where an exact match is observed. This paper presents an analytical analysis of the Doppler spectrum in von Mises-Fisher (vMF) scattering channels. A simple closed-form expression for the Doppler spectrum is derived and used to investigate the impact of vMF scattering parameters, i.e., the mean direction and the degree of concentration of scatterers. The spectrum is observed to exhibit exponential behavior for mobile antenna motion parallel to the mean direction of scatterers, while conforming to a Gaussian-like shape for the perpendicular motion. We propose a method for predicting the location of user equipment (UE) using wireless fingerprints in dynamic indoor non-line-of-sight (NLoS) environments. In particular, our method copes with the challenges posed by the drift, birth, and death of scattering clusters resulting from dynamic changes in the wireless environment. Prominent examples of such dynamic wireless environments include factory floors or offices, where the geometry of the environment undergoes changes over time. These changes affect the distribution of wireless fingerprints, demonstrating some similarity between the distributions before and after the change. Consequently, the performance of a location estimator initially designed for a specific environment may degrade significantly when applied after changes have occurred in that environment. To address this limitation, we propose a domain adaptation framework that utilizes neural networks to align the distributions of wireless fingerprints collected both before and after environmental changes. By aligning these distributions, we design an estimator capable of predicting UE locations from their wireless fingerprints in the new environment. Experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in localizing UEs in dynamic wireless environments.

We reconsider the problem of joint power control and beamforming design to maximize the weighted sum rate in large and potentially cell-free massive MIMO networks. In contrast to the available short-term methods, where an iterative algorithm is run for every instantaneous channel realization, we derive an iterative algorithm that can be run only sporadically leveraging known channel statistics, with minor performance loss. In addition, our algorithm also applies to the design of non-trivial cooperative beamforming schemes subject to limited sharing of instantaneous channel state information. The D-band, spanning 110 GHz to 170 GHz, has emerged as a relevant frequency range for future mobile communications and radar sensing applications, particularly in the context of 6G technologies. This demonstration presents a high-bandwidth, real-time integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) platform operating in the upper D-band at 160 GHz. The platform comprises a software-defined intermediate frequency transceiver and a D-band radio frequency module. Its flexible software design allows for rapid integration of signal processing algorithms. The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is a potential solution to enhance network capacity and coverage without significant investment in additional infrastructure in 6G networks. This work highlights the interest of the mobile communication industry in RIS, and discusses the development of liquid crystal-based RIS for improved energy efficiency and coverage in the millimeter-wave band. Furthermore, the paper discusses perspectives and insights from an industry R&D point of view, addressing relevant use cases, technical requirements, implementation challenges, and practical considerations for RIS deployment optimization in the context of 6G networks. A hardware design of an RIS with liquid crystal at 28 GHz is presented. A propagation model for RIS as a new part of the system architecture is discussed, with approaches of semi-empirical models, geometric models, and their combination through the application of artificial intelligence/machine learning. Finally, a channel model for deployment optimization and dimensioning is presented, with the findings that a rather large RIS is favorable for coverage improvement, as well as greater attenuation at higher frequencies combined with a smaller RIS size., Comment: Published in IEEE Access

This report summarizes some considerations on possible evolutions of grant-free random access in the next generation of the 3GPP wireless cellular standard. The analysis is carried out by mapping the problem to the recently-introduced unsourced multiple access channel (UMAC) setup. By doing so, the performance of existing solutions can be benchmarked with information-theoretic bounds, assessing the potential gains that can be achieved over legacy 3GPP schemes. The study focuses on the two-step random access (2SRA) protocol introduced by Release 16 of the 5G New Radio standard, investigating its applicability to support large MTC / IoT terminal populations in a grant-free fashion. The analysis shows that the existing 2SRA scheme may not succeed in providing energy-efficient support to large user populations. It is generally believed that downlink cell-free networks perform best under centralized implementations where the local channel state information (CSI) acquired by the access-points (AP) is forwarded to one or more central processing units (CPU) for the computation of the joint precoders based on global CSI. However, mostly due to limited fronthaul capabilities, this procedure incurs some delay that may lead to partially outdated precoding decisions and hence performance degradation. In some scenarios, this may even lead to worse performance than distributed implementations where the precoders are locally computed by the APs based on partial yet timely local CSI. To address this issue, this study considers the problem of robust precoding design merging the benefits of timely local CSI and delayed global CSI. As main result, we provide a novel distributed precoding design based on the recently proposed team minimum mean-square error method. As a byproduct, we also obtain novel insights related to the AP-CPU functional split problem. Our main conclusion, corroborated by simulations, is that the opportunity of performing some local precoding computations at the APs should not be neglected, even in centralized implementations.

In this paper, we formalize an optimization framework for analog beamforming in the context of monostatic integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), where we also address the problem of self-interference in the analog domain. As a result, we derive semidefinite programs to approach detection-optimal transmit and receive beamformers, and we devise a superiorized iterative projection algorithm to approximate them. An important use case of next-generation wireless systems is device-edge co-inference, where a semantic task is partitioned between a device and an edge server. The device carries out data collection and partial processing of the data, while the remote server completes the given task based on information received from the device. It is often required that processing and communication be run as efficiently as possible at the device, while more computing resources are available at the edge. To address such scenarios, we introduce a new system solution, termed neuromorphic wireless device-edge co-inference. According to it, the device runs sensing, processing, and communication units using neuromorphic hardware, while the server employs conventional radio and computing technologies. The proposed system is designed using a transmitter-centric information-theoretic criterion that targets a reduction of the communication overhead, while retaining the most relevant information for the end-to-end semantic task of interest. Reliable wireless communications play an important role in the automotive industry as it helps to enhance current use cases and enable new ones such as connected autonomous driving, platooning, cooperative maneuvering, teleoperated driving, and smart navigation. These and other use cases often rely on specific quality of service (QoS) levels for communication. Recently, the area of predictive quality of service (QoS) has received a great deal of attention as a key enabler to forecast communication quality well enough in advance. However, predicting QoS in a reliable manner is a notoriously difficult task. In this paper, we evaluate ML tree-ensemble methods to predict QoS in the range of minutes with data collected from a cellular test network. We discuss radio environment characteristics and we showcase how these can be used to improve ML performance and further support the uptake of ML in commercial networks. Specifically, we use the correlations of the measurements coming from the radio environment by including information of prior vehicles to enhance the prediction of the target vehicles. Moreover, we are extending prior art by showing how longer prediction horizons can be supported.

The "near-field" propagation modeling of wireless channels is necessary to support sixth-generation (6G) technologies, such as intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), that are enabled by large aperture antennas and higher frequency carriers. As the conventional far-field model proves inadequate in this context, there is a pressing need to explore and bridge the gap between near and far-field propagation models. Although far-field models are simple and provide computationally efficient solutions for many practical applications, near-field models provide the most accurate representation of wireless channels. This paper builds upon the foundations of electromagnetic wave propagation theory to derive near and far-field models as approximations of the Green's function (Maxwell's equations). We characterize the near and far-field models both theoretically and with the help of simulations in a line-of-sight (LOS)-only scenario. In particular, for two key applications in multiantenna systems, namely, beamforming and multiple-access, we showcase the advantages of using the near-field model over the far-field, and present a novel scheduling scheme for multiple-access in the near-field regime. We consider problems where agents in a network seek a common quantity, measured independently and periodically by each agent through a local time-varying process. Numerous solvers addressing such problems have been developed in the past, featuring various adaptations of the local processing and the consensus step. However, existing solvers still lack support for advanced techniques, such as superiorization and over-the-air function computation (OTA-C). To address this limitation, we introduce a comprehensive framework for the analysis of distributed algorithms by characterizing them using the quasi-Fej\'er type algorithms and an extensive communication model. Under weak assumptions, we prove almost sure convergence of the algorithm to a common estimate for all agents. Moreover, we develop a specific class of algorithms within this framework to tackle distributed optimization problems with time-varying objectives, and, assuming that a time-invariant solution exists, prove its convergence to a solution. We also present a novel OTA-C protocol for consensus step in large decentralized networks, reducing communication overhead and enhancing network autonomy as compared to the existing protocols. In this study we derive novel optimal algorithms for joint power control and beamforming design in modern large-scale MIMO systems, such as those based on the cell-free massive MIMO and XL-MIMO concepts. In particular, motivated by the need for scalable system architectures, we formulate and solve nontrivial two-timescale extensions of the classical uplink power minimization and max-min fair resource allocation problems. In our formulations, we let the beamformers be functions mapping partial instantaneous channel state information (CSI) to beamforming weights, and jointly optimize these functions and the power control coefficients based on long-term statistical CSI. This long-term approach mitigates the severe scalability issues of competing short-term iterative algorithms in the literature, where a central controller endowed with global instantaneous CSI must solve a complex optimization problem for every channel realization, hence imposing very demanding requirements in terms of computational complexity and signaling overhead. Moreover, our approach outperforms the available long-term approaches, which do not jointly optimize powers and beamformers. Sensing plays a crucial role in autonomous and assisted vehicular driving, as well as in the operation of autonomous drones. The traditional segregation of communication and onboard sensing systems in mobility applications is due to be merged using Joint Communication and Sensing (JCAS) in the development of the 6G mobile radio standard. The integration of JCAS functions into the future road traffic landscape introduces novel challenges for the design of the 6G system architecture. Special emphasis will be placed on facilitating direct communication between road users and aerial drones. In various mobility scenarios, diverse levels of integration will be explored, ranging from leveraging communication capabilities to coordinate different radars to achieving deep integration through a unified waveform. Due to the lack of a feedback channel in the C-V2X sidelink, finding a suitable modulation and coding scheme (MCS) is a difficult task. However, recent use cases for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication with higher demands on data rate necessitate choosing the MCS adaptively. In this paper, we propose a machine learning approach to predict suitable MCS levels. Additionally, we propose the use of quantile prediction and evaluate it in combination with different algorithms for the task of predicting the MCS level with the highest achievable data rate. Thereby, we show significant improvements over conventional methods of choosing the MCS level. Using a machine learning approach, however, requires larger real-world data sets than are currently publicly available for research. Federated learning (FL) involves several devices that collaboratively train a shared model without transferring their local data. FL reduces the communication overhead, making it a promising learning method in UAV-enhanced wireless networks with scarce energy resources. Despite the potential, implementing FL in UAV-enhanced networks is challenging, as conventional UAV placement methods that maximize coverage increase the FL delay significantly. Moreover, the uncertainty and lack of a priori information about crucial variables, such as channel quality, exacerbate the problem. In this paper, we first analyze the statistical characteristics of a UAV-enhanced wireless sensor network (WSN) with energy harvesting. We then develop a model and solution based on the multi-objective multi-armed bandit theory to maximize the network coverage while minimizing the FL delay. Besides, we propose another solution that is particularly useful with large action sets and strict energy constraints at the UAVs. Our proposal uses a scalarized best-arm identification algorithm to find the optimal arms that maximize the ratio of the expected reward to the expected energy cost by sequentially eliminating one or more arms in each round. Then, we derive the upper bound on the error probability of our multi-objective and cost-aware algorithm. Numerical results show the effectiveness of our approach.

This study investigates simpler alternatives to coherent joint transmission for supporting robust connectivity against signal blockage in mmWave/sub-THz access networks. By taking an information-theoretic viewpoint, we demonstrate analytically that with a careful design, full macrodiversity gains and significant SNR gains can be achieved through canonical receivers and minimal coordination and synchronization requirements at the infrastructure side. Our proposed scheme extends non-coherent joint transmission by employing a special form of diversity to counteract artificially induced deep fades that would otherwise make this technique often compare unfavorably against standard transmitter selection schemes. Additionally, the inclusion of an Alamouti-like space-time coding layer is shown to recover a significant fraction of the optimal performance. Our conclusions are based on a statistical single-user multi-point intermittent block fading channel model that, although simplified, enables rigorous ergodic and outage rate analysis, while also considering timing offsets due to imperfect delay compensation. This paper presents a decentralized algorithm for solving distributed convex optimization problems in dynamic networks with time-varying objectives. The unique feature of the algorithm lies in its ability to accommodate a wide range of communication systems, including previously unsupported ones, by abstractly modeling the information exchange in the network. Specifically, it supports a novel communication protocol based on the "over-the-air" function computation (OTA-C) technology, that is designed for an efficient and truly decentralized implementation of the consensus step of the algorithm. Unlike existing OTA-C protocols, the proposed protocol does not require the knowledge of network graph structure or channel state information, making it particularly suitable for decentralized implementation over ultra-dense wireless networks with time-varying topologies and fading channels. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm synergizes with the "superiorization" methodology, allowing the development of new distributed algorithms with enhanced performance for the intended applications. The theoretical analysis establishes sufficient conditions for almost sure convergence of the algorithm to a common time-invariant solution for all agents, assuming such a solution exists. Our algorithm is applied to a real-world distributed random field estimation problem, showcasing its efficacy in terms of convergence speed, scalability, and spectral efficiency. In this paper, we present a coded computation (CC) scheme for distributed computation of the inference phase of machine learning (ML) tasks, specifically, the task of image classification. Building upon Agrawal et al.~2022, the proposed scheme combines the strengths of deep learning and Lagrange interpolation technique to mitigate the effect of straggling workers, and recovers approximate results with reasonable accuracy using outputs from any $R$ out of $N$ workers, where $R\leq N$. Our proposed scheme guarantees a minimum recovery threshold $R$ for non-polynomial problems, which can be adjusted as a tunable parameter in the system. Moreover, unlike existing schemes, our scheme maintains flexibility with respect to worker availability and system design. We propose two system designs for our CC scheme that allows flexibility in distributing the computational load between the master and the workers based on the accessibility of input data. Our experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our scheme compared to the state-of-the-art CC schemes for image classification tasks, and pave the path for designing new schemes for distributed computation of any general ML classification tasks.

Reflecting intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technology for enhancing wireless communication performance and enabling new applications in 6G networks with potentially low energy consumption and hardware complexity thanks to their passive nature. Despite the significant growth of the literature on RIS in recent years, covering various aspects of this technology, challenges and issues regarding the practical implementation of RIS have been less addressed. This issue is even more severe at D-band frequencies due to the inherent challenges. This paper aims to connect the requirements and aspirations from the link-level side to the actually achievable RIS hardware with the focus on the various models for RIS. In order to obtain a realistic hardware scenario while maintaining a manageable parameter set, a static reflect array with similar reflection behavior as the reconfigurable one is employed. The results of the study enable an improved RIS design process due to more realistic models. The special focus of this paper is on the hardware impairments, in particular, (i) the effect of specular reflection, and (ii) the beam squint effect.

We provide a mathematical framework to analyze the limits of Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) and derive analytical expressions for the most powerful test for estimating the decodability under maximum-likelihood decoding and $t$-error decoding. Furthermore, we numerically approximate the most powerful test for sum-product decoding. We compare the performance of previously studied HARQ prediction schemes and show that none of the state-of-the-art HARQ prediction is most powerful to estimate the decodability of a partially received signal vector under maximum-likelihood decoding and sum-product decoding. Due to their passive nature and thus low energy consumption, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have shown promise as means of extending coverage as a proxy for connection reliability. The relative locations of the base station (BS), IRS, and user equipment (UE) determine the extent of the coverage that the IRS provides which demonstrates the importance of the IRS placement problem. More specifically, locations, which determine whether BS-IRS and IRS-UE line of sight (LOS) links exist, and surface orientation, which determines whether the BS and UE are within the field of view (FoV) of the surface, play crucial roles in the quality of provided coverage. Moreover, another challenge is high computational complexity, since the IRS placement problem is a combinatorial optimization, and is NP-hard. Identifying the orientation of the surface and LOS channel as two crucial factors, we propose an efficient IRS placement algorithm that takes these two characteristics into account in order to maximize the network coverage. We prove the submodularity of the objective function which establishes near-optimal performance bounds for the algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm in a real environment.

This paper considers the massive MIMO unsourced random access problem in a quasi-static Rayleigh fading setting. The proposed coding scheme is based on a concatenation of a "conventional" channel code (such as, e.g., LDPC) serving as an outer code, and a sparse regression code (SPARC) serving as an inner code. The scheme combines channel estimation, single-user decoding, and successive interference cancellation in a novel way. The receiver performs joint channel estimation and SPARC decoding via an instance of a bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiGAMP) based algorithm, which leverages the intrinsic bilinear structure that arises in the considered communication regime. The detection step is followed by a per-user soft-input-soft-output (SISO) decoding of the outer channel code in combination with a successive interference cancellation (SIC) step. We show via numerical simulation that the resulting scheme achieves stat-of-the-art performance in the massive connectivity setting, while attaining comparatively low implementation complexity.

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a network configuration to provide utilities that are both fair and efficient in a well-defined sense. To cover as many applications as possible with a unified framework, we consider utilities defined in an axiomatic way, and the constraints imposed on the feasible network configurations are expressed with a single inequality involving a monotone norm. In this setting, we prove that a necessary and sufficient condition to obtain network configurations that are efficient in the weak Pareto sense is to select configurations attaining equality in the monotone norm constraint. Furthermore, for a given configuration satisfying this equality, we characterize a criterion for which the configuration can be considered fair for the active links. As cellular networks evolve towards the 6th generation, machine learning is seen as a key enabling technology to improve the capabilities of the network. Machine learning provides a methodology for predictive systems, which can make networks become proactive. This proactive behavior of the network can be leveraged to sustain, for example, a specific quality of service requirement. With predictive quality of service, a wide variety of new use cases, both safety- and entertainment-related, are emerging, especially in the automotive sector. Therefore, in this work, we consider maximum throughput prediction enhancing, for example, streaming or high-definition mapping applications. We discuss the entire machine learning workflow highlighting less regarded aspects such as the detailed sampling procedures, the in-depth analysis of the dataset characteristics, the effects of splits in the provided results, and the data availability. Reliable machine learning models need to face a lot of challenges during their lifecycle. We highlight how confidence can be built on machine learning technologies by better understanding the underlying characteristics of the collected data. We discuss feature engineering and the effects of different splits for the training processes, showcasing that random splits might overestimate performance by more than twofold. We derive a novel uplink-downlink duality principle for optimal joint precoding design under per-transmitter power and information constraints in fading channels. The information constraints model limited sharing of channel state information and data bearing signals across the transmitters. The main application is to cell-free networks, where each access point (AP) must typically satisfy an individual power constraint and form its transmit signal using limited cooperation capabilities. Our duality principle applies to ergodic achievable rates given by the popular hardening bound, and it can be interpreted as a nontrivial generalization of a previous result by Yu and Lan for deterministic channels. This generalization allows us to study involved information constraints going beyond the simple case of cluster-wise centralized precoding covered by previous techniques. Specifically, we show that the optimal joint precoders are, in general, given by an extension of the recently developed team minimum mean-square error method. As a particular yet practical example, we then solve the problem of optimal local precoding design in user-centric cell-free massive MIMO networks subject to per-AP power constraints.

This paper presents two wireless measurement campaigns in industrial testbeds: industrial Vehicle-to-vehicle (iV2V) and industrial Vehicle-to-infrastructure plus Sensor (iV2I+), together with detailed information about the two captured datasets. iV2V covers sidelink communication scenarios between Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), while iV2I+ is conducted at an industrial setting where an autonomous cleaning robot is connected to a private cellular network. The combination of different communication technologies within a common measurement methodology provides insights that can be exploited by Machine Learning (ML) for tasks such as fingerprinting, line-of-sight detection, prediction of quality of service or link selection. The evolution of wireless communications into 6G and beyond is expected to rely on new machine learning (ML)-based capabilities. These can enable proactive decisions and actions from wireless-network components to sustain quality-of-service (QoS) and user experience. Moreover, new use cases in the area of vehicular and industrial communications will emerge. Specifically in the area of vehicle communication, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) schemes will benefit strongly from such advances. With this in mind, we have conducted a detailed measurement campaign that paves the way to a plethora of diverse ML-based studies. The resulting datasets offer GPS-located wireless measurements across diverse urban environments for both cellular (with two different operators) and sidelink radio access technologies, thus enabling a variety of different studies towards V2X. The datasets are labeled and sampled with a high time resolution. Furthermore, we make the data publicly available with all the necessary information to support the onboarding of new researchers. MIMO technology has enabled spatial multiple access and has provided a higher system spectral efficiency (SE). However, this technology has some drawbacks, such as the high number of RF chains that increases complexity in the system. One of the solutions to this problem can be to employ reconfigurable antennas (RAs) that can support different radiation patterns during transmission to provide similar performance with fewer RF chains. In this regard, the system aims to maximize the SE with respect to optimum beamforming design and RA mode selection. Due to the non-convexity of this problem, we propose machine learning-based methods for RA antenna mode selection in both dynamic and static scenarios. In the static scenario, we present how to solve the RA mode selection problem, an integer optimization problem in nature, via deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN). A Multi-Armed-bandit (MAB) consisting of offline and online training is employed for the dynamic RA state selection. For the proposed MAB, the computational complexity of the optimization problem is reduced. Finally, the proposed methods in both dynamic and static scenarios are compared with exhaustive search and random selection methods.

Reconfigurable antennas (RAs) are a promising technology to enhance the capacity and coverage of wireless communication systems. However, RA systems have two major challenges: (i) High computational complexity of mode selection, and (ii) High overhead of channel estimation for all modes. In this paper, we develop a low-complexity iterative mode selection algorithm for data transmission in an RA-MIMO system. Furthermore, we study channel estimation of an RA multi-user MIMO system. However, given the coherence time, it is challenging to estimate channels of all modes. We propose a mode selection scheme to select a subset of modes, train channels for the selected subset, and predict channels for the remaining modes. In addition, we propose a prediction scheme based on pattern correlation between modes. Representative simulation results demonstrate the system's channel estimation error and achievable sum-rate for various selected modes and different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).

By trading coverage and hardware complexity for abundance of spectrum, sub-THz mobile access networks are expected to operate under highly directive and relatively spectrally inefficient transmission regimes, while still offering enormous capacity gains over current sub-6GHz alternatives. Building on this assumption, and supported by extensive indoor directional channel measurements at 160 GHz, this study advocates the use of very simple modulation and equalization techniques for sub-THz mobile access. Specifically, we demonstrate that, under the aforementioned transmission regimes, little or no equalization is needed for scoring significant capacity gain targets. In particular, we show that single-carrier or low-number-of-subcarriers modulations are very attractive competitors to the dramatically more complex and energy inefficient traditional multi-carrier designs.

In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation scheme for pulse-shaped multicarrier systems using smoothness regularization for ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). It can be applied to any multicarrier system with or without linear precoding to estimate challenging doubly-dispersive channels. A recently proposed modulation scheme using orthogonal precoding is orthogonal time-frequency and space modulation (OTFS). In OTFS, pilot and data symbols are placed in delay-Doppler (DD) domain and are jointly precoded to the time-frequency (TF) domain. On the one hand, such orthogonal precoding increases the achievable channel estimation accuracy and enables high TF diversity at the receiver. On the other hand, it introduces leakage effects which requires extensive leakage suppression when the piloting is jointly precoded with the data. To avoid this, we propose to precode the data symbols only, place pilot symbols without precoding into the TF domain, and estimate the channel coefficients by interpolating smooth functions from the pilot samples. Furthermore, we present a piloting scheme enabling a smooth control of the number and position of the pilot symbols. We derive a fast and optimal algorithm for solving practical weighted max-min SINR problems in cell-free massive MIMO networks. For the first time, the optimization problem jointly covers long-term power control and distributed beamforming design under imperfect cooperation. In particular, we consider user-centric clusters of access points cooperating on the basis of possibly limited channel state information sharing. Our optimal algorithm merges powerful power control tools based on interference calculus with the recently developed team theoretic framework for distributed beamforming design. In addition, we propose a variation that shows faster convergence in practice.

This paper considers a general framework for massive random access based on sparse superposition coding. We provide guidelines for the code design and propose the use of constant-weight codes in combination with a dictionary design based on Gabor frames. The decoder applies an extension of approximate message passing (AMP) by iteratively exchanging soft information between an AMP module that accounts for the dictionary structure, and a second inference module that utilizes the structure of the involved constant-weight code. We apply the encoding structure to (i) the unsourced random access setting, where all users employ a common dictionary, and (ii) to the "sourced" random access setting with user-specific dictionaries. When applied to a fading scenario, the communication scheme essentially operates non-coherently, as channel state information is required neither at the transmitter nor at the receiver. We observe that in regimes of practical interest, the proposed scheme compares favorably with state-of-the art schemes, in terms of the (per-user) energy-per-bit requirement, as well as the number of active users that can be simultaneously accommodated in the system. Importantly, this is achieved with a considerably smaller size of the transmitted codewords, potentially yielding lower latency and bandwidth occupancy, as well as lower implementation complexity.

This paper presents a kernel-based adaptive filter that is applied for the digital domain self-interference cancellation (SIC) in a transceiver operating in full-duplex (FD) mode. In FD, the benefit of simultaneous transmission and receiving of signals comes at the price of strong self-interference (SI). In this work, we are primarily interested in suppressing the SI using an adaptive filter namely adaptive projected subgradient method (APSM) in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) of functions. Using the projection concept as a powerful tool, APSM is used to model and consequently remove the SI. A low-complexity and fast-tracking algorithm is provided taking advantage of parallel projections as well as the kernel trick in RKHS. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on real measurement data. The method illustrates the good performance of the proposed adaptive filter, compared to the known popular benchmarks. They demonstrate that the kernel-based algorithm achieves a favorable level of digital SIC while enabling parallel computation-based implementation within a rich and nonlinear function space, thanks to the employed adaptive filtering method.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is an interesting technology that enables massive connectivity as required in future 5G and 6G networks. While purely linear processing already achieves good performance in NOMA systems, in certain scenarios, non-linear processing is mandatory to ensure acceptable performance. In this paper, we propose a neural network architecture that combines the advantages of both linear and non-linear processing. Its real-time detection performance is demonstrated by a highly efficient implementation on a graphics processing unit (GPU). Lagrange coded computation (LCC) is essential to solving problems about matrix polynomials in a coded distributed fashion; nevertheless, it can only solve the problems that are representable as matrix polynomials. In this paper, we propose AICC, an AI-aided learning approach that is inspired by LCC but also uses deep neural networks (DNNs). It is appropriate for coded computation of more general functions. We propose a new proof method for direct coding theorems for wiretap channels where the eavesdropper has access to a quantum version of the transmitted signal on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and the legitimate parties communicate through a classical channel or a classical input, quantum output (cq) channel. The transmitter input can be subject to an additive cost constraint, which specializes to the case of an average energy constraint. This method yields errors that decay exponentially with increasing block lengths. Moreover, it provides a guarantee of a quantum version of semantic security, which is an established concept in classical cryptography and physical layer security. Therefore, it complements existing works which either do not prove the exponential error decay or use weaker notions of security. The main part of this proof method is a direct coding result on channel resolvability which states that there is only a doubly exponentially small probability that a standard random codebook does not solve the channel resolvability problem for the cq channel. Semantic security has strong operational implications meaning essentially that the eavesdropper cannot use its quantum observation to gather any meaningful information about the transmitted signal. We also discuss the connections between semantic security and various other established notions of secrecy.

Many common instances of power control problems for cellular and cell-free massive MIMO networks can be interpreted as max-min utility optimization problems involving affine interference mappings and polyhedral constraints. We show that these problems admit a closed-form solution which depends on the spectral radius of known matrices. In contrast, previous solutions in the literature have been indirectly obtained using iterative algorithms based on the bisection method, or on fixed-point iterations. Furthermore, we also show an asymptotically tight bound for the optimal utility, which in turn provides a simple rule of thumb for evaluating whether the network is operating in the noise or interference limited regime. We finally illustrate our results by focusing on classical max-min fair power control for cell-free massive MIMO networks.

The Open RAN architecture is a promising and future-oriented architecture. It is intended to open up the radio access network (RAN) and enable more innovation and competition in the market. This will lead to RANs for current 5G networks, but especially for future 6G networks, evolving from the current highly integrated, vendor-specific RAN architecture towards disaggregated architectures with open interfaces that will enable to better tailor RAN solutions to the requirements of 5G and 6G applications. However, the introduction of such an open architecture substantially broadens the attack possibilities when compared to conventional RANs. In the past, this has often led to negative headlines that in summary have associated Open RAN with faulty or inadequate security. Commercial radar sensing is gaining relevance and machine learning algorithms constitute one of the key components that are enabling the spread of this radio technology into areas like surveillance or healthcare. However, radar datasets are still scarce and generalization cannot be yet achieved for all radar systems, environment conditions or design parameters. A certain degree of fine tuning is, therefore, usually required to deploy machine-learning-enabled radar applications. In this work, we consider the problem of unsupervised domain adaptation across radar configurations in the context of deep-learning human activity classification using frequency-modulated continuous-wave. For that, we focus on the theory-inspired technique of Margin Disparity Discrepancy, which has already been proved successful in the area of computer vision. In this paper, we show that the adaptive projected subgradient method (APSM) is bounded perturbation resilient. To illustrate a potential application of this result, we propose a set-theoretic framework for MIMO detection, and we devise algorithms based on a superiorized APSM. Various low-complexity MIMO detection algorithms achieve excellent performance on i.i.d. Gaussian channels, but they typically incur high performance loss if realistic channel models (e.g., correlated channels) are considered. Compared to existing low-complexity iterative detectors such as individually optimal large-MIMO approximate message passing (IO-LAMA), the proposed algorithms can achieve considerably lower symbol error ratios over correlated channels. In this work, we propose novel HARQ prediction schemes for Cloud RANs (C-RANs) that use feedback over a rate-limited feedback channel (2 - 6 bits) from the Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) to predict at the User Equipment (UE) the decoding outcome at the BaseBand Unit (BBU) ahead of actual decoding. In particular, we propose a Dual Autoencoding 2-Stage Gaussian Mixture Model (DA2SGMM) that is trained in an end-to-end fashion over the whole C-RAN setup. Using realistic link-level simulations in the sub-THz band at 100 GHz, we show that the novel DA2SGMM HARQ prediction scheme clearly outperforms all other adapted and state-of-the-art schemes. The DA2SGMM shows a superior performance in terms of blockage detection as well as HARQ prediction in the no-blockage and single-blockage cases. In particular, the DA2SGMM with 4~bit feedback achieves a more than 200 % higher throughput in average compared to its best alternative. Compared to regular HARQ, the DA2SGMM reduces the maximum transmission latency by more than 72.4 %, while maintaining more than 75 % of the throughput in the no-blockage scenario. In the single-blockage scenario, DA2SGMM significantly increases the throughput for most of the evaluated Signal-to-Noise-Ratios (SNRs) compared to regular HARQ.

In this feasibility study, we have implemented a recently proposed partially linear multiuser detection algorithm in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs) on a GPU-accelerated platform. Partially linear multiuser detection, which combines the robustness of linear detection with the power of nonlinear methods, has been proposed for a massive connectivity scenario with the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). This is a promising approach, but detecting payloads within a received orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) radio frame requires the execution of a large number of inner product operations, which are the main computational burden of the algorithm. Although inner-product operations consist of simple kernel evaluations, their vast number poses a challenge in ultra-low latency (ULL) applications, because the time needed for computing the inner products might exceed the sub-millisecond latency requirement. To address this problem, this study demonstrates the acceleration of the inner-product operations through massive parallelization. The result is a GPU-accelerated real-time OFDM receiver that enables sub-millisecond latency detection to meet the requirements of 5th generation (5G) and beyond ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC) systems. Moreover, the parallelization and acceleration techniques explored and demonstrated in this study can be extended to many other signal processing algorithms in Hilbert spaces, such as those based on projection onto convex sets (POCS) and adaptive projected subgradient method (APSM) algorithms. We propose a deep learning-based method that uses spatial and temporal information extracted from the sub-6GHz band to predict/track beams in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band. In more detail, we consider a dual-band communication system operating in both the sub-6GHz and mmWave bands. The objective is to maximize the achievable mutual information in the mmWave band with a hybrid analog/digital architecture where analog precoders (RF precoders) are taken from a finite codebook. Finding a RF precoder using conventional search methods incurs large signalling overhead, and the signalling scales with the number of RF chains and the resolution of the phase shifters. To overcome the issue of large signalling overhead in the mmWave band, the proposed method exploits the spatiotemporal correlation between sub-6GHz and mmWave bands, and it predicts/tracks the RF precoders in the mmWave band from sub-6GHz channel measurements. The proposed method provides a smaller candidate set so that performing a search over that set significantly reduces the signalling overhead compared with conventional search heuristics. Simulations show that the proposed method can provide reasonable achievable rates while significantly reducing the signalling overhead.

We propose a method that combines fixed point algorithms with a neural network to optimize jointly discrete and continuous variables in millimeter-wave communication systems, so that the users' rates are allocated fairly in a well-defined sense. In more detail, the discrete variables include user-access point assignments and the beam configurations, while the continuous variables refer to the power allocation. The beam configuration is predicted from user-related information using a neural network. Given the predicted beam configuration, a fixed point algorithm allocates power and assigns users to access points so that the users achieve the maximum fraction of their interference-free rates. The proposed method predicts the beam configuration in a "one-shot" manner, which significantly reduces the complexity of the beam search procedure. Moreover, even if the predicted beam configurations are not optimal, the fixed point algorithm still provides the optimal power allocation and user-access point assignments for the given beam configuration.
